Steven Soderbergh kręcąc “Che” poszedł z jednej strony na łatwiznę, z drugiej, podjął się wyzwania. Łatwizna polegała na lotnym temacie, tyleż kontrowersyjnym, co wciąż aktualnym w debacie publicznej. Pod tym względem “Che” Guevara był zawsze wdzięcznym obiektem dla komercyjnych przedsięwzięć – tabuny lewicowych che-lovers zawsze wiernie wydadzą pieniądze aby usiąść w jednym (kinowym) rzędzie z che-hatersami, którzy równie wiernie, nieco masochistycznie, sprawdzają kolejne wersje mitu. Druga strona medalu to właśnie fala krytyki, która ciągnie się za Ernesto Guevarą, przekładająca się na każdego kto próbuje ukazywać w korzystnym świetle kubańskiego rewolucjonistę z Argentyny.

Nie będę może pisał o swojej osobistej opinii na temat Guevary, napiszę jednak, że miałem choć trochę nadzieji, że Soderbergh spróbuje temat podjąć z nieco obiektywnej pozycji. Wszelkie wątpliwości zostały jednak rozwiane gdy dowiedziałem się (widz dowiaduje się tego pod koniec filmu), że scenariusz oparty został o “Epizody Wojny Rewolucyjnej” czyli ni mniej ni więcej na pamiętnikach samego Che. Nigga please. Kwestię obiektywizmu możemy więc odsunąć na bok – zresztą łagodność i pobłażliwość rewolucji rzuca się od razu w oczy.

Jak to wygląda więc z punktu widzenia samego obrazu, estetyki i formy? Nijak. Film nuży, jest chaotyczny, wizualnie kompletnie żaden, podobnie zresztą fabularnie. Trochę tu ideologii rewolucyjnej, trochę scen z życia partyzantów, trochę dialogów Che – Castro, ale wszystko zdaje się bezsensowne, prowadzące do nikąd. Po zakończeniu filmu ma się wrażenie pustki. Ten film to ok 2 godzin epizodycznych scenek spisanych przez samego “Che”, pokazanych w przeciętny sposób, przeplatanych fragmentami przemówień Ernesto, w których słyszymy wyświechtane slogany socjalizmu. Ani to ładne, ani to ciekawe, ani to szokujące, ani pouczające, ani prawdziwe. Pytam się więc, po co?

De wat oudere tennisliefhebber herinnert zich ongetwijfeld Guillermo Villas, voormalig winnaar op Roland Garros. Wist je trouwens dat hij ooit speciaal naar België overvloog om  samen met Maurice Engelen van Praga Khan, een singeltje op te nemen? En nu we het toch over tennis hebben. Gezonde jongemannen werden begin van de jaren 90 meer dan eens geprikkeld door de sensuele Gabriela Sabatini, toen één van de mooiste tennissters uit het circuit.

Dé bekendste Argentijn is ontegensprekelijk Ernesto Ché Guevara. Deze revolutionair groeide uit tot een waar cultfiguur. Niet het minst nadat de Cubaanse fotograaf Alberto Korda het bekende Chéportret kiekte dat later op miljoenen T-shirt stond afgebeeld. Ché vocht  achtereenvolgens in Cuba, Kongo en Bolivia tegen imperialistische regimes. (jt)

The Nobel Peace Prize 1979

“By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus. ”Small of stature, rocklike in faith, Mother Teresa of Calcutta was entrusted with the mission of proclaiming God’s thirsting love for humanity, especially for the poorest of the poor. “God still loves the world and He sends you and me to be His love and His compassion to the poor.”She was a soul filled with the light of Christ, on fire with love for Him and burning with one desire: “to quench His thirst for love and for souls.”

This luminous messenger of God’s love was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje, a city situated at the crossroads of Balkan history. The youngest of the children born to Nikola and Drane Bojaxhiu, she was baptised Gonxha Agnes, received her First Communion at the age of five and a half and was confirmed in November 1916. From the day of her First Holy Communion, a love for souls was within her. Her father’s sudden death when Gonxha was about eight years old left in the family in financial straits. Drane raised her children firmly and lovingly, greatly influencing her daughter’s character and vocation. Gonxha’s religious formation was further assisted by the vibrant Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart in which she was much involved.

At the age of eighteen, moved by a desire to become a missionary, Gonxha left her home in September 1928 to join the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Sisters of Loreto, in Ireland. There she received the name Sister Mary Teresa after St. Thérèse of Lisieux. In December, she departed for India, arriving in Calcutta on 6 January 1929. After making her First Profession of Vows in May 1931, Sister Teresa was assigned to the Loreto Entally community in Calcutta and taught at St. Mary’s School for girls. On 24 May 1937, Sister Teresa made her Final Profession of Vows, becoming, as she said, the “spouse of Jesus”for “all eternity.” From that time on she was called Mother Teresa. She continued teaching at St. Mary’s and in 1944 became the school’s principal. A person of profound prayer and deep love for her religious sisters and her students, Mother Teresa’s twenty years in Loreto were filled with profound happiness. Noted for her charity, unselfishness and courage, her capacity for hard work and a natural talent for organization, she lived out her consecration to Jesus, in the midst of her companions, with fidelity and joy.

On 10 September 1946 during the train ride from Calcutta to Darjeeling for her annual retreat, Mother Teresa received her “inspiration,” her “call within a call.” On that day, in a way she would never explain, Jesus’ thirst for love and for souls took hold of her heart and the desire to satiate His thirst became the driving force of her life. Over the course of the next weeks and months, by means of interior locutions and visions, Jesus revealed to her the desire of His heart for “victims of love” who would “radiate His love on souls.” “Come be My light,” He begged her. “I cannot go alone.” He revealed His pain at the neglect of the poor, His sorrow at their ignorance of Him and His longing for their love. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. Nearly two years of testing and discernment passed before Mother Teresa received permission to begin. On August 17, 1948, she dressed for the first time in a white, blue-bordered sari and passed through the gates of her beloved Loreto convent to enter the world of the poor.

After a short course with the Medical Mission Sisters in Patna, Mother Teresa returned to Calcutta and found temporary lodging with the Little Sisters of the Poor. On 21 December she went for the first time to the slums. She visited families, washed the sores of some children, cared for an old man lying sick on the road and nursed a woman dying of hunger and TB. She started each day in communion with Jesus in the Eucharist and then went out, rosary in her hand, to find and serve Him in “the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for.” After some months, she was joined, one by one, by her former students.

On 7 October 1950 the new congregation of the Missionaries of Charity was officially established in the Archdiocese of Calcutta. By the early 1960s, Mother Teresa began to send her Sisters to other parts of India. The Decree of Praise granted to the Congregation by Pope Paul VI in February 1965 encouraged her to open a house in Venezuela. It was soon followed by foundations in Rome and Tanzania and, eventually, on every continent. Starting in 1980 and continuing through the 1990s, Mother Teresa opened houses in almost all of the communist countries, including the former Soviet Union, Albania and Cuba.

In order to respond better to both the physical and spiritual needs of the poor, Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity Brothers in 1963, in 1976 the contemplative branch of the Sisters, in 1979 the Contemplative Brothers, and in 1984 the Missionaries of Charity Fathers.Yet her inspiration was not limited to those with religious vocations. She formed the Co-Workers of Mother Teresa and the Sick and Suffering Co-Workers, people of many faiths and nationalities with whom she shared her spirit of prayer, simplicity, sacrifice and her apostolate of humble works of love. This spirit later inspired the Lay Missionaries of Charity. In answer to the requests of many priests, in 1981 Mother Teresa also began the Corpus Christi Movement for Priests as a “little way of holiness” for those who desire to share in her charism and spirit.

During the years of rapid growth the world began to turn its eyes towards Mother Teresa and the work she had started. Numerous awards, beginning with the Indian Padmashri Award in 1962 and notably the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979, honoured her work, while an increasingly interested media began to follow her activities. She received both prizes and attention “for the glory of God and in the name of the poor.”

The whole of Mother Teresa’s life and labour bore witness to the joy of loving, the greatness and dignity of every human person, the value of little things done faithfully and with love, and the surpassing worth of friendship with God. But there was another heroic side of this great woman that was revealed only after her death. Hidden from all eyes, hidden even from those closest to her, was her interior life marked by an experience of a deep, painful and abiding feeling of being separated from God, even rejected by Him, along with an ever-increasing longing for His love. She called her inner experience, “the darkness.” The “painful night” of her soul, which began around the time she started her work for the poor and continued to the end of her life, led Mother Teresa to an ever more profound union with God. Through the darkness she mystically participated in the thirst of Jesus, in His painful and burning longing for love, and she shared in the interior desolation of the poor.

During the last years of her life, despite increasingly severe health problems, Mother Teresa continued to govern her Society and respond to the needs of the poor and the Church. By 1997, Mother Teresa’s Sisters numbered nearly 4,000 members and were established in 610 foundations in 123 countries of the world. In March 1997 she blessed her newly-elected successor as Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity and then made one more trip abroad. After meeting Pope John Paul II for the last time, she returned to Calcutta and spent her final weeks receiving visitors and instructing her Sisters. On 5 September Mother Teresa’s earthly life came to an end. She was given the honour of a state funeral by the Government of India and her body was buried in the Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity. Her tomb quickly became a place of pilgrimage and prayer for people of all faiths, rich and poor alike. Mother Teresa left a testament of unshakable faith, invincible hope and extraordinary charity. Her response to Jesus’ plea, “Come be My light,” made her a Missionary of Charity, a “mother to the poor,” a symbol of compassion to the world, and a living witness to the thirsting love of God.

Less than two years after her death, in view of Mother Teresa’s widespread reputation of holiness and the favours being reported, Pope John Paul II permitted the opening of her Cause of Canonization. On 20 December 2002 he approved the decrees of her heroic virtues and miracles.

Certains affirment même que la plupart des révolutions qui ont été inspirées par l’oeuvre du Che n’ont fait que renforcer la répression et l’apparition de dictatures militaires en Amérique latine.

Même le petit-fils du Che a préféré quitter Cuba, en raison de son opposition au régime actuel qu’il qualifie de capitalisme d’État, et, bien que se reconnaissant guévariste, il affirme que son grand-père a commis de nombreuses erreurs et qu’il n’aurait jamais dû apporter son soutien à une révolution qui se transformait sous ses yeux en dictature.

Tras un tiempo callado por falta de medios que no por miedo, aunque alguien así lo interprete, quiero romper mi silencio. Hay muchas cosas que no me gustan en el mundo y aunque no siempre es fácil asumir un origen común a todas ellas y mucho menos dilucidar las, a menudo, múltiples causas de un mismo proceso; esta vez creo que puedo decir, sin miedo a equivocarme, que si el mundo está mal es culpa nuestra.

Viendo el ejemplo de otros tiempos, aprendemos que lo que diferencia una revuelta de una revolución son los fines que la motivan. A lo largo de la historia cuando el vulgo, los no-poderosos, encontraban insoportable su situación, se levantaban contra los poderosos manifestando su descontento. Si ello no tenía un sentido claro, se convertía en una revuelta que, convenientemente reprimida, retomaba el statu quo anterior. Ahora bien, si existía cierta organización en la muchedumbre soliviantada, unos objetivos concretos, un método para alcanzarlos y cierta legitimidad en el nuevo sistema; entonces, en ese momento, la plebe descontenta se convierte en marea revolucionaria, se establecen nuevas concepciones del poder, nuevas formas de entender e interpretar la realidad política, económica y social; un nuevo mundo en definitiva, ni mejor ni peor, pero siempre distinto, siempre dinámico, siempre dotado de esa capacidad de reinventarse a sí mismo.

Ese viejo espíritu revolucionario, esa necesidad imperiosa de ir más allá; de cambiar el mundo, de mejorarlo, de buscar un nuevo porvenir para nosotros y para los que nos heredarán, es, a mi entender, lo que elevaba los ojos de Galileo al cielo nocturno; lo que llevó a Leonardo a intentar comprender la realidad inventando. La poderosa llamada de la innovación que excitaba la imaginación de los estudiantes franceses en el 68, también obligó a ese eterno guerrillero a retomar su fusil en Bolivia, a miles de mujeres en todo el mundo a demostrar que llevaban aquí tanto tiempo como nosotros. Fueron todos ellos y  otros muchos los llamados a cambiar el mundo.

Gandhi, Mandela, Luther King tienen en común con otros muchos nombres y anónimos de la Historia el volcar todos sus esfuerzos, la vida en ocasiones, en revolucionar a la humanidad y llenarla de esperanza, de confianza en el cambio, de nuevas ideas y del anhelo de un futuro mejor. La efervescencia de aquellas mentes fue responsable de un dinamismo capaz de convertirnos en lo que hoy somos.

Ya no hay nadie capaz de ponerse ante una hilera de tanques y darles el alto.

Hoy miro a mi alrededor y no encuentro sino ecos de estas voces revolucionarias que en otro tiempo agitaban las conciencias de la humanidad, hoy miro a mi alrededor y veo como una sociedad dotada de más medios que ninguna otra antes para organizarse en su búsqueda de la justicia, para sentir y desear un nuevo mundo, para hacer oír su voz a través del tiempo, reniega de su responsabilidad en lo que seremos el día de mañana. Más bien acalla su conciencia con excusas, culpa al sistema olvidando que ella mísma es el sistema.

Estoy harto de oír hablar de reciclar, reducir y reutilizar; estoy harto de ver como el ánimo de luchar contra lo que no debe ser desaparece autoengañándonos con tres bolsas de colores. Aquel que quiera salvar el mundo que se preocupe, en la calle, entre la gente, de que Kioto sea una obligación y no una declaración de intenciones, que se levante contra el control oligárquico que se ejerce sobre los gobiernos; que haga en definitiva que los gobernantes le teman a él. Y también a ella, porque no está sola; cuenta con el ánimo y el ímpetu de toda una marabunta de voces que rugen su derecho y su obligación de decidir sobre si mismos.

Aquel que quiera cambiar el mundo que no se vanaglorie de su libertad de votar y escoger, que no elegir, a sus líderes; sino que haga que éstos tengan siempre presente que su obligación es el servicio al bien común, que no olviden ni por un instante que los errores se pagan.

Los demás, los que no queráis cambiar el mundo, reconfortad vuestra conciencia con vuestras tres erres y olvidad esta cuarta, ocupad vuestras bocas con libertades que no defienden vuestras manos, llenad vuestros corazones de democracia que no late en vuestra sociedad y conformaos con vuestras excusas, que al final, no son más que eso, excusas.

Excusas para eludir vuestra responsabilidad con vosotros mismos.

I have just departed Barnes and Noble, as I am absurdly early for work due to my lack of transportation. I feel guilty killing so much time inside there; it’s not a library, and when I sit down to read it’s the closest thing to shoplifting I’ve ever done, as was expressed by Randall Munroe in his comic here.

While purusing the aisles I happened across the biography section, full of wonderous characters. On this shelf, inbetween two Fidel hardbacks stood the graphic biography of Che Guevara. Fully adorned with true Marvel comics fashion images and graphically gross material, I would, upon flipping through the pages, expect it in the same section one would find The Punisher.

At first I didn’t know how to comprehend it. Would it do history justice to produce Comic Book renditions of historical material simply to increase readership? Recall, if you can, your school library. What if everything you read was meant to be in comic form? The rise and fall of The Roman Empire, the Crusades; perchance, the Holocaust?

Actually, I know of one specifically adressing the Holocaust. It was called Maus, and told the story of the Jews ad if they were mice, with a different animal for each nation. I distinctly remember the French were Frogs, although I couldn’t tell you what the actual Nazis were.

I suppose in a roundabout way I can say that I approve of this medium of textbook, as long as it stays true to the source material. It would, however, be a fairly monstrous task to characterize all of those historic figures correctly. Imagine mastering the nuance and politics if someone who was dead a thousand years or more, and then having to proclaim it to acadamia.

Ontem (7) à noite assisti CHE 2.

Longe de escrever uma crítica de cinema, o objetivo deste post é apresentar os pontos mais importantes do filme e reforçar a importância de continuarmos a contar a trajetória revolucionária de Ernesto Guevara:

1) o filme reforça o espírito revolucionário de Che – ele abriu mão do conforto e dos cargos burocráticos de Cuba, conquistados por meio da Revolução Cubana, e foi lutar a favor dos povos oprimidos na África e na América do Sul, neste caso, na Bolívia.

2) e que um dos principais fatores  da “derrota” na Bolívia foi a falta de comprometimento e apoio dos camponeses. Vale lembrar que era um povo muito pobre e não politizado, facilmente manipulado pela imprensa e pelo exército boliviano, orquestrado e abastecido pelas forças armadas dos Estados Unidos.

Imperdível. Assim como o primeiro filme, CHE.

Incansável, Che amou a humanidade como poucos homens até hoje. Sua luta agora é a nossa luta. Pela construção de um povo autônomo e livre, que saiba ler e escrever, crítico e envolvido com a política do cotidiano. Um povo que não se mantenha passivo diante das injustiças, e livre do medo e das esmolas dos que mantém o pensamento único.
