My heart goes out to the victims families in this holiday season.  But no doubt the gun control advocates will be calling for stronger laws to make the purchasing of handguns more difficult.  When in reality these laws impede the rights of others to defend themselves.  It is not the fault of the gun for a tragic murder such as this, but the fault of the gunmen.

PARKLAND, Wash. – A gunman walked into a coffee shop and shot and killed four police officers Sunday morning in what sheriff’s officials described as an “execution.”

The officers were sitting in the cafe at a strip mall near the Tacoma suburb of Parkland with their laptop computers, preparing for their day shifts, when a man came in and opened fire, Pierce County Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.

The officers were obviously targeted because they were in full uniform and no one else was shot at, Troyer said.

“This was more of an execution. He walked in with the mind of shooting police officers,” Troyer said.

It wasn’t immediately known if any of the officers were able to return fire. They were declared dead at the scene.

Troyer said two employees and a few customers were in the Forza Coffee Company shop at the time but no one else was hurt. “As you can imagine they are all traumatized,” Troyer said.

Authorities scoured the area for the gunman, who is believed to have fled on foot or by car. The suspect was described as a “scruffy”-faced black man in his 20s or 30s, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 10, wearing a black coat ands blue jeans.

“We are in the process of searching multiple locations,” Troyer said.

Nearby McChord Air Force Base was put on alert.

No advance threats
The victims were three males and one female, all officers with the Lakewood Police Department southwest of Tacoma, Troyer said.

There were no specific advance threats against the officers, Troyer said.

A $10,000 reward was being offered for information leading to those responsible.

With no known suspects, there was no indication of any connection with the Halloween night shooting of a Seattle police officer. The suspect in that shooting remains hospitalized.

The Forza coffee shop, part of a popular local chain, is on a side street near McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, about 35 miles south of Seattle. The shop is in a small retail center alongside two restaurants, a cigar store and a nail salon.

Brad Carpenter, founder and owner of Forza Coffee, said his staff was OK and being interviewed by police, and that his main concern was with the families of the police officers.

“I’m a retired police officer, so this really hits close to home for me,” he said.

Streets around the coffee shop were blocked off late Sunday morning, and a police helicopter hovered over a large crowd of investigators. TV video showed police taking possession of a pickup truck parked in a grocery store in Parkland.

Dave Gabrielson, a clerk at Foot Mart about a block away from the coffee shop, told The News Tribune of Tacoma all was quiet when he opened the store at 8 a.m. About 30 minutes later, “All of a sudden a million cops were zooming up and down the road,” Gabrielson said.

He said he saw officers bring a police dog into a nearby apartment complex.

Seattle police shooting
On Oct. 31, Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton was shot and killed Halloween night as he was sitting in a cruiser with trainee Britt Sweeney. Sweeney was grazed in the neck.

Authorities say the man charged with that shooting also firebombed four police vehicles in October as part of a “one-man war” against law enforcement. Christopher Monfort, 41, was arrested days after the Seattle slaying after being shot by officers surrounding an apartment complex south of Seattle where he was staying. He remains hospitalized and is reportedly paralyzed from the waist down.

Gunmen killed a Pakistani working at the Iranian Consulate in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Thursday, adding to security fears in the country as it presses an offensive against the Taliban along the nearby Afghan border.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack, which follows the abduction of an Iranian diplomat in Peshawar in November 2008. He remains a hostage.

Iran is mostly a Shiite Muslim country. The victim was also a Shiite Muslim. Sunni Muslim militants like the Taliban and al-Qaida believe Shiites are infidels and often target the sect. In the 1980s, Iran was alleged to have funded radical Shiite groups in the country.

The attackers opened fire on Abul Hasan Jaffri near his home in a central part of Peshawar, police official Mohammad Kamal told The Associated Press.

Jaffri, who was the director of public relations at the consulate, died at a military hospital, he said. The gunmen escaped after the shooting.

Peshawar is one of Pakistan’s most dangerous cities and a hotbed of militant and criminal activity.

In 2008, gunmen ambushed a car carrying the Afghan consul toward his home in Peshawar, killing the driver and abducting the envoy, who was had recently been selected as the next ambassador to Pakistan. He has also not been released. Suspected militants killed a U.S. aid worker there last year.

Peshawar has been the target of several of the attacks sweeping the country in recent weeks in apparent retaliation for the offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan.

A car bombing in a crowded market outside Peshawar on Tuesday killed 26 people. A suicide bomber killed three policemen in Peshawar on Monday, and a similar attack a day earlier on a market outside the city killed 12 people, including a mayor who once supported but had turned against the Taliban.

Jonestown was a settlement in Guyana, South America. Founded in the early 1970s by religious cult and socialist group, The Peoples Temple. The population peaked in 1978 at over 900 residents. The temple’s leader, Jim Jones, had billed it to his followers as ‘the promised land’ and ‘paradise on earth’. However, those who went to live there told a different story of armed guards, meagre rations and brutal discipline. Several tried to escape as Jones forbid people to leave. Those who made it back to the United States told harrowing stories. One woman who escaped warned that a mass suicide of everyone in the camp was planned. Concerned relatives of people in the group convinced an American Congressman, Leo Ryan, to make a trip to Jonestown. He left with some of these relatives and news crews on November 14. By the evening of November 18 Congressman Ryan was lying dead on an airstrip. After a fairly uneventful visit to the settlement, several residents had come forward to either Ryan or his aide, Jackie Speier, or had approached one of the news crews to say they wanted to leave. Though giving the appearance that he was ok with it, Jones did not want anyone to leave and began to put his final plan into action. Ryan was attacked, but unhurt, by a Jonestown resident wielding a knife, then he, Speier, the news crews and defectors all departed Jonestown. They were bound for the nearest airstrip to fly to Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city. As they boarded the waiting planes a tractor-trailer containing some of Jones’s most loyal followers arrived and the men inside began shooting at the Ryan party. Leo Ryan, defector Patricia Parks, photographer Greg Robinson and NBC cameraman Bob Brown and news reporter Don Harris were all killed by the gunfire. Jackie Speier, reporter Tim Reiterman and NBC sound engineer Steve Sung were among nine injured, Speier critically. Back in Jonestown Jones was commanding his followers, who were surrounded by armed guards, to take cyanide poison, mixed with flavor-aid drink. Some took the potion willingly, but many were forced. The event was captured on audiotape. There were only nine people who were in Jonestown as the poison was being taken and survived. 916 died including Jones, who was killed by a gunshot to the head, his wife Marceline and some of his children. At the temple’s headquarters in Georgetown temple loyalist Sharon Amos shut herself in the bathroom with her three children and slit their throats. After the mass murder/suicide the remaining members closed down the movement. Jonestown stayed deserted until the Guyanese government allowed Hmong refugees from Laos to live there for a few years during the early 1980s. By the late 1980s the buildings of Jonestown were virtually destroyed in a fire and what was left was abandoned and has since, mostly, been reclaimed by the jungle. Thanks for reading.

I see we have another attack on American service personnel and their families and it’s from someone of the Muslim decent.

We are told that the Muslim community does not condone the actions of radicals within their midst.  Isn’t it time they make a louder statement to show this?

I for one am tired of being told I have nothing to fear from those of this group.

Dopo essermi gustato l’intera serie con il favoloso doppiaggio giapponese (sottotitolata) non posso che avere parole di elogio per la Gainax che ha spremuto lo spirito dei vecchi cartoni robot giapponesi riproponendo un opera in maniera ancora più esaltante e divertente. La storia non sarà quello che può sembrare dalle prime puntate.

I più amatori del fumetto e dei vecchi anime non potranno che apprezzare lo stile fumettistico di molte scene (vedi seconda immagine sopra), mentre dovrete dimenticare la vostra razionalità e le vostre critiche adulte su “questo non è fisicamente possibile” ecc.. Lasciate prendervi dalla passione e dalla fantasia dela storia. L’anime infatti non ha quello stile robotico all’ Evangelion, che propone un ipotetico futuro e una ipotetica tecnologia avanzatissima ma credibile, questo che avete davanti è tutt’altro, un anime in stile Shin Getter Robot The Last Day, d’ azione, di passione, schizzato e divertente, ma mai eccessivo ed a volte commovente. E come nella migliore tradizione dei bei cartoni giapponesi il cattivo non è mai il cattivo per antonomasia ed ogni personaggio ha una sua umanità e un suo senso logico, da questo non ne può che beneficiarne la storia che diventa appassionante e seguibile.

Ed infine voglio elogiare l’animazione che è semplice, dinamica e veloca. Non si spreca nei dettagli e ricorda quello stile anni 80 di Mazinga o Jeeg Robot, le trasformazioni, le unioni. I robot hanno le loro “espressioni” e danno forma al carisma del pilota, praticamente agli antipodi cè Patlabor. Le musiche, molto belle. Il finale mi ha commosso.

Al momento sta andando in onda sul digitale terrestre di Rai4, ma a novembre dovrebbe uscire anche il DVD in italiano della prima metà della serie.

È stato prdotto anche il lungometraggio come potete vedere dal primo trailer qua sotto, ma non consiglio di guardarlo se non prima di essersi gustati tutte le 27 puntate. Il lungometraggio non è altro che un riassunto della prima metà della serie senza variazioni significative però molti aspetti ed episodi divertenti vengono a mancare. Le scene dei combattimenti finali contro i tre generali rimasti che nella storia sono separate, nel lungometraggio si svolgono in un unico contemporaneo duello, è l’unica differenza.

US psychologist Peter Langman votes against the prohibition of so-called “killer games”. Gunmen are homicidal maniacs, games with explicit contents would not bear the blame.

I could not believe it, as I was doing my morning surf of the web looking for relevant industry news on what is going on in the housing industry across the country I come across a short blurb from the Aldine/North Houston News

Unfortunately, this is a very short article of only 116 words – but powerful words that got me to sit up straight in my chair and take notice. Powerful enough for me to put out a warning – not only to my own team and office but to everyone in the real estate industry that reads what I share.

The short version is that 3 people went to a vacant home for sale at 8 o’clock t night, 2 were let in and then ambushed once inside by a pair of armed gunmen. They were robbed at gun point. When the crooks fled, apparently they were not counting on the 3rd person waiting outside by the car – a woman whom the thieves shot in their get-a-way. The woman was treated for a non-life threatening injury – but just the same, she got shot looking at a house she wanted to buy. The bad guys got away.

I wish there might have been another 100 words or so top answer some of the questions I have. Apparently the woman was the sister to one of the men and the other was a friend that they wanted to show the home to. The article says ‘another man’ let the pair in. He later disappeared and has not been found.

So who is this ‘other guy? A bona-fide agent…or? Was he in cahoots with the bad guys? What kind of neighborhood was this…multiple-million dollar homes – working class neighborhood or inner city ghetto?

Does it matter? No, what matters is your safety – so please be careful whenever approaching a vacant home.

The Hatchetmen

Hatchetmen: killers, gunmen…

One of the first villains created for the Crime Buster! universe were The Hatchetmen. These gunmen were efficient and calculating killers.  Who they are no one knows (actually, we do but we’re not telling!). They use all manner of weapons to accomplish their objectives and are very formidable opponents as Stony soon discovers. Hector felt it was fitting for these killers to wear the “smiley face” masks to hide their identities. We’ve heard comments raging from pure love of the masks to absolute hatred of them (too reminiscent of The Watchmen graphic novel).

The Hatchetmen take on a very weird and eerie look as they fight and kill, all the while wearing these seemingly happy faces. On one visual Hector described to me, one Hatchetman emerges from a burning hallway with the happy face mask clearly dominant in the panel. That is a drawing I would love to see very soon.

For the updated look of these characters (remember, they were created 11 years ago), Hector came up with the idea of changing the happy faces to something more akin to computer Smiley Codes. I like this idea. It’s different. What do you think? Feel free to comment.

Police want more backing for work to bring action against gunmen sheltered by big names

For Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, the most crucial task lying ahead is how to deal with the case involving the assassination attempt on media tycoon Sondhi Limthongkul. This is the source of the unstable political undercurrents which can resurface at anytime. If Abhisit fails to deal with this issue decisively, he might become a victim again

Twice Abhisit has been the target of attack, with the first in April at the Pattaya Summit and the second at the Interior Ministry. Abhisit narrowly escaped with his life.

Then, red-shirted protesters mounted an all-out blitz against Bangkok in order to pave the way for an abrupt and radical political change through a coup. That plot failed to materialise.

Shortly afterward, the target was shifted to Sondhi, the leader of the yellow-shirted People’s Alliance for Democracy. The murder attempt was aimed at cutting down Sondhi in order to create a political vacuum and again a coup. Miraculously, Sondhi survived the daring shooting during the declaration of a state of emergency over Bangkok. Once again, the dark plot did not work as planned. Strangely enough, Abhisit has done virtually nothing to counter his enemies. Those responsible for the security affairs of this country still hold on to their positions and their power is unchanged.

Pol General Thanee Somboonsap has been assigned to get to the bottom of the assassination plot against Sondhi. This probe has been going on over the past two months and a half. The investigation points to men in uniform playing a central role in the assassination attempt.

Behind these gunmen are many of the big names, including a lady of high political standing, who wield influence in this country. They have bunched together as an alliance to bring down the Abhisit government and foil the yellow shirts’ ambition to become a new force of Thai politics.

Thanee is pretty upset that he has not got all the necessary political backing for the completion of his investigation into the Sondhi assassination attempt. One report had it that he used rather strong words against Abhisit for not acting resolutely to help him finish up his work that would lead to the arrests of the masterminds.

In other words, Thanee has hit a big “pole”, which obstructs his progress. Only Abhisit, as the prime minister, has the power to move this pole out of the way. Abhisit’s reply was that he would try his best.

Senator Khamnoon Sithisamarn has written in Manager Online that probably Abhisit needs to exercise more leadership by sacking Pol Chief Patcharawat Wong- suwan if he would like stay on course.

In the latest development, Abhisit has finally agreed not to fully trust his deputy Suthep Thaugsuban. If that were the case, he would have to rely more on the advice of the elder generation like Chuan Leekpai or even Banyat Bandatan. Suthep did not stop police from bringing charges of terrorism against the PAD’s members, including Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.Police called Suthep up to ask if he would mind if they included Kasit on the list of “suspects” in an act of terrorism in the aftermath of the Suvarnabhumi Airport blockade. The charge of “terrorism” is very serious. But Suthep did not raise any objection. This could imply that he gave the green light for police to take on Kasit and the PAD.

If the charge of terrorism against Kasit and the PAD members were to reach the courts, the ramifications would be far-reaching. Other Democrats who appeared onstage during the PAD rallies against the Somchai government last year might also be caught in the same net. Abhisit would also have to bear the consequences for having appointed “Kasit the Terrorist” to the Cabinet. There is a dark plot behind the Kasit case.

Abhisit has yet to use his power as prime minister to his full advantage. He has been afraid to exercise his authority. If he continues to be afraid to throw his weight around, his political enemies will go after him again. If he fails to send his people to key positions in the police and military, he will be running a shaky government, which is poised to be toppled at any moment.

Abhisit still has this sliver of opportunity to act and salvage his premiership. It is now or never.
