Bilindiği üzre Ubuntu bütün versiyonlarında karizma kod adlar kullanır. Gutsy Gibbon, Hardy Heron, Jaunty Jackalope falan.

I tend to minimise the instances when I have to change of Linux version on my computer (a Macbook Pro Santa Rosa), for this always is a traumatic event with potential consequences on my work, and therefore I had postponed leaving Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) in a typical procrastinating attitude, i.e. till something stopped working! This happened yesterday with a failed attempt at upgrading R and I thus moved to Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron), using the upgrade option rather than re-installing the whole thing from scratch. The only manual steps were to change xorg.conf to accomodate the touchpad and to install madwif to get access to the wireless—the most frustrating part was finding a valid address! (Upgrading Ubuntu means that each intermediate version needs to be installed before moving to the next.) Now that everything works nicely (including suspend and hibernate, and my earlier heating problem seems to be resolved as well!), I am wondering whether or not I should move to the next version of Kubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex, terrible tee-shirt!) or even to the most recent Kubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope, terrible name: jaundiced jackal, jovial jabiru, jocular jellyfish, or jittery jaguar would have sounded way better! The next animal in the list of releases is a koala, although karmic would hardly have been my adjective of choice)… As an aside about this future release, an interesting announcement is that Ubuntu 9.10 would support cloud computing.

http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.10-eol

Ubuntu 7.10 reaches end-of-life on April 18, 2009

Ubuntu announced the release of 7.10 almost 18 months ago, on October 18, 2007. As with the earlier releases, Ubuntu committed to ongoing security and critical fixes for a period of 18 months. The support period is now nearing its end and Ubuntu 7.10 will reach end of life on Saturday, April 18, 2008. At that time, Ubuntu Security Notices will no longer include information or updated packages for Ubuntu 7.10.

GNOME Do

Instalación GNOME DO

The Warrior Rabbit is our talisman as we move into a year where we can reasonably expect Ubuntu to ship on several million devices, to consumers who can reasonably expect the software experience to be comparable to those of the traditional big OSV’s – Microsoft and Apple. The bar is set very high, and we have been given the opportunity to leap over it. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to shine, and we want to make sure that the very best thinking across the whole open source ecosystem is reflected in Ubuntu, because many people will judge free software as a whole by what we do.

Y el nombre de Ubuntu essss??????

Life and the world is full of choices, some that cannot be avoided and some that can be. Choices mak

Life and the world is full of choices, some that cannot be avoided and some that can be. Choices make us what we are and what we can have on our laptops. Hold on I am not going to write something philosophical about life and choices rather I am planning to put up something more useful. Something about my experiences with various Linux operating systems on my SONY VAIO VGN-CR120E.

First Love – Ubuntu 7.04:

The machine is a VAIO CR series and has lot of OEM specific softwares and firmware (that is a guess though). It had come with Windows Vista Home Premium installed by the manufacturer. I had the chance to work on UNIX earlier but never with Linux until to be specific July 2007. I had installed Ubuntu 7.04 then and it had loads of issues syncing with the machine. They would not work in peace. The resolution of VGN-CR120E was 1280 X 800 and Ubuntu 7.04 would put up only a 800 X 600 screen, it was annoying. The volume control would not work. LAN was good but when it came to wireless it was more than a night mare. After hours of browsing through forums, blogs and help sites nothing could be done about finding a way to make the wireless work. Every time I had to use wireless I had to boot back into Vista. But I must really appreciate Ubuntu on its speed, it was leagues ahead and scores very high when compared to Windows. Power management was again a problem with battery draining out within 2 hours and lots of heat coming out while in Vista it would last upto 3.5 hours to 4 hours.

Gutsy Gibbon does the Funky Chicken:

First love can never be forgotten. Though the second can be better . Ubuntu 7.10 or the Gutsy Gibbon released in October 2007 had fixed the issues with the screen resolution and the VAIO was able to put up a bright 1280 X 800 screen across. I was taken aback when I realized that wireless was working fine with 7.10. It was a great relief for me as most of the time I prefer working on wireless than on LAN. More mobility probably. Volume control was doing good and there seemed to be no problems. The only place where Windows would score more would be the UI, with Windows having more refined UI and Ubuntu comparatively needs a load of improvement. Overall I was very much satisfied with the Gibbon as it impressed with its Funky Chicken moves.

KDE 4.0ed:

If there was anything close to coming as competition to the UI of Windows I think the first would be Mac which is leagues ahead and next would be the KDE environment with good graphics. It was July and Ubuntu 8.04 release would be two months old. I wanted something different this time, I chose Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 4.0. This was the new version of KDE after KDE 3. Though I never used KDE before, I liked the looks of Kubuntu 8.04. There was no problem with the wireless, just completed the installation and rebooted the system and there you go with wireless all configured and ready for use. It was never so easy it was as if it knew what to do all by itself. There were no resolution problems too. Kudos for Kubuntu 8.04 on this. But there were some down sides though, audio would stop working and the system had to be rebooted for it to resume audio functionality. The KDE would crash often and throw up windows stating KDE has crashed. I felt KDE 4 was bit unrefined. Overall Kubuntu 8.04 scored a good first impression in my books.

The Gecko:

One of my friends would always want me to install OpenSUSE on my system as the second OS. I thought he was sarcastic and wanted to experiment with my system. I was wrong. When I saw the OpenSUSE 11.0 installation interface I was mesmerised by it looks. Well a beauty would always lack brains, that was my conception, again which was proved wrong. May be my conception was correct in, well…you know the other case I guess. openSUSUE had a host of user friendly stuff. The partitioning utility in the installation was advanced than other versions of Linux I had used. The DVD comes along with a lot of softwares that could be installed along with the OS itself, I chose to install Qt and Eclipse along with various other stuff that seemed to be interesting. More interestingly the DVD gave me the option of installing either of the GNOME, KDE 3 or KDE 4 version of OpenSUSE on my system. I selected the KDE 3 option which was the mature and stable version amongst the two KDE versions. The installation took around 35 minutes to one hour, not sure precisely though, the longest for any Linux installation I had done. Once done I had the boot screen appear with that green background in style and I chose to log into OpenSUSE 11.0 and lo and behold there it was so beautiful and so appealing to the eye. A masterpiece of UI among free Linux distros. But all this was not without a cost. The memory usage was around more than a GB on my system with a 2GB RAM. But I would not bet big on memory when it comes to UI. The toughest part was configuring the wireless. After swimming through oceans of forums, blogs and help sites I could not find a way to bring up the WiFi. Finally I had to quit.

Overall OpenSUSE was the Helen I could not resist falling in love with for all its great KDE desktop. On the wireless side it scores a bad zero on ten, ten being the best on the scale. Overall I was able to see the colors of the Gecko.

Hardy Heron:

After the eventful romance with OpenSUSE I had to break up with the Gecko with a heavy heart and make place for the Heron on my 10GB Linux partition. Ubuntu is one of the best distros I had come across and would always look forward for the next release hoping to see something better and my hopes were never laid down. Ubuntu Hardy Heron or Ubuntu 8.04 is the latest version of Ubuntu from Canonical. The first time I installed, the wireless was not working. Even after trying out some fixes and changing a few settings I was not able to put up the wireless and I was dissapointed.

Ubuntu 8.04 - Hardy Heron

I tried out connecting to the net on LAN and noticed that it was working fine but I felt handicapped with no wireless. I decided to reinstall Heron and went ahead with it. This time the wireless got automatically configured and I was able to browse right away though I was not able to figure what went wrong with the first installation. The installation was quick and fast. Later I customized Ubuntu with new themes and new set of icons. I was feeling good. I have not seen a downside with this installaion till now except when I wanted to connect to a broadband connection. May be I have to refer some help for this. On the memory part it was using up only 400 MB out of the 2 GB RAM on my system, definitely scores a bonus 10 on that one.

These were my experiences with various LINUX distros I tried to install on my VGN-CR120E. Each one unique to its own credit. Only thing that always runs at the back of my mind is that I have not tried Fedora even once, the next probably should be it.

I would sign off now and return back with my next blog which would be most probably – ‘The Glowing Butt’ if nothing more interesting comes up the way. Till then b-bye.

This will be my first posting about Ubuntu Linux, the OS that I use on three of my four PCs at home.

This will be my first posting about Ubuntu Linux, the OS that I use on three of my four PCs at home.

I have been an Ubuntu user for just over a year now. I started with Feisty Fawn, and after upgrading once Gutsy Gibbon came out, I decided I never wanted to go through that pain again. That was, until I discovered that you could move your /home folder and all of its contents to another hard drive. I was thrilled. This in of it self is actually the easy part. Let’s assume it is going on to its very own hard drive. We’ll call this drive sdb1. First mount the drive (I’ll skip all those steps and assume you already know how to do that. If you don’t, try here or google it.

sudo cp -r /home /mount/newdrive

Next, go and check to make sure all your files and directories have copied to the new drive. DON’T Assume everything worked no problem. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from Ubuntu, its that you can’t assume ANYTHING.

Next, we’re going to move the current /home directory to a backup folder just in case.

sudo mkdir /old_home
sudo cp -r /home /old_home

Once your satisfied that you’re ready you can delete the old /home folder and recreate it.

rm -rf /home
mkdir /home

Next we want to map the /home onto the new drive we do this in the fstab file. We will want to add something onto the end.

First

sudo pico /etc/fstab (Yes, I use pico, because I think it sounds cute… you can use whatever editor you want)

Then add this:

/dev/sdb1 /home ext3 relatime 0 2

Save and exit. We can then test to make sure this has worked by typing:

sudo mount /home

Then go to your home directory and see if you can list your files. If you can, give it a try and reboot.

That should work. I hope I didn’t leave out anything.

Next, how do we re-install linux, (or whatever) and then remap to that /home folder upon a new installation??

This step, wasn’t so easy for me. And I’ve done it three times now, and finally decided to write it down. Thanks to the official IRC Support channel on irc.freenode.org in the #ubuntu chat room, I once again, have a working computer.

First – I have tested this with Hardy Heron, I have no reason to believe it shouldn’t work on Gutsy Gibbon, or Feisty Fawn, but I haven’t tested it, so if anyone knows this works on this, please let me know, and I’ll mention it in this little guide.

During the installation phase it will ask you to partition your drives. Choose MANUAL.

Then, choose the hard drive you want to have your OS and programs installed to. I chose SDA1 (cause that was the first hard drive) and I chose the mount point of / and the file system of ext3

Then, I went to the second hard drive, and chose the mount point of /home and file system of ext3.

Then, I made sure I had enough swap space, and proceeded to install ubuntu.

After I was done however, I discovered that I could not login. This was because something went wonky with the ownerships. My friends in the #ubuntu room (especially unop) helped to get me going again.

Obviously we’re going to use ME as the case study.

First type ALT F2 to get to the console, login… then

Is malocite your username?

echo $user

Yes, it was. Am I part of the right groups?

groups; id

Yes I was. Next Is this actually the right home directory?

grep -i $USER /etc/passwd

It was. Now, we’re going to set the ownership of the directory.

chown malocite:malocite /home/malocite; chomod -Rv 750 /home/malocite

And that should do her! After that, I rebooted and was able to login to ubuntu no problem, and all of my home files were exactly as they were before. The other great thing, was all my bookmarks, email, background prefs, settings, etc were also all exactly as they were before.

I hope this was helpful, please let me know, and PLEASE, if you see anything thats wrong, let me know so I can fix it. This was my first attempt at such a guide, and I am sure it needs work

Still bored and don’t really feel like doing anything taxing to my already diminishing stamina

Still bored and don’t really feel like doing anything taxing to my already diminishing stamina, I decided to take on IBM’s new Office suite, the Lotus Symphony.

Lotus Notes Splashscreen

The name Lotus Symphony was first used by Lotus for it’s Integrated Software, released for DOS. It’s regarded as the follow-on of Lotus previous spreadsheet application, the Lotus 1-2-3. The current Lotus Symphony is based on OpenOffice 1.1.4. It has 3 modules, a word processor, a spreadsheet, and a presentation program. The version 1 was released on May 30th, 2008

I was planning to download the Windows version. Visiting the download page, I saw there are installer for Windows and Linux. Currently, only Red Hat and Suse are officially supported. I went ahead and download the Linux Installer.

Installing was easy. Open a terminal, and type:

$sudo ./IBM_Lotus_Symphony_linux.bin

Then I was greeted by “blank” wizard window.

A quick search on google tell me that, due to a bug, the installer won’t work when a composite window manager is present. So I changed my window manager to metacity:

$metacity –replace

Or, if Compiz Fusion Icon is availabe, right-clicked on it, go to “select window manager” and select metacity.

And restart the installer again. This time it works. And refused to install because I don’t have the necessary 500 MB-ish free space on /opt. A quick df -k show me that I still have about 1 GB on “/”. Oh well.. I decided to create a partition for “/opt” by resizing my fat32 data partition. Fired up gparted, and about 30 minuts later I have an “/opt” partition with 2.5GB of free space. Restart the installation.

Finally it works! The installation wizard works just like any Windows application installer, Keep pressing “next” until the “finish” button appear. The installer created one shortcut to the suite on Applications > Office > IBM Lotus Symphony. I clicked the menu and… nothing happened. Another trip to google land told me that, since I used root account (well, sudo) to install, the .lotus directory on my home/user belonged to root account. So I had to changed that.

$cd /home/ikhsan
$sudo chown -R ikhsan:ikhsan .lotus

Re-clicked on the launcher. It works!

Choose your desti.. err Office applications...

Tabbed brow.. err office suit..

Final thought. Well, if installing an office suit with a wizard requires me to open a terminal twice, IBM still has some homework to do. But then again my Ubuntu version is not officially supported.

Like the title says, I want to install 5 Linux distributions on my USB drive. It is a Western Digita

Like the title says, I want to install 5 Linux distributions on my USB drive. It is a Western Digital Scorpio drive with 80GB of space. I thought it was broken and unusable until I plugged it in recently. Seems it was the pc that wasn’t reading it right after all. Now that I have a new power supply unit in this old box, everything seems peachy. I was using the drive as a back up but I already have 3 hard drives and only 2 are currently plugged in. I ran out of IDE connectors. Did I mention it’s old? :p

I have my drives set up to work independently as I sometimes take them out and test them on other pc’s. I don’t need all of them to be hooked up just to boot up one drive or OS. I just invoke the BIOS Boot Menu using F11 during POST and pick the one I want. Simple and easy for me.

I used my GParted Live CD to make the partitions the way they are now. See image below. Shrunk my NTFS I use as a windows back up sometimes. Next up was 2 Gigs of swap then an extended 60GB partition for my /home and 5 partitions for the Linux distributions I want to try. Looks nice and organized and most importantly – it works fine.

I got the torrent from LinuxMint.com and got some rest while waiting for it to finish. Burned it at the lowest possible speed using the simple CD writer in Linux Ubuntu 8.04, my primary distribution. I had some issues booting up the Live CD. I got an “(initramfs)” prompt instead of a regular desktop. Using the Compatibility Mode, I found out that it was some error with it not detecting the floppy and SCSI devices. I used the Live CD troubleshooting guide provided by nice people in the Mint Forums. Pressed F6 during splash, pressed tab, deleted “quiet splash–” and entered “all_generic_ide”. That worked and let me into the Live environment. I liked what I saw, was curious and proceeded.

The installation was smooth. My first boot was met with the famous Grub Error 17 and 18. The reason being how the BIOS and the Live CD arranged the drives. In the Live CD, the usb drive was third and my BIOS read it as the first drive. The solution was to edit the menu.lst and change all references to (hd2,4) to (hd0,4), which is where my Mint is.

Tried again and here I am posting the results. Four more distributions to go. I’ve narrowed down my choices based on release date, number of packages and most important is the community or support. I did not include Linux Ubuntu since I’m already using that and it has its own hard drive in my pc. The list goes:

ArchLinux – 10/07/2007 with 15,000 packages

Debian – 04/08/2007 with 26,000 packages

Fedora – 05/13/2008 with 8,000 packages

Mandriva – 04/09/2008 with 16,000 packages

Sabayon – 09/07/2007 with 12,000 packages

Sidux – 04/12/2008 with 22,950 packages

[Simply]MEPIS – 12/23/2007 with 20,000 packages

*data is based on http://en.wikipedia.org

I wanted the distribution to be recent, within the last year or 2 years, so I wouldn’t be learning something that’s at the end of its life cycle. I wanted as much packages as possible because… just because. I’m still a beginner and still have a lot to learn. Now I have not looked into the community or support sites for these distributions yet. Well, I went into Debian once but for after reading some threads, I felt unwelcome because of my choice of OS – Ubuntu. I will give it another go and keep an open mind.

That’s about it for today. The rest is yet to be determined. Hopefully, I’ll get more information in a few days and start installing a 2nd OS on my USB drive. Until then…

Change of plans. Instead of a using only Ubuntu, I’ve decided to add other Linux flavors. I

Change of plans. Instead of a using only Ubuntu, I’ve decided to add other Linux flavors. I’m currently downloading Linux Mint 5 Elyssa. I still have space for more Linux distributions in my 80GB Western Digital Scorpio drive. I like the Mint philosophy about ease of use. Maybe as I progress and learn more, I’ll look into non-Debian based distributions. Aside from usability, my biggest issue will be community support. Mint has the same positive and helpful community that I like in Ubuntu. I’ve only been to their parent’s forum once and it felt kinda hostile. I was disappointed since it came highly recommended by my fellow Ubuntu users. But I’ll give it another look. Like everything else in life – gotta learn the roots.

I have an NTFS partition in my WD Scorpio that I’ve already backed up into my Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron installation. I’m experiencing a lil sentimentality and hesitation in wiping it off the drive. There’s still plenty of space though. I can shrink the NTFS and use the rest for swap, /home and an extended partition to house the distributions I would try.

I have another concern. These distributions usually have their own bootloader. Although I don’t really use Grub that much as I use my hard drives independently by choosing which one to boot in the BIOS Boot Menu, that won’t be possible in this planned drive. I guess I can pick only the ones that use Grub but I’m not sure how much variety that would give me. I’ll have to look into that in the days that come. For now, looks like my partitions are set. Will try Mint first on my USB drive and go from there. Good luck to me.
