On December 4th, 1909, J. Ambrose O’Brien and T.C. Hare formed a partnership that would change history in hockey and in Canada. The two businessmen came together to found one of the greatest franchises in sports history – the Montreal Canadiens. The cost to have the team admitted to the brand new National Hockey Association was $6,000. A century later, the team is valued at more than $300 million. The team’s history, however, is priceless to millions of hockey fans who have had the opportunity to watch “Les Habitants” over the years. Names like Morenz, Richard, Plante, Lafleur, and Roy have dazzled hockey fans for 100 years. There has been as much action off the ice as on it in this franchises riveting history. More than 700 players have had the good fortune to wear “le bleu, blanc, et rouge.” Many have become champions. Some have changed the game through innovation. Others have transcended legendary status through their dedication, determination, and sheer power on the ice.

3,000 people witnessed history as the Canadiens played their first game on January 5, 1910. The crowd gathered at the Jubilee Rink had no idea of the history that would follow, when the team from Montreal (wearing blue back then), led by Jack Laviolette, beat the Cobalt Silver Kings 7-6 in a thrilling overtime win. The win was a fitting start for a team that would dominate the game for so long afterwards, but the first season was not a great success. The team was sold after a disappointing first season, in which they only won 2 games out of 12, and their colors were changed to red.

In 1914, a precursor to the greatest rivalry in hockey would have it’s first championship installment, as the Canadiens met the Toronto Blueshirts for the Stanley Cup. In a two-game, total goals series, Montreal won game 1 2-0, before losing 6-0 in game 2 to lose the series. The Blueshirts would later be at the middle of a controversy that would cause the NHA to fold, and the NHL to take over. Toronto would eventually be represented by the Maple Leafs. The Habs and Leafs have since met in the playoffs 15 times, with Montreal winning 8 of those series to Toronto’s 7.

The Canadiens would get another chance at glory in 1916, when they finished in first place in the NHA standings. They would meet the Portland Rosebuds, who finished first in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, for the Stanley Cup. Led by player/coach Newsy Lalonde, who won the NHA’s scoring race that year, the Canadiens defeated the Rosebuds in 5 games. It was the first time that a 5-game Stanley Cup final had gone the distance. Montreal lost game 1 before rebounding to win games 2 and 3. Portland forced a decisive final game by winning game 4. In the final game of the series, the Rosebuds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but could not hold on. “Goldie” Prodgers became the first Montreal Canadien to score a Stanley Cup winning goal, beginning one of the greatest winning traditions in sports.

The Canadiens once again won the NHA championship in 1917, but lost the Cup to the Seattle Metropolitans, the first ever American team to win the Cup. After this season, the NHA owners disbanded the league, and set up the NHL. The first NHL game was played on December 19, 1917, in Montreal, but it was not the Canadiens who played. The Montreal Wanderers defeated the Toronto Arenas, 10-9. The Canadiens played later that same day, and beat the Ottawa Senators 7-4, bolstered by 5 goals from “Phantom” Joe Malone, who scored 44 goals in 20 games that year. In goal for the Habs that day was Georges Vezina, the first great NHL goaltender. Vezina tended the net for Montreal for 366 consecutive games, before leaving a game in 1925 with an illness. He would die of tuberculosis months later.

In 1924, a new face would emerge as a superstar for the Canadiens, as they claimed their second Stanley Cup, and first as an NHL franchise. The Habs defeated the Vancouver Millionaires of the PCHA to win the Cup, with Billy Boucher scoring the winners in both games. They would then defend their championship against the Calgary Tigers. A rookie phenomenon named Howie Morenz would lead Montreal in the Calgary series, scoring hat tricks in both games. Morenz would go on to dominate the NHL for his entire career, becoming the first NHL superstar.

Known as “the Babe Ruth of hockey,” the “Stratford Streak,” and “the Canadian Comet,” Morenz was the first player to win the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player to his team, in 1928. He would remain a vital part of the Canadiens’ team forever. On January 28, 1937, Morenz rushed the puck up ice when he was met by Earl Siebert of the Chicago Blackhawks. Morenz was knocked off his feet and he crashed heavily into the boards, breaking his leg. Legend has it that the sound of his leg snapping could be heard throughout the Montreal Forum. On his way to the hospital, Morenz said. “I’m through. This is the finish.” He died of a coronary embolism only weeks later, but those who knew him said he died of a broken heart, due to the end of his hockey career. Morenz’s legend, however lived on, as thousands of fans filed past his casket, which was laid out at centre ice at the Montreal Forum. It has been said that the “Ghost of Howie Morenz” haunted the Forum from that day forward, helping the Canadiens win. In fact, no other team won the Stanley Cup at the Forum until 52 years later, when the Calgary Flames defeated Montreal in game 6 of the finals.

A new hero would emerge for the Canadiens’ faithful in 1944. Having failed to win the Cup since 1931, the Habs were due for some heroics, and it came in the form of a local boy named Maurice Richard. Fighting blatant discrimination from the English aristocracy of hockey his entire career, “The Rocket” made himself a star by scoring a hat trick in game 2 of the 1944 finals, and 5 goals overall in the series, helping Montreal regain the Stanley Cup. Over the next 15 years, Richard would become the greatest player in Canadiens’ history, scoring a total of 544 goals and 965 points, while amassing 1285 penalty minutes. He was the first player to score 50 goals in a season, scoring number 50 in the 50th and final game of the 1945 season. He was also the first player to score 500 career goals. Always playing with style and skill, The Rocket retired after scoring the 1960 Stanley Cup winning goal, sealing his 8th Cup victory. The intensity displayed by The Rocket every night was contagious, affecting both his teammates and the fans. He was at the centre of the most infamous incident in Montreal Canadiens, and possibly, hockey history. On March 13, 1955, Richard got into a fight with Hal Laycoe of the Boston Bruins. A brawl erupted, and in the melee, Richard dropped linesman, Cliff Thompson with a powerful fist to the face. NHL commissioner, Clarence Campbell suspended Richard for the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs. At the next Canadiens’ game, Campbell was pelted with eggs until a tear gas bomb was thrown in his direction. The game was cancelled, and the Detroit Red Wings won via forfeit. As fans spilled onto St. Catharine’s Street, they showed their displeasure by looting and vandalizing shops to the tune of $500,000. The Richard Riot was a showing by the people of Montreal that they would stand by their hero, who had done so much for them. 41 years later, upon the closing of the Montreal Forum, The Rocket received a rousing 16-minute standing ovation, moving the man with the devil in his eyes to tears.

The last of 5 straight Cups came the same year that Jacques Plante changed the face of hockey forever. After being hit in the face by a Andy Bathgate slapshot against the New York Rangers, Plante returned to the ice with a broken nose, and a flimsy leather mask. Canadiens coach Toe Blake was against the idea, thinking the mask obstructed Plante’s view, but as the Habs continued winning games, he wavered. Plante would win his 5th straight Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top goalie.

The 1960 Stanley Cup was the last of 5 straight. It was the end of the Richard era, which made the Canadiens the most dominant franchise in the game. They were not done there, however. Their next Cup would come in 1965, with Lorne “Gump” Worsley backstopping the team to 2 shutouts in the finals. The first ever Conn Smythe Trophy, for playoff MVP, was awarded to Jean Beliveau, who would win a total of 10 Cups with Montreal. Beliveau is second on the all-time list to Maurice Richard’s younger brother, Henri, “the Pocket Rocket,” who won 11 NHL championships, all with the Canadiens.

The 1970s began with a new coach and a new goalie, but the winning ways continued. In 1971, Al MacNeil, the new coach, started a rookie goalie named Ken Dryden in the playoffs. Dryden had only played 6 games in the NHL, but MacNeil had faith in the kid. That faith paid off, as Dryden led the Canadiens to their 17th Stanley Cup championship, winning the Conn Smythe award.

The following season was the beginning of another new era, with the addition of Scotty Bowman as head coach, and the emergence of Guy Lafleur as a superstar and fan favorite. Winning 5 more Cups in the ’70s with Bowman at the helm and Lafleur’s golden hair flying down the wing, the Habs dominated the expansion era of the NHL, the same way they had dominated during pre-expansion.

New dynasties emerged in the 1980s in the form of the New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, but the Montreal Canadiens would also have their say. After four straight Stanley Cups by the Islanders opened the decade, the Oilers won two in a row. Then, in 1986, Montreal made it back to the top, defeating the Calgary Flames in 5 games. The Habs were led, once again, by a rookie goaltender. Patrick Roy, who would become one of the greatest goalies in hockey history, became the youngest player to win the Conn Smythe award, at only 20 years old.

The 24th Stanley Cup in team history came in 1993, as Roy once again captured the Conn Smythe, and the Canadiens defeated Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in 5 games. The Habs won a record 10 overtime games during the playoffs that year, and the finals were immortalized by Marty Mcsorley’s illegal stick penalty late in game 2, which Montreal tied on the power play and won in OT. It also marked the 9th consecutive decade in which the team had won the Cup.

As the Montreal Canadiens take to the ice tonight, in the 100th Anniversary game, and every other night, history is not only being celebrated, but it is being made. Each goal, each win adds to the legend of this team, which has grown from an agreement between two businessmen to the most storied franchise in this or any sport.

So be it…

Faux.

Congrats on setting a new world record...i guess. According to yesterday’s NY Post, Sean Avery

According to yesterday’s NY Post, Sean Avery was spotted down in the Meat Packing District in NYC over the weekend, huffing lung darts with gal pal actress Catherine Keener. A good friend of mine who lives in NYC and runs a Hockey & Entainment blog called, The Daily Sauce, saw Avery back on April 4th after the Rangers disappointing 1-0 road loss to the Bruins, standing outside a New York City bar with his shirt and tie still on, a bluetooth in his ear and cigarette in mouth. Now, this article in the Post got me thinking about how we are starting to see a cigarette smoking trend on the Loge, so I decided to dig a little deeper for all you loyal readers and see if this was a common theme among NHL players. So kick back, light up a stogie, or two…or three, as I uncover the TRUTH.

I have to start by thanking Uniwatchblog.com for some nice commentary on the relationship between sports and cigarettes, and although the article is geared more towards other pro sports, most notably baseball, there is some great insight (and some great picture evidence of some notable sports figures lighting one up). But the Loge is all about hockey, so I had to dig even deeper to find what Loge readers want. So without further commentary, I will jump right into my findings.

The most notable hockey name that I continued to stumble across was Hall of Famer Guy “The Flower” Lafleur, who apparently was quite the smoker in his day; despite scoring over 500 goals and finishing his career averaging 1.2 PPG. According to his biography on Biographybase.com, Lafleur was good for 2-packs a day; which I think only make his career numbers even more astonishing! Let me put it this way: Lafleur was good for 40 cigarettes a day, and when you take into account the fact that he obviously slept for 6-8 hours a day, he was smoking 2-3 cigs every hour…he had to be lighting up during a game otherwise he would be losing valuable smoking time. While I came across Lafleur’s name quite often in my searches, one name that I really had to dig for was the great Mario Lemiuex. I have heard stories about him smoking cigs, but I needed to find out the truth for myself (and you the readers). While he was not as heavy a smoker as Lafleur, in the early part of his career #66 would huff down about a half pack per day. Apparently, just before the 1987 Canada Cup, when Lemiuex led all scorers with 11 goals (including the famous game winner in the championship game), many critics questioned his dedication (obviously b/c of his smoking habit). However, the very next year he won the Hart and the Art Ross trophies…dethroning the Great One from his seven year run as the leading point getter and forever immortilizing him in hockey history. Another former NHL stud who has been linked to smoking cigarettes is former Chicago Blackhawk Dennis Savard, who was known for smoking cigarettes in the locker room. Check out this article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette during the 1983 playoffs, Kids Are In Charge of Semifinal, profiling the Oilers vs. Hawks series and comparing Wayne “The Kid” Gretzky to Denis “The Dead End Kid” Savard (top of second column makes note of Savard’s smoking habits). Apparently cigarettes only helped the Savardian Spin-o-rama! I think the best stories I came across were about the always controvesial Al “Empty Net Goals Are For Faggots” Iafrate, from articles in the New York Times and Sports Illustrated, circa 1993. Both articles paint Iafrate as a Harley Davidson riding, heavy metal music loving, cigarette smoking “Wild Thing.”

His preferred mode of transportation is a Harley Davidson motorcycle, his main music is metal-based, and he often fires up a post-game cigarette with the same propane torch he uses to sculpt his hockey sticks.

I don’t know about you guys (and ladies), but this certainly solidifies Iafrate’s roster spot on my “Best of NHL Badasses” list. Imagine a young Peter Bondra preparing a new stick for the start of the second period, and Al Iafrate bullying the torch from him to light up a smoke. PRICELESS! Now I know these four guys are no longer in the NHL, and undoubtedly played during a different era of sports, but don’t worry, my research didn’t stop there.

Besides Sean Avery and Carey Price, I happened to come up with a few current NHL players who like to dablein the lung darts. The best piece of evidence I was able to come up with was this gem of a picture of Miikka Kiprusoff and Dion Phaneuf lighting up smokes at what is apparantly a strip club. Can you say classy? (I don’t know who to give credit to for this photo because I found it everywhere, so just know that it is not Loge19’s. )

I did it all for the nookie!

Now let me point out a few things in this picture. They are definitely at a strip club because there is a “I love tits” bumber sticker on the back door, and if you look closely there is a wall of lockers for the strippers to store their ’street clothes’ in. But I’m not here to call them out for being at a strip club, so enough about that. Notcie Kiprusoff lighting his cigarette with another cigarette…a sure sign of a chain smoker. I got nothing for Phaneuf, but obviously he does like ’sloppy seconds’ if he’s hanging out in the back room of a strip club. Another goalie that has/had a reputation for smoking lung darts is Stanley Cup champion Nikolai Khabibulin. Apparently in Phoenix he was an out-of-shape, slob of an athelete, and smoked a lot of cigarettes. Here is what John Tortorella had to say about him when he was acquired by the Lightening in a TSN article about seven years ago:

I was with Nik in Phoenix a number of years ago where Nik was out of shape, smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee, the whole nine yards…

Now I’m not sure if he still enjoys smoking cigarettes, but my guess is that he does because his coach for the past two seasons in Chicago (before getting fired this year) was Denis Savard, and I’m sure they had pre game butts outside the players’ entrance. Moving on, Sergei Subov appears to be a renowned smoker, and apparently smokes unfiltered Russian Cigarettes…can you say BAD ASS! The guy has two Stanley Cups and plays 25+ minutes a game when he’s healthy. One of the best lines I found in regards to Zubov, was from a European scout who was comparing Ottawa’s first round pick in the 2008 draft, Erik Karlsson, to Sergei Zubov; “He’s Zubov, without the cigarettes.” HAHAHAHAHA.

I’m sure there are plenty more players that smoke cigarettes in the NHL today, but obviously they keep things a little more hush-hush than they did 20 years ago. A few names that I stumbled across but didn’t research quite as much were: Dany Heatley, Mats Sundin, and Chad Larose of the Carlina Hurricanes. I actually had the pleasure of indulging in a few cigs with Chad Larose during his rookie season in the USHL with the Siuox Falls Stampede, and he definitely loved every inhale of them (this was in 1999, before the time of digital cameras, but I’ll look back in the photo vault to see if I can find some picture eveidence of this…he was not the only one on the team smoking).

In closing, there are obviously some very big names in the NHL that have been, and are, linked to cigarette smoking. I’m not sure about the legitmacey of this statistic, but on a Yahoo! Message Board one person posted the following in 2008:

317 NHL players on their insurance form, claim to have smoked at least 1 cigarette in the last 12 months. Or roughly 35% of the league.

If this is true, that is a staggering number, and makes you wonder: if they are checking a box that says they have smoked “one cigarette in the past 12 months,” they have obviously smoked way more than one. If any of you readers have any insight into this statistic, please send it our way.

As the NHL season draws to a close, we will enter into a hockey withdrawal state….and to stop

As the NHL season draws to a close, we will enter into a hockey withdrawal state….and to stop this from happening you will need to read some good hockey books during the off-season.

Ken Dryden’s The Game has been hailed as the best hockey book ever written and included in Sports Illustrated’s list of the top 100 best sports books of all time. Dryden was one of my idols growing up (along with Guy Lafleur, the Flower Power) so this book has a special place in my heart.

Dryden played goalie for the Montreal Canadiens, a true and longtime hockey dynasty. During Dryden’s eight seasons with the Canadiens in the 1970s, the team won the Stanley Cup six times. Dryden does not fit the stereotype of a hockey player. He is one of hockey’s most intelligent and insightful commentators. He “retired” for one season due to a contract dispute and decided to finish requirements for a law degree. He is currently a member of the Canadian Parliament. The Game is both thoughtful and articulate and I highly recommend reading this book. You can pick up a copy at either Amazon or your local book store (ie. B and N, Chapters).

The next hockey book I recommend is different: Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux’s Swimming Pool? Follow the true exploits of the most celebrated of sport’s trophies beyond the champagne toasts and all-star embraces. Why is the Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux’s Swimming Pool is a wild, globe-trotting romp filled with zany, surprising, and often touching accounts of what really happens once hockey’s greatest quest has been conquered and the celebration begins-off the ice.

What did the sport’s greatest players do when, king for a day, they spent an eventful twenty-four hours with the Stanley Cup? The prestigious trophy has held everything from beer to infants, and has been carted from Moscow’s Red Square to Bob’s Big Boy. Why is The Stanley Cup in Mario Lemieux’s Swimming Pool? includes:

Stories of raw emotion and personal triumph-a visit to MIKE KEANE’S one-hundred-year-old grandmother’s nursing home, and a presentation by JOE NIEUWENDYK to his blind professor during a reception at Cornell University

Raucous anecdotes of high comedy-nights abandoned on street corners, visits to strip clubs, golf course hi-jinks, and a trip to the bottom of MARIO LEMIEUX’S pool

Unbelievable twenty-four-hour world travel to Sweden, Russia, and beyond, mysterious tales of the Stanley Cup ghost, and reflections from hockey’s greatest of the greats -HOWE, GRETZKY, ESPOSITO, and HULL

Would you drink from the Stanley Cup if you knew where it had been? This is one of the funniest hockey book I have ever read. Being a hockey fan, I ate these stories up like no tomorrow. You don’t need to be a crazy fan like myself to enjoy the stories though. The Stanley Cup is definately the most well traveled hunk of silver around and its story is still being written.

I will post some more good hockey books shortly. I am still impatiently waiting for McFarlane Toys to make a Ken Dryden figure in his classic stance. They did release a Guy Lafleur figure which you can buy online at: cmdstore.com. We have tons of other hockey figures that you can check on the site.

The recent criticism over Alexander Ovechkin’s 50 goal celebration has led me to notice that the NHL

The recent criticism over Alexander Ovechkin’s 50 goal celebration has led me to notice that the NHL is losing its individualism.

I’m not just talking about player celebrations and antics. We could all do without Sean Avery’s immaturity and selfish behaviour.

It’s the equipment that players use that has me wondering if the NHL is becoming a private school with standard clothing and accessories.

Wayne Gretzky was known for his 1970’s JOFA helmet and long cuff gloves. Mark Messier sported the unique Winn Well/Cooper helmet his whole career when everyone else stopped wearing them long ago.

Guy Lafleur and Craig MacTavish didn’t even wear helmets and this transcended into an era where most players wore head gear. Conversely, Leonard “Red” Kelly was forced to wear a helmet in a time when they weren’t worn.

Today’s players switch equipment like dirty underwear and leftovers from a generation ago are inconceivable. The majority of players look identical like they just stepped off a factory assembly line.

I can only think of a few players today, compared to many more just 10 or 15 years ago, that maintain a certain style in equipment throughout their career.

Teemu Selanne is probably the only player in the NHL that still uses the round JOFA helmet that was introduced in the early 1990’s. Jason Blake still uses the older long and flat visor along with Tackla hockey pants. Martin Broduer still uses small pads even if the brand has changed and Chris Odgood continues to use a helmet with cage as a mask.

Their differences may be small but they give these players a personality and they are quickly recognizable.

Similarly, accessories add unique personalities for players like Kelly Hrudey’s headband used to absorb sweat or mustaches grown by players like Lanny McDonald.

I’m glad to note that players like Ian White and George Parros have reintroduced today’s generation of hockey fans to the mustache. We need more unique appearances and personalities to breakthrough.

The other part of the problem is equipment manufacturers who have been monopolized like many businesses in our present world. Gone are the day’s where players had a large variety of brands to choose. It seems like every manufacturer is owned by Reebok.

JOFA and CCM are properties of Reebok which is it self owned by ADDIDAS which uses it’s subsidiaries to infiltrate the game of hockey rather than using its own brand.

Nike bought Bauer in 1995 but recently decided to fuse both brands into one unified product. TPS who bought Louisville had recently decided to stop using the Louisville name altogether.

There was a period in the 1980’s and 1990’s when we could see a variety of manufacturers being represented on the ice. Some of the brands that were used were KOHO, JOFA, Canadian, Christian, Louisville, Titan, Montreal, Brians, Brown, Vaughn, Itech, Sher-wood, Cooper, Bauer, Easton, Nike, Victoriaville, Tackla, DR, Rawlings, Winn Well, Northland, Heaton, Hespeler, and TPS.

These companies were mostly independent and they created different hockey products and some competed with similar items. One thing that you could count on is that the competition allowed for diverse styles. Especially with helmet manufacturers like CCM, JOFA, and Cooper who had different and distinct shapes.

Today everything is owned by just a few companies and even if they’re not they create very similar looking products. Equipment is standardized and that causes a loss of individuality despite players’ lack of loyalty to any specific piece of equipment.

Many brands disappeared for various reasons, including the change to composite from wood sticks, and new companies have emerged to compete with Reebok, Nike, and Easton.

Eagle, Warrior, Mission, Salming are some of those brands but their products also have similar designs and marketing plans.

Goaltending equipment has also received a major redesign in the past couple of years. Pads, gloves, and blockers have lost a lot of colour and have reverted to mostly white.

Brands also have similar designs for goalie equipment and it looks like the majority of goaltenders are using the same equipment minus the difference in the small amount of colour.

What’s the reason for all this assimilation and why have goalies gone back to mostly white equipment? Could it be that they see the black puck better? I’m not sure but I know that it’s depleting the eccentricity in the NHL.

There’s little doubt that the days of equipment overlapping generations is over so keep your Denis Potvin and Lanny McDonald “bubble” helmets in the attic.

Monopolized hockey equipment companies that produce similar designs are part of the problem but veteran players have also ditched the old for the new.

They choose to assimilate rather than stand out as the veterans that have played over two decades.
