I read an article many ears ago, that has suck in my mind ever since. It was about a  Harvard study on how the best business leaders make decisions. It went on to describe how they would collect data, test hypothesis, do research, ask others opinions, do the numbers, etc, but in the end universally after doing their best research and evaluation, they all said then they  would lean back in their chair and trust their gut instinct…

Wow I thought, with great excitement,  in the end the best decision makers of the time, the leaders of successful corporations trusted their gut instinct to make the most important decisions.

I was both amazed and very excited as I have had a life time of making intuitive, gut decisions, because I get that feeling in me when I know I am onto something good. It is difficult to explain, my wife calls it the ping of truth, it is a sensation, an energy, a feeling, but when it happens I know it, when it is not happening I feel its absence and know that as well.

Very recently I was interested in a building that has been for sale for a while and I have been eyeing it with great interest and I called the broker who informed me it was under contract. I asked him to call me if it fell apart. It did and he called me back. It is an exceptional deal presumably perfect for in many ways for my intended use and I should have been very excited…but I wasn’t. I did not have that gut feeling of  excitement, my onward through the fog I go feeling…no yay!…no feeling of exhilaration, no sense of destiny, no ping of truth, no inner belief it was the right decision despite every logical analysis screaming buy, buy, buy!

So I have stepped away, and am not acting on this opportunity. Will I be remorseful when someone else buys it? No! Do I have any reason not to buy it? No, not one! I simply do not have that gut feeling telling me to do it….so I will not.

I am following my intuition, my gut feeling, rather then deciding by empirical evidence, numbers and any other analysis one may use. In fact all other evaluations scream buy it, except the one I deem most important my intuitive, unexplainable feeling of yes.

I believe this is the soul of entrepreneurial decision making, instinct, gut, intuition. I believe the Harvard study I reported about above had it right. The execs used empirical evidence to evaluate and analyse and then rested on their intuitive feelings to make he final decision. If empirical evidence said no, there may not be a reason to go further, if the empirical evidence said yes then check the gut and decide based on intuition.

If your good at this, irrespective of empirical evidence, research or numbers, do what ever your gut says despite what the more traditional evaluation process says…If you are good at this skill.

If this is foreign ground, you can learn to do this. Start with small decisions and try and feel the right decision, Experience success get familiar with the feeling so you can identify it when it happens again, and continue to experiement with it, and see the results. It works. You can develop this skill. It may be a skill you have but have ignored because you did not understand its power.

Now you do, do it, it works.

Trust your gut…it knows.

Trillions of microbes live inside the human gut, and one of their functions is to process foods that we can’t digest on our own. Recent studies have suggested that certain populations of microbes may be associated with obesity.  Using powerful DNA sequencing tools, scientists transplanted gut bugs into mice to mimic the microbial populations found in human samples.

The mice were switched from their standard low-fat, plant-rich diet to a diet high in fat and sugar.  In less than 24 hours the gut’s microbial populations abruptly changed.  These new collection of human microbes were then transplanted into germ-free mice.  Scientists found that these mice gained an increased amount of fat tissue even when fed low-fat diets, compared to mice that received human microbes from those that were fed low-fat diets. These findings suggest that our micro-biota may actually shape the way we respond to food.

This study found in the journal, Science Translational Medicine is just the beginning of what hopes to be a slew of experiments to discover how diet and microbes interact to affect nutrition and weight gain. Using these state-of-the-art sequencing techniques, scientists are eager to see what happens if gut populations are modified by changes in diet, antibiotics, or dietary supplements.  If experiments pan out the way researchers hope, these findings may lead identifying important microbial players that could be used in treating obesity.

AB ROCKET:  An Excellent Ab Machine

Ever since I left the thirties, I’ve been trying to lose the belly fat that comes with the territory.  Conventional sit-ups hurt my back, and all crunches seem to do is hurt my neck.  I saw the As Seen On TV commercial for the AB ROCKET, and thought it was worth a try.    They advertised that I could try it out for 30 days for $14.95 plus shipping and could return it if I didn’t like it, so I figured I didn’t have a whole lot to lose.   I did look at a lot of reviews before I ordered, though. The consensus was that if you were under 5’ 10”, and didn’t have a really huge gut, the AB ROCKET machine would provide muscle toning that would firm you up.  That’s really all I’m after…just to get rid of the sloppy looking stomach.

THE EQUIPMENT

It arrived, and I put it together pretty quickly.  The directions are straightforward, and, although the coils were a little challenging, it went together pretty easily.   The AB ROCKET sits on the floor, and is really nothing more than a fixed seat with a spring coil loaded back.  The back is made of rollers that are supposed to “massage” you while you are exercising.  I guess it does, but more than that, it accommodates my back movement while I’m doing the exercise.  The AB ROCKET comes with springs of three resistance levels, and I used the ones with the least resistance.  I figured I’d start off easy and then work my way up after using it awhile.

WORKING MY ABS

The way the springs are attached cause you to work as you go back, and then assist you in the “crunch” portion of the exercise.  The AB ROCKET supports my head and neck during the exercise so there’s no strain of those muscles involved, and my lower back isn’t sore either.
My experience has been really good, so I wound up paying the $120 to complete the purchase.  If you are a novice to exercise like me, the AB ROCKET is a great place to begin abdominal exercise.  I am noticing my stomach tightening up without the associated aches and pains of other ab regimens.  I have my own little routine that I start in front of the TV while watching the evening news, and  the little lady knows not to try to enforce one of her “honey-do” projects while I’m exercising.  Maybe one day I can talk her into a little toning too, but that’s a subject that I’ll have to tread softly with!

There are no senses. Senses are deceiving. If I were to rely on anything at all, it would be my gut.

I wake up and check my grades. Only the Practical exam grade is available. I passed, but just marginally. Nevertheless, I have improved since the last test. This next block is supposedly easier, so perhaps I can excel here.

Time to return to the Gross Lab. Since this is the start of a new block, our table’s been assigned to a new cadaver.

Our table is broken into two groups: A and B. I’m in B. While the Bs were in Histo yesterday, As did dissection. So today, a rep from Group A comes in and teaches us in Group B about their dissection and the appropriate structures from 8-9. 

At 9, we begin our work: opening the abdominal cavity to see the organs underneath, such as the small intestine, stomach, gallbladder, appendix, etc. Some of the bodies have clearly undergone surgeries where some of these organs have been removed. Since it’s mainly opening the cavity, we finish this one early.

Lunch time comes around. The CMDA has its Tuesday meeting, and this week they’ve asked me to lead the Bible study. I’ve prepared my own questions and lesson, and well, it goes as well as the other Bible studies. Fewer people this week, though. I realize I need to rehearse the study and questions a bit more next time.

1-3 lecture. Dr. Mawe talks about blood supply in the abdomen, as well as secretion, motility and control mechanisms in the gut.

There’s a lot of fascinating info here. You may have heard about the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), but the gut has its own: the enteric nervous system. This means that when detached from the brain and the rest of the body, a piece of colon can still move something through it!

Dr. Mawe also informs us that there are more neurons in the gut than their are in the spinal cord. And just after I thought about of Stephen Colbert, he shows us an interview from the Colbert Report with  Dr. Michael Gershon, who’s written a book about the gut called “The Second Brain: A Groundbreaking New Understanding of Nervous Disorders of the Stomach and Intestines (Your Gut Has a Mind of Its Own)” .

In MSLG this week, we’re discussing alternative and complementary medicine. So a craniosacral therapist comes in to discuss how he presses and rotates various areas to move fascia around and relieve cranial nerves. He even gives us a demo, and what he does seems harmless, since he barely moves the body around. He tells us he takes the approach that he’s interested in whatever cures the patient, whether it’s traditional allopathic medicine or another branch of alternative medicine.

Before that, though, we had our “check-in” time, which is essentially an ice-breaker/fun intro to whatever we do. It’s my turn to lead it this week. My idea: have everyone share a song they liked, and why.

We all go around and share our choices. (Mine was “Hello Hurricane” by Switchfoot.) When it’s the group leader’s turn, she suddenly pulls out an iPod and a speaker system. She plugs it in, plays “Bang On The Drum All Day” by Todd Rundgren, and urges us all to dance along to it with her. We do. We laugh very hard.

Kürzlich an einem Seminar über “Segnen & Heilen” fragte mich eine Teilnehmerin am Ende desselbigen, ob es das Böse m.E. gäbe oder nicht.
Noch ganz aufgekratzt vom Seminar selbst und komplett in der Heilenergie drin gab ich ihr ein “Nein” zur Antwort, was sie ziemlich verstörte, vor allem auch, als dann eine andere Teilnehmerin noch von ihrem Südamerika-Aufenthalt erzählte, wo es von Gewalt und offenbar Bösem nur so strotz(t)e…

Wenn ich nun auf das Heilen und Segnen schaue, bleibe ich gerne bei meiner Antwort. Wenn ich es aber auf die Welt tue, muss ich mir Unrecht geben. Wobei auch da immer noch zu differenzieren wäre, was denn nun genau “das Böse” überhaupt ist, wie es zu Stande kommt und welchen Anteil wir an ihm haben, bzw., was wir dagegen tun/lassen könn(t)en…

Item, wie gesagt, wenn ich diese Frage auf das Heilen beziehe, bleibe ich noch so gerne bei meinem “Nein“. Zwar ist auch da auseinander zu halten, ob und mit welcher Intention ich jemandem die Hand auflege. Doch grundsätzlich kann man/frau beim Heilen niemandem schaden.
Betrachten Sie einmal Kinder und Tiere. Wenn Sie denen begegnen, z.B. eben mit schlechten oder nur schon gut gemeinten Absichten (was ja noch lange nicht mit gut gleichzusetzen ist), so bekommen Sie die Reaktion augenblicklich zu spüren/sehen/… .

Als ich abends diese Veranstaltung nochmals Revue passieren liess, kam mir spontan ein Vers aus der Bibel in den Sinn, der mir bis anhin ziemlich verschlossen war. Er stammt vom Apostel Paulus (1Kor 15,55):

Tod, wo ist dein Sieg? Tod, wo ist dein Stachel?

An jenem Abend habe ich begriffen, dass es den Tod, wenn man/frau sich in dieser Heilenergie (oder von mir aus auch: “im Glauben“) befindet, einem nichts mehr passieren kann.
Natürlich gibt es den (physischen) Tod nach wie vor. Das schleckt keine Geiss weg. Und natürlich bleibt auch Leid und Not. Doch deren Sieg(e) und Stachel, die einen immer wieder so stark verunsichern und piesaken können, haben keine Kraft und Macht mehr. Und das ist es doch, worum es geht.

Darum bleibe ich auch bei meinem “Nein“. Endgültig.

Doctors at Rush University Medical Center have a gut feeling that the bacteria found in the intestines may be linked to breast cancer.

That is why gastroenterologists at Rush University Medical Center are charting the presence of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa found within the gut and are exploring how microbial imbalances may impact diseases like breast cancer.

The human body contains billions of microorganisms, and microbial cells found in the human gut are estimated to outnumber human cells by ten-to-one in healthy adults.  However, little is known about the ways in which these minute life forms influence health and disease. 

“Similar to what has been done with human DNA, we want to map out the composition of these microorganisms from their DNA and analyze how they correlate to diseases and changes within the immune system,” said Dr. Ece Mutlu, gastroenterologist at Rush and principal investigator of the microbiota and breast cancer study.  “If we are able to find the microbes responsible for particular diseases, it may increase the likelihood of developing new diagnostic tests and treatments for diseases like breast cancer.”

Researchers will be using a technology for genomic sequencing called Multitag Pyrosequencing (MTPS) that allows them to examine, count and barcode hundreds of thousands of microorganisms per day within samples taken from various ecological systems including the human body.  Because of this new technology for genomic sequencing, researchers will be able to identify 50,000 or 60,000 microbes per sample.

Rush is currently recruiting study participants who are female, 30 years of age or older, and newly diagnosed with breast cancer before any treatment has begun.  Clinical data from the participant’s medical records will be taken.  Before a patient receives any cancer-related therapy, biopsies of the colon and stool specimens will be taken.

Somedays, I’m so grateful I feel it in my lower gut–a deep shooting pain that almost keeps me doubled over in my desk chair all day. Instead, I get up and stretch, reaching towards later days when thanks are implied in our mere existence. I am unable to fathom those who don’t take time out of each day to express this gut-wrenching feeling, as I cannot imagine being without it. Call it masochism, call it overindulgence in life’s emotional goods, call it self-love.

Whatever it is, it’s imminent. Whatever it is, I don’t feel it any more this week than I do any other time frame: like the week where I find out everything is going to be okay, or even the week where I realize it’s not. Thankfulness is equalized across time zones, weeks, months, lifetimes. At least for me it is. That’s how it is in my gut, even if it’s not apparent in my actions or words.

There’s a girl at my college (well two actually, but one worse than the other) who wears tops that are too small for her so you can see her enormous belly, and trousers that are too tight so you can see her massive love-handles and gargantuan arse hanging out. It just begs the question – “Do people really want to see that?” I know I don’t. Whatever you do on a weekend; get pissed, eat loads of food and not do any exercise afterwards; is fine with me. But the least you can do is dress properly so nobody else can see what a fucking state you are on Monday morning.
I guess that’s the kind of society we live in now though: Fat, ugly chavs with nothing better to do than flaunt their bodies to people regardless of whether they like them or not. They’re everywhere; shopping centres, supermarkets, cinemas, back alleys, parks, my basement tied to a chair…

Every time I see them I feel like shoving a sweater over their head, tossing them into some dungarees and then craming a board ruler down their throat.

Oh, and to boot, she has the attitude (and face) of a beached whale.

„Management“ heißt der kommunikationswirksame Verkaufsschlager der westlichen Industrieländer. Hinter dem Zeitgeist-Konzept verbirgt sich ein uralter, der westlichen Tradition entsprungener Begriff, der sich ursprünglich auf Haus, Familie, Gerätschaften und Haushaltsführung bezog.
Von Ökonomen aufbereitet und mit einer wissenschaftlich-technischen Aura versehen, wurde „Management“ zur Wirtschaftsdoktrin, zu einem Propagandainstrument der neuen Globalisierung eines Marktes ohne Grenzen.

Genau wie die großen religiösen und politischen Imperien ist auch das weltweite Management ein Teil der Geschichte. Wer den Versuch wagt, die Entwicklung der Gesellschaft über einen sehr langen Zeitraum nach dem Muster der Erdgeschichte zu analysieren, wird auf die „geologischen“ Schichten einer Zeitarchitektur stoßen, die den Ist-Zustand der Zivilisationen in sich tragen. Traditionen überlagern sich wie Sedimente, auf deren Oberfläche jeweils eine neue Epoche entsteht, die dessen harrt, was unausweichlich auf den Menschen zukommt.

Jede Form von Modernität ruht daher gewissermaßen auf einer verschütteten Vergangenheit, die sich der Mensch in Mythen oder wissenschaftlichen Deutungen zu erklären versucht. Doch um sich mit der Endlichkeit abzufinden, sie gewissermaßen zu bezähmen, bedarf eine menschliche Gesellschaft der Fähigkeit, die Schattenlinie zu erkennen, die jene Momente markiert, an denen Unumkehrbares geschieht. So gesehen, ist die lange Geschichte einer Zivilisation ein einziges, aus Schriftsedimenten bestehendes Textkompositum, durchzogen von eben dieser Schattenlinie, die eine nie endende Inszenierung der Zeit gestattet, eine Untiefe der Erinnerung, die ihr Spiel mit der Wirklichkeit treibt und dem Unsagbaren huldigt.

Der Film versteht sich als eine Reflexion über den globalisierenden Westen. Er will an der Oberfläche der Sedimentschicht unserer Epoche den Moment entschlüsseln, der eine neue Qualität gegenüber den Brüchen und Übergängen der Vergangenheit darstellt: Wir leben heute in einer Ideenwüste leben, die aus dem Irrglauben geboren wurde, dass die Menschheit – unter der Wirkung der wissenschaftlich-technischen Wirtschaftsallmacht – zu einer dem Glück geweihten und von allen Zwängen befreiten „Post-Menschheit“ mutiert.

Laut diesem neuen Glauben befinden sich die desaktivierten, zu bloßer Folklore verkommenden Zivilisationen auf dem Wege der Selbstvernichtung. Damit erübrigen sich die Analyse des Textkompositums der Gesellschaft und die Suche nach der Schattenlinie, auch ist es nicht mehr nötig, eine Gesellschaft mit ihren unfassbaren Geheimnissen, ihrer Verletzlichkeit begreifen und ihr schöpferisches Potenzial und ihren Umgang mit den ihr eigenen Todestrieben erkennen zu wollen.

Die Arbeitsthese dieses filmischen Essays ist ein Satz, den Jean Paulhan in einer Abhandlung über die kubistische Malerei verwendete: „Entfernt die Bäume, die mir den Blick auf den Wald verstellen.“ Diese Metapher aus dem Pflanzenreich habe ich mir zum Grundsatz gemacht, denn unserer Zeit fehlt es an Erklärungen; ein Defizit, das durch die Fragmentierung und Abschottung des Wissens weiter akzentuiert wird. Doch genau diese Erstarrung hindert uns daran, eine Welt zu begreifen, die aus den Fugen gerät, aber nach wie vor in tief wurzelnden, noch immer wirksamen Traditionen verankert ist. Manche dieser Traditionen sind im Untergang begriffen, andere aber trotzen der Gleichschaltung durch die westlichen Systeme.
In dieser Partie mit unsicherem Ausgang ist das weltweite Management – vom Westen als reines Instrument der Vereinheitlichung mittels wissenschaftlich begründeten Verwaltens konzipiert – ein neuer Einsatz/Trumpf.

Wie bereits frühere Filme des Autors stellt auch „Dominium Mundi – Die Weltherrschaft des Managements“ von Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftswissenschaftlern, Biologen und anderen zementierte Gewissheiten infrage. Die Methode des Films besteht nicht darin, sein Sujet – die Funktionsweise einer Zivilisation – zu zerpflücken und zu zerstückeln. Vielmehr seziert er es in der Manier des Kubismus: aus allen Perspektiven, von innen und von außen.

Grundansatz und Anliegen des Films ist es, die Fähigkeit zum Widerstand und die Fortdauer des „Materials Mensch“ sowie die immer währenden Widersprüche, die gewaltigen industriellen Umbrüche und die poetischen Rückzugsmöglichkeiten aufzuzeigen, die ein Film greifbar machen kann, wenn er mit der Gründlichkeit einer literarischen Erzählung vorgeht. Formal handelt es sich bei dem Film also nicht um ein Lehrstück, sondern um die Enthüllung miteinander verquickter Fragestellungen, die aus einem ganz einfachen Grunde undurchsichtig und schwer zu umreißen sind: Denn was der Westen vom Westen nicht wahrnimmt, kann auch in unsere Analysen nicht einfließen.

Verdauungsgedanken zum derzeitigen Wildwuchs im Bereich neuer Trend – Studien.

Heute wurde das “Frau Hofer Innstitut für Rechtschreibung und internationales Management” eröffnet… Ein Scherz, der vielleicht bald Realität werden könnte. Studium um Studium wird neu erfunden und auf den “Markt” der bildungshungrigen Studenten geworfen.

Es braut sich ein bildungspolitisches Unwetter über Österreich zusammen und private (und leider immer wieder auch öffentliche) Bildungseinrichtungen haben nichts besseres zu tun, als ihr Angebot “vernünftig” zu erweitern (wobei meist an bestehende Studienrichtungen einfach ein “-Informatik” angehängt oder ein “International-” vorangestellt wird) anstatt das Geld sinnvoll in bestehende Studienrichtungen anzulegen und die Ausbildungsqualität in diesen zu steigern.

Thomas Pliscjke: Kalte Krieger

Nach “Die Zwerge von Amboss” und “Die Ordenskrieger von Goldberg” gibt es nun einen weiteren Roman des Hamburgers Thomas Plischke im Piper-Verlag: “Kalte Krieger”.

The angst of decision making can, at times, be overwhelming. Where should I study? What should my major be? What kind of career do I want and what track am I on? Should I marry, and if so, who? Pop Tarts or Toaster Strudel? Recently, the multimedia online magazine, FLYP, highlighted a piece on decision making and the human brain entitled, “Make Up Your Mind.” The basic premise of the piece is based on a study by the University of Rochester asserting that the brain is hardwired to make the best decision possible and that decisions made at the subconscious or “gut” level are often more reliable than decisions made with significant deliberation. Participants in the study were asked to observe complicated phenomena, then with little time to evaluate their observations, make a decision and give a conclusion. The studies suggested that more optimal decisions were made with the information at hand with less deliberation. The article then extrapolates that larger decisions such as which house or car to buy, or who you should marry would better be made with less deliberation and more at a gut level…

Really?

That’s interesting because with little deliberation, my gut level response to this assertion is that it’s bunk.

To be sure, as the piece mentions, we make countless reliable subconscious decisions throughout the course of our day. They are nearly automatic functions such as opening the correct cupboard to get out the appropriate bowl for our Fruity Pebbles. But can that really be extrapolated into larger, course of life affecting decisions? (At this point all you chaos theorists can just relax about the universal significance of every action) I think the conclusions of these studies and this piece draw out a couple of questions.

First, what is the purpose of deliberation? The studies cited suggest that deliberation is the process whereby data is evaluated and acted upon. It is suggested that all relevant data is gathered subconsciously then evaluated and computed subconsciously by the brain for the optimal response. It is then implied that our deliberation only takes into account conscious observations, leaving out data that should be considered. However, within the study is the claim that our brains subconsciously make the optimal decision with “the information at hand”. So perhaps deliberation should allow for additional insights to inform our initial observations. In which case deliberation is paramount to making a decision that is not just optimal at the moment, with the information at hand, but is most beneficial for the long term.

Second, how is “optimal” evaluated? In controlled, measureable clinical studies, “optimal” must be quantifiable, and variables must be restricted. All gatherable information must be gatherable at the time of the study so that a rubric of “optimal” may be possible. But isn’t “optimal” a determination largely based on a person’s presuppositions and worldview, regardless of the accuracy of those presuppositions against reality? “Optimal” then becomes an exclusively individual evaluation that is determined and restricted by the subject’s own brain based only on the information it has gathered in its own time, place and interpretation of experiences and has little to no clinical objectivity whereby a rubric could be constructed and measure could be made.

Additionally, any clinical research inherently has a difficulty taking into consideration spiritual realities that cannot be quantified in a lab. The Apostle Paul cautions the Ephesian believers not to live the way they did before their faith in Christ, following “deceitful desires.” Another presupposition of this study is that our subconscious observations and interpretations are accurate to reality and not swayed by our own spiritual condition. When our spiritual condition is considered, not only is deliberation not obstructive to “optimal” decision making, but it is imperative. Each of us must take time to consider the veracity of our observations and interpretations thereof. I believe this is why the same Paul implores the Roman believers to renew their minds so as to test and approve – determine as “optimal” – God’s will and not simply our brain’s mechanical functions operating under the influence of deceitful desires.

So what is a Biblical response to this? I think it’s to take all of these things into account. There are ways in which we ought to put a little more stock into our initial processing of information and ability to make reliable snap decisions. However, when considering large scale decisions of life and future, prayerful deliberation in a faith community is imperative. We must be patient and willing to prayerfully mull over the information at hand, seeking spiritual wisdom to determine the actual reliability of our observation and interpretation and not disregard our ability to deceive ourselves simply to indulge desires. We must be willing to subject the information at hand to other and Biblical information in order to compile as extensive database as possible from which to decide what is truly “optimal.” We must also be willing and subject our processing to others who will participate in the process with us, showing us our blind spots and deceptions, adding wisdom and alternate perspectives. The book of Proverbs alone is replete with admonition to this end. I think the whole of ancient Hebrew wisdom literature and Apostolic instruction would defy any other understanding of wise decision making.
