Clement Vallandigham died in 1871 while defending a man in a murder trial - during his demonstration on how the victim could have accidentally shot himself, he actually did shoot himself, not realising that the gun he had been given was loaded. This successful demonstration, while losing him his life, did win him the case.

When two armed robbers entered a Tennessee liquor store and demanded money, an armed customer initiated a gun fight. One robber fled while another collapsed outside the store.

No bystanders were injured and the customer was not charged with any crime.

Murderous? … Not quite. Just terrible especially when you have to write a quiz you know nothing about! Ugh.

TRENTON — Two convicted drug dealers were victims of gun violence this weekend, though city police believe there might be more to their stories, especially from the gangster who may have shot himself in the groin.

In both cases, the victims were said to be combative and uncooperative with police, and in one, police believe the victim may have shot himself.

The first reported victim was Everett Jerome Davis, who told police he was walking in the area of Girard and Mechanics avenues when an unknown man walked up and shot him in the “groin area.”

The shooting occurred at about 12:37 p.m. Friday, after which Davis walked into Capital Health’s Fuld hospital on his own accord. The 27-year-old, known to police as a high-ranking Bloods gangster, underwent emergency surgery for his “groin” injury, and the medical staff called police.

Davis, according to state records, was released from prison on drug and assault charges in March of last year. He described his attacker only as a black male.

But preliminary findings, police said, indicate Davis’ gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted. It would make him Jersey’s version of former New York Giants receiver Plaxico Burress, who shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub and is now serving a prison term.

The second incident took place yesterday at about 3 a.m. in the area of Merchant and Stockton streets.

Police said Ozzia Shakeem Tift, 34, told investigators that he was walking with his wife when an unknown man walked up and shot him in the knee. Police said Tift too was uncooperative with investigators, but that he did say he argued with the suspect prior to the shooting.

Tift also has a lengthy prison record of time served on drug and weapons charges. He was most recently released from prison in July of 2005, according to state records.

Tift underwent surgery to have the bullet removed from his knee, police said, and in both cases, the injuries were not considered life threatening.

Police said Tift described his shooter as a heavyset black male, about 5-foot-5, and said he wore a yellow hooded sweatshirt at the time.

BREAKING NEWS- The AP is reporting that four police officers were shot and killed Sunday morning in what authorities called a targeted ambush at a coffee-house in Washington state, a sheriff’s official said.

A gunman burst into a Washington state coffeehouse Sunday and opened fire on four police officers as they sat working on their laptops, killing the three men and one woman in what an official described as a targeted ambush.

Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said officers were looking for one male suspect who fled on foot, but haven’t ruled out an accomplice.

Troyer said the four officers killed — all from the Lakewood Police Department — were catching up on paperwork at the beginning of their shifts when they were attacked at 8:15 a.m. Sunday.

Troyer said the attack was clearly targeted at the officers, not a robbery gone bad.

“There were marked patrol cars outside and they were all in uniform,” Troyer said.

“This was more of an execution. Walk in with the specific mindset to shoot police officers,” Troyer said.

A Pierce County manhunt is now under way, Sgt. Ed Troyer, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman, said all available officers are combing several potential crime scenes, including one on Pacific Highway where a suspect’s pickup truck reportedly was abandoned.

Families of the officers have been notified, Troyer said. All of the officers — three males and a female — were in uniform, wearing vests and had marked patrol cars parked outside, he said.

A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, Troyer said.

Police are looking for one man in connection with the attack, which happened at about 8 a.m., Troyer said. The suspect is described as an African-American man, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black coat and blue jeans, with a “scruffy” appearance, he said. The man is believed to have fled the coffee shop on foot, he said.

Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a second person was involved in the attack, Troyer said.

There were no known threats lodged against any of the officers murdered, nor any against the police department at large.

“We don’t have any threat, we don’t have any targeted people,” Troyer told reporters, having no answer to the question of why the officers were singled out.”Chances are there is not going to be a good answer. There is not an answer that makes any sense.”

This whole dream was bright and colourful, like a kid’s cartoon show. I was an animal of some kind (I don’t think I’d been turned into one, it was more like this was my natural state) and I lived with all the other animals in a forest/jungle. The start of the dream is quite hazy but I remember a feeling of peace and happiness. This harmony was shattered though because the dragons and the wolves were going to have a war.

The dragons had always been outcasts who kept to themselves. I don’t know how they had fallen out with the wolves but the rest of us were not involved at all. These dragons weren’t huge like the dragons in cartoons, they were more like big lizards who stood on their back feet. They were probably about the size of a person, maybe smaller.

Everyone was apprehensive about the war because we were afraid we’d get dragged into it or our homes would be destroyed. For this reason, on the day of the first battle, we were all hiding underground. We were hiding under some wooden floorboards and we could look through the slits. We saw the armies of the dragons and the wolves approaching each other (the wolves also stood on their hind legs). At this point it all kicked off and we ran further away from the battle.

At some stage during the battle, an army of humans arrived. I don’t think they had any idea that there was already a war going on between the animals. I’m pretty sure they were just trying to invade whatever country we lived in. This caused everyone, wolves and dragons included, to run as far away as they could and as fast as they could from the humans. The smallest animals were the most scared as they knew the humans would trample on them without even noticing.

I think I was an animal that could swim because I was suddenly swimming in an underground lake with a frog I knew. We surfaced to find ourselves right under a wooden bridge the humans were running across. We had to keep ourselves perfectly still and not disturb the water in case they saw us. We could hear them shouting to each other and I saw them load their guns before running across the bridge.

That’s the last bit I remember but I know the dream was much longer and much more detailed than that.

Black Friday

A set of headlights hopped across the parking lot as a black Escalade hit the entrance from the street. Janice nudged Linda who was sitting in the passenger’s seat of her Navigator.

“This is it.”

“What if they don’t get out right away?”

“Nuh-uh; no you don’t. Get out. We were here first; but we have to—”

“It’s cold though; and wet.”

Janice grabbed her extra-large-regular. She was upset they didn’t have what she wanted as a free sample of Dunkie’s that early in the morning. It was advertised.

“Get out Lin, or they’ll be first.”

The girls got out. Janice fobbed the car as they double-timed it to the doors of what used to be a K-Mart. Those letters had been replaced with DOMINIC’S DISCOUNT ELECTRONICS. She could still see the cleaner parts of the building where the K-Mart name had been.

They beat out the couple from the Escalade by a few steps and then exchanged awkward greetings. One of the new arrivals looked to be the daughter of the other. They had the same shoulder length black hair.

Janice glanced at her watch; it was three-thirty. “According to the flyer I got in the mail, the doors open at four AM on Black Friday.” She sipped from her coffee and said, “I wouldn’t mind if they opened a little early.” She cupped a hand to her temple, trying to see inside. The glass door had been blacked-out so she could see nothing.

Linda said, “I never get up this early. This is kind of crazy.”

Janice looked at her while sipping more coffee. “No it’s not. Think of it: forty percent off GPS navigation, thirty-five percent off 52” LCD televisions, and they carry a line of Coach at fifty percent off.”

The older woman next to Linda said, “They have Coach? Wow.” To her daughter she said, “Did you hear that sweetie?”

“Yes mom.” She was looking at Janice as if Janice had just punched her mom. A black cloud formed over her.

“Sorry,” Janice said. “I spilled the beans, didn’t I?”

Other cars were showing up in ones and twos. The people coming to the door were mostly women. At first they formed a line, but as more showed up at the door from different parts of the parking lot, the line turned into a mob.

Someone next to Janice stepped on the lace of her sneaker and it was untied. She said, “I have to tie my sneaker. I’m going to sit. Hold my coffee Linda?”

She sat with her back against the building, trying to tie her sneaker with her oversized purse still on her shoulder when it happened.

The doors unlocked and swung in.

The herd began to move. Janice pressed her feet against the concrete, pushing her back into the building so she wouldn’t get knocked over and trampled. Several shoppers tripped over her feet but stayed up. As the doors swung shut she caught a glimpse inside.

It was dark; very few lights were on. The man who opened and closed the door had a ponytail and a week’s growth on his face. He wore a black leather vest. As he closed the door, something swung from his shoulder. It looked like a gun. It looked like a fake gun because it was all black; a movie prop perhaps.

Janice was the only one outside. With her sneaker tied, she rolled to her side and got up. After straightening her jacket, she tried the door. It was locked and her heart sank. She was alone. Several ramp trucks pulled into the parking lot and positioned to carry away cars that had only just arrived.

Janice began to worry. Linda was inside and the doors were locked. Her Navigator was in the lot and cars were being hauled away. Everything was wrong.

Suddenly, what could only be the sound of gunfire erupted on the other side of the doors. There had to be several guns from the sound of it. Janice lurched back, whimpered, and then got down to a crouch.

The gunfire dwindled down to single shots here and there and Janice fled from the front of the building. Fobbing her car door after a frantic search in her purse, she got in. Her eyes welled up and a tear turned black with mascara before it raced to her jaw line. She didn’t understand what was going on. The one thing she understood was that a lot of people were on the inside when the guns were being fired. Linda was inside. She was supposed to be in there as well, but she stopped to tie her shoelace.

She noticed two men in black reaching from the roof of the building. They were removing the black letters that spelled out DOMINIC’S DISCOUNT ELECTRONICS. The last car to be hauled away was the black Escalade the mother and daughter had arrived in.

Janice was found alone in the parking lot later that day. She couldn’t say what happened. She couldn’t say anything at all for quite some time.

Did you notice the Dunkie’s link in the story?

Pay close attention. At roughly 36 seconds we see Asimov’s laws going out the window. We’re pretty sure we saw this little autonomous battle bot take a shot at a human. We can’t tell for sure, but it looked like it enjoyed it too.

This bot is being built by [xdream] to compete in the Mech Warfare section of the Robo Games 2010. His target acquisition system and firing are completely autonomous. We think his motion is controlled by an operator though.

This little fellow may seem harmless enough, until you realize that those servos and guns could be replaced and this “little guy” becomes that “big fella”. That’s not anything the maker suggested, we’re just pointing out that a killer robot is only cute when it’s small.
