While I consider myself a science fiction/fantasy fan, I must admit that, realistically, I’m more of a fan of fantasy.  My taste in science fiction reading is fairly limited.  I am not nearly as enamored of “hard” sci-fi: pages of realistic and scientifically feasible explanations of how the featured Mechawidget actually works.  I’m really just into good futuristic yarns.  This may be why I tend to watch more science fiction movies and TV than read science fiction books.  That and it has been far too long since a good fantasy movie has been made.  For good, old-fashioned, pulpy, space adventure, you can’t get much better than David Gunn’s Death’s Head series.

The series centers on Sven Tveskoeg: ex-legionnaire, ex-sergeant, and now-troublesome officer in the Death’s Head.  The Death’s Head is the elite military unit in service to the emperor OctoV.  If villages need to be razed, planets decimated, or prisoners tortured–guess who gets called…  With their amorality and their skull-adorned black uniforms the reader will very much get a Nazi Special Forces vibe…this is intentional.  The deadly and vicious Sven is an up-and-comer in the Death’s Head…and he is the hero of our story.

Little is known of Sven’s background before he was sentenced to death for insubordination in the emperor’s Legion Etranger.  However, it is soon revealed that there is much more to Sven that meets the eye.  He is a huge and imposing man who has the ability to heal at an accelerated rate (ala Wolverine).  He also, though at great cost, seems to have the ability to communicate with the bestial ferox…a tribal race of beings for which there has been no communication, only warfare.  He is apparently 98.2 percent human and 1.8 percent…something else.  It is also clear (to the reader, and later to Sven) that his “otherness” is being put to use by the mysterious and god-like OctoV for his own secret purposes.  It is these machinations that prompt his recruitment into the corps of the Death’s Head.

Sven is, by nature, a scrapper.  He often uses violence as his most elegant form of self-expression.  He’s lived a hard life and definitely has no qualms on making life harder on those who cross his path.  While cold-blooded and ruthless, he nevertheless has a streak of fierce loyalty.  It is this stubborn nascent nobility that eventually forces him to take on the leadership of the Aux (auxiliary), a rag-tag group of misfit conscripts that lost their leader in a bloody, and ultimately senseless, battle that ends the first book in the series.  He is an anti-hero in every way…a bad guy fighting his way through a universe of worse guys. 

In many ways he reminds me of the type of character that Robert E. Howard would have created: strong, brutal, inherently masculine, noble, and primal.  The entire series hearkens back to the old pulp novels with their violence, blatant sexuality, and testosterone-driven plots.  Furthermore, the stories are just plain fun.  You find yourself rooting for Sven even as he brutally slaughters hundreds of people, even more so when he gives various smug adversaries their necessary comeuppance.  There are definitely interesting new technologies being explored here (primarily in the form of weapons) and some interesting socio-political situations that can spring from societies in which death can simply be an inconvenience (for the rich and powerful, at any rate).  However, Sven is the type of hero who would be as at home on the plains of Cimmeria or in the temples of Zamora as he would be in the cockpit of starship or on the field interstellar battle. 

Gunn’s writing is brisk and sure.  The novels are told from Sven’s point of view…and he doesn’t have time to examine the minutia of how things work or even why.  He’s trying to stay alive and a step ahead.  There is humor, but it is of a decidedly grim quality.  Much of it comes from the “mouth” of the SIG Diablo…a sentient (and highly illegal) gun that Sven acquires.  The SIG is good and he knows it…and isn’t afraid to say so.  He is probably the only being able to match Sven’s thirst for violence and makes a perfect partner for him.  In the hands of other writers, the SIG could easily come off as hokey, almost as a Disney-esque sidekick (though admittedly darker).  Instead it meshes perfectly within Gunn’s dark vision of a war-torn universe. 

The first novel (Death’s Head) details Sven’s escape from execution at the hands of his own unit, his strange living arrangements with his ferox liberators, his recruitment and testing by the Death’s Head, his fateful choice to not assassinate the daughter of a fellow ex-prisoner, and his recruitment of the Aux.  The second book (Maximum Offense) details the further adventures of Sven and his Aux and the machinations of the United Free, the most powerful and technologically advanced civilization in the known universe. 

A third book has also been released (Day of the Damned), though I have yet to read that one.

Charles Manson é neto de Charles Milles Maddox, maquinista da B&O Railroad, e Loraine Nancy Ingram Maddox, uma devota cristã Nazarena, ambos de Morehead, em Kentucky. Manson nasceu durante os tempos difíceis da Grande Depressão. Charles Manson, que seus antepassados e membros da família estão no registro de combates na Revolução Americana de Independência, na Guerra Civil Americana, Primeira Guerra Mundial, Segunda Guerra Mundial e Guerra da Coréia, foi negado o seu direito constitucional de se defender em um tribunal de justiça e recebeu a pena de morte por crimes que ele não cometeu e nunca foi acusado de ter cometido. A pena de morte no estado da Califórnia foi anulada, e Manson foi condenado à prisão perpétua, com possibilidade de liberdade condicional.

Charles Manson esteve injustamente preso pelos últimos 40 anos. Antes da sua última libertação da prisão, no Equinócio da Primavera de 1967, Manson já havia cumprido 22 anos trancado atrás das grades desde que ele colocou fogo em sua escola aos 9 anos de idade. Alguns dos lugares onde Manson viveu durante esses tempos foram o Natural Bridge Honor Camp, National Training School for Boys, em Washington DC, Federal Reformatory, Petersburg Federal Reformatory e Chillicothe Federal Reformatory. Manson foi criado principalmente por veteranos aposentados, que trabalhavam nessas instituições. O presidente Nixon, que declarou Manson culpado “direta ou indiretamente” pelos assassinatos de agosto de 1969, foi um advogado e sabia que o que ele estava fazendo era ilegal – ele condenou Manson antes do julgamento acontecer.

Manson foi envenenado, queimado com produtos químicos, espancado, teve costelas e dentes quebrados, passou dias amarrado, foi torturado, incendiado, usado pelo sensacionalismo dos meios de comunicação há 40 anos e amaldiçoado pelos astros de Hollywood. Mas Charles Manson sobreviveu, em pé, para o fogo da eternidade. Ele é o irmão universal de todos os homens que deram as suas vidas no serviço à verdade, honra e justiça.

Esse mês de novembro, ele completou 75 anos de pura vida. Devemos honrar Charles Willis Milles Maddox Mac Manson pelo seu sacrifício, combate, dedicação, coragem, inspiração e amor.

Bryan Gunn was sacked as manager of Norwich City football club today. Just one league game into the season, the Norwich board have decided to disgracefully axe the club legend.With huge debts, practically a new team of players and no manager it is not a great time to be a Norwich City fan.

Where on earth has it all gone wrong for Norwich City? Fifteen years ago ‘the canaries’ were flying high in Europe, smashing Bayern Munich along the way and still the only British club to have beaten Bayern in Munich.

Today Norwich are languishing in the third tier of English football, their first game of this season was a humiliating 7-1 defeat at home to of all clubs Colchester. With the summer transfer window drawing to a close and virtually no transfer funds, even a new manager will not be able to improve or transform his squad.

How can you appoint a manager like Gunn who had no previous experience and then give him the job personally after getting the club relegated? And furthermore how can you appoint a manager and then sack him after one league game at the start of the season? It is crazy.

But Norwich fans will not be surprised, the club has been a shambles for years. Nothing makes sense about the way the board approaches running the club, there have been some horrific manager choices recently including serial failure Glen Roeder and unexperienced former player Peter Grant, all with disasterous consequences ultimately ending in relegation last season.

So to the sacking of Gunn. Once he had been given the job despite fans uproar and huge disagreement, you would expect the board to give him a chance. The 7-1 loss on Saturday was a sham but the fact is it was the first game of the season, there are bound to be a few rusty players and it is tough for a manager to know his best eleven on the first day given the amount of changes there were in the squad. Also, Gunn turned it around on Tuesday night by changing a few players, with Norwich acheiving a very respectable 4-0 away win at Yeovil. Over at the other side of the country Yeovil is certainly not an easy place to win at. Given City’s dreadful cup record it was a fantastic result for the club. So the manager has lost his job on the back of a 4-0 win, how ironic it is then that he was given the job after a 4-0 win earlier in the year.

Hardly surprising though given how poorly the club is run. The owner is a TV chef who is better known for her drunken half time ‘let’s be ‘avin ya’ rants than her boardroom knowledge. Perhaps it really is time for Delia Smith to go before she causes anymore damage, surely it could not get any worse. Yes, Delia has put a lot of money into the club but this does not justify some dreadful decisions and playing in the third tier of English football. Aside from Leeds United, Norwich City are the biggest club in League One and should on this merit run away with it this season. Not many fans believe that is likely to happen.

The only possible salvation would be a big takeover and a decent investment of cash but as always a lot of talk about such things has merely been rubbish in recent months. Another way the club may restore some dignity is if they appoint a great manager to take the reigns and shake up the club, but who in their right mind will want this job now. Anyone who is worthy of a good manager job would not take it and that just leaves Norwich City with the scraps and unsuccessful managers to choose from.

Possible candidates to take over are current caretaker Ian Butterworth, who will be blighted by being part of the Gunn regime, Mark Robins, a former player who has had some success in managing at this level, and the man most City fans would love to have in charge, Aidy Bothroyd. Bothroyd a former academy boss has the skill and the nous to lead a promotion charge but even if he gets the job he will not be able to bring in many players and is pretty much stuck with the current untested City squad.

This is all very worrying for Norwich City and rather than harbouring promotion ambitions, most fans have already given up hope, mid-table may be the best city can get this season, the board needs to rectify this situation quickly or they will have a City riot on their hands.

In 1967, Peter Gunn got the big-screen treatment. Gunn came out six years after the 1958-61 series ended. Craig Stevens even reprised the role, even though all the supporting characters were recast.

Being a movie meant a longer version of the famous Peter Gunn Theme by Henry Mancini. But the main titles may have also been influenced by the main titles that Maurice Binder was doing for the James Bond movies that included a combination of images of women and animation.

Eg hadde først tentamen, så fekk eg reise klokka 12 ettersom at eg var ferdig. Så gjekk eg og Malin ned til Gunn, slappa av litt og bare stressa ut…
Så litt seinare kom Martin og Kristine, mi såg litt på tv når dei kom ned, men etter kvert så gjekk me ut i hagen til Gunn!
Der blei mi kjempelenge forde at det har vert så utrulig fint veir idag, mi har til og med eti pinneis.

Iforregårs så var eg på skulen, reste på jobb rett etterpå! Så når eg var ferdig på jobb så gjekk eg bort til Gunn for å øve på ein sang sammen med Malin, som mi seinare på dagen skulle synge på årsmøte for målaget..
Når mi var ferdig med å synge, som mi forresten tjente 250 kroner på, så gjekk mi tilbake til Gunn, der fant eg kaka mi som eg hadde glømt i ovnen, den blei heilt perfekt! Kristine og Martin laga risbollar og Malin laga sjokolademousse, mmmmm, masse deilig!! Så kom det ein anna fyr ned på litt kaffe og kake, og reiste igjen!
Så åt mi opp sjokolademoussen og så kjørde mi Kristine heim, og var litt til hos Gunn etter det!

Igår så sov eg til klokka 1. eller noke sånt, så reiste eg ned til Gunn!
Mi var der til ca. klokka 9 eller noke! Så reiste mi opp til Malin. Mi spilte Pondus-spillet! Ganske gøy spill egentlig.

Idag har mi vert hos Gunn. Så måtte Malin heim klokka 8, og eg og Martin reiste heim klokka 10.

Ettersom at eg tapte i superkviss så tenkte eg, håffår ikkje liksågodt ha litt sjølvironi og lage ein header utav det!
Og det gjorde eg!

Idag på skulen så var mi på Gautefall, det var utrulig bra føre idag!
Men det eg egentlig skulle sei med skulen var at eg seff blei mobba litt forde at eg tapte mot Malin!
Men eg tåler det!
Hehe…

Nå er eg på jobb, etterpå skal eg til Gunn og så seinare ikveld så skal eg og Malin synge for målaget eller noke sånt! Og sida det er målaget så skal mi synge ein sang som heiter “På Dialekt”
