The piece, Exposición N° 1 by Guillermo  “Habacuc” Vargas, took place at the Códice Gallery in Managua, Nicaragua in 2007. Habacuc hired two kids to capture a dog on the street which he used for this piece by tying it up in the gallery. He used dog food to write the words “Eres lo que lees” (you are what you read). The exposition included the burning of 175 pieces of crack cocaine and an ounce of marijuana while the Sandinista anthem played backwards.^(wikipedia) 

The sensation: It is rumored that the dog starved to death. The gallery states the dog was only tied up for a three hour period and that he eventually ran away. Vargas refuses to comment on the fate of the dog, but states no one tried to free him. He has signed a petition against himself along with 4 million other people to ban him from repeating the piece in the 2008 Centro-American Biennial of Art.

Natividad Canda, a close friend of the artist, was killed by two Rottweilers after trespassingon private property. Natividad was a very well known addict in the area. The attack was captured on film by a local News Channel while Police stood by without intervening. (tico times)

There are also statements where he talks about the state of dogs in Central America. They run wild without food and water, no more loved than rats by some. It’s a large problem. He has commented that no one cares if these dogs live or die on the streets but when you bring them into a gallery then the focus shifts.

A friend of mine sent me the petition, which lead me to do the research and at the end of the day I back the artist. I understand his intentions, as sensational as it is. I’m extremely disappointed but not surprised by the ignorance in the responses on youtube and on blogs. It seems very few people are interested in finding out what really happened or the meaning of the piece.

There a grief that comes from knowing that this kind of work deepens the chasm that already stands between the contemporary artist and the viewer. Which is ironic since the driving force of contemporary artists is a critical look at society from a perspective that calls us to question the modernist experience. For me, it is more disheartening to know that Officers of the Law and Journalists could witness a man bleed to death as dogs attacked him.

There has been an outpouring of anger and hostility toward the artist and the piece. The video responses on youtube are often times hostile and deeply uninformed – a lethal combination. Sentimental music is placed against images of the dog and adjectives such as ”poor” dog and “stupid” artist reoccur.

The concept of what an artist is or what an artist is supposed to be is critiqued by the uninformed who do not seem to want to become informed. They do not realize that the sensation that they are creating is A PART of the piece and validates the social curiosities of the artist. I think this is more sad than the death of the dog.

I strongly encourage you to comment. I will not deny any point of view on this topic from being displayed with this post.

Der er indsamlet over 1 million underskrifter, for at få ham stoppet. Han har modtaget mange dødstrusler. Der er lavet en Facebook gruppe, der har til formål at stoppe ham og her findes der også masser af dødstrusler og ønske om, at kunstneren skal dø.

Der er selvfølgelig tale om Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, den 32 årige kunstner fra Costa Rica, der udstillede en døende hund. Udstillingen hed “Eres Lo Que Lees” (“Du er hvad du læser”).

Ifølge Guillermo, er udstillingen lavet for at vise en pointe.

“I min hjemby San Jose i Costa Rica, dør der hvert år titusinder af herreløse hunde af sygdomme, men ingen er interesseret i at hjælpe dem. Så snart man udstiller et af disse sultede væsener, så kommer det hykleriske frem i os alle,” forklarer Guillermo.

Guillermo forstætter, “Nativity (hunden) er et meget sygt dyr, og ville dø på gaden alligevel.”

Direktøren for galleriet, Juanita Bermúdez, insisterede på at hunden skulle løslades efter blot én dag.

“Den var løsladt hele tiden, undtaget i de tre timer, som udstillingen varerede og den fik mad jævnligt med hundemad, som Guillermo selv kom med,” siger Juanita til den engelske avis, “The Guardian”.

Mas ele queria que as pessoas abrissem o bico para poder lhes apontar o dedo. Se ele realmente pensasse a arte como uma maneira de atingir (em todas as conotações) as pessoas, teria sido uma maneira bem mais refinada esta de encher o cusco de comida.

Ou se soltasse o cão em determinado ponto, forjaria um happy end deixando mais sinuosa tal hipocrisia.

E da obra poderíamos tirar uma lição ainda, de uma imagem (de um miserável, seja animal ou gente) que gera sentimentos nobres nos observadores exibida na vida real, que mostra que se não poderia ver beleza alguma nesta gravidade.Mas o discurso dele é bem claro, ele quer mostrar a hipocrisia das pessoas. Então me parece que o escopo dele é polêmica mesmo. É a polêmica da qual poderíamos criar até uma modalidade ou corrente de arte, de tantas obras que – nascidas de idéias até boas – desvirtuaram-se em busca do caminho mais polêmico, mais gratuito, mais auto-promocional. E que subestima os iniciados sem nem mesmo incluir os leigos. E de polêmica nada necessário nos dias de hoje. E por mais que todos colaborem com a obra ao falar dela, este processo não é novidade nenhuma. Ele por si só é apenas um método, já antigo, e por si só não tem mérito nenhum (para quem quiser dizer que a obra dele não foi compreendida em sua totalidade de fazer a sociedade se refletir (isso todos as coisas fazem a todo momento)). E a polêmica por si só é retrograda, é uma coisa de quarentas anos atrás.

Abaixo o Hababaca, por tirar uma vida assim por auto-promoção ou por não se esforçar numa linguagem mais sofisticada e mais marcante. Todavia sem grandes vivas para as campanhas contra ele, pois devo concordar nalguns pontos com este rapaz aqui.

Porém a piedade é instintiva, é quase uma dor física (e talvez aja fisicamente, numa esfera muito menos visível, em patamares infinitesimais, mas fisicamente, pelo fato de não se poder evitar, mas somente resistir, naquilo que se chama espírito ou equivalente, e por isso tudo doa conforme a resistência de cada um).

O que dá força a piedade é a indefensão das vítimas. E a dos animais (julgamos nós, ao menos, e com boas constatações científicas a respeito) vai além, abarca até a consciência.

A nossa compaixão no seu estado mais intenso é pela ignorância do animal. Pela forma abstrata com que ele sente, sem saber o porquê, ou mesmo de porquês – e na abstração as coisas são puras. Ele ignora. Sofre tão somente.

É como a ignorância do boi velho, do cavalo morto.

E por isso tudo eu sinto pena, grande pena, mesmo que seja desse recorte específico.

Se lançarmos um olhar isento (não sei bem de quê) sobre isso, talvez a pena não valha a pena. E de longe nada vale mesmo. A morte é comum, bem comum, e a crueldade também. De longe, até se fosse com a nossa mãe, amor da vida etc, em nenhum caso caberia piedade alguma, se ampliarmos o mesmo raciocínio que nos levaria a não se tocar pelo cão (se formos isentos – não sei bem de quê – em tudo). E a arte às vezes necessita também desta visão, deste plano geral frio, um ponto de vista de deuses, de desprezo pela vida (o politicamente correto, ou só o correto, não pode delimitar o terreno da criatividade, das constatações).

Então isso é arte, mas arte ruim (não má, não falo disso), pobre, de linguagem pobre (a reflexão boa gerada pela obra é mérito de quem a pensa e não está no sistema criado pelo artista, por mais que quem o defenda supervalorize sua dimensão extra-galeria (novidade nenhuma, como dissera)).

Mas por mais que se tente ver com uma mão na cabeça, a outra fica no coração.

Guillermo Habacuc Vargas (an artist from Costa Rica) had the nerve to put a starving, thirsty puppy, tied up on a small rope, inside the BienArte 2007 in Costa Rica ( Bienal of visual arts in Costa Rica), and called it a form of art. He prohibited anyone to feed or give it some  water. The puppy soon died. The name of the exposition was ” You are what you read” and it was written in dog food on the wall right next to the starving dog.

How can anyone use the name ART for such an inhuman atrocity!!!! Please if you’re also wondering you should sign a petition that will stop him from representing Costa Rica in the next “Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008″. Here is where you can go to sign it:

The story of a dog being starved to death as part of an art exhibition appears to have been falsely reported by Costa Rican newspaper The Nation, according to new sources. I reported the appalling story here last week among global outrage about the exhibit and a reported invitation to repeat the work elsewhere.

It has now emerged, however, that artist Guillermo Habacuc Vargas intended the work to be a stunt to show how a starving dog suddenly becomes the centre of attention when it is in a gallery, but not when it is on the street. The work was intended to expose people for what they really are – “hyprocritical sheep”. He said that in order for the work to be valid, he and the gallery had to give the impression that the dog was genuinely starving to death and that it died.

Pope Benedict XVI was 100 percent correct when he recently stood up for the sanctity of every human life, born and unborn, during the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium.  Any society that can cavalierly destroy God’s precious gift is contrary to our nature, and as such, a society that fails to respect human life is a sick society.

Fortunately, the strength of America’s pro-life movement, as evidenced by the spontaneous applause Benedict received at Yankee Stadium after defending the unborn as well as the success of pro-life candidates at the national level, gives me hope that all is not lost for our country.  That said, much work needs to be done.  Western Civilization is ill in terms of respecting life.

At a time when western civilization devalues life, this act of cruelty exhibited by Guillermo Vargas in his now-infamous “art” exhibit is hardly surprising.  In fact, it is symptomatic of a sick culture.  For those of you unfamiliar with what this scumbag did, Vargas tethered a dog, Natividad, to a wall and starved it to death while a bunch of voyeuristic freaks oohed and aahed.  Nicaraguan authorities, rather than being outraged, classified the cruelty as “art.”

Indefensible acts are often described as art.  In this sense, Vargas’ cruelty is nothing new.  However, this is an example that some in the art world are regressing from offensive to evil.  When hearing about incidents like this one, I am outraged, but I’m also glad that we have had popes like John Paul II and Benedict XVI.  In fact, I’m hopeful that they arrived just in the nick of time.

ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΗ : ΤO POST ΣΥΝΕΧΙΖΕΙ ΜΕ ΤΗΝ ΛΟΓΙΚΗ ΟΤΙ Ο ΣΚΥΛΟΣ ΠΕΘΑΝΕ, ΠΡΑΓΜΑ ΠΟΥ ΔΕΝ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΣΙΓΟΥΡΟ.

Ο Vargas είναι Κοσταρικανός. Με μία σύντομη επίσκεψη στο Wikipedia, μαθαίνουμε ότι η Κοστα Ρίκα έχει αυξανόμενη οικονομία, δημοκρατικό πολίτευμα, δηλαδή δεν είναι κλασικη λατινοαμερικάνικη χώρα (Ακόμα είναι χαμηλά αλλα ανεβαίνει). Η πρώτη υπεράσπιση του Vargas ήταν ότι ήταν ένας συμβολισμός για την χώρα που την έχουν αφήσει σαν τον σκύλο. ΔΕΚΤΟ. Ωραίος συμβολισμός. Προσωπική Άποψη, ο σκύλος έτσι κ αλλιώς λογικά θα πέθαινε, αδέσποτο ήταν.

Δεύτερη δικαιολογία ήταν ότι ο σκοπός ήταν να ευαισθητοποιηθεί ο κόσμος για τα αδέσποτα. Μη δεκτό.
Εκεί φαίνεται ο καλλιτέχνης που κάνει κάτι ακραίο για να δειχτεί. Από την στιγμή που το έργο του ευαισθητοποιεί για τα ζώα, δεν αφήνει ένα ζώο να πεθάνει. Εκτός αμα πάσχει από κυκλοθυμία ή διχασμένη προσωπικότητα, εγώ όμως βλέπω ότι πάσχει από το σύνδρομο Britney Spears, τα πάντα για να με θυμηθεί το Mtv.

Η δικαιολογία άλλαξε αρκετές φορές, αυτο με κάνει να νομίζω ότι πραγματικά έγινε λόγω του Συνδρόμου Britney Spears, και εντάξει του τύπου του αξίζει μια καλή μούντζα, και ένα κλύσμα με θειικό οξύ (Η μήπως ένα μπράβο για τα λεφτά που έβγαλε?). Από την άλλη επειδή ο καθένας τα προβάλλει όπως θέλει στο ίντερνετς ίσως η πρώτη δικαιολογία ήταν αυτή που δόθηκε, και εγω σαν πολίτης χώρας με δημοκρατικό πολίτευμα (λέμε τώρα..) λέω ότι τον υποστηρίζω, άξιζε να χαθεί ο σκύλος για τον συμβολισμό αυτό. Γιατί οι ίδιοι που υπογράφουν το petition ξεχνάνε ότι υπάρχουν άνθρωποι που πεθαίνουν από την πείνα, και ασχολούνται με τον σκύλο που έτσι και αλλιώς αδέσποτο ήταν.

Στο κάτω κάτω της γραφής ό σκύλος λογικά δεν πέθανε. Και ναί μην μου βάζετε όλοι την τέχνη σε εισαγωγικά, ξαφνικά ευαισθητοποιηθήκατε όλοι για τον σκύλο αυτό, αλλά χεστήκατε για την πατημένη γάτα στον δρόμο, για τα αμέτρητα αδέσποτα της πόλης.

Nel 2007, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc prese un cane di strada, lo legò con una corda corta ad un muro di una galleria d’arte e poi lo lasciò morire di fame e di sete. Per parecchi giorni, l’autore  e i visitatori della galleria d’arte sono stati spettatori dell’agonia del povero animale, morto dopo un doloroso e assurdo  calvario.

O artista Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas foi escolhido para representar a Costa Rica na Bienal Centroamericana Honduras 2008.

No entanto, há petições e inúmeras mensagens de repúdio a esta escolha e ao artista circulando na internet. O motivo: uma instalação de arte montada por ele usava um cão de rua, faminto e doente, preso a uma corda. O animal morreu por inanição e falta de cuidados veterinários.

O fato ocorreu em agosto durante uma exposição em Manágua, Nicarágua, de acordo com o diário local “La Prensa”. Vargas declarou ao jornal “Nación” da Costa Rica que se reserva o direito de não dizer se acha justificável a morte do animal. “O que me importa é a hipocrisia das pessoas. Um animal assim vira o centro das atenções quando está em um local onde as pessoas querem ver arte, mas ninguém ligaria se ele estivesse passando fome nas ruas,” afirmou.

Ele ainda disse que sua intenção era homenagear Natividad Canda, um nicaragüense morto por cães rottweiller.

Proprio poco fa mi sono imbattuta in una notizia, per la verità vecchia di qualche mese, secondo cui Guillermo Habacuc Vargas, artista cinquantenne del Costa Rica, avrebbe (per finta o per davvero) fatto morire di fame  un cane nella sua ormai tristemente nota performance “Eres lo que lees” (“Sei quello che leggi”). 

Il mio “viaggio” parte da quando approdo ad una pagina strana nel senso che un Blog CHIUSO da mesi si trovi nelle condizioni di fare un appello di “cessate il fuoco” sull’argomento in maniera piuttosto… frustrata. Mi incuriosisco, e mi rendo subito conto che le incerte sorti di quel cane (Navidad) aveva scosso un bel maremoto. 
Per capirci provate a cercare Guillermo Habacuc Vargas o Eres lo que lees su Google e ve ne renderete conto anche voi (Diventa una ricerca al tesoro anche solo cercare la biografia dell’artista!

Premesso che non posso sapere come siano andate le cose, qualcosa però mi dice che “Il Disinformatico” ci abbia visto giusto:

“Come ben sappiamo, qualsiasi storia di maltrattamento di animali, vera o falsa, fa perdere il lume della ragione a tanta gente e risveglia nei giornalisti la voglia di scoop che riempie intere pagine con poca fatica. La voglia di credere al luogo comune dell’artista moderno incomprensibile e insensibile, combinata col fatto che gli avvenimenti hanno avuto luogo in un paese lontano e “primitivo”, ha fatto il resto. In sintesi, la storia funziona perché gioca sui nostri luoghi comuni: gli artisti moderni sono indecifrabili e farebbero qualsiasi cosa in nome della cosiddetta “arte”; i visitatori di queste mostre sono snob insensibili; i paesi latinoamericani sono rozzi e primitivi; la gente è crudele con gli animali e nessuno fa nulla per fermarli. Ma paradossalmente funziona anche su un altro livello: ha dimostrato pienamente la tesi di Vargas, ossia che la gente è ipocrita. Con pochissime, nobili eccezioni, s’indigna e si mobilita per un animale messo in mostra a morire (apparentemente) di stenti, mentre fa finta di nulla quando incrocia la stessa creatura per strada.”

Acabo de leer en el Foro de Maestr@s una horrible noticia que me ha dejado helada:

“En el año 2007, Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, un supuesto artista, cogió a un perro abandonado de la calle, lo ató a una cuerda cortísima en la pared de una galería de arte y lo dejó allí para que muriera lentamente de hambre y sed. Durante varios días, tanto el autor de semejante crueldad como los visitantes de la galería de arte presenciaron impasibles la agonía del pobre animal, hasta que finalmente murió de inanición, seguramente tras haber pasado por un doloroso, absurdo e incomprensible calvario.

¿Te parece fuerte?

Pues eso no es todo: la prestigiosa Bienal Centroamericana de Arte decidió, incomprensiblemente, que la salvajada que acababa de cometer este sujeto era arte, y de este modo tan incomprensible Guillermo Vargas Habacuc ha sido invitado a repetir su cruel acción en dicha Bienal en 2008.

¡¡IMPIDÁMOSLO!!!

Es muy fácil, se tarda 10 segundos y es seguro, si perdemos el tiempo reenviando tonterías que nadie se cree, bien podemos dedicar un poco de ese tiempo a intentar evitar que otro animal inocente sufra la crueldad de este, y otros, sádico y repugnante ’ser humano’.

Pd: si pones el nombre del ‘artista’ en Google salen las fotos de este pobre animal, y seguramente también te saldrán páginas web donde podrás contrastarlo y ver que es verdad. Incluso circula un vídeo en youtube, pero os advierto de que es duro: Maldito maltratador“
