È quando il freddo comincia a farsi più pungente, i turni infrasettimanali più frequenti, l’estate un pallido ricordo (come una “Gazza” comprata a luglio e rispolverata oggi col suo rosa slavato) e tu cominci a memorizzare persino il nome per esteso dell’esterno portoghese che la Lazio ha ingaggiato, che li vedi. Chi già a terra, chi in caduta libera volteggiando su sé stesso, chi ancora ostinatamente sul ramo ma destinato a cadere al minimo scossone o semplicemente per inerzia: ma tutti vittime di un destino ineluttabile che in inverno avrà già cambiato il volto dei nostri alber… pardon, della nostra Serie A. Elogio dell’allenatore moderno, foglia col foglio di via inscritto nel DNA.

Tutto é(ra) ricominciato con Guardiola e la scommessa del Barcellona che, sulle macerie della gestione Rijkard (altro tecnico rampante che pure ha ampiamente vinto la sfida portando i catalani sul tetto del mondo), ha affidato la fuoriserie blaugrana a Pep, monumento del “Camp Nou” ma praticamente a digiuno di panchina. L’ex-regista ha avuto carta bianca per eliminare dalla fuoriserie quegli optional (Deco, Ronaldinho) poco utili al progetto di “maquina” da calcio che aveva in mente. E ha stravinto. Facile direte voi, con questo Barça. Ma il nuovo azzardo del presidente Laporta ha dato i suoi frutti, tanto è vero che il leitmotiv imperante sulla stampa nostrana quest’estate era: scovare la versione all’amatriciana del tecnico spagnolo, cavalcando l’onda lunga proveniente dalla penisola iberica. Tutta questa lunga premessa per vedere, a distanza di alcuni mesi, cosa ne è stato dei Guardiola nostrani e capire come la ‘direttiva europea’ sia stata recepita dal campionato italiano.

Karim Benzema concedió una entrevista exclusiva a MARCA un día antes del Clásico, un partido que como él mismo confesó, va a ser el más importante de su carrera.

Aunque durante estos últimos días se ha hablado mucho del buen juego del Barcelona y de la falta de estilo del Real Madrid, el francés confía en las posibilidades de su equipo este domingo y no teme al eterno rival: “No me dan miedo ni el Barça, ni el Camp Nou”, confesó a Pablo Polo, autor de la entrevista.

De hecho Benzema acude a la Ciudad Condal con las ideas muy claras y en su mente sólo cabe un resultado: la victoria. “Yo no pienso en perder, sólo quiero ponerme a cuatro puntos”, dice mientras pide paciencia y asegura que “poco a poco llegará el espectáculo”.

Prefiere que no juegue Messi
En cuanto a la presencia o no de Messi sobre el terreno de juego, el delantero también habla claro: “Prefiero que no juegue Messi, es muy bueno”.

Además, aprovechó para salir en defensa de su compatriota Henry, muy criticado tras su mano ante Irlanda. “No se pude olvidar todo lo que ha hecho Henry por la selección francesa. El balón le dio en la mano y ya está, pudo pasarle a cualquiera”.

Aunque el domingo se juega el derbi español entre Barcelona y Real Madrid, el culé Xavi Hernández y el merengue Karim Benzema se adelantaron un par de días y disputaron el clásico de forma virtual, en el videojuego FIFA 10 para PlayStation 3, en su modalidad online (cada uno desde su ciudad de residencia), donde el resultado fue de 3-0 a favor del Madrid, con los tres goles de Cristiano Ronaldo.

El dato curioso fue que el delantero francés, quien obviamente eligió al Real Madrid, mandó a la banca a Raúl, capitán de los blancos, y prefirió a Gonzalo Higuiaín como compañero en el ataque (conocedor, no? jaja).

“El equipo que he puesto no se si saldrá en el Camp Nou. En el juego se cambia mucho pero en el campo es diferente. No se si jugará Raúl, es un gran jugador. Desconozco lo que pasará por su cabeza cuando se entere que no le puse”, comentó Benzema a los medios de comunicación.

Por su parte, también hizo una observación sobre su falta de gol en el videojuego.

“Espero que poder marcar al Barcelona, pero lo importante es que el equipo gane el partido. Mientras que ganemos da igual quien marque”, dijo.

Sin duda algo que se vuelve cada vez más popular es que fubolistas e incluso los medios de comunicación usen los videojuegos como una forma entretenida de simular los partidos importantes que se llevarán a cabo en la vida real (curiosidad, innovación, o nada mejor que hacer?), mostrando la importancia cada vez más notorias de esta industria, que se hace cada vez más presente en las calles por medio de anuncios (incluso espectaculares), en televisión con comerciales y obviamente en internet.

Pues a ver qué tal resulta ser el partido de la vida real este domingo, en el Camp Nou. Es un partido muy esperado, pues será la primera vez que midan fuerzas los dos equipos reforzados con sus estrellas: Cristiano Ronaldo y Karim Benzema con el Madrid, e Ibrahimovic con el Barcelona, además del ingrediente especial que siempre representa Messi.

Que gane el más fuerte (bueno, mejor el Madrid, no? jaja).

No lo digo por diferencia de calidad, que conste, sino por los contrastes que nos ofrece el partido del domingo: un equipo que disfruta con el balón ante otro incapaz de usarlo; un equipo de bajitos contra otro cuya fortaleza física es envidiable; la pegada del Madrid contra el escondite del Barça; la cantera contra la cartera. Y así podríamos seguir.

Lo que tiene el fútbol no lo tiene ningún otro deporte. Tras el partido ante el Inter hablábamos del contraste entre el Inter liguero y el europeo. Tras el del Madrid, podemos hablar de lo poco que la ventaja anímica de llegar líder al Nou Camp le ha durado a los blancos. Después del partido ante el Racing -o más bien después del pinchazo del Barça-, la sensación de que algo grande estaba cerca era palpable. Tras la pesadilla de ayer, la mente viaja de mejor gana a una goleada local que a una machada visitante. Cosas del fútbol. En 48 horas se viaja de un extremo al opuesto sin que tan siquiera sea necesario perder un partido.

Al iniciar la temporada escribíamos por aquí comparando a Iniesta y a Kaká. Nos preguntábamos quién era mejor y cuál aportaría más cosas al juego y a la Liga. Esa pregunta ha quedado totalmente satisfecha. No así la comparativa entre Leo y Cristiano. Ahí creo que incluso el merengue sale vencedor. Cada vez que a Messi lo han desconectado de Xavi e Iniesta, hemos leído sobre su incapacidad. Como si Messi fuera malo. No, lo que ocurre es que los peloteros salidos de la Masía provocan una mejora exponencial en sus compañeros, comparable e incluso puede que superior a la del mago Michael Laudrup (artículo a la vista) en sus mejores noches.

Se enfrentan Piqué y Pepe, dos de los mejores centrales de la Liga, si no los mejores, en el contraste defensivo. Mientras uno es un genio a la hora de dar salida al balón -sin menospreciar sus artes defensivas, dios me libre- y mantener el caudal de juego cuando el rival tapa los espacios a los pequeños, el otro es el mejor desconectando a los delanteros rivales. Pepe no tiene parangón a la hora de defender. Su capacidad de anticipación y su velocidad y potencia lo convierten en una pesadilla para cualquier delantero. Hasta ahí existe un contraste. Pepe sufre más contra delanteros altos que defendiendo a los más hábiles. Ibrahimovic lo tiene todo, por lo que veremos un enfrentamiento en el que pueden saltar chispas.

Y qué decir de la portería. El santo blanco, ídolo de masas y capitán de la Selección Española, tendrá enfrente a Valdés, uno de esos buenos porteros a los que muchas veces se cuestiona porque sí. Tiene condiciones, pero no cae bien y de vez en cuando comete una pifia de las buenas. Casillas también, solo que su flor a veces permite que no terminen en gol.  Y como cae bien hasta en Barcelona, cuando la que lía es parda parece no ser de recibo levantar la voz.

En el banquillo, más de lo mismo. Un tipo con las ideas meridianamente claras -Guardiola-, ante otro cuyas contínuas pruebas están hartando a más de uno.

Todos los años escuchamos aquello de que los clásicos son partidos diferentes. Este año hay motivos de sobra para afirmar que estamos ante el más diferente de los últimos años…

Pues aquí que estaba en la página web del Marca leyendo algunas noticias, y como siempre me quedo asombrado de como manipulan las declaraciones de todo aquel equipo contrario al Real Madrid.  Me centro en las manifestaciones que hizo el entranador del FC Barcelona, Josep Guardiola. En la rueda de presa dijo literalmente “El Madrid se ha gastado 270 millones, como para no intentar ser líder”. Y los de la gran M roja lo ponen de la siguiente manera “¿El Real Madrid líder?, claro se ha gastado 270 millones”. Igualito por los cojones.

Esta gente escribe lo que le da la gana para crear polémica y hasta el mas tonto sabe que, cuando pones algo entre comillas es porque ha sido la manera literal en la que se ha expresado una tercera persona. Estos periodistas deberían de enviar su Curriculum a “DEC” o “Sálvame” porque es el sitio que les corresponden junto a Karmele, Mariñas y “la voz del pueblo”.

“Sorry old boy, washing my hair that night”. Am I talking here about Fiorentina’s fans not being bothered to travel to Anfield for a meaningless game with Liverpool but saving their cash for a more cheerful Christmas? No, not really.

What a difference two months can make. When UEFA Champions League group stage caravan was ready to go, at the end of september, there were inevitable mass-media comments based on false assumptions that the “predictability of outcomes” and “the same sense of inertia enveloping the bloated early rounds” will generate a lack of interest and subsequently empty seats around the grounds, “as there is no obvious reason to desert the shampoo anywhere on the continent” in these autumn evenings apart from some big old clashes such as Juventus – Bayern, AC Milan – Real Madrid or Barcelona – Inter. I’ve cited from an oppinion going on the lines of Michel Platini’s alleged misjudgement to mix Europe’s finest, the cream of the elite, with some no-hopers.

Never mind the sarcasm which peppered the comment, “You can imagine the look on Jose Mourinho’s face when Inter were drawn in the same group as Rubin Kazan”, but some might argue that the chance itself for lesser clubs to face giants of the game is a step up on the ladder. The minnows can improve only by playing against the best in the trade.

And others might not be so imaginative yet they’ve noticed Pep Guardiola’s face when the current UEFA Champions League holders were defeated on Camp Nou by Gokdeniz Karadeniz 73rd minute strike. It was 2-1 for Rubin in Barcelona. Actually, not that much of a shock, after a 0-0 draw in Kazan, when the Russian champion was already sprinting towards back to back domestic titles.

It’s well documented the fact that Russian clubs take advantage on their day from the unusual spring-autumn format of the season. Only on this basis and the champions of the EURO 2008 semifinalist shouldn’t have been taken for granted. Not to mention their clubs resurgence in UEFA Cup, which was won by CSKA Moscow and Zenit Sankt Petersburg in 2005 and 2008 respectivelly. That’s a harvest double the amount of England’s, triumphant in UEFA Cup in the last 25 years only through Liverpool, in 2001, but this record can be adjusted in may, in Hamburg, with The Reds derailed from glamorous  UEFA Champions League to its poorer renamed cousin, UEFA Europa League. 

The shampoo will be deserted on wednesday the 9th of december in favour of a journey to San Siro for an exciting Inter – Rubin Kazan decider, with Jose Mourinho’s men and Karadeniz et co equal on points. What can you ask for more? Goliath hosting David and not the other way round, another inconvenience for Europe’s finest, through the eyes of western commentators, to have to pull their alike extraterestrial buses in some “Eastern European backwater”. Although there are human beings living and buying football tickets even there, apparently it seems a stage not glitzy enough for the uber-entities.

It was often the case – and a repeat scenario won’t be any surprise - that the bigger clubs prevailed despite a stuttering start or a poor form altogether in the group stage. The smart money will be on Jose Mourinho’s coat and hairstyle to be admired on the glamorous stage as well in spring but it has to be pointed out that no team is by any means qualified yet from this supposedly inbalanced group. And that says a lot about minnows’ progress. A 2-2 draw as Inter made in Milano against Dinamo Kiyv will do though for the Italian champions.   

 And who would have imagined that Fiorentina Firenze will go through the group stage for the first time in its history at the expense of a seasoned Liverpool side? Or who would have thought that unknown Unirea Urziceni will shatter Glasgow Rangers on Ibrox Park with a 4-1 which contributed to the elimination of Scotland’s champions before the last group games were played?

These are some questions to ponder about. The shampoo will be in use in Glasgow when Gers will travel to Seville for an academic outing against the top of the group Andalucians. Full credit to Dan Petrescu, once a versatile player not only for Chelsea, now a capable manager providing an answer in his own way to another ironic arrow targeting Michel Platini. The commentator was asking if the name of Urziceni is the acceptable contraction…

Well, it’s just a name and nothing else, no better or worse than Stuttgart. Urzica is a plant, a stinging nettle, and has therapeutic values. While Platini’s ideals, to evolve the game on the virtues of solidarity and universality, mentioned when he took helm of UEFA in january 2007, seem already to bear fruit. Or may be some observers discomfort is coming from the president’s suggestion that 4 representatives for England or Spain might be a bit too much and that indebted clubs might end one day thrown out of the competition.

Some might say that I’m very harsh and punitive on some wrong predictions. But I’ll argue that it’s not about some wild results that unexpectedly occured, say AC Milan – Zurich 0-1, Atletico Madrid – Apoel Nicosia 0-0, Bayern Munich – Bordeaux 0-2 or even Manchester United – CSKA Moscow 3-3, given that just an owngoal in the 93rd minute have undone the 2005 UEFA Cup winners at Old Trafford, where Besiktas has won as well, but it’s about the concept of rightly mixing in the group stage the mighty and powerful with some new faces.

Enough knock-out stages will then follow for the big clubs to grace the loftier stratospheres of the competition. But as New Zealand, Honduras or North Korea sneaked through in the group stages of 2010 World Cup final, so UEFA Champions League can do with a few underdogs. No harm but – as it was proved – some excitement.

And isn’t it ironic that it went full circle, if it is to quote again the commentary: “[...] another fixture to get hearts pumping; Unirea Urziceni, of Romania, versus, VFB Stuttgart”. You bet it is. Nothing else than a win will do for Die Schwaben to go through. And by the way, the club’s name is correctly spelled with f and not F. Verein fur Bewegungsspiele Stuttgart 1893 e.V.

Some minnows proved that Platini’s competition format has its merits and it’s just fair to point out that a former European champion both at club and national level, with Juventus Torino and France, who won as well both domestic competitions in Italy and his native country, winning Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Supercup and Intercontinental Cup among other trophees, might be more of a visionary with the game’s best interests at heart than some pundits can imagine.

Will Jose Mourinho succeed against Rubin? Or will he find the going as tough as Rafael Benitez did with Liverpool?

While being here and casting an eye on the backwater of Eastern Europe, just one more point to make. It’s surprising to say and admit that for all their travel, some football writers must lack some geography knowledge.  Why I’m saying this? The same error is repeated for decades, mistakingly including footballing nations as say Czech Republic or Hungary, you name them, in… Eastern Europe.

Well, it’s a well known fact even at kindergarten in mainland Europe that the continent’s eastern border consists of Ural Mountains, at meridian 60 E, which splits the Russian Federation into two: the European Russia and the Asian Russia. Take any map and you’ll notice that European Russian Federation is extremely wide, occupying the whole eastern front of the continent. That’s Eastern Europe…

Which leaves the lot, Czech Republic et all, nowhere else but in Central Europe. The meridians are giving an even more accurate view of what’s what in terms of positioning on our continent’s map, be it a footballing one or not. The 60 degrees E meridian is roughly where Urals are stretching from north to south, while the 30 degrees E meridian cuts across eastern Finland, Belarus and Ukraine. Meridian O passes Greenwich.

So how comes that Slavia or Sparta Prague, bang on the western side of 15 degrees E meridian, so much closer to London than to Moscow, are… eastern European clubs? It defies everything: maps, geography, logic, truth…

To emphasise the aforementioned point about the imbalance of power in the elitist Champions League, the columnist choose poor Unirea Urziceni as a perfect “example”, comparing David with mighty Real Madrid. Well, geographically wise, the same error… Urziceni, the town surprisingly holding the current domestic national title in Romania, even being in eastern Romania, is actually bang in central Europe, whichever way you want to study the map of real Europe, known at kindergarten. Somewhere at mid distance between the western points of say Ireland and Portugal and the Urals.

Unirea Urziceni, this unknown quantity with an unpronouncable name, was deemed as an unworthy opponent for the big and powerful, with the stroke of a keyboard. It took decades for minor Romanian outfits to break the horrendous state controlled hijacking of national football, with Steaua and Dinamo the big bullies on the scene. CFR Cluj made history last year by winning the title, despite all the machinations of Steaua. Cluj-Napoca, a provincial city from Transylvania, have defied the structures of power.

Unirea Urziceni followed the trend and, from nowhere, finished on top, due to Dan Petrescu’s managerial knowhow. His skills honed in Poland, at Wisla Krakow, the former Sheffield Wednesday and Chelsea London full back hit the jackpot by bringing the title in a place the size of Slough. Actually, I’m exaggerating, as Slough is quite big.

Instead of recognizing the amazing shift of power in Romanian football, where it seems that truth starts to prevail and Steaua and Dinamo find it harder and harder to control through corruption, sleaze and influence, some are questioning, placing in imaginary boxes and taking the mickey out of the newborn stars. And I say stars but they might be only comets, shining just for a while. It’s their moment, so why to pick them as “examples” in this infinite talk about the Champions League format moulded by Platini!? Because it’s convenient for some…

The simple truth is that Urziceni is not in eastern Europe, whateversome Western Europeans want to believe, and that Unirea did a wonderful job in following the footsteps of another minnow, CFR Cluj Napoca. A few more like them and we’ll escape the plague of associating Romanian football with the names of Steaua and Dinamo. 

I just assume that if Steaua would have won the title and represent Romania in Champions League, it wouldn’t have been picked as an “example” in the explanation about the imbalance of power in the group stages of the European elite.  Just because Steaua won the old European Cup in ‘86 with players cherrypicked from various minnows, some are assuming that it must be a powerful enough entity to be worthy of a home and away double with Real Madrid. Well, Olympique Lyonnais visited Bucharest recently and showed the real difference in power.

And if one day Steaua will pay even without interest the unpaid transfer sums for players… recruited in those days in the Army, then the mighty and powerful of the Iron Curtain block will be bankrupt and buried, while the “minnows” derided now will empower themselves at least for the merit of bringing talents to the footballing world.

And please don’t show to anybody at Steaua or Dinamo the UEFA Champions League group table with Urziceni in second place, with 8 points. Spare them of blushing for the 5 points gathered all together, with 3 goals scored and 12 conceded, in the eight games played in UEFA Europa League groups, scratching the bottom…

Prazer, eu sou um dos melhores jogadores do Barcelona na atual temporada. Eu soube me aproveitar das lesões Ibrahimovic, Henry e Messi para firmar no ataque do time campeão europeu. É claro que ainda não sou titular, mas tenho feito bons jogos e posso sonhar com essa posição no futuro.

Uma dessas partidas de destaque aconteceu nesta terça-feira. Posicionado pelo lado esquerdo do ataque, enfrentei um dos melhores laterais-direitos do mundo, o brasileiro Maicon. Resultado: marquei um gol, dei trabalho e meu time venceu a Inter de Milão por 2 a 0.Outro bom jogo aconteceu na decisão da Supercopa da Europa. Eu entrei no lugar do Ibrahimovic e, já na prorrogação, fiz o gol que decidiu o título para o meu time.

Eu comecei a jogar futebol nas categorias de base do San Isidro. De lá, fui para os juvenis do Barça em agosto de 2004. Passei três anos sem grande destaque, mas tive um bons momentos pelo Barcelona B em 2007. No ano seguinte, o Guardiola começou a me chamar para jogar no time profissional com certa frequência. Não cheguei a brilhar, mas mostrei que podia ser útil.

Em 2009, Málaga, Sporting, Zaragoza, Racing, Tenerife, Olympiakos e Wigan tentaram me contratar ou acertar um empréstimo, mas fiquei onde estava e finalmente comecei a evoluir. Sou ambidestro, costumo jogar pelos dois lados do ataque, sei finalizar bem e posso me tornar uma eficiente arma do Barcelona.

Palabras extrañas, y posiblemente basadas en el chollo, del entrenador español más exitoso del último lustro, con permiso de Luis Aragonés. Pep Guardiola fue un futbolista increíble, aunque planeara sobre él la sombra del dopaje (sombra que nunca ha llegado a difuminarse aunque en España prefiramos quedarnos con su etapa de jugador dentro de las fronteras ibéricas). Y como entrenador, ha dado siempre un recital de educación, corrección, flema, saber estar, mano izquierda, llamadlo como

No te pongas nervioso, hombre. Piensa en el triplete.

queráis. Pero peca de dos cosas: una, suficiencia, y la otra, forofismo interino.

La suficiencia intenta esconderla siempre bajo la falsa modestia. Hace un mes, antes de jugar contra el Rubin Kazan ruso, un periodista le preguntó si sabía el nombre del entrenador del equipo, a lo que Guardiola respondió, visiblemente molesto, que esa no era una buena pregunta. Después, facilitó el nombre del entrenador con resignación, y pasó a otra pregunta. No debería enfadarle a Pep que los periodistas quieran comprobar si de verdad es tan estudioso del fútbol y si de verdad respeta tanto a todos los rivales como dice hacer. El caso es que al final, el Barcelona sacó 1 punto de 6 posiblesen el doble enfrentamiento ante el Rubin Kazan, y aunque Guardiola valoró positivamente la experiencia, su discurso precavido se vio reforzado. En efecto, no hay rival pequeño.

En cuanto al forofismo interino, que trae de serie por ser un producto de la cantera culé y por haber mamado barcelonismo y “catalanidad” hasta la extenuación, reventó ayer una de las costuras de su bien tejido traje de prudencia. Tras el encuentro ante el Inter de Milán, en el que el Barcelona se jugaba gran parte de las opciones de estar en la siguiente ronda, y que terminó con victoria blaugrana por 2-0 sobre el líder del Calcio, Guardiola se salió por la tangente entrando a valorar el actual liderato del Real Madrid en Liga, restándole mérito por venir precedido de tan inmenso gasto económico. El forofismo tiene una fisura, y es que ciega. Y Guardiola está ciego si cree que los 270 millones de gasto de Florentino son la causa de que su equipo empatara contra el Osasuna o el Athletic, por ejemplo. Porque si algo está claro, es que el Real Madrid es líder más por demérito culé que por méritos propios.

Sólo espero que esta semana del Barça no sea frusciante: debería ganar los dos partidos, para hacer justicia poética y para que la trayectoria de Guardiola siguiese siendo impecable. Pero debería servirle de aviso: la plantilla es corta, no maneja alternativas a su juego tradicional, está perdiendo efectividad, le falta la ambición del año pasado para acabar los partidos goleando (cuando este año intenta manejar los resultados y congelar los partidos)… Ah, y esperemos que Valdés no haga de las suyas… (los goles encajados de este año, han sido por “méritos suyos”…

PD: Si el Inter va líder del grupo, y el Real Madrid de la Liga,es que igual el Barça no ha hecho tan bien las cosas como pensábamos…

Messi, durante el partido ante el Athletic

Buenas noticias para Pep Guardiola. Las pruebas médicas han confirmado que la lesión de Leo Messi no están grave como se pensaba en un primer momento. Según el parte médico facilitado por el Barça, Messi sufre una lesión de grado 1 en el aductor de la pierna izquierda tras realizarle una resonancia magnética, por lo que no está descartado para jugar el próximo martes ante el Inter y sigue siendo duda ante el Real Madrid.

Según evolucione la lesión, el cuerpo técnico decidirá sobre la participación de Messi en los próximos partidos aunque las posibilidades de jugar el martes son mínimas.

Los servicios médicos del Barcelona apuntaron además que Ibrahimovic, después de someterse a una ecografía, presenta signos de mejora en la lesión en los isquiotibiales del muslo izquierdo y no se descarta para jugar frente al Inter de Milán.

Por su parte, el marfileño Touré Yayá está prácticamente descartado para dicho compromiso debido a su malestar general que tiene por la Gripe A. Además, esta tarde se confirmarán los resultados de las pruebas realizadas al mexicano Rafa Márquez que se cayó a última hora de la convocatoria frente al Athletic de Bilbao por una posible Gripe A.

Entrenamiento de recuperación con seis ausencias
El entrenamiento del equipo de este domingo volvió a ser como en las jornadas de partidos de selecciones, ya que Guardiola no pudo dirigir una sesión con la totalidad de sus jugadores, debido a que seis de ellos causaron baja.

Además de las bajas de Messi, Ibrahimovic, Abidal y Touré, Gerard Piqué se ejercitó en el gimnasio y el mexicano Rafael Márquez sigue ‘de baja’, con proceso gripal, aunque el Barcelona aún no ha informado si el central ha contraído la gripe nueva.

Al margen de estas seis ausencias (Messi, Ibrahimovic, Márquez, Piqué, Abidal y Touré), Guardiola pudo trabajar con el resto de jugadores, aunque los que jugaron ante el Athletic lo hicieron en un tono más suave. Para completar el grupo de trabajo, los jugadores del filial Fontàs, Jonathan dos Santos y el portero Oier Olazábal también han estado en la ciudad deportiva de Sant Joan Despí.

Nou Hero at the Nou Camp

In the dying moments of Barcelona’s Champions League triumph in May, coach Pep Guardiola made a substitution to run down the clock. Andreas Iniesta was the player sacrificed. The diminutive midfielder produced a stirring display on the night, along with partner in crime Xavi. Both tormented the Manchester United midfielder to such an extent, Darren Fletcher was almost missed. His replacement was yet another graduate from the Catalan’s outstanding academy, Perdito. It was a surprising choice, as the young forward only appeared in sporadically during their historic treble-winning season. However, one third of the way through the 2009/2010 campaign, he is 2nd in the Barca scoring-charts, just behind a certain Lionel Messi. This season, he has grown into Pedro.

Yet another product of La Masia, Pedro Rodriguez Ledesma’s 2-minute cameo in Rome looked for all the world like Guardiola was giving one of his old mates from his days as Barcelona B’s coach a run-out. After all, Pedro had been a major influence in the B team’s promotion to the Division 2B in the 2007/08 season. This was most certainly a factor in Pep getting the job as Barcelona’s first-team coach, as much as the fact he is a former Barca captain. So this was a way of saying thank you to the versatile attacker. However, this is not how Guardiola’s mind works.

Pep: Single-minded

The former Spanish international is not afraid to make big decisions. Within a few weeks of taking the job, he made it very clear that Samuel Eto’o was not part of his plans. The lack of a concrete offer for the striker meant Barca were stuck with him for another season. A season where the Cameroonian notched 36 goals, but that was not enough to convince Pep to keep him at the Nou Camp. Zlatan Ibrahimovic was in his sights, and Eto’o was merely a makeweight in that particular deal. Huge names like Ronaldino and Deco were sold off within weeks of Pep’s appointment arrival.

Puyol: Captain

Carlos Puyol is an iconic figure at the club. A huge presence within Catalonia, he is club captain of his beloved Barcelona. But he was left to sweat on a new contract, which was due to run out next summer. It was almost unimaginable to see Puyol leave the club. Although prone to errors and lapses in concentration, Puyol’s strength and desire are valuable assets that someway atone for the other shortcomings in his game. Guardiola noted this and after realising Puyol’s value to the squad and versatility, the 31-year-old was offered a new contract running until 2013. Which means he will probably finish his career at the Nou Camp, making him a 1-club-man. A rarity in the modern game.

Often loyalty was Guardiola’s predecessor Frank Rijkaard’s undoing. He persisted with players that were patently not good enough to wear the shirt. Oleguer Presas is one such individual. A highly political footballer, with extreme left-wing views on a wide range of subjects. They range from Catalonia’s independence to the legal and justice system within Spain. But aside from this, he was an extremely average footballer. A weak-link in what was between 2004 through 2006, an exceptional Barcelona side.

Rijkaard indulgence of stars like Ronaldino and Deco was apparent through his time as manager. These 2 playmakers played their best football under the Dutchman’s guidance, but when their star began to wane, Rijkaard failed to make the big decisions and move them on. A weak defence of their Champions League title in 2007 should have been an indication that changes needed to be made.  He was either unwilling, or unable to do so.

So Pedro is in this team on merit alone. If he was not doing the business, he would not be in the side. Last night, the versatile attacker played the full 90 minutes in Barca’s 1-1 draw at Athletio Bilbao. Former next-big thing Bojan was introduced as a substitute, with the ever-popular Thierry Henry playing the final 6 minutes.

It is hard to pin-point his main strengths. He does not possess the lightening pace of Eto’o, Messi’s exquisite dribbling ability, or Ibrahimovic’s strength. One could even argue that Bojan would be considered to be a superior finisher. It’s just a combination of a number of things that have made him a big presence in a squad of superstars. Despite his small frame, Pedro uses his technique, touch and low centre of gravity to find space in and around the penalty area.

Outside the club, Pedro has not even been a regular in Spain’s international teams through the age-groups. With just 2 U-21 caps to his name, it seems like he has slipped under the radar in that respect. However, in a World Cup year, anything could happen. Should he continue his excellent start to the season, perhaps Vicente Del Bosque could sneak Perdo on the plane to South Africa. He could fit him comfortably in one of the overhead compartments. Stranger things have happened.

Quite unique about his 9 goals this term, they have been spread over 5 competitions. La Liga, Copa Del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, Champions League and European Super Cup. His coolly-taken winner on a night when even Messi seemed to lose his head was just a hint of what was to come over the following months. A stunning winner against Almeria in October was the winger’s debut La Liga goal, and gave Barca a vital 3 points. In December, the World Club Championships shall be played in Japan, giving Pedro the chance to net in 6 different competitions.

As Barcelona’s season now enters a pivotal week, with games against Inter Milan and Real Madrid, it will be interesting to see how much we see of Pedro in these games. He is equally effective whether he is starting, or used from the bench. Should Pedro make any impact in the week to come, perhaps people will begin to take note.And the 22-year will have repaid some of Guardiola’s faith in him.

Robinho au Barça. Le feuilleton dure depuis l’été. Tout d’abord, une alternative aux recrutements « avortés » de Ribéry et de Juan Mata, le brésilien apparait maintenant comme la principale cible stratégique du club. Mais cette très probable ( à l’heure actuelle) arrivée de Robinho au mercato d’hiver déchainent les débats dans l’entourage sportif et médiatique du Barça.

Depuis le départ de Robinho du Real Madrid dans les conditions que tout le monde connaît, le brésilien a toujours été lié au Barça d’abord anecdotiquement en le plaçant comme un des joueurs de la liste du futur candidat à la présidence Sandro Rosell avant qu’après les échecs des recrutements de Ribéry et du valencian Mata, le club se tourne définitivement vers Robinho et en fasse une des priorités de son recrutement, un peu tard dans le mercato d’été mais bien placé pour arriver en hiver. Ce n’est pas un secret que Robinho ne se plait plus à Manchester City malgré que le club anglais a créé une des équipes les plus compétitives de Premier League. Le brésilien en effet entretient des relations conflictuelles avec Mark Hughes, ce dernier ne sachant pas exploiter au maximum le talent du joueur. Robinho sait que pour être considéré comme l’un des meilleurs joueurs du monde, rien de mieux que de jouer dans la meilleure équipe du monde. Son départ à City a été un vrai recul dans sa carrière et il en est conscient.

Les questions qui se posent dans l’entourage du Barça sont qu’apporterait sportivement Robinho à l’équipe, est-il nécessaire au club et si le joueur ne serait pas problématique dans le vestiaire du Barça.

Sportivement, Robinho apporterait surtout déséquilibre , vitesse, encore plus d’associativité et de profondeur sur le coté gauche. Mais en dehors de ses qualités techniques, le brésilien libérerait quelque peu Messi de l’attention défensive accrue que lui prête les équipes adverses mais aussi les probables absences et baisse de forme du prodige argentin se ressentirait moins sur le rendement offensif de l’équipe, non pas que Robinho possède autant d’influence sur le jeu que Leo, mais son football, sa capacité de déséquilibre, de but et de changement de rythme compensent en quelque sorte. De plus, il est tout simplement évident qu’avec Robinho, le Barça posséderait enfin un coté gauche performant offensivement et que penser d’une attaque composée de Messi, Ibra, Iniesta et Robinho. Le talent de cette ligne d’attaque est tellement immense qu’à l’image de l’arrivée d’Ibra au Barça, celle de Robinho donnerait encore une autre dimension et de nouvelles possibilités que certainement Guardiola a certainement valorisé.

Justement, Guardiola est un des défenseurs de l’arrivée du brésilien, se rendant compte que son effectif possède quelques lacunes notamment en terme de profondeur d’effectif sur la ligne d’attaque. Mais Pep nécessite d’évacuer tous les doutes sur Robinho et lui propose ce challenge : venir au Barça en prêt pour 6 mois pour prouver tout son talent avant de signer définitivement dans le club. Guardiola veut profiter de la motivation du joueur pour aller en coupe du monde mais pas en prenant tous les risques. Pas certain que ni le joueur ni City ne soient d’accord pour ces conditions. Robinho serait un facteur important pour maintenir Messi au maximum de son engagement et activation mentale. L’arrivée d’un joueur des mêmes caractéristiques maintiendrait une certaine compétition au sein de l’équipe. Et ce n’est pas un aspect à négliger surtout dans une saison où certains joueurs pourraient se sentir dans un certain confort après les grandes réussites de l’an dernier. En ce qui concerne les problèmes comportementaux du brésilien et depuis l’affaire Ronaldinho ( souvenir encore récent ), la presse, le club et les supporters sont extrêmement sensibles à ce sujet, le caractère festif du brésilien n’étant secret pour personne. Il semblerait que sur ce point là, Robinho se serait calmé depuis la naissance de son enfant.

L’arrivée de Robinho au Barça semble réelle et il s’agirait là d’un coup magistral autant sur le plan sportif que médiatique. Guardiola doit cependant bien intégrer le joueur dans le groupe et dans le climat médiatique du club, chose dont on ne peut pas douter pour une personne qui maitrise aussi bien les rouages de l’entourage du club catalan. En tout cas, le numéro 7 parait déjà être attribué depuis le début de saison à Can Barça.

Hoy por hoy estos tres entrenadores tienen un dolor de cabeza que a estas alturas no pensaban tener. Tres entrenadores de tres grande de Europa, que todo lo que no sea clasificar para los Octavos de la Champions League sería considerado un fracaso.

El que menos complicado lo tiene es Pep Guardiola. El Barcelona no depende de nadie y ganando sus partidos estaría adentro. En este momento está tercero en su grupo y no creemos que se queden afuera, pero… Eto’o se las tiene jurada. Y el Inter visita el Camp Nou en busca de venganza. Objetivo: Guardiola y Laporta.

Ya hablamos de Rafa Benítez, y lo del Liverpool tiene fea pinta. Está tercero a 5 puntos del segundo, la Fiorentina. Lidera el OL con 10. A los Reds le queda recibir a estos dos equipos.

Van Gaal se va a tener inventar alguna que otra excusa válida para que no lo echen a patadas. A cargo del Bayern Munich, el equipo con mayor presupuesto de la Bundesliga, está haciendo el ridículo en la Champions League. Están a 4 del segundo la Juventus y a 6 del Girondins. Igualmente, y aunque lo tiene más fácil, el gran fracaso sería no ver al Real Madrid en la próxima ronda. Ni a golpe de talonario Florentino Pérez se aseguró todavía el paso a Octavos. Le queda recibir al Zurich y visitar al Marsella, quien lo podría mandar a la Europa League. Para un equipo que se arma en los despachos y no en la cantera, y que tiene como objetivo el jugar la final en su estadio, el 2012 habría llegado tres años antes. Que con el dinero vayan comprando varios bunkers.

Il Barca adesso sa cosa aspettarsi domani sera (stasera, NdT) quando affronterà il Rubin: il termometro segnava 4 gradi sotto zero quando, questa sera, i giocatori si sono allenati, con la neve che era stata rimossa che era ancora tutt’intorno al prato, in ottime condizioni anche se fatto di erba più alta della media.

Preparati al gelo

I giocatori erano ben avvolti nei loro berretti di lana, i guanti e le tute appositamente portati per far fronte alle basse temperature. Tutti e diciannove si sono allenati, compreso Dani Alves cui è stato dato il via libera dai medici appena lunedì.
In precedenza, lo staff tecnico aveva deciso di non procedere a un allenamento mattutino per consentire ai giocatori di riposarsi dopo il viaggio di lunedì, così la squadra ha trascorso la mattinata in albergo, che si trova nelle adiacenze dello stadio.
