This year is the 25th anniversary of GWAR, and what a fantastic place to begin these reviews. I’d be hard-pressed to choose a better exemplar of the spot where regular tastes diverge from my own than the output of these alien G-hadists. I have many fond memories of the blood-spewing live shows and ridiculous home video releases. In a box somewhere I have an unwashed, Gwar-stained t-shirt that Mrs. Slim desperately seeks to destroy.

However, the task at hand is the improbable eleventh studio album, Lust in Space, and I have the pleasure of reporting: It’s One of the Good Ones. GWAR has always veered between the posts of slick metal production (the incomparable Scumdogs of the Universe) and self-indulgent garage punk (the incomprehensible We Kill Everything). This one benefits from nice drums-up-front recording from the band’s own Cory Smoot and the return of Casey Orr to reclaim the role of Beefcake the Mighty. The sonic experiments are kept to a merciful minimum and the result is solid metallic congress, free of excessive mythology (“Where is Zog?” does make a nice call-back to the early days).

In a nutshell: If you liked War Party and wished it didn’t have that silly French song or the long boring one, this is kind of that. 7.5 out of 10

Quote Unquote of Mr. Bungle

Today, I wanted to write something which I meant to do on Halloween, but hadn’t gotten around

Today, I wanted to write something which I meant to do on Halloween, but hadn’t gotten around to finding time for it until now. I’d like to do a brief rundown (not that rundown) of my favourite costumed bands or singers. For the purposes of my list, this is allowed to include bands who dress uniformly as well. Besides, the french word for “suit” is “costume” anyways. So it’s practically the same thing.

There’s something about bands who dress in costume or who dress alike that somehow makes the band better. They seem to be more in tune with each other, more in sync. However, there is a fine line here between genuine skilled bands who have a hook, and shitty bands who have a gimmick. I’d like to think I have fairly discerning tastes, and the groups I bring you pull from the former category. All the same, I’d like to present to you what I consider to be a decent primer into the world of (good) gimmicky costume rock.

The level of commitment to the costume or uniform varies from the extreme (KISS) to the modest (Ed Sullivan-era Beatles). Sometimes it is something as simple as all members in the group adopting similar styles of dress or titles, like with the Ramones. Perhaps I am a sucker from comradery, or constancy, but I rather like it when bands put in the little bit of extra effort in this regard. Rather than all looking like lumberjacks with their plaid flannels and their chuck taylors, they look like a more cohesive unit, one band, with one soul. One God, one vision. If you didn’t catch that as a Queen reference, shame on you.

Anyways, on with the listing.

GWAR

No proper guide to costumed bands can be commenced with any other band than “the most dangerous band in the world” – GWAR. Born from space, with a penchant for destruction, spewing blood, and pus dripping from orifices, GWAR can be a disgusting thing. However, they take the cheese factor to incredibly high levels, turn the camp knob to eleven, and generally seem to be having a blast while doing…. whatever it is that they’re doing. There’s not much else to say but you either love them, or hate them. The trick though, is to always remember it’s all in jest, and they’re over the top just because they can be.

I’m not ashamed to call myself a fan of GWAR, but I must admit that being sprayed with fake blood at a concert isn’t my idea of a good time, so I’ll probably enjoy a proper GWAR experience. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a video of them every now and then, though!

The Aquabats

The Aquabats are one of a few bands on this list who have a had a lengthy rotating cast of monikers masked men. Like GWAR, they also have a rich backstory, something along the lines of hailing from somewhere called Aquabania, or something like that. UNIMPORTANT. What is important is that they`re great. And they’re super heroes. Also, where GWAR tries to shock you, the Aquabats do it for the kids. They don’t write songs about politics or global warming, they are just out there to have a good time, and fight evil doers. Seriously, when I saw them, some character emerged named “the money man”, but the Aquabats dispatched with him rather handily and continued to play. They’re fun, they’re silly, they have their own gang sign to throw, it’s like watching a cartoon come to life. If you’re not down with the ‘bats, then get the hell outta here.

The Phenomenauts

Another fun band with more backstory that is necessary, I think the Phenomenauts are supposed to be robots. At least one of them is. The others are spacemen? I’m not sure. All the same, they also have had a revolving-door type of lineup, which in itself is impressive because they are consistently good from album to album. More of a rockabilly band than anything else, they’re just good-tyme fun, and the space motif makes them even better.

And once, one of their songs was used for the daily “wake up song” in the International Space Station. That’s pretty awesome. That song was infinite frontier, but I like this song better:

The Planet Smashers

Now, the Planet Smashers don’t necessarily follow the same pattern as the previous bands, but despite the photo above, they do tend to wear identical bowling shirts when they play live. At least they did the last couple times I saw them. All the same, they’re French-Canadian, and they’re excellent. Just like poutine, and Guy Lafleur.

The International Noise Conspiracy

Hailing from Sweden, the International Noise Conspiracy was at one point in time the band deemed to have written the song “most harmful to freedom” or something like that. This dubious honour was noted on a live album of theirs, apparently originating from a very right-wing Swedish publication.

This band is fronted by Dennis Lyxzén, vocalist for several other great bands, most notably Refused, who I consider to have created the greatest album ever made.

Anyhow, the ‘Conspiracy tends to run one uniform for each album or tour, then retire that getup and fashion a new one. It’s kind of neat, kind of gimmicky, but the band’s music and songwriting are top-notch, so it works for them. They also are big proponents of dancing at their shows, and the music’s pacing reflects this. Here’s a favourite of mine:

The Hives

I’m not entirely sure, but I think the time of the Hives has passed. There was a few years where people seemed to be really excited about them, but that seems to have gone by the wayside at this point. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pay attention to them, because you should. They’re also Swedish, they’re snappy dressers, and quite good. To sound like a snob, I listened to the Hives before they were cool. But that’s lame.

All the same, I had hoped to find a video of their song (and the first I had heard of theirs) “the Hives Introduce the Metric System in Time”. Alas, I failed, but here’s one everyone should most likely know, if they listened to rock in the last 5 years.

The Toy Dolls

I know I’m stretching the costume / uniform angle by including the toy dolls. They don’t wear uniforms, they don’t wear costumes, but they do consistently all wear weird sunglasses. Seriously, that’s all I’ve got. But I did want an excuse to include this song, so stuff it. Unfortunately, the video quality is lacking, although the skill is certainly there.

Fun fact – Olga, the guitarist/vocalist of the Toy Dolls is apparently completely self-taught with respect to his guitar playing. This is apparent in some of his guitar lesson videos (which can be found online) where he states things like “I don’t know what chord this is, but this is what you do.” Great!

To make up for this, here’s another Toy Dolls video:

Again, this is by no means an exhaustive list, but I can’t really be bothered to write about more, and you probably by now have lost interest. Remember kids, BoringestBlog is committed to writing about something mildly interesting, and then droning on until no one is amused anymore. Tell your friends!

In case you’ve been under a rock lately, or are just utterly unfamiliar with Vanderbilt’

In case you’ve been under a rock lately, or are just utterly unfamiliar with Vanderbilt’s student radio station WRVU, there’s been a bit of a shitstorm recently regarding a new rule put in place by their governing body. In short, the board of directors for Vanderbilt Student Communications (which is a separate corporate entity from Vanderbilt) voted to cap the number of community DJs. Community DJs are ones who are not Vanderbilt students, faculty, staff, or alumni. Simply read some of the comments at the Nashville Cream post if you’re unfamiliar. I simply do not have enough knowledge of the situation to form a firm opinion, but I am pretty disgusted at how nasty some of the comments on that post were. It’s horrible that members of our local music scene resorted to name-calling and personal attacks, though I do understand where their anger comes from. Personally, the most I can opine on the matter is to say that the number limit should not be on the overall number of community DJs, but rather the number of shows/time slots given to community DJs. Also, as a former DJ at 88.3 WMTS (MTSU’s student station) which had no community DJs at all, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to limit the amount of community DJ involvement. I’ve always thought that our local music scene/community was lucky to have college radio station that allowed non Vanderbilt-affiliated people to host shows. However, given the very different student demographic and level of interest in the two stations, it’s difficult to make a comparison. But, it’s also obvious that WRVU wouldn’t be half as good as it is without the community DJs. They really add a lot to the programming, especially the diversity. But I happen to know many DJs who are current or former students and they have great taste in music, and also come out to support the local music scene, contrary to what many Cream commenters seem to think. I must digress before this post turns into a novel… the main purpose here is to make sure that you know about tonight’s WRVU benefit show at the End, featuring my new band POWERBRRRD, Vermicious K’nids, Westfolk, and Cheer Up Charlie Daniels. The show also serves as CUCD’s vinyl release show. Please do come out for the sheer sake of supporting the bands, if nothing else. Boycotting the show as some have suggested is childish and disrespectful to the bands. And honestly, the people behind the community DJ cap decision could probably care less if you boycott the benefit show. Furthermore, it will only deepen the divide that has developed between the local rock community and WRVU. So please do come out and support the bands at the very least.

And now to lighten your mood, go read Hipster Runoff’s musings about what it would be like working for Twitter. Then look at this stunningly beautiful and inspiring artwork for the new Gwar album Lust in Space. (Via Brooklyn Vegan)

Notícia do site Whiplash:

KKKKKKKKK

So last night I went to another concert. This time it was Lamb of God and Gwar. I’m not much of a metalhead anymore, but my man is so we got pre-sale tickets a few months ago. Of course, at the time, I didn’t realize I would have an 8:30 am test in Medical Terminology class, but what are ya gonna do? I ended up staying at the back with my friend Jen all night as neither of us cared about being close or wanted to be in the sea of people flipping out. It was a fun show, though! Lots of crazies around! ha ha ha ha I think tonight’s Blondie concert will be more my speed!

I DID, however, discover that they had wine on their alcohol list and I am sure I was the only one drinking it. I may have gotten a leeeeeetle bit drunk ha ha ha ha ha

After an arduous 15 plus year climb to the top of the international metal scene, LAMB OF GOD vocalis

After an arduous 15 plus year climb to the top of the international metal scene, LAMB OF GOD vocalist D. RANDALL BLYTHE reflects to TOM HERSEY about how the band went from being underground heroes to a major label success.

Lamb Of God have come a long way since their inception in the early 90s. From a band that, as Randy tells, “did all the vocals on the first album in 12 hours” to touring with Metallica and travelling the world on the strength of “pure American metal”, Lamb Of God have grown to become, undeniably, one of the biggest names in the new wave of American heavy metal. And while Randy, the band’s quick-witted, razor-tongued front man doesn’t seem like the sentimental type, we catch him off guard. During our conversation, it is discovered that the band’s slot, headlining the metal stage at Soundwave, which also coincides with the release of the band’s fifth studio album, is also Randy’s birthday, so give the dude a break for reflecting a bit.

Coming out of the strong Virginian metal scene, Lamb Of God established themselves on early recordings as a heavy metal band combining the accessible hooks of Pantera with progressive song structures and the heaviness of more extreme, underground bands. A formula that proved successful, garnering Lamb Of God’s albums both critical acclaim and a legion of dedicated fans. While many bands that started around the same time as LoG cease to be (excellent Richmond sludge band Alabama Thunderpussy one of the most recent causalities), Lamb Of God are demonstrating signs of a longevity rarely seen outside the highest echelon of the international metal elite. Randy confirms this hypothesis when discussing some of the big names to come out of the Richmond metal scene.

“In Richmond, there’s Gwar. And Gwar took us out on our first tour and they’ve been around like 25 years and they’re still doing it. So I feel like a spring chicken compared to them. Being in a band long term is not for everybody, people don’t have the stamina or maybe they’re just smart enough not to do this for 15 fucking years. But for us, that’s just the way we are. We’re still flogging away and I don’t see an end in sight right now. I could see us doing this like those bands that will never stop. Like Metallica or Slayer, but not the Rolling Stones, I’m not going to be Mick Jagger, popping around on the stage when I’m 65, there’s just no fucking way. The only person that could do that is Lemmy. But he’s not a human. He’s like an über-man. He’s an advanced creature.”

The latest product of Lamb Of God’s dedication to their craft is Wrath. Combining the speed and extremity of As The Palaces Burn and New American Gospel with the big riffs and hardcore posturing of Sacrament, the new album is powerful enough to attract a new legion of fans, while reigniting the passion of fans from albums past. While the album is stuffed with the aggression and tension expected from the five piece’s back catalogue, Randy believes that the stresses that plagued their more recent efforts (which are well documented in the case of Sacrament’s ‘making of’ DVD) wasn’t as prevalent when heading in to the studios to record Wrath.

“The recording sessions for Wrath were less stressful than the last couple of records because we had done such an extensive pre-production period. We try and learn from every recording session and we’ve gotten a little bit better at it. We’ll certainly take the lessons we learned recording this album and learn even more the next time we head into the studio.”

One of the most notable aspects of Wrath is a return to the political lyrics that the band became known for, only to ditch altogether on their last effort, Sacrament. On songs like Wrath’s stand out track Contractor (seriously, this song is like Laid To Rest good), it sounds eerily reminiscent of the band so pissed off at the state of affairs that they penned classics like As The Palaces Burn and What I’ve Become.

“Well for As The Palaces Burn we tried to step away and write a record that wouldn’t get us branded as a political band, because we don’t want to be branded as any sort of band other than just a fucking heavy metal band. But that didn’t work, Mark and I write the lyrics and we wound up writing a lot of political stuff and after Ashes we said ‘ok, we’re really not going to write a political record’ so we buckled down and ignored the politics and wrote internal stuff and Sacrament was a personal record. With…” Randy stops mid-sentence “what’s the name of our new record? shit I’m getting old… Wrath we kind of reopened the flood gates and we allowed the politics to come back through. So on this album there’s some personal stuff, some political stuff and some social commentary. It’s nice to have a broader palette to paint with.”

As our conversation turns back to the band’s upcoming Soundwave set, we reflect on Lamb Of God’s previous performances in Brisbane. The band’s amazing headlining show in a very packed, very sweaty, Arena (remembering the show as I write is making feel all gooey inside), set an incredibly high standard for Lamb Of God to match. But as Randy sees it, there’s never been a question of trying to put on a show on par with the last.

“We always have to play better than we did the last time, no matter how good it was. We’re a highly self-critical band, when we write, when we record, when we play. People will say to us after a live show ‘that was fucking awesome’ but if we messed up a tiny little piece of a song, that probably only we would notice, that pretty much ruins the show for us. We’re really anal about that. Of course the show goes on but the vibe backstage after the show is generally not good because we’re so self-critical. So we always want to do better. Both times we’ve been to Australia we’ve been plagued with equipment problems, so this time we’re bringing our own gear and we know it and we know that it’s not going to fuck up. We feel that the last two times we’ve been to Australia the shows have been amazing, the fans have been amazing but we have not been amazing. So we’re really looking forward to coming down and giving the show that the fans deserve.”

Although some fans might be jaded about Wrath being released on the day of Soundwave, thus leaving minimal time for people to become acquainted with the album’s tunes, Randy assures that it won’t be long before his band of hardened road warriors ride through town again with their own shows. “I would definitely look out for us in the year 2009. I don’t think we’re only going to Australia once this year.”

But how does Randy feel about spending his birthday on the other side of the world from his home, with a mass of Brisbane punters? “Australia’s our favourite country to tour in besides the States and it’ll be my birthday and the album will come out and it’s the first day of the tour and I’ve heard that Soundwave is awesome, so I’m fucking stoked.”

He’s created gig posters, album art, art prints, and shirt designs for bands like: GWAR, Mudhoney, The Melvins, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Venus Trap, and so much more.

Along with creating pieces for amazing bands, Kamerer also creates art for his own enjoyment, and definitely mine.

The pieces above are mandrake letterpresses. He created the piece with the focus growing out of a baby and printed it on letterpress paper, which is very thick. Because of the type of paper, he was able to create these indents on the art to add to the diversity.

One time while looking through his site, I discovered that he did all the album art for the Sounds of The Underground Tour.

I’m not here today to argue the relative strengths and weaknesses of comedy powerhouse Jack Bl

I’m not here today to argue the relative strengths and weaknesses of comedy powerhouse Jack Black. I’m only here to say “When it’s right, it’s right.” The following 10 songs would be just that for Mr. Black…Right. Jack, if you are reading, there’s an album in here and a video DVD. Call me if you would like to discuss further.

10 –> For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) … AC/DC … This is pure rock genius and this list would be incomplete without it. It’s as if the song was written for Black.

9 –> Iron Man … Black Sabbath … Seeing Black in some form of GWAR-like costume aping the iron-clad hero delivering that iconic first line would be pure poetry. An epic Norse saga of death and destruction, but poetry nonetheless.

8 –> Brass in Pocket … The Pretenders … The sexual tension of the song would give Black a LOT to work with. I would be looking for a bit more metal vibe than the original had from Jack’s cover, but I don’t think I really need to say that.

7 –> Young Turks … Rod Stewart … I want to see this. I need dancing. Fame Style. Street Magic. Breakin.’ With Black leading the way.

6 –> Rainbow in the Dark … DIO … Ronnie James Dio? Hell yes! This video will tell you all you need to know. Listen and rock. Now.

5 –> Lay It on the Line … Triumph … Realistically, “Triumph” should be all I need to say, here. This is tailor-made for Black’s razor-sharp wail and over-the-top style.

4 –> Life is Just a Fantasy … Aldo Nova … 6th grade. WCMF Rochester, NY. I think this has enough ridiculous drama to it to bring out the best in Black.

3 –> The Rainbow Connection … Kermit the Frog … The sensitive side, here. A bit of hyperbole is in order and I’m thinking a direct recreation of the scene from the Muppet Movie, frog suit and all. (As a serious aside, I do really LOVE THIS SONG and it never fails to make me tear up. What can I say?)

2 –> Cherokee … Europe … Holy CRAP, this would be hilarious. WATCH THIS GEM and imagine a Black version. Wow. Just wow.

1 –> Children of the Sun … Billy Thorpe … IF YOU ONLY LISTEN TO ONE SONG HERE, listen up. This is SO Jack Black that it pains me. JACK, PLEASE RECORD THIS SONG. Full on! Viral gold in the making, here.

Rock on!

Mediaite has noted that Fox’s late-nite show Red Eye is beating CNN’s entire primetime line-up.

Red Eye averaged 432,000 total viewers and 202,000 in the demo. Let’s deal with the demo first – CNN’s 8pmET show, hosted by Campbell Brown, averaged 191,000 in the demo. Let’s just let that one sink in – Fox News had more people in the all important A25-54 demographic watching their channel at three in the morning (east coast time) than CNN had for the show that leads off their prime time. This says as much about Fox News as it does about CNN. Wow.

In total viewers (and demo), Red Eye beat the cable news competition three hours later. All three other morning shows, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, CNN’s American Morning and HLN’s Morning Express had less viewers in September.

Megan McArdle, commenting on this notes that part of this is likely a result of the fact the entirety of its competition is infomercials.

With all do respect Megan, I must disagree. There is only one explanation for Red Eye’s success. And that is that it is the only news program that has featured GWAR frontman Oderus Urungus. And not just once. Many times.

When you have GWAR, how can you possibly lose? (Of course, a host as fun and awesome as Greg Gutfeld doesn’t hurt either)

It seems everyone discovered a winning formula with this summer’s Korn show at The Shrine Mosque: Book a big-ticket national act, set up a battle of the bands among big-drawing locals to determine the opener, apply revenue from the battle of the bands to help offset the cost of the big-ticket national act. The formula returns October 17 with another battle of the bands–this time at The Outland Ballroom, as opposed to Remmingtons Downtown–to determine the opening act for Lamb Of God when the band comes to the Shrine with Gwar and Job For A Cowboy November 7. The lineup? Glad you asked. Peep it after the break.

There are five bands in all competing for the opening slot. We’ll list them alphabetically:

Extreme Hate Frequency

Fiera

The Murlesque

Six Shots Till Dawn

Violent End

The winner, as we alluded to before, gets to play at The Shrine Mosque as the opening act for Lamb Of God, something no local act would normally be afforded the chance to do otherwise. You’ll get to decide which of these fives bands gets said chance, thanks to the ballot that comes with your paid entry to the show. The band with the most ballots cast for it at the end of the night wins.

If you don’t make a regular habit of checking out these artists websites, you should because some of them are terrific. For a good time, start with Gwar’s. And the video…wow. You can’t really ask for more than that at a concert, can you? These bands will be at the Austin Music Hall (where else, right?) at 8 pm. Tickets are $40.35 and you can buy them here.
