La espectacular serie (de sonido y también de interpretación) que el sello Signum está editando con conciertos grabados en directo de la Philharmonia Orchestra de Londres, nos propone esta vez un doble CD con los monumentales “Gurrelieder” de Arnold Schoenberg, en la versión que el finlandés Esa-Pekka Salonen dirigió en el Royal Festival Hall, en febrero de este mismo año.

Entre los solistas destacan los nombres de Stig Andersen, Soile Isokoski, Monica Groop o Ralf Lukas, entre otros. Los coros fueron las Philharmonia Voices y el City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus.

So great is the size of orchestra and choir required to do justice to Schoenberg’s late Romantic epic that it is performed very rarely in its entirety. My school took a small party of students to see the Gurrelieder. This was a huge privilege: perhaps the only time in my life I will see this oratorio, I was also lucky to see Salonen conduct. Like the wood-dove herself, Salonen almost seemed to take off as he led the music. Was he lifting the orchestra or was the orchestra lifting him? Birdlike, always, at the close of the piece he held up his left hand as though cupping the essence of the Gurrelieder in his palm. Thanks to him, the great wave of songs rose and fell exactly as they should: extravagant, lush, precise and clear. A phalanx of musicians left the ground with him and landed again flawlessly. He, the orchestra, the choir, and the soloists had ballon; musicians, they were dancers too. Below is a short account of the work they performed.

Waldemar, Schoenberg’s lover-king protagonist in the Gurrelieder, opens the piece with an image of stillness:

‘Now dusk mutes every sound / on land and sea.’ Schoenberg’s oceanic final voyage into Romanticism, with its titanic orchestration,  unfolds from the day’s end, from silence. From nothing and from shadows this oratorio takes us on a journey to a castle (Gurre), where Waldemar visits his lover Tove. After the pair are reunited, the songs take us to darker places:  Tove dies at the hands of Waldemar’s vengeful wife, and, from there, Waldemar  journeys through the afterlife, rising from the dead with his vassals to go in search of his murdered lover.  No fulfillment, no happiness returns us to the peace we experience in those opening lines. Schoenberg’s theme  is longing or saudade, as the Portuguese would have it, and it is this saudade that gives the Gurrelieder its explosive drive. We glimpse rest and peace in the incipit, and every note that follows pulses with a desire for the peace of  ’Nun dämpft die Dämm’rung jeden Ton.’ What doesn’t move creates movement.

From stillness, two choirs, two timpanists, a celeste, vast woodwind and string sections, four concert harps–even two piccolos–produce such a ‘call-note’ of longing that audience members feel obliterated by it. Hearing it, we are dislodged beautifully but violently from ourselves. ‘Holla’ sing the male voice choir in unison in part three as they hunt through the forest. The chase is on through the darkness to first light. Evening and morning, the last day.

Des de les terres del nord intento planejar bé aquestes dues properes setmanes, en què estaré a Bilbao, Donosti, Gijón, Saragossa i Barcelona en tan poquet temps :-S Segur que alguna cosa m’he deixat i me l’hauré de fer enviar…

A Bilbao a descansar, i a Donosti al casament de l’Aitziber i espero que a retrobar molta gent que m’agradaria tornar a veure.

A Gijón amb Canto Coronato, fem un concert centrat en la Barcelona gòtica el dilluns 21, a la Iglesia de Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura.

A Saragossa amb els Gurrelieder el divendres 25, amb tota la troupe de cors més la JONC i la JONDE: no vull pensar la quantitat d’autobusos que hauran de posar… És probable que siguem en total 500 persones! I a Barcelona, repetirem el concert el diumenge 27, i ja està, ja m’hi quedo… fins les vacances de l’agost…

I no és per res però jo diria que és la vegada que menys m’ha pesat la maleta… Aquí hi ha algo que no quadra… Ja m’ho trobaré :-S

Ahir, data intempestiva com poques, es va celebrar el primer assaig que reunia els quatre cors mixtes que participaran en els Gurrelieder amb l’OBC la setmana que ve. La sala Oriol Martorell de L’Auditori plena de gent que cantava: l’Orfeó, la Polofònica de Puigreig, Lieder Camera i Madrigal, ocupant tota la platea i els laterals d’escena… Bastant impactant, la veritat! Jo encara no em faig a la idea de com ens col·locarem tots a l’escenari, que pel que es veu l’orquesta també està ampliada… A veure dilluns en el primer assaig amb Eiji Oue, que ja tinc ganes de treballar amb ell.

La orquestració ja és la que és:

Narrador, soprano, mezzo-soprano, 2 tenors, baix-baríton
3 cors d’homes a 4 veus
cor mixte a 8 veus
4 piccolos, 4 flautes, 3 oboès, 3 corns anglesos, 3 clarinets, 2 requintos, 2 clarinets baixos, 3 fagots, 2 contrafagots, 10 trompes, 7 trompetes, 7 trombons, tuba, 4 arpes, celesta, percussió extensa (6 timpani, per exemple) i cordes.

La història fa una mica de por, un rei que reuneix cavallers i soldats morts per trobar la seva amant, assassinada per ordre de la reina. Aquests cavallers zombies són un triple cor d’homes, amb un paper molt dur vocalment que esperem que sobrevisqui a la combinació amb l’orquestra, que només els faltaria als pobres que tant s’esforcen que a sobre no se sentís bé.La intervenció del cor mixte es redueix a uns 5 minuts al final de l’obra, també bastant durillo, notes tingudes gairebé al límit de la tessitura per aconseguir l’efecte apoteòsic i mig mahlerià.

Ara, si aquesta obra no acaba amb les nostres cordes vocals, promet ser tot un espectacle: ens hi veiem!
