Le GH1 est mon chouchou depuis le début. Pourquoi ?

J’ai eu la chance de tester tout ce qui se fait sur le marché … J’ai préféré le GH1 parce que j’ai déjà d’autres caméras plus volumineuses et que je cherchais une mini camera performante … Gérant d’une société qui propose du matériel de tournage à la location comme la petite P2, la déjà ancienne HVX200 panasonic ou encore la superbe RED One, j’avais au début tout misé sur le 5D mkII … mais voilà, comme je l’ai déjà dit c’est un boitier impossible à utiliser tel quel. Sans un pied, impossible de cadrer corectement à bout de bras avec le LCD … il existe des loupes qui se greffent sur le Viseur, mais c’est quand meme pas donné et pas forcément pratique. L’autre étape qui m’a refroidi c’est la postprod. Etant très exigeant, vu que chez les Machineurs on vend aussi de l’étalonnage, je ne pouvait envisager de rester dans le codec de base des Canon. Hors, pour pouvoir exploiter corectemnt les fichiers il faut les transcoder dans un codec plus souple à utiliser et surtout moins destructif en postprod. La phase d’import et de transformation de code doit se faire par une conversion dans Compressor ou par MpegStreamClip par exemple. C’est fastidieux !

Le GH1 propose une ergonomie qui n’est pas parfaite mais qui le rend utilisable directement à la sortie de la boite l’oeil rivé dans le superbe viseur electronique. Ou par le biais du LCD orientable. C’est un plus non négligeable. Autre chose importante le GH1 est le seul appareil qui a un Autofocus efficace en vidéo par détection de contraste. On peut dans le cas ou on utilise un steadycam par exemple quasiment faire conviance a l’autofocus. Un des critères qui on fait que je me suis intéressé à cet appareil c’est son ouverture sur le monde exérieur, au niveau des optiques. Ayant toute une panoplie d’optiques Nikon et Pentax, à l’aide de superbes bagues Novoflex j’ai pu adapter des jolis cailloux et profiter ainsi de mon 50mm f:1,4 qui offre de très jolis flous à pleine ouverture.

Alors oui, le codec du GH1 est un poil moins bon que celui des Canon … mais je trouve que le jeu n’en vaut pas la chandelle. Je préfère sacrifier un peu de la qualité d’image sur l’hotel de l’ergonomie.

Le 7D est arrivé dans ma besace je vais pouvoir le tester plus en profondeur … mais je pense que la route est longue pour arriver à me combler comme le fait le GH1.

H.264 Standalone DVRs compatible with Windows 7

   With the release of the Windows 7, many customers have been upgrading their PCs.  So we have gotten many calls with questions in regards to Windows 7.  In short, yes…all of our H.264 Standalone DVR recorders are indeed compatible with the IE8 browser in Windows Vista and Windows 7, however, you may need to perform additional security configuration in order to view your security cameras on your Vista or Windows 7 PC first.

   If you have one of our H.264 Standalone DVRs, then YES you can connect to the DVR in Windows 7.  Many customers may have run into a problem with the security settings in Windows 7 (Internet Explorer 8).  Below we have provided easy instructions for setting up your PC to allow you to view your cameras through IE8 in Windows 7.  After your configure your internet explorer security settings, you will be able to view your cameras once again from anywhere in the world using your Windows 7 PC.  You will need to add the DVR’s page into the Trusted Sites of your Internet Explorer Web browser.

In your IE web browser, open up the page for your Standalone DVR…then go to Tools –> Internet Options

Click on the Security Tab –> Trusted Sites –> and click the “Sites” button

Add the Website to your trusted sites list, and ensure that the check box for “Require Server Verification (https:)” is unchecked…and click Close

Add your DVR's Address to Trusted Sites List

Back at the Internet Options screen, click –> Custom Level then scroll down to find the Following:
1.  Download Unsigned ActiveX Controls –> Set to Prompt
2.  Initialize and script ActiveX Controls not marked as safe –> Set to Prompt

Set ActiveX Controls for Windows 7

Click OK  and Click OK on the Internet Options menu.

Now refresh the page and you will be able to view your H.264 Standalone DVR in Windows 7.

MPEG Streamclip for Mac or Windows is a CHAMP at converting the H.264 footage! And it’s FREE.

One of the most common questions that I get from people regarding the new breed of HD-DSLR cameras is “What’s your post-workflow?”

Truth be told – most of it is actually extremely straightforward.  It does get fancy when you try to do some high end stuff- but that workflow applies to maybe one percent of people – so here is the simple workflow:

Simply put – all you need to do is to convert the native footage from the Canon 5D / 7D / 1D MKIV from the AVC H.264 format to a format that your computer and software will support.

For me it’s simple given that I work with Final Cut Studio – I work with Apple’s ProRes codec.  What this means is that I simply convert the H.264 footage to the higher quality (and less compressed) ProRes format. (Avid supposedly supports the H.264 format natively according to some post houses that I’ve worked with – but I admit to not being an Avid or Adobe Premier expert by any means.)

Why do you need to do this?  Well simply put – most software does not support the editing of H.264 footage natively – some do.  Final Cut Pro doesn’t – you’ll find that it can crash every few minutes – or worst – every few seconds.   You’ll find that the video is extremely choppy – and that it can be close to impossible to do frame-accurate edits.   The reason is simple:  the computer has to decompress this (compressed) footage on the fly.  And that takes a lot of GPU (Graphic card) power.    Older MacBook Pros and even the top end Mac Pro tower with the most expensive graphics card can choke on this task… ironically you’ll find that the new MacBook Pros do much better than the top-end Mac Pros… and that’s just plain silly.  Why?  Well the MacBook Pros have a H.264 chip built onto their graphics card!   This helps play all of the iTunes m4v files (movie files) more smoothly.

So how do YOU do it?

Well, there are MANY ways to do this.   You can use Final Cut Studio’s Compressor software – I create droplets and drop my files onto them.  Very very easy.

Compressor “Droplets” allow you to simply drag and drop your Canon files onto the icons… the software does all of the rest.

I’ve also converted the file within Final Cut Pro using either the Batch Export feature – or even the media manager menu.

Compressor is good – and easy.  But some of you may not own Final Cut Studio… so what do you do?

Well I recommend you look into the utility that has quickly become my absolute favorite way of converting my footage:  Squared 5’s MPEG Streamclip. Not only is it extremely easy to use (see Chris Fenwick’s most excellent video tutorial here) but it’s also often faster than Compressor and is much cheaper…

Much cheaper!

It’s FREE.  And frankly I don’t know why.  Because I would gladly shell out $100 bucks or more for this app. It’s that good.

I’ve found that the app is extremely fast (faster than compressor!) – it allows me to point it to folders and it will ignore all of the THM files and CR2s in the folder – and off it goes.   You can pause it in the middle of a re-compression batch should you need to shut down your laptop or unplug your external hard drive.  Basically it’s a dream.

Lately I find myself using two codecs most often – Apple ProRes 422 has always been my gold standard, and recently w/ the new FCP Studio I find myself using Apple ProRes Proxy – to do quick edits on my laptop.

Obviously – the size of the de-compressed files will depend on what codec (fancy word for video format) that you chose.  ProRes 444 will be much bigger than ProRes 422 or ProRes Proxy obviously.  Apple details the sizes somewhere on the web if you’re real curious. (OK HERE it is…) and in even more detail HERE.

Basically – to keep it simple – if you’re just getting started – just follow Chris Fenwick’s tutorial above – or decompress you H.264 footage into ProRes 422.  And you’ll be all set to get going in all of this.  Remember to always keep the ORIGINAL footage somewhere safe in case some incredible new technology comes out years from now – but work off of the ProRes files from that point on.

I had a project today to mass encode a bunch of videos that are in the .mov format. The requirements for the job specify if the video file is 640×480 resolution just encode the video with the H264 codec. If the video is not 640×480 I must resize the video to 720×480. I wrote a little bash script to help me sort through the files and encode them.

Let me explain how the program works for those unfamiliar with Bash

files="$(ls *\.mov)"

The command ls gets a directory listing with only the .mov files and saves it into the variable “files”. In this example I am only looking for files with the .mov file extension.

The for loop lets my program iterate through the files available in the directory that have a .mov file extension.

This just checks that the file is valid and exists.

This command is essential for identifying the video resolution. I use ffmpeg to get information about the file and then use grep to determine the resolution using a regular expression. It is important to note that the grep command “grep -m 1 Video” only matches the first resolution found. Some times ffmpeg will list multiple video resolutions. If the resolution is listed more than once the bash program fails.

This command converts the video file using the H264 codec. I try to retain the same quality as the original video using the parameters shown above.

qt-faststart ${movie_file}.mp4 ${movie_file}.fs.mp4

qt-faststart puts the meta data contained in the video file in the head of the file. The meta data by default is contained in the tail of the file. The tail meta data messes up flowplayer or the flash player you are using because video must be downloaded before the video player can obtain the meta data about the video. Google search on the term “moov atom” to learn more.

DivxLabs Previously, getting MKV to work properly inside Windows 7 Media Center has required quite a bit of effort on the part of the end user. It was necessary to install a number of third party codecs, make modifications to the registry and tweak codec settings to get everything to play nicely. By default Windows 7 Media Center uses a new method for playing back audio video content known as Windows Media Foundation which replaces the older method known as DirectShow. Unfortunately, every codec package available to this point is programmed for DirectShow and doesn’t take advantage of the new WMP format meaning playing non-supported formats was a substantial hassle.

Luckily for us there is a small light at the end of the tunnel in the form of Divx Lab’s MKV project. The Divx Lab’s project aims to utilize the Windows Media Foundation to enable playback of the popular MKV format on both the main Media Center machine as well as extenders. Not only does this mean support for extenders but it could also very well mean the end to playing with various codec package settings to tweak the audio/video settings to match the output of the default Media Center playback.

Beyond enabling playback through your Windows Media Center Extenders, the picture quality of the Windows Media Foundation solution is incredible and contains complete DVXA hardware acceleration support. So not only is the quality fantastic but hardware acceleration will keep frame rates right where they should be without the drops that can sometimes occur with CPU intensive codecs such as FFDShow.

Using Divx Lab’s MKV preview video quality is amazing in full 1080p without so much as a hint of latency in the playback. There are still a few downsides to using the preview though. For instance, you’ll still be required to install a third party codec for audio playback depending on the audio encoding used for your movies. The newest version of AC3Filter is all you’ll need though and provides ACM wrapper allowing the playback to be passed through Windows Media Foundation as well.

O mercado de codecs pode sofre modificações a médio prazo, pois foi anunciado o acordo de aquisição da On2 Technologies pela Google ainda este ano. A On2 (A.K.A. The Duck Corporation ) é uma empresa especializada no mercado de compressão de vídeos em alta qualidade. Seguinte o site da empresa, mais de 2 bilhões de computadores no mundo utilizam a sua tecnologia de compressão, “On2 Video é o formato líder entre as empresas de soluções de mídia incluindo Adobe, Skype, Nokia, Infineon, Sun Microsystems, Mediatek, Sony, Brightcove e Move Networks”.

Sendo assim, é muito provável a Google passar a utilizar o codev VP8 na versão HTML5 do YouTube. Isto provocaria uma atualização imediata de codecs em massa nos navegadores (substituindo os formatos padrões em Flash).

Pensei que o reinado do h.264 estava intocável por um breve período. Mas com esta compra da On2 pela Google, o cenário muda completamente. A especificação técnica menciona que o VP8 é mais eficiente que H.264. Se a Google liberar o uso do VP8 (como sempre faz)  ou utilizar uma política de licenciamento menos agressiva ao mercando, com certeza  o futuro do vídeo monitoramento e das mídia  digitais não estará tão definido como eu imaginava.

O VP8 possui o loop filter (permite filtro em diferentes partes do quadro), suporta processadores a partir do ARM 9 100MHZ (Viva \o/ !!!) e explora com e eficiência os processadores multicore paralelizados SMP (multiprocessamento simétrico).

Para efeito de informação, lembro como se fosse hoje, quando em 2002  (Ainda  usava o Conectiva ) a On2 liberou para domínio público o codec VP3. O mesmo serviu de base para o desenvolvimento do codec de código aberto Ogg Theora que utilizo no meu dia-a-dia.

Installing FFDShow64

ffdshow is an advanced DirectShow filter and VFW codec that supports many audio and video formats.
For example: H.264, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, H.263, VP3, VP6, Theora, MJPEG, SVQ3, MP3, AC3, DTS, E-AC3, AAC, and Vorbis.

Install the codec like any other Windows package.

Select your settings for the various codec.
If you are unsure, leave as default.

 
Take care how you like digital out to be handled.

S/PDIF equals Digital out. (Digital/Optical)
HDMI with/via the gfx card output.

Select your speaker setup from the presets.

Keep working on the settings if you need.
You might want to enable subtitle etc.

Installing MPC HC x64

Media Player Classic Home Cinema is a free audio and video player for Windows.

Modern graphics card offer the possibility to decode partially or completely a video stream using DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA),
in order to reduce CPU usage dramatically. MPC-HC includes an embedded video decoder that uses this technology, to decode H.264 and VC-1
with hardly any CPU time required. Unfortunately the MPC-HC decoder only supports the “bitstream mode” at this stage, which means that only
the most recent graphic cards are supported: nVidia series 8(9)xxx for H.264 only and ATI Radeon HD series for H.264 and VC-1 decoding.

DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) is a Microsoft API specification for the Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 platforms that allows
video decoding to be hardware accelerated. The pipeline allows certain CPU-intensive operations such as iDCT, motion compensation,
deinterlacing and color correction to be offloaded to the GPU. DXVA 2.0 allows more operations, including video capturing and processing
operations, to be hardware accelerated as well.

Enhanced Video Renderer

Media Foundation uses the Enhanced Video Renderer (EVR) for rendering video content, which acts as a mixer as well. It can mix up to 16
simultaneous streams, with the first stream being a reference stream. All but the reference stream can have per-pixel transparency information,
as well as any specified z-order. The reference stream cannot have transparent pixels, and has a fixed z-order position, at the back of all streams.
The final image is composited onto a single surface by coloring each pixel according to the color and transparency of the corresponding pixel in all streams.

Internally, the EVR uses a mixer object for mixing the streams. It can also deinterlace the output and apply color correction, if required.
The composited frame is handed off to a presenter object, which schedules them for rendering onto a Direct3D device, which it shares
with the DWM and other applications using the device. The frame rate of the output video is synchronized with the frame rate of the reference stream.
If any of the other streams (called substreams) have a different frame rate, EVR discards the extra frames (if the substream has a higher frame rate),
or uses the same frame more than once (if it has a slower frame rate).

If you use FFDShow64, you have tons of useful options.
Use the systray icon to bring up the options GUI.

Test you settings to fit your needs, keep it default if you are unsure.

Look for:

- GPU based output. (No CPU load) 
- Multicore support.  (Split load ,and full use of all cores/CPU’s.)
- Keeping everything x64. (No *32 code running)

Playing MKV files and possibly accelerating them with a compatible graphics card has been a hot item these last couple of months.
