Whew. I can relax. For the past 2-3 months, I’ve been working on my first real Objective-C pro

Whew. I can relax.

For the past 2-3 months, I’ve been working on my first real Objective-C project (my iphone app is still going, it just took a back seat to this): An application that will read tcpdump output and animate the packets over time using their inherent byte / packet structure

And now…it’s up and in beta-ish quality. (Meaning it works, though some error checking and minor features arent quite where I want them.)

You can download it here for free: http://sintixerr.wordpress.com/pkviz-packet-visualizer-and-animator/

This project was important to me and has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to write a packet visualizer since I first started working with data viz 5 or so years ago at NetSec and was using Advizor. That tool cost thousands of dollars per seat, didnt really animate (at least the way I needed), and only parsed CSV or databases. The free tools – like GnuPlot, just weren’t up to the task at all.

I also wanted something that could plot out data in interesting, pretty ways for some art projects I have in mind.

So, I originally started this time around on a quest to write a short python parser for tcpdump ascii hex output to put into <some generic viz tool> just to get started…but somehow I ended up writing a full-fledged visualizer (my first GUI project ever, I might add!). The learning process was a blast – I feel like I’m a much better coder for it – and I’ll be able to extend/expand on this to use for other art and security projects that are on my plate or are coming up.

I’m pretty excited about it. To see this finished through after years of whining to myself about it, procrastinating, and genuinely not having enough time, is pretty awesome. I’ve even already created a couple of cool shots that I’m happy to call “art” (granted, there is some photoshop processing here, but they’re both true to their originals!):

Anyway, Mac Users, check out the tool and let me know what you think!

I’m planning to start an Ubuntu blog seeing as I’ll have a bit of free time over the hol

I’m planning to start an Ubuntu blog seeing as I’ll have a bit of free time over the holiday season. Finally I’ll be able to do something productive with my time, because we all know school is just a waste of that same, precious time.
First thing that came to mind was a list of my favorite applications OF ALL TIME!!!…for Debian based linux, of course.

10. I’m gonna tie two into this spot because they are both tied for this spot in my eyes. These programs are none other than VLC & Vuse.

Vuse is a very nice and polished-up torrent manager that gives you a more welcome feel than allot of the other torrent managers out there. It has a sort of itunes-esq interface, in that you can connect to something they have set up called the Vuse “HD Network” where you can browse, view, and download media in the form of torrents. This is a very innovative feature which I would have liked in many other programs of it’s kind and is great to kill time.

VLC, well, its just amazing. VLC packs a lot of power in it’s lightweight interface, plays all the formats that I have ever needed playing, and is extremely easy to use. I would recommend this application to anyone who likes to download media content instead of watching it online, so they can have it on the go. Just whip out VLC and you can watch it all, and mix up your style with all of it’s intuitive and very useful features.

9. Gimp is a program that allows you to touch up photos like a pro. Is it easy to use? No. Is it beginner friendly? Nah. But if you spend some time on it and get the basics, it can be extremely useful and you’ll be proud of whatever masterpiece comes out of your sweat, blood and tears.

8. Compiz Fusion is a mix between the Beryl and Compiz projects that made all windows/mac users shouting “Damn! Why can’t my desktop be that cool!?”. I, personally preffered beryl back in the day, but this combination of the two projects has proved to be nothing but awesome taking the image of a beautifully tricked-out desktop to the next level. It doesn’t require much more than a decent graphics card and the Compiz/Beryl desktop can be yours.

7. Kdenlive is a video editor that has often been compared to the wonderful Sony Vegas line of movie editing software. Once you have this baby figured out, configured up, and running smoothly you’ll be making movies like a pro and stun your friends with your awesome movie making skills. It’s well worth the ‘kde interface’ induced headaches.

6. Cairo dock is an amazing OS X like dock that brings a little of you onto your desktop with its amazing ability to be customized down to the littles separator or sub-dock. I could go on and on about it but i recommend just searching it on Youtube and Google. If it’s too time consuming, then I would recommend AWN, just type it in synaptic, which brings us to number five.

5. Synaptic Package Manager is something that keeps me using Ubuntu because it makes it easy to just search for a package and have it on your hard drive in a matter of seconds. It comes built in to all gnome distros and is a necessity if you are someone who spends all their allot of their time on the computer.

4. Boxee is a media center that brings sexy back into home theater systems. It’s sleek and works great right out of the box, has so many apps that can be downloaded straight from the program itself, plug-ins galore, a great interface for playing media already on your hard disk, awesome picture quality and feel for a home media center (also fun and easy to set up), the list goes on and on. Just f*cking download it.

3. Hulu desktop is what keeps me sane during stress filled weekdays when i can just kick back and watch 30 Rock, Heroes, The Office, etc. straight from my desktop in crystal clear streaming quality. It’s perfect and would be tied for #1 with the next two if i wasn’t so lazy.

2. Open Office is Microsof Office on dope.

1. Songbird is an amazing music organizer/player that puts itunes to shame. It’s made by mozilla so you know it’s going to be customizable and user friendly right out of the box and it easily retrieves music from the music folder in your home directory so it’s no hastle getting things in and out. Music is huge to me, and this app makes me happy to be alive.

That’s my list and the first of many to come.

I was thinking about how Linux Mint wasn’t totally different from it’s parent distro, Ubuntu, and I was wondering if that would apply in the same way to Debian. Which is better and in what way? Ubuntu, Debian, or Linux Mint?

What I was able to come up with is this:

Debian is cool once you get it up and running and requires a little experience with linux to do so. NOT BEGINNER FRIENDLY in most cases.

Ubuntu is more user friendly and works basically out of the box. Takes a little research to configure to your liking, but nothing the Ubuntu forums and Google can’t answer. ~Big-ass community~

Linux Mint- Great for beginners because it has allot of it’s stuff pre-installed, like codecs, players, etc. Once you have a basic knowledge, moving up the ladder would be manageable. Maybe if you are hesitant about going up one ring you can get Ultimate Edition.

I started out with mint and for now I’m digging Ubuntu so i don’t plan to move up.

Apologies if this is a repeat grumble, but every time I export an EAR file from RSA the dialog box a

Apologies if this is a repeat grumble, but every time I export an EAR file from RSA the dialog box annoys me. Well, that’s a bit unfair, it’s not the whole dialog box, just one very pointless checkbox on it…

So the first time I attempt to export to a destination which already exists, I get a helpful error preventing me doing something potentially stupid. When I know that I’m just re-exporting the same EAR and I’m happy to just overwrite the old one (which probably wasn’t working because I forgot to include something important) I just need to check the “Overwrite existing file” box to make the error go away and I can hit finish. Lovely… except that the dialog remembers this option next time I come to do an export! Basically it may as well not exist after the first export.

It’s actually a bit of a love hate relationship with this little checkbox though, because if it always defaulted to unchecked I think I’d much prefer it to having a dialog popping up asking whether I want to overwrite an existing file. Oh well, almost useful.

Anyway, it’s Friday and time to go home; check.

My main motivation for this project has always been to eventually hear more music and organized soun

My main motivation for this project has always been to eventually hear more music and organized sounds that blow my mind. I’m convinced that if we create tools that allow musicians/composers/uncategorized creators to explore, control and manipulate 3D sound, they will achieve spectacular new works of beauty.

I’ve been meaning to set up this site for a long time. There’s nearly a decade worth of back story to this project and its role in my life. Since we’ve got to start somewhere, I’ll open the topic with a link to my Masters Thesis.

User Issues in the Control of 3D Audio (2003, University of York)

If you choose to read it, the thesis will give you a pretty good sense of where I was going with this in 2003. It also provides a passable overview of the state of the art of 3D audio technologies, as well as the theoretical underpinnings, circa 2003. I offer only two qualifiers regarding the thesis — 1) Some passages are pretty painful to read. I can only hope that I’ve become a better technical writer since 2003, and 2) Mere months after submitting this thesis, I read Edward Tufte’s Visual Display of Quantitative Information (along with his other books), which obliterated many of my assumptions about the utility of 3D displays. More on that some other time.

What’s in a name?

When I say that this thesis was about Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and 3D audio, people inevitably seem to think that it’s about finding ways to incorporate 3D audio into interactive experiences – an extra means for software and tools to deliver information to users. While this is an interesting application of the technology and I certainly look forward to seeing it develop, this is not what I’m talking about.

I want to make tools that enable people (myself included) to create 3D audio stuff. In order to create any successful user interface, the designer must work from an understanding of how your users think about the tasks they are carrying out. This means that in our case, we must find ways to understand how people think about sound & space as they apply to the acts of listening and self expression. That is what I’m talking about here: understanding and addressing the issues that come up when you want to allow users to control 3D audio.

Well, after a long time as a KDE3 user, I was staring into the barrel of a warm gun.
Opensuse 11.2- KDE4.
I had to decide, move to KDE4, become (shudder) a Gnome user, or move to my best alternative- XFCE.
I had tried KDE4 in earlier incarnations, stability and usability issues stopped me experimenting further.
I finally bit the bullet and installed in a VM to test.
At first it was confusing, but once I threw away all convention and read the manual, it worked well.
After a short period of acclimatisation, it just works so well for me, I am astounded by the logicality of it all!
I have played with various GUIs, and this is a real revelation.
Not the half hearted redraw of Vista or win7, but a new, well thought out approach.

As for Opensuse, my dual monitors were identified and configured, along with my Wacom Bamboo tablet, I now have seperate Xserver settings for each login, and it just works smoothly, including interfacing to Exchange on the laptop.

Yes, it is still in development and there is the odd rough spot, but overall, a real advance in usability.
It now sits happily on my main desktop and my dual boot Work Laptop.

Bravo KDE team, and plaudits for the OpenSuse team too!

Many people think of Windows PowerShell as a command line interface (CLI) rather than a graphical us

Many people think of Windows PowerShell as a command line interface (CLI) rather than a graphical user interface (GUI). Shouldn’t it be called a textual user interface (TUI)?

Two peas in a pod, the Console Host (conhost.exe) and PowerShell (powershell.exe) provide a classic cmd.exe style window for typical the shell experience. Actually, in Windows Server 2008 R2 (and Windows 7), not only does conhost.exe host powershell.exe, but also cmd.exe. Therefore, the window environment that the Windows Command Prompt and Windows PowerShell version 2.0 each run in is the same in these latest versions of Windows.

But there is another way – bring on the ISE! On Windows Server 2008 R2, PowerShell can be run in another hosting environment, namely the Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE). How?

Right-click the PowerShell icon in the taskbar, and then chose Windows PowerShell ISE from the menu. Alternately, you could choose Windows PowerShell ISE from the submenu on most PowerShell items in the Start Menu or Administrative Tools. For yet another approach, in either the Windows PowerShell console, Cmd.exe, or in the Start/Search or Start/Run… box, type, powershell_ise.exe.

Once you are in PowerShell ISE, you should have a menu bar with File, Edit, View, Debug, and Help menus; a toolbar offers an array of editing and debugging tools; then there are three panes of the window beneath those, and a status bar at the bottom. The three main panes of the window are (a) a tabbed editor called the Script pane, (b) the command output pane simply referred to as the Output pane, and (c) a prompt for the current command – this is named the Command pane. Script, Output, Command. Let’s look at each of these.

First, there’s no reason to not take PowerShell ISE fullscreen, so if you’re following along on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 in PowerShell v2.0, launch the ISE and go fullscreen. Now. Why be cramped into a small little window with three panes? Also, cozy on up to your <Control> key, because it can really help with navigation.

For serious scripting, or actually even for casual scripting, you can quickly tire of Notepad. Having a tabbed editor integrated into PowerShell ISE is nice. Even better – you can put it where you want it. Type <Ctrl>+1 to show the Script pane on the top (default), <Ctrl>+2 to show it on the right, or <Ctrl>+3 to maximize it so it takes up the whole PowerShell ISE window. When you’re just focused in interactive commands you can hide the script pane simply by typing <Ctrl>+R, which can be used again to bring the script pane back again. If your cursor is in one of the other panes, you can quickly navigate to the script pane by typing <Ctrl>+I (think “input”). Note that you can edit data files (XML, CSV, etc.), text, PowerShell scripts (.ps1), batch files (.bat), or whatever else you want in the the script pane.

Are you interested in learning more about the PowerShell ISE? Tune in to this blog soon for more on the other components. In the meantime, maybe you’ll throw out Notepad and start doing all your file edits in the PowerShell ISE script pane?

I can’t remember whether my fascination with graphical user interfaces (GUI) began with Pong or the Mac SE, but somewhere along my long journey down the digital highway, I became convinced that the concept of GUI was as critical to the evolution of technology as the concept of brand management has been to the evolution of marketing.

Until recently, this conviction has diminished my technical credibility. In the ’80s, when I worked at SAS, I argued that statisticians were not computer scientists (what we called software developers back then) and therefore required a more intuitive manner with which to interface with our software. In the ’90s, when I worked at SGI, I fought the GUI battle for technologies such as email and web browsers, making little headway against UNIX engineers who believed GUI was a costly, inefficient, and irrelevant overhead to perfectly understandable command-line interfaces. I remember thinking then that if SGI—a company built on the vision of computer graphics—didn’t understand the power of graphical interfaces, no company would. Still, when I started my own company, Pie Digital, I stuck to my GUI guns. As my partners and I schlepped Sand Hill Road, I found myself eyed mockingly any time I would tout the holistic UX (User Experience, inclusive of GUI) of the Pie System. It was as if I were talking about our HR practices (nothing against HR—I’ve spent much of my career in HR—but other than being able to recruit engineers quickly, you don’t bring up the strategic relevance of HR practices in a VC pitch). My co-founders eventually convinced me to quell my UX/UI evangelism so we could appear more serious.

Then came the iPhone. Suddenly business folk from all walks are comparing capacitive versus resistive touch screens, arguing over the importance of muti-touch and gesturing, and engaging in all sorts human factors buzz talk. Last week Pie was visited by a CEO from an industry not known for caring a rat’s aorta for UI. He talked to me of the importance for anthropological human-computer interaction (HCI). Stunned, I opened once more the closet door of my evangelism and replied that I believed UX/UI was a primary differentiator for consumer-focused technologies. He nodded in agreement. It was liberating.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office yesterday published a patent application Apple made way back in

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office yesterday published a patent application Apple made way back in 2008 for “Pushing a User Interface to a Remote Device.” So, then…Smart Remotes. Cool!

MacRumor’s Eric Slivka reports that the patent’s lead inventor is William Bull, now Yahoo’s Senior Director of Mobile User Experience, but once upon a time Apple’s iPod User Interface Manager. The so-called “father of the iPod,” Tony Fadell, is also credited.

The idea is simple; portable media devices — such as iPods and iPhones, for example — have their own on-board Graphical User Interface (GUI) and, usually, a built-in screen. Thing is, we don’t always want to take our iPhone out of our pocket when we’re listening to music (or, if you’re me, catching up on podcasts while washing the dishes).

Enter remote controls (referred to in this patent as “accessories”). Often they’re dumb little inline sticks with a few fiddly (not to mention tiny) buttons. They’re useful, but basic, offering perhaps only a half dozen simple controls. Some of the more elaborate remotes have their own little displays, which is all very well and good, except that they also employ their own little GUIs which not only fail to resemble the one on the device you’re trying to control, but often don’t provide full access to all the device’s functions. From the patent application:

…existing remote GUIs are defined and controlled by the remote control device, and consequently, they may bear little resemblance to a GUI supplied by the portable media device itself Certain functions available on the portable media device (such as browsing or searching a database, adjusting playback settings, etc.) may be unavailable or difficult to find.

Apple’s solution is to “push” the device’s GUI to a remote an accessory with a built-in display. Here’s the description from the patent application (I’ve shortened it to just the main points);

The portable media device can provide the accessory with an image to be displayed on the video screen… [and] include various user interface elements that can resemble or replicate a “native” GUI provided directly on the portable media device. The accessory can send information to the portable media device indicative of a user action […] for example, that a particular button was pressed or that a particular portion of a touch-sensitive display screen was touched by the user. The portable media device can process this input to identify the action requested by the user and take the appropriate action. The action may include providing to the accessory an updated GUI image to be displayed, where the updated GUI image reflects the user action.

Essentially this describes a touch-enabled screen, small enough (and dumb enough) to still be called an accessory, which effectively acts as a small auxiliary display/input panel for the device.

I can’t see this making its way into an inline remote (it’s just not Apple’s style to make a wearable remote that’s big) but I can see a future revision of Apple’s current Remote that entirely does away with the buttons, replacing them with a capacitive touch screen.

Future software updates would enable one to connect the remote to a nearby Mac mini, Apple TV, even an iPod touch, and switch between those devices the same way the iPhone Remote app does today. The GUI would change, depending on the selected device.

The only drawback I can see to such a device (and remember, I’m just extrapolating here and imagining a potential future gadget — Apple’s patent application only describes a possible method and not an actual product) is that a remote with a capacitive touch screen will chew through its battery in next to no time. Is it conceivable we’ll be buying a charging dock for a future Apple MultiRemote?

More compelling is the notion that Apple could build this technology into an entire ecosystem, licensing third-party developers to create compatible hardware; imagine a house where a smart display on the door of your refrigerator not only tells you when the milk needs replacing but also allows you to skip tracks on the album you’re playing over AirTunes…

But am I thinking too small? Is this yet another patent application that will, ultimately, come to nothing, or could this be an early clue to a new Apple-tastic revolution?

A Reader asks RecruitAdvisory…

What are the software tools most commonly used by Employers and Search firms?

Short answer:

As an employer or an RPO, just look at the Taskbar at the bottom of your computer screen and see how many apps you have open just to do your recruiting or resourcing management job! You need a platform that integrates all these recruitment tools into one screen to increase productivity and start enjoying recruitment again, don’t you!? That platform is Cloud Computing with extreme ease of use, intuitive, no training required apps sitting on that platform.

http://recruiting.mrted.com/cloud-computing/
http://recruiting.mrted.com/Cloud9-GUI/

Long answer:

The drive for more productivity aswell as better candidates demands more technology.

I counted over 300 vendors doing one thing or another somewhere in the requisition-search-preselect-select-onboard recruitment process, so here’s a partial directory of suppliers in the UK
http://www.ukrecruiter.co.uk/director.htm

I have a list of suppliers that I work with, but I’m looking for more to partner with, so call me if you have a great solution that fits nicely somewhere in the end-to-end recruitment cycle.

Active candidates use job-boards. What really helps are multi posting engines like knollenstein and equest.

What irritated me as a recruiter was having to go into all the job-boards we used to search for CVs one board at a time. So a tool like Daxtra is really helpful. There’s the problem of finding good candidates in the ocean of active applicants. You need CV parsing. You also need to ask these applicants questions online. I would contend you also need to assess their fit with the employer and the specific job, so look at effectivate.

To help pipeline candidates, you need a CRM system like Avature. Being able to search expert forums, blogs and social media for passive candidates can bring big rewards in the long run whether you are an employer or an RPO. LinkedIn, facebook and twitter are great, but there are plenty more social networks, so you need an aggregator to make the most of your time.

There are so many tools that we use nowadays whether we are RPOs or employers. It makes a nonsense to buy a talent management / human capital management / HR suite because they simply don’t address many of the most critical functions of the recruitment process. The priority is to integrate your recruitment tools using a Cloud Computing platform to help you get more satisfaction out of doing a better job.

I am a longtime MS Windows programmer. I worked with Visual Basic, and V.C++, when they were just started while ago and still using them now but I have MS Visual Studio .net installed and I write program using VB, VC++, C#, and others too.

Now I want to move all my programming development to Linux. I also been using and playing with Linux for quite long time. I have moved everything to Ubuntu, my laptop and desktops. so I am all set using Lynx. I also started to develop some programs using Mono that is the C# IDE on Linux. I started writing some programs in C and C++ too. I used GNU gcc, g++, and I edit with emacs. then I found the other IDEs like: Eclipse, Netbeans, Geany, Qt 4 Designer, Anjuta, and finally KDevelop4.

these are great tools for developing C or C++ programs, but, when I wanted to find a good IDE that I can use to develop GUI interfaces, I could not find any yet. I either found a good IDE that I can design my GUI very well, but it fails to program side, OR, I found a good IDE that I can connect between the GUI and the Code and it fails in compiling or does not have good tutorials. I will talk about each in more details…
