Hier haben wir einen interessanten Fall vor uns, der aufschlussreicher ist als manche Studie über das User-Verhalten in YouTube. Wir haben das Musikvideo „My little Boy“ (animated by Günther Auer) zum gleichnamigen Song von Rosivita & Klaus Karlbauer (Album Nachtblau 2006) auf 2 YouTube-Kanälen ins Netz gestellt. Nicht mal strategisch, sondern einfach so, weil wir uns diesbezüglich nicht akkordierten. Auf beiden Kanälen wurden von uns nach dem Hochladen keinerlei Aktivitäten mehr gesetzt.

Das Video, eine Animation haut-und fleischartiger pulsierender Landschaften zusammen mit dem Song „My little Boy“ ist schlicht und einfach GENIAL:

Now I know the obvious reply would be like Lyle Lovett** or Brad Pitt. Wait? What? You say Lyle Lovett isn’t an actor. Is too. Wait, what? Brad Pitt? NO you say, he’s won People magazine’s “Sexiest Man of the Year” TWICE. You know what? I bet you cash money I can find someone who doesn’t think he’s hot.

(This is where I get fired up.)

If there was a blog out there and someone said “Yeh, you know, I would totally *do* that girlvaughn even though she’s totally NOT hot” that would probably make me feel like shit*. That is just really fucking mean. Who the hell are we to be so cruel in a public forum? Why is it ok to talk about the way someone *looks*?? The body we are born into is a beautiful thing (sometimes helped with some mascara and lipstick, but mostly beautiful) and we should encourage people, men and women, boys and girls, and everything in between, to be comfortable in their skin, and confident that it is the person they are on the inside, not the size of their nose or their pores or the length of their roots that is important.

I’m not perfect, I judge. I just do it in my head. I hardly notice it really…it’s just more conversations going on up there…

we are nearing the end of our first journey in the world of glass art instructional videos, it will of course be available on dvd, and we are looking into forms of direct download digital delivery methods as well, we have worked hard on this and are very excited about its launch. as you can see my living room has been converted into a small studio, my wife has been out of town on business and I am hoping to get the place looking normal again before her return.-)

I dont know about others, but I can really end up in the artistic dull drums if I work glass alone, I believe glass is something to be shared, so I often find myself with friends that also love doing what I do.

here I capture a moment of time as my good friend Ryan Clapp works with a small tube encasement, he works with striking colors and loves silver (don’t we all?).  he has been coming out on Thursdays, and blowing glass, I am following up on an opportunity to blow glass with some other local artists from the Salem area. I love learning, and have found that being around other glass artists keeps me learning, I wish I could spend my whole life just melting, blowing glass, and photographing nothing but flameworking, but alas, there are other things that need doing. and I must do them. like make videos, speaking of which, we should have a few more videos coming out in the near future.-) I know that will make many very happy.-)

“Let’s all end the call with a positive close . . .”

Those few words ended up becoming the bane of my existence at a previous job.

I held what was supposed to be a part-time, telecommuting position as an account executive for a very small PR firm.  When I first began, the partners of the firm had one weekly conference call with all the team members.

I was a bit thrown after my first one when I discovered they liked for everyone on the call to say something positive, be it work-related or personal, at the end of it . . . hence, the “positive close.”

Hmmmmm.

It all seemed a little forced and a bit too “cum-bay-ah” for my tastes, but when it came to my turn, I gave it a whirl nonetheless and managed to come up with some positive spin about me being excited about the opportunity to work for such a great company.

I know . . .  blah-dee-bloody-blah, right?!

In hindsight, that makes me want to hurl, but still I was naive and trusting and happy to give my 100% to what I thought were great people.

Funnily enough, neither of the owners of the firm were particularly positive in their natural, day-to-day personalities . . . they both kind of bitched to me about everything, so I think they most likely ended the conference call this way because it was something they had been advised to do . . . . or read in a book . . . or took from a class they attended called Team Building 101.  Just sayin’.

Over time, as more clients were added to the roster so too were the weekly conference calls . . .  and, yes . . . the positive closes.

Three to be exact.

Three out of five working days . . . spent listening to everyone’s mind-numbing and moreover time-consuming positive closes.

Now, I’m a pretty positive person, but in my humble opinion, I thought this was taking it to the extreme . . . especially when some people’s positive closes could take almost five minutes or more.  By this time, I was working upwards of forty hours  a week trying to stay on top of a detail-oriented workload that needed to be completed in a timely, informative and creative fashion.  And, quite frankly, I did not need to hear that somebody was getting a new dog or that they were excited to be going shopping for a new dress or that they farted and it didn’t smell nor did I need to share my own mundane snippets of life such as that my littlest one had finally gone poop on the potty — oh yeah, I dared to go there!

Once or twice I thought about just passing when it came to my turn, but alas I never did!  I’m just too polite for that kind of behaviour.

It did end up becoming all a bit torturous and I would end up cringing at the end of every conference call.  Yes, my skin would literally be crawling when those words were spoken . . . “let’s end with a positive close.”

I never confirmed it, but I think others may have felt the same way too as on more than one occasion a sarcastic comment or two was made to me.  So much for the moral boosting exercise!  All I can say is thank goodness for the conference calls and that nobody could see my body language or the rapid eye-rolling.

When I gently suggested to the owners that maybe we cut the positive closes back to once a week so as not interfere with the clients’ demands, it was met with hostility and I was told that the work needed to get done . . . regardless.

In the end, this turned out not to be the company for me . . . the job I ended up doing in the end was simply not the same one I had been hired for.  Too many changes, too many bosses and too many bloody positive closes.

And, on that note . . . my positive close is . . . . . . ha!  As if I’d go there!

you know, when I got involved in video and film type stuff I was just a kid, now here all these years later, I can look back and say, not much really changes. sure, we use digital sensors instead of film emulsion on a cellulose backing to record the images, but pretty much the rest is the same. I have a saying “everyone has a video camera, but only a few make programing worth watching.” and the same is true in glass art, everyone has torches, but only a few can really work borosilicate glass, not to say people cant learn enough to be a hobbyist with it, its very possible, but only a very few take it to the step of making it their life work, and only when you make everything you do revolves around glass art do you really start seeing the bigger picture. its hard work, long hours, it can be barely profitable or highly profitable, and I find myself right in the middle of it all.

Glass has captured me, working it, thinking about it, blogging, and vlogging about it, and working it every time I get the chance. I have to wonder how many addicts this art form has claimed.-) The one regret I have in all of it is not having the time to produce even more videos, Blog entries and online galleries and photo albums. its frustrating to realize that I have so much further to go when it comes to discipline. its hard work trying to create online content, and this blog is no exception. I don’t consider myself a writer, which makes it even harder at times, I am still amazed when I log on to find out that people are reading the stuff I put on line, and even more amazing is the number of people that have been tuning into the live broadcasts from my little studio.-) I have not really advertised in any way that there is a window directly into what I am doing right on my website, and yet, I have viewers each and every time I live broadcast, its a little spooky that I may actually have a fan or two.-)

so I find myself wondering how I can best serve the online audience I do have, the simple answer is that I could provide more content on a more consistent basis. and that is really my real goal, more blog entries, more videos on youtube, more instructional dvds, (the first one is almost finished.-) and so I take this moment to say, I am sorry for the less than perfect record of online posts that I have been producing. I will make every effort to do more, and keep a stream of media flowing for those that are interested.-)

Well it’s been a little while since my last update so I thought I’d better get on here and write something new!  It’s been a pretty crazy couple of weeks with work, personal life and of course the car.

WORK:
The latest round of developments at Russell Investments has made me a little unsettled and as a result, made me turn once again to the open market to see what’s available and how much I’m currently worth.

Be it luck, skill or ‘right place, right time’ – fortune smiles and within a couple of days I had 3 offers on the table.  This was shocking to say the least but it was also very comforting to know I was of high-value on the open market.  Haven’t decided yet, but it’s looking like a move is going to happen soon.

Had to sit one of those psych-tests for one of the above roles – been there done that so took a pretty lax approach to it.  Supposed to take 2.5 hours but walked out in 1.5 – I thought I was doing something wrong, but oh well – I tried.  Got a call the next morning saying I scored in their top 1%… hmmm~

PERSONAL:
You know, I think it’s the stress of everything going on around me that’s really taking its toll on my mind.  Summing it all up, I think I’m going nuts!  Too much work, too little time, not enough hands~  Why can’t they just say OK to the human cloning programs, I’ll sign up!!!

A big thank you to Roxy for putting up with my crazy ramblings and random outburts of crazy at home – for such a s-mall mall girl, she has a really big & generous heart!  Could never ask for more

Off to Japan (Tokyo) for some work in a week, going to bring Roxy along and turn it into a little getaway as we’ll have 4 days to ourselves.  This should bring back some sanity – stay tuned for photos/stories.

THE CAR:
A couple of things have happened since our last update:

* cooling problem resulting from a overheated fuse (fixed)
* made an appearance & mention in #113 of Performance Imports
* featured article on car & build in #114 of Performance Imports

Couldn’t be happier actually…  (113) featured the R34 10th Anniversary Cruise put on by SAU.  My car & name was mentioned for claiming the “Best R34 – non GTR” award.  I was also very pleased with the fact that Project R34 – SATANIC graced the title image of the article

(114) was what we’ve all been waiting for… 11 months now actually since discussions first started with the editor/photographer.  But we’re there and it’s on the shelves at all good newsagencies.  My thanks goes to all involved but in particular Mitch Smith (grease-monkey), Chris Brasher (shutter-bug), and Jason Round (mag-guy).

A few years ago when I first got the R34 and joined Skylines Australia; I entered into the ‘Show n Shine’ with the hopes of having a good day, meeting fellow owners, and getting some inspiration / ideas about where I want my R34 to go in years to come.

That I did and even though a lot of the original inspiration / ideas are now out the door – look where we are now!  500rwhp, a one-off custom creation, featured in magazines & DVDs…  simply WHOA!

So, bring on December 2009 and it’s again time to enter the whore into the show as a serious competitor.  I would never have imagined that I’d be in a position to say that considering the quality of vehicles I’ve seen in the past but this year, we’ll give it out best shot.

Having taken out the BEST R34 (non GTR) award at a smaller scale event, I’m confident that we’ll turn a few heads and hopefully walk away with something again.

So it’s time to draw out a plan and get the car ready for the show:

EVENT DETAILS:
Sunday the 13th of December at Fairfield Showground

A few weeks ago the driver side headlight on my Nissan Skyline R34 GTT decided to throw in the towel.  One moment, I’d have two very powerful Xenon beams coming from the front of my car, the next moment I was left with a winking car.

Funny thing was that on turning them on, the bulb would still flicker for a few seconds before dying.  This was a sigh of relief as it meant it was either fuses or ballasts that were “gone”.  Why “relief” you might ask?  Well fuses are cheap as chips & ballasts so long as you know where to look aren’t that expensive either.  Bulbs on the other hand cost a fortune!  A genuine Philips D2R bulb from Nissan will set you back a few hundred AUD

So off to Skylines Australia and JDMST to see if ballasts were available… offers left right n centre, but finally settled on a pair from Mr. Andrew Miles in Nowra – for all of $60 delivered!  Top bloke, great to deal with.  Received a package at work the other day containing not only the ballasts but also a spare BULB!  CHA-CHING I thought, good to have spares right?

So today, confident as a Rhodes Scholar, I swapped the ballast over – ZIP… I could literally feel the size of my manhood shrink as I stood in front of the car bewildered.

Refusing to give up, I cracked open the actual bulb housing…  to find THIS!

Didn’t I feel dumb right about now  So in went the “spare” bulb and voila – my R34 has both sets of eyes working again.  So what’s the moral of this story?  That an initial mis-diagnosis may not always lead to a horrific death of your patient… in this case, not only did the patient receive a new eye, but also the bit in the brain that processes the images.

So, the first day is a bit quiet.

It’s not common for me to post up photos of my car in any detail for privacy / security reasons – definitely not in a big batch anyway.  However, a thread on JDMST got me thinking – the car has REALLY come a long way.  I could yap on all day n night about it, but the photos can do the talking.

Took a while to dig up some of the old photos – but once I did, memories from the last few years have all poured back.  So many moments of joy & sadness, surprise & disappointment…

At the end of the day though, I think the amount of blood, sweat and tears poured into this thing was worth it.

… interessantes Buch mit so ähnlich kurzen Notizen wie oben. Das mit dem “sich nicht einmischen”: Gerade am Wochenende sagte mir ein Freund, dass er ein solches Verhalten seiner Eltern eher als Desinteresse verstanden hat. Und irgendwie umweht ihn da so eine Traurigkeit und ich weiss nicht, wieviel Tatkraft für die Zukunft da ist, bzw. fehlt.
