I’d like to say I don’t support what this artist does especially through his cruelty to animals but really he is just highlighting nature and natural impulses. I think his art is really quite potent.

This other piece by Guillermo Vargas also known as Habacuc is a piece where the artist has essentially tied a dog to the wall of an art gallery and left it to die. I find this act quite repulsive and frightening.

All of these pieces are terrifying in my opinion, but all do express the same themes of the work I am looking into, escape, and the impossibility of escape. Claustrophobia.

Guillermo Vargas Jiménez, más conocido por su pseudónimo Habacuc (al igual que el profeta hebreo, pese a que en su momento lo eligió simplemente porque “sonaba bonito” ya que no conocía su origen bíblico), es sin duda uno de los artistas más cuestionados del momento. Nacido en la ciudad de San José de Costa Rica el 18 de septiembre de 1975, en la actualidad vive en la localidad de Cartago donde desarrolla su carrera artística en base a una formación completamente autodidacta ya que pese a estudiar Docencia de Educación Especial en la UICR, nunca terminó la carrera. Sus obras son una mezcla de fotografía, vídeo, pintura, graffiti, música y otros elementos que le permiten crear instalaciones en las que expresa sus más diversas preocupaciones. Desde que en 1997 expusiese por primera vez en la Galería Cultura de San José, sus trabajos han estado vinculados principalmente a cuestiones institucionales dentro del mundo del arte, al revisar y cuestionar las figuras del artista, el galerista, el curador y el coleccionista. Además Habacuc está interesado en poner en evidencia las relaciones de poder que tienen lugar en el campo político y social tomando el relevo de escritores, poetas y ensayistas como Carlos Martínez Rivas, Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard, Emmanuel Lévinas, Jean-François Lyotard, Michel Foucault o Charles Bukowski, a los que habitualmente lee.

La trayectoria artística de Habacuc  destaca por la efectividad, coherencia e implicaciones éticas de sus propuestas en importantes muestras dentro y fuera de su país que le han convertido en el artista costarricense más conocido a nivel mundial: además de exponer en la Galería Jacob Karpio de Costa Rica ha participado colectivamente en reiteradas muestras tanto en Costa Rica como en el extranjero. En 2002 y 2005 estuvo presente en la feria internacional ARCO de Madrid y en la Miami Art Fair. En 2003 su obra viajó al Armory Show de Nueva York, a la feria Art Basel en Miami y a Chicago. La feria de arte contemporáneo de México (MACO), acoge su obra en 2004 y en 2005 es seleccionado en la Bienal del Istmo Centroamericano en El Salvador recibiendo la primera mención por su trabajo Alfombra Roja. En 2007 su obra se expuso en la muestra colectiva Nuevas tendencias del arte costarricense en el Centro Cultural del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo en Washington D.C.

Pese a no tener afección por ningún artista en concreto, sino por obras sueltas, el crítico de arte Olivier Debroise y los curadores Virginia Pérez Ratton y Gerardo González lo ubican como un artista que sigue la línea marcada por creadores como Santiago Sierra, Oscar Bony, Barbara Kruger, Damien Hirst, Piero Manzoni o Teresa Margolles. Sin embargo Habacuc estima que más que seguir una línea es necesario considerar las necesidades y posibilidades de trabajar desde lógicas cercanas y accesibles por parte del autor. Prueba de ello es esta selección de sus principales trabajos realizados en el periodo 1994-2007:

INSTALACIÓN #1
Video-instalación en la que unas plantas reales eran supuestamente regadas por un sujeto proyectado en un vídeo en la pared. Al cabo de los días las plantas se secaban por la incapacidad de ser regadas, más allá de la ilusión que producía el video.

POLICÍA (Policía interviniendo una obra que hablaba sobre el abuso de autoridad)

Tras denunciar haber sufrido un abuso de autoridad en 1999, Habacuc presentó esta obra en un calabozo de la cárcel costarricense de Heredia, que empapeló con la denuncia que presentó tras dicho abuso. Al exponer el relato de la denuncia en el formato oficial que usa el Organismo de Investigación Judicial ésta terminó siendo un cuento en lenguaje jurídico que el espectador podía llevarse consigo, puesto que había múltiples copias apiladas a disposición del visitante. Sin embargo durante la semana que estuvo abierta la exposición en la cárcel, el jefe de la policía encargó a un agente para que terciara entre los espectadores y la obra sin el consentimiento del artista. El vídeo es de una de las veces en que el policía se interpuso, agregando un nuevo relato a esta historia de sucesivas traducciones.

CANJE DE ANILLO DE BODAS POR EL EQUIVALENTE EN DINERO A 3 CAJAS DE LECHEEl 14 de febrero, día de los enamorados, Habacuc presentó este trabajo, consistente en cambiarle a una asistenta del hogar su anillo de bodas por el equivalente en dinero a tres cajas de leche.

ALFOMBRA ROJA o 300 KILOS DE TOMATEInstalación presentada en 2006 para la V Bienal de Artes Visuales del Istmo Centroamericano, inaugurada por el entonces presidente de El Salvador Elías Antonio Saca (a quien se puede ver en la fotografía escuchando el himno nacional). Cientos de tomates formaban una alfombra que   serviría de camino de entrada para invitados y autoridades. Pese a que la instalación estaba pensada para colocarse en el exterior, la lluvia obligó al artista a trasladarla dentro del recinto. Aún así esta obra logró alzarse con la primera mención honorífica de esta bienal.

INTERVENCIÓNMediante un acto vandálico realizado con una piedra, el mensaje publicitario se subvierte contra sí mismo y contra la ambigüedad de su fotografía, pero a la vez se hace más literal su propio mensaje ¿Buscas profundidad?

HIMNOS
Himnos de todos los países de Centro América sonando al mismo tiempo dando lugar a un estruendo monstruoso. Se trata de una invitación a pensar en el sentido de pertenencia y en los iconos nacionalistas no sólo en términos espaciales sino también temporales. El artista español Santiago Sierra realizó una obra muy similar al instalar, en el cabildo de Montevideo unos grandes altavoces negros, que reprodujeron, simultánea y continuadamente, los himnos de Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay y Uruguay. 

RÓTULOS
Esta pieza fue instalada en la entrada de la Facultad de Artes y Letras de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Desde la calle podemos leer las palabras Lame Culos, mientras que desde el interior de la institución se puede leer la palabra Encomiástico. En realidad ambos términos son sinónimos (usados en lenguaje coloquial y culto respectivamente), empleados para definir a una persona excesivamente elogiosa, laudatoria o ensalzadora.

COREOGRAFÍA
El Taller Nacional de Danza- Conservatorio El Barco, con el patrocinio del Centro Cultural de España, organizan el programa NoSilicona, coordinado por el bailarín Diego Álvarez y dirigido por el coreógrafo Jimmy Ortiz. Este programa organiza mensualmente un espectáculo o proceso artístico que promueve e incentiva la investigación escénica en la creación artística dirigida a jóvenes creadores de las artes escénicas que no tienen un espacio de visualización dentro del circuito de los teatros de Costa Rica, para lo cual facilita un espacio para ensayar durante un mes, además de los recursos técnicos, tecnológicos y logísticos para llevar a cabo el espectáculo o propuesta.
En este marco, y tras ser invitado a participar, Habacuc ideó un proyecto consistente en la experimentación de la danza en un formato digital que llevó a cabo en el Teatro Montes de Oca (en el edificio Saprissa de la Universidad de Costa Rica). Para ello se valió de un ordenador con conexión a internet, un proyector de vídeo y unos altavoces, además de una tarjeta de débito internacional con $200 para contratar un servicio de sexo interactivo por web cam durante la función que se encargó de inmortalizar el fotógrafo Roberto Feigenblatt. En este caso el cliente/artista es el que dirige los movimientos del bailarín o bailarina con el fin de crear una estructura coreográfica que sirva de detonante para hablar de ética y relaciones de poder. La idea pasaba por interpretar y reorientar este ready made contemporáneo para cuestionar la idea de lo virtual mediante la exposición de la crudeza de las relaciones que se dan en internet.Probablemente el efectismo de esta obra provenga principalmente de la descontextualización, al emplear un espacio institucional de la danza costarricense repleto de gente como un espacio adecuado para llevar al ámbito artístico un acto “intimo” como es el consumo de pornografía. Sin embargo, esta descontextualización ayuda al mismo tiempo a dotar a la función de un matiz más cercano al arte, al otorgarle una temática, un estilo y una estética propios del centro en el que la acción se desarrolla. El ser humano siempre ha tenido la necesidad de que las cosas “se vean mejor”, lo que se logra a través de la estética, la cual es simplemente un maquillaje de unas necesidades básicas que tiene el ser humano. Si aplicamos la estética a otros productos de la civilización vemos cómo esta pierde su significado y cae por sí misma descubriendo los fundamentos mismos de la sociedad, demostrando que la morbosidad/moralidad es tan sólo una máscara para ver de frente sin que nos vean el rostro. Esta obra de Habacuc pretende mostrar qué pasa cuando el sexo (como acto de supervivencia) es distosionado por el arte (entendido como producto último de la civilización) sin las máscaras y artificios que sostienen el andamiaje mismo de la sociedad.

PAUSA, INFILTRACIÓN TELEVISIVA
Pausa, Infiltración Televisiva, fue un proyecto que formó parte de la curaduría Im_polis… (lugar de relación), desarrollada dentro del marco del Festival Internacional de Artes Electrónicas y Video (Transitio Mx 02) durante los días 12- 20 de octubre de 2007. Habacuc fue invitado, junto a 11 artistas más a crear una obra de video de 20 segundos que se transmitiría dos veces al día por el canal mexicano Televisa. Los videos fueron infiltrados en el canal, sin el menor aviso y sin crédito alguno, y se proyectaron durante programas informativos o de debate. La manera en que la obra se infiltraba en el espacio mediático televisivo, pretendía generar una reflexión acerca de las implicaciones del “medio” en un contexto determinado y al mismo tiempo provocar un desbordamiento de las estructuras inmanentes al mismo.

Sin embargo, en la carrera artística de Habacuc encontramos  un antes y un después de la brutalidad de su primera muestra individual realizada en la Galería Códice de Managua en Nicaragua. Esta llamada Exposición #1 es el resultado de un proceso creativo que le llevó varios años trabajando. La exposición se compuso de seis elementos:

• Documentación fotográfica de la obra Alfombra Roja puesto que esta fue manipulada por los guardaespaldas del presidente de El Salvador, por temor a que los tomates fueran usados en contra suya.
• Texto escrito con comida para perro en el que se puede leer la frase Eres lo que Lees
• Un perro callejero atado a una cuerda en la esquina de la galería. Se dice (aunque Habacuc lo ha negado) que el artista pagó a unos niños para que atrapasen al perro en uno de los barrios más pobres de Managua.  Se trataba de un animal renqueante, enfermo, hambriento y demacrado  al que Habacuc llamó cariñosamente Natividad. No le dio ni de comer ni de beber y el perro murió de hambre y sed unos días después de la apertura de la muestra.
• Un incensario en el que se quemaba “incienso” (en realidad, el día de la inauguración, lo que se quemó en él fueron 175 piedras de crack y una onza de marihuana). También se dice que en esta olla quemaron plástico y otros productos químicos.
• Durante toda la exposición sonó el Himno Sandinista reproducido al revés. Puesto que la exposición no contaba con fichitas ni letreros museográficos que indicasen qué era cada obra, mientras la música sonaba poco a poco la gente iba reconociendo el ritmo y preguntaban si ese acaso era el himno del Frente Sandinista.
• Por último, como veremos posteriormente, Habacuc integró como parte esencial de su obra la utilización de los medios de comunicación masiva: prensa escrita, internet, medios de información televisivos…

Este proyecto partió del hecho ocurrido el 11 de noviembre de 2005 en la provincia de Cartago, Costa Rica, en el cual un adicto indigente nicaragüense de 25 años llamado Natividad Canda Mairena fue atacado y devorado por Hunter y Oso, dos perros rottweiler, mientras intentaba robar en un taller. Tras ser arrastrado 25 metros por los perros, recibir más de 200 mordiscos por todo el cuerpo durante más de 2 horas y sufrir desgarros en los codos hasta llegar a dejar los huesos expuestos, Natividad fue ingresado en el hospital Max Peralta de Cartago, donde falleció minutos después. La policía que trató de ayudar al indigente alegó que no dispararon a los perros porque temían poder herir a Canda, pero que realizaron hasta seis disparos al aire, para asustarlos, lo cual sólo les enfureció más por lo que continuaron ensañándose con su pobre víctima. Sólo lograron liberar a Natividad cuando el jefe de bomberos de Cartago apuntó a los perros con una manguera de agua a presión, mientras los servicios médicos atendían al moribundo que sólo acertó a decir “échenme algo encima, tengo frío”. Según Habacuc, lo que en realidad sucedió fue que la policía y los bomberos incumplieron su deber de socorro, ya que se limitaron a presenciar cómo Natividad era devorado por los perros mientras los medios cubrían la noticia de forma repugnantemente amarillista. El propósito de esta exposición no fue, como se ha llegado a decir, un acto de venganza contra los perros, sino que era mucho más profundo: mediante elementos metafóricamente ilustrativos del contexto se pretende llevar a un espacio artístico unas sensaciones, comportamientos y reacciones similares a lo ocurrido con Natividad Canda. Estas reacciones nos hablarán de nuestra condición de humanos, con todas las implicaciones y repercusiones que ello conlleva.

Recojo lo que miro… El perro está más vivo que nunca porque sigue dando que hablar.

A pesar de que Juanita Bermúdez, directora de la Galería Códice emitió un comunicado y comentó en el periódico The Observer que el perro fue alimentado regularmente y que estuvo suelto todo el tiempo en un patio interior salvo las 3 horas que duró la muestra, pero que misteriosamente escapó tres días después, lo cierto es que bajo su absoluta responsabilidad, Habacuc sostiene que su idea o su verdadera intención, era la de dejar morir al perro de hambre (tal y como asegura en una entrevista concedida a radio Caracol). Lo que para muchos representa una aberración, un acto terrible, brutal y cínico para él quizás representa sencillamente una acción correcta y responsable con el propósito de abordar temas como la indiferencia, la indolencia, la apatía o el ingenuismo salvaje de la gente. Para ello es necesario el tocar los bordes de la conciencia, los límites más sensitivos y sensibles del arte, las fronteras más peligrosas. En este sentido, muchos han pretendido comparar esta obra con el canibalismo de Zhu Yu, con el arte transgénico del brasileño Eduardo Kac  o con el video de 53 minutos de Jordi Benito, en la que se presencia la muerte a martillazos de una vaca. Sin embargo, me resulta particularmente acertado el paralelismo que el artista plástico venezolano Franklin Fernández realiza entre Habacuc y Kevin Carter, autor de aquella inquietante imagen de una niña sudanesa famélica tras la cual se encontraba un buitre al acecho por la que fue tremendamente criticado tras ganar el premio Pulitzer de 1994 para suicidarse poco tiempo después. Tanto Natividad Canda como esa fotografía pueden decirnos algo sobre la ética y la conciencia de las personas. ¿No será el perro la imagen más cercana, precisa y justa de lo que ignoramos? ¿Cuántas veces no hemos visto atropellar a un perro en la calle y nadie dice nada? ¿A cuántos perros no los hemos visto pasar hambre o frío y nadie los recoge? Habacuc nos propone abrir un poco más los ojos, ampliar nuestra sensibilidad y expandir nuestra conciencia a la sociedad, pero más aún a la humanidad que hay en cada uno de nosotros. Y lo hace a través del arte.  Si Eres lo que Lees, eres lo que ves, lo que percibes, lo que sientes, eres lo que haces… y si eres lo que haces, eres lo que piensas.

A pesar de que esta exposición no buscaba el ruido mediático, es obvio que una creación ética y estética de esta índole genera diversas manifestaciones entre sus espectadores (reales y virtuales) que van desde el rechazo más absoluto hasta la aversión, la aceptación o la reflexión. A pesar de que la obra pretendía fomentar una discusión socio-política, lo cierto es que en vez de fomentar el debate, sumió al público en el sentimentalismo, desarticulando cualquier acción madura e incitando respuestas viscerales. Efectivamente, aunque la noticia no tuvo en un principio casi ninguna repercusión, la polémica cobró fuerza cuando Rosa Montero publicó en el diario español El País el 16 de octubre de 2008 un artículo titulado Respeto, en el que se hacía eco de la noticia, calificando al artista como “matarife repugnante”. Dichos adjetivos prácticamente resultan elogiosos cuando se llega a leer la ola infinita de mails, blogs, páginas de internet, correos, llamadas y amenazas de sabotaje al trabajo del artista (se llegó incluso al extremo de hackear el site de myspace de Casita de Tentaciones, el grupo musical de Habacuc) que en mi opinión reflejan un malestar social  que seguramente tiene otras razones y aflora en episodios como este.  El artista decidió recoger estas manifestaciones de odio en estado puro, involucrando de este modo en su obra el denominado como “proceso mediatizador”. Para ello creó la web www.eresloquelees.info con el fin de recopilar las distintas expresiones artísticas, entrevistas, videos y mails que la obra suscitó y denunciar la obediencia a las reglas sociales de lo que se debe de hacer en una galería, de lo políticamente correcto…

Lo importante para mí era la hipocresía de la gente: un animal así se convierte en foco de atención cuando lo pongo en un lugar blanco donde la gente va a ver arte pero no cuando está en la calle muerto de hambre. Igual pasó con Natividad Canda, la gente no se sensibilizó con él hasta que se lo comieron los perros (…) Nadie llegó a liberar al perro ni le dio comida o llamó a la policía. Nadie hizo nada.

Sin embargo el artista también recibió algunas críticas elogiosas, como la de la artista plástica nicaragüense Alicia Zamora, quien considera que la obra es válida al generar una reflexión en el espectador, que está mal acostumbrado a un arte meramente decorativo. Juanita Bermúdez, directora de la Galería Códice, afirma por su parte que el artista usó al perro para representar una realidad social, y que lo dignificó al llevarlo como una pieza de arte conceptual a una exposición, pese a que su mensaje sigue resultando enigmático y poco explícito.

Una de las iniciativas más importantes llevadas a cabo en la web para intentar desprestigiar a Habacuc fue una campaña internacional de recogida de firmas para evitar que el artista participase, como representante costarricense en la VI Bienal de Artes Visuales del Istmo Centroamericano celebrada en Honduras el año pasado, bajo la falsa amenaza inventada por la WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) de que Habacuc repetiría su obra con otro perro en dicha Bienal. Con el fin de involucrarla dentro de la obra, el propio Habacuc llegó a firmar esa petición, ya que, como él sentenció “por tradición los artistas firmamos nuestras obras”. A pesar de las más de 2 millones de firmas presentadas, el Museo de Arte y Diseño Contemporáneo de Costa Rica emitió un comunicado en el que advierte no tener injerencia alguna en la representación de Costa Rica en la Bienal Centroamericana de Honduras 2008, pero que la obra en la que Habacuc involucró un perro, y por la que está siendo cuestionado internacionalmente no participó ni forma parte de la selección de obras de la bienal. En cualquier caso, el comunicado concluye diciendo que “consideramos que la solicitud de derogación de la participación de Guillermo Vargas (Habacuc) es legalmente improcedente y sin fundamento, no solo porque las obras con las que el artista fue seleccionado a la Bienarte 2007 son distintas a la obra cuestionada, sino porque la censura de un artista por hacer una obra muy polémica -aunque este sujeta a discusión dentro de los ámbitos de la estética y la ética- no debe ser de ningún modo la base de legitimación de la censura”. Gracias a esta contundente afirmación a favor de la libertad de expresión y en contra de la censura previa, Habacuc pudo presentar dos de sus obras, que fueron seleccionadas entre más de 210 creaciones de artistas costarricenses para representar a su país en la Bienal Centroamericana de Honduras 2008:

• Jony leyendo y explicando: Videoproyección de 21 minutos en la que Johny lee durante 20 minutos 4 páginas del libro de Roland Barthes La información visual, para luego explicarlas. Esta obra  emplaza de manera mordaz temas inherentes al arte como institución y sistema de comunicación, cuestionando de manera pertinente la relatividad que permea este sistema, y cuestionando radicalmente sus dispositivos colonizadores y clasistas.
• Pancartas Díptico:  Se trata de dos fotografías que sitúan un mismo momento y lugar: un grupo de hombres morenos se manifiestan con pancartas contra una iglesia mormona. Los textos de dichas pancartas citan fragmentos racistas del Libro del mormón, el equivalente a la Biblia de los cristianos. Esta obra ilustra los procesos de proselitismo, racismo y manipulación en las instituciones de poder y confronta astutamente narrativas religiosas comunes, permitiendo desnudar las arbitrariedades que conllevan estas construcciones de poder en los sistemas sociales y la “manipulación de almas”.

Durante el presente año 2009 Habacuc ha realizado dos obras con relevantes implicaciones éticas y sociales:

• Discurso es una intervención efímera en una playa del Pacífico Central de Costa Rica, para la que formó esa palabra con restos y materiales recogidos del propio sitio. La pieza estuvo en la playa hasta que fue destruida gradualmente por la marea alta, llevando alrededor del mundo el “discurso” del artista (o al menos partes del mismo).
• Para la Exposición #2, inaugurada en Milano el 18 de septiembre de 2009 se recolectó el sudor de 5 personas inmigrantes: un cocinero egipcio, una prostituta nigeriana, un constructor marroquí, un albañil rumano, un vendedor ambulante senegalés y un conserje peruano. Empleando su sudor como materia prima se prepararon varios alimentos, que fueron servidos y consumidos por los asistentes el día de la inauguración. Resultan evidentes las connotaciones sociales de la performance para las sociedades occidentales, en las que el trabajo (sudor) de inmigrantes del tercer mundo, mantiene y “alimenta” a la gente del primer mundo.Después se se proyectó el siguiente vídeo de la preparación de dichos alimentos:

I’m still on with the modern art thing. I hear all sorts of people trying to defend modern art against my “antiquated and reactionary thinking.” Well, they can all just rot in their own feces, and I’ll tell you why. This telluric, post modern ideology that gives you blank canvases for art eventually gets to this point:

A Costa Rican “artist” named Guillermo Vargas took a dog, tied him up, and gave instructions for the dog to not be given any food or water. This was his “art display.” People came in and looked at the dog as it starved. The fate of the dog seems to be unknown.

Habacuc’s exhibition included a legend spelled out in dog food reading “You are what you read,” photos and an incense burner that burned an ounce of marijuana and 175 “rock’ of crack cocaine. In the background, according to reports, the Sandista national anthem played backwards.According to the artist, his “art” was a tribute to Natividad Canda, a Nicaraguan burglar killed in Costa Rica by two rottweilers guarding property he had entered at night. The incident caused friction between the two countries. Habacuc told the daily La Nacion, “I won’t say the dog died. The importance to me is the hypocracy of the people where an animal is the focus of attention where people come to see art but not when it’s in the street starving to death.”

“The same thing happened with poor Natividad Canda. The people sympathized with him only after he was dead,” the artist added.        – Wizbang

The only thing that could possibly be worse than a moron starving a dog as “art” is a moron starving a dog as “art” in protest of a burglar who was killed by a dog when he broke in someone’s house. I just…I don’t even know what the hell to say about this, but here are the pictures…

DRAPSTRUSLANE er så overveldande mange at eg knapt vil tru det. Folk ønsker ein sakte og smertefull daud over mannen etter å ha lese ein tabloid avisartikkel. Les for øvrig kor bra og nyansert kunstnaren svarar Dagbladet, som faktisk har laga ein rimeleg grei artikkel om temaet — til å vera tabloidavis, vel å merke. Det poppar likevel opp nettstader og Facebook-grupper som vil stoppe «monsteret» og «redde hunden». Det er på eit vis heilt utruleg at så mange millionar menneske kan bli så engasjerte over livet til ein gatehund. Internett gjer det mogleg.

DET ER REAKSJONANE og omfanget av dei som gjer dette til stor kunst i mine auger. Som eg nevnte ganske nyleg: «Dersom folk flest bryr seg med å diskutere korvidt noko er kunst eller ikkje — ja, så er det kunst». Objektet «hund» som ein modernistisk skulptur i eit galleri er kanskje ikkje kunst, så eg kan godt skjønne at dei som trur det ikkje forstår noko som helst. Det som er skremmande er imidlertid at lynsjestemninga i dette tilfellet minner meg om Fritzl-saka — begge menn blir kalt «monster». Alt ein kunstnar trong gjere for å oppnå dette var å flytte ein sveltande hund frå gata til eit galleri. Så enkelt at sjølv ein treåring kunne gjort det.

Guillermo Vargas used a captured street dog in his 2007 Nicaraguan gallery exhibit. Central American animal welfare organizations alerted HSUS that the dog spent one day in the exhibit and later escaped the gallery.

One argument is that art can bring about social change. But if Vargas’ goal was to critique animal cruelty, he failed to recognize the hypocrisy of exploiting an animal to “prove a point.” He’s rightfully offended thousands of people, some who’ve organized a petition against him

read the rest  of Improverished Art and then sign the petition. what i wonder about this “art exhibit” is if the people who saw it were moved to do something about animal starvation and stray dog populations? i doubt it. making art can make a difference, but what makes the biggest difference in our world is changing ourselves and our actions. Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas failed to do this. don’t make others (dog, human, bird, whatever) suffer to prove your fatilistic view or life and suffering.

Pope Benedict XVI was 100 percent correct when he recently stood up for the sanctity of every human life, born and unborn, during the Papal Mass at Yankee Stadium.  Any society that can cavalierly destroy God’s precious gift is contrary to our nature, and as such, a society that fails to respect human life is a sick society.

Fortunately, the strength of America’s pro-life movement, as evidenced by the spontaneous applause Benedict received at Yankee Stadium after defending the unborn as well as the success of pro-life candidates at the national level, gives me hope that all is not lost for our country.  That said, much work needs to be done.  Western Civilization is ill in terms of respecting life.

At a time when western civilization devalues life, this act of cruelty exhibited by Guillermo Vargas in his now-infamous “art” exhibit is hardly surprising.  In fact, it is symptomatic of a sick culture.  For those of you unfamiliar with what this scumbag did, Vargas tethered a dog, Natividad, to a wall and starved it to death while a bunch of voyeuristic freaks oohed and aahed.  Nicaraguan authorities, rather than being outraged, classified the cruelty as “art.”

Indefensible acts are often described as art.  In this sense, Vargas’ cruelty is nothing new.  However, this is an example that some in the art world are regressing from offensive to evil.  When hearing about incidents like this one, I am outraged, but I’m also glad that we have had popes like John Paul II and Benedict XVI.  In fact, I’m hopeful that they arrived just in the nick of time.

At the computer, ready to write. First, as usual, I read my email. Unfortunately, a friend sent a petition. Here’s the link: Guillermo Vargas.

I’m one of those animal lovers who pets every dog within sight, and now I can’t get the images out of my head. Yet, I did just now open up my first draft, position my cursor, touch my fingers to the keyboard…but the images linger.

Animal cruelty gets to me, and in this case especially because I lived in Central and South America. I remember those street dogs and how distressed I was every day — never got used to seeing their sad and abandoned and starved walking-dead bodies.

So, how do I get the writing done today? No one will be surprised if I go to a coffee house (without WiFi!), I’m sure. It might help to fill my head with new images — people at work and at rest and at play with their lattes and muffins…people laughing. That would be good.

I mostly keep the content of this BLOG related to TampaArtist.com and the Tampa Art Scene, I received the Email below yesterday and it made me angry that someone is using ART as a means to abuse an animal. Please take 5 mins to read and act upon it. I believe the voice of the people is the strongest method for making change.

But this is not all… the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the ‘installation’ was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

I got an e-mail from a friend just the other day asking me to sign a petition against an artist.  Recalling the scandal a few years ago when one artist displayed work depicting the Vigin Mary with elephant dung, I wondered what new titllating installation awaited visitors now.  Well, it seems the petitioner may have the facts wrong but the “artwork” in question was truly worth protesting.

The artist?  Guillermo Vargas (also known as Habacuc or Habakkuk, sometimes also cited as his middle name).  The artwork?  A starving dog tied on a short lead in a corner of the host art gallery.  Before you get too incensed, the dog was apparently caught from the streets where it was indeed starving and was part of the art installation only once for a period of a few hours.  It escaped or was turned loose later that same day (source: Humane Society).  The gallery is located in Managua, Nicaragua, and Vargas reputedly intended the setup to educate people about the number of street dogs who starve each year in Central America.

While I think the installation was poorly done at best, I think the response was poor as well.  When I googled Vargas, I got a lot of blogs full of unsubstantiated claims, pure speculation, and, overwhelmingly, anger.  Some insisted he captured the dog and starved it himself; some stated the dog was tied just out of reach of food and water in the gallery; and rumors as to whether or not the dog actually escaped or died flooded blog after blog with the tenacity of crabgrass.  Of course, being unilingual, my search was sadly limited to Google’s translating capabilities and pages in English.  So it is very possible that important details from people who knew more slipped by unnoticed.  That said, I think the Humane Society would have been more concerned – and significantly more outspoken – than they were on the incident had it been as dire as some claimed.

I think the idea (reputedly) behind the artwork is worthwhile.  If thousands of poor beasts are starving in the streets, perhaps there is something people can do to help ease the situation.  And as the saying goes, even bad press is good press; anger and pity are very strong emotions, practically guaranteed to get a reaction of some sort.  Although the international fervor probably blindsided him, art is meant to evoke emotion and it’s clear in this case it did just that.  What bothers me – and others – is not the idea behind it but the way he went about presenting it.  Perhaps he felt photos would not do the plight of the animals justice but tying one in a corner for people to oggle hardly seems better.  Of course, I would never have used elephant dung alongside the Virgin Mary so what do I know?

I just think that, before we take up the call to crucify a man, perhaps it is best to learn why.   

So the girl who artificially inseminated herself at Yale and proceeded to herbally abort any possible pregnancy? Good for her. Although she’s going about it a bit brashly or with a lack of finesse, the issues she’s raised are amazing. If it really did happen and is not staged performance art (which is every bit as legitimate in the art world– stfu mainstream media) I am concerned about her health. Herbal abortions are just toxins and work through giving you low-level poisoning, so I hope she had good advice on that front. It was her own body, either way. The sperm was theoretically gotten from men who knew its destination. No harm, no foul. And the great big mystery of whether she ever was or wasn’t pregnant? Delicious and relevant.

I am surprised that people get so wrapped up in the way they think other people should be living their lives. When rape is discussed, there’s usually a subtext about whether the girl was asking for it– was she living a life we would not condone? George Clooney’s girlfriend– if she got raped at a party, would we pay attention? Only long enough to tell her to stop being a whore on the dance floor. Are we so wrapped up in a mob mentality that we need to force others into our mode of living in order to feel comfortable with ourselves?

Here’s some other things in the art world that are close to that topic. Damien Hirst’s works, like the shark or the mating cow and bull, depict dead animals. These were not accidental deaths or found-object skeletons– these animals were killed specifically for the piece of art. I’m not going to put a moral judgment on that, simply follow a train of thought (as the pieces were hopefully designed to do). Enter Guillermo Vargas, who allegedly (the humane society says differently) chained a stray dog in a salon and starved it to death. Alright. If Hirst’s work is acceptable, in which the moment of death is an abstract (the title of the shark piece is “The Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living”, Vargas had hit a vein with the reality of death.

I’ve completely lost track of where I’m going with this and need to go to studio. So, expect refinement later.

I recently received an email with the ominous title “FW: PLEASE SIGN!!!!!” Now because my brain has not yet been completely washed away with cheap Chardonnay, my guard is generally up when any form of petition-based mail arrives in my inbox. However, I had little else more interesting to do (or should I say I had a number of pressing matters to attend to from which an inane distraction would be just the ticket) so I read it.

The mail in question refers to an artist (or “artist” as he’s refferred) from Costa Rica called Guillermo ‘Habacuc’ Vargas. For an exhibition in the Códice Gallery in Managua, Nicaragua last year Vargas captured a stray dog, which he named “Natividad”, and tied it up under the words “Eres Lo Que Lees” (“You are what you read”) which were written in dog biscuits on the wall. Now, apparently, Natividad was left there unfed throughout the exhibition and eventually died of starvation.

Predictably this has caused outrage. There is a petition mentioned in the mail to stop Vargas from taking part in this year’s Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American and several others on the internet. Also there are numerous blogs and postings on the subject along with YouTube videos all full of heart-tugging emotional music and, of course, violent hatred!

Here are some of the YouTube comments including inventive suggestions for retribution…

…and some people, as usual, just need an excuse to dust off the old white hood…

What I find the most shocking about this is the willingness of people to drop everything at a minute’s notice and form an angry mob. It seems we, as a species, are always just seconds away from becoming an irrational hate group. And hate is hate, whomever it is directed at. It doesn’t need reason or any of the normal rules we supposedly deem necessary to be civilised.

Even more disturbing is the fact that people are manipulated so easily, and I’m not talking about starving dogs here really, because if that’s all it takes, an unsolicited email, to sway people into making death threats (apparently Vargas has received many of these) or just into making quite frankly disgusting (and no doubt illegal) comments online, then we can be made to do or accept anything.

If anyone bothers to research Vargas’ exhibition from a more reliable source (more reliable than a questionable email, someone’s YouTube offering or any blog anyway – and you can include this one) they may find out more information about the truth. Are you going to do that?

Some years ago when I lived in Britain, during the IRA terrorist campaign, a mortar was launched into a park in central London. One or two people might have been killed. There was the usual uproar in the press. When the media frenzy had subsided, a friend, weary of the incessant coverage, cynically remarked, “Thank God no dogs were killed.”

Intentionally killing or injuring animals, especially dogs and cats, has the ability to move us to pity or outrage as few other things do. This feeling, I think, goes beyond normal human empathy. We sentimentalize animals. Without warrant, we endow them with human characteristics and project on them human needs and wants. It’s a cult. Consider that in 2006, $39 billion was spent in the United States feeding cats and dogs rich, high protein, nutritionally balanced diets, so much in fact some of them have contracted classic industrial nation illnesses, like Type II diabetes and heart disease. Billions more were spent on veterinary fees, grooming, fencing, training, toys, worming pills, kennelling and so on. Consider also that between the years 2000 and 2006 25% of the world’s children under age 5 were “severely” or “moderately” underweight. These facts are not unrelated.

A few days ago, The Vancouver Manifesto posted an account of a dog that an artist named Guillermo Vargas allegedly starved to death as part of an art exhibit in Managua, Nicaragua last summer. (I use the word “allegedly” advisedly: according to the original press report, the director of gallery where the exhibit took place denied that the dog was maltreated, and said the animal was fed regularly and in fact escaped a day after the exhibit opened.) Regardless, the images circulating on the net are disturbing. They show an obviously emaciated, even cachectic dog — symbolically named Natividad — tied in a corner of an art gallery, food deliberately placed out of reach, while patrons of the gallery callously ignore the dog’s plight.

Representing a suffering humanity

How should we approach such a work? First, we should dispense of the notion that art needs to be pleasing to the eye or pleasant to contemplate. Picasso’s Guernica is neither. Commenting on the piece, The Vancouver Manifesto writes

Good art stirs emotion. It doesn’t have to be “beautiful”. It doesn’t have to be tasteful. Good art will stir emotion. I actually think this was a powerful form of art. Yes it was distasteful, yes it was animal cruelty, yes it was just plain disgusting. But it was powerful. Think about what it represents. Everyday there are starving sickly people, children. The numbers of those in poverty are in the millions.

Yet Vargas’s work poses some challenging ethical problems, even if, as it is claimed, the dog was well-treated. (Vargas himself, it should be noted, makes no such claim.) In the end, arguments such as the artist was performing some higher good in torturing a dog are sophomoric. Trickier is the question of whether ethical impropriety invalidates a work of art. Here I would have to say no. Clearly, Vargas presents a powerful image. Indeed, the ethical dubiousness of how he achieves his ends serves to underline our own failings, our own direct or indirect participation in an immoral system which condemns millions to poverty and misery, and our inability or unwillingness to change the status quo. Using a dog, which in the West is granted more humanity than a starving child in some Third World outpost, adds to the sting.

Why then are we so shocked when a dog is tortured when millions of children with infinitely more self-awareness suffer in the most horrendous way imaginable from want of a proper diet, from warfare, from disease? I can cite some familiar answers: racism, fatigue over the constant barrage of images of desperate, starving children, systemic inequalities, globalization and so on. I think it’s much simpler, and comes down to our own complacency and self-satisfaction. No one actually fed the animal during the exhibition, though I am sure many theorized about it.

It astonishes me that an online petition against the artist has gained 1.5 million signatures. One can imagine the artist’s particular gleeful satisfaction. Sadly, it would be even more astonishing to see an online petition containing a million signatures of men and women who “get” Vargas’s work, to save one single child in Darfur or Zimbabwe.

Darauf gekommen bin ich, weil ich gestern ein Mail bekam, das für eine Unterstützung gegen den Künstler in Form einer Petition warb.

San José – Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas” wollte ein Zeichen setzten: Er ließ ein paar Kinder im Armenviertel des nicaraguanischen Managua einen abgemagerten Straßenhund einfangen und kettete ihn in der städtischen Galerie an. Dann nahm er mehrere Hand voll Trockenfutter und schrieb damit einen Satz an die Wand: “Du bist, was du liest”. Einen Tag später war die Schrift noch da – das Tier war tot. Verhungert.

Mittlerweile diskutieren Blogger aus aller Welt den Fall. “Eine Schande für die Kunst”, empört sich einer, “Bravo für Habacuc”, lobt ein anderer, der in der Inszenierung des Künstlers eine Demonstration gegen die Unmenschlichkeit sieht.

Der Künstler selbst wollte sich Journalisten gegenüber nicht zum Tod des Tieres äußern. “Ich werde nicht sagen, ob der Hund gestorben ist”, sagte Vargas. Wichtiger sei in seinen Augen die Heuchelei der Menschen. “Wenn ich den Hund als Kunstobjekt vor eine Wand binde, wird er plötzlich zum Fokus. Auf den ersten Blick hört sich die Kunstaktion ziemlich derb an, aber auf den zweiten erkennt man doch sehr schnell was der Künstler damit aussagen will. Ein Beispiel anderer Art: Die Medien berichteten über ein kleines Mädchen das in einen Brunnen gefallen war und darin festgesteckte. Die ganze Welt nahm Anteil an dem Einzelschicksal – im gleichen Zeitraum sterben täglich 30.000 Kinder (Die häufigsten Krankheiten, die bei Kleinkindern zum Tod führen, sind Atemwegserkrankungen, Durchfall, Malaria, Masern und AIDS. Mangelernährung ist bei 54 Prozent aller Todesfälle eine der entscheidenden Ursachen). Natürlich ist ein durch die Medien publiziertes Einzelschicksal genauso tragisch wie 30.000 Einzelschicksale täglich – nur das die Medien ein Brennglas auf ein einziges Ereignis lenken. Das gleiche verhält sich im Falle von dem vermissten Mädchen Madeleine in Spanien. In anderen Ländern werden Kinder verkauft, müssen unter unwürdigen Bedingungen arbeiten und so weiter, nur das dies von den Medien nicht berichtet wird. Die Masse stürzt sich auf ein mediales Ereignis und der Rest wird einfach ignoriert.

So gesehen hat der Künstler mit der Aussage Recht: “Wenn ich den Hund als Kunstobjekt vor eine Wand binde, wird er plötzlich zum Fokus. Wenn er in der Strasse vor Hunger stirbt, kümmert das keinen.” Genau so funktioniert es in unserer Welt, man bemerkt den armen Hund auf der Strasse, aber er gehört zum Alltag und dringt deshalb nicht weiter in unser Bewusstsein vor. Und genau dies wollte der Künstler aufzeigen. Würde man den Fokus bei uns auf die Hühnerfarmen bzw. Fleischerzeuger richten, dann gäbe es auch einen Aufschrei aufgrund der unwürdigen Haltungs- und Schlachtbedingungen, aber die Menschen würden trotzdem günstiges Hühnerfleisch vorziehen und dadurch kann sich die Ursache nicht ändern. Die Beispiele lassen sich endlos fortsetzen, hier noch eins.
Würde ich im Rahmen einer Kunstausstellung mit einem Beil öffentlich ein Huhn köpfen und die Medien würden es aufgreifen, so gäbe es sicher einen Aufschrei (Brutalität, Tierquälerei, Massaker). Am besten noch das Video von der Köpfungsaktion bei YouTube reinstellen, damit es alle mitbekommen. Die meisten die sich darüber aufregen vergessen gerne, dass genau das gleiche jeden Tag hunderttausendmal in den Schlachthöfen vollautomatisiert passiert.

Aufgrund dieser Aussage war die Kunstaktion eine gute Umsetzung wie unsere Realität tatsächlich ist, ich gehe auch davon aus, da Künstler nicht unbedingt grausame Menschen sind, das der Hund noch lebt.

In dem Zusammenhang auch noch interessant, da aktuell: Scheinwerferattacke auf bodensee-kormorane. Experten des Regierungspräsidiums Freiburg sind in der Nacht zum Mittwoch angerückt, um mit Halogenstrahlern Kormorane im Naturschutzgebiet Radolfzeller Aachried aus ihren Nestern zu scheuchen.
Mit dieser am Bodensee bisher einmaligen Aktion wollen sie bei Temperaturen um den Gefrierpunkt den Nachwuchs der schwarz gefiederten Wasservögel dezimieren, die vielen Fischern als Fischräuber gelten. Mal sehen wann es den Haubentauchern an den Kragen geht, sind ja auch Fischräuber – machmal frage ich mich was dann die vielen Fischer auf dem Bodensee sind – keine Fischräuber? Und die Folgen nicht zu vergessen: Die arme Ente und der Angelhaken Der Mensch und sein eingreifen in die Natur.

Update 15. April 2008: Die Aufregung um den Hund scheint grösser zu werden. Manchmal frage ich mich, ob die Menschen die Tatsache wie die Welt der Medien funktioniert nicht durchschauen. Gutes Beispiel war die Bonsai Katze, die Katze im Glas. Es gab einen riesigen Aufschrei, dabei war alles nur gut geplante Provokation und nicht real.
Von Bekannten wurde ich wegen meiner Meinung zu diesen Thema “Künstler lässt Hund verhungern” angegriffen. “Da musst du auch als Künstler dagegen sein” so der O-Ton. Eine “tierliebe Familie” – was die beiden nicht sehen, ist wie ihre kleinen Kindern mit “ihren Haustieren” umgehen und das ist definitiv reine Tierquälerei! Als Argument kommt dann, dass sie schliesslich lernen müssen mit Tieren umzugehen – Pech für die noch jetzt lebenden Haustiere. 2 Hamster totgetreten (vermutlich unabsichtlich), der kleine Hase in der Badewanne ersoffen, weil die beiden Kinder mit ihm in der Badewanne spielten und das Meerschweinchen … nun ja, Mikrowelle ist gefährlich. Natürlich sind die Eltern überzeugte Tierschützer und Vegetarier, “sind ja noch Kinder” heisst es dann als Entschuldigung. Toll!

Der Künstler hat genau diese Heuchler enttarnt, die soggenannten Tierliebhaber, die ihren grossen Hund in einer 1-2 Zimmerwohnung in der Grossstadt halten, kurz mal in der Frühe und am Abend Gassi gehen und genau diese Leute regen sich über die Kunstaktion am meisten auf. Bescheuerte Menschheit!

Tierliebe scheint einen ganz anderen Wahrnehmungszustand und Weltverständnis auszulösen, der Respekt vor den Tieren geht einigen der Tierhalter komplett ab. Tierhaltung erfolgt gerne aus egoistischen Gründen, “der beste Freund ist das Haustier – klar, weil er die Klappe hält und keine Widerworte gibt” und vergessen dabei die Tiere artgerecht zu halten. Das sind dann die, die ihre Tiere zu Tode lieben.

Was soll man dazu sagen? Warum nicht gleich den Künstler standrechtlich erschiessen? Ist doch legitim, oder? Vor allem, was ist unmenschlich? Der Mensch ist wohl der einzige der sich benimmt wie ein Mensch. Kriege, Umweltzerstörung, Unterdrückung gehören zu den Eigenschaften, aber auch soziales Verhalten, Fürsorge und Empathie.

Ich ersuche jeden der Fleisch isst einmal einen grossen Schlachthof zu besuchen oder die grossen Tiermäster und dann nochmals zu entscheiden ob man weiterhin Fleisch essen möchte. Das abgepackte Fleisch im Supermarkt stammt übrigens von Tieren! Ich bin kein Vegetarier!

Es stellt sich nicht die Frage ob das Kunst ist, sondern ob diese öffentliche Zurschaustellung von moralisch verwerflichen Aktionen generell mittlerweile zum Normalalltag wird. Siehe Tötungsfilme der Islammilizen, Unfälle im Detail mit zerfetzen Leichen, öffentliche Pathologie, usw. – das ist die Kernfrage.

Tenia mucho tiempo que no escribia algo por aqui, pero debido a mi insomnio avanzado y a la ignorancia que he visto en muchisimas personas ultimamente no me queda otra razón que hacerlo.

El tema que voy a tratar será de Guillermo Vargas “Habacuc”, este artista costarricense es ahora mundialmente conocido por llevar un perro callejero al que apodo “Natividad” a una bienal artistica en Nicaragua, la razón por la que es tan conocido es porque según los forwards que envian, segun miles de blogs que he leido, este artista escribió “ERES LO QUE LEES” con croquetas de perro mientras el “pobre” animalito estaba amarrado a un lado y esperando a que muriera de inanición para que su obra triunfara.

No entiendo si las personas que firman esto, tienen tan poco cerebro para creer todo lo que les llega al mail, o tan solo se dejan llevar por las masas, aunque creo que esto ultimo es lo que pasa.

En una aclaración de la directora de la Bienal desmiente todos estos hechos…

Guillermo Vargas si recogió a ese perro de la calle, pero sin embargo lo alimento durante los dias que lo tuvo en la bienal, le daba sus 3 comidas al dia, jugaba con el, hacia MAS que lo que un dueño cualquiera hace por su mascota! El perro no estuvo amarrado todo el dia en la sala de exposición, sino que estuvo libre en el patio del recinto hasta que un momento decidió irse, no se si se murio de hambre después, se lo comió otro perro, lo atropello un carro o sigue por las calles de Nicaragua husmeando entre los botes de basura que encuentra.

Ahora, viendolo desde el punto de vista social creo que la mayoria de las personas a las que he visto reenviar esos correos son mucho peores que él. Conozco miles de personas que al momento de ver un perro en la calle le tienen todo menos amor, he conocido gente que apenas ve uno se agacha como si recogiera una piedra para espantarlos y también he conocido gente que aparte de eso dignandose de la posición privilegiada y de la “clase” les encanta asistir a las corridas de toros que llegan a esta ciudad. Y que hablar de la violencia? Cuanta gente no se muere en peores condiciones que la de este perro? Cuantas personas EN ESTA CIUDAD no están metidos en el narcotráfico y en la guerra entre zetas y gente nueva? Que de la matanza de focas en Canadá? Que de las corridas de toros? Acaso están firmando peticiones o buscando acciones para que se paré eso que es muchísimo mas importante que una información MAL TOMADA?

Ahh pero si mandan un mail diciendo que este wey es un asesino de perros se la tragan, no? Hagan algo de provecho y dejen de andar criticando a una persona que minimo les trata de decir algo.

Lo peor del caso es que las multitudes son demasiado hipocritas y tienen tantas mascaras que ahorita estan diciendo “HAY DIOS MALDITO SEA GUILLERMO VARGAS” y al rato estarán lanzandole piedras o asustando al primer perro o gato que se les cruce en el camino.

Al menos esta persona si esta haciendo algo para tomar conciencia.
