Yes, like the song.

Moments ago thunder split the sky open, and no that was no allegory. It literally did. The thunder burst sounded like somebody dropped a bomb on me (another catchy tune by the way), then all hell broke loose (or in this case, heaven).  November is the rainy season here and when it rains…well you know the rest. The only difference between a rainy season and a monsoon (besides geographical location) is that a monsoon lasts longer.

At least it is not cold November rain. Bad enough to walk around with your socks soaked and with pants that make you look like you have an enlarged and uncontrollable bladder at least you won’t catch hypothermia.

I hope.

When it gets like this I prefer water resistant/proof coats to umbrellas because:

1. Umbrellas never really protect you from the rain. Waterlogged socks anyone?
2. I always leave them in the first place I sit down.
3. I just look stupid holding one.

And now bright sunshine is here again.

Volvemos con nuestra sección de videos con participación de profesionales del cine y de la moda. Hoy la selección es un monográfico sobre el desaparecido Michael Jackson. “El rey del pop” nos dejó muchos videos en los que ponía una especial dedicación. Algunos eran pequeños cortometrajes, películas sintetizadas en 4 minutos, como el primero de esta serie, Liberian Girl. El último single de su álbum BAD se promocionó con una filmación en la que aparecen muchos amigos de Hollywood del cantante. la nómina es extensa: Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, Carl Weathers, Dan Aykroyd, John Travolta, Steve Guttenberg….

Uno de los últimos que grabó fue You Rock My World en 2001.  Basado en una historia escrita por él mismo y por Paul Hunter, podemos ver en pantalla a actores de la talla de Marlon Brando, Mickey Rourke, Michael Madsen, Chris Tucker, Billy Drago y a la actriz y coreógrafa Kishaya Dudley, que interpreta a la chica que origina toda la trama.

En 1991 John Landis (Granujas a todo ritmo, El príncipe de Zamunda) dirigió un de los más famosos de Jacko, Black or White. Las “celebrities” que hacen acto de presencia son el niño de moda en aquella época por la saga Sólo en Casa, Macaulay Kulkin, en el papel de padres el bonachón Norm de la serie de TV Cheers (George Wendt) y Tess Harper, la modelo Tyra Banks y la artista musical y actriz Cree Summer. Como curiosidad decir que en la canción participa tocando la guitarra Slash de Guns & Roses, y que el riff suena parecido al Hurt So Good de John Cougar Mellencamp.

Perteneciente también al disco Dangerous, In The Closet se proyectó un año más tarde que Black or White. Como respuesta a las dudas sobre su orientación sexual, Michael escribió este “Dentro del armario” en el que hablaba de una relación oculta entre un hombre y una mujer. Para rodar la historia se acompañó de la modelo Naomi Campbell, que despliega sus movimientos más sensuales a lo largo del video. Aunque los coros de la canción se acreditaron a una “Mystery Girl” luego se supo que fueron obra de la princesa Estefanía de Mónaco.

En una reciente entrevista concedida por el guitarrista ha asegurado q sus dias en los Guns llegaron a su fin,ya q no esta dispuesto a una reunion de la legendaria banda de Hard Rock. Slash actualmente se encuentra trabajando en un disco en solitario en el cual cuenta con la participacion de gente como: Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, Iggy Pop, Dave Grohl o Chris Cornell. Esperamos con impacienca su disco.

Die Zeit der funkensprühenden Gitarren und hautengen Kostüme ist vorbei. Hard- und Glam-Rock ist tot und Alice Cooper wohnt auf bei Saturn. Heutzutage muss Rock offenbar filigran und anspruchsvoll sein. Schade eigentlich. War doch in den 70ern und 80ern gar nicht so übel mit Kiss, Guns & Roses usw. (wobei die ja auch alle noch auf Tour sind mehr oder weniger). Immerhin unterhaltsam. Ich habe heute einen gewissen Adam Bomb entdeckt. Der gute Mann hatt mit 16 mal bei Kiss vorgespielt und Guns & Roses hatten berlegt ihn zu fragen ob er bei ihnen mitspielen wolle. Naja letztendlich hat der gute Mann solo “Karriere gemacht”. Zumindest fürs Logo reichts noch. Am 3. März 2010 kommt er dorthin. Am 19.11. spielt er schon in der Kieler Schaubude. Wenn man sich mal die Videos anschaut, macht Adam Bomb ziemlich klischeehafte Musik. Er hat in seinen Videos stets eine funkensprühende Gitarre im Gepäck und seine Texte Handeln von Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n Roll. Dazu sieht er auch noch ein wenig aus wie Alice Cooper. Ich denke man sollte sich den Mann mal anschauen. Man muss ihn ja nicht unbedingt volkommen ernst nehmen

El cuarto episodio de los videos con participación “externa” a la musical viene con el común denominador de que esta vez son actores con carisma y veteranía. No todo iban a ser modelos y actrices, pillines.

Comenzamos con el grupo escocés Texas, que en el año 2001 sacó al mercado su recopilatorio de Greatest Hits en el que se incluían dos canciones inéditas, Inner Smile e In Demand. Para el video de esta última contaron con la presencia de Alan Rickman. El actor londinense deja su impronta en el clip, dando una soberbia réplica a la cantante Sharleen Spiteri, que desde la publicación de su superventas White On Blonde en 1996, saca su vena más femenina y sensual. Y es que el video respira un aire de sensualidad total sin caer en los archisobados “juegos carnales”. Una canción que llegó al número 1 en Inglaterra y en Francia, y que tanto me gusta desde entonces.

Seguimos con los escoceses Texas y en esta ocasión con otro video que rodaron en 2003 y que tiene muchas similitudes con el anterior. Para la canción I’ll see it through también escogieron a otro actor, al marroquí de Casablanca pero francés de adopción Jean Reno. De padres andaluces (Sanlúcar de Barrameda y Jerez de la Frontera), su verdadero nombre es Juan Moreno y Herrera Jiménez, pero lo afrancesó traduciendo su nombre de pila y dejando sólo las dos últimas sílabas de su primer apellido. Parece que a Sharleen le gustó que le abrazara Rickman y repitió la experiencia con el actor de películas como León, Ronin, o Los Visitantes. Inspira ternura y fragilidad a partes iguales ver a la pareja cada vez que se mira o se abraza. La voz de Sharleen una vez más hace de esta canción que sea otra de mis favoritas.

El siguiente turno es para los Guns & Roses, que en 1993, cuando la formación daba sus últimos coletazos, editaron Spaguetti Incident?, un álbum de versiones en el que grabaron Since I don’t have you de los Skyliners. En el video aparece un diablo muy sonriente cuyo papel lo interpreta un camaleónico Gary Oldman que está irreconocible. Esta fue la última aparición de Slash como miembro del grupo. El título de la canción no podía ser más premonitorio con la ruptura de uno de las mejores bandas de los 90.

Acabamos con Madonna, con la polémica reina del pop y recientemente calificada como “retrasada” por su ex Guy Ritchie. En 1986 sacaba su disco True Blue en el que incluía una de sus canciones más conocidas Papa Don’t Preach. El video recrea la misma historia que la letra de la canción: una chica que se queda embarazada y que le dice a su padre que no le sermonee. De padre sermoneador hizo Danny Aiello (nominado al oscar en 1989 por Haz lo que debas) y de novio guaperillas Alex McArthur. Obtuvo el premio al mejor video femenino de la MTV en 1987.

Siempre me ha parecido curioso esas reuniones entorno a un niño pequeño dilucidando a quién se parece. “Los ojos son de su padre, pero la nariz y la barbilla son de su madre”. Más gracioso me parece aún, cuando el bebé apenas tiene una horas de vida, y está arrugado como un higo, y todo el mundo empieza a decir, ay que guapo es!, se parece, Paraaaa!, a mi no se te ocurra, que está más arrugado que la cara de los feos de los Calatrava. Pero la finalidad de todo esto, es que ambas familias compitan por llevarse más rasgos del recién nacido para su linaje. Normalmente los hombres tenemos las de perder en estas cuestiones, ya que la suegra normalmente rebaña para su causa hasta las uñas del niño, que seguramente se parezcan a las de su difunta tía emigrante a las Américas. El caso, y el motivo de esta entrada, es que he encontrado un arma eficaz, para que aunque tu niño físicamente no se parezca a ti, en el fondo de su ser sea tu alma gemela.

Y es que navegando por la Red, me he encontrado unos curiosos CDs para bebes. Se trata de música de grandes grupos, adaptada para bebés. El caso es que en Imaginarium el disco más vendido es el Babies Go de AC/DC. Si de AC/DC!!. Como si lo estuviera viendo. Tu niño empieza a dar sus primeros pasos, y de repente empieza a dar el mítico paso del pato (duckwalk), si ese tan famoso de Angus Young, donde pone la pierna recta y empieza a avanzar mientras toca la guitarra. Qué cara de satisfacción se te quedaría!. Ya no harían faltas pruebas de ADN que certificaran que es tu hijo!.  Este si que es de los míos!. El caso es que existen discos como para que el niño cumpla 18, y siga escuchando Cds de este tipo. Muchas de las carátulas están bastante curradas, y tienen su gracia. Abajo os dejo ejemplos que podéis descargar pinchando sobre la carátula del disco en cuestión. Falta algún enlace, que iré completando. Tu hijo ya no llora, está afinando para ser un gran rockero!!.

I found this, “Michael in Bossa”, a tribute album by a collective of Brazilian artists, covering Michael Jackson’s hits rendered in Bossa rhythms (in english). Was quite confused at how it would sound but it works, some more than others but it still sounds good!

Depois de a imprensa dar como praticamente certo o show do Guns N’ Roses no dia 11 de novembro em Taiwan, agora é a vez da Índia especular sobre a ida, ou não da banda para lá…(Matéria completa)

Guns N’ Roses es una banda de hard rock que nació en Los Ángeles, en marzo de 1985. El grupo estaba formado por el cantante Axl Rose, los guitarristas Slash e Yzzy Stradlin, el bajista Duff McKagan, y el baterista Steven Adler. El nombre deriva de la combinación de dos bandas muy importantes en Hollywood, los L.A. Guns y los Hollywood Rose. Su primer concierto tuvo fecha el 6 de junio de 1985 en el Troubador (Hollywood, California). Hasta el momento han vendido 100 millones de copias.

Hollywood Rose fue la banda creada por Jeffrey Isbell (Izzy Stradlin) y William Bruce Rose Jr (Axl Rose) después de dejar Lafayette, Indiana y establecerse en Los Ángeles. Posteriormente se transformaría en una de las bandas más importantes de hard rock de finales de los ochenta e inicios de los noventa: Guns N’ Roses.

Tras su formación en 1985 debutaron como banda en el Troubadour Club, realizando su primera gira llamada The Hell Tour por clubes de Seattle, Portland, Eugene, Sacramento y San Francisco. Dicha gira no llegaron a finalizarla debido a una avería en la furgoneta en la que viajaban que les obligó a regresar a Los Ángeles. Siguieron haciendo actuaciones esporádicas en locales de Hollywood consiguiendo una cierta reputación. Todos vivían y ensayaban en la misma habitación.

Los sellos discográficos se empezaron a interesar por ellos. Su primer mánager oficial fue Vicky Hamilton, la cual les alojó en su apartamento, que destruyeron en poco tiempo. Les consiguió actuaciones y dinero para un equipo decente. Hubo problemas ya que Vicky les exigía mucho más dinero de lo que habían acordado cuando ella invirtió en el grupo, así que prescindieron de ella. Un año más tarde puso un pleito a la banda reclamando un millón de dólares.

Esta banda tuvo su apogeo entre los años 1985 a 1989, los cuales han llamado los años salvajes, donde calaron hondo en la fanaticada de aquellos años estrambóticos. Posteriormente se habla que fueron la banda más peligrosa del mundo entre los años 1990 a 1997, en que lanzaron el “Use your Illusion I” y el “Use your illusion II”, con lo que su popularidad creció. Sin embargo, se tuvo problemas por la adicción a las drogas de algunos de sus integrantes.

Sus famosos discos son: Appetite for Destruction (1987), G N’ R Lies (1998), Use your Illusion I (1991), Use your Illusion II (1991), The Spaghetti Incident (1993), Live Era ’87-’93 (1999), Greatist Hits (2004) y Chinese Democracy (2008)

Lamentablemente la banda se separó, pero sus integrantes hicieron sus propios proyectos. Sin embargo, siempre recordamos al son de sus canciones aquellos años ochenteros en que un Axel Rose eufórico al compás de la guitarra de un Slash misterioso, conjuntamente con el resto de la banda, hacían vibrar a todos los fans, sea donde sea.

Another precious talent bites the dust.

Les Paul was born Lester William Polfuss, in Waukesha, Wis., on June 9, 1915.

The legendary AMAZING talent Les Paul who brought joy to the world with his innovation passed away on August 13, 2009.

He changed Rock & Roll with his lightening guitar rifts and multi-track recording.

His invention paved the way for modern rock ‘n’ roll and became the standard instrument for legends like Pete Townshend and Jimmy Page.

He also developed technology that would become hallmarks of rock and pop recordings, from multitrack recording that allowed for layers and

layers of “overdubs” to guitar reverb and other sound effects.

Paul had made his first attempt at audio amplification at age 13!

He was unhappy with the amount of volume produced by his acoustic guitar, he tried placing a telephone receiver under the strings. Although

this worked to some extent, only two strings were amplified and the volume level was still too low.

By placing a phonograph needle in the guitar, all six strings were amplified, which proved to be much louder. Paul was playing a working

prototype of the electric guitar in 1929.

Les Paul had many hits with his wife Mary Ford.

After their marriage on December 29, 1949, the couple appeared together on their NBC radio program, The Les Paul Show (1949-50), and they had a series of hit records for Capitol Records in the early 1950s.

Les  Paul attained  11 number one singles and 36 gold discs with his wife Mary Ford.

Joan Jett called Mr. Paul a “genius inventor, musical innovator, and a wonderful person”.

She added: “I and everyone at Blackheart Records, mourn the passing of our dear friend, Les Paul.

“Without the advances he pioneered, the recording sciences and the electric guitar would have been left years behind.”

He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1978 and the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The history on this legend is almost too much to handle. Talent like this comes along once in lifetime. At the age of 94 he had an exemplary

life and his accomplishments will live on until the end of time.

A pesquisa era sobre os melhores riffs de guitarra de todos os tempos.

Trains criss-cross the musical landscape like nothing else. Blues, country and jazz are especially prone to a song about trains as the genres were dominant in our culture before the decline of the railroads. And these trains always bear a lot of symbolic freight –  from separations to reunions, deaths to dance moves (remember Little Eva’s LOCOMOTION anyone?). We opened the show with Gove Scrivenor singing I’VE GOT A THING ABOUT TRAINS. Join the club Gove! My Dad was a railway worker and so trains hold a certain sentimental fascination for me too. 

The classic song MYSTERY TRAIN is evocative enough to have inspired one of my favourite films by Jim Jarmusch. How could you go wrong with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Joe Strummer and Tom Waits in the cast? Elvis’ version of the song MYSTERY TRAIN gave the tune a strong injection of optimism but, before the King got hold of it, Little Junior’s Blue Flames made the tune a spooky piece of work.  

Trains have particular resonance in black music: trains to heaven, trains to hell, and trains to freedom. The O’Jays’ LOVE TRAIN is a, very funky, utopian call for global unity. Check out this great video clip: its from the television show ‘Soul Train’ and its the weekly line dance, using the O’Jays music. The year was 1973. Loving the hair, the outfits….

The Staple Singers gospel song, THIS TRAIN, is “bound for glory”, but not, please note, if you’re a gambler or a midnight rambler. Less restricting is Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions with PEOPLE GET READY. And I can’t get enough of  The Ethiopians as they ride an unstoppable bassline all the way to Skaville.  

And, just to prove that songs about Trains are in favour across all genres and generations, Michelle Shocked delivered a goodie that uses the train symbolically: IF LOVE WAS A TRAIN. (According to Michelle, she’d be a slow one –excellent!). Soul Asylum followed with RUNAWAY TRAIN and then it was Sarah McLachlan with the fantastic song TRAIN WRECK from her Afterglow album. Check out this live performance:

We played Arlo Guthrie’s version of THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS. Steve Goodman wrote the song in 1970. He was actually on the train and wrote about what he saw looking out of the window and while playing cards in the club car. Everything in the song happened on the ride. When he returned home he heard that the train was going to be taken out of service, due to a lack of passengers. He reworked the lyrics a bit and used the song to save the train. Arlo Guthrie’s cover in 1972 brought attention to rail lines that were vanishing across middle America when people, who lived in rural areas, relied on trains to travel. 

Railroad songs are populated by a colorful assortment of characters: heroes, outlaws and lovers to name a few. But one of the most enduring, especially in country music, is the humble hobo. The itinerant “wanderer” has been a recurring character throughout history but the railroads presented him with the opportunity to cover vast expanses of territory in relatively little time. For many, the urge to hop a train and ride it as far as it would take them was a form of wanderlust too powerful to resist. For others, the rails offered a way out of desperate situations. Whatever the reason, railroads – and hobos – provided plenty of material for good song lyrics.

Jimmy Rodgers got his material first hand. The son of a railway worker, he went to work as a “water boy” on the trains at age fourteen. His song WAITING FOR THE TRAIN, was recorded in the early 1930s. It captures the hobo’s feelings of loneliness beautifully.  Another hobo classic followed: I GOT THE BOXCAR BLUES from Boxcar Willie.

The Guns & Roses song  NIGHT TRAIN is only slightly connected to Trains. A a tribute to an infamous brand of cheap Californian wine called NIGHT TRAIN EXPRESS, it was extremely popular with the band during their early days – mainly because of its low price and high alcohol content. However, on this clip from a live performance in 1988, they profess in their intro that its not about drugs and drink, but about a ‘walk in the park’. Uh huh. Check it out:

Big Joe Turner is hoping that the MIDNIGHT SPECIAL will bring his baby back to him. And Otis Rush is also a bit despondent: There are SO MANY ROADS and SO MANY TRAINS to ride before he can find his baby again. No matter what the lyrics seem to say, all our train songs today had one thing in common: they use the train journey as a metaphor for life.  

Our last song of the day took me back to my back-packing days: Crosby Stills & Nash with MARRAKESH EXPRESS. Here’s a BBC clip of Graham Nash and David Crosby (not sure why Stills wasn’t there). Sweet stuff.
