So now that the new PlayStation 3 Slim has been unveiled, the question for every Indian is “When can we get our hands on it?” Well, Digit’s got the exclusive details, straight from the horse’s mouth!

You can expect the PS3 Slim to hit retail shelves in India in November, for around the same price as the current 80GB ‘Fat PS3’, which received a price cut to now retail at Rs 19,990. However, while the Fat PS3 also comes bundled with two games (Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and GT5 Prologue), the PS3 Slim will carry no such packaged titles.

Atindriya Bose, Sony Computer Entertainment – Country Manager, told Think Digit: “As you know, the worldwide launch for the PS3 Slim is scheduled for September 1, and since we normally get our shipments from the European market, that usually means a delay of about a month and half.”

“However, with Diwali coming up, logistics become a little difficult. So we are targeting a launch for the PS3 Slim some time in November,” he said.

“We realise the disappointment during the festive season and have hence released the 80GB PS3 bundle with two free titles for gaming enthusiasts,” he added.

And what’s more, Bose revealed that the Fat PS3 will be phased out once current stocks are sold out.

“Once the current lot of 80GB PS3 units are sold, we will be making only the 120GB PS3 Slim available in the Indian market,” he said.

So, will you wait out till November for the PS3 Slim or grab the 80GB PS3 bundle with the two free games?

No, I’m not talking about F1 2009 the real racing series…I’m talking about F1 2009

No, I’m not talking about F1 2009 the real racing series…I’m talking about F1 2009, the video game. It has been since 2001 that a Formula One game has been launched on Microsoft’s console, the Xbox (now XBOX 360). At that time, the F1 game was developed by EA Sports (I will not go into how I feel about them in this blog. In short, I think their sports games are worthless, unoriginal and overpriced with very few redeeming qualities).

About a year ago it was announced that the FIA had licensed the Formula One media rights to Codemasters. Prior to the end of the Brazilian GP 2007, those gaming rights were held by Sony who obviously only released the game to their console, the PS2 and PS3. With Codemasters now owning the license to the game, it will be released across all platforms on Wii, PS3, XBOX 360, and PC. I’m writing this for a few reasons. One, I got my work done for the night and I’m bored but two, I think its important for Codemasters to hear a real F1 fan’s wants from their game. And it’s not just me wanting these things. Formula One’s global TV audience utterly dwarfs that of NASCAR and every other global sport EXCEPT futbol (soccer) and cricket. Weekly TV audience figures have been known to push a quarter billion people. And for sure, many of those fans are gamers with access to a console or PC and want to drive in a game, what they see on TV and to feel those emotions that make car racing, and particularly F1, unique.

So I’d like to propose a wish list. A list of things, that as a dedicated F1 fan, I want to see. Partially this list is a list of DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE make the game like X. Feel free to comment at the bottom with your own suggestions and wants. So here we go. The list is in no particular order of importance.

Sound: GT5 Prologue is the most recent console game to feature a Formula One car in it. Built for the PS3, I was initially interested to hear that Sony had added an F1 car to the car list in the game. Upon further review, I was completely disappointed…mostly by what I heard in the car’s engine sound.

Below are two youtube links. The first is an onboard video of the F1 car in GT5 Prologue. The second is a real life F1 onboard video from the Ferrari F2008, which the Sony car F1 car’s engine is modeled after. Listen (most importantly) to the sound coming from it and the environment, ie wind noise, engine revs, downshifts, backfires, and general noise tones and levels.

WoW. Is it just me or is the sound of the car in GT5 absolutely pathetic? The engine notes are so smooth, the ptich is WAYYY too high and there is just no feeling that the car you’re riding with is running at 19,000 rpm and 750bhp at 215mph. Instead it sounds like my bed fan on super speed. Downshifts are way to smooth and fluid, it just doesnt even sound like an engine of any kind.

The next bit with sound that I’d like to see done well, is the sound from the “tv camera” angles in the replay. I realize the above video is of real life, but that is a goal to shoot for. The cars are painfully loud when they come by with a whole lot of volume and a variety of noises from a low grumbling low rev and idle sound to the scream (not GT5 squeal) of the engine at full tilt. It should be fun and realistic to hear the cars drive by instead of a variation of the in car sound as GT5 currently has it. rFactor, a PC racing simulation is as close as I’ve heard to good audio on a simulated F1 car.

Detail is another important factor. The little things are what is going to make this game sell and these are the things Codemasters should focus on. Waving Ferrari, Mclaren, BMW, Renault flags in the stands, different accents of drivers and pit audio, air horns being blown by fans, post race champagne celebrations, marbles and dirt getting kicked around on the track, variations in curbs by track (curbs vary by track quite widely) sparks from the undercarriage, flames, a living & breathing crowd that are not simply stationary figures that have a hand in the air as most previous games have had. Blue, green, and red lights at the end of the pitlane. Green to signal a clear pit lane. Blue to show oncoming traffic down the straightaway, and red to show a closed pit lane. Yellow flags being waved by track marshals. Little details that are not necessarily hard to implement will give the game SO much more re-playability in my book.

You should feel like you won when you do get to the podium…

Another big one in the detail book is something that I personally enjoy most about the game rFactor is the ability to, should you choose, to control EVERYTHING your car does in the pitlane. Speed, direction…ect. Its you who is penalized for speeding in the pitlane and even on a video game, it is a rush to let the pitlane limited out and power out onto the track.

AI should be impeccable too. Formula One is the pinnacle of motor racing. The cars, drivers, engineers, and tracks are the best in the world. Drivers should race, draft, attack, defend and drive like a Formula One driver would. In a recent game called Race PRO, released for the XBOX 360, the game proclaimed it had the best racing AI released to date. After playing the game myself…its good, but not the best like it said. On tight tracks, the cars lock wheels with each other (not in a racing way, but in a glitched way) hit walls because of cutting corners and don’t make any mistakes but just drive like computers that don’t really have much skill or variation in tactic. Not exactly challenging racing after you get good at the game.

As far as graphics go, I will give it to GT5. It looks really good. Shine on the cars is great. Tracks look great and I think Codemasters can do better. Using the EGO engine, the game will for sure look graphically better then anything to date in any racing game. The details will make a difference again. Sun position, track shadows and rendering, the track details and dirt, grime, and rubber buildup on the cars will make a difference in whether this sells as a gaming blockbuster or a flop, like the last Codemasters game was. Weather too is important and completely necessary to nail in the details. Unlike NASCAR, F1 stops racing only for the most biblical of storms. Rain transforms an F1 race in every way. Tyres change, the cars look different, they drive different and the atmosphere changes on the track. In the game, fans should pop umbrellas, the cars should throw rooster-tails of water skyward over 15 or 20 feet visibility should drop to near zero in a racing pack. The rain should bead off the replay and onboard cameras of the cars and the track should become more slick as rubber washes off it. Of course changing weather conditions would be awesome too.

This doesnt exactly look easy does it?

<img class="size-full wp-image-604 " title="china-a-96" src="http://thesixthisright.wordpress.com/files/2009/04/china-a-96.jpg" alt="Visibility in the rain should be something racers deal with in the wet.
Visibility in the rain should be something racers deal with in the wet. This doesn’t exactly look easy does it?

Multiplayer is an aspect that should be given a great deal of attention. Racing AI is only so much fun for a while. At some point, gamers will crave a race where the drivers theyre facing are thinking and feeling on a real time basis exactly the way they are, and only racing other people can deliver that. But as Atari’s Race PRO has so clumsily shown racing gamers, even a good game can be ruined by poor online play and reliability. Online race customization, full length races, good connection stability and lap time leaderboards are necessary.

I personally think that one of the game options aside from the usual “Quick Race” “Championship Season” “Mulitplayer” and “game options” menu should be a “Testing” game menu option. One of the most fundamental parts of Formula One, especially in the preseason, is testing. This is where the drivers can get miles under their belts, the cars get broken in and the teams can practice everything from pit stops to drafting other cars. Having open test sessions where a handful of teams and cars are screaming around the track is something I personally would LOVE to see. But the F1 circus visits a few tracks that are no longer on the race calendar that I feel SHOULD be in the final game as testing tracks. Spain’s Jerez, Portugal’s Algarve and of course Catalyuna are the three F1 testing hotspots each year. I think it would be great to be able to work on car setups, practice driving against the AI, and practice pitstops.

Testing is where you learn about the car, the track or just get miles under you. Lets see a testing mode Codemasters!

Savable replays are something that, since Forza 2, every racing game should have in its system. With a variety of camera views from TV cameras, to onboard helmet cameras, the generic engine intake cameras, and side pod and mirror cameras are all standard in F1 these days and of course should be in the game. But this option should include multiplayer races too. I want to be able to watch myself kick a friends ass online, or watch a sweet lap I had, or even watch what the competitor did to beat me.

Handling is what makes an F1 car unique. Its complexity is also unique. I’m not a game designer so I will leave it to them to figure out the details but 2009 cars are complicated beasts. Revving to 18,000 RPM, these cars have adjustable front wing flaps, a new power boost system called KERS and a variety of other wheel settings. The cars should drive like F1 cars do. I’m told Codemasters has enlisted the help of unnamed current F1 drivers to help make the cars feel true to life. In that light, lets see a simulation mode. Personally, I enjoy a good challenging racing game. I race with ALL assists turned off and I want the challenge of driving the car to be reflected in the game. Snap oversteer, understeer, tyre wear, graining. All the things that make pushing a car with that much power around a circuit fun and challenging. Of course not all gamers are as diehard and simulation pro as I am so having these assists is necessary for their sake, but for those that want to be an F1 driver but can’t afford it, are too old, and don’t have real world talent, I want to pretend I am one, if just in front of a tv screen.

Customization is something I’m torn on. While I feel it is necessary to have full customization over (most) of the intiquate details that make an F1 car handle as it does, I also think that customization in a different way could hurt the game. I would be a little turned off by the ability to design your own car (ie sponsors and colors) and would rather have that option for my personal racing helmet. Because I have played enough online to know how awful some people are at designing cars that look good, I think it should be left alone. I don’t want to see a hot pink car with a purple rear wing puttering around.

I would HATE to see this in the game. HATE

I think that’s about all I can think of. Im hearing that the game is coming along well and that much of what I have written about is actually included in the game but again, the devil is in the details. Race PRO is a great game, but it lacks in the finer racing details that make me want to play forever. I don’t really care how long it takes Codemasters to develop F12009. As long as it is done right and true to the sport, I’ll be a happy race fan.

PS3

I’m a little late on this because I am a pretty detailed person with a lot to say and with writing the Nintendo report, I needed a small break to collect my thoughts and also give time to the other things I do as well.

Even though I don’t own a Playstation, (I do however own a PSP) I was still looking forward to what Sony had to offer and possibly counter with Microsoft’s day 1 press conference. I also needed something to be excited about after Nintendo’s weak offerings. And dare I say, there were moments I was excited enough that even I wanted to go out and buy a PS3 just so I could play a few exclusive titles.

So Sony’s events was held at the Shrine auditorium, and clearly since they had this by themselves (Nintendo and MS were at the Kodak theater) they were able to build quite an electronically impressive stage and light show. They had at least 6 very large screens (possibly more) surrounded by numerous (30+) monitors. It looked very promising to say the least.

Unlike MS and Nintendo, Sony’s host didn’t seem as scripted (even though he was) and more human and thus more believable….and funny. Funny in the way his jokes and comments felt genuine, unlike the force fed lame lines that Nintendo’s Cammy and Alex for driveling off.

Throughout the event, they had there requisite slides and graphs and charts that are always questionable to me since every company claims the exact same industry leadership, growth, sales numbers, blah, blah, blah. But Sony did something innovative here….they used the creative aspects of Little Big Planet to build a presentation and it looked so awesome. A great way to show off the game and keep people interested in sales number and projections. Kudos to the person who cam up with that idea.

Okay, onto the meat of Sony’s offerings:

Movie Rental and Download service: Actually went live the day of the announcement itself, I suppose is Sony’s answer to MS/Netflix partnership. Sony will offer both SD and HD versions of many movies and shows with direct partnering with the major studios. SD rates will be $2.99-$3.99 where HD will be $5.99. You can also opt to purchase a movie outright for even higher, but I don’t understand this feature for any console (360 included). What happens if you someday upgrade to PS4? If you download to the internal harddrive, do you always have to keep the console forever to watch them? There isn’t an option to burn to a DVD that I’m aware of (is there?). You don’t get all the cool extras that you would get with a DVD purchase (out-takes, gag reels, making of, etc.) What if I want to take it over to a friends house some day? Does that mean I need to lug my PS3 over there? Seems lame. One neat aspect I do like though, is that if you own a PSP (firmware 4.05+) you can transfer content via a USB cable and watch on the go. Same if you have a PC. That’s cool.

Hardware:Sony will not be dropping the price on either PSP or PS3, but instead on the PSP will offer some upcoming specialized bundles for $199, and the PS3 will have an upgraded 80GB hard drive (up from 40) on all new consoles for the same $499. No other peripherals were shown.

Sony Home: Ah, the often talked about and just as often delayed Home was shown yet again. Did mention it was being tested in Beta, but no street date given (surprise, surprise). What they did show looked graphically impressive and a cool concept, and not to be critical, but I don’t get it. I buy a console to play a game or watch DLC, not to walk around a virtual house I can decorate and talk with friends in one large virtual IM chat room. I wouldn’t say I wouldn’t never use it, but just seems like an unnecessary distraction from hard core gamers, which clearly PS3 is targeted at.

PSP:No new models or design changes anytime soon. I was a bit surprised they didn’t have more apps mentioned like Nintendo did for the DS, especially the rumored Skype or phone capabilities. Two new bundles by the holidays including a Madden ‘09 and Ratchet & Clank versions.

Resistance 2: Lengthy hands on demo that was visually stunning and impressive. It felt as the yang to MS’s ying with GoW2. One of the games I wish I actually owned a PS3 for. There will be a Resistance version for the PSP which I’ll probably end up getting. I recommend seeing the trailer or demo…I can’t really describe how impressive it actually looked and jealous I am.

Patapon 2 & Loco Roco 2: 2 PSP offerings where shown in a video montage that should have these niche fans happy. Though Patapon 2 looked a lot like the original, I’ll probably still get it as I enjoy the first one still and a lot.

PS2: They’re still making this platform and if they’re accurate with their numbers, Sony is pretty impressive that this thing is still going strong at $199. So strong in fact they said there are at least 130 games in the pipeline for PS2….they didn’t mention how many were only to be release in Japan though.

Little Big Planet: This exclusive for PS3 just looks incredible. Here is the second game in which I am jealous that it will not be on the 360 and is tempting me to buy one. There cannot be enough said on how visually stunning and creative the world of Sack Boy will be. There will be so much player created content, it will be crazy.

DC Universe Online: Wildstorm and comic book artist legend, Jim Lee, was on-hand to show us a sneak peak of DC on-line. This will be an MMO that crosses over to a PC as well that will allow players to be either established super heroes or villains, or create there own and live out there fanboy fantasies. I kept thinking it looked like a prettier version of City of Heroes, and some of the moves and powers looked exactly the dame, just re-skinned. Not to many details on how the game works though and how hero/villain creation will be worked out and if (and how) you level up. I hope to see more details in the future.

Greatest Hits: Similar to Microsofts greatest hits, Sony will be taking many of the older titles and repackaging at a $29.99 price point. Expect a lot of classics here.

Motorstorm 2: Announced and a brief trailer. Looked cool, but nothing innovative I saw.

God of War 3: Probably the big announcement was the trailer for the return of Kratos. Out next year. No gameplay footage, just a teaser trailer.

Gran Turismo 5 Prologue race channel: There will be a unique PPV channel embedded with GT 5 that players can watch both live and taped events and shows related to various car racing gigs within a separate function of the game. I’m not sure what to call it, but it’s exclusive here. I’m not a huge race fan, but it seems strange to me to pay additional money to watch a real taped race or car show within a game itself.

Buzz series: Various incarnations of the Buzz game show will be made available on PS3 and PSP with future DLC available.

Various montages throughout the event showed regulars like Madden ‘09, NBA Live, Tiger Woods ‘09, Soul Caliber IV, Force Unleashed, GH World Tour, Rock Band, Sing It series, etc.

To sum it all up, Sony had a pretty strong showing that made up for the Nintendo sleep fest. They showed or at least announced some pretty good heavy hitters coming up, but clearly focusing on more hardcore gaming as opposed to Nintendos casual style and Microsofts hybrid of both hardcore and casual. ‘Home’ is still in beta and may debut by the holidays, and Sony has a counter albeit not as expansive video service at the MS/Netflix partnership. I expect to see more PSP titles in the upcoming year too. Microsoft and Sony clearly taking this seriously, although Nintendo has the Wii jugernaut behind them (despite crapware right now).

Against my better judgment, yesterday, I purchased a copy of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Ever since I

Against my better judgment, yesterday, I purchased a copy of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue. Ever since I saw the limited amount of content to be included in this “game” for such a steep price ($40 USD), I couldn’t shake the feeling that Polyphony Digital was merely delivering a glorified demo to milk hardcore Gran Turismo fans out of a quick buck before the real thing comes out, which some speculate won’t be until some time after 2009. Well, having played it for a few days prior, I’ve changed my tune…for the most part.

I guess before I truly begin to discuss my impressions of the game, I should explain how I define a “lack of content”. First off, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue features around 70 cars, from over a dozen manufacturers, including series newcomer, Ferrari. What’s surprising about this is the fact that GT5: Prologue includes more cars out of the box than many full games, including the likes of the recently released Need for Speed: Pro Street. Clearly, the number of cars couldn’t be the issue, could it? No. While 70 cars is only one tenth of the 700 featured in Gran Turismo 4 and an even smaller fraction of the rumored 900 cars set to be included in the full release of Gran Turismo 5, there’s still a nice variety of cars to choose from.

So, what could be the thing that troubles me most? Well that’s simple. While there is an abundance of cars available to the player, the track selection is meager at best, limited to six tracks and twelve layouts. No, not twelve layouts per track, just twelve layouts in total. This is where GT5: Prologue stumbles and falls to the ground. Before long, the track selection can grow stale and repetitive, seeing the same environments over and over again as you race around the same track for the umpteenth time during the career mode. This is where the sting comes in and your wallet begins to curse you for making this purchase.

But…(There’s always a “but”)

For the most part, what GT5: Prologue lacks in content, it makes up for in presentation and gameplay. Polyphony Digital knows how to draw the player in with an attractive set of front end menus and, most importantly, how to make cars look sexy. As you navigate the elegantly presented menu screen, the car you’re currently “in” sits behind it, amidst one of several eye-catching and gorgeous backdrops relevant to the location you most recently drove in. The camera slowly pans around the car, allowing you to see the entirety of is svelte figure and wonderfully proportioned lines.

To merely say this game looks good would be the understatement of the year. Gran Turismo 5 truly puts other racers to shame with its incredibly detailed and well lit car models (it’s amazing what good lighting can do to make a car look stunning), and detailed environments. While I’ve been a staunch supporter of the impressive graphics delivered in Project Gotham Racing 4, I can’t say it looks better than GT5: Prologue in any way other than the convincing weather effects. The in car view is also mighty impressive and my current favorite way to view the race, despite the loss of visual real estate.

All the great looking cars and environments wouldn’t save the game if the gameplay was lacking and I can happily say GT5: Prologue isn’t lacking in that respect. The numerous cars in the game have their own sort of “feel” to them in their handling and overall performance and all drive with an impressive realism about them, which feels great. A new feature, borrowed from the Forza series is the dynamic racing line, which changes color from blue to red to indicate you’re going too fast. Of course, for a most realistic and suitably challenging experience, this, as well as the other driving aids (variable traction/stability control) can be turned off prior to a race.

Overall, GT5: Prologue isn’t a bad game. I’m almost willing to say I overreacted a tiny bit. Almost. Once I came to grips with the fact that my only real issue was with what I perceived to be a high price tag (if the game was $20, I’d have no problem at all buying it), I was mostly fine with the lack of content because the gameplay made up for it. For me, a new fan of Gran Turismo 4 as of late, this is a pretty fun stopgap between the two full games that should, alongside its PS2 brother and my reigning favorite racing game, Forza 2, keep my simulation racing needs satisfied until Gran Turismo 5 finally decides to come out.

That or Forza 3, of course.

It goes without saying that diehard fans of the Gran Turismo series are going to add this to their ever growing collection regardless of what I say about it. For the rest of you who happen to be on the fence, take these words with a grain of salt. If you can, like I have, get over the initial shock over the lack of content, there’s a good game to be had here.
