Each student learned how to draw a face so that it looks realistic and three-dimensional. The rest of the work needed to look flat and full of decorative patterns.

What better way to please your loved one this xmas than with a beautiful Klimt print? We include all the very best in this post, and each is available at very competitive prices from market leader, Art.com, who we have personally used ourselves in the past, and so feel comfortable in recommending.

I have used them for Klimt and Picasso prints in the past, some unframed and others with a variety of standard frames. I always consider the home of the friend that i am buying it for when choosing a frame. There are plenty of good options available. Merry Xmas!!

Christmas is coming up soon, and why not celebrate with a beautiful print of Gustav Klimt’s The Kiss painting which is currently on offer at Art.com. It would make a great present for any art lover out there, or why not just add it to your own wall?

I have purchased several art products recently and find that The Kiss has proven popular with most people whilst some other choices have not always worked! Artists like Picasso or Van Gogh are similarly brilliant, but this work really does satisfy most, which is crucial when picking a present for a loved one.

I recommend Art.com because of the quality of their products, my success with each item that i have purchased from them (mainly prints, plus two posters this year) and the fact that they reguarly offer great deals across their site. Only last week there was 30% Off everything on their site! And that is on top of their already really competitive prices.

The range of service is also good, with many framed prints available too. Lots of people prefer these and so the wide range on offer could be of interest to you. Shipping is also pretty reasonable too, and that is a common concern of mine when buying anything bulky online.

If you purchase something from Art.com please leave your comments here and i shall add any videos too that you use to discuss what you have received. I am entirely separate from them, so both good comments and bad comments alike will be included – no censoring!! This way, greater trust and honesty should lead to more confidence in buying from them. They are the market leader in art prints, for all the very reasons that i have included.

So, if you’re short for xmas ideas just click the link below to take a look at all the different prints that Art.com have to offer, normally at great prices and low shipping!!

Merry Xmas.

Date of Birth:
Klimt was born on July 14th, 1862 as the second oldest son in a family of seven.

Inspiration:
Klimt was inspired by a painter named Hans Makart, who painted mostly hyper-realistic and academic things.

Education:
His family resided in Austria, very close to Vienna, and was plagued with poverty. Klimt always showed signs of being artistic, even from an early age. His oldest and youngest brothers, Ernst and Georg, were also artistically inclined. Family members and friends pushed Gustav to apply for the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, and at the age of 14, he was accepted on a scholarship. His brother, Ernst, also attended this school with him.1

Klimt spent 7 years at the school, working with his brother and another student named Franz Matsch. Towards the end of his schooling, Klimt, his brother and Matsch began getting commissions as a team, under the name “Company of Artists”. They were even able to work with their professor on a mural for the Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Works of Note:

Illustrator Miscellany:
For the past few centuries there have been many talented and noteworthy artists and illustrators around the world. Many of these illustrators go under the radar of the non-artistic world, but there are a few who stand out from the rest and are recognized even today by artists and non-artists alike. Gustav Klimt is one of these. He’s an exceptionally talented artist and illustrator, and although he died nearly a century ago, his illustrations still go on to awe and inspire people today.

In 1888, Klimt was awarded the Golden order of Merit from Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria for his mural work. Up until this time, he has been working alongside his brother in creating his artwork. In 1892, his father and brother both died unexpectedly, which may have been a factor in Klimt’s change of style in the next few years.2 In 1899, Nikolaus Dumba commissioned Klimt, Makart and Matsch to paint murals for his house and Klimt was given the responsibility of decorating his music room. This is the first real evidence of Klimt’s change in style. He begins to look inward, trying to please himself with his art instead of trying to please everyone around him. During this time, he paints Music II and Schubert at the Piano as well as Nuda Veritas later on in the same year. All of these works have a glowing orange/yellow coloration that’s very common in Klimt’s most famous works. It’s easy to see that his anatomy, especially female, begins to take a turn away from hyperrealism and develops more into a unique style. This evolution of style eventually goes so far as to be considered pornographic and perverse by the general public, much different from his highly acclaimed and popular work from school.3

Examination of Materials:
Klimt worked in…

Style Analysis

Klimt’s first notable and important work of art was also the last government-issued commission he ever took on. In 1894 he was commissioned by the University of Vienna to create three paintings for their Great Hall, depicting philosophy, medicine and jurisprudence.4 An issue arose between Matsch and Klimt that went unresolved that caused a great delay in this project, which easily could have added to Klimt’s irritation with the whole procedure.5 Each of his paintings was titled with the same names and depicted nude women and “overtly sexual” themes. He had taken symbolism to a new level, and it wasn’t taken well by anyone – government, religious or the general public.6 A poll was taken, and it was decided that his paintings were too pornographic, and thus, were never hung in the Great Hall.7 Klimt inevitably became frustrated and realized public commissions wouldn’t allow him the freedom he wanted with his artwork and refused to take on any more. Sadly, the SS destroyed these beautiful pieces of work during World War II, and few photos remain to preserve them.

Later on, Klimt entered a Golden Age in his artwork, which not only referred to his work being publicly accepted once again, but also to his famous use of gold leaf within many of his paintings.8 During this time, Klimt created the painting The Kiss, which could easily be considered his most famous painting. It is meant to “celebrate the attraction of the sexes”9 with a man leaning over a woman in assertive/passive poses. The robe and clothing in this painting is due credit for the painting’s success and lack of criticism from critics.10 The sexual nature of the painting still seems evident, but Klimt has disguised it in a way that makes it appealing and non-offensive to the public of the time. It is speculated that the mosaics of Venice and Ravenna inspired Klimt during this time.

The Golden Age produced many amazing works of art for Klimt, one of the most memorable being a frieze in Palais Stoclet, the home of a Belgian industrialist. In 1909 he collaborated with several other artists, but personally painted two intricate and beautiful mosaics in the dining room called Fulfillment and Expectation. Klimt even states that they are “probably the ultimate stage of my development of ornate”. These works are considered to be exceptional examples of the art nouveau movement.11 He created these mosaics in a workshop in Vienna out of precious materials such as gold, silver and jewels.12 This was the last wall that Klimt ever decorated.13 The patterning on each of these is intricate and connected to the other, creating an amazing piece of work that lives up to Klimt’s standards.

For part of his life, Klimt was also part of the Vienna secession, as one of the founding members and also the president for some time. He was part of this group from 1897 to 1908, and during that time was part of their periodical, Ver Sacrum. Their goal was to show and publish the best work, and bring the best work to Vienna without being prejudice on style or type of artwork, while focusing on young artists.14 Later on, Klimt began to view the utopian ideals of the secession as obsolete and decided to give up on the great movement he had built.
Towards the very end of his life, Klimt created the painting Life and Death as he contemplated the nearing of the end of his life.15 This painting won him first prize in the world exhibitions that was held in Rome. This was one of his last great paintings, as he died 7 years later, in 1918, due to stroke and pneumonia.
Klimt led a very productive and successful life. He seemed to come to terms with the tragedy of poverty and his brother and father dying at an early age. His work is still highly regarded today and is said to sell for some of the highest prices in the market, beating out even Picasso.16 Although most illustrators go unnoticed by the general public in today’s world, Klimt is one of the lucky few that gets recognition even from the most unusual of places and people.

Piacere a molti è male.” A presto!

So some people have been asking me recently… Ning, what IS that painting on the wall near your kitchenette?

Well, it’s none other than a reproduction of Der Kuss (The Kiss) by Austrian artist, Gustav Klimt. It’s my favorite painting of his, and I dare say it’s his most beautiful work

Der Kuss by Gustav Klimt

My studio apartment’s not very big, so I left most of my personal collections (reproductions of paintings by Botero, Van Gogh, etc.) at my folk’s place and my office. But Klimt’s painting had always caught my eye as something very special, a couple in love.

Marc Chagall’s La Mariée (The Bride) made an appearance in Nottinghill, one of my favorite films, and Julia Robert’s character tells the male protagonist that love’s only complete with a cello playing goat… quirky niceties that makes a memorable line for a movie, but I think Klimt’s painting does it more for me

La Marie (The Bride) by Marc Chagall

I mean no disrespect of course, but to me, Klimt’s Der Kuss is direct and straight to the point. Marc Chagall’s works always have a dreamlike quality to them, but with this, it’s really about that current moment – as if the lovers are in their own universe, and they really are the center of attention, I mean, the canvas/ frame *grin*

There’s bold love and beauty, and shades of passion surround the couple locked in a tight embrace, entwined into one. Like soulmates, who complete each other.

You feel what the artist wants you to feel immediately, when you take a moment to soak it all in and appreciate Klimt’s sensuous masterpiece. What hits you immediately is the strength of the bond. Unbreakable. Solid. Golden. Glowing.

The original painting is located at Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, in Vienna so maybe most of us may never get to see it with our own eyes …but the colors really pop, as Klimt artfully used oil and golf leaf on canvas, wich would have been very contemporary in his time.

Righty, so much for the art history lesson for today *grin* But seriously, he’s got some really fascinating works that he made in the early 1900s like Danaë & Mulher Sentada, for instance.

Look up Gustav Klimt online before you head to a gallery or library. The artist’s also got a very fascinating life, without any unrealized ambitions

The Klimt University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings, also known as the Faculty Paintings, were a series of paintings made by Gustav Klimt for the ceiling of the University of Vienna’s Great Hall between the years of 1900-1907. In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to paint the ceiling. Upon presenting his paintings, Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence, Klimt came under attack for ‘pornography’ and ‘perverted excess’ in the paintings. None of the paintings would go on display in the university. In May 1945 all three paintings were destroyed by retreating SS forces.

•

Gustav Klimt’s painting Medicine (1901), which was destroyed in 1945. The photo was taken at the time and is the only surviving picture of the painting

•

The paintings were attacked by critics when they were presented, as each painting broke different cultural taboos, contradicting the trend of the era to ’sublimate reality and to only present its more favourable aspects.

The paintings also drew the standard charges of obscenity which Klimt often faced. Eighty-seven faculty members protested against the murals, and in 1901 a public prosecutor was called in and the issue even reached the Parliament of Austria, the first time that a cultural debate had ever been raised there, but in the end no action was taken. Only the education minister defended Klimt, and when Klimt was elected to be a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1901 the government refused to ratify the action. He was never offered another teaching position. This would also be the last time Klimt would accept commissions from the state, remarking: “I’ve had enough of censorship…I reject all state support, I don’t want any of it.”

A later painting of his entitled Goldfish (to my critics) (1901-1902) which showed a smiling, beautiful woman projecting her bottom at the viewer, an obvious response to all those who attacked the ‘pornography’ and perverted excess’ of the University paintings.

Gustav Klimt (1862 – 1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. His major works include paintings, murals, sketches, and other art objects, many of which are on display in the Vienna Secession gallery. Klimt’s primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism.

•

Gustav Klimt was a controversial figure in his time. His work was constantly criticized for being too sensual and erotic, and his symbolism too deviant. Today, they stand out as the more important paintings ever to come out of Vienna.

•

In 1894, Klimt was commissioned to create three paintings to decorate the ceiling of the Great Hall in the University of Vienna. Not completed until the turn of the century, his three paintings, Philosophy, Medicine and Jurisprudence were criticized for their radical themes and material, which was called “pornographic”. Klimt had transformed traditional allegory and symbolism into a new language which was more overtly sexual, and hence more disturbing. The public outcry came from all quarters — political, aesthetic, and religious. As a result, they were not displayed on the ceiling of the Great Hall. This would be the last public commission accepted by the artist. All three paintings were destroyed by retreating SS forces in May 1945.
