Oh yeah baby, the hockey season is on and my beloved wonderful team the Montreal Canadians edged out

Oh yeah baby, the hockey season is on and my beloved wonderful team the Montreal Canadians edged out the Buffalo Sabres in OT by a score of 2-1. For the second game of the hockey season, les habitants de montréal took the game and two points in OT. Carey Price continues to be outstanding and excellent in his goaltending net. The game last night was quite a chippy rough physical game.

This article is written and owned by: Arnelle Durocher

In the first period Buffalo owned the habs. However in the second and third period Les habitants owned and dominated the Sabres. They threw the Sabres in confusion when they came flying out, skating, and one upped any physical combat that the Sabres handed them. My team is looking good this year with the new young players and the trades that occured over the course of the summer.

In fact the line of Gomez, Cammalleri and Gionta whom produced the game winning OT goal last night is an impressive line. Whenever they are on the ice action occurs. Gomez in fact reminds me in many ways of some of the Montreal players of old. He is small, but he can take anything physical, he checks and is not fearful of receiving a check, he is not afraid of getting in the corners and fighting for the puck. If someone invites him into fisticuffs he will not back down even though the opposing player is looming over him in size.

He reminds me of players of old like Guy Carbonneau, Mats Naslund, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer type of players. In fact he also reminded me of the old Nordiques pain in the ass player to hate Dale Hunter. This line of Gomez, Cammalleri and Gionta also reminded me of the old line of Mario Tremblay, Doug Risebrough and Pierre Bouchard. That line when they first arrived in the NHL and played for Montreal used to get on the ice and there was always action and physical combat with them.

Buffalo scored a power play goal in the first period. The Habs answered the Sabres in the second and took the win and two points in OT.

The announcers had some difficulty with Montreal’s second period goal, however the refs were on par, the goal was in the net befor the net was off its mooring. This video shows the replay on the puck in the net before the net was pushed off its mooring. The goal rightfully counted.

Alex Kovalev, As A Montréal Canadien Perhaps Dany Heatley should thank Ottawa Senators newcomer Alex

Alex Kovalev, As A Montréal Canadien

Perhaps Dany Heatley should thank Ottawa Senators newcomer Alex Kovalev for taking some of the attention away from him.

Kovalev, who has a long history of making controversial statements, has stirred up new issues in Ottawa with choice comments about his passion for the Montréal Canadiens, the team he was with before signing with the Senators.

Addressing the media at his annual charity golf tournament in Montreal on Thursday, Kovalev said his first choice was to return to the Canadiens, rather than coming to Ottawa, where he signed a two-year, $ 10-million U.S. contract, and that, in a perfect world, he would finish his career playing at the Bell Centre.

“I was disappointed ; I thought for sure I’d be staying here,” Kovalev said, when asked about not being re-signed by Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey. “I couldn’t really understand what had just happened. In the end, I took it from a business point of view. You had a chance to stay here, and you didn’t, so you just go and do the job somewhere else, but maybe somewhere in the future I’ll be back again, and get the same support.

“I’ve been back to Montreal four or five times in the last three weeks. Every time you see a fan on the street, [they say] they’re really disappointed. That’s why I say, maybe after two years I’ll be back again. It definitely would be nice to retire here, but it’s not for me to talk about Montréal — I’m part of another organization. I’m going to go there and do the best I can, and we’ll see what happens.”

When the Canadiens didn’t show Kovalev money or security, he says the Senators were one of the few teams willing to offer him more than a one-year contract.

“We couldn’t get any better offer from anybody else,” he said. “Ottawa was kind of the last choice for us. If we didn’t sign, we were going to end up some place else for one year.”

The comments fall far short of a ringing endorsement for his new organization, particularly with training camp only two weeks away and the Senators also dealing with the ongoing Dany Heatley trade request saga.

Senators general manager Bryan Murray, however, downplayed the comments from Kovalev, who left North America Friday for a three-day orientation camp with the Russian Olympic team.

“I believe what Alex expressed at his charity golf tournament in Montréal reflected his sincere appreciation of what the Canadiens did for him, his wife and sons,” Murray said in a statement. “Once Alex and his family get to know Ottawa and our great fans, he may want to retire in our region, as many NHLers have done and intend to do.

“I wish Alex all the best at Russia’s Olympic team camp over the next few days and look forward to seeing him in Ottawa in a Senators jersey.”

Kovalev did acknowledge his appreciation for the warm welcome he received from the Senators when he was introduced here in July.

“It’s definitely important for any player to feel that welcome to the city. Everybody knows how uncomfortable a situation it is when you play in a city for a long time and then have to go to a different city.”

Kovalev also touched on the Heatley saga, suggesting the waters might be rough for both Heatley and the fans if he returns to the team.

“It’s definitely not going to be easy in the first couple of months, and maybe the fans aren’t going to be on his side, but eventually, if he plays well and the team plays well…if he stays, it would be great. I’m sure the players will back him up a little bit because he has always been important to the club. You definitely have to make it comfortable for him to come back.”

Kovalev has been in the middle of several controversies before. He openly questioned former Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau for his decision-making process late in a game, questioning why the coach didn’t call a timeout to get the proper players on the ice.

A Russian newspaper also quoted Kovalev as saying Carbonneau favoured French-Canadian players over Russian players. However, Kovalev denied he had said that.

Whenever I read prospect analyses and biographies I tend to cringe. It’s especially unbearable when the player in question is a forward.

I find it ignorant to think that the only value a player has is his ability to put the puck in the net.

Every time a player is drafted, the first thing that’s examined is his point production. Sure, critics pass judgment on his two-way play and his face-off acumen, if we’re talking about a centre.

But what if that player’s best asset is his defensive skills? Are we just going to assume that this young chap is not valuable?

Defense is a very important aspect in the game of hockey, particularly in today’s NHL where power plays are a dominate factor.

I would love to draft and develop a player like New Jersey’s John Madden. When he started playing he wasn’t a great scorer, but he could skate like the wind and shadow any player in the league.

Many people would argue that you can find tons of veterans that can play that role. I disagree because I’m not talking about role players. Sure, you can find veterans who can stick to the system and play dependable hockey.

I’m talking about young players that can step into the league and shut down opposing scorers like nobody’s business.

And that’s their skill, that’s it. They eventually learn to score about 25 goals and add 25 assists, but their value is their defense.

Players like John Madden, Mike Peca, Jere Lehtinen, Kris Draper, Esa Tikkanen, Jan Erixon, Guy Carbonneau, and Bob Gainey don’t grow on trees.

They had an intangible skill that’s just as important as producing hundred point seasons.

I feel like screaming when I hear that certain forwards are great two-way checkers, but they’re not ready because their scoring ability is poor.

If they’re responsible two-way players then let them play. Maybe that’s the most you’ll ever get out of them.

Don’t just let these players disappear into obscurity like many misunderstood prospects.

Bob Gainey Of all the things I was sure of in this world, Bob Gainey as a very bad General Manager w

Bob Gainey

Of all the things I was sure of in this world, Bob Gainey as a very bad General Manager was at the top of them.

What did he do that was so good ? Pass on Jeff Carter ? Trade Cristobal Huet for a 2nd round draft pick ? Trade troubled Mike Ribeiro, a great forward in spite of everything that has been said, for a defenceman, Janne Niinimaa, whose prime was over ?

One of the only good things he had done was trade José Théodore for the young sensation, David Aebischer. We all knew something bad would happen to Aebischer and it did. Roland Melanson took care of him…making him one of the worst goalies in the NHL.

Last season, he had the chance to take the Montreal Canadiens to the top by adding superstar Marian Hossa. Reportedly, the Atlanta Thrashers wanted someone like Chris Higgins in return. Gainey had the unbelievable chance of getting rid of that cancer but he didn’t do it. The Canadiens didn’t last very long in the Playoffs.

Laura Gainey

Terrible things happened to Mr. Gainey in the last few years, things that have absolutely no connection to the world of hockey. On December 8, 2006, Gainey’s 25 year-old daughter Laura was swept overboard while sailing in the North Atlantic. Gainey temporarily passed his GM duties on to assistant manager Pierre Gauthier while awaiting word on efforts to find Laura. She was sailing on the barque Picton Castle, a sail-training ship based out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada, destined for Grenada. On December 11, it was announced that the search for Laura’s body had been halted. Gainey returned to the Montreal Canadiens in early January.

I have great sympathy for Bob Gainey. What happened to this man, who was known to be a great husband and a great father, is absolutely terrible. No good man deserves that. Whether you hate him or you love him as a GM, you have to respect this great Hall Of Famer.

The first good thing he did was get rid of Guy Carbonneau, who

Guy Carbonneau

was a good guy, but a very bad coach who switched his lines like it was a video game each and every game. People were very sad, and mad, at Gainey for getting rid of the coach but I knew Gainey had taken the best decision he could. I believe it was nothing personal, just business.

Whatever he did wrong in the past as a GM, that was almost all forgotten in the summer of 2009. That summer, he proved to me that he could be a very good GM.

What he did was great.

Scott Gomez

First of all, I never liked Christopher Higgins. He is known to be a drunk and a drug user. For me, he was a cancer. Bob finally understood that and traded him, along with some underachievers, to the New York Rangers for Scott Gomez and a bunch of young guys.

That was surprising ! I never saw it coming. Gainey, in my own mind, would never trade Higgins. Most of all, I never thought Gainey would do something really good as a GM.

I told myself : “Well, at least he got someone great this year.”

I thought it was over but no, he had other plans ! Gainey went on and signed great players like Mike Cammalleri, Jaroslav Spacek, Hal Gill, Travis Moen, Paul Mara and Brian Gionta.

I couldn’t believe my own eyes.

He tried to make Mike Komisarek his priority but obviously,

Mike Komisarek

Komisarek wanted out of Montreal. He signed with their arch enemies, the Toronto Maple Leafs for too much money in my opinion.

Komisarek wasn’t a great defenceman. He was big, he could hit but often, he seemed out of his league when compared to guys like Lidstrom, Chara or Kaberle. He also had a lot of trouble, like Sheldon Souray, spinning from one side to the other.

Gainey got Hal Gill to replace him which is a very good choice. At $ 2.25 M, Gill was the logical choice to replace Komisarek. He had just won the Stanley Cup so he is a proven defenseman who can hit and take hits. The only real problem with him is his speed.

The same thing goes for Paul Mara, who can score when it is needed as his 63 career goals show.

With the departure of the veteran Mathieu Schneider, Gainey needed someone who could score on the blue line. He got Jaroslav Spacek, who has scored 69 goals in his career and who has been Captain for the Sabres in the past.

Brian Gionta’s amazing speed is certainly something that will help the Montreal

Brian Gionta

Canadiens for years to come. Although small in stature, he is known for his tenacious play. In 2006, he scored 48 goals for the Devils.

Mike Cammalleri is a proven player, who can score over 30 goals a season. He was an amazing player in Los Angeles and he scored 39 goals last season with the Calgary Flames. He is definitely deserving of a spot on the top line.

Travis Moen is the reason, and the proof, that Georges Laraque should not come back to the club. Moen has almost 500 penalty minutes and is a really tough guy who isn’t overpaid at all while Laraque can barely play without injuring himself.

The only disappointing thing is that Alex Kovalev will not be back as he signed a 2-year deal with the Ottawa Senators. Who can blame him ? The way he has been treated in Montreal is no way to treat a guy you want as Captain.

Saku Koivu

The very best thing, however, that Gainey did is not re-sign that sorry excuse for a Captain, Saku Koivu. While Koivu was a good player, he never deserved to be Captain. He was no Richard or Béliveau. Koivu was never there to defend anyone and hid when trouble happened.

Now, he is signed to a one-year contract with his friend Teemu Selanne in Anaheim. Good for him and great for the Canadiens.

With a brand new coach in Jacques Martin, who was a great force behind the bench of the Ottawa Senators in the past, what will the next season bring to the fans ?

Whatever it brings, if it is bad, I do not blame Gainey this time.

“What was Gainey’s rush?!?!” “Boring, defensive hockey comes to the Montreal

“What was Gainey’s rush?!?!”

“Boring, defensive hockey comes to the Montreal Canadiens!!!”

“The guy has as much personality as a wet noodle.”

…and so it goes. Just some of the reaction to this week’s hiring of Jacques Martin by the Montreal Canadiens as their new head coach. Personally, I think Jacques Martin is just what the doctor ordered for this ailing franchise. But apparently, I may be in the minority here.

For starters, let’s look at the three above-mentioned criticisms.

What was Gainey’s rush?

I’ll tell you what was Gainey’s rush. Gainey was in a rush to put a head coach into place with some time to spare leading up to the NHL Entry Draft, that will be held June 26-27, at the Bell Centre. Gainey was in a rush to finally add a sense of stability to a franchise that had been drifting without a full-time head coach since Guy Carbonneau was fired on March 9, and a franchise further set adrift with word that team’s ownership is about to change hands. Finally, a sense of direction from the Habs as they now move into high gear to assess the 10 potential unrestricted free agents they have on this team, and they players they will need to find to replace the UFA’s who don’t come back. I’d say Gainey had several good reasons to be in a rush, wouldn’t you??

Boring, defensive hockey comes to Montreal.

And this would be a bad thing?!?!? The fact that Jacques Martin had a large measure of success as a defensive-minded coach, largely with the Ottawa Senators, is something I’m thrilled to see on his C.V. The Montreal Canadiens were a terrible team last season when they weren’t playing with the puck. The fact that they weren’t much better when they DID have possession of the puck, is another story. Defense wins championships. Okay, Jacques Martin hasn’t won any championships in his lengthy tenure as an NHL head coach, but that’s because he didn’t have a goaltender in Ottawa who could win a playoff game. Martin’s system turned a mediocre Ottawa team into a very good Ottawa team. That works for me. Hopefully, it’ll work with the Montreal Canadiens.

Jacques Martin’s personality, or lack of same.

Apparently this is an issue with some fans. Hmmm. Let me see now. The last coach of the Montreal Canadiens, Guy Carbonneau, had a pretty fiery temperment. Carbonneau was an emotional coach who wore his heart on his sleeve. He spoke his mind and took no prisoners. And where did it land him? On the unemployment line. Jacques Martin isn’t a politician. He isn’t a stand-up comic (although a few laughs were sorely needed in what was a disastrous Centennial Season.) He’s a head coach. A professional head coach. A head coach with experience. Lots of it. A head coach who finally brings to this organization a body of NHL knowledge that the Canadiens have been lacking since the days of Jacques Demers.

Jacques Martin was even criticized by some over the suit he wore to the Bell Centre when the Canadiens introduced him as the 29th head coach in franchise history. THE COLOUR OF HIS SUIT, FOR GOODNESS SAKES!!!! LIKE THAT’S GONNA MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO HIS QUALITIES AS A HEAD COACH!!!!!!

For the record. It was a brown with faint pinstripes.

Listen to me. Jacques Martin doesn’t have to impress us with his wit or his charm. Or his wardrobe. He has to take the players he has in that dressing room and get the most out of them. End of story.

Actually, the story is just beginning for Jacques Martin, who may have come out of left field in all of this. But he is the right man for the job.

One of the most successful teams in all pro-sports. An amazing list of incredible hockey players. An amazing legacy. In their 100th season, what do produce? A big ol’ F- of a team. The non-Habs fan in me is happy they suck, but I’d much rather have my team put them down because its no fun watching a team implode. The 2008-09 version of the Canadiens deserved to impode because:

Guy Carbonneau was a wimp. I’m sorry but the coach does matter quite a bit. When the coach and the star players aren’t on speaking terms that’s gonna screw up the team chemistry for sure. Tone from the top matters, A LOT.

The fans are even worse than Leaf fans. What I mean is they are even more fickle, extreme and chant soccer chants. I love the passion, but the stupidity that accompanies the passion is sometimes too much.

Over relied on a very young goaltender (Carey Price). Goaltenders generally take a while to really develop. Very very few are elite level at Price’s age and he was overused this season.

I’m not a Habs fan in general. Most of the time they aren’t a team I care about one way or another. Even as a casual observer of the Canadiens, I could smell the stench of failure. Getting swept in the first round of the playoffs is a better send off for this disaster of a team. One thing to keep in mind, there are 11 unrestricted free agents on the team, so hopefully they can remake this team so it contains less suck. The ball is in your court Mr. Gainey, don’t screw it up.

Qu’on me sorte ça de Montréal ça price, pardons ça presse.
