Big shout out and welcome to new subscribers from my ZirZamin show in New York with Jess McAvoy. What a treat it was for us to perform for you all. I was thrilled that so many of you turned up, filling our performance space like beans in a tasty taco. I just prayed for there not to be a fire.

So much has happened since we last spoke. Fronz Arp and I have been hitting the open mic scene and have made some great new friends, including a performer called “Sticker Dude” who hands out notepads and stickers after he plays. Last week he gave me a sticker which I posted on the back of my phone case that read:

“We shall not allow the fear of going mad make us keep the banner of imagination at half mast.”

- Andre Breton.

Last night I got free tickets to see Leonard Cohen with my new friend Baby Sol (UK based singer-songwriter extraordinaire and backing vocalist for Paloma Faith). I fell a little bit in love with lil’ Leonard, as I now call him, not just because he skips off stage (literally…he skips…like gangnam style) but because I felt like he was singing to me. I felt like I’d known him forever; like we were old friends and lovers. I realise this is weird to say about someone who is more than twice my age (or is it?), but he had that effect. Although the style of his songwriting is not usually my cup of tea, it was his poetry and stage craft that had me wrapped up gently in the palm of his hand for most of the concert. I feel so lucky to have witnessed this.

By the time S3 had started we’d seen the ups and downs of the Walter-Jessie relationship several times, this season was – for me – the first time that another relationship became more interesting; Walter and Gus – which ranges from courteous & professional to explosively volatile – you also get the feeling that Walt has finally met his match, as Gus puts the squeeze on him, and the people he cares about. It’s definitely the best source of drama in this season. After Walt comes clean with Skyler their relationship also changes significantly, yet, not exactly in the direction you’d expect. Because so much emphasis is put on characters, family and relationships it takes over four episodes (of only thirteen) for any real plot to happen, and the only tension comes from the two silent cousin gang bangers. I find it fascinating in America that Breaking Bad depicts in-depth drug making techniques, drug use + abuse, violence, a man’s head being crushed by an ATM machine… but the word ‘fuck’ is bleeped out. Season three has some of the best moments (Car Park, Ladder confession, finale) in the series so far… yet it’s also got some of the slowest, most plodding and outright bizarre episodes (‘Fly’ episode feels out-of-place, and Walter – for the first time – appears ridiculously simple). The most defining feature of Breaking Bad is that it all still feels relatively normal and realistic – you believe in the characters, their families, their lives, their roles. You know people like these. That’s still the show’s strongest suit, but after 3 seasons it’s hard to see how much longer it can rely on character development over drama.

Score: 7/10

THE IN-BETWEEN
The In-Between does not undermine a deeper understanding of what a gesture adds. A life of its own that goes on beneath the image. Actions tied together with life experience, logic of space, a great idea, a personality, a motion, a location. We may quickly take action, touching-base, while remaining on the move. In general, we suggest fluency and ease in the city, beyond state of mind. Construction of surroundings, all its elements intimately packed into a frame – the crossing cars, the comings and goings of people – oblivious busyness. Yet, the meticulousness of action, partly because responsive individuals inhabit the world built for them. Gestures give us logic of space, a great idea of personality – an environment for all that ‘meaningless business’.

GUS EAGLETON
Gus Eagleton’s art has explored figurative painting on canvas and in urban street art, where he’s used aerosol paint and oils together in small compositions and across massive murals. Central to his latest body of work is an interest in the dichotomies, and the tension between these poles that manifest in the urban landscape. He explains:
As economic growth fluxuates, so to does infrastructure, this correlation has a direct association to a living organism both expanding and deteriorating. Sky risers ascend and the long forgotten remanets of the old world slowly deteriorate. This notion of a living moving infrastructure is a direct link to people, a structural doppelganger, shadowing cultural traits and trends. The theory of Apollonian and Dionysian is just one of many dichotomies with a relation to two complete opposites in simultaneous harmony. Apollonian being ordered and imperialistic, while Dionysian is free and rebellious. This series of paintings looks for aesthetic beauty within infrastructure by looking at categorical but harmonious opposites and relating them to economic expansion and deterioration, enabling the viewer to delve into the human condition.1
Gus Eagleton undertook a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, between 2011-12. He has exhibited in artist-run and independent spaces around Australia and London. Eagleton has been the recipient of several awards including: Lilli Pilli Youth Award NSW (2008); Green Dragon Highly commended Award, Brisbane (2009); Under-Grade Painting Award Queensland Collage of Art Brisbane (2012) and finalist in the GAS award (graduate exhibition and espresso garage award) (2012). He was recently featured in Australian Art Collector magazine, Issue 62, 2012. Eagleton does commission work, including mural work and has pieces in private collections all around Australia.

Lars Lindstrom (Ryan Gosling) has a problem, and nobody knows what it is. He’s painfully shy, full of anxiety, is super-awkward and can’t even have dinner with his family, let alone have a normal conversation with a girl. When he tells his brother Gus (Paul Schneider) and Gus’ wife Karin (Emily Mortimer) that he has met someone over the internet, they are ecstatic for him. However, Bianca is not what they expected. She is a sex doll that Lars ordered online. Lars’ family, friends and the town must now find a way to deal with Lars’ delusional beliefs that Bianca is a real girl who not only talks to him, but loves him back.

I remember hearing about this film a while ago, and since it had Ryan Gosling in it, I sort of shied away from it because he tends to be in a lot of movies I don’t particularly have much desire to watch. However, this film seemed to have such a quirky idea and personality that I figured I’d give it a shot.

First off, I think the premise was the best part about this film. A town set “somewhere” up north, which is somewhat reserved and apparently full of churchgoing people, having to deal with an otherwise healthy and kind individual who is in love with a sex doll….that’s great stuff. What it lacked was the proper focus and execution.

The movie felt like it dragged on forever. I understood what the film was trying to do fairly early on, so to have to watch it all unfold at a snail’s pace somewhat lessened the impact of the film’s idea. Also, they sort of moved “six weeks later” from the point Lars first hears about the doll until he had ordered it, and you don’t really see anything in between. It was the only jarring part of the movie, to me.

Gosling’s acting was great, honestly. The whole cast was acting up a storm, so no complaints on that front.

There had to be a little suspension of disbelief because of certain things, like an ambulance that is willing to pick up a sex doll and waste money/time and potentially interrupt someone’s REAL emergency…all because he is Lars? When he doesn’t even seem to be that well-liked at the start of the film? So, there are things like that in the movie that are somewhat hard to swallow.

It makes for a great date movie, I’m sure…or if you really like Ryan Gosling in sweaters.

JOE Rating: ★★★

Last year I was appointed as a suppliant member of the board (styrelse) of the GUS (Göteborgs universitetets studentkårer) that in fact united together efforts of four student unions in the University (Göta, Konstkår, Handelshögskolans i Göteborg Studentkår and Sahlgrenska Akademins Studentkår). Being on a suppliant position means participation at the board meetings when regular members cannot come. So, last week vice-chair of Göta contacted me on the question if I can come as one of the regular members cannot make it. I agreed, and after a brief glance at the meeting’s agenda I was highly motivated to participate. Among issues to be discussed were the GUS åsiktsdokument (the document with main statements of the organization that members should follow) and a discussion on the focus for the organization for the next year. Being a keen activist for rights of international students in Sweden I see student organizations as an important platform for positive change. After a several hours of interesting discussions we came to consensus about the whole document. I was happy that there was a very good focus on internationalizing of the education and foreign students as well as on quality of education, course evaluations and equality.

It is really interesting and fascinating that after one year of intensive involvement of student union’s work I feel quite comfortable with specific terminology in Swedish and procedures of official meetings. Back in Russia two years from 2006 till 2008 I was working as a vice-chair of the Youth Government of Saratov region, but there it was more interaction with municipal authorities. That’s why it is so interesting for me to have that kind of experience here in Sweden, and I’m sure it will be a life-long memories.

After a long day of meetings and discussions I went to Studenternas Huset, where every first Thursday of the month is a karaoke party. It was a lot of people from my program who came as well – it was great fun. Especially, our dancing and singing performance of Loreen’s Euphoria was terrific!

Friday evening I spend with my choir friends at the concert of the most famous Swedish male choir from Uppsala – Orphei Drängar. Konsetrhuset was full. There were people of all ages and social classes, and it is always fascinating to see that music has no limits. Choir was singing very good and special quest jazz-musician Magnus Lindgren made it memorable.

The king will scratch on my legs and whine until I get up from the couch to grab him a cookie.
Today I had a smart idea to take him on a ride, and bought him a junior roast beef from Arby’s. (short employments from the time of May 2012 to July 2012)
That made Gus’s day…but he was still hungry for more when I bought home boneless wings from work tonight. What a spoiled dog!!

Let’s give a nice big shoutout to Mother Nature this past weekend because as predicated, she was magnificent. Mid-70′s, sunny, perfection. All.weekend.long.

There was a trip to the largest dog park in the universe where we spent almost 3 HOURS on Saturday morning. The seasoned enthusiasts call it “Disneyland for Dogs” and I can see why… Gus friggin’ loved it. And it’s so big that we barely saw anyone while we were hiking around even though there were probably hundreds of people/pups there. Thankfully, no one but us saw when Gus decided to rub his entire body all over a dead skunk. I’m not kidding. He also ate a chunk of horse poo. ……….. That’s all I have to say about that.

Among many other more respectable activities, we were also invited to a friends’ parents house for Easter brunch. I hadn’t given much thought to Easter this year, probably because it’s generally a family holiday and we have no family out here. But it was a nice surprise to be invited to the burbs by our friends – especially since what we thought would be a maybe-awkward, mostly-family gathering was actually a mix of their closest pals and neighbors. It turns out that this group of people, who have all lived in that neighborhood at one time or another, have been getting together for holidays for years. I’m talking 25+ years. Most of them are Oregon-transplants who don’t have much family in the area so they’ve all basically adopted each other and each others’ children as their family. It was so sweet to hear their stories and see photos of the same group of people from Easter, 20 years ago. It definitely gave us hope for our future in Portland. Because it can be so hard to be away from our families. Especially knowing that we’re missing out on holidays and memories. (do you hear tiny violins playing yet because I sure do.) Seriously though, the “family” that we met on Sunday made me excited to continue making friends so great that even if were aren’t able to be in MN for a holiday, we’ll still have our own Portland family to celebrate with.

So, all that being said, who wants to hang out with me for Memorial Day? No pressure.

The idea of a book about children with cancer sounds horrible: so easy to slip into stereotypical and boring cliches, to be overly sentimental and maudlin. But John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is nothing less than extraordinary for its utter avoidance of these tropes.

Stars is the story of one Hazel Grace Lancaster, a teenage girl who has cancer. She begins the book by telling us that her mother thinks she is depressed; Hazel says that in everything she has read about cancer, depression is listed as a side effect of the disease. But Hazel, in the first of many themes, disagrees. “Depression,” she says, “is a side effect of dying” (Green, 2012 p. 3).

Hazel attends a Kids with Cancer Support Group in a church, where, she says everybody wants “to beat not only cancer itself, but the other people in the room” (Green, 2012 p. 5). It’s here that she first meets Augustus Waters, there are the invitation of a boy named Isaac. Augustus catches her eye and then becomes more attractive when he starts making puns about Isaac, who is about to have surgery that will leave him blind. This sense of humor—dark and tremendously witty—is part of the heart of this book.

Augustus had “a touch of osteosarcoma” and lost a leg, but as the book starts he is in remission (Green 2012 p11). After he notes in that first group that he worries about oblivion, Hazel tells him that nothing will survive, that everything that humans do will vanish and no one will remember any of it, and if it worries him, she says, she suggests he ignore it. This pulls Augustus up short, and after that he and Hazel become friends.

According to Hazel, Cancer Kids—as she calls them—have a shorthand. What’s your story, they ask each other, and then they tell one another their diagnoses, their history with the disease. In Hazel’s case, she explains, she had a near lethal bout with thyroid cancer. In the first of many (many, many) heartbreaking passages she describes her mother asking if she was ready, and then thinking she was about to die; but then they managed to clear some fluid from her lungs and gave her an experimental drug that worked. Hazel is clear that it is not a cure; she is still terminal. But she is also in the strange netherworld of knowing she will die way too early and not knowing when that will be.

Into this netherworld walks Augustus Waters. The two become closer and closer, bonding over bad jokes and deep talks. Hazel introduces Augustus to her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction, which—appropriately enough—is about a girl dying of cancer. The book ends in the middle of a sentence, to replicate death, since life ends that way too: in the middle of a sentence. Hazel wants to know what happens, of course, and Augustus uses his Wish (as in the Make A Wish foundation) to take her to Holland to meet the author.

The author ends up being a complete jerk. Although Hazel and Augustus enjoy parts of their trip anyway—having sex for the first time, visiting a very fancy restaurant with delicious champagne—they are both surprised and disturbed by the author’s refusal to tell them anything about the book and to treat them civilly.

After a visit to the Anne Frank museum, the two return to the hotel, where Green throws a giant curveball. Augustus—who has what is usually a fairly curable kind of cancer—is dying.

After he tells Hazel, he grimaces, and she asks him if it hurts. No, he says, but “I like this world. I like drinking champagne. I like not smoking…and now I don’t even get a battle. I don’t get a fight.” When Hazel tries to reassure him that he can battle his cancer, he is dismissive: “What am I doing battle with? My cancer. And what is my cancer? My cancer is me. The tumors are made of me. They’re made of me as surely as my brain and my heart are made of me. It’s a civil war, Hazel Grace, with a predetermined winner” (Green, 2012 p. 216).

The two return to the US. Augustus gets sicker and sicker, and at some point he summons Hazel and their friends Isaac to the church so that they can eulogize him while he is still there to see it. Both deliver eulogies that will crack your heart wide open.

Hazel thinks it is unbearable, to have her best friend and her first love die, and she gives a tremendously eloquent description of pure, unadulterated grief:

“When you go into the ER, one of the first things they ask you to do is to rate your pain on a scale of one to ten….once…it felt like my chest was on fire, flames licking the insides of my ribs fighting for a way to burn out of my body…the nurse asked about the pain…and I held up nine fingers….Later, the nurse…said ‘you know how I know you’re a fighter? You called a ten a nine.’ But that wasn’t quite right. I called it a nine because I was saving my ten. And here it was, the great and terrible ten, slamming me again and again as I lay still and alone in my bed staring at the ceiling, the waves tossing me against the rocks then pulling me back out to sea so they could launch me again into the jagged face of the cliff, leaving me floating faceup on the water, undrowned (Green, 2012 p. 263)”.

Green’s novel doesn’t have a happy ending, particularly. How could it? Augustus is dead and Hazel is dying. In the end, she finds a letter Augustus wrote to Afflictions’ author, which closes with “You don’t get to choose if you get hurt in this world, old man, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like my choices. I hope she does too” (Green, 2012 p. 313).

And Hazel does.

There are some recurring themes in Stars. One is side effects of dying; Hazel informs us that most things are. Nostalgia, among them. Another is the idea that kids with cancer are grenades: Hazel is constantly worried that she will destroy her parents, and the people that she loves. She worries about letting Augustus love her—as much as she can control that anyway—because then when she dies he will be gutted. She is terrified for her parents, the loss they will feel when she dies. Another oft-repeated theme in the novel: “pain demands to be felt.” It does no good to bottle it up. The title comes from Shakespeare, when Cassius says “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars/but in ourselves”—but, as the novel notes, “there is no shortage of fault to be found amid our stars” (Green, 2012 p. 112). There is, indeed, a whole lot of fault in Hazel’s stars, and in Augustus’.

Stars is unique in how utterly matter-of-fact it is. I chose novels about death that were not, on the whole, terribly maudlin; but Green least of all. His characters scorn the idea of battling cancer. Instead, they are refreshingly pragmatic about the disease. Cancer, after all, is only trying to survive: they are merely victims of mutating cells.

Green captures the gallows humor, the exhilaration of first love, the ways in which teenagers might take on different affects to see what fits, perfectly. He is not concerned with playing to the reader’s emotions. He is concerned with giving us a glimpse into what it is like to be a teenager, in love for the first time, and to have to balance that with the horrible knowledge that you are going to die—and then to find that it was your love that was the grenade, all along.

- At school’s spring church service, my schoolmates and I sang “Jesus Loves Me”, “I’ve got the Joy” and “He’s got the Whole World”. From the crowds response, we did an excellent job.

- Finally, I do #2 on the potty! All on my own – without coaxing, encouragement or bribes.

- I had an amazing lunch/afternoon play date at my friend Layla’s. We made pizzas for lunch, ate fun snacks, and her silly Daddy, Monte, kept us busy all afternoon.

- For Read Across America, I attended Uncle John’s Puppet show at my school. Uncle John kept my attention with magic tricks and his funny puppets.

- I attended my classmate Thalia’s birthday party at The Little Gym. It was so much fun to climb and run the afternoon away with my friends.

- To celebrate St. Patrick’s day, we feasted on Irish food all weekend – homemade corned beef with potatoes, cabbage and Irish soda bread one day, and Guinness Lamb stew the next. We also dressed in green all weekend long.

- I had a play date at my classmate Luke’s house. Seeing school friends outside of school is fun – and so is playing with someone else’s toys.

- I also have frequent play dates with my friend, Brendan, and his sister, Natalie. Brendan’s in Ms. Autumn’s class, so I don’t see him at school anymore, but I really enjoy the times we do get together.

- Gunnar & Kaj came to my house for a dinner play date! I love to see these two guys! We played splendidly together, and let the grownups have some time talk among themselves.

- One cool, sunny Saturday I participated in the Jaycee’s (a community men’s group) annual Easter egg hunt. It was like hunting through a mob of people, but I managed to collect 11 eggs, and was delighted to find candy, small toys, stickers and tattoos inside. The following day I dined at the Jaycee’s annual pancake breakfast. Yum!

- I recently received two Geronimo Stilton chapter books. I enjoyed having these longer books read to me, and although I was mostly patient through the text only pages, I really enjoyed the pages with accompanying illustrations.

- I like to build “snares” with ropes and love trying to catch people in them.

- The weather is finally getting nice enough to venture to the playgrounds again.

- To end off the month, Layla joined me for a half-birthday morning/lunch play date, complete with cake!

-I play this “game” (for lack of a better word), which drives Mom & Dad crazy. It’s kind of like dragging M&D through a very long brainstorming session. For example, a cover of a book has two boys being chased by an alligator – so I’ll ask Mom and/or Dad, what they think is going on in the picture. They give an answer, to which I always say, “I don’t think that’s it. You say another word.” And I continue to ask this until they’ve exhausted all possible and impossible explanations.

Quotes of the Month:

- to Mom… “We kiss and then I give you a ring.”

- “The squirrel did not lose his nut because he is not a loser.”

- “Mom, if you are good, after heaven, you’ll come back as a boy.”

- “When I was growing up, I had a crocodile and kept him in the back yard until he died and went to haven.”

The Leeds managers job has been hot topic amongst fans recently with many call for Neil Warnock to leave now and allow someone new to get the current squad playing to their style and get their ideas across to the players. With Nigel Adkins now the manager at Reading here is my opinion on some of the leading candidates that the fans are calling for and who I would like to see take charge.

Paolo Di Canio – The Italian is a fiery character who would appeal to many Leeds fans due to his passion for the game however his lack of experience may be a problem for a few who would like to see people. But he does have a promotion under his belt with Swindon and will have a whole host of contacts within football and they could prove vital and bring in some good players.

Gus Poyet – Once assistant at Elland Road Gus knows all about the club, the fans and the history and would be an extremely popular choice with fans. However having recently turned down Reading and his current side Brighton chasing promotion it is highly doubtful he would come but in the past he has said he would relish the chance to manage Leeds as he has unfinished business here.

Karl Robinson – Someone I would like to see get the job is current MK Dons manager Karl Robinson. He is the second youngest manager in the football league and has a lot of suitors in higher leagues. He likes his team to get the ball down and play short short passes and play with pace.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – An outsider for the job ex United striker Hasselbaink has completed his coaching badges and had a brief spell at Nottingham Forest earlier in the season. Whether or not fans would take to him is a different matter as some still hold a grudge over the way he departed Elland Road. This would be his first managerial role so it would be a big ask for him to take the job.

Lucas Radebe – The Chief would be an instant him as he is a legend at the club however should he fail to bring success would the fans turn on him like they have others in the past? He has said that he would only ever manage Leeds or the South African national team. For me I wouldn’t want him to be our manager as I would rather remember him as a great player than failed manager.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all be lazy like cats. This is my sister’s cat Gus….and this is HIS chair. If you are sitting in his chair he will make sure to lay in front of your face so you can’t see anything….give you a massage which involves him scratching you every time he does it. If you get up for just a second he will make a bee line for his chair and claim it as his own…just like this picture; i wasn’t even gone for a second and he took my spot!!! Got to love him!!!

Since our son arrived one week ago, our world has more or less been flipped upside down. All schedu

Since our son arrived one week ago, our world has more or less been flipped upside down. All schedules have been trampled upon, and all expectations have been suspended. Soon we will resume everyday life, but for now, this is all we need. We do all we can to take care of each other, and we wait for a new routine to evolve. We are re-learning how to manage a family, this time with as many children as each of us has hands. Balance will come, and it will be beautiful. But for now, our world is this simple life inside of our apartment, taking everything moment by moment, one day at a time. I know that a time this simple will not come again. Soon [daughter] will have her own world of friends and school, and [son] will begin his great journey of lifelong discovery. But now- now all they need is their Mama and Papa, and each other, and this big world of family and food and rest and play inside of our little home. [Husband] and I lay side by side in the darkness, ever so grateful to have one another in these amazingly beautiful and trying times. Soon our whispered conversation evolves into sleep-deprived delirious laughter. We laugh and laugh. These are the days, we say. This is family. This is love.
