The last generation of gaming had plenty of amazing games. The PlayStation 2, Xbox GameCube and Drea

The last generation of gaming had plenty of amazing games. The PlayStation 2, Xbox GameCube and Dreamcast all had their fair share of great games that will be fondly remembered. However not all of these amazing games were as influential as others. There a few select games that have influenced the current generation and the games within it. All of the games in this article have influenced the modern gaming industry in one way or another.

The first game I want to discuss is Shenmue. This was released in Japan at the very end of 1999 for the Dreamcast. The game was incredibly ahead of its time and boasted open worlds, real time day and night cycles along with very high production values. This game is often considered to be amazing but due to the poor sales of the Dreamcast most gamers haven’t even played it. Arguably this is the game that created the sandbox titles that we see so much of nowadays. I think, however, that it was too early. If it had came out at a later date when more people had moved up a generation (Be it PS2, Dreamcast etc) it would have had a greater influence.

It loses most of the influence it could have had due to another game though. That game would be Grand Theft Auto III. GTA3 allowed players to do things that they had never been able to do in previous video games. Rather than complete one level, then move onto the next they were free to choose what to do. This was done in the previous GTA games but due to the limited hardware of consoles back there it didn’t have the same effect. The world lacked atmosphere in the original GTAs and there was no real reason to explore the city. The jump up the Grand Theft Auto III was incredible. The world was no longer a boring, empty city but it was now filled with life, in complete 3D graphics and there was a real reason to explore and adventure. This was the start of the sandbox genre that many games today have followed and tried to make their own. None of them have managed to make a big enough jump to amaze gamers like GTA3 did though.

Now, back to Shenmue. Shenmue lacked appeal to the non-Japanese market. The majority of western gamers prefer the Americanised product with guns, blood and bad language so they completely ignored Shenmue but obsessed over Grand Theft Auto III. Shenmue rarely gets the credit it deserves because Grand Theft Auto III overshadowed in terms of sales and popularity. Even though Shenmue provided a believable, realistic world it also tried create a cinematic experience that gamers had never before witnessed which could have put a lot of people off. When GTA3 came out the majority of the focus was aimed at the free world and the story was nowhere as cinematic as Shenmue. This arguably let GTA3 use the world more effectively.

The sandbox world has been beaten these days though. Games like Yakuza, Far Cry 2, Oblivion and of course Grand Theft Auto IV have came leaps and bounds ahead the groundwork GTA3 left behind. None of them, however, have revolutionised it the way GTA3 did.

GTA3 was influential because of the sandbox world but there are some other games that need mentioned. Halo: Combat Evolved being one of these. The PC was always the home for First Person Shooters and consoles generally lacked them. Games like Doom, Quake and Duke Nukem were all born and raised on the PC. I’m not saying there were no console shooters before Halo and I’m not saying there were no good ones either but it was mainly PC.

Halo was the definitive console shooter. The PS2 and Dreamcast lacked FPS’ that really made a big jump so when Halo appeared as a launch title for the Xbox people were blown away. The fact that Halo was a launch title makes it even more influential than it would have been normally. Most launch titles tend be poor in comparison to later games but Halo stood strong as one of the best games on the system and the last generation as a whole. This was the FPS that started to appeal to console owners. Whether it’s because of the icon that is Master Chief, the fact it was bundled with the Xbox and everyone got to play it or maybe the marketing really worked, there is no denying the influence Halo had on the console shooters.

I need to give a mention to Goldeneye 007 though which is often considered to be one of the best shooters ever made. Goldeneye was released on the Nintendo 64 and was a good few years before Halo. Rare done an exceptional job with Goldeneye and proved that console shooters can be amazing before Halo was even announced. It didn’t have the same impact or influence that Halo did though. It did sell well and it was very well received but Halo was considered revolutionary and it was while Goldeneye didn’t set the world on fire the same way. I think the main drawback was that the controls weren’t as refined as Halo’s were which kept the PC the FPS platform of choice. Of course, Goldeneye wasn’t part of the last generation so it shouldn’t really be counted in this article.

This generation has been filled with both first person shooters and third person shooters. Halo led the way for the FPS’ while it was Resident Evil 4 that influenced the way of the third person shooter. Before RE4, third person shooters were zoomed far back and the camera was quite far back from your character. When Resident Evil 4 arrived though, it also brought the over the shoulder camera with it. No longer were third person shooters far back, but instead you viewed from the characters shoulder which allowed a whole new perspective and a much more enjoyable way of shooting. Every third person shooter these days uses this new camera.

Gears of War had a great influence from RE4 in particular. Rather than a horror template, Gears of War went for the full action template with hordes of enemies and lots of set pieces which really utilized the over the shoulder camera. It is also implemented a cover system which was extremely influential itself has influenced this generation quite a bit already but that’s for a different article.

Resident Evil 4 was extremely well received by critics and developers alike. It was the first time a camera like this had been used and it really did change how games played. It refined the gameplay of them and made third person shooters a lot more enjoyable than they were before.

There are other games that have had a smaller influence from the last generation too. Guitar Hero set the bar for music video games as well as creating a peripheral that really changes how the game played. The prototype for Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry, also had a small influence on action-adventure games by creating a very enjoyable experience with a mixture of exploration, story development, waves of enemies and multiple bosses. God of War also had a little to do with this.

However, some games didn’t get the influence they deserved. Both Shadow of the Colossus and Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath come to mind. Both of these were well received, Shadow of the Colossus in particular. If these two games had managed to influence this generation on a greater scale it would have been very different. Shadow of the Colossus was an amazing experience throughout and placed players into an amazing world where many magnificent creatures inhabited. Through the sense of mystery and the gameplay that was made up of pretty much boss fights only, it turned out to be incredible. There was so much that Shadow of the Colossus done really well besides the core gameplay, the connection to Agro, the sense of scale, the story and nearly everything about it was pulled off fantastically. Stranger’s Wrath tried to innovate the FPS genre through the use of the crossbow which, combined with the highly detailed quirky world, made it a completely different FPS from the rest. The different mixtures of gameplay which were all evenly balanced helped this be a great game. If games like these had got the larger influence they had this generation would have been completely different. Rather than contain a lack of ideas, games would have took more risks and stepped away from the safe path of generic ideas and gameplay (Not every game this gen is like this though).

If the main games I mentioned earlier didn’t come about, would this generation have been the same? To be honest they wouldn’t have but I think another game would have taken their place after a while. Eventually an FPS would have come to console, like what Halo done and brought on many waves of them. If GTA3 wasn’t released then Shenmue would have taken its place. If neither had been released his would have came along differently. If Resident Evil 4 hadn’t created the over the shoulder camera then I don’t know what would have happened. I think eventually something would have come around to change third person shooters but I doubt it would have been the same. I doubt the same camera would have been used but I can’t think how it would have changed.

The last generation was a huge influence on this generation but that goes without saying. The generation before the last generation influenced it and it will keep on going back that way. There were a few select games that had a huge influence on this gen and formed a lot of the games we see today. Some games were overlooked and if they weren’t, this generation could have been completely different.

I decided to begin a new series of about 10-15 new pastel drawings over the weekend. I cleaned up the dusty studio a bit but then decided to move a tarp to my bedroom/livingroom and work like I used to when I was in college. It was pretty sweet. I was able to churn out one nice new drawing in a few hours – at least to a done but not quite finished state – and fix up an old drawing that was sitting in my studio for a couple of years. The older drawing still needs to be finished, but I completely re-did the thing and it looks much better than the one before. I was also able to check out a new medium I was experimenting with on oil paintings about two months ago. I wanted to see what this mixture looked like after drying for a time. It looks pretty good. Now I just need to finish the painting. So many works unfinished these days…

Once I locate a means to take new images, I will post some of this new work on the blog and on my artspan and possibly zatista sites. I have a large amount of work to add to these sites, and I need to invert a number of the images too since my slides were backwards when I scanned them. I didn’t realize they were backwards until I went through the original works last month and re-boxed them. I had the originals stored in a very nasty spot which caused a bit more damage than I would have liked to the drawings. They are still fine, just not “as” fine as they were when first completed. The impermanence of pastel is unforgiving.

I’ve lost a few days of working from being addicted to Civilization IV. I have loved these games since the first one many many years ago. I should note, however, that by “lost” I refer to losing days of working on art directly. I never really feel a day has been “wasted” which “lost” usually implies, while playing Civ. This game has brought me endless ideas and understandings of systems and processes, even if the newer games are falling quickly to an inane multi-player, speed-gaming, pro-combat world. The games, to me, are engaging and refreshing (of my mind). Once, I tried scheduling days just for civ, followed by days of working on paintings or drawings. Wow, that was a mistake. Now I let my mood guide me like I should have from the start. If I wake up today and want to draw, I will draw. If I wake up and want to finish that war with Montezuma of the French, I will end him.

Yesterday, I lost a day to Grand Theft Auto 3. I bought this game when I bought my PS2 back in 2004. I played it a couple times but never really got into it very much and had trouble with a couple of early missions. So, with nothing really else to do, I decided to try it again but this time just run around the city and not do the missions right away. Much better. A whole day lost to the island. But then the rest of my night I spent sending destroyers against triremes. Awesome. Tomorrow, I am sure to hit the oils.

Successfully complete all 50 stunt jumps to get an additional 2.5%.

Collect all 200 pigeons (flying rats) to get an additional 2.5%.

Find all random characters and complete their missions to get an additional 5%.

Successfully complete all 20 vigilante crimes to get an additional 2.5%.

Kill all 30 people on the list to get an additional 2.5%.

Beat friends or computers at every activity to get an additional 5%.

Get all your friend’s special abilities and do all their activities to get an additional 10%. Note: This does not include Dwayne or Roman.

Easy health
Dial “911″ on your cell phone. You will reach a voice menu. Dial “2″ for an ambulance. When the ambulance arrives, the paramedic will restore your health for approximately $1,000. After he refills your health, kill him to get your money back.

Easy money
Go to an ATM, then cause a traffic jam to the area. Wait for someone to take money from the ATM, then kill him or her. Make sure to block any nearby roads so the ambulance cannot get to the murdered victim. Take the money they dropped on the ground. Then, run a short distance away, and go back. The money should have respawned on the ground. You can repeat this as many times as desired. You can also kill more people taking their money from the ATM to increase the amount of money that respawns.

Find an area with a lot of people. Then, position yourself a decent distance away, and enable the “Spawn Jetmax” code. The boat should spawn above the people, fall on them, and kill them without raising your wanted level. You can then pick up the money dropped by the people killed. Repeat this process as many times as desired.

After completing all of Stevie’s 30 vehicle thefts, go to the garage in south Bohan. Then, enter one of the “Spawn” vehicle codes, and take the vehicle to the garage to get the indicated amount of money as long as the vehicle is in perfect condition. Repeat this as many times as desired.

Cognoscenti: $9,000, Comet: $6,000, NRG-900: $2,500, Sanchez: $1,200, SuperGT: $11,000, Turismo: $11,000

After completing all of Stevie’s 30 vehicle thefts, take a taxi to the Perseus on Pyrite Street and Bismarck Avenue. Walk to the Grotti car dealership with a baseball bat. Use your baseball bat to break open the window on the east side of the building near the tree that has a Turismo parked behind it. Try not to damage this car. Take the Turismo, and drive it to Stevie’s car shop. Taking the Charge Island bridge to Bohan is the best route. Stevie will give you approximately $10,000 for the car, depending on its condition. You can then take a taxi back to the dealership and do it again.

Steal an armored truck, and blow it up to get approximately $1,100 from the piles of money surrounding the wreckage.

There is a glitch in Aldeney at the intersection of Tudor and Port Tudor, close to the prison where you visit Gerald. You can find a total of nine armored trucks arriving back-to-back. Highjack one, then block the road. Another one will appear. Blow them up one-by-one. There is a total of approximately $1,100 on each truck, which is especially useful when just starting out or if you need money.

Steal a Securicar, and blow it up to get approximately $1,000 from the piles surrounding the wreckage. To do this without getting a wanted level, you must drive it and get it damaged until it catches fire and explodes. Do not attack it with a weapon or you will get a two star wanted level. If the smoking Securicar stops running and still is not on fire, use your cell phone to call anyone, then hang up while it is dialing. The Securicar will start again, allowing you to do the last amount of damage to get it to catch on fire and explode.

Go to a strip club, and kill the strippers. Each one drops about five or six wads of cash, but all the guards will attack you.

Easily lower wanted level
If you want to get rid of your wanted level, simply start a mission. Your wanted level will instantly go away. If there were any police cars chasing you, the police will be gone but the cars will still be there.
To lose your wanted level, simply enter a safehouse, and save your progress. When you wake up, your wanted level will be gone.

Repairing engine
If your vehicle breaks down and will not start, call any number saved in your cell phone or “911″, and your engine should start again.

Quick repair
While in a vehicle, if you drive over a health pack, your health will be restored and any damage to your car will fully repaired. This is very useful while playing online in a vehicle that has caught fire.

Parking more vehicles
Outside your first hideout is a small parking area to park your vehicles and save them. Instead of parking your vehicles fully within the lines, you can park your vehicles partially within the lines to allow for more vehicles to be parked and saved.

At the start of the game it would appear that you can only save two vehicles parked in the “Residents Parking Only” parking spaces in front of your safe house. However, if you can find other “Residents Parking Only” places around the city, you can also save vehicles there even if you do not have a safe house at those locations yet.

If you attempt to use the trick to keep more than two vehicles in any one parking space, it will only work until you leave the current game session. If you shut off your system, play a multiplayer game, or load your most recent save, all but two of your vehicles will have disappeared. It seems to either save the two vehicles closest to the center of the parking space or two at random.

Fast travel
To avoid wasting time driving all the way across the city, call a taxi. They will take you to your destination for your mission, stores, safe houses, or even a waypoint marker. You can skip through the taxi ride, allowing you to travel across the entire city in about ten seconds. This can also be done during missions.

Easy Assassin’s missions
Most of the Assassin’s missions can be completed easier by using a helicopter. Land on a high position overlooking your target, and use the sniper rifle to kill them.

Easy headshots
It is sometimes difficult to get headshots, which do count. With some practice, doing the following is an easy way to get headshots. Press [Auto-Aim], then use the Right Analog-stick to move the auto-aim target around your victim’s body. Barely move the Right Analog-stick as you are shooting. This puts bullets in the chest and head, and results in an easy instant kill.

Easy drive-by shootings
When you can, call Roman, and have him send a taxi to you. Let the taxi drive you around. You will be able to shoot at people without the driver stopping. He will also run past the cops and blockades as much as possible. When you get stuck, choose to end your ride at a destination without a wanted level.

Easy emergency vehicles
Dial “911″ on your cell phone. You will reach a voice menu that allows you to call the police by dialing “1″, an ambulance by dialing “2″, or a fire truck by dialing “3″. Select the vehicle of your choice, and wait for them to arrive. They will stop and look around for the emergency, allowing you to easily steal their vehicle.

Getting away from police
When running away from the cops, you will have a circular area in which they look for you. However, if you get out and another cop sees you, it changes. To use this to your advantage, barely get out of that circle, which you will see on your radar. Then, just sit there for about five seconds instead of flooring past it.
If you are at a four star wanted level or less, find a place with grass or sand. The cops will follow you in, but they usually cannot get back out. You can then just drive away.

No wanted level when arrested
When you are being arrested by a cop, instead of pressing A (with Xbox 360 controller) immediately, click Right Analog-stick (with Xbox 360 controller) to crouch. You will still be able to walk away, but you will not get a two star wanted level.

Calling for backup
Steal a police car, and any time you are in trouble, press LB (with Xbox 360 controller) while your car is stationary. Select “Call For Backup”, and within minutes you will have two cruisers full of police who will fight on your side unless you shoot someone. Note: They will turn on you when they realize you are not a cop.

Killing blind firing enemies
To take out an enemy that is blind firing, aim for his shooting arm or hand while it is exposed. Once you wound him, he will usually stumble out of cover, giving you an easier kill.

Killing pedestrians without fighting
You can kill most pedestrians by repeatedly running into them against walls. This is a good way to get easy money without alerting the police.

Regaining health during missions
You can leave the mission area and go to a Cluckin’ Bell, hotdog stand, etc. and eat food to replenish your health if you are low and cannot find a health pack. This is especially useful on missions where there are no health packs in sight. Note: You can also take a taxi to those locations during missions.

Avoiding toll booths
Drive through any toll booth with any emergency vehicle with the sirens on. The booth attendant will open the gate, and you will save $5.
Drive a normal car up to the toll booth. As you get close, slow down and jump out while making sure the car passes through the booth. Then, walk past the booth, and get in your car. -From: Mike
While in a vehicle or on a motorcycle, drive up to the toll booth. Stay on the far side of the booth. Niko will stick his arm out but not put money in the basket, and the gate will still open.
Drive a motorbike to the side of the pay toll wall. You will not pay a toll if you can drive through the small gap on the sides.

Free taxi rides
Get in a taxi, but do not skip the ride after choosing your destination. When you are approximately two blocks away from your destination, break the window, and start shooting. The cab driver will get out and run away, allowing you not to have to pay for the ride. You can also kill the cab driver and take his money, so he is actually paying you for the taxi ride.

Free internet access
Some of your safehouses have a computer in them that will not charge the $1 fee. The Algonquin safehouse has a laptop in it, and is somewhat far away from some of the internet cafes.

Free health boost
Enter an ambulance to get a small health increase.

Free shotgun shells
Enter a police cruiser to get five shotgun shells.

Carbine rifle
Use a helicopter, boat, or simply swim to reach Happiness Island. Go inside the first door of the Statue Of Happiness. There will be a security guard with a carbine rifle. Kill him to get the Carbine rifle.

Getting Desert Eagle early
To get the Desert Eagle before you can buy it, kill the gun salesman in Broker that has it equipped, and then take it from him. Note: Doing this will prevent you from making any future purchases at this location. This will also cause bodyguards with shotguns to chase after you.

M-4 assault rifle
Go to the Easton area in Algonquin. At the Grand Easton Terminal, go up the stairs in front. Keep going around that floor until you see a small pond. Move past it until you see a turn going left. Go to the left to get in between a tall building and a smaller one. At the end of the passageway is a dead end. Turn and you will see a glowing orange garbage can. Behind it is an M-4 assault rifle.

Im putting up the torrent links for all the versions of GTA IV. With thousands of users unable to run it, it just makes sense to give it out for free. I have had isssues with Rockstar’s Social Club, extremely ridiculous frame rates and laggy gameplay. I don’t actually PLAY GTA IV cos I couldn’t be bothered about the missions but I do enjoy driving around in flashy cars (especially the Huntley Sport and PMP600) and killing people. Thats it. Pretty boring I must say but I kinda enjoy seeing the scenery and driving in cars I probably would never own. And I play it all at 14fps. 7fps in extreme rain. So for all of you who enjoyed GTA III and GTA SA, here it is…

Kivételesen egy híresebb bandáról fogok most írni. A Shiny Toy Guns egy kiemelkedően jó Dance/Rock/New Wave/Synthpop gruppe, ami szerintem rendesen felbolygatta a hallgatható elektrórock híg fos állagú állóvízét.
2005 januárjában pedig kijött az első albumuk, We are Pilots néven.

Yea so my title is weird I know, but when I looked over at scooter his paw was in the water dish. He does this weird thing where he’ll put his paw in the dish and lick it off, or clean himself with the water…weird!!

Phantom whenever he goes to the water dish puts his paw in the water before drinking, my roommate told me it was probably to check the temperature? Who knows!!

I went to see Harold and Kumar and OMG it is sooo great!! But remember kids, it rated “R”. To parents, I wouldn’t let a child under 16 (because I know how some parents let their 16+ children go and see R rated movies), because there is more nudity in this one then there was in the first one. Lets just say they have a “bottomless party”. Anyways I love this movie it’s great, but seriously if you haven’t seen Harold and Kumar go to White Castle you need to see if first before going and seeing Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay.

Anyways so I got an A in English 101 and that means I don’t have to take the English Final!! I’m excited. Hopefully I can get an A in Math 090 and an A in Computers! Then I would have straight A’s and perhaps make the Dean’s List!! Wouldn’t that be something, in High School I never got grades like this, I think it’s messed up how they psych you out for college saying it’s difficult and that High School is preparing you for College. I was graded much harder or something in my sophomore year of High School! It’s crazy! And I actually understand what’s being taught to me. I know in part it is because of my age, the fact that I’m paying, but I think that it also helps when the teacher can teach the information and isn’t trying to make it be the most difficult thing. *sigh* ok.

Todd’s playing GTA3 right now, driving a Banshee! We really want GTA4 but we don’t have a PS3. It’s expensive and I’m going to use my stimulus check for a Lap Top for school, well that’s if I get a stimulus check… I did file, but I never got that notice in the mail that said “Oh because you filed we’re giving you, your stimulus…” how do I know what it says, well that’s because Todd and my roommates got one…so I’m unsure, but I really hope that I do!! And Todd’s planning on using his to buy himself a desk top for video editing! Did you know they have a terabyte hard drive now!?!?!? That’s 1,000 GB. INSANE!!!
