Life is Savage is all about the things that make YOU happy and this my friends is what its all about.

A new world record was set on Monday when 10 000 flying lanterns were launched into the night sky in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Behold.

Happyness.

Excuse me, i can’t hear you over how awesome that sh*t is.

“The flying lantern is a Chinese tradition. It is essentially a paper bag with a block of paraffin with a wick suspended by wire across the opening. The lantern lifts when the wick is lit, warming the air inside like a hot air balloon. Freedom Faithnet Global said it organized the lantern release as a symbol of hope and prayer as part of annual celebrations. This year’s celebrations have an environmental focus.” [wlwt]

Im sure with the right organisers we can break that record here in South Africa (preferably in Cape Town ) hey..imagine watching that just after you puffed on the good stuff.

Good times.

Dublin’s 98 are working in conjunction with the Irish Red Cross to break two world records at the same time. Together we are attempting to smash two world records on Thursday 29th October at 8.pm. The first of which is for the multiple venues record and the second applies to single venue.

1. The Greatest number of participants taking part in table quizzes in various locations around the country. *The largest multi venue quiz involved 1,234 participants across 21 venues set in Ireland and the UK on 12 June 2007.
2. The Greatest number of participants taking part in a table quiz in one location. *1,475 participants is the record for the biggest single venue pub quiz attempt set also in 2007.

Tallaght Event:
At 8.pm on Thursday 29th October at The National Basketball Arena in Tallaght The Irish Red Cross will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the Largest Quiz in the world. To break this world record we need 400 teams of 4 people to take part in this event. Each team costs €50. for four people, and first prize is €200. from Tallaght credit union, four tickets to Heineken Green Spheres event and a trophy. Fantastic spot prizes and raffle on the night. Dublin’s 98 morning crew will be there on the night to co host the event, and if you feel like having a few drinks on the night, then Captain America’s School bus will be running a free shuttle bus service for us to and from the event. Pick up between 7.pm and 8.pm at the Luas stop in Tallaght outside their restaurant.

Multiple Venues:
Venues throughout Ireland will take part simultaneously and commence at 8.00pm on the evening of the Thursday 29th of October. We have 38 venues registered so far and as long as we have 8 teams in each venue we will break this world record. All quizzes will be opened live on air with Today FM’s Paul Mc Clune Show, when the presenter will introduce the first round on musical knowledge. Today FM will be sending updates on this event throughout the night.

For each quiz there will be 10 rounds of 7 questions conducted on the ground by designated quiz masters with an interval after round 5, during which a raffle for 5 spot prizes will to take place. Prize for the winning team will be presented at the end of the event in each venue.

Ladies and gentlemen, hope and pray your 5 year old children never go to school with this kid:

Meet Giuliano Stroe. He is 5. He has been working out since he was 2 years old. And he is downright terrifying.

Romanian Giuliano Stroe, five, has been training since the age of two in Italy – where he lives with his family – and now the hard work has finally paid off.

He was entered into the record books earlier this year after performing some impressive ‘hand-walking’ skills to a panel of judges and an astonished audience on an Italian TV show .

The exceptional pre-schooler performed the fastest ever 10m hand walk with a weight ball between his legs to the delight of the studio audience.

I just want to know one thing…WHAT THE HELL IS HIS ABDOMINAL ROUTINE!?!! I mean, does he stick to just straight reps of crunches? Is it a well balanced combination of weight intensified movements and a regimented diet? Or is he the kind of lifter that likes to keep his body guessing and never let it get used to a routine??? DAMMIT I MUST KNOW! I GO ON A CRUISE IN A MONTH!!!

I think I’ve finally found the antithesis to all those soccer moms caking their little girls in make up and hooker scents for all those Little Miss Future High School Slut pageants…

Holy Macaroni. I have been known to impulse buy up to 5 fashion magazines in one trip to Stop & Shop, but this bad boy is NOT in my budget!

A special edition of the Czech luxury magazine “Royal Report” has been released, featuring gold letters and diamond-crusted “R”s on the cover.

The mag. will be auctioned off and is expected to score the equilivent of $228,936. I’ll say it again – holy macaroni!

Apparently the magazine includes more than just the 3959084309843 (barely an exaggeration) tear-out subscription pages that fall out every time I read my Vogue. THIS special edition includes a yearly subscription, a vacation four times a year to anywhere in the world, and 12 hours on a private jet plane.

The organizers are aiming to be listed in the Guinness book of records with the most expensive magazine in the world. It’s good to have goals.

A most fitting finish to a grueling 24 days!
Usually I start my mornings by icing my knees, applying a special cream to them that helps with the swelling and pain and taking some extra strength pain killers to help with both the swelling and whatever pain I might start out with.
Today I decided to do none of that though. Call me crazy, but I wanted to feel every ounce of pain throughout the whole day. During this trip pain has been my most present companion. Always with me, he never lags behind and I’ve never been able to drop him. So today I decided it would be a battle between him and me.
He’s always faithful to show up and I knew that he would show his face again with the mountains and wind in my way. So when the mountains came, I smiled at them. And then came pain. Always on schedule he screamed at me again and again. However, today I knew I would outlast him. So when he showed himself I literally laughed at him. After today I can leave him behind for good.

…..
And last: Never ever ever give up! Don’t give up on your family, your marriages, your kids, your dreams, and don’t give up on God.

Out On His Own (photo courtesy of David Peat)

In February 2008, Mark Beaumont finished an epic journey cycling around the world in 194 days and 17 hours, smashing the previous world record by more than 80 days. However, he is not driven by world records, fame or even cycling. This is a world record holder with a difference.

After reading an article in the Dundee Courier about a man who had cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End, Beaumont, then aged 11, was inspired to attempt some very ambitious challenges. The following year he undertook a 145 mile cycle across Scotland and two years later completed the 1038 mile John O’Groats to Land’s End cycle, raising £3000 for numerous charities. This was just the beginning.

After graduating in Economics and Politics from Glasgow University he enthusiastically set out thereafter on various challenges and a new career as an ‘adventurer’. Possibly a life changing moment and the catalyst for more extraordinary challenges came during an internship in Boston.

“Originally I wanted to be a fund manager, but only because I fancied the money. I had no idea what they actually did. During my internship in Boston I saw guys in positions I had aspired to who were ten years older than me and it wasn’t how I imagined it would be. This gave me a fresh look at things and made me ask myself, ‘Where are your passions? Where are your ambitions?’ and I decided to go for it. As a career I want to bring endurance events to screen in a very personal and intimate way, not survival programmes – but the real deal –I want to be the all-round athlete.”

There is clearly an audience for ultra endurance expeditions as his journey was watched by over 3 million viewers on the BBC documentary series ‘The Man Who Cycled the World’, which was nominated for a Scottish Bafta award.

His journey round the world was not without setbacks. He was knocked off his bike on three occasions and mugged on another. Despite this, Mark completed his circumnavigation of the world, finishing at the Arc de Triomphe having cycled through 20 countries and having covered over 18,000 miles.

Taking on the world (Photo courtesy of David Peat)

It wasn’t all plain sailing in getting his career as an adventurer off the ground, but as he explains, his determination shone through to get the ball rolling:

“Unfortunately there is no magic wand. It takes hard work to get your first project off the ground and get people to buy into your dream. I spent three or four months doing full-time admin jobs. I would work into the night on the logistical planning for the world cycle and the training. To work and back, I was running a total of a half marathon every day. It was pretty demoralizing at times but luckily I got my break.”

Mark required every ounce of determination he could muster to raise the tens of thousands of pounds he needed to kick off his world cycle.

“I was flat broke and working very hard to get sponsorship. It took eight months of getting turned away before I got my first capital sponsorship which was £500. It’s a balance between making the most of opportunities and making sure you are living your own ambitions and dreams.”

After such hard work he was under no illusions as to how he would make his impact in the world as an adventurer.

“If you are going to build a career in this sort of thing you have to make a bit of a splash first time and I thought to myself that there is nothing bigger than the world.”

Find out what drives Mark to do the things he does, and his other plans in Part 2

I wake early this morning to go for jogging. A habit that is long forgotten but I pick it again to keep myself fit and healthy. And perhaps, to jump start my “engine” for a wonderful day ahead!

Usually, I would play a motivation cd in my little “cargo van” to perk myself up mentally…if the physical exercise did not work on me. Today, I am listening to Joe Girard. In case, you are wondering who is Joe Girard. He is the world’s Greatest Salesman. During his 15 year selling career, he had sold 13,001 new cars and trucks, and all at retail. This is a guiness record and is still has not been broken yet.

While listening to the cd, my attention is drawn to him mentioning that “honesty is the best policy”. I truely agreed with him that when faced with a difficult situation and if we are caught in between, it would be wise that we own up to our fault and tell the truth to our friends and colleagues.

If we betray the trust between both parties, we might not win back that trust again. This is especially true in our translation work. If we find out that certain terms are not properly translated, then we need to highlight to the client. The client will definitely not be pleased to hear about the mistakes. We will also be reprimand by them.

But at least, we are able to maintain the friendship between both parties. If we admit to our mistakes with the best intention of resolving the issues, our client will understand it and accept us better. In a way, we may even solidify the working relationship further.

I truely believe that Honesty is even more important in our everyday’s dealing be it in business, our working place or with our loved ones than ever before.

Despite cycling being a large part of his life to date, Mark has no intentions to limit himself to the one sport.

“I’ve never had any ambitions to cycle as a career in any of the Tours. My main reason for cycling round the world was for the journey which it involved.”

Smashing a world record is the average competitive sportsperson’s dream and is what drives them to push themselves to the limit. Fame and fortune can be a huge driving force, too. With Mark, it couldn’t be further from the truth.

“It wasn’t about beating the next man. The fact there are now three people planning to try to break my record is great. It is what the record is there for and it is not going to make me want to do it again. I am not doing this to be famous; I am living a personal ambition and by doing so it can also be beneficial to other people. It is my hope and ambition not to be pigeon-holed in any one sport. I’d like to try my hand at different challenges.”

Throughout the years Mark has placed a high importance on raising money for various charities while at the same time living out his dream as an ‘adventurer’. A wide range of charities have benefited from his efforts including ‘Save the Children’, ‘Tusk Trust’ and ‘Community Action Nepal’ (C.A.N).

Whilst glory is bestowed on Mark for his amazing achievements, he is quick to acknowledge the invaluable support of the ‘team’ behind him including a physio, masseuse, nutritionist, sports doctor and others. Most important of these is his Mother, Una, who he describes as his ‘first point of contact’ and ‘base camp’ during the world cycle, who has been an ever present influence since the days when he first dreamt of a career as an adventurer.

This ‘adventurer’ is truly unique and his achievements will take some beating. Lance Armstrong entitled his autobiography, ‘It’s Not About the Bike’. This phrase could not be more applicable to Mark Beaumont’s philosophy. His refreshing enthusiasm and drive will serve as an inspiration to many who try to emulate his success.
