Before I went to see “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” I wanted to get a taste of Wes Anderson’s distinct style.  So I took a friend’s recommendation and watched “The Royal Tenenbaums,” which is this week’s “F.I.L.M.” (First-Class, Independent Little-Known Movie).  I am now officially smitten by the quirky, off-beat humor that people love about Anderson.  He has a very cultish, niche audience, but “The Royal Tenenbaums” managed to make a blip on the mainstream radar.  It made a respectable $52 million (attendance comparable to “The Final Destination”), won a Golden Globe for Gene Hackman’s performance, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.  But for a large group of moviegoers who haven’t experienced Wes Anderson, might I suggest renting this?  You’re really missing out if you haven’t.

The film follows a dysfunctional family that has fallen apart, mainly due to the large egos of the three extremely bright children.  Chas (Ben Stiller) is a successful enterpreneur by his early teens, Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a skilled playwright who is published by high school, and Ritchie (Luke Wilson) finds great success with the game of tennis.  But for different reasons, they all wind up miserable.  Surprisingly, it is their estranged father, Royal Tenebaum (Gene Hackman) who ends this unhappy spell.  With his eccentric and often manipulative ways, he often infuriates them.  But he has a certain charm that has the power to ease the pain of disappointment and fill the gap he has left in their lives with his absence.

One thing that I particularly enjoyed about “The Royal Tenenbaums” is that I could sense Wes Anderson had as much fun making this movie as I did watching it.  He ornately concocts these bizarre characters that seem so far-fetched, yet they hit home in unexpected and delightful ways.  Anderson makes his presence felt throughout the entire movie.  You can feel it in the cinematography, consisting of deliberately framed geometric shots.  You can feel it in the soundtrack, a mix of folk and rock that really sets the atmosphere for his quirky work.  You can even feel it in the font he uses for the titles.  If you were like me, questioning what could possibly make Wes Anderson so special, watch “The Royal Tenenbaums” to be silenced and completely won over.

I sometimes have these thoughts where Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck are sitting in an editing room snickering at all the footage they’ve shot around town of Phoenix’s new endeavors. His gruff Unabomber look along with his ambition in hip-hop music has to be a ploy for a project that will eventually lead to a ’surprise’ for the public… right? Well, hindsight is always 20/20 and if I’m wrong, then I will miss you Joaquin. You really should have kept your day job!

Since Phoenix transformed into a beast and went into hiding, I decided to watch Two Lovers last weekend. Phoenix portrays a man named Leonard who lives with his parents in Brooklyn. From the get-go, Leonard is troubled as he literally makes a splash in the first few minutes of the film. When good samaritans pluck him out of the water, the audience learns that he is not only troubled, but somewhat of a cad. He doesn’t even say ‘thank you’ to his saviors, but tries to walk away unnoticed. When he reaches home, his doting parents detects something is wrong, but their countenances explains that they’ve been through this before. Even his mother played by Isabella Rossellini tries to peek under his door to make sure her son is doing okay.

Although it would be easy to dismiss Leonard early on as someone who is socially awkward and in need of a few more therapy sessions, Leonard has many surprising elements about him that are revealed as the story progresses. While working for his Jewish parents’ dry cleaning business, Leonard drums on with his mundane life until one day he meets Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow) in the hallways of their apartment complex. Leonard and Michelle become fast friends and he eventually finds out she is dating a married man. However crestfallen by this news, Leonard still becomes infatuated with Michelle and clings by her side when she is in need. Michelle isn’t much of a likable character as even some would have expected, she is flaky and is driven more by her erratic emotions than rationale. But then again, so is Leonard.

Their relationship eventually becomes more convoluted as Leonard starts dating the daughter of his parents’ business associate. But that doesn’t stop Leonard from being there for Michelle when things become complicated with her married lover.

While watching this movie, I couldn’t help feeling beside myself about Leonard. There were times where you wanted to like him very much as he seemed to mesh well with those around him (he even has a great dance number!), but it also left me feeling uncomfortable because I couldn’t tell his sincerity one way or another. Phoenix and Paltrow performs well as expected in their roles. But by the end, the film left me at a loss as I didn’t see a point to this story. Yeah, people do suck. What else is knew?

Bottom Line: It’s worth a gander, but no hurry.

Hoy nos llega lo que será la próxima portada de la revista Empire, que tiene al Hombre de Hierro como principal reclamo.

Numarul din ianuarie 2010 al revistei Emipire Magazine va avea pe coperta un nou poster pentru “Iron Man 2″.

De asemenea, in interiorul revistei, fanii filmului vor gasi si alte poze de promovare pentru Iron Man.

Filmul va aparea pe marile ecrane pe 7 mai, anul viitor, iar din distributie fac parte actorii: Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Jon Favreau, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson si Scarlett Johansson.

Empire magazine is featuring Iron Man 2 as the main article in their forthcoming January issue. Today they unveiled the cover for this new issue complete with the man of iron himself. I must say it looks amazing.

The movie from director Jon Favreau sees Robert Downey Jr. back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow back as his lovely assistant Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle replace as Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James Rhodes/War Machine. There are also some new characters including Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson, Justin Hammer played by Sam Rockwell and Ivan Vanko/Whiplash played by Mickey Rourke.

It’s in cinemas from May 5th, 2010 and is sure to be one of my favourite movies of next year.

‘Can I help you out with that trash?’

I heard a voice over my shoulder and, sure enough, when I looked up it was Gwyneth Paltrow on a break from up-dating her website, GOOP.

I knew very well she was being ironic. Certainly, she seemed quite tickled by the notion of it. So I left my chore and invited her into my mouse house.

After I’d washed my hands I got some fish fingers out of the fridge. They can defrost together, I thought as I welcomed her warmly.

Gwynnie is a piece of alabaster perfection and she can do long and short hair, as she showed us in Sliding Doors. I asked for some beauty tips, which she surrendered gracefully.

Nevertheless, she roundly dismissed my offer to paint her nails, with a snort through her elegant nose.

‘Do you prefer Luke or Owen Wilson?’ I asked, referring to her roles in the Wes Anderson films.

‘Oh, I couldn’t possibly choose between them,’ she replied coyly.

‘I could,’ I revealed. ‘Owen. More chamomile tea?’

We went for a walk around Ravenscourt Park so she could get some air. She seemed to relax a little but I have to admit I was quite annoyed because she was wearing sunglasses so no-one knew who she was.

She told me about how she thinks shampoo gives children cancer and how she bounces on a trampoline to sculpt the fabulous skyscraper heel legs that tell the world she’s sexy even though she’s the mother of Moses and a piece of fruit.

‘And Chris- well, he’s so talented. He takes his music very seriously,’ she opened up.

‘Do you think he takes quite a lot of stuff seriously?’ I asked, trying to widen my eyes.

‘No, not at all,’ she replied very seriously. ‘Chris has got a fantastic sense of humour. Just this morning over breakfast he was saying something really funny… Now what was that?’

I let her flail around like a weighted puppy for what seemed like an eternity before blowing the whistle and diving in with a basic bacon and egg gag, at which she laughed so hard I began to wonder if she really does find Chris a bit of a card.

I could tell right from the get-go that she wasn’t going to dish the dirt- she’s not desperate enough, having been born into fame and privilege.

So I took the liberty of switching off and playing ’shag, marry, cliff’, teaming her up with Jennifer and Angelina, seeing as they all like a bit of Brad Pitt.

It was a no-brainer she was ‘marry’- hell, I’d already managed to spend a few hours in her company without really listening. The other two were easy as well: ’shag’ Jen and ‘cliff’ Angelina (playing the rules by my original understanding of them, whereby ‘cliff’ is the person you are so crazy about you would be willing to jump off one with them).

When I came round, Gwynnie was talking about Anna Wintour and I regretted not paying attention. She said Anna started inviting her to lunches with John Galliano after her Oscar win and reckoned it was because the Queen of Vogue admired her work.

I let it slide. But it got me thinking about Shakespeare in Love.

‘Joseph Fiennes is quite intense but don’t you think his eyes are too close together?’ I asked, hungry for her professional opinion.

‘I was so blessed to work with Jo. He’s a giant of an actor,’ she replied.

‘Wow. Taller than Tim Robbins?’ I asked.

I think I got the wrong end of the stick but I knew she was relieved I didn’t allude to her acceptance speech debacle.

Instead, I praised her English accent and told her she was much better than Renee Zellweger, who sounds like she’s being goosed by the President but can’t let on.

Gwynnie found this remark distasteful. Angelina had warned me that she was a cut above but did I listen? No.

‘Have some of my Mum’s fruit cake with a thin layer of Lurpak butter on it,’ I suggested as she gathered her mobile phones to leave.

In reply to which- and oh, please God, may I never feel so wrong again- she gave me a look that still sends shivers down my spine.

‘I’m not sure I get you, Sophie,’ she said eventually, as she let two bodyguards help her on with her trainers. ‘But probing characters is my vocation so I’m going to take you to bed with me for a few nights to see what I can figure out.’

O.K, I thought.

As long as you don’t mind Jennifer Aniston joining us.

We love the fact that Gwyneth isn’t afraid to flash some thigh. (On the GoHoochie Planet, this is a sign of royalty and high breeding!)

I just watched “Iron Man” finally. Before I get into the movie, it is worth mentioning why I decided to watch it. First of all, I had recently read a large part of an article about Robert Downey Jr. in a magazine. But what directly caused it… I have no idea. What I do know is that I was reading reddit. So I checked my history and I honestly have no idea why I suddenly looked up “Iron Man”. As far as I can tell, I was reading a post where someone quoted some lyrics to a song. And then I skimmed it a bit more and then looked up the full song/wiki page on the band. Three minutes elapsed and then I looked up “Iron Man” on wiki. Then once I decided to watch the movie I flipped back to reddit and saw that the song was in “Iron Man”. Did I subconsciously see “Iron Man” in a post and decide to watch it? Or is my memory so painfully bad that that post (I have no recollection of reading it) actually triggered it. I think what actually happened was that I did glimpse “Iron Man” and then had a random sexual impulse (I remember seeing some teaser video where he shows off his dbagness and then bags the hot reporter girl) that led me to want to find a clip again. Then I just decided to watch the movie. Oh well, boys will be boys.

So the movie was pretty good. I have some mixed feelings about it, but I’m satisfied. No–that’s really the wrong word. What is of real interest in this movie is how little it satisfies the audience. I’m surprised it was received so well by the general public considering how little release it had. But before I get into that let’s just glaze over the movie.

“Iron Man” is an awesome hero and I’m surprised I never saw the cartoon or something on TV. To be honest I thought the acting was sort of corny, even for an action movie. Also, I couldn’t help but be extremely bothered by some random loops holes (you know, how he can do statistics in his head). But what actually bothers me is why it’s bothering me. I’m pretty sure that shit never bothered me before, maybe I just wasn’t paying attention. But really I think it’s that my roommate thinks I’m this logical robot freak (I sort of am) and I can’t be satisfied with an illogical movie. I’m proving him right for god knows what hilariously ironic reason. Anyways, moving on, what the hell was up with SHIELD. Why did they focus so much on that guy? What the hell are his super powers? Why is there a random close-up of him when Pepper and Tony go out to the balcony for fresh air? I was so confused.

Now to get to the issue of satisfaction. I really didn’t think there was that much fighting. Maybe it’s just because “Transformers” was so over the top, but there’s very few action sequences and the last fight is so tooth-and-nail that there was no “YEAH KICK-ASS DOMINATION” factor. I mean maybe that’s what makes it good, but honestly I was dreading the fact that he would have to fight with his old power source thing. I was like, “Mmmr he’s going to have to fight with his shitty power source… great.” I’m not sure why, but I imagine it’s the natural impulse of most people. Then there’s the fact that he never kisses Pepper and there’s not much at all in terms of the relationship’s progress; just a short and sweet “you’re the only one I have.”

And then, of course, if I haven’t mentioned her enough already, Pepper. Oh-em-gee why the hell does every girl in a movie have to be so interesting. The thing is I can’t even elucidate what qualities she had that make her so interesting. Maybe it’s just how easy she fell for the protagonist and how she was so fake. You know? Real girls (I just laughed at that) would scream, “What the hell is wrong with you?” after being forced to dance. Pepper, on the other hand, embarrasingly blushes, falls in love with Tony instantly, and then stumbles all over herself on the balcony. But maybe there’s still something else. Thankfully, real life is always there to give you a kick in the ass–Gwyneth Paltrow is married to Chris fucking Martin (I meant that derogatively) and is some religious retard (she’s the one with a kid named Apple. Also I don’t actually know if she’s religious I’m just tempted to use it due to some words in the wiki article that are sticking out).
Oh well; another dame, another night of soft-weeping.

Kidman es además de protagonista, productora de este largometraje de Footprint Investmen.

La actriz que debía interpretar a Greta, la mujer de Einar, era Charlize Theron, pero Charlize tuvo que dejar el proyecto y ya se confirmó que finalmente la esposa de Einar será Gwyneth Paltrow ¿Quién no se muere de ganas de ver a Gwyneth y Nicole como pareja?

La curiosa historia de esta pareja de danesas data de 1920 y la película está basada en la novela homónima de David Ebershoff. Todavía no tiene fecha de estreno pero está previsto que empiecen a rodar la película en breve, así que no creo que tardemos demasiado en poder verla en el cine.

SINOPSIS

Celebrities have helped in raising thousands of dollars for charity by donating their designer cast-offs to a U.K. department store’’s garage sale.

Stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Elizabeth Hurley and Dame Shirley Bassey cleared out their wardrobes for The Really Really Great Garage Sale at London’’s Selfridges store on November 15 in aid of the Mothers4Children charity.

A pair of Bassey’’s shoes sold for 100 pounds, while Paltrow and Hurley’’s unwanted clothes also helped raise much needed cash.

Funnyman David Walliams, British singer Louise Redknapp and TV presenter Denise van Outen were among the stars manning stalls, each garnering more than 5,000 pounds in profit.

“It’’s actually hard to part with things because as I was putting it in the bag, I thought, ”I might wear that”,” the Daily Express quoted Redknapp as saying.

“And then something kicked in and I thought, ”This is going to help a lot of children in difficult periods of their lives”, and that’’s more important than me wearing it on a Saturday night out,” Redknapp added.

La scorsa settimana abbiamo riportato la notizia del flirt che sarebbe avvenuto tra il cantante dei Coldplay Chris Martin e l’attrice Kate Bosworth. Niente di grave se lui non fosse sposato con Gwyneth Paltrow. I due da tempo, secondo alcuni giornali, sarebbero in crisi e lui trarrebbe piacere nel frequentare altre donne. La moglie però saputo dai giornali dell’incontro avvenuto tra Martin e la Bosworth avrebbe parlato con il marito il quale la avrebbe tranquillizzata – ma non fanno tutti così? -. Secondo In Touch il cantante è tornato a casa in Inghilterra anche se, secondo alcuni amici della coppia, i due avranno, prossimamente, molto di cui parlare.

Definir os melhores filmes desta década não é tarefa fácil, porém uma de minhas certezas é que Two Lovers estará posicionado numa das dez primeiras colocações, enquanto James Gray continuará expandindo seu talento e provando o por quê atualmente é um dos melhores diretores americanos.

Two Lovers é algo muito mais aproximado a um atacante do que um mero romance, quando desvia de tudo e todos para chegar aos sentimentos; atingindo-lhes como uma flecha molhada de amor e solidão – aliás, havia tempos que não via algo tão humano e profundo como a relação estabelecida no Cinema entre essas duas coisas. No ínicio fez-se o amor, e no final há a solidão – que por mais bem acompanhada que esteja, sempre será aquela solidão que permanece no fundo de nós; intocável e surpreendente.

Joaquim Phoenix está aqui em seu melhor papel, e transparece uma quimica com Gray excelente. É uma pena que deixará de trabalhar na carreira de ator.. realmente, uma pena! Em Two Lovers sua personagem é tão sincera e singela que fica dificil não transformar-se no próprio Leonard, e sentir a angústia do amor. Este é um dos poucos filmes atuais que você realmente sente como um arrepio cada escolha do personagem de Phoenix. E essa relação conosco é tão magistral quanto a melhor de todas – Alain Delon em 1972, com A Primeira Noite de Tranquilidade.

Muito maior que a própria pretensão, e porém inferior a We Own the Night, Two Lovers acaba sendo um tocante exercicio de Cinema, levado às relações, à angústia e ao sentimento de aprisionamento que ecoa dentro do protagonista. Onde, afinal, tudo é e sempre foi o Amor.

Hon har beskrivits som “den första att göra en könskorrigering” och “den transsexuella dansken” – och jag menar inte Christine Jorgenssen som är den mest kända, utan Lili Elbe. Jag har bloggat om henne förut, i samband med att det blev känt att hennes liv ska bli film. Svenska Daniel Alfredsson har fått Nicole Kidman att tacka ja till huvudrollen, och Gwyneth Paltrow som Lilis fru Gerda i The Danish Girl.

Idag hittar jag en intervju med Kidman i Nöjesbladet, där hon förklarar:

Spela inte man. Spela en kvinna med manlig kropp.

Förmodligen är du för välkänd för att kunna göra som Hilary Swank gjorde inför Boys Don’t Cry: Hon provade på att klä sig som man och röra sig ute för att verkligen få uppleva hur det är att vara transperson, när hon skulle spela Brandon Teena. Synd, för annars är det förmodligen den bästa research du kan göra. Det, och att lyssna mer på transpersoner själva än på någon annan.
