We have gathered here a collection of photos. They are photos that record history. History of the start of the work called Leyte Christian College, its first teachers—-Johnny Eastep, Jack Belo, Lawrence Belo, Charlie Sabado, Rolando Quevedo, Jonathan Lapitan— and of its first students. Photo of the road built to make easy access to the farm land—virgin territory—giving rise to a Christian college that has been everyone’s dream. Photos of the ground-breaking that starts the new LCC building. Photos of the first cottages. Of the chapel hour that is an occasion of rejoicing as everyone worships God and listens to His Word being preached. Photos that show how students have sweated it out at the final exam. And of the great leap of a young man named Jerusalem.

One day, everyone who has had a part in the work of Leyte Christian College will have something to reminisce, to remember each other by. Photos that one could show to friends, to their spouses, or children, or grandchildren. It is a way to look back—-with joy.

After all, a picture, as the Chinese would say, is worth a thousand words.

This year West End and Westview have teamed up to bring you a grand day of celebrations and activities to kick off the holiday season. All events are open to the general public. If you haven’t ever ventured out to the Westside of Atlanta this is your chance to GO WEST!

The day will benefit The Atlanta BeltLine, which is a $2.8 billion redevelopment project that will shape the way Atlanta grows over the next 25 years and beyond. The project proposes a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit along a historic railroad corridor circling downtown and connecting many neighborhoods directly to each other by streetcar or light rail.

ACTIVITY LINE-UP:

9:30am – 5K Walk-A-Thon Benefit for KIPP STRIVE Academy: Rain or shine. Get your legs on; get your exercise before the parties later. 5K = three miles and takes about one hour. Meet at KIPP STRIVE, 1444 Lucile Avenue – the former JC Harris Elementary School in Westview. To register for the walk or to help with planning please contact Scott Shepherd at (404) 277-5970.

12:00pm – BeltLine Trail Ground Breaking Ceremony: Meet at Muse Street and Lucile Avenue at high noon to celebrate the ground breaking for the next leg of the BeltLine Trail. Once complete, the trail will connect Rose Circle Park with the Westview Cemetery and add more green space to the community. Free giveaways from the BeltLine. Walk-A-Thon ends at the ground breaking site. For more information or to help with planning please contact Patrick Berry at (404) 755-1255.

12:15pm – Westview Holiday Party at Fire Station Number 17: Immediately after the Beltline Ground Breaking Ceremony join the Westview Community Organization and the firefighters for a traditional holiday lunch at Fire Station 17, 1489 R.D. Abernathy Boulevard. Please bring a dish to share. For more information or to help with planning please contact Ayana Gabriel at (404) 345-3209.

7:00-11:00pm – Cocktail Party and Hord’Oeuvres at the Hammonds House: Join West End, Westview & West End Merchants Coalition for a Gala to celebrate our historic shared past, our delightful present and our fantastic future. To our resident guests, please reach out to friends in other neighborhoods that are looking to live in or buy in our neighborhood. The holiday party will be a great introduction to the area by meeting our greatest asset: our friends and neighbors. The party is pot luck Hor d’Oeuvres with live music. In lieu of a dish, a small donation is suggested. This is a benefit for the community. For more information or to help with planning please contact Carl Nes at (404) 755-2000.

For more information about the BeltLine, please visit www.beltline.org. More information about the day of activities is available at: www.atlantawestend.com – www.westviewatlanta.com – www.wemc.biz.

The state broke ground today on a new Hold Cargo and Light Industrial Building at Hilo International

The state broke ground today on a new Hold Cargo and Light Industrial Building at Hilo International Airport. The 60,000 square-foot, steel-framed building will be used to accommodate delivery and transport of goods into Hilo.

A ground breaking ceremony was held today for a new cargo faciity in Hilo. Photo Courtesy: Hawaii State Department of Transportation.

State officials with the Department of Transportation say the project also includes the construction of a 50,000 square-yard apron as well as taxiways designed to support wide-body cargo aircraft.

The total cost for this two-phase project is approximately $30 million. Phase I will include construction of the air carrier apron at a cost of $15 million, $10 million of which is federally-funded. The second phase involves the construction of the cargo building and a parking lot at a cost of $15 million in state airport funds.

When completed, the new cargo building will be closer to the main terminal and will allow for the consolidation of all cargo operations under one roof. DOT officials say the move will increase the efficiency of airline operations.

The existing cargo facility will then be utilized as a future heliport. Construction of both project phases by contractor Isemoto Contracting Co. Ltd. is anticipated for completion in November 2011.

You can view more pictures from yesterday’s meeting on our Picture page. Thanks to all of the parents who helped out with the meeting yesterday, as well as Jess and Mariam from the EB High School Key Club.

One thing we learned from yesterday’s meeting is that 90 minutes was a bit too long, especially for some of the younger members. Beginning with our next meeting on November 4th, the garden club meetings will end at 4:30pm. An hour will give us plenty of time to have a snack and complete our scheduled activities. If you have any questions about the time change, please email or call Kate.

Thank you to everyone for a great kickoff meeting! We’ll see you on November 4th.

This morning saw the introduction of yet another ground-breaking television feature to appear on

This morning saw the introduction of yet another ground-breaking television feature to appear on “Jack TV”. Minutes earlier, ‘The Space’ was born and will be filmed and broadcasted every week on Channel Jack.

“What is this Space?!”, I hear you cry (as I have extremely good hearing). Well, I’ll tell you a bit but I don’t want to ruin it…

‘The Space’ is, funnily enough, a space which will appear every Friday at 11am somewhere in East London and if you are lucky enough to be in ‘The Space’ at that time, you will be appearing on “Jack TV” the next week!

What you do in ‘The Space’ is entirely up to you… but be warned, it is in a public space!

Since it’s conception, ‘The Space’ has had dancing, jigging, stretching, hugging and Lu kissing the actual pavement in it’s comforting vicinity.

These antics will form part of the first airing of ‘The Space’ next week when “Jack TV” launches but what happens after that is all up to you lovely people…

See you next Friday!

This event was open to the public and I am kind of kicking myself for not making more of an effort to try to attend. This is the first ‘real’ step when it comes to the construction of the Marlins’ new home. Just 32 months from now construction will be done and we will be able to enjoy baseball during the 2012 season in this state-of-the-art baseball stadium.

Here are a few pics from today’s groundbreaking ceremony:

I heard on the local sports radio station, 790 The Ticket, that Charlie Hough and Benito Santiago were on hand to throw out and catch the first ‘official’ pitch today. I am dying to find a picture of that and when I do I will share it with all of you.

This morning the trustees signed the loan documents with Security National Bank to finance the new fire station, then held the official groundbreaking ceremony at the building site.

After several years leading up to this day we are officially building a new fire station/adminstrative building for the township!

David Phares, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, welcomed everyone out on this beautiful morning, and was followed by a few brief words from Trustees David Finfrock and Nancy Brown. The time was then turned over to State Senator and project architect Chris Widener, who commented on the vitality of western Clark County and the Bethel Township area, as evidenced by the construction of this new station. He also thanked Jim Leathly and Security National Bank for their support in moving this project forward. County Commissioner Roger Tackett then spoke, representing that Board in his capacity as Chairman.

Senator Chris Widener, Trustee David Finfrock, Fire Chief Jacob King, Trustee Chairman David Phares, County Commissioner Roger Tackett, Trustee Nancy Brown, and Fiscal Officer Melanie Cochran

Chief King gave the keynote address of the day, with brief but inspiring words.

Chief King emphasized the importance of the new fire station for providing service to the township and quoted Helen Keller in his keynote address.

It was then time for the official groundbreaking itself. Wearing hard hats and wielding golden shovels, township officials and others turned the first dirt for the project.

Township Administrator Tim King, Fire Chief Jacob King, Trustee Nancy Brown, Fiscal Officer Melanie Cochran, Jim Leathly of Security National Bank, County Commissioner Roger Tackett, Trustees David Finfrock and David Phares, Senator (and architect) Chris Widener, and Jason Funderburg of WDC architectural firm

Many members of the fire department were in attendance, and they also had an opportunity to help officially break ground for the building. They are excited at the prospect of working out of a new station that will fulfill all the needs of a modern fire department.

Estimates for the completion date are the January or February time frame, but we are holding out hope for a BIG Christmas present this year.

Keep an eye on the progress as you drive by on Gerlaugh and Lake Roads. We will also keep you updated on progress on this blog, on the township website, and in our fall newsletter.

If you’re anything like me, your first reaction to that headline goes something like this: “Say WHAA

If you’re anything like me, your first reaction to that headline goes something like this:

“Say WHAAAAAAA?????”

That’s what I did when my wife told me about it. She apparently got the info from Perez Hilton at 9:15 this morning…the day Perez gets the drop on me when it comes to geek culture (gay or no) is a sad day indeed. Some people are trying to say its a publicity stunt, but writer Peter David says its the real deal.

“It’s not a fake out. A number of people seem to be concerned that Star is still under Cortex’s control. Or that Rictor is going to freak out the next panel and say, ‘Dude, what the hell?’ That would be cheap. I don’t do cheap. Okay, sometimes I do, but not this time. I’m not interested in having people say, ‘Peter David introduced this and then chickened out.’"

Apparently there have been hints to their relationship before now, and the latest issue of X-Factor confirms suspicions. Not to shit in anyone’s cereal here, but I don’t think this is going stick. It’s not going be David’s fault. Kudos to him for having the stones to pull this shit off. But anyone who reads my blog knows that I don’t read Marvel because they have continuity issues. Some writer will come along after David’s moved on to other projects, and either explain the whole incident away or ignore it completely and give one or both of these characters female romantic interests.

Still, this fact does not cheapen the fact that mainstream comics has addressed the gay issue. Way to deal with the elephant in the room, guys.

The groundbreaking moment takes place in X-Factor, 45 which went on sale today. I’ve uploaded an image of the last page for your convenience.

On an unrelated note: Does it annoy the fuck out of anyone but me that Rictor’s name is misspelled??? His mutant ability is to generate seismic energy waves (basically the guy can create earthquakes.) One would assume his name is taken from Charles RICHTER, the man who invented the RICHTER magnitude scale that we use to measure earthquakes, but Marvel insists that his name is RICTOR. Sorry about that. The English major in me reared his ugly head.

DS Out.

Last week the U of L officially broke ground on the lastest addition to the campus – construct

Last week the U of L officially broke ground on the lastest addition to the campus – construction has begun on the new Daycare Facility here. This is a pretty big deal considering that this push for on campus daycare has taken nearly five full years to come to fruition.

Ground was broken by student leaders, senior level administrators, members of the Daycare Action Committee (DAC), and the outside service provider for the daycare facility. For many of the students present this opening was a large victory as the movement to bring daycare onto campus began as a grass roots movement. DAC was formed with the support of faculty and staff here at the U of L, but largely was made up of students. Their study on the need for daycare on campus was the prime spring board that got this issue moving along in the upper levels of administration. You can find many of their studies here.

All of those who worked so hard to bring this service to campus, congratulations – here’s to 2010, when the facility will officially open its doors for service.

Cheers,
