Spirit of Prophecy Bulletin

SMALL STRAWS IN A SOFT WIND by Marsha Burns — Dec. 22, 2009:

Beloved, I have already brought warnings to you to guard your heart with all diligence. Be aware that the enemy is roaring around, looking for those who will get in his most dangerous territory through allowing their emotions to run wild. Guard your thoughts and emotions, and refuse to allow the devil to bring discouragement, disappointment and depression. Rise up and embrace My joy, says the Lord, and be strengthened in your inner man. Draw near to me, and place your hope in My love for you. Resist the devil, for there is no temptation too great for you to overcome.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

One may have awakened early this morning, a little after midnight. One may have decided to write in one’s daily log. After finishing one’s writings, one may have prayed and opened one’s Bible to Psalms 146. One may have continued reading. One may have read:

Psalms 147

Psalms 148

Psalms 149

Psalms 150

One may have noticed that all five psalms began with “Praise ye the LORD.” One may have been encouraged.

One may have fallen back asleep. The alarm may have gone off. One reset it for 3:20 AM. When the alarm blared at 3:20 AM, one may have just laid there for a few minutes. One may have gotten up and preceded to one’s computer. Once logged in, one may have noticed that a pop-up window was open indicating that one should choose a network option. Safari may have been open with a message indicating that it could not connect to the Internet. One may have closed the pop-up window and Safari.

One proceeded to open Safari the second time. One may have gotten the same message indicating that it was unable to connect. The system again prompted one to choose a network for this computer. One may have tried Firefox as well. One simply did not have an internet connection.

One may have gone over to check one’s modem and router, both were unplugged. One may have plugged them in. One may have thought that one could not enter one’s prayer closet if this situation did not get resolved. One may have been willing to miss one’s special time with Jesus.

One may have tried to open Safari again. It may have been unable to connect to the Internet. One tried to set the network, but the options that were available were not working. One may have thought, “I have to get this resolved, I have to read the Spirit of Prophecy Bulletin for today.”

One may have thought to reboot the system and hopefully the desired settings would re-establish themselves. One may have shut down the PC. One restarted one’s computer. Once logged in, one may have clicked on Safari and it may have connected as usual. Thank you Jesus!

One opened one’s e-mail and read the Spirit of Prophecy Bulletin. One may have done a few other things as well.

One may have entered one’s prayer closet late. One may have begun to praise the Lord at 3:35 AM with joyful singing. One may have confessed one’s sins, thanked the Lord, and prayed for the sick. One may have prayed for a passage of scripture. One may have been led to Psalms 139. Thank you Jesus!

After leaving one’s prayer closet, one may have logged onto the website to pray for outstanding prayer requests. Afterwards, one may have thought about how one was willing to miss one’s prayer time for the sake of one’s computer. One may have wanted the issue resolved right away and felt that one could not do anything until one figured out the problem.

Lord, thanks for the help with the computer. Lord, please forgive one for getting one’s priorities mixed up by putting one’s computer and routine before you, in Jesus’ name, one may pray, amen.

As hundreds of people stood to their feet lifting their voices in song and praise, I felt a change i

As hundreds of people stood to their feet lifting their voices in song and praise, I felt a change in the atmosphere. I had never attended an event so full of life, love, passion, and desire. These young men and women were in love with Jesus Christ. They were the living testimony of His good works and the many blessings He had placed on their lives.

The next artist walked on to the stage and greeted the worshipers in the audience. He shared his testimony and introduced their song. The musicians were on point and we were ushered into another praise song. The beats were crazy. Everyone was into the song, but did anyone really hear the lyrics? I wonder if this is a prime example of what happens when the beats pull us in and we neglect to listen closely to the lyrics?

As I listened closely to the lyrics of the song, I was left puzzled. I later turned to my cousin who had the same puzzled expression on his face. We paused and listened closer to the lyrics of the song, which said, “I am a prisoner of Christ?”

What? I am a prisoner of Christ? Does that even make sense? Is that even possible? No, no, and definitely a big NO! The wonderful thing about Jesus Christ and His love for us is that we are given free will. Since the beginning of time, Jesus gave Adam and Eve the freedom to do His will or fulfill their own desires. They had the ability to choose right from wrong. Even after they sinned and until today, we still have free will. We can choose to come to church or stay home. Sadly, many Christians have chosen the latter. Granted, there are many reasons why one has made their personal decision to stay home instead of attending a church service. However, if you have a problem with your church, there are millions of other churches around the world to choose from.

Am I a prisoner of Christ? Well what does the word, “prisoner” mean? According to dictionary.com, a prisoner is a person or thing that is deprived of liberty or kept in restraint. The second definition is a person who is confined in prison or kept in custody, esp. as the result of legal process. So with those definitions in mind, I couldn’t possibly be a prisoner of Christ.

I have the liberty to worship Christ or not. The beauty of that decision is He will love us regardless. I am not confined. Christ would never confine those who follow Him. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for those of the world. With all decisions, there are consequences. To love Christ means that you must be willing to die for your faith. Christians will have a difficult time trying to stay faithful, because we will be forced to conform our ways to that of the world. We know that as Christians we must stand out, because the ways of the world are against the Bible. Times are easy now for some, but life will become quite uncomfortable over time for true believers. To hate Christ means that you will not gain eternal life. Once you know the end result of either path, it’s still your choice to identify which is the best route.

I sense some of my readers may ask, are we prisoners of Satan if not Christ? I would still have to say no. He doesn’t have the ability to imprison us. It boils down to our decision to follow one versus the other. It’s not too late to switch armies. Keep in mind, time is of the essence. For those of you who are still stuck at the fork in the road, choose Christ. Then proudly proclaim that you are a soldier of Christ, not His prisoner. I have!

Hebrews 12:1-6

Consider Him who endured. Hebrews 12:3

Private Raymond Cote was in Germany with the 12th Infantry after World War II. During maneuvers, he was put on sentry duty to guard some pontoons on the banks of the Rhine. Because of an oversight, he was not relieved for 6 days. He knew the general order that states: “To quit my post only when properly relieved.” So he stayed on duty day and night even when it rained heavily. Sympathetic farmers gave him food and milk. When he finally was relieved and got back to his outfit, his commanding officer praised his “strong sense of duty.” But some of his buddies wise-cracked that Cote had “a hole in his head.”

Followers of the Savior also need a strong determination to carry out faithfully whatever duty the Commanding Officer may assign. It may involve much discomfort, perhaps causing people to regard us as having a hole in the head. But our faithful Commander, whose head was lacerated by a crown of thorns, also had holes in His hands, feet, and side because He did His Father’s will.

What will strengthen us to remain faithful when tempted to quit some God-assigned post before our Lord properly relieves us? It is the thought of “Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself” (Hebrews 12:3). —vcg

I would be true, for there are those who trust me; I would be purse, for there are those who care. I would be strong, for there is much to suffer; I would be brave, for there is much to dare. —walter

To remain faithful where God has placed you, give God first place in your heart.

I’m a learner. I try to soak up as much information as possible. But, here’s the kicker. I often let that information stay in my head rather than soaking it up in my heart to produce transformation. Thus, intentionality, repetition, and the Holy Spirit are my friends. Instead of storing away the information in “hopes” of doing something with it later, I turn to them.

I intentionally make time to dig deeper, ask how to practically put this into practice, make a plan to put it into practice, and to ask the Holy Spirit what else.

Then I become Ms. post-it anywhere and everywhere. Reminders are key. By my bed you’ll see my goals, ways to seek intimacy with God, ways to be guarded and a “what-if” plan, and the scripture I’m memorizing for the week. My bathroom mirror holds promises to stand on and by my door there is the South African flag and the poster of Hope House kids. My phone has pictures of Lindo. I need to see, read, meditate, memorize, and be reminded in order to let these truths penetrate my heart and make that journey.

Finally, I make sure that I’m looking to Him and not getting distracted or relying on my own “plans” or practical steps. I desire to live a life that is sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading in ALL areas including what I’m learning and how I live out what I’m learning. I want to be a doer of what I learn and hear.

In conclusion: “So let us know, let us press on to know the Lord.”

Ps. 16: 7-9 I will bless the LORD who guides me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. 9 No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.* My body rests in safety.

You get up in the morning and you start making up your lists of things that you plan to do. It is our tendency to just go ahead and set up our day’s activities, but how many times do you ask God what He wants you to do? We can’t expect God to bless our plans if we have not even consulted him on what He wants done. God does not have to bless anything that He did not ask you to do. We should seek God first. The Bible tells us in Matt. 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God* above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. To “Seek the Kingdom of God” means to put God first in your life. To serve and obey Him. To ask Him to help you set the right priorities. Planning is good in that it adds meaning to our lives, but we have to rememeber to ask the One who gave us this day to begin with.

You may ask, well how do I find out what God wants me to do? By spending time in His Word (the Bible). God’s Word is full of practical ways on how to live our lives. And what to fill our time with. By constantly thinking about Him and His ways, will help you live a life that will bring joy to you and honor to Him. He cares about every aspect of our lives. When reading God’s Word we will gain insights that will help us make right decisions and set right priorities in our lives. So if you want to have a really wonderful day and want God to Bless your day, ask Him what He wants. Spend time in His Word and spend time talking with Him, and listening to Him.

If you don’t know Him, you can right now. Confess that you are a sinner in need of a Savior. Ask Him to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart and life. He will, 1 John 1:9 states that if we confess our sin to Him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. He’s waiting to hear from you. Do it now. Don’t wait another momemt. It’s the Best Decision you’ll ever make. God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have often wondered what the world has come to as it pertains, specifically, to the men of my gene

I have often wondered what the world has come to as it pertains, specifically, to the men of my generation. It would seem that being a man is no longer the objective of men any longer, being replaced by the lusts of the flesh and personal gain. This is not the manner in which a man is made, nor should any consider someone acting as that to be a man. They are merely children, lost and confused, as to the purpose and point of their lives. In an effort to thwart this growing epidemic, I have developed a system of “laws” if you will, as to how a man should live.

1. Above all things, fear God and uphold his Church. I believe this to be the foundational truth all men, and women, should live their lives by. If your life is based out of scripture, in love for Jesus Christ, you will exceed much in life.

2. Serve with diligence those placed in authority over you. None are appointed to positions of authority that has not been first chosen by God for His purposes and you shall be faithful to the task(s) appointed to you.

3. Protect the weak and defenseless. There is no greater honor to be found in life than to be a guardian and shepherd to those placed under your authority.

4. Be generous to those who are poor and of broken heart. Give to those who cannot obtain for themselves the basic needs required to live in peace and health. Be uplifting and encouraging to those of broken spirit.

5. Refrain from giving offense. A man is remembered by the words of his mouth and the actions of his hand. Be gentle and slow to anger, but stern as the need arises.

6. Despise false reward. Do not accept gifts or praise for actions not founded in scripture. To do so is shameful.

7. All peoples are equally and perfectly made. Treat your fellow man as you wish to be treated, and the same shall be returned to you.

8. Work for the welfare of all. It does no honor to he who works toward his own gain.

9. Guard and defend your family in Christ against all forms of evil.

10. Discourage unfairness, malice, and deceit in those you are able to influence.

11. Never abandon your faith in God or the Church.

12. At all times speak the truth. A man does not deceive nor does he manipulate, but is a speaker of Truth.

13. Persevere to the end in anything you begin.

14. At all times respect the honour of women and be mindful of your thoughts. It does one harm to look at a woman lustfully.

If men would conduct themselves in this manner I sincerely believe that this world would truly be a better place. Unfortunately, this is not the case. However, I can be one who does and all will know my character by the vows I’ve taken to live by.

*These are just the first 14 points. I will add the rest at a later date.*

Until next time,

J.H.

My paycheck

My first job (babysitting doesn’t count) was as a lifeguard. This was a natural choice as I was a springboard diver on my high school swim team and had always been an excellent, albeit slow as a troll, swimmer. The first pool I ever worked for was actually the city pool where I learned how to dive after my mom signed me up for the summer league team at age 12. I was paid the whopping wage of $6.20 an hour, $8.50 if I taught swim lessons, to sit around and scan my 10/20.

The next year, I stayed with the pool management company but switched to working at a waterpark. Not Hurricane Harbor big, but as big as you can get for a municipal establishment: the park couldn’t function without at least 16 guards on stand at any one time. I worked there for three summers, won Lifeguard Olympics, and was eventually promoted to Head Guard.

Not on my watch

Working was amazing because everyone was friendly and I discovered I could hold a tan, but it didn’t resonate until much later the true significance of the skills gained from my time as a lifeguard. Sure, I can extract a distressed guest from the water. I know CPR, rescue breathing, and all sorts of first aid. I am trained to work an AED. I’ve handled dangerous chemicals.

But I also learned how to interact with customers, lead training sessions, and manage scheduling for close to 100 workers. I will never, ever complain about any menial task given to me, because I’ve literally waded in three feet of water picking up tiny bits of baby excrement from the bottom of the pool. I’ve scraped handfuls of hair, band-aids, and dead birds from filters. Nothing you throw at me in an office can be worse than that.

I can’t enjoy going to pools anymore because I’m too curious as to how they operate. I want to know the mechanics of their pump room and whether their guards are certified by Ellis, the Red Cross, or another agency. It’s always weird to start working for a place you’ve frequented often, and subsequently it’s impossible to patronize an establishment where you’ve been an employee. I might not go to a swimming pool until far, FAR in the future when I have kids or something, but I’ll always be grateful to the company I worked for which taught me nobody is too good (not even 16-year-old girls whose daddies bought them a Lexus) to take out the juicy, juicy trash.

The closures are prompted by budget cuts, said Kansas Adjutant General Tod Bunting. Personnel and equipment at the armories will be transferred to other armories throughout the state. The Guard uses the armories for training and disaster preparedness. Bunting said the affected facilities should be closed by March. Bunting said the closure won’t diminish the Guard’s ability to respond to natural disasters. “We will still come out in the dark of night,” Bunting said.

The move is not supposed to impact long-term plans to build a new armory in Kansas City, Kan., Bunting said. But the recession’s impact on state finances likely means it will be a few years before the work begins. Closing the facilities will save the state $156,000 this fiscal year, which ends in June, and more than $264,000 next year. Bunting said additional armories could be closed if state revenue continues to decline and more budget cuts are necessary.

Besides Atchison, communities losing an armory include Burlington, Chanute, Cherryvale, Council Grove, Fort Scott, Garden City, Garnett, Goodland, Horton, Kingman, Larned, Phillipsburg, Russell, Sabetha, Salina East, Troy and Winfield.

It’s a stone sculpture of a guradian lion which guards pagodas and its treasure in myanmar. The lion was buried under the earth for hundreds of years so that it’s only 4 feet above the soil level. I took a sketch while I was on a trip to Pyay “Pago Division”, of Myanmar. That’s my proudful digital art and I also provide wallpaper as usual. 1280×800

Very tough to post when you decide to go on a competition binge. Competed in the following the past

Very tough to post when you decide to go on a competition binge.

Competed in the following the past few months:

Head 2 Head Combat Tournament – 1st Place No Gi Advanced

NAGA Worlds 2009 – lost 1st match in men’s expert via armbar, lost 1st match in men’s blue belt via DQ (reaped the knee)

RGDA Internationals Tournament 2009 – 2nd Place White Belt Beginner

I’ve been working guard passes more than ever. The usual path is attempting to get to their half guard and performing knee cut pass variations from there, however everyone around me is getting better and adapting accordingly with their new varied games including knee shields, switching up to DLR guard, etc.

I would like to really perfect my knee cut pass once I have the crossface + pummel from top half guard. Although many “defenses” are available for this particular pass, I’ve seen my instructor perform this pass countless times even though the person on bottom saw it coming. I want this to become a bread & butter “unstoppable” tech for myself.

My usual butterfly guard passes have mostly been attempts to flatten them out long enough to force them to play half guard on me and to go from above. I would like to develop a game where I could bypass the half guard phase and fully pass ala Jacare or Terere.

Closed guard breaking / passing once again consisted of getting to half guard first. I have recently been experimenting with fully standing up and breaking from there, even allowing them to sweep me knowing I could sweep them back and get in a better position from there. I was going by the philosophy of “it’s better to get swept than finished” from within closed guard.

I’ve been experimenting with the guard I use the least recently and going on a spider guard binge. Next in line would be the reverse DLR and DLR guards, then back to open guards. I enjoy watching how Cobrinha incorporates these particular guards effectively into his game and am attempting to pick out subtleties in an effort the emulate some of his style.

Recently read a post on how the Mendes Brothers train and their BJJ passing philosophy, and it’s summed up here:

in gi always pass on your feet in a semi squat in order to have the speed of a standing pass and the stability and control of a low or kneeling pass, this position should be drilled and exercises done regularly to make it very comfortable

in no gi most passes should be from kneeling

I’ll be drilling more from combat base more than ever in the gi passing aspects. Other than that all is well and I’ll attempt to post more now that I’m taking a month or two break from competition.
