WHILE Aussie Jessica Watson is already sailing, New Zealand-born teenager Laura Dekker is still not allowed to set sail and attempt the world record as youngest solo sailor around the world ever.

SPIEGEL: A court in Utrecht, Netherlands, has ruled that the 14-year old teenager keeps being blocked from setting sail until 1 July 2010, when a new decision will be made.

Dekker announced earlier this week that she wanted to finish the current school year before starting her trip.

However, the Family Court in Utrecht said it needed proof that the sailing trip did not endanger the child’s health or mental development.

It is not decided whether Dekker can set sail after 1 July 2010.

Her parents’ rights concerning her upbringing and education keep restricted by the court.

Dekker is going to stay with her father Dick Dekker, who supports her plans, on his boat in Wijk bij Duurstede near Utrecht.

Her German mother, Babs Müller, told media in September  that she’d rather have a daughter that is alive but will never talk to her again, than a dead daughter.

Dekker’s parents live seperated since their divorce in 2002.

Several sponsors have already put their names forward and offered to support Laura Dekker’s trip once she is able to sail around the world and even plans for Reality TV-shows are being made.

Jetzt begann die Familiendiskussion, welche Fische es denn sein sollten. Zunächst sollten wir eine Spezies einsetzen, später andere. Wir entschieden uns für vier Guppys, drei Weibchen und ein Männchen. Die Kinder tauften sie auch gleich Ricky, Charly, Morina, Kicky. Gibt man eigentlich Fischen einen Namen? Zur Unterscheidung haben sie eine unterschiedliche Färbung.

In den Thermo-Vakuumbeutel ging es nach Hause. Die Tiere wurden erst mal samt Tüte ins Wasser gelassen, damit sich das Tütenwasser an die Temperatur des neuen Zuhauses angleicht. Zudem wurde ein wenig Wasser des Aquariums in den Transportbeutel getan, um die Fische an den neune Geschmack zu gewöhnen. Nach 20 Minuten kam dann der Komplettumzug. Altes Wasser und Fische per Käscher ins neue Heim. Und da sind sie, lernen ihre neue Umgebung kennen. Die Fische sollten nur einmal am Tag, etwa zur gleichen Zeit gefüttert werden. Aber nicht überfüttern. Nach zwei Wochen stellte sich heraus, dass Kicky schwanger war und vier Jungfische das Leben schenkte. Die kleinen Babys sind voll aktiv und ich hoffe, dass sie es überleben. Guppys sind dafür bekannt, den Nachwuchs einfach aufzufressen. Guten Appetit.

The degree of difficulty of livestock is directly proportional to the needs of each species. If a Guppy can breed in almost all conditions, provided they put in the presence of a male and a female live Characidae some need very soft water and acid, and their eggs deteriorate on contact with light . The size of fry at birth is also a determining factor because it is easier to feed fry over a cm as a guppy a larva Characidae 2 mm. A novice will have any benefit to begin testing its breeding with species called “easy”.

Providing the means of its ambitions

It is difficult to successfully raise fish in an aquarium community. It is preferable either to separate the parents in a tank providing ideal conditions for spawning, or levy spawning or fry in community tank to raise them separately. The purchase or construction of an aquarium is needed for those who want to raise fish. The ferry did not have to be big, not aesthetic, it must simply be provided with a filtration system, the best being a small filter exhauster connected to an air pump, because the fry are not likely to be suck it.

It is impossible to detail all methods of reproduction of tropical fish, as they are varied. To give you an idea, some stick their eggs in cavities or shells, others let go in a cluster of plants, others lay directly fry instead of eggs and there is even one case that sticks its eggs under a leaf out of the water and watered until they hatch. It is therefore important to document thoroughly on a case before trying to raise.

A food to the extent of the mouth

For all species, the fry grow equivalent to giving them food adapted to the size of their mouths and preferably alive, so it interests them. The powders and liquids can help trade and troubleshoot but they must be supplemented with live prey if we want to raise healthy fish. If a Guppy Platy or at birth can swallow a brine shrimp (shrimp larvae of a mm long, easy to give birth at home with minimal equipment), many other species need a food smaller. We descend to the same size as the single-celled animal paramecium. This page will give you more information on live foods for fry.

“Die farbverstärkende Wirkung ist schon nach zwei Wochen alleiniger Fütterung erkennbar” dies schreibt der Hersteller Tetra.
Was ist da wohl dran?

Glaubt man Kundenmeinungen, sieht das ganze so aus:
- “Die Farben der Fische sind am leuchten… und was noch besser ist, sie essen es wirklich gerne. Es ist das Lieblingsfutter meiner Guppys, Platys und Rotkopfsalmlern!”

- “!!! Achtung !!! Macht Yellows zu Kampffischen, so gut scheint das Zeug zu schmecken. Das meine lieben davon schöner werden scheint ihnen bei den Fressorgien nicht das Wichtigste zu sein. Hauptache sie haben es in 30 Sekunden verputz. (Aquariumdeckel schnell schließen, es geht heiß her.)”

- “Super Futter. Das wollen Sie am liebsten. Bleibt nichts über, sogar die leckrigen Neons mögen das. Andere Futtersorten werden kaum beachtet.”

Grundsätzlich kann man, wenn man den Bewertungen in einschlägigen Online-Shops glauben schenken mag, sagen, dass das Futter gut angenommen wird.

Das Thema mit den leuchtenden Farben wage Ich nun nicht zu bestätigen. Dies hat auch einen einfachen Grund: Um “leuchtende Farben” zu bekommen, bedarf es weit mehr als nur gutes Futter. Denn auch spielen Lichteinfall, Beleuchtung und auch Wasserwerte eine große Rolle.

Denn nur ein glücklicher Fisch ist ein schöner Fisch!

Einen kleinen Satz möchte ich noch über den Vitamingehalt in dem Produkt verlieren:
Dieser ist gegenüber anderen Fischfuttern schon relativ hoch. So ist zumindest mein persönliches empfinden. Vor allem Vitamin A, so fällt mir auf, ist kaum irgendwo anders so viel drin.  Aber auch Vitamin C ist ordentlich vorhanden!

Preislich ist das Produkt wie alle Tetra-Produkte nicht unbedingt “billig”. Aber das muss es auch nicht, denn es muss vor allem eins sein: Qualitativ gut.

Sword-tailed Fish

We put students back into action for the 8th laboratory demonstration at Salaya, Mahidol University. In this week practical, students need to study behaviour of three animal species.

Starting from Artemia, an arthropods, that would response to the direction of light by its ventral light reaction. A small torch and black-papered shield were provided to control the directions of light. Some students took their experiment to the darkness beneath the table, in order to clearly see the result.

Depending on their seat in the laboratory, they would have to begin their studies using one of the two fishes available, including guppy and sword-tailed fish. Ethogram will be made from preliminary observation of the fish. Next, some good eyes and hand are required. Those that were good with texting or SMS were found their skill useful in this laboratory. I’ve found some students punch in sequence of action patterns of their fish using a mobile phone, before recording the result on paper.

A lot of people think RAD RAZ is a fish. He’s not – he’s RAZ. However, this character here is, in fact, a fish. How do you like that?

Guppies are quite possibly the easiest fish to breed. Male guppies are one of the most ’sexually charged’ fish around. If you have a tank with female and male guppies, chances are they’re pregant or ‘gravid’ (the medical term for pregnant). The male guppy has a Gonopodium – a modified anal fin used to introduce sperm to the female.

Guppy Courtship

A male guppy will hover in front of his potential mate and shimmer his fin, fluttering it repeatedly. The male guppy will then approach the female and attempt to rub his anal fin on the under belly of the female guppy, if he is successful you can expect fry in around a month .

Male guppies have an insatiable appetite, it therefore recommended that the ratio be 1:3 – for each male guppy there should two or three females.

Signs of a pregnant guppy

A pregnant guppy’s stomach will be swollen and bulge, their gravid spot (black spot near their anal fin) will darken. This is the guppies eggs, the darker it gets the closer to birth she is. The little black balls inside the gravid spot is actually the young fry’s eyes. Female guppies will deliver fry about every 28 days, but it can range from 21 to roughly 40 days. It also depends upon temperature and genetics.

There is a great forum that shows you the different stages of a guppies pregnancy in more detail. A guppy can produce anywhere between 1 – and 100 fry, typically around 20-30.

When to move a pregnant female

Knowing when to move pregnant guppies is tricky, you’ll have to watch your individual fish and note her behavior changes just before she drops fry, usually she will hang back from the other fish and may stay in a corner and her belly will be almost squared out. It would be good to move her as soon as you notice this behavior. A good general guideline would be to move the females into a special fry tank after being with male guppies after 20 days or so.

What to do in the mean time

It is highly recommended that you set up a birthing or a breeding tank, if you want your fry to survive – there are breeding traps that float or attach to the top of a main tank, however these can stress the mother and cause her to abort the pregnancy (the eggs and fry are reabsorbed in the mother’s womb). Once your tank is set up (see this post on tips for this) you can start to make fry food You can purchase bespoke fry food such as JBL Novo Baby – a cheeper option is to use normal flakes that you use for your main tank, take a large pinch in put into a plastic bag, then rubbing it between your fingers until it makes a fine dust.
