Arenanet has already released a book of Guild Wars 2 concept art. The game itself is supposedly being released in early 2011, with perhaps a short beta at the end of 2010. Why so far ahead of the games release? I’m guessing it’s to capitalize on the freshness of the art, as most of it has been released over the internet anyway. Most of Arenanets artists tend to release their art on websites such as Conceptart.org, or submit it to competitions like Spectrum. As I recall they’ve won several awards this way.

You can buy it here.

Sic Semper Tyrannis. Why am I being forced to join Twitter and Facebook if I’m a fan of someth

Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Why am I being forced to join Twitter and Facebook if I’m a fan of something. I understand that game companies love the idea of metrics, but can’t they get that information, oh I don’t know, from their own games? Surely the mountains of statistical data from server databases are enough to quench their thirst for numbers? So it can’t be a lack of information.

It can only be promotion. These are social sites, used to socially keep in touch, socially. MMO’s are social, in that they have a lot of people. Forget for a moment that most of those people are incredibly anti-social. Random dude I knew in high school probably isn’t going to plunk down his money on a game I’m playing for the hell of it. I don’t think it’s a viable means to get the game into the heads of people.

I can’t imagine my aunt who sent me an invitation on Facebook (*shudder*) is remotely interested in playing games. Nor are the vast majority of people who would view my page. Yet I have to be subjected to using the site to keep up to date on game news or offers. I’d rather just look at the website.

Guild Wars 2 is on Twitter, and what useful information do they have there? Well, nothing, but they seem to answer occasional questions. And promote blogs…

I have zero information on my Facebook page, I still get emails with people inviting me every so often. If I actually started to use Facebook, I’d be a little scared of all the people I don’t want to talk to coming out of the woodwork. That’s my own problem though, as is whether or not to sign up this blog to Facebook and Twitter. A decision which is somewhat difficult for me, since I should probably promote it in some way.

There is another possibility, that they’re trying to create a sense of community. Something the original Guild Wars lacked. Runes of Magic doesn’t have that problem though, and I’m still forced to sign up to get a chance at free in game items.

I guess what I’m asking is, should I be forced to help promote? Maybe I don’t want to be counted as one of the thousands of people friended on Facebook. Yet I miss out on fun details or decorative hats if I don’t. No matter how much I like a game, maybe it should be me telling people to play. Not some random statistic generated by a useless fad for a meaningless press release.

Stick that in your twitter feed.

Back in 2008 Arenanet announced a trilogy of books would be released accounting for the story between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. The first of these books will be called Guild Wars: Fall of Ascalon. It will be written by Matt Forbeck.

We know from the Movement of the World that King Adelbern in a last desperate attempt to stave off the Charr, used powerful magic to turn Ascalon’s defenders into undead guardians. So I’m figuring that might factor into the climax. Maybe.

It’s set to be released in early 2009, February 23rd being one possible date. April 27th being another, but both dates are probably just place holders until they decide. There is no information whatsoever on the other books, although there is evidence to suggest that J. Robert King will be writing the 2nd book, possibly entitled Guild Wars: Dragonrise. Or at least there was evidence of that, when Kill Ten Rats took a look at it. Any information they gleamed from his publication list is now gone. Possibly due to information having been leaked early. I find Arenanet’s lack of information disturbing. The first book could be released as early as a mere 3 months from now. Wheres the marketing?

I have to admit, Arenanet is really good at not saying anything when they don’t want to.

Not exactly what comes to mind when you think pirate right? I certainly don’t think ‘giant metal helmet’ or ‘mismatched gladiatorial style armour and kilt’. I tend not to be the type to imagine that pirates would wield a pick-axe with chain attachment. This is why you hire concept artists. So that your game does not end up looking exactly like your biggest competitor.

Then again, some people want their game to resemble their biggest competitor.

Added bonus: This seems to be ranger armour. You can thank Guild Wars 2 Guru.

Now the first four images on this blog, are definitely from GW2, and I believe the rest are from the original Guild Wars. The fourth, which I have both seen described as Mountain Fortress, and Durmand Priory (hidden archive of the Order of Whispers) could be either, or both, or neither. The rest are boring buildings.

Wasn’t even worth posting until I found something similar in this thread on Guild Wars 2 Guru, that being possible rifle, pistol, and scythe art. Now while the artist who worked on this stuff, stopped working at Arenanet before they even began working on GW2 in earnest, it at least gives you an idea of what some weapons could look like. Might look like. Maybe.

I don’t know what to play. I don’t really have any friends playing MMO’s that I want to play right now. Aion seems, frankly, bad. Runes of Magic was forcing me to spend tons of time and money in ways I didn’t want to spend them. Guild Wars bores the living crap out of me, I played it for a long time.

This is why I’ve been burying myself in Guild Wars 2 research. Actually, I was hoping it was coming out soon. I had it in my head it would come around mid 2010. The whole point of MMO’s to me is playing with people. I don’t see myself signing up to any MMO’s if I can’t find someone I know to play with.

There are a lot of games to choose from online, but I may have to blog about single-player games for a while. Dragon Age: Origins? I’ve never played Morrowind. I’m currently playing Fallout 3. I’ve got a few games to play through that I never really got to.

On the horizon there’s Allods, which is free to play, so I may as well check it out. Even though it sounds like Runes of Magic all over again. Star Trek Online in February, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and Guild Wars 2. I’m guessing the constant scrutinizing of all things GW2 isn’t going away, but that it’ll pick up a bit for SW:TOR.

When I spoke in my last post about servers battling each other in grand Alliance Battle style fights

When I spoke in my last post about servers battling each other in grand Alliance Battle style fights, I started getting pretty curious. What had they announced about pvp? I went back over some of the things I’ve read, and in general there’s not a lot to talk about for the hardcore. The only thing I can find out that isn’t related to the server vs server pvp is that you will be able to jump right in, as in GW1.

In GW1 you can create pvp or pve characters. Pvp characters allow you to start pvping right away, but they can’t participate in the pve areas. In GW2 it appears that these 2 types of characters will be eliminated, and any character you can create can jump into pvp immediately. You won’t even unlock skills, according to Zam’s interview, you’ll be ready to go almost instantly.

The server vs server gameplay has more details. This article on Kill Ten Rats has some good insight based on some information from a translation of a Dutch interview on GuildWars2Guru. Basically, large numbers of people, possibly often outnumbered can fight over resources. I’ll just quote the same section they did.

The World PvP Maps bear a resemblance to RTS-maps and give you a chance to play different roles. You can conquer stone mines, which will then deliver stone by caravan to your catapults, you can attack and cut off caravans of the enemy, you can operate as a scout and inform the rest of hostile movement, you can man watchtowers and defend, or you can just run up to a lost PvP’er and teach him a lesson. All these actions will earn you experience.

That sounds like Alliance Battles but more awesome. AB’s are essentially about controlling shrines, the more you control, the more points you got per kill. Slightly more to it than that, but not much. These World PVP (what they’re calling it) matches sound kind of awesome. Hundreds of people. Cool.

The Zam interview mentions one thing specifically I’ll take note of. In the early days of Guild Wars, America, Europe, and Korea, all fought for control over the Hall of Heroes. Continent versus Continent and the drops weren’t bad either. I only ever got as far as the 2nd round, mostly because I felt like I was over-powered and not giving others a fair chance. A side benefit to controlling HoH was that your continent would receive the blessing of the gods. Altars would activate that you could receive buffs from, or travel to the Underworld or the Fissure of Woe from.

Every person who helps their world is just making their world stronger; there’s nothing you can do that makes your world less-strong if you’re out there in PvP.

Does that sound like a similar mechanic to anyone? I wonder if they’re going down that road again. There were problems with this in GW1, some places held power over HoH for exceedingly long times. Eventually it was changed, and for the better. I wonder if I’m misreading this or do they have something in mind?

Back in September Massively put up another interview which I will now dissect with much nerdliness.

Back in September Massively put up another interview which I will now dissect with much nerdliness.

The initial question is about game conferences, but the second question brings up some interesting points about fantasy settings and technology. Game Designer Eric Flannum says that they’ve never considered Guild Wars a standard fantasy setting, so bringing in technology seems fitting if the storyline takes place 250 years later. He also goes on to say the Charr are on the verge of significant technological breakthroughs. We already know that Rangers and possibly other classes will be using rifles and pistols. Perhaps even a Gunner class of some sort. What further technological breakthrough could the Charr be on the verge of making? The Printing Press?

The interview moves from there into the Sylvari Night Court, Judge Harry T. Stone presiding, and from there we go underwater again. Fortunately this turns up a couple of interesting mentions of underwater cities, ruins, caverns, new enemies, and friendly races. Unfortunately that’s as far as it goes, no names of cities, races, enemies or anything else.

Then Massively gets shot down. A lot. No answers to their mount question, pre-sear question, maximum level question, no new information on the novels, and no information about whether there will be a dual class system.

Which only leaves one question left of interest. Apparently there’s going to be servers. I guess one type of pvp will be server versus server. The way they describe it I’m imagining Alliance Battles on a grander scale. With benefits for servers who can do some damage. Alliance Battles were the only style of pvp in Guild Wars I ever really liked. They also say transferring to other servers will be easier than other games, I’m hoping that’s true, I’ve always felt for instance that World of Warcraft charges way too much for a server transfer, 25$ if I recall correctly.

I don’t know whether to be happy or sad about servers. I’ve met a lot of people in Guild Wars, it would suck not to hang out with them. Servers are great though, I admit the community feeling in games with servers is superior to those without. Guild Wars always had that problem. Just way too many outposts, cities, mission outposts. You got lost in anonymity. With servers you get to know people, or hate them.

Jerks you hate are the real villains of any online game, and you can’t be a hero without villains right?

The official Guild Wars 2 site has plenty of concept art, but for some reason they’re leaving

The official Guild Wars 2 site has plenty of concept art, but for some reason they’re leaving out a lot of amazing stuff.

I used to scour the conceptart.org forums for Guild Wars 1 concept art, a lot of their artists seem to post there. Usually the art was posted long after the release of games but it was always interesting to see how in game models were initially conceptualized. Anyway there’s a bunch of stuff not available on the main site in this thread.

I have noticed the occasional poor connection problem with that site though so I’ll also point to Creative Uncut, which seems to have all the same images. Not sure which site has stuff the others don’t, so you’ll have to find out for yourself.

Creative Uncut actually interests me a bit more. They’ve actually added titles to each piece, which on some level I can gleam information from. For instance the “Female Gunner” might indicate they were considering a Gunner class at some point? The Charr wielding the giant cannon seems to back that up. Yet if Rangers are using bows and guns/rifles, it doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense to have an entire class devoted to Gunners.

There’s also a couple of Sylvari images called “Sylvari – Spring” and “Sylvari – Winter”. An allusion to the “seasons” that create some form of personal story for your Sylvari character? If their visual appearance is anything to go by, choosing winter over spring would give your character a bit of a darker look. Speculation, but what else am I going to yammer on about.

“Zojja – Golemancer” is also interesting. Another possible class? I hope these are the actual titles. Golemancer would kind of fly in the face of my summoner theory? Or would it?

We’ve seen art of Divinity’s Reach, the human city, Black Citadel, a Charr city, Rata Sum, the Asuran city, and there are three pieces here called Denravi. In Guild Wars 1, it’s a city of the druids abandoned years before the events of Prophecies. Possible Sylvari city? It’s not anywhere near the tree that according to lore gives birth to the Sylvari, but it seems to me that this is a possibility.

Specific dungeons haven’t really been mentioned but “Catacombs” seems likely. There were catacombs, not a dungeon exactly, in the pre-searing area of the original GW, I’m putting money down on a return to that dungeon since pre-searing is incredibly popular. “Sorrows Furnace” is an obvious indication we’ll be going back there.

“Ogre Fortress”, “Giant”, “Sea Monster” are all things I actually want to see in game. For some reason I like getting to fight things that are much larger than me. Much larger.

Finally, “Summoned” is one of the best pieces of art I’ve seen for GW2. It also lends credibility to my summoner claims. Weirdly I am not at all interested in playing any Summoner class if it exists. I just can’t shut up about it for some reason.

Interesting what you can speculate based on concept art titles isn’t it?

There is another interview from Online Welten about Guild Wars 2, released a few days later. I

There is another interview from Online Welten about Guild Wars 2, released a few days later. I’ve read through several interviews and articles released since august, IGN and Pause.com for instance, and the OW interviews have been the most informative.

A couple of the first questions clarify a few things, Zhaitan seems to be the focus of the initial release. Which is fine I guess, I finally get to go to Orr. Cantha and Elona come later, which is not really a surprise. A couple things covered in another interview, and then the dumb questions start in again. OW, why do you frustrate me. “Will there be a 24 rhythm to the day/night cycles?” What would be the point of day/night cycles if most people only saw one part of the cycle? “Will there be weather effects?” “Will I be able to see snowflakes and rainbows?”

Then a question that coincides with a subject I’m curious about. Long ago I’d heard that rangers in GW2 (along with the ability to still use a bow) would have rifles, and that technology would play a larger role. The question is whether or not that fits within lore. The answer surprised me.

This reaction is actually something that we were a bit surprised by. The world of Guild Wars has a tradition of using “black powder,” from the powder kegs used to blow open doors in Prophecies to the fireworks and giant turtle cannons in Factions. We thought it was a natural evolution over the course of 250 years for our races to advance their technology. This was especially true of the charr, who have pioneered the use of technology since they have given up on the notion of gods and consider the use of magic to be a sign of weakness.

Flannum, you were surprised that online game players don’t like change? You’re surprised that a change in basic setting caused an apprehensive reaction amongst mmorpg nerds? Come on. Also why point to the Charr as technology users, when Asurans are the obvious footnote? Atheists don’t strike me as much of a fantasy race either. Although Richard Dawkins would be proud.

Another question brings up dungeons. You’re on a roll OW.

Almost all of our dungeons have some underwater areas and a couple of them do indeed have significant amounts of underwater exploration. We generally regard underwater exploration as another tool to help us make varied and interesting environments, so we use it whenever it seems appropriate based on the setting and situation.

Even at the best of times Guild Wars often turned into a Kill, Crush, Destroy robot scenario with not a whole lot of thinking required. The few things they’ve mentioned about dungeons seem to indicate more intricate designs, traps, strategies. In the last interview when they mentioned they went underwater instead of allowing players to fly, it sounded relatively uninteresting. It sounds as though they’ve put a lot of work into the underwater areas though.

The next question is standard interview fare for an MMO. How big is it? The answer is just so vague I had to mention it. “Well it’s big, really big. We’re talking humongous. Giant. Really long and hard and…” yeah you get the idea.

The last question that interests me is about Sylvari Telepathy. Flannum corrects OW saying that its more like racial empathy and that it has some effect on gameplay but only for Sylvari players. I don’t have any snarky comments to make, it just bares noting that sounds kind of awesome.

I’m keeping my eyes out for more interviews, but next up will probably be a post about those boring ass youtube videos. I’ll hunt around for more stuff though.

Welten means worlds. I googled that. You’re welcome.

Onlinewelten, the German gaming site put up an interview, that actually went over some stuff I hadn’t heard about, and hopefully you haven’t either, because that would make this whole blog post not a complete waste of time for the 6 people who will read it.

The first few paragraphs mostly go over lore related questions, stuff I couldn’t give a rats ass about. “Where have the Charr females been in the first Guild Wars?” Barefoot pregnant and in the kitchen. “Why are there images of male and female Sylvari if they’re plants?” Maybe they listen to Marvin Gaye. Tell us about the Nightmare Court? I’ll do you one better, I’ll tell you about Night Court and the zany antics of Judge Stone! In all seriousness there are some lore related answers here that are kind of interesting.

The interview starts to pick up speed when they ask Eric Flannum, game designer I believe, about seasons correlating with a character’s back-story. Here’s his answer

Each race has a number of factors that will change their personal story. Some of the things that are equivalent to sylvari seasons include a human’s racial heritage, a norn’s animal totem of choice, a charr’s legion affiliation, and an asura’s college.

I’m pretty curious about this personal story thing. Neverwinter Nights has a back-story mechanic of sorts, where you can choose to be a “trouble-maker” and being from a certain place might make you “tough” as examples. He seems to be saying it won’t have an effect on gameplay, I’m a little disappointed by that.

As the interview continues I start to notice these people at OW kind of kick my ass. I’ve never seen an interview where they mention seasons and Sylvari? Have I? Nor did I notice any major change in Asuran appearance. I was pretty much ignorant of what a Kodan is. This does explain some concept art though.

We have seen news that norn can transform into ravens. Will players be able to fly?

Where the f did you see that!? I suppose I should be paying closer attention. I like how Flannum immediately shifts the conversation away from the Norn shape-changing forms into things they’ve already discussed and shown bits of in the trailer, the underwater exploration. Yeah that’s related to what he asked you. Good job. Relevant.

There’s a quick mention of races not being restricted from playing with each other, no horde/alliance problems, and then it goes into what appears to be a sensitive area. Pets or Summoned creatures. Now the interview doesn’t use the word summon, but I talked once with a dude who claimed to have played an in house alpha, over a year ago. He mentioned a lot of things, stuff we mostly know about now, but there were some things Arenanet seems to be avoiding. Professions for instance. He claimed they were fooling around with the idea of around 12 professions, including a summoner. The way Flannum phrases his answer just makes me think summoner.

Which leaves the last question, “Why aren’t there dwarves?” Obviously there are not enough games with dwarves in them so this is a big problem Arenanet. Get on this dwarf shortage problem please. Don’t be a hater. I’m sure they’ll be quite glad I pointed this out. You’re welcome.

The Guild Wars Halloween event was always one of it’s most popular. The string of new quests they released through the event is a great way to drive interest in the sequel. If that is what they’re doing. It’s what I would do, but, I doubt Dhuum is even going to appear in Guild Wars 2.

I mentioned before, I did the first one, and then lost interest after I caught some degen in the underworld and had to start over. At the time there were 4 quests in total. The followups, had I finished the 2nd, would have been to simply catch one skeleton, and then 3, with a consumable item.

Kinda boring, but, there is now a 5th quest. Which is…incomplete? It says to wait. The implication is that eventually we will be fighting Dhuum himself. A new boss fight? I’m not sure, but the title of the quest is interesting. The Waiting Game. Har har Arenanet you devils. Its funny how we’ve all waited loyally more than 2 years for morsels and tidbits of measly information and you have made that very funny with the title of your quest. Har har. I am so amused by this 2 year wait. HAR HAR. Hardy HAR fucking har!!

sigh.

Arenanet announced the end of the Guild Wars campaigns at the same time it suggested for the first t

Arenanet announced the end of the Guild Wars campaigns at the same time it suggested for the first time, Guild Wars 2. They were in a unique position, Guild Wars was flawed (you can’t jump!) but also very successful. When the decision was made to go ahead and make a sequel, which would take years, they had to announce it. Otherwise they would have all these fans, promised tons of campaigns, freaking out, disappointed. I would assume all kinds of nerd rage would explode in peoples pants over that course of action.

Since then, there had been extremely little leaked to the fans about work on GW2. That is until recently, when interviews began to periodically appear, and of course the GW2 site was unveiled along with the trailer. From March 2007, to august 2009, virtually nothing new was known about the game. That’s a long wait.

Eurogamer to the rescue last august. A fairly detailed interview talking about some of the things I’ve been most curious about.

One of the first things of note is when the lead designer says “I think I can safely say that you won’t see a single exclamation mark floating above a character’s head in Guild Wars 2″. That’s actually quite a departure, can you even think of an MMO that doesn’t have ! over every npc? I wonder what kind of difference that will make. In every game I’ve ever played there’s always a ton of newbies unable to find npcs or quests even though they are marked on a map and have giant exclamation points over there heads. That could be a bad sign, as those people normally clutter up chat with their inane questions, will chat have that much more spam because of a simple change like this?

Not to spend too much more time on something seemingly minor, but I think it will change basic behaviour regarding quests. It might require people to think more, or engage in the game on a deeper level, than just walking up to a clearly marked quest giver, taking the quest without reading it, doing the quest without reading it, handing it in without ever knowing whats going on in the quest. Instead the interview describes events, that you interact with to obtain quests.

The next thing of note is mention of crafting. Well good, I like crafting, but there’s little to no detail here. GW1’s crafting was, well, non-existent. I can only hope that crafting is of use and profitable in gw2.

Most of the rest of the interview is made up of things we already know. The companion system was announced back in 2007, no new information here. Most of the pvp info is regurgitated from 2007, with perhaps a slight hint of in world pvp. Does he mean, when I’m out in the world exploring, there is possibility for pvp? Hard to say. The five races have all been known for some time, no hints of new professions, although I’ve heard rumours personally.

Anyway, many more interviews have been released since this one, and I’ll try to go through them all over the next week. This slow crawl is becoming quite the bursting dam, ok I’m dropping the dumb metaphor now.

Hello there, young video game fan. I’m sure you probably already knew, a huge wave upcoming PC games are to be released in the near future.

Even though more than half of gamers are RPG players, FPS and strategy gamers still are a noteable part of the online world. Nevertheless,Nonetheless, nearly all die hard gamers (the gamers escaping class and work to play until 2am everyday) are fanatical to RPGs like World of Warcraft. Some MMORPG players believe that playing RPGs are most worthwhile, since rare items and high levels are easier to recognize than aiming and RTS management skill. Even so, there still are plenty of FPS and strategy hardcore gamers all over. For example, the hardcore Starcraft and hardcore Counter Strike gamers. They both play a game that is most likely older than their youngest brother.

Why exactly it is curcial to acknowledge these facts of PC gamers, is that this new age of PC games has quite a selection aimed at these old school gaming addicts. SC 2 will undoubtedly generate the largest impression, thanks to the advantage of being the follow up to the most successful online game ever created. Even a country is waiting for SC 2, seeing that Starcraft:Broodwar is nearly the most popular game of Korea, which feature the staggeringly big gaming organization, called KeSPA. Diablo 3 is one more new hyped up Blizzard title, thanks to being the follow up to a mega hit game, Diablo 2. Diablo I was the opening title of the Diablo franchise, and guided the way for hack and slash games following. Reproducing Diablo’s original recipe is a tricky goal that most imitations have failed to accomplish. Fortunately, maybe unfortunately for fans, role playing games have moved their focus away from developing the hack and slash genre towards the slow paced RPG style of World of Warcraft.

If I were make a chronological graph (yes, time plays a considerable part in this examination) of the most flourishing computer games ever made, one could observe Blizzard has been the leading figure of the industry, to the point of almost being a monopoly. Through the first period of PC games, Starcraft 1 set the standard for Strategy games, and ultimately all online games in general. Then came Diablo 2, which mesmerized a whole new collection of online RPG gamers, making previous online RPGS look like child’s play. Now, no PC game comes close the sum of revenue World of Warcraft’s 3 plus million players create. Debuting MMORPGs regard WoW as the game to out do. It is practically inevitable that all new online RPG representative interviewed is asked, “Tell us, how does your MMORPG compare to WoW?” Regardless, I think it is often agreed that WoW ought to die out in the near future, and leave some room for the next era of MMORPGs. Yet if the persistence of prior Blizzard games acts as a guide, don’t keep your fingers crossed for the fall of world of warcraft.

Yes, even if D3 and Starcraft 2 have an advantage over lesser recognized titles, there are still a few upcomers that act as a visible threat. Hype and support by a incredibly powerful company does not always equal the guidelines for a winner, take a look at AoC (Age of Conan). Guild Wars II is the sequel to the MMORPG that was formerly hyped to be the World of Warcraft slayer, which for a time was quite plausible. SWTOR (Star Wars: the Old Republic) is yet another anticipated online RPG supported by a significant amount of enthusiasts, but of different kinds. Earth Rise is another title that is little recognized but could possibly become a winner. May we witness another epic clash of gaming companies? Will we behold a WoW-esque transformation in online gaming? Only time will tell; but I have my money on Starcraft 2.

While most of gamers are MMORPG players, the FPS and strategy gamers still play a noteable cut of the online industry. But the majority of zealous gamers (the gamers skipping work or class to game late into 5am everyday) are fanatical to online RPGs; for example, World of Warcraft. Some RPG players claim that playing MMORPGs are more worthwhile, since high level characters are easier to show to others than first person shooter and real time strategy talent. Even so, there are loads of first person shooter and real time strategy addicted gamers out and about. Some that come to into mind are the diligent Starcraft and diligent Counter-Strike players. Both gamers play a game that is most likely older than their youngest family member.

Why it is curcial to recognize these facts of PC gamers, is that this new era of video games has quite a selection targeted at these hardcore gaming addicts. SC 2 will certaintly create the most noteworthy splash in the pool, having the pleasure of being the after product to the greatest RTS game ever created. Hell, a whole nation is eargerly awaiting Starcraft 2, given that Starcraft I is basically the most popular activity of Korea, who own the remarkably large gaming organization, KeSPA. Diablo 3 is yet another new popular Blizzard game, as it is the the follow up to the hugely popular game, Diablo 2. Diablo 1 was the original title of the Diablo series, and guided the way for dungeon crawling, hack and slash type games. Replicating Diablo’s perfect recipe is an ambitious act that most imitations have failed to do. Fortunately, maybe unluckily for some people, games have changed their interest away from improving the dungeon crawling and towards the much slower paced online RPG design of WoW.

If you devise a time list (yes, time is a considerable part in this analysis) of the most flourishing online games ever made, one could see Blizzard has almost always been the leading company of the industry, to the sense of almost being a complete domination. During the first generation of complex computer games, Starcraft I set the benchmark for Strategy gaming, and really all online games in general. Then came Diablo 2, which captivated a new collection of gamers, making previous MMORPGs look like child’s play. Currently, no game in the world makes nearly the amount of cash World of Warcraft’s over 3 million gamers create. Developing online RPGs look at WoW as the game to beat. It is practically expected that every new online RPG director interviewed is asked, “So, in what way your online RPG improve over WoW?” Regardless, it is pretty much agreed upon that World of Warcraft ought to fall down soon, and allow some breathing room for the next era of online RPGs. On the other hand if the stubbornness of preceding Blizzard games serves as a guide, I wouldn’t keep your fingers crossed for the fall of WoW.

Yes, even if D3 and Starcraft 2 have an advantage over lesser known titles, there are still various new comers that act as a noticeable oppnonent. Hype and development by a extremely strong company does not always result in the formula for success, as shown by AoC (Age of Conan). Guild Wars II is the follow up to the MMORPG which was originally estimated to be the WoW killer, which for a while seemed quite possible. SWTOR (Star Wars: the Old Republic) is yet another hyped up online RPG supported by a large number of followers, but of different kinds. Earth Rise is one more game that is scarcely recognized but could possibly become a winner. May we spectate another epic clash of gaming companies? Will we observe a World of Warcraft-esque revelation in online gaming? Only time will tell; only time will tell.

Even though the majority of PC gamers are MMORPG players, first person shooter and real time strategy players still take a hefty percentage of the online gaming industry. However, nearly all hardcore gamers (the gamers skipping class and work to game until 4am everyday) are captivated to online RPGs; namely WoW. Some RPG players say that playing RPGs are more worthwhile, since powerful character equipments are easier to show off than first person shooter and RTS management talent. Even so, there are still plenty of FPS and RTS online game hardcore gamers out there. For example, the dedicated Starcraft and devout Counter Strike players. Both groups play a game that is most likely older than their youngest sister.

Exactly why it is important to acknowledge these facts of PC gamers, is that this new age of PC games has quite a assortment designed for these hardcore gamers. SC 2 will undeniably make the biggest influence, having the pleasure of being the continuation to the most successful online game in history. Hell, an entire nation is in anticipating of SC II, seeing that Starcraft Brood War is virtually the main game in Korea, who boast the miraculously big Starcraft Brood War league, KeSPA. While more than half of online gamers are RPG players, FPS and RTS gamers still play a significant portion of the online gaming world. Yet, nearly all zealous gamers (the players avoiding work or class to game late into 4:30am everyday) are addicted to RPGs like World of Warcraft.
Exactly why it is important to recognize these trends of PC gamers, is that this new period of PC games has quite a assortment designed for these hardcore gamers. Starcraft II will indubitably create the biggest influence, having the pleasure of being the follow up to the best real time strategy game ever created. Even a complete country is in anticipating of Starcraft 2, given that Starcraft I is pretty much the leading game of Korea, which have the miraculously huge Starcraft Brood War organization, named KeSPA. Copying Diablo 1’s original formula is a tough objective that the majority of replicas have failed to reproduce. Luckily, maybe regrettably for some, gaming companies have shifted their attention away from perfecting the hack and slash genre and towards the less fast paced paced online RPG style of WoW.

If someone was to create a time chart (yes, time plays a significant part in this analysis) of the most successful PC games ever created, one could see Blizzard has almost always been the ruling entity of the gaming industry, to the sense of almost being a complete domination.

Yes, while Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 have a lead over less recognized titles, there are still some new comers that act as a noticeable threat. Hype and development by a absurdly powerful company is not always the guidelines for a winner, as shown by Age of Conan.
