What do you think the best-selling albums of all time are?

Yesterday I saw a list of the world’s 75 best-selling albums ever. I was surprised that though The Beatles have a few albums on the list…their highest ranking album is only at #15 (“Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band“).

I was surprised that Elvis Presley isn’t on the list at all, and I was disappointed that KISS isn’t on the list at all either.

Even though I don’t like his music, I wasn’t surprised that Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album is the number one best-selling record of all time (110 million units sold).

The number two record didn’t even sell half that many.
I have never owned a Michael Jackson record…but I do have the number two album.
What do you guess the second best-selling record ever is?

Folheando a edição em português já de 2010 do famoso Guinness World Recordes, chamado na capa de “O livro da década”, encontrei por acaso uma nota que inclui Agatha Christie no rol dos recordes:

32,2cm: espessura do livro mais grosso, a edição limitada The Complete Miss Marple de Agatha Christie, lançado pelo HarperCollins em 20.05.2009.

O Ministério do Mistério adverte: deixar cair este livro da estante pode causar sérios acidentes, principalmente se ele cair em cima do seu pé…

We would have expected that the owner of such a record to be a rebel punker, barely out of puberty. Nothing more false. The man who was appointed in 2010 edition of the Guinness Book of Records is a 78 years old man who was general manager of Barclays bank for 30 years.

The eccentric pensioner was approved by the Guinness World Book of Records, after a committee of experts has counted all 241 piercings, of which no less than 150 are on his face and neck. In order to match all the metals which puncture his skin, John Lynch filled his body with tattoos, his favorite being a Marilyn Monroe tattoo, who covers most of his bust.

Initially, Lynch didn’t qualified for the 2010 edition of the Records Book, having 5 piercings less than the former owner of the record, but when he heard this, he added 20 more, to be sure he doesn’t miss it.

Ironically, Lynch didn’t discovered his passion for body art, piercings and tattoos until he was 40 years old, when – after losing a bet – made his first piercing. Since then, every year has added a few, to become a true local celebrity in the town of Apsely, Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, where locals have named him Prince Albert.

O cantor evangélico Feliciano Amaral, quando completou 89 anos na terça-feira, 20, anunciou que fará uma turnê em Massachusetts em 2010, como parte da comemoração de seu 90o aniversário e pelos 62 anos de carreira.

Ele está no Guiness Book como o cantor evangélico que está há mais tempo em atividade no mundo. As homenagens em Boston começaram na noite de segunda-feira da semana passada, quando o programa Louvor e Saudade (650AM), apresentado pelo filho dele, Gaspar dos Reis, iniciou a série de especiais sobre o artista.

Feliciano gravou o primeiro disco em 1948 – ainda em 78 rotações – e rompeu a barreira do tempo, chegando no século XXI com diversos CDs no mercado e um DVD gravado ao vivo em Recife no ano passado.

Em 2003 o cantor recebeu uma Moção de Aplausos e Congratulações da Assembléia Legislativa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, uma espécie de reconhecimento público pela dedicação do artista à obra de Deus e á música cristã.

“Meu pai já lançou 49 discos ao longo da carreira e não há uma igreja que não admire a sua obra. No próximo ano ele vem aos Estados Unidos para uma série de apresentações que vão coroar seus 90 anos de idade e uma carreira inteira dedicada a Deus”, disse o radialista Gaspar dos Reis.

Em seu programa de rádio, Louvor e Saudades (segundas e terças-feiras das 19 às 20 horas na 650 AM), Reis iniciou na segunda-feira os especiais sobre Feliciano Amaral.

“Claro que sendo meu pai as pessoas poderiam pensar que seria a razão para os especiais. Mas no meio evangélico todos reconhecem o seu valor. Por isso, desde a segunda-feira não paro de receber emails parabenizando a medida e de pessoas querendo saber e reservar lugar nas apresentações, afirma Reis.

No programa estão sendo apresentadas canções de Feliciano Amaral e gravações de diversos cantores e pastores são mostradas a cada 10 minutos. Todos eles falam da importância do artista para o mundo evangélico.

O pastor Benedito Santa Rosa, de Londrina, gravou uma mensagem onde deixa claro que Feliciano Sodré “é um patrimônio da humanidade e não apenas dos evangélicos”.

The organizers of the auction hope the special edition will find a place in the Guinness book of world records as the most expensive magazine in the world. The price for the magazine includes a yearly subscription, a vacation four times a year to any place in the world and 12 hours use of a jet plane. The special edition of luxury mag is expected to sell for more than 4 million Czech crowns ($229,394) when it will be auctioned off.

The world’s new tallest man, measuring 2m 46.5cm (eight feet one inch), said he was looking for love as he was presented by Guinness World Records in London. “My biggest dream though, is to get married and have children — I’m looking for love,” Sultan Kosen, 26 said.
Kosen is also wearing a new title as the one with the world’s largest hands and largest feet, measuring 27.5cm and 36.5cm respectively. He has beaten China’s Bao Xishun, whose height is 2.36m.

The Turk is reported to have blotted out the iconic Tower Bridge as he posed for photographs on the banks of the River Thames in his first ever trip outside his native Turkey.

Media reports say journalists had tough time thrusting their microphones towards his mouth for interviews. Kosen dropped out of school due to his extreme height, but works occasionally as a farmer to support his family.

He said he hoped his newfound celebrity status would enable him “to travel and see the world and have a car that accommodates my size”. He has problems squeezing into a regular-sized car. However, Kosen said his height makes it easier for him to replace light bulbs and hanging curtains for his mother at home.

He has three brothers and a sister, who are all normal-sized, but his rate of growth surged from the age of 10 because of a tumour which caused too much growth hormone to be released from his pituitary gland, according to the news.com.au.

The report said the tumour was successfully removed in surgery and he finally stopped growing last year. He uses walking sticks and tires quickly if he is standing.

Guinness editor-in-chief Craig Glenday travelled to Turkey to personally validate Kosen’s height under strict guidelines, measuring him three times in one day because bodies expand and shrink throughout the day.

Glenday said: “Sultan’s an imposing figure, but a gentle, quiet man who’s totally relaxed and unfazed about his unique standing in the world.”

Quando se trata de alguns dos maiores filmes da década, o Guinness World Records cobriu tudo. A re-imaginação de JJ Abram de Star Trek entrou no livro deste ano como o “Trailer de Filme mais Baixado (24 Horas)”, com 1,8 milhões de downloads no Apple.com no primeiro dia e mais de cinco milhões em seus primeiros cinco dias de lançamento. Twilight, dirigido por Catherine Hardwicke, capturou os corações e as carteiras de milhões, enquanto reivindicou o recorde de “Maior bilheteria de filme dirigido por uma mulher”.

O cão chamado Otto pode entrar para o Guinness, Livro dos Recordes, como o mais velho do mundo, após a morte do cão Chanel de 21 anos. Otto tem 20 anos e seis meseses.

O propretário Peter Jones de 68 anos, diz que tem Otto desde que o animal nasceu e que o cão é resultado de uma cruza das raças Dachshund e Terrier. Jones disse que sua mulher ainda tem o certificado que comprova a idade do animal.

20 anos para um cão é aproximadamente 112 anos para uma pessoa!

The world’s oldest dog died. Last Friday. Authorities do not suspect any foul play, and have ruled it death by natural causes.

“Chanel” was 21 years old this past May, when Guinness World Records officials honored her with a birthday party hosted by the Dogswell pet food company at the New York Dog Spa and Hotel in Manhattan. Chanel was 21-years-old. That’s “147 in dog years” claims conventional thought. But alas, conventional thought here is bogus. I mean how many 147-year-old humans have you heard of?  Like EVER?  Not counting the Bible. More on how to more accurately calculate “dog years” in a moment.

We don’t know who exactly coined the term “dog years” but it didn’t appear until the 20th century. By the 1960s it had become fairly well-known as math textbooks asked students to calculate their age “in dog years.” And who can forget those Alpo commercials from the 1970s with actor Lorne Green telling us, “Duchess is 13. That’s like 91 to you and me.”

Chanel wore tinted goggles (“doggles”) for her cataracts, loved peanut butter and ate home-cooked boiled chicken and whole-wheat pasta with her dog food along with “a specially selected soft treat designed for her ancient teeth.” And she enjoyed romantic walks in the summer, relaxing at home, and hated dishonest people.

Owner Denice Shaughnessy was a soldier in the U.S. Army when she adopted Chanel from a Virgina shelter more than 20 years ago, for her daughter, LaToya. When Denice met Karl Shaughnessy, and married him, they settled on Long Island and over the years had three other dachsunds…Chanel outlived them all.

Again, no foul play is suspected.

Chanel became the world’s oldest dog last spring when a 28-year-old beagle from Virginia died and went to doggy heaven.

It’s lucky Chanel was adopted so early and thus named at an early age. I’m guessing by the time she turned 21, “Chanel” was the last thing you’d think of naming her.

Ironically, it was Karl Shaughnessy who discovered that the Guinness Book didn’t have a category for world’s oldest dog, so he contacted them and sent Chanel’s birth certificate showing her birth date: May 6, 1988. When NBC’s The Today Show featured Chanel’s 21st birthday celebration this past May, Chanel was presented with an official certificate declaring her as the world’s oldest living canine, scheduling her to be be listed in the 2010 edition of Guinness World Records this October.   Oops. What do we do now?

Well, there’s another dog named Max who might actually be the world’s oldest dog. Owner Janelle Derouen claims Max celebrated his 26th birthday this past August. Guinness World Records officials are looking into the claim. No foul play is yet suspected.

The oldest dog that ever lived however (whose age could be verified) was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey. Bluey died in 1939, at the age of 29 years, 5 months.

Now then, onto the business of calculating how old a dog is in years comparable to a human being’s. Many people have applied the rather simplistic formula of one dog year = 7 human years. This may be a fairly accurate rate for a dog’s middle years, but it is a misrepresentation of the early and later years. The problem with this approach is that it doesn’t account for a lot of other variables:
1. Dogs reach adulthood much sooner than humans do.
2. A dog’s size. Generally, smaller dogs live longer than big dogs.
3. Different breeds of dogs have different life expectancies. Bulldogs average about 7 years, and Great Danes usually live to be 8.5 years. Miniature Poodles on the other hand have an average life expectancy close to 15 years.
4. And then, we have to think about the point of comparison: What is a human’s life expectancy? Worldwide life expectancy for humans is about 66 years, whereas in developed countries it can be 80.

Humans born in 1901 had a life expectancy of 49 years. Dogs also have experienced a longer life expectancy even over the last few years: In 1987, 32% of dogs lived more than six years. Now, about 44% do.

A more accurate approximation of dog/human years goes something like this:
10.5 dog years per human year for the first 2 years, then 4 dog years per human year for each successive year.
Another formula says to allow 15 years for the first year of a dog’s life, and then 9 years for the second year, and then 4 years for each year after that.

Even better though, here is a chart that shows the ratio depending on weight (which of course also represents different breeds of dogs) as well as age:

And let’s not confuse the term “dog years” with the phrase “dog days,” which since ancient times referred to that period in late summer (like now) when the “Dog Star” (Sirius) used to rise along with our Sun.  And let’s not confuse that “Dog Star” with the name of the grunge rock band “Dog Star” whose lead guitarist is Keanu Reeves, who once had an uncredited role as Ortiz the Dog Boy, in a 1993 comedy film called “Freaked” directed by directed by Tom Stern and Alex Winter, who co-starred with Reeves in the Bill & Ted movies.

De qualquer forma não é para falar de vírus que viemos aqui! Se vocês, leitores desocupados assíduos, tiveram um pouquinho de curiosidade para ver o ditado que estampa o título desse post, já sacou o que há de encontrar nas próximas linhas imaginárias, neh!?

É exatamente sobre essa tendência que me refiro. Assim como todas as espécies, o ser humano também evolui! Isso ocorre não só psicologicamente mas, principalmente, fisicamente, para melhor adaptação do organismo ao seu habitat natural. Em resumo…há quem diga que no futuro homens e mulheres não terão muita diferença física (felizmente já estarei morto quando esse dia chegar!!!)…parece assustador, não?! Isso tornará cenas como essa muito frequentes, vejam:

Como tenho certeza que vcs nunca iriam adivinhar…vou logo revelando que a protagonista da foto acima é simplesmente nada mais nada menos que o filho a filha da Madonna! Surpresos não?! Dizem as más línguas que foi um caso aí que a cantora teve com um lobisomem…

É claro que existe tb aquelas que mantém o bigodinho como “charme” neh…o “bigodinho” da foto abaixo, por exemplo, assim como a barba e a dona, estão no Guinness Book como a Mulher Mais Barbada do Mundo! E ai…tem coragem????

Ho Eng Hui, mestre de Kung Fu de 55 anos, tentando entrar para o Guinness Book (livro dos recordes), furou em pouco mais de 30 segundos 4 cocos utilizando apenas de seu dedo indicador em um evento na Malásia.

“Isso não é uma ilusão ou magia negra. Sou capaz de fazer isso após aprender a dominar a técnica da arte marcial chinesa, usando apenas a força do meu dedo”, disse o mestre, que terminou com dores na mão.

Bom, meu único comentário quanto a isso, é que eu teria muito cuidado ao passar ao lado desse cara na rua. Vai saber onde ele enfiaria esse dedo pra bater mais um novo recorde.

There’s a very popular children’s cartoon character in Japan called 「それいけ！アンパンマン」 (“Go! Anpanman“).

2009 has been a big year for 「アンパンマン」 (Anpanman) and for his artist Takashi Yanase.

This year, Takashi Yanase turned 90 years old, he’s been a professional artist for 60 years, the 「アンパンマン」 (Anpanman) comic started 40 years ago, and the 「アンパンマン」 (Anpanman) television series started 20 years ago. (Click here to see an earlier post I wrote about this).
And now, 「それいけ！アンパンマン」 (“Go! Anpanman“) is in the Guinness Book Of World Records for having the “Most Characters In A Single Animated Series“.

「それいけ！アンパンマン」 (“Go! Anpanman“) has over 2000 characters, but the Guinness Book only recognized 1768 characters…which still sets the record as the most characters.

My kids grew up watching 「それいけ！アンパンマン」 (“Go! Anpanman“). It’s a wonderful cartoon for kids!

Sunday proved quite a day for online poker tournaments with two of the worlds biggest online poker rooms going head to head to enter the Guinness Book Of World Records for the world’s largest online poker tournament.

Full Tilt Poker were first out of the block and managed to attract 50 thousand players which smashed PokerStars previous record of 35 thousand.  The worlds largest poker rooms were not going to take this lying down and held their own surprise tournament which attracted 65 thousand players and saw them retain their entry in The Guinness Book Of World Records.

World's Longest Cucumber

An Israeli from Petah Tikvah grew the world’s longest cucumber this summer.  And my rude mind went all a whirl…
