Alpine Endeavors guides Kevin Johnson, Joe Vitti and I just returned from a really successful trip to Red Rocks. November can be a tough time to climb just about anywhere in the US, and Red Rocks is no exception. We all spent a good amount of time climbing routes in the sun. The difference between the shade and the sun is frequently about 25 degrees.

Red Rocks is an amazing place to climb. The routes are long, steep and sustained on generally high quality, heavily featured sandstone. The stable, warm weather and close proximity to all amenities makes Red Rocks an incredibly popular climbing destination.

Climbers on the east coast, especially in the Gunks don’t have the chance to climb long routes that frequently. Red Rocks is a real treat, and should be on every east coast climber’s list of places to visit. There are tons of long classic climbs to do and most climbers end up making several trips over many years. Alpine Endeavors took two trips there this year, one in the spring and the one we returned from recently.

Our trip was a success in many ways. A great, yet humbling, time was had by all. Some of the climbs we did this trip are Epinephrine (long, super classic, IV 5.9), Chrimson Chrysalis (steep!, IV 5.9), Johnny Vegas –> Sunflower (IV, 5.9), Olive Oil (5.7) and Rainbow Buttress (IV 5.9). I have posted some of the images from the trip.

2010 is the 100th anniversary of Guiding in Canada!! We will be celebrating with all sorts of activities with the biggest being Guiding Mosaic 2010. I am super excited to be attending this event as the Co-Lead for Waterfront with my good friend Bert!

I attended Canadian Mosaic ‘99 in New Brunswick as a lifeguard & Guiding Mosaic ‘06 as a patrol guider & part-time lifeguard. Both experiences were absolutely fabulous, memorable events.

Bert & I have been working on getting our team in place (of course we are still needing lifeguards!) & planning out the details of the waterfront, but really I’m most excited for when everyone arrives in Guelph next July.

6000 Vertical November Feet (click here for video: http://landerbackcountry.blogspot.com/)

Gotta chance to hook up with Matt yesterday for an awesome marathon tour … marathon for November anyway- for me. Ha! The weather was fantastic, the snow was variable. We eventually found some great power on the sunny side in the bowl. Everywhere else was really variable- powder pockets, punchy soft slabs, and totally wind scoured areas and areas with pretty minimal coverage. Sometimes all of the conditions existed on the same slope/ aspect in the same spot. It was tricky skiing in some places. Although it’s pretty stable now, add another two or three feet to this base and wowee, it could get pretty unpredictable. It was great to get out though.

When the day was done, Matt’s altimeter said we conquered 6000 vertical feet plus. That’s a pretty awesome day for me, in November. This was only the third time I’d been out this year. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good start on the ol’ ski season for me this year though. It sure made the Turkey taste fantastic today. Mmmm, yummy. Time for some pie!

The Otago section of the NZ Alpine Club are holding celebrations this weekend for the centenary of the first ascent of Mt Aspiring - at the Lake Wanaka Centre, from 7.30pm.

The Otago Daily times ran a story today using Maj. Head’s dairy extracts from the 1951 book “Aspiring”, by Scott Gilkison. The writing is in the typically modest style of the time, with no great hoo-ha for their grand achievement…

The first ascent (by Major Bernard Head, along with Mt Cook Guides Jack Clarke and Alex Graham) was via the West Face, a NZ grade-3. It wasn’t until 1969 that the route was finally climbed again, by Jill Tremain and Ian Jowett. Probably with a lot fewer steps cut!

The Bugaboo Range is nestled in the Interior Ranges of British Columbia, a few hours north of Spokan

The Bugaboo Range is nestled in the Interior Ranges of British Columbia, a few hours north of Spokane, Washington. It is home to an incredible amount of alpine rock climbing and a handful of snow/ice routes, and as such, the “Bugs” should be on every climber’s to-do list. While many climbers have heard stories of an epic approach and terrible weather, neither are really true. The approach does require an honest effort of 4-6 hours, climbing about 2500′ over about three miles on an excellent trail and ladder (yes, ladder) system. Once in the alpine, the approaches to climbs are relatively short, ranging from 15 minutes to two hours on average.

Like all alpine climbing venues, the Bugaboos do suffer from inclement weather. Climbing in the peak season (late June – early September) provides the best chance for blue sky days. In the event of less than ideal conditions, many objectives near the Applebee Dome campsite are somewhat sheltered from the weather. Spending a relaxing afternoon in the famous Conrad Kain hut is also a fantastic plan if the weather turns absolutely horrid.

Whether you like long, technical rock routes, moderate scrambles, or aiding up splitter granite cracks the Bugaboos offer something for everyone. Contact me to more information about climbing in the Bugs.

It’s that time of year again. Winter has just set in and you’re already counting the days until you can go rock climbing again. Have no fear though, that day is closer than you think. I just got an email today announcing that registration for the Red Rock Rendezvous has opened. This annual event is not only a great place to learn new climbing skills, meet hundreds of other climbers, and have a really fun time! It’s hard to imagine a better combination of location, quality of climbing, and time of year than Red Rock Canyon in the spring. Everyone should experience it at least once (every spring isn’t too often either)!

To register, visit the Red Rock Rendezvous homepage. I will be available before and after the Rendezvous for single and multi-pitch guiding and instruction. Contact me if you’re interested in dusting off your climbing gear, perfecting your technique, dialing in your rescue skills, or climbing some desert classics!
