Sabe aqueles momentos em que precisamos de uma informação que está em nosso computador, e não temos pendrive para transportar ?

Ou aqueles em que sempre pegamos vírus quando usamos nosso pendrive em máquinas de desconhecidos?

Mediante a esses possíveis desagradáveis momentos, eu indico o gmail como forma de solução.
É necessário o uso do firefox e possuir uma conta GMAIL.

Vamos lá,  abra o Firefox (navegador), baixe o add-on Gspace após a instalação reinicie o firefox, clique em ferramentas -> Gspace…

Abrindo a tela do programa, clique em manage accounts, adcione sua conta ou crie uma nova (gmail), clique em login e pronto:  Pode usar seu HD virtual de 6GB.

A interface e semelhante a do windows,  sendo assim você  não encontrará dificuldade e a melhor parte,  o serviço e totalmente grátis.

No meu Gspace já aparecem as pastas e arquivos existentes no meu micro. Eu Gostei, é  muito útil pra mim!!

Nu cred ca este cineva care sa nu-si smulga parul din cap pentru ca nu a facut backup, pana chiar si la o mica chestie. Ca multi altii si eu am pierdut multe, dintr-o simpla formatare facuta in graba sau intr-un exces de entuziasm cauzat de vreun nou sistem de operare furnizat de microshit. Dupa ce in urma cu cateva luni am pierdut cam 2 ani de munca (recuperati din fericire in cele din urma… dar nu in totalitate, ci cam 70%) si cateva mii de poze, m-am gandit serios la alternative de backup.

Am facut niste cautari serioase si am gasit cateva chestii interesante chiar la Google. In primul rand:

Google Notebook – aparent e o banalitate… dar unde alt undeva poti stoca fisiere text, retete, bancuri, liste cu filme vazute, mini todo-uri ale proiectelor samd, daca nu chiar aici si chiar cu contul tau de gmail?

Google Calendar – pentru cei care folosesc TODO’s dar si pentru cei care nu au folosit in viata lor, dar si-au impus o organizare mai buna in viata lor dezorganizata. Cel mai important aspect este ca primesti SMS-uri de la Google cu ce trebuie sa faci la ora cutare! Acum poti primi SMS inainte cu 1h sa pleci la munca/facultate/liceu/etc. Si cum romanul e al dracului de inventiv, de ce sa nu faci share la calendarul tau cu anumiti prieteni, si sa trimiti SMS-uri gratis, sub forma de task-uri?:D

GSpace – oficial, cei care au facut acest add-on pentru Mozilla Firefox nu au nicio treaba cu cei de la Google. Ca sa fiu succint: prin intermediul acestui add-on te poti folosi de cei +7GB pe care ti-i ofera Gmail pentru a-ti stoca muzica, pozele, etc. Un alt avantaj este ca poti downloada fisierele uploadate prin intermediul Gspace, chiar din contul de Gmail pentru ca aceste fisiere sunt trimise ca email-uri. Singura problema pe care am intampinat-o a fost viteza de upload, cu care sper sa nu aveti prea mari probleme… dar chiar si asa, cine iti mai da GRATIS pe net acum +7GB ?!

P.S. in mod clar am renuntat la Gspace dat fiind uploadul si mi-am cumparat aceasta jucarie in varianta de 250GB 160RON si face toti banii (si ca sa fiu sigur ca microshit nu’si bate joc de mine si imi sterge ceva chiar si de pe hardul asta pe care il folosesc ca backup, ii scot alimentarea cat timp nu am nevoie de el)

GMail memang tepat kalau disebut sebagai layanan free webmail terbaik saat ini, selain mudah digunakan, ruang yang lega membuat kita bisa menyimpan berbagai data attachment ataupun file-file kiriman dair hard disk ke inbox tanpa takut akan penuh. Nah, yang terakhir ini cukup menarik untuk dicermati. Kalau anda pernah menggunakan aplikasi Gmail Drive dari viksoe, pasti sudah merasakan betapa mudahnya mengunggah file ke inbox Gmail kita.

Nah, kali ini akan saya review salah satu add in Firefox yang memiliki fungsi yang kurang lebih sama dengan Gmail Drive. Adalah Gspace yang mampu memberikan kita keleluasaan mengunggah file dalam jumlah yang banyak ke inbox gmail hanya dengan beberapa klik. Untuk lebih jelasnya, baca terus artikel ini.

Gspace adalah salah satu add in Firefox yang memberi fungsi yang cukup menarik yaitu upload file-file dari komputer kita ke Gmail dengan mengggunakan Firefox. Tampilan GSpace sendiri kurang lebih seperti ini (maaf kalau gambarnya kecil, banyak yang protes katanya gambar gedhe bikin lemot loading halaman):

Nah, dengan menggunakan Gspace anda dapat dengan mudah menambahkan file ke Gmail. Caranya adalah sebagai berikut:

1. Install dulu add in untuk Firefox dengan buka browser dan arahkan ke sini.

2. Setelah instalasi anda akan diminta merestart Firefox, klik Restart Firefox.

3. Setelah Firefox terbuka lagi, klik Tools- Gspace untuk memulai menggunakan GSpace, anda akan mendapatkan tampilan seperti diatas.

4. Klik manage account. Masukkan alamat e-mail dan password anda di kotak isian yang tersedia dan klik Add.

5. Kembali ke jendela utama, klik account anda lalu klik login.

6. Klik Browse untuk memindah folder lokal anda ke lokasi pilihan.

7. Klik file yang akan anda unggah, disarankan untuk tidak mengunggah file yang ukurannya lebih dari 20 Mb.

8. Pilih file yang akan anda unggah, klik kanan lalu pilih upload.

9. Proses akan berjalan seperti ini

10. Cek di inbox Gmail anda dan akan tampak file-file yang anda unggah masuk satu per satu ke inbox anda.

Some smart guys  decided to use gmail as an external drive, this website porposes an shell extension that adds a GMail drive to your Windows (My Computer) next to your local drives. You can send files directly from you PC by drag and drop. All the files you send appear as mails prefixed with GMAILFS in subjects. You can create a filter to move all messages containing this prefix in archives to avoid inbox overload.

Another guy made an extension for Firefox.

Anda tentu sering mendengar tentang website online storage gratisan yang mengizinkan kita menyimpan file pribadi di server internet, bukan? Kita bisa mengupload file video, audio, dokumen, software atau yang lain di server mereka. Tentunya kita harus mendaftar dulu untuk memakai layanan mereka. Penyedia biasanya menarik tarif beberapa dollar untuk layanan mereka tergantung sebesar apa kapasitas yang ditawarkan, meski begitu juga ada yang gratis. Jasa file hosting ini biasanya juga memberikan fasilitas share file yang telah diupload dengan memberi link. Penyedia jasa online harddisk (filehosting) yang terkenal adalah rapidshare.com, boxstr.com, box.net , dan banyak sekali layanan lain. Kali ini kita akan mencoba memanfaatkan Gmail sebagai layanan filehosting gratis. Kita bisa mengupload file kita ke Gmail seperti mengupload pada filehosting service. Meskipun kita tidak bisa men-share file itu kepada orang lain. Saat artikel ini dibuat Gmail memiliki space sekitar 7 GB, sangat besar untuk ukuran filehosting gratisan.

Kenapa harus memakai Gspace? Apa saja kelebihan dan kekurangannya? Adakah aplikasi lain yang mirip Gspace? Berikut penulis sertakan kelebihan dan kekurangan Gspace yang bisa dijadikan bahan pertimbangan.

Kelebihan Gspace:

1. Mudah digunakan

2. Membuat account Gmail menjadi harddisk online.

3. Bisa dilakukan secara real-time

4. Ringan, tidak banyak membebani sistem

5. Memiliki fitur preview bagi gambar yang telah diupload

6. Tersedia dokumentasi berupa FAQ dan tutorial

7. Tidak hanya File Transfer, namun fitur Player, GmailDrive, dan Photo Mode juga dimilikinya. Artinya Gspace lebih lengkap daripada GmailDrive

8. Dapat membantu mengajarkan proses upload bagi pemula

Kekurangan Gspace:

1. Tidak bisa login bersamaan jika anda juga sedang akses Gmail

2. Tampilannya harus diakui membosankan

3. Tidak memiliki kemampuan membagi (share) file kepada orang lain

4. Tidak ada jaminan keamanan seperti enkripsi yang disediakan

Upload Sebuah File

Apa yang harus kita lakukan? Cara memanfaatkannya adalah dengan memakai sebuah add-on Firefox yang bernama Gspace. Gspace memungkinkan kita untuk mengupload file ke account Gmail kita. Dapatkan Gspace dari webste resmi Mozilla. Ketikkan gspace pada search add on, lalu klik install. Tentunya anda harus memakai Firefox untuk melakukan ini. Setelah diinstall, Gspace tidak langsung muncul, namun harus dipanggil melalui Tools > Gspace. Dia akan muncul pada sebuah tab baru. Seperti inilah tampilan Gspace:

Sederhana bukan? Jika anda merasa kurang familiar, mari bahas cara melakukannya. Pertama masukkan account Gmail anda dulu melalui tombol “Manage Account”. Kemudian klik ” untuk menambahkan account. “Add” Klik “Close” untuk menutup.

Kemudian klik pada tombol “Login” di sebelahnya, pilih account anda. Setelah itu Gmail akan menanyakan passwordnya. Isikan saja lalu klik “OK” dan tunggu sebentar. Setelah beberapa saat, status “Logged In” akan tertera di Status Bar bawah dengan font warna merah. Oke, ini tandanya kita berhasil masuk. Kini saatnya mengupload file. Untuk melakukan ini, sebaiknya anda pilih file yang berukuran tidak terlalu besar dulu untuk mencoba kemampuan upload. Misalnya file gambar atau dokumen (*.doc misalnya) Ambil file itu melalui tombol “Browse” di atas box “My Computer”. Lalu klik pada file itu, dan klik tombol panah ke kanan (Upload). Tunggu sebentar, upload berjalan. Anda bisa melihat prosesnya di progress bar bagian bawah.

Jika upload berhasil, anda akan melihat nama file dengan infonya di box My Gspace. Selain itu, prosress bar akan penuh dan terdapat tanda centang hijau di situ. Anda juga bisa melihat preview dan info detil mengenai file yang anda upload di box Status bagian kanan bawah. Bila ada gambar bergerak di bagian bawah, itu hanyalah iklan yang membantu finansial si pembuat Gspace supaya bisa melanjutkan karyanya. Biarkan saja, atau klik untuk menyumbangkan beberapa sen pada si pembuat sebagai rasa terima kasih

Download File Yang Telah Diupload

Setelah menyimpan file penting, suatu saat anda ingin menggunakannya kembali. Bagaimna mendownloadnya? Caranya sama seperti tadi. Pastikan anda masih login dan pilih file yang ingin di download. Klik tombol panah ke kiri (Download) untuk memulai download. File pun siap digunakan kembali.

Logout

Tentunya anda harus logout untuk menjaga keamanan account anda dari tangan jahil yang tidak bertanggungjawab. Klik saja tombol “Logout” untuk keluar dari account. Setelah beberapa detik status “Logged Out” akan tertera di Status Bar. Ingatlah untuk logout selalu, karena keamanan data tergantung dari penggunanya. Jika tidak dilogout, bisa saja nanti ada yang mengutak atik PC anda kemudian datanya dihapus. Apalagi kalau dari warnet, wah bisa runyam. Makanya hati-hati mengupload file, lakukan pada file yang penting saja dan jangan yang rahasia.

Penggunaan Gspace Pada Kehidupan Sehari-Hari.

Gspace berguna bagi yang menginginkan tempat penyimpanan yang praktis dan mudah digunakan, namun tidak memiliki flashdisk. Cocok untuk pelajar yang ingin menyimpan file tugasnya untuk kemudian dicetak di warnet favoritnya. Dalam hal ini contoh nyatanya adalah penulis sendiri. Dulu sih penulis suka memakai Gspace untuk keperluan tugas, dan menyimpan file-file langka di Gmail (waktu itu belum punya Flashdisk). Alhamdulillah, karena sekarang sudah punya, jadi Gspace sudah jarang dipakai lagi Gspace juga baik digunakan untuk mengajarkan pada pemula apa itu upload.

Oke, tidak terlalu sulit, kan? Kini anda mengerti cara menggunakannya. Anda dapat pula mengupload file-file lain di Gspace. Gspace juga bisa dijadikan tempat backup data bagi anda yang memerlukan.

Just installed this free version of GSpaceMobile onto the E71 to provide additional 7GB of online storage. The free version only allows file transfers between your phone and gmail box of max 1MB, but the full version doesn’t. I’ve also added the Firefox extension Gspace which will allow me to quickly add files from the PC and download easily later on from the phone.

Backup your data!

If your hard drive failed right now, what would you do? I want your answer to be to calmly go to your collection of backups and be thankful that you do frequent backups. There are a variety of ways to do this. Most likely the simplest and cheapest method for you is to burn your data on to DVDs or onto an external hard drive.

However, this does not protect you from the most serious of tragedies where your residence is destroyed. As the past few years have shown, nowhere is completely immune from a devastating natural disaster that can destroy everything you own. For that reason, it is important to have some sort of “off-site backup.” One solution that I use is to have one of your backups at another location. I keep one at my parent’s house in another state, but since I can’t update that all the time, it is important to have another solution.

Another good answer is to store your data online. As this blog entry shows, there are a variety of free online places to store data, however, many of these places have public accessibility, so that may not be the best possible solution for you.

One tool that I have been using is a Firefox plug-in called GSpace. It also has a desktop version, but I find the Firefox plug-in is adequate to my needs. One drawback to this method is that you will get an e-mail message for each file you upload, but it is pretty easy to archive bulk amounts of mail. Now, your data is in a relatively-secure password protected area that you have pretty easy access to, if the worst should happen.

So be prepared and backup today!

UPDATE: I did forget to mention when using GSpace, you will need to do this process over a length of time. Gmail will freeze up if you receive too many messages in a short period of time. I tend to do it this one folder at a time, but you can experiment and see what works best for you.

Last year I successfully went paperless and this year my goal is to render my desktop and local storage  redundant for as many day-to-day activities as possible, using a browser as my only client for a new life completely in cyberspace. I still have 3 months to go until the end of the year, but even now the only thing I need my desktop for is audiovisual editing and the only thing I need my external storage for is archiving my extensive audiovisual library that I can’t yet move completely to cyberspace. So I can now list the basic suite of web apps that have allowed me to fulfill this year’s goal a bit early:

First,  some noteworthy web apps I use regularly that never had equivalents on my desktop:

• Twitter – microblogging
• Blogger, WordPress – blogging

Next, the web apps that have replaced their desktop equivalents:

• Diigo, Del.icio.us – bookmarking
• Yahoo Mail, Google Mail- email
• Yahoo Contacts, Ovi – contacts
• Google Calendar, Ovi – calendar
• Google Reader, Feedly – feed reader
• Google Notebook, Evernote – note-taking
• Google Documents, Zoho – word processing, spreadsheets, presentations
• EditGrid – spreadsheets
• Autodesk Project DRAW – drawing
• Aviary – image, color, and vector editing
• Meebo – instant messaging
• Toodledo – get things done (GTD)
• TSheets – time management
• MindMeister – mind mapping

Finally, the storage I currently use in cyberspace, replacing my local storage:

• Box.net
• DropBoks
• Gspace – turns each Google Gmail account into a virtual 8GB “drive”

The redundancy you see in some cases is deliberate and you can consider it as risk management. I also use various synchronization programs, all freely available to synch online services on the web with my Nokia N95 8GB and Windows Vista desktop, the latter is mainly to ensure high availability of my data in the absence of an Internet connection or when a service is offline. Google Gears takes care of my data from many of their online services with an offline mode synched to my desktop, so I use this as well. I’m using the free versions of all of the services I’ve listed, which completely fills my needs for now. I use the Firefox 3 browser almost exclusively, but I’m also testing Google Chrome. To ensure ultimate portability “on the go” I keep some open source portable applications, including a Firefox 3 browser with all of my addons and plugins along with Google Chrome, on a 2GB USB memory stick on my keychain.

I’ve kept this post relatively short because I plan to go deeper into detail later about these and other web apps I’m using. I mainly wanted to start a dialogue about the use of these web apps and their lessening of our dependence on the desktop and local storage, so I’m looking forward to seeing your comments about your own experiences.  I’ve already become fairly comfortable living in my browser as a denizen of cyberspace, what about you?

Gmail is een van de beste webgebaseerde emaildiensten, als je het mij vraagt: snel, vlot, labelsysteem, goede zoekmogelijkheden, ingebouwde RSS, … en 5 Gb webspace Het geestige is: met behulp van een Firefox extensie, GSpace, kun je de 5 Gb als virtuele drive gebruiken. How ’bout that?

Download en installatie stelt niets voor. Zodra Gspace is geïnstalleerd heb je toegang tot Gspace via een werkbalk of knop in de menubalk die een nieuw tabblad met een FTP-achtige interface: links staat de inhoud van je lokale pc, rechts staat je gmail-account. Selecteer een bestand links en verzet het naar je gmail-kolom, en klaar is kees. Als je wil kun je alles ook in folders organiseren. Via Inbox schakel je trouwens snel weer over naar je normale gmail. Er is blijkbaar ook een ingebouwde fotoviewer en mediaplayer, maar daar heb ik nog geen tijd voor gehad
