The criticism of Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to try the Guantanamo 5 in New York h

The criticism of Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to try the Guantanamo 5 in New York has been bipartisan and vehement. It is only in the far reaches of the Upper East and West Sides and Greenwich Village that we hear of the whispers of the wisdom of the decision.

Former prosecutors are united; the governor has slammed the President publicly, and anyone with a grain of common sense realizes that these cases are fraught with danger from the methods used to apprehend the perpetrators to their interrogation to the years of delay in charging and indicting them. The discovery process will demand the release of top-secret evidence and the compromise of intelligence sources and special relationships.

Mr. Holder has also now offered these terrorists the largest soapbox on the planet with the most loopy media in the world west of Teheran and Pyongyang as their megaphone. Everyone from Jon Stewart to Keith Olbermann to Good Morning America will run this nonstop and taint everything associated with what should be one of the most somber and grave events in our country’s legal history.

These cases are, according to existing federal law, minefields of massive proportions and every two bit leftist defense lawyer on the planet will try to gain the spotlight outdoing each other with stunts and press conferences. It will make the Chicago 7 trial in 1968 look like a Benedictine monastery at lunchtime. It will also further the cause of terrorism, as every eye in the Middle East will tune into the daily feed of martyrdom on every channel.

Monsters of this nature can only be tried under the highest standards of justice in an almost pristine environment. Miranda rights really do not apply at this level of horror. Nuremburg and the Tokyo war crimes trials set the standards, but those rules were agreed upon by some of the finest legal minds of the 20th Century from multiple legal backgrounds under extraordinary circumstances. Those rules do not apply in the Southern District of New York. Miranda does.

Attorney General Holder and his boss have pulled the pin on a hand grenade with this one and are playing hot potato.

This is exactly why Rudy is loathed in the tri-state area. The guy sticks his cancer ridden nose into everything. As NY DA he was busy planting evidence to get the mafia hooked up into prison, which he succeeded in doing. Gotti Senior died there least we forget that Rudy’s dad was busy picking stuff that fell off the truck his whole youth. Rudy’s dad was one of them – a mafia who got iced by his own. Rudy used the American law system to drag them into the mud – vendetta style. He’s a real gydaloon. Rudy sucks.

He pretends he’s all concerned but he’s all about sex, money, rock and roll. I never saw a mayor more ready to donna wig and makeup and a granny like outfit to do a commercial with The Donald with our mayor dressed as A FREAKING WOMAN. He did this several times each more scary than the last.

Rudy has to shut up and leave NJ politics to us not try to ruin our votes. PEOPLE DON’T LISTEN TO THIS CRACKPOT – He’s still loopy from his prostate cancer -

Now Rudy – not satisfied in ruining NYC alone wants to come and is coming to NJ to support Republican gov contender CHRIS CHRISTIE. Rudy is a crook and needs to be sent home packing. C’mon people – let’s get rid of these stoogie Republicans once and for all!!!

By Stella Lohmann
Interview July 2009, New York, NY

September 6, 2009—Atlanta, GA
Eight years haven’t erased horrific images and gut wrenching emotions of September 11, 2001—the day the world stood still—the day 343 New York firemen, 23 NYPD and 37 Port Authority officers perished as they attempted to do their jobs—protect the people of New York City. As the world watched live broadcasts of two jetliners careening into the Twin Towers, more than 2300 civilians, women, men and children would be trapped and incinerated along with those who used two aircrafts as weapons of mass destruction.

Eight years later, September 11th is nationally observed as Patriot’s Day, in honor of the fallen: civilians on Flight 93 who overpowered their hijackers and died saving the White House from a possible attack, government workers at their desks as a third jet slammed into the Pentagon and the thousands of innocent civilians martyred in NYC as America went to war unexpectedly.

An estimated number of New Yorkers suffering from post-traumatic-stress disorder as a result of 9/11: 422,000! September 11th in Numbers No one person witnessed the pain, managed the efforts, and lived the aftermath of 9/11 like Former NYPD Commissioner Bernard Kerik–his life forever changed as he stood side by side advising Mayor Rudy Giuliani and President Bush in the days and months that followed–strategizing the next move and contemplating what else could happen. It was the worst attack on the US mainland. Pearl Harbor awoke a Sleeping Giant after Japanese fighters dropped bombs annihilating ships while crews slept on a cool December 7th, in 1941. 9/11 awoke America to a world threatened by terrorists.

Kerik agreed graciously to relive those events etched forever in his memory as we drove through the Big Apple. His memories are thick with details of people jumping out of windows to their death, firemen and police officers running up the Twin Towers packing heavy equipment, and the massive evacuations of a city within hours of the attacks. It was a day that never ended. Kerik says it was just the beginning of 16 to 20 hour days weeks on end and thousands of decisions and plans never contemplated before in American history. Amazingly he, like MayorGiuliani, attended hundreds of funerals for friends, for colleagues, and for those who died just because there went to work that day.

Kerik recalled Father Judge, the NYFD chaplain, making the sign of the cross over him and Mayor Giuliani then saying, “Be safe”, as the two made their way to a command center from the bottom of Tower II. Forty minutes later, Tower II would implode as the Father and others ran into the burning inferno to save others.

“Imagine you wake up one day and every best friend you have ever had is gone,” reflected Kerik. Indeed, imagine. There were no indications that America would be under attack when the sun rose that September morning. There were no blue prints to follow or others to ask what to do. Kerik just responded. The native New Jersey boy grew up in foster homes and later joined the City’s finest only to catapult from undercover detective to Commissioner of the nation’s largest city.

Shortly after 9/11 the United States retaliated with Operation Iraqi Freedom and Kerik was appointed by President George W. Bush as Interim Deputy of Interior in Iraq. Again Kerik used his bullish-no-nonsense approach to law and order and established a civilian force to maintain the peace in a newly emerging democracy. Kerik managed to lead at home and abroad training others including the troops on how to keep America safe.

Eight years later Kerik is battling charges filed against him the day after he turned down an appointment by President Bush as America’s first Homeland Security Director. Kerik withdrew his name in order not to draw the President into legal battles alleging tax evasion, conspiracy, and lying under oath. Next month, Kerik will stand before a Judge to answer these charges that have been dropped several times only to be filed again under different jurisdictions. The outcome could vindicate or convict him next month. Bernard Kerik: The Trial of An American Hero

Neither can take away from his career of faithful service in law enforcement particularly through this nation’s darkest hour in recent history. Bernard Kerik has served his country abroad training American troops toward an emerging democracy in the Middle East. Bernard Kerik has endured incredible pressures for the sake of his fellow Americans. On this September 11th Kerik perhaps should be at the top of the list of living 9/11 heroes honored for Patriot’s Day by a grateful nation.

Sept. 11th is Patriot's Day

[/

“Suçlarla mücadeleyi nasıl başardın?” sorusuna Guiliani’nin cevabı: “Metruk bir bina düşünün. Binanın camlarından biri bile kırık olsa, o camı hemen tamir ettirmezseniz, çok kısa sürede, oradan geçen herkes bir taş atıp, binanın tüm camlarını kırar. Ben ilk cam kırıldığında hemen tamir ettirdim.

Bunu anlayan New York polisi, önce küçük suçların peşine düşmüş.

Of all the dumb ass things to think or say for that matter, it seems that Rudy Guiliani thinks that fat cat bonuses for Wall Street executives is a good thing that keeps jobs for New Yorkers?

WHAT THE FUCK????!!!!!!!

Yep that’s what he said. His argument is that with the bonuses will lead to more spending in restaurants and department stores. So in other words if Mortimer is not spending his multi-million dollar bonus at the Waldorf Astoria and Barney’s… those companies will be forced to lay off employees!

It’s three days before our National Election 2008. Even the number of “undecideds”

It’s three days before our National Election 2008. Even the number of “undecideds” has been whittled away. The latest polls predict a win by Barack Obama, but McCainophiles have not given up. It looks like a tight election.

How can you impress friends and family with your predictive powers? It’s simple:

The Beer Test.

This test has nothing to do with Sarah Palin and Joe-Six-Pack. The Beer Test is simply this: who do you think the United States, as a nation, would rather enjoy a weekly beer with?

Think back to the past few elections. 1996: Clinton vs. Dole. Democrat President Clinton was in deep trouble at the time, and Dole was the much-respected Republican Senate Majority Leader. Nevertheless, Clinton won. Why? Apply the Beer Test. You’re in your neighborhood pub with the locals, your buds. In walks [choose one here] President Clinton/Bob Dole. Without Secret Service. No big deal. Who do you feel most comfortable with? Who is going to tell you the best jokes, the most riveting tales? Who isn’t going to look down on you for your foibles/your lifestyle/your car. Who won’t make you feel stupid? Easy peasy: it was Clinton.

OK, let’s look at 2000. Democrat Vice President Al Gore vs. Republican Texas Governor, son of last Republican President, George Bush. Bush had won a narrow victory over none other than John McCain for the Republican nomination. Gore sprung from an administration that was, despite Clinton’s problems, popular. Sure, you can say that irregularities in the Florida election gave Bush a lead of fewer than 1,000 votes and that Gore might have won if Florida had tabulated their votes accurately (some might say, honestly). Sure, you might think that Gore would have won if not for third-party candidate, consumer advocate Ralph Nader siphoning off progressive votes from a decisive Democrat win. Put all that intellectual folderol aside. Who would you rather knock back a beer with on a Thursday night? Then-uptight, righteous Gore, or used-to-be-a-sinner Bush? Stop thinking of what might have been…. It’s Bush.

Ready for 2004? Republican President Bush vs. Democrat John Kerry. Put down your horn-rimmed glasses. Don’t focus on a frightened, post 9/11 nation whipped into orange- and red-alert frenzy every other day. Don’t look to a shaken people hoping for safety and stability – not change. Beer. Think Beer. Kerry would have made us concentrate, dang it! Bush would have … uh, what was the question again?

The Beer Test and Obama vs. McCain

It was easier to use The Beer Test to predict the primaries. Hilary vs. Barack? Hilary might be uncomfortable downing a pint, so Barack. McCain vs. Huckabee/Romney/Paul/Thompson/Giuliani? Close, in some circumstances. But McCain stood out, most of the rest blended together by Beer-swigging criteria, except for Guiliani and he failed for the same Beer reason as Hilary.

Having trouble with this Beer pick myself, I tured to some Fall-Ball (Baseball) dads (no moms were there at that point) during a practice a few weeks ago. None of the dads had a strong Beer preference for either candidate. The analysis turned, therefore, to Vice Presidential picks. Surprisingly, NONE of the dads wanted to chat over a brewski with Sarah Palin. Several dads, however, would like to wind-up Joe Biden and would be willing to listen to whatever pub-thing he wished to say. But probably not over a beer. Biden, they all agreed, would be best with scotch.

My analysis? This is hard. Who would tell a great story? Both Obama and McCain, I think. Who do you feel most comfortable with? Who won’t make you feel stupid? Neither of these guys is a slap-’em-on-the-back good-ol’-boy. Neither might start out makeing anyone feel stupid. But McCain might get cranky and turn on his fellow pubster. Not nice. Who is going to tell you the best jokes, the most riveting tales? It’s a tie. Who isn’t going to look down on you for your foibles/your lifestyle/your car. Or, maybe, who won’t seem to look down on you…. McCain made a mean joke about a political opponent’s child – that’s a big no-no in soccer-mom land. And speaking of jokes, some of McCain’s are – well – awkward at best. Not good with Beer. It reminds me of his recent gaffe in Pennsylvania in which McCain said, “You know, I think you may have noticed that Senator Obama’s supporters have been saying some pretty nasty things about Western Pennsylvania lately and, you know, I couldn’t agree with them more.” Gosh, you know he didn’t mean it; you even felt bad for the guy. But not good to have to protectively wince in a bar having a beer.

So, the winner of the Beer test, my prediction for the next President of the United States of America is Barack Obama.

Cheers.

Ok so now with the recent financial crisis (which was caused by govts in the first place) – we now see governments all over the world falling over themselves to get some kind of ‘rescue plan’/bailout/stimulation package going.

“Cash thrown at economic woes” – Australia

“US to unveil $250bn UK-style banking bail-out”

US govt moves to start $700bn bailout

Sweeping bank bailouts unite Europe

If it is really the case that the government knows better than we the individuals do – then why are we even given any freedom at all? If you think it is the case that the government/democracy knows better than the market, then why don’t you support full blown central planning? I really think this is a glaring inconsistency in the thinking of anybody who believes in govt stimulation/management of the economy.

To me, it seems like trying to make any distinction between things that individuals should and should not be allowed to decide for themselves is going to end up being arbitrary. I really think that you can either have total freedom of choice (free markets, anarcho-capitalism, market anarchy – whatever you want to call it) or you can have government. There is no ‘in between’, since any govt involvement will inevitably expand over time.

Perhaps the real reason all these governments are falling over themselves to create bailout plans and “stimulate the market” is because they want to be seen to be doing something. Either this, or the people “in the club” (politicians + senior government employees like McCain, Paulson, Obama, Giuliani) want to just direct some cash to themselves and their friends. Take for example, Rudy Guiliani maneuvering his own legal firm to cash in on the bailout.

Can’t you see how much the politicians really do care for us?

Yesterday Barack Obama and John McCain spent some time together at Ground Zero commemorating the tragic day on September 11th, 2001, when Iraq Sadaam Hussein Bush’s incompetence Al-Qaeda attacked our great country.

The Naked Candidate was there, and we were able to pick up a little of their conversation. Enjoy:

OBAMA: Sarah Palin… Nice fuckin’ pick, gramps.

MCCAIN: Are you gonna cry because your 15 minutes are just about up?

OBAMA: You know, you shoulda consulted with me first – I know a lady that would’ve been the perfect pick – Jessie Crapola – runs the snow-cone stand in Monowi, Nebraska.

MCCAIN: Where?

OBAMA: Exactly.

MCCAIN: Listen, pretty boy, if you think Palin doesn’t have experience, think again.

OBAMA: You do realize that back in October 2007, when you were running against that guinea Guiliani and that car salesman Mitt Romney, you said, and I quote: “I have had a strong and a long relationship on national security… I am prepared. I am prepared. I need no on-the-job training. I wasn’t mayor for a short period of time. I wasn’t governor for a short period of time.” *

MCCAIN: And do you realize that back in 2005, you said, and I quote: “I’m a flammin’ homo.”

OBAMA: I never said that.

MCCAIN: Did too.

OBAMA: Sarah Palin was mayor for less time than Guiliani, and she was governor for less time than Romney. And now this 180?

MCCAIN: Homo.

OBAMA: Listen, we need to stop all this nonsense. We need to focus on the issues that really matter.

MCCAIN: Like the fact that my running mate has a vagina and yours doesn’t?

OBAMA: Not what I had in mind.

MCCAIN: Look, you’re going down.

OBAMA: All I’m saying is – we should be discussing the economy, national security, energy strategies – not blasting ads all over the country calling me a pedophile for wanting to protect Kindergartners from sexual assault. Not blasting ads calling us sexist because Biden questions Palin’s ability to run a country. Not ads discussing lipstick on a pig.

MCCAIN: You’re the one that called her a pig.

OBAMA: I wasn’t referring to her. And you know what – you used the exact same phrase when discussing Hillary several months ago.

MCCAIN: Yeah, but Hillary is a pig.

OBAMA: Alright, gramps. Nice talkin’ to you.

MCCAIN: Homo.

AS OBAMA WALKS OFF, HE TURNS TO ADD…

OBAMA: Hey, by the way, I heard you learned how to send an email the other day, Johnny. Nice job.

MCCAIN: Homo.

OBAMA: Keep up the good work. You’re chalk full of integrity.

MCCAIN: Pretty boy.

OBAMA: Isn’t it your nap time or something?

OBAMA HEADS OFF. AND AS MCCAIN FLIPS THE BIRD TO OBAMA’S BACK, WE…

FADE OUT.

There was a whole lot to digest (and even more to regurgitate) from the Republican National Convention, and I think its gonna take me a while to process it all. In particular, the shameless derision toward community organizing by both Rudy Guiliani and Sarah Palin left the distinctive alkaline taste of bile in my mouth. Not because it belittled the resume of my candidate of choice but because it trivialized the accomplishments and ambitions of one of the most fundamentally American practices. Community organizing has always been what forces the hand of government to enact the change and progress that politicians and lawmakers will later tout as their own. Its the last and most important step of our system of checks and balances.

In an urgent letter to supporters, Barack Obama’s campaign manager David Plouffe reminds us that..

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

…Throughout our history, ordinary people have made good on America’s promise by organizing for change from the bottom up. Community organizing is the foundation of the civil rights movement, the women’s suffrage movement, labor rights, and the 40 hour workweek. And its happening today at church basements and community centers and living rooms across America.”

So if Republicans really want to emasculate the relevance and potency of community organizing, they do so out of arrogance and in contempt for history and the people they claim to represent. This is a far more incriminating example of out-of-touch elitism than lattes and arugula. I’ve always found Barack Obama’s early experiences as a a community organizer one of the more genuine and appealing components of most political resumes. It’s not a glorified job, its motivations are akin to the altruism of teachers and social workers and as far as I’m concerned should be at the bedrock of all political careers. Oh yeah, and as a fun exercise of mental imagery try to imagine Sarah Palin as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago.

L.Arnell

p.s. Big ups to WordPress.com! Politico’s Ben Smith linked to a wordpress blog created in opposition to the Republican affront on community organizers (the link also has taken up residence in our blogroll).

L.Arnell

Update: Over at the Ill Doctrine (look to the blogroll) Jay Smooth’s one-breath soliloquy, as always, cinches it up pretty well..

The difference between a community organizer and a politician is that community organizers are the ones who take the responsibility upon themselves to help their fellow citizens without the benefit of a government budget behind them, and go out there every day doing the hard, thankless work to make this country livable. Which is what allows you politicians to be able to go on t.v.. and brag about how this is the best country in the world, and for you to go on that t.v. show and spit in those people’s faces for the sake of a rhetorical flourish, is disgusting!”

And of course, the guy who’s trying to organize the American community Barack Hussein Obama.
If you are not happy with the way the GOP has chosen to attack the best people in our neighborhoods, schools and cities…please DONATE TODAY!

Tell the nasties at the GOP, you’re done with the same old stuff. If you don’t have money or a job – or even if you do… sign up to help make calls, talk to people – get a taste of community organizing yourself. Go to the site now. The campaign makes it easy as pie to get involved – and to organize your community.

Once you start it’s hard to stop. Not only is it the right thing to do, it feels amazing to connect your life with the lives of people around you to make the changes you all want and need to see. All you need to be is open and willing to help. THIS is what Obama is talking about when he says “be the change you want to see in the world.” That’s how Gandhi put it – and you know how much responsibility he handled.

And what’s this business about “We are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” I don’t know why those in the Grand OLD Party have such a hard time understanding that concept. It seems to jibe pretty well with that whole ‘responsibility’ thing, you flap your jaws about all the time. Then again, I’ve noticed these GOP speech writers don’t use language like normal people.

They turn good things to salt, and poison into profit.

You know what Miss Tubman said:

If you hear the dogs, keep going.

If you see the torches in the woods, keep going.

If they’re shouting after you, keep going.

Don’t ever stop. Keep going.

If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.

Even in the darkest of moments, ordinary Americans have found the faith to keep going.

Thanks for the reminder Hilary. And thanks for organizing those 18 million cracks!

And Rudy… I can’t find a community in NYC that liked ya, sure as hell not the firemen.

What would you know about community organizing in the first place?

Not a damn thing.

And Sarah, just because you ain’t gettin’ paid, doesn’t mean you don’t have any ‘responsibility.’

After I graduated from UC Berkeley I spent four years teaching adults with disabilities how to use technology. My guess is you would have slashed that program, like you did in your state.

Like someone in a video above said,

Jesus was a community organizer, Pontius Pilate, George W. Bush and Sarah Palin are governors.

And don’t get it twisted. Barack never compared himself to Jesus.

You just stepped in a giant national moose pie of your own making. As YOU said being the Mayor of Wasilla population 5000+ voted in by about 600 people - It’s not rocket science.

Don’t miss Obama’s response!

The 911 film at the RNC was used as propaganda to scare you; a base and shameless fear appeal. Country First. This slogan is designed to guilt you into questioning the wisdom of any US military action. To be against spending 10 billion a month in Iraq is considered un-Amercian. To argue that terrorism is an ideology, not a nation, and therefore very difficult to fight, is somehow a threatening idea. Here’s a Big Idea: We need to win the war of ideas.

Putting people first, now that’s a big idea Mr. Romney. Why not spend those billions domestically to help struggling Americans, to invest in education, health care, renewable energy, a crumbling highway infrastructure, conservation measures, support for the arts. Oh, but that would be putting country second. How dare we invest money at home. What was I thinking! Bring the troops home? Not a chance. Not until victory is ours, even if it takes a 100 years! There Sarah Palin, I said it – victory.

Last night MITT said it was “time for the party of big ideas, not the party of Big Brother.” Consider the slogans from Orwell’s masterpiece, 1984 – War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength. Right out of the Republican playbook. Country First. USA, USA, USA. Service. Leave the thinking to Big Brother. Obey and Be Happy.

Guiliani talks about Obama’s voting present (neither yes, nor no) 130 times in the Illinois Senate. And yet Mcain failed to vote at all on legislation providing tax credits for solar and wind investments, known as the renewable energy bill. He missed all eight votes on this legislation. See article Eight Strikes and You’re Out

McCain also was a No show (he didn’t vote at all) on the equal pay for equal work legislation – while 6 of his Republican colleagues voted Yes. Some maverick.

And with all this talk about drilling, let’s get one thing straight: we can reduce our dependency on oil by using less, not drilling more. Ride a Bike. USA USA USA.
