<title><![CDATA[Let's change the way we program concerts]]></title>

<p><a href="http://sdjewishworld.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/david_amos.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-489" title="david_amos" src="http://sdjewishworld.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/david_amos.jpg?w=107" alt="" width="107" height="150" /></a>SAN DIEGO—One of the big challenges in the artistic administration of an orchestra, opera company, or chamber music series is making the right choices of what music to present. Many factors come into play. With less classical music education in our schools and less exposure at home, we have the obvious recipe of shrinking and graying audiences for the present and future. Just look around you!</p>
<p>The paying public will attend concerts for two basic reasons: If it likes the music being played, or if there is a superstar performer in the roster. The great, legendary impresario Sol Hurok used to say, “If the people do not want to go to a concert, there is nothing that you can do to stop them!”</p>
<p>So, how do you reach a sensible balance between creating new audiences, keeping the serious listeners you already have, and at the same time not compromise tradition, artistic values, beauty, and the commitment to the continuation of the art form? Not an easy task, but there are some points to keep in mind.</p>
<p>Do you stubbornly program traditional music only, present it the old fashioned way, and expect to keep the orchestral concert and chamber recital alive? Or, do you cater totally to the popular tastes to attract the marginal concertgoer by scheduling a heavy dose of the <em>1912 Overture, Bolero, </em>and other easy to hear, but overdone classics? The less playful is our choice of music, the more it is labeled heavy or dull; adventurous programming runs the danger of being called superficial, esoteric, and even silly.</p>
<p>Where is the balance?</p>
<p>Most young people are well informed of pop music and culture, but have never been exposed (let’s say “correctly exposed”) to our beloved classical music. Many have never been to a concert, and are uncomfortable with the traditional attire and concert etiquette. This, sadly, also applies to most of the adult population, more and more every year.</p>
<p>My wife and I are trying to do our part, and I humbly invite you to do something similar: In 2008, we took our seven year old grandson to a concert of the Seattle Symphony, at Benaroya Hall, conducted by Gerard Schwarz. The music way by no means lightweight: Mahler’s <em>Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of A Thousand”.</em> His first live orchestral experience was a symphony orchestra, chorus, children’s chorus, expanded brass section, and soloists, all in a package of 80 uninterrupted minutes, together with 2400 other adults. He survived it just fine, enjoyed the concert, and a year and a half later, we fondly still talk about it with him. We have subsequently taken him to other similar concerts.</p>
<p>This may be an exception, but how can we provide the younger generations a favorable introduction and exposure, and not scare them away with what they would, not surprisingly, regard as a stiff, dull, somber, and expensive exercise? The music itself is not attraction enough when so many other elements of the traditional concert experience are so foreign. We also have to cope with the vast competition from other forms of entertainment, sports, active and passive, the wonderful outdoors, and other activities.</p>
<p>To my opinion, we have to make the concert experience more accessible and attractive, not by pandering to popularity and selling out what in snooty circles is called “bad taste”, but by being more flexible and pliant in the concert procedure and choice of music. Keep in mind that our society rewards and even demands mediocrity. Serious art simply does not sell well, and we have to solve our puzzle within these limitations.</p>
<p>At the same time, we can not ignore that musical organizations have a budget, heavy expenses, and to survive, can not consistently lose money. No rational manager or board would allow the financial demise of its organization, considering all the options available. Add to this the world’s present financial crunch, where all arts organizations have been severely affected.</p>
<p>What to do?</p>
<p>Mix it up. Program serious music in the same evening with tasteful, but lighter fare. Look at the old programs from the beginning of the Twentieth Century when there was a nice blend of tradition, beauty, fun, newness, and excitement. (It is <span style="text-decoration:underline;">not </span>good programming to have two Bruckner symphonies in the same evening!).</p>
<p>Promote the organization in non-traditional venues. If you wish to attract new subscribers, do not preach to the choir, look outside the usual forms of publicity. Others are doing it, and succeeding in reaching a wider audience of potential concertgoers. Creative thinking is not forbidden.</p>
<p>Relax the traditional concert attire requirements. It is already happening. Also, musicians on stage do not have to be in tails and long gowns all the time, looking like something out of a museum. Brahms sounds just as well if played in blue jeans, although I am not exactly suggesting this. People in the audience can dress tastefully, but not ostentatiously. Avoid the unnecessary fashion show to impress others. What matters in the music, the experience of the moment. Do you wear a coat and tie to listen to a piano concerto in your stereo at home? I don’t think so.</p>
<p>Verbal explanations from the stage before the music is played, either by the conductor or a more eloquent someone else, is not insulting anyone’s intelligence. It is not hokey and improper. We, the more enlightened ones have to be more flexible and understanding if the art form is to be rescued. Besides, you will never know when you learn something new. In general, it helps many people appreciate and enjoy the music, and encourages them to come back. It also relaxes the stuffiness of the air, which many of us don’t even notice. Regular concertgoers are so used to the ritual, that they are not aware how intimidating all of this can be to the uninitiated.</p>
<p>Choose exciting, vibrant music. Bring it to life through well prepared performances. Avoid the stale, academic detached presentations that do nothing to promote our cause.  The conductor and musicians have to be aware more than ever that they are communicating something special to the audience in the hall. When energy flows both ways, (and this happens some of the time), it is a wonderful memory for everyone involved.</p>
<p>Arnold Schoenberg said, “Play the classics as if they are new music, and play new music as if they are already classics”.</p>
<p>Pablo Casals said that we, the musicians have to “make divine things human, and human things divine”.</p>
<p>If more of these ideas are practiced, the word will get around.</p>

Nie mam pojęcia, o co chodzi w tekście (coś o zabijaniu myszy), ale tytuł o wyciąganiu noży wystarczy na miejsce piąte. Fragment interpretacji anonimowego internauty: &#8220;Wg mnie to o zerwaniu (&#8230;) mysz może oznaczać uczucie gniewu albo smutku&#8230;&#8221; A, no to już wiadomo.<!--more--></p>
<p>4.<strong> <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZsfpQP7SPw" target="_blank">Nick Cave, PJ Harvey &#38; The Bad Seeds &#8211; Henry Lee</a></strong>. Bohaterem jest zazdrosna panna i jej mały scyzoryk. Dziewczyna czekająca na Nicka Cave&#8217;a się nie doczeka, bo PJ Harvey go rzeczonym narzędziem przebiła. Na płycie <em>Murder Ballads</em> był też inny niezły męsko-damsko-zabójczy duet, ale tam użyto prostackiego kamienia i Kylie Minogue.</p>
<p>3. <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfRK0u3PXLM" target="_blank">Gustav Mahler &#8211; Ich hab&#8217; ein glühend Messer</a></strong>. Nóż w sercu wprawdzie tylko metaforyczny, ale za to jak boli: &#8220;O weh! O weh!&#8221; Ach, te austriackie kobiety. Już o tym pisałem &#8211; najwyraźniej mam świra na punkcie tej pieśni. Nie pytajcie dlaczego, bo nie wiem.</p>
<p>2. <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBRu4yx6HBw" target="_blank">Breakout &#8211; Oni zaraz przyjdą tu</a></strong>. Nóż nie metaforyczny, ale do chleba. &#8220;Już nie będziesz zdradzać mnie&#8221; &#8211; stwierdzenie w zasadzie prawdziwe, choć triumfalizm podmiotu lirycznego nie do końca uzasadniony. Ale co za riff, proszę państwa, co za riff!</p>
<p>1. <strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QXJ3OXWaOY" target="_blank">Kurt Weill / Bertolt Brecht – Die Moritat von Mackie Messer</a></strong>. Na pierwszym miejscu nie mógł być nikt inny, jak tylko człowiek-nóż, czyli Mackie Messer z Opery za trzy grosze. Piosenka, zwana też Mackie Majcher albo Mack the Knife najlepiej brzmi w wykonaniu autora słów Bertolda Brechta. Lepszego &#8220;r&#8221; w każdym razie nigdzie nie usłyszycie.</p>
<p>Jeśli usuną któryś link, to Mackie ich znajdzie. Jeśli macie inne propozycje, to słucham. Jeśli ktoś ma ochotę użyć dowcipnego powiedzenia &#8220;a nuż widelec&#8221;, niech o tym zapomni. Oto lista pięciu utworów muzycznych, które odnoszą się do konkretnych pór dnia. Żeby było ciekawie, listę postanowiłem ograniczyć do muzyki poważnej. Więc proszę nie liczyć na <em>Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)</em> ani na którąś z pięćdziesięciu piosenek o tytule <em>Sunday Morning</em>. Zaczynamy od świtu:<!--more--></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0PLG5SEDu4" target="_blank"><em>Świt nad rzeką Moskwą</em>, Modest Musorgski</a></strong>. Początek opery <em>Chowańszczyzna</em>, której nie widziałem, ale ma świetny tytuł. Fragment ten ilustruje najprawdopodobniej świt nad rzeką Moskwą.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NlaYS8pQ6I" target="_blank"><em>Sunday Morning</em>, Benjamin Britten</a></strong>. O, jednak będzie ten tytuł! Jeden z instrumentalnych przerywników <em>Sea Interludes </em>z opery<em> Peter Grimes</em>. Miał być <em>Poranek</em> Griega, ale przez kilka lat miałem to jako budzik w telefonie, więc już mi wystarczy.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7b1FkZYarU" target="_blank"><em>Popołudnie fauna</em>, Claude Debussy</a></strong>. Przełomowy utwór &#8211; po nim muzyka poważna nie była już nigdy sobą. Nie mylić z &#8220;Popołudniem fauny&#8221;, popularnym programem przyrodniczym.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppoqUVlKkBU" target="_blank"><em>Im Abendrot</em>, Richard Strauss</a></strong>. Tytuł &#8220;O zmierzchu&#8221; oznacza tu wprawdzie ostatnie lata życia. Żeby jednak pasowało do listy, udajmy, że to tylko o tym, jak słonko zachodzi.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ad6vaY8wOto" target="_blank"><em>Um Mitternacht</em>, Gustav Mahler</a></strong>. W ten oto późnoromantyczny sposób dotarliśmy do północy. Najlepsza pozycja na płycie <em>Mahler Midnight Moods</em>. Nie mylić z piosenką <em>Gib mir, gib mir, gib mir einen Mann nach Mitternacht</em>.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Sinfonía número 7. Mahler]]></title>

<p><em><a href="http://dosostenidomenor.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/mahler.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-564" title="MAHLER" src="http://dosostenidomenor.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/mahler.jpg?w=239" alt="" width="239" height="300" /></a>Ivan Sollertinski</em> emparentaba el sinfonismo de <em>Tchaikovsky </em>y <em>Mahler</em>, ambos <em>atormentados y sin miedo a atormentar</em>, ambos <em>planteando los malditos interrogantes de su siglo en sus sinfonías</em>. En las raíces de ese tormento comentado por <em>Sollertinski</em>, a menudo se encuentran las dudas. Las dudas sobre el resultado del trabajo, sobre la excelencia de las composiciones. Estas dudas son otras constantes en la vida de muchos compositores. Sufridores, sufrientes y dudosos de la calidad de sus trabajos. Tremendamente exigentes, obsesionados con la perfección, perdidos entre las dudas encontradas en el recorrido de ese camino hacia una perfección que en sí misma, es fuente de sufrimiento.</p>
<p>Durante el verano de 1905, <em>Gustav Mahler </em>(1860-1911) concluyó la composición de su <em>Séptima Sinfonía</em>, llamada <em>Canción de la Noche</em> y comenzada el verano anterior, en su retiro de <em>Maiernigg</em>. Al finalizarla, comenzaron las primeras dudas. Dudas relacionadas con la coherencia de la obra. Dudas, en particular, sobre su orquestación.</p>
<p>Sin abandonar sus dudas, en el verano de 1908, tres años después de haber concluido su escritura, <em>Mahler </em>preparó su estreno en <em>Praga </em>y durante los ensayos realizó importantes cambios en la orquestación, motivados, sin duda, por la experiencia adquirida en la creación de la octava sinfonía que ya estaba terminada por aquellas fechas.</p>
<p>Finalmente, el estreno de la Séptima sinfonía, tuvo lugar en <em>Praga</em>, el 19 de septiembre de 1908, con <em>Mahler </em>dirigiendo. El público respondió con la indiferencia, lo que se tradujo, inevitablemente, en nuevas dudas, pese al aplauso y reconocimiento de <em>Bruno Walter</em>, <em>Otto Klemperer</em> y <em>Alban Berg</em>, allí presentes.</p>
<p>Entre el estreno y las subsecuentes ejecuciones de la Séptima sinfonía en <em>Munich </em>y <em>Amsterdam</em>, el compositor realizó nuevas correcciones, de nuevo con la intención de alcanzar esa perfección en la obra que no acabada de sentir.</p>
<p>A la noche, como símbolo, se le ha dado el mismo sentido que a la muerte, la oscuridad, lo negro. Pero también tiene sentido de estado previo, de preparación, de simiente que antecede lo que aún no es día. Y, desde antes de <em>Freud</em>, se la relaciona con el inconsciente, lo oculto. La Séptima de <em>Mahler </em>viaja de la noche hacia el día, de la niebla a la luz, con sobresaltos, intermitencias y paradojas, de las cuartas verticales, las disonancias bruscas y lo irregular a lo reglamentario, a una luz que para ser futuro es más antigua que la noche romántica, a una risa excéntrica, o lúcida, risa al fin y al cabo.</p>
<p>Dudas sobre la orquestación. Sin embargo, intuyo que siempre, desde un primer momento, tuvo claro que la tuba debería estar presente en los primeros compases. No olvidemos de que se trata de &#8230; <em>La Canción de la Noche</em> &#8230; Escuchémosla &#8230;</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">O conto de fadas Branca de Neve, dos Irmãos Grimm, ganhou uma roupagem moderna em <em><strong>Blanche Neige</strong></em>, montagem do Ballet de Preljocaj, e estará em cartaz de 6 a 8 de novembro, no Teatro Alfa, em São Paulo, em comemoração ao Ano da França no Brasil.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;"> <img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-743" title="blancheneigepeq" src="http://fernandadona.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/blancheneigepeq.jpg" alt="blancheneigepeq" width="100" height="75" />Nesta montagem, a obra manteve a versão da história dos Irmãos Grimm, com poucas variações, baseadas nas interpretações pessoais do coreógrafo Angelin Preljocaj. A música é do austríaco Gustav Mahler; os cenários e a iluminação são simples mas impactantes; e a companhia se apresenta completa pela primeira vez no Brasil, com seus 26 bailarinos. Branca de Neve é interpretada pela bailarina japonesa Nagisa Shirai, e a rainha,  por Céline Galli.</p>
<p style="text-align:center;">Os figurinos são do estilista francês Jean-Paul Gaultier, o mesmo que criou, entre outras &#8220;fantasias&#8221;, os sutiãs cônicos que Madonna usou na turnê &#8220;Blonde Ambition&#8221;, em 1990.</p>

Das <a href="http://www.zeitkunst-festival.de/index.html" target="_blank">Festival Zeitkunst</a> möchte mit dem künstlerischen Dialog zwischen Kammermusik und Gegenwartsliteratur neue Wege beschreiten. Es ist das Anliegen der Initiatoren, die Qualitäten und Eigenarten beider Künste zu verbinden und diese Verbindung über die Dauer des Festivals hinaus ins öffentliche Interesse zu rücken.</p>
<p>Die 33 internationalen Musiker, zeitgenössischen Autoren und Schauspieler werden gemeinsam die Anknüpfungspunkte zwischen Text und Musik erkunden, herausbilden, hör- und erlebbar machen.</p>
<p>Die programmatische Zusammenstellung der Konzert-Lesungen folgt der Perspektive, die Interdisziplinarität zwischen den Künsten hervorzuheben. So dienen den Autoren einerseits ausgewählte Kammermusikwerke als Inspirationsmaterial, andererseits wurden zwei außergewöhnliche Komponisten gewonnen, die für das Festival ein Werk zu mehreren Texten junger Autoren komponieren.</p>
<p>Das direkte, sinntragende Miteinander von Literatur und Musik erhält durch das Festival Zeitkunst eine neue, visionäre Plattform.</p>

<p>We were having our evening tea with Gustav Mahler&#8217;s Symphony No. 3 playing in the background when Pat said to me, &#8220;What is this song?&#8221; I listened for a couple of seconds and said, &#8220;That&#8217;s &#8216;I&#8217;ll Be Seeing You,&#8217; &#8221; but as the music continued we realized that wasn&#8217;t correct. We had forgotten what we were listening to. Still, the theme was repeated a little later, and damned if that wasn&#8217;t &#8220;I&#8217;ll Be Seeing You.&#8221;</p>
<p>That happens to be one of my favorite songs. It was written in 1938 for a Broadway turkey called &#8220;Right This Way&#8221; &#8211; lyrics by Irving Kahal, music by Sammy Fain. The combination of the melody and the words is powerful, and the song had a particular resonance during World War II, when so many Americans were separated from loved ones fighting in Europe, Africa, or the Pacific.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1494" title="Poster - I'll Be Seeing You_01" src="http://charlespaolino.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/poster-ill-be-seeing-you_01.jpg?w=99" alt="Poster - I'll Be Seeing You_01" width="99" height="150" />The song was resurrected as the main theme of a 1944 movie by the same name, starring Joseph Cotten and Ginger Rogers. Bing Crosby recorded it that same year, and the recording made it to the top of the charts.</p>
<p>But what of Gustav Mahler? It turns out that a British musicologist named Deryck Cooke, who was something of an authority on the Austrian composer, pointed out almost 40 years ago that the first four lines of Fain&#8217;s tune very closely resemble a repeated passage in Mahler&#8217;s Third.</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t miss much.</p>
<p>Mr. Fain &#8212; if you please &#8212; one more time:</p>

<p>Was im Westen unter dem Namen Zen-Buddhismus bekannt ist, stammt ursprünglich aus China und wird dort Chan genannt. Im Chan wird das Augenmerk auf das unmittelbare Erleben als Quelle des Erwachens gelegt. Das bewusste Ausführen einer jeden Alltagshandlung ist der Kern einer erleuchteten Lebensweise. <p>Entstanden zur Zeit der Homerischen Epen und des Rigveda der Inder gehört das chinesische Buch der Lieder und Gedichte (Shijing) zu den ältesten literarischen Erzeugnissen der Menschheit. <p>Im Herbst 1907 gab der Lyriker Hans Bethge im Insel-Verlag einen Band mit Nachdichtungen chinesischer Lyrik heraus: &#8220;Die Chinesische Flöte&#8221;. Die Resonanz war außerordentlich. Der liedhafte Ton, die musikalisch-rhythmische Sprache Hans Bethges hat nicht nur die Leser bezaubert, sondern viele Komponisten zu Vertonungen seiner Gedichte angeregt. Herausragendes Beispiel ist Gustav Mahler, den sieben Gedichte aus der „Chinesischen Flöte“ zu seinem „Lied von der Erde“ inspiriert haben.<br />
&#8220;Alma, Gustav Mahlers Frau, erzählt in ihrem Buch „Mein Leben“:<br />
„Er“, (Dr. Pollak), „brachte mir die kostbarsten Leckerbissen, Bücher, Noten. Und so kam er einmal mit Bethges „Chinesischer Flöte“, einer Sammlung von Gedichten, vor allem von Li-Tai-Pe. Die Gedichte entzückten mich, und ich las sie Gustav Mahler immer wieder vor, bis er daraus … „Das Lied von der Erde“ machte.“</p>
<p>Der große Erfolg der &#8220;Chinesischen Flöte&#8221; veranlaßte Bethge, weitere Nachdichtungen aus anderen orientalischen und fernöstlichen Kulturen zu veröffentlichen, auch einen zweiten Band mit klassischer chinesischer Lyrik:</p>

<p><span style="font-family:Arial;line-height:double;">El próximo miércoles <strong>Alan Gilbert </strong>se estrenará como el nuevo director musical de la <strong>Orquesta Filarmónica de Nueva York</strong> con un concierto que se transmitirá por televisión por cable, en vivo desde el Lincoln Center. Durante la presentación  que marcará su debut con la más antigua de las orquestas estadounidenses, Gilbert  estrenará <em>EXPO</em> una obra comisionada a <strong>Magnus Lindberg</strong>, compositor en residencia de la institución musical. Ésta será la primera ocasión que una obra nueva se incluye en el programa inicial de una temporada de la Filarmónica de Nueva York, desde que en 1962 Bernstein estrenó <em>Connotations</em> de <strong>Aaron Copland </strong>para inaugurar el Avery Fisher Hall. La orquesta también interpretará la Sinfonía fantástica de <strong>Berlioz</strong> y los <em>Poèmes pour MI </em>de <strong>Messiaen</strong> con la participación de la soprano <strong>Renée Fleming</strong></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Arial;line-height:double;">Durante su primera temporada, Gilbert buscará equilibrar los programas brindando presencia a música del siglo XX  con repertorio clásico y romántico . De igual forma, tiene planeada la realización de dos giras por Asia y Europa.</p>
<p><span style="font-family:Arial;line-height:double;">Tanto el padre como la madre de Gilbert (ambos violinistas) formaron parte de la Filarmónica de Nueva York. Por lo que de alguna manera el director ha estado vinculado con la institución desde su propia infancia. Egresado de la Universidad de Harvard, la Escuela Juilliard y el Instituto Curtis, el joven músico estuvo al frente de la <strong>Filarmónica Real de Estocolmo</strong> durante 8 años. Gilbert es el primer músico nacido en Nueva York en dirigir a la orquesta más importante de la ciudad. Sin embargo,  algunos escépticos, han criticado que un conductor de tan sólo 42 años de edad se haga cargo del ensamble.</p>
<p><span style="font-family:Arial;line-height:double;">La agrupación  ha sido dirigida por batutas como <strong>Gustav Mahler</strong>, <strong>Arturo Toscanini</strong>, <strong>John Barbirolli</strong>, <strong>Dimitri Mitropoulos</strong> y <strong>Leonard Bernstein</strong>. En las últimas tres décadas, personalidades como <strong>Pierre Boulez</strong>, <strong>Zubin Mehta</strong>, <strong>Kurt Mazur</strong> y <strong>Lorin Maazel</strong> se han encargado de conducir los destinos del ensamble con más tradición en los Estados Unidos.</p>

Jahrhunderts ohne Altersbegrenzung einlädt, Werke in jenen drei Kategorien einzureichen, für die Gustav Mahler Kompositionen geschaffen hat: a) Klavierlied b) Klavierquartett c) Orchester.<br />
Es ist kein konkreter Mahler-Bezug gefordert, allerdings sollten die ausgewählten Werke «in Anlehnung an Mahlers Modernität und seinen weitreichenden Einfluss auf die Musikentwicklung des 20. Jahrhunderts im besten Sinne innovativ und in die Zukunft blickend» gestaltet sein.<br />
Die Dauer des Werkes soll maximal 15 Minuten betragen; die max. Besetzung: 3-3-3-3, 4-4-3-1, 1 Pauker, 3 Schlagzeuger, 1 Harfe, 14-12-10-8-6 (Holzbläser inkl. Nebeninstrumente). <title><![CDATA[Successful Musical Diplomacy]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>One area of research competence and interest for me involves musical diplomacy, particularly as it has effected the US-China bilateral relationship.  I spoke about the topic at <a href="http://history.state.gov/whatshappening/conferences/2006-china-cold-war/program">this State Department conference in 2006</a> where I met Christopher Hill and got in his ear (and those of other State officials including Asst. Secretary of State for East Asia Tom Christensen) about using music as a channel with the North Koreans.  It took about 18 months for the North Koreans to welcome the New York Philharmonic after these conversations.</p>
<p><a href="http://china.usc.edu/ShowEvent.aspx?EventID=484&#38;AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1">More stuff is in the works</a> along these lines pairing <a href="http://www.h-net.org/~diplo/roundtables/PDF/Roundtable-X-18.pdf">my work on US-China relations in the 1970s</a> with ongoing interests in North Korean music (including <a href="http://mcfarland.metapress.com/app/home/contribution.asp?referrer=parent&#38;backto=issue,9,11;journal,2,8;linkingpublicationresults,1:120199,1">its educational uses</a> as well as <a href="http://www.popms.org/forthcoming.html">for military mobilization</a> and function within North Korean-Chinese relations).</p>
<p>Today I was somehow gifted with the concurrence of three things, and strangely so: the deadline for resubmission of a revised article to Acta Koreana on musical diplomacy and North Korea, my Cleveland Institute of Music alumni magazine (with a profile of model composer, educational thinker, and eurhythmics proponent Ernst Bloch, no less), and a completely random e-mail from the Juilliard School in New York.</p>
<p>It appears that Juilliard will be cashing in on <a href="http://www.juilliard.edu/update/journal/j_articles503.html">some earlier contacts with Chinese music administrators </a>and going for broke with an unabashedly pro-China extravaganza this fall.  When the New York Philharmonic has gone native, hiring a (Japanese-heritage) American music director for the first time in forever, what&#8217;s a conservatory to do?  Go the the well, that&#8217;s what!</p>
<p>The thing I love about this is the normalcy of it all.  Kurt Sassmannshaus and Cincinnati Conservatory have their festival every year in Beijing, Chinese music is more and more prevalent in this country, and exchanges happen every single day.</p>
<p>It seems that Beethoven beats Mao.</p>
<p>Would that thirty years from now, Pyongyang students are working their tails off in Juilliard, and that Cleveland Institute of Music faculty (and alumni) can go to the old Kim Il Sung University, or the Fine Arts department at Kim Chaek, to give more masterclasses or learn something new about pan&#8217;sori, and that we can all hear Shostakovich in Sinuiju.</p>
<p>Until then <strong>here is the press release from Juilliard</strong>.  Note the language of ancient diplomacy whereby we, the barbarians, pay homage to the greatness of the kingdom in question.  Because I can&#8217;t help myself, I will make little descriptive comments in brackets:</p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;"><em>Ancient Paths, Modern Voices</em>, a festival celebrating [ancient and mysterious] Chinese culture, presented by </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">[the ghost of Isaac Stern] </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">Carnegie Hall.  The concert takes place in [gorgeously decadent and autumnal] New York City from October 21 – November 10. The festival [and I could not make this up] <strong>pays tribute to China</strong>’s [happy, shining minorities including Tibetans with refrigerators full of beer] </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">diverse </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">and vibrant [mass line] culture and its </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">[soft power and Confucius Institutes] </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">influence around the [otherwise budget-cutting] world with 21 days of events [which will certainly not correspond to any major earthquakes, anti-CNN campaigns, Dalai Lama visits to anywhere, or upsurges of Chinese nationalism]. As </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">[supplicant] </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">partner, Juilliard presents an all-[Qin Shihuang] Tan Dun [HOLY SHIT] program on Monday, October 26 at 7:30 PM in [that renovated yet still poor substitute for "The Egg" in Beijing,] Alice Tully Hall.  The [half-Korean] Juilliard Orchestra [who would be NY Phil members but for the fact that none of the unionized dead wood will retire] will be conducted by the [bald and dashing] composer [as he sweats like James Levine into a Chinese tunic, hands bereft of baton or any discernible ictus].  The program features [giant Chinese drums and] the world premiere of Tan Dun’s [Giant Gong and] Violin Concerto with [treble-clef fluent yet red-faced-and-puffing-and-strangely-unable-to-just-let-his-arm-weight-pull-on-the-string-thus-resulting-in-a-pressed-tone-in-spite-of his-gorgeous-Strad-which-is-owned-by-HSBC] soloist and Juilliard faculty member and [debtor] alumnus, Cho-Liang Lin [whose familial relations with the mainland will not be described here]. Chamber works by [the incredible Oriental mystic] Tan Dun – Concerto for Six [Giant Drums], [mysterious and Chinese] Secret Land [with program notes about bamboo forests which will surely evoke flying kung fu artists] for orchestra and 12 cellos [Holy Bacchianas Brasiliaras!], and Silk Road [no! snap! he didn't just do that!]- complete the October [dear God we are all going to be ruled by Xi Jinping soon] 26 program. FREE tickets are available [and will no doubt be scalped by someone named "Jimmy"] two weeks [in the mad and disorganized scramble] before the event [outside a certain fragrant restaurant]. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:#0000ff;">On [the very auspiciously-numbered day which portends great wealth for all participants]  October 28 at 8 PM [after the initial proposal for a April 4 at 4 p.m. was declined as a portent of mass carnage], Carnegie Hall [longing for the body of David Robertson instead] presents [the resurrection of Leonard Bernstein] conductor [educator, and self-admitted spotlight hog who nevertheless plays in Florida with conservatory graduates who, but for their non-union contracts with the New World Symphony and occasional Pops run-outs to Miami golf courses, would be eating Ramen noodles in a frigid 1993 Nissan Sentra on their way to a $70 gig in Erie, Pa.] Michael Tilson Thomas [of San Francisco] leading the [almost-professional yet undeniably tuition-paying] Juilliard [half-Korean] Orchestra with guest [northeastern Chinese 东北人/活雷锋/你干啥呀] artist pianist Lang Lang [and his humble erhu-playing father who shockingly once applied pressure to his only son] in the world premiere [not including the dress rehearsal for a few select donors, a serious-looking-graduate student with a score, and the Chinese consul general] of a new work for [Lang Lang's profile and] piano and orchestra by Chen Qigang; Lou Harrison’s Pacifika Rondo; Chinese works for solo piano </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">[e.g., whatever the hell Lang Lang wants to play off the top of his big head] </span><span style="color:#0000ff;">; and Gustav Mahler’s [hallucination/<em>fin de siecle</em> Viennese pastiche on T'ang poetry] Das Lied von der Erde [Song of the Orc] with soprano Anne Sofie von Otter [who is unknown to me but obviously from Otter, and Teutonic, and thus must possess qualities of Gretchen, and who will radiate great healing beams of tone outward so powerful as to be rested upon by the id of a thousand aging and nostalgic males as a temporary personification of the perfect <em>ewige Weibliche</em> while she suffers the submerged wrath of said men's spouses as a perfidious Alma Mahler who will no doubt come up in the shawling aftermath of chit-chat, but at no point will anyone imagine her to be a willowy Chinese lass as imagined by T'ang poets whose translations she has studied] and tenor Gregory Kunde [who wishes he could be doing Siegfried at the Met as Seattle turned him down last year and he had to settle for this gig with a student orchestra who themselves might rather be eating hotpot in Seoul's Samcheongdong but at least they are not unionized and just gazing at the clock which is kind of endearing anyway]. Chen Qigang recently directed the [totally communist and totalitarian/very inspiring and patriotic] music program for the opening [rite] ceremony of the 2008 [eternal] Beijing [Berlin] Olympics.</span></p>
