Beyond the mountains are mountains and beyond them is the sea. Herein lies the beauty of Oahu, at its core and far away from the beaches lined with hotel chains. I travel northward on H3 from the leeward side to the windward side, and I cross valleys that are so far below me that I feel like I am on wings. What I see is verdant green, jagged cliffs with crevices carved by the waterfalls, which are dry now because it is not raining, but are only slightly less beautiful than when the water does gush forward and spill into the deep ravines below. These are the Koolau Mountains, the range that separates Honolulu and Kanoehe, and below is the Halawa Valley. The ribbon of H3 is a marvel: it is suspended in the air, supported by giant piers at short intervals, thus giving this highway the characteristics of a long bridge — a long bridge overhanging a valley floor more than 1000 feet below! I vacillate between fear of falling and admiration of nature that evolved over thousands of years. The electrical lines draping across the canyons inspire equal awe as I consider how they must have been laid, the time-consuming task completed by man and flying machine. A viewing point rests along the right of the road as I near Kaneohe and at the same time the sea peeks out beneath the mountain vistas on the left. I have just emerged from the Tetsuo Harano Tunnel that connects the two sides of the island. This is one of my favorite views, and so I never give up the chance to go to Kaneohe, even if it is only for the ride.

My husband and I have used our last couple of Saturdays to do just that — ride over to Kaneohe. We go to the mall, have lunch at Ruby Tuesday’s, then meander through the stores, always with the idea of making our way to the book store before walking back across the parking lot to the car. In the parking lot are feral chickens, small birds that look as docile as their tame cousins, but are most likely the descendents of jungle fowl that were introduced to the islands by Polynesian voyagers. For some residents, these chickens have been a problem for they carry diseases that threaten to infect their own domesticated animals, but there is no oversight of the chickens, no government or environmental agency to call, so these fowl are allowed to continue to run in the wild. We do as the other islanders do; we respect our distance.

Looking toward the mountains we usually see the mist and today is no exception. It is there encircling the ridges that back Kaneohe against the sea, and is as mysterious as the legends it inspired. The mist is accompanied by cool temperatures that we don’t get this time of year on our side of the island. It is a win-win situation — cooling tropics and inspirational views.

This side of the island is not so commercialized. It is not so crowded, and it is not so bound by the laws of business. It seems freer here and more natural. The scenic views of a bay without the mar of large hotel chains certainly add to that feeling. Mountains high enough to touch the clouds do that, too. I begin to understand why the legends are slow to die here.

As we clip along H3 back toward Honolulu, I notice the highway sign that directs fellow travelers to the Pali Lookout, the site of a historic battle that dates back to 1795, a date only 19 years after the year the mainland colonies declared their independence. It is there that King Kamehameha I of Hawaii (the Big Island) defeated the Oahu king and took control of the island. The Battle of Nu’uanu was long and bloody, culminating in an advantageous break for Kamehameha’s men who then drove Kalanikupule’s army over the cliffs. A painting of this scene, an artist’s rendition of the men from Maui and Oahu up against the men from Hawaii, holding spears as they fall to their deaths, hangs in the Bishop Museum in Honolulu and now provides color to the reality of the historic event. With Kamehameha’s victory, the islands were united under his rule and the rule of his descendents till the business leaders of Honolulu conspired to overthrow the monarchy in 1898.

The wind is exceptionally forceful at the lookout, and signs warn visitors to keep a tight handle on all their possessions — including their small children. Legends abound here, hiding in the nooks of the ridges and in the stones that guard the path that leads down the pali (cliffs). The uneven path is both steep and narrow, giving a new perspective to the saying “between a rock and a hard place.” At the far end of the pali are two stones, Ka-lae-hau-ola and Hapu’u, which are said to have been goddesses to whom travelers paid kapa (bark cloth) and flowers to ensure safe passage. I think about the Battle of Nu’uanu and the 800 skulls that were uncovered here during the construction of the highway. The wind blows unmercilessly – perhaps then, too, scattering the army of Kalanikupule as they flew off the cliffs, much like the picture depicts. The legend tells us that this is also a place of rebirth, a place where parents once buried the umbilical cords of their babies in hopes of protecting them against the ravages of life, and a place where the kingdom of Hawaii was born from the death of brave warriors.

Generally, it is 4:00 when we arrive back at our house, even if we don’t stop at the Pali Lookout. The ride beyond the mountains has given us hope that the island fever will go away soon, though the feeling of claustrophobia again threatens. Another trip to the other side of the island is requisite; the connection between nature and imagination needs to be sustained. And maybe a trip to another island is in order. Surely more is out there – beyond the mountains.

Busy Bees within a “Hibernating” Economy CSI Professionals, Inc. on Corporate Social Responsibility,

Busy Bees within a “Hibernating” Economy

CSI Professionals, Inc. on Corporate Social Responsibility,

“Looking Back and Giving Back”

“Tragic, Traumatic, Devastating, An Awakening”. These are words that could describe the effects of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng to the Philippines.

If there is one important Filipino value that needs to materialize among our people during these tough economic times, (as aggravated by frequent natural disasters), it is social responsibility.

We have seen efforts carried out by Filipinos all over the world, in the mission to aid our affected brothers and sisters from the recent Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng. Organizations and businesses of different types have been facilitating relief efforts and fund-raisers to reach out to the victims.

It has been said that in the Philippine setting, corporate social responsibility is about business giving back to society. As a Filipino-American company, CSI Professionals, Inc. want to “look back” and “give back” to our home country, especially during these challenging times.

Last October 22, 2009, CSI together with GMA Kapuso Foundation and several Filipino artists gathered in a mission to raise funds for the benefit of the recent typhoon victims. It was a night of enjoyment and unity. Every song sung, dance executed, guitar string plucked and drumset beat, touched and echoed in the hearts of everyone present in the assembly. With a much felt sense of unity and brotherhood, Filipinos, Filipino-Americans and even foreigners participated in becoming ONE for the sake of charity and social responsibility.

On the other hand, in the morning of that same day, CSI Professionals, Inc. also reached out to local and international students of Santa Monica College during their job fair. There were many inquiries that gathered by the CSI booth, and a lot of information on CSI’s job openings and employment-based sponsorship was disseminated among students and job hunters from within and outside the campus.

Indeed, it was a big and fulfilling day for CSI Professionals, Inc., and it still aims to tap more from the concerned public.

Speaking of the concerned public, CSI, in continuation of its marathon of employment and immigration seminars, held another successful session last October 16, 2009 at our Glendale office.

A small group was given a specific discussion on employment and US and Canadian employment-based sponsorship, with the help of some of our retained lawyers. Particular questions from the attendees were answered, and personal consultations were made upon request.

Another seminar is scheduled to take place on November 6, 2009 and almost all seats are taken. CSI’s marathon of employment and immigration seminars will continue until the end of this year. Call now and reserve your seats! Sitting room for CSI’s seminars are occupied fast.

It’s not over yet. CSI will continue to join and implement efforts through different events and projects. Watch out for announcements on upcoming CSI fund raising activities, job fairs and expo’s.

Dealing with Adversity and the Current Economy: Filipinos at heart, Filipinos in Action CSI Professi

Dealing with Adversity and the Current Economy:

Filipinos at heart, Filipinos in Action

CSI Professionals Inc. on Reaching Out to Typhoon Victims and Adaptations to Job Placement Concerns

Philippines – an archipelago whose weather is characterized by only two seasons (dry and rainy). While it only experiences limited weather patterns, calamities often brought about by such are very powerful and can cause extensive devastation.

For the past few weeks, the Philippines experienced two major typhoons which resulted to severe flooding; and per reports, there is another one soon to likely hit the northern part of the Philippines while restoration of the estimated 15 billion worth of damages incurred from Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng are still ongoing.

This tragic series of incidents in our home country triggered the unity and “bayanihan” among our people. Fellow Filipinos, even those based abroad, and people from other nations are reaching out to give support and donations whether it’s in kind or in cash.

Being a Filipino-American company, we at CSI professionals Inc. also want to help our kababayan’s. Participating in the benefit concert organized by GMA Network – “WE ARE ONE”, we joined with our fellow Pinoys in raising funds for our affected brothers and sisters. This concert featured artists like Ms. Lea Salonga and Quest Crew dance group and other Filipino celebrities last October 22, 2009 at ALEX Theater in Glendale, CA. In addition, CSI will host its own fund drive on November entitled, “Ilakad, Ikanta, Magkaisa para sa Nasalanta” – a walk and promotions with a cause for typhoon victims.

People gather in the midst of a crisis; but taking to account these tragedies and the current global economic crisis, we can compare how the Philippines and the U.S. (as different nations), deal with adversity. In example, U.S. unemployment shooting to 9.8% last September resorted to (if not more) budget cuts from the U.S. governent; while in the Philippines, where unemployment and the peso value have always been issues aside from its other major concerns; plus the fact that it’s now dealing with relief operations and recovery, is still struggling on which problem to attack first and or is suffering from “wrong manipulation of resources.”

Like people, different nations have their own ways of treating a problem. Tracing back to U.S. history, it looks like its going to be a V-shape recovery ahead, instead of a W-shaped economoy or double dip recession. The trend seems to be that the smaller job losses there are, the more they will pave way to job gains. We hope for the same in the Phillipine setting, since this should be another chain reaction of economic trends.

How should one deal with a problem? Or better yet, how should one anticipate, prepare for or prevent a problem? We always advise our clients to be ready for possible challenges in employment and immigration concerns. In continuation of our free marathon of seminars, we are hosting another seminar on “Immigration: Adapting to Change” on November 6, 2009. Call our office through the details below to reserve your seat!

“The trials of life are far less important than how one deals with them.” Know your employment options and start dealing with them with your own determination and use available resources well. People are out there to help, but proven EXPERTS like CSI Professionals, Inc. have always been there waiting to help YOU.

I suppose it’s about time I let you in on this secret life I’ve been leading. When I disappear into the warrens of Boston for an evening and return home sweaty and smelling of cheap beer, I have been slightly misleading you by saying I was out for a run.

Because it is so much more than that.

You see, I’m a Hash House Harrier.

Surrounded by some of the city’s weirdest and most raucous (read: awesome) denizens, I run through the streets following hastily made chalk marks made on the sidewalks. Some of these marks lead to absolutely nowhere. Dead-ends. But—and this is the key here—others lead to beer. The challenge is to find this enlightened path. Bud Lite-hism.

But let me back up a little bit. The group (abbreviated as H3 or HHH) dates back to 1938, where Malaysian-based British officers playing hares-and-hounds would reward themselves with cold beer at the end of the trail. Today, I guess we’ve grown impatient, for not only is there beer at the end of the trail, but there is also some at the beginning and one or two (or more) others in the middle of the trail.

There are H3 groups everywhere: from Istanbul to Moscow to Athens to Kampala. They are in over 180 countries and on every continent. Yes, even Antarctica. There are people who travel the globe participating in these runs, crashing on fellow hashers’ couches.

It’s an astounding community. And like a true community, it has certain rituals and rites. Like naming. When you’ve run with a chapter long enough for them to get some dirt on you, you lose your birth name in favor of a more, er, unsavory one. The Boston hash is joined by Doogie Plows-Her, Night of the Giving Head, and Willy Wonka and the Back Door Factory, to name a few.

First time runners are Virgins. You are only a virgin once, like real life. The pack’s deflowering of the Virgins is, in a word, humiliating. Like real life. (I am in the limbo period between virginity and naming. Right now, I am “Just Katie.” I’ll let you know when that changes.)

There are also songs. Awful, awful…awfully funny songs. YouTube them if you’re curious.

Naming, songs, and accusations (wearing a hat in circle, wearing new shoes to the hash) all happen at the end of the run. Food, usually pizza, and more beer are served. Then, it’s a general party. It’s perfect.

So it’s a cool running/drinking club. Big deal. Why have I written 400 words on the subject?

Because this is my niche.

When I look at myself in the mirror, I see a really weird person. I think that’s a good thing, but I recognize that my amplified personality, rife with “because no means yes” jokes and satirical perceptions, can rub the populace the wrong way. The result is an identity stifled. All those quips I want to say are repressed and probably turning into tumors at the base of my cerebral cortex.

The Hash House Harriers exemplify my character in a brilliantly public way. We make spectacles of ourselves, make no accommodations for political correctness, and defy open container laws. We are proud of these facts. With the pack, I am who I am.

I am a hasher.

CSI Professionals, Inc. on Fund-raising for Typhoon Ondoy Victims

“Everything flows, nothing stands still…No man can cross the same river twice…” – a wise aphorism and saying according to Heraclitus, a pre-Socratic Greek Philosopher.

If the river is the “change”, a man can not cross the “same” river twice because it’s in a constant, flowing movement. Just like the changes that we encounter everyday, even if characterized by sudden or slowly evolving alterations, they are permanent and inevitable and can happen in an instant. Just like the recent calamity that struck the Philippines just a few days ago.

Manila, Philippines – September 26, 2009: typhoon Ondoy hit Metro Manila. Pouring a month’s amount of rainfall in just 6 hours, it caused great flood to the metropolitan and nearby areas. The ruins from its aftermath are heart-breaking, as seen on the news, in pictures and 1st-hand video footages from witnesses of this terrible disaster. This is yet another challenge to the Philippines and its people, but definitely one of the few that has and will continue to affect great impact as a nation. Aside from remains and debris, what was seen floating (and should continue to emerge so) is the remarkable bayanihan of the Filipino people.

Filipinos, being proofs of resiliency and of democratic practices, know how to attack problems with faith, determination and unity. Reaching out to the victims of Ondoy, it was observable that everyone – civilians, students, celebrities, politicians, organizations, etc. went out their way to help in any way they can. Different rescue and relief operations, charity programs, running of donations, and the like were swiftly implemented extensively to help our affected brothers and sisters.

Just the same, we Filipinos here in America want to reach out to the victims of Ondoy. As a Filipino-American company, CSI Professionals, Inc. will be hosting a fund-raising program: Ilakad, Ikanta, Magkaisa para sa Nasalanta (Fund Raising Event for Typhoon Ondoy Victims). A walk for a cause will initiate the fund drive on October 10, 2009 and all proceeds will be sent to the victims. For more details on our fund drive and to know how you can help Ondoy victims, please see contact details below.

As Manuel L. Quezon III stated in his recent article, “…bayanihan will get us through these terrible days.”

I sat down last night to write some interesting thoughts and because of one silly date auto-completion, ended up spending the first twenty minutes of my writing session having a stream of conscious conversation with Microsoft Word. Here it is (sadly) unedited.

—-

September 8, 2009

How does Microsoft know that I want to enter the date. Cool feature. Microsoft also knows to capitalize itself, that self-serving bastard, even if Microsoft isn’t at the beginning of a sentence. I wonder if it capitalizes google or yahoo or facebook. Holy shit Microsoft doesn’t even have the word google in its dictionary. That has to be a joke/easter egg. The “its, it’s” possessive thing is kind of a bitch. In every other context “’s” is possessive, but for “it” you cruel, cruel, contractioning mother-fucker you have to remove the apostrophe. If no one ever said “it is”, “its” would be spelled “it’s”.

Most confusing sentence ever to properly punctuate.

In case you were wondering, here are the Microsoft word rules on capitalizing other words: john, cory, smith, Einstein, Newton, Galileo, Leonardo, matt, are you fucking kidding me Microsoft? What is this the fucking parade of history capitalization rules? What about van gogh, or Rembrandt, or bach, or Beethoven, or godel, or Escher. I swear I am peeking into the brain of one man who designed this feature and spent 2 hours thinking of the most fucked up self-biased list of proper nouns known to man. How do you feel about America, chile, Ecuador, brazil, mexico, panama, and galapogos. What is so goddamn special about Ecuador?!?! How about argentina, peru, machu pichu, incas, Aztec, inca, Aztecs, mayans, Cherokee, jeep, Toyota, Honda, accura, ferarri, Lamborghini, Porsche, did I spell ferari or Ferrari wrong? Ha! You like fast cars crazy Microsoft man. Man I should really be getting tired of this but I didn’t even cover the globe. I am Africa, Europe, asia, Antarctica, okay – asia? Really? Asia? Ha, sentence starting cheater. I am London, paris, Barcelona, Tokyo, boston, ouch, Chicago, ouch! I am los angeles, Miami, florida, Massachusetts, this feels really REALLY ARBITRARY MICROSOFT!!

Into Africa we go, zambia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Ethiopia, poor zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Nairobi, Lusaka, oh for the LOVE OF GOD Lusaka? And addis ababa, china, ha, cause I’m talking about fine tea sets, korea, Carolina, Montana, Hampshire, Vermont, maine, probably is spelled too close to “main” to auto correct. Hmm maybe there’s more thought here than I realized. Could also apply to chile and possibly even asia, bach, but not so much mexico. A Christina, Emily, joseph, Irene, bob, Robert, sam, Samuel, adam, Abigail, Barbara, bush, Clinton, nadir, Ralph, nader, Washington, Lincoln, Abraham, Ibrahim, mohammed, ugh. That one hurts. And, jesus, Christ, well that’s just weird. And Buddha? And islam? Wow. And muslim? Wow! Not even in the dictionary.

Getting tired and bored. This was made using Microsoft word 2003 for windows xp. And typed exclusively in lowercase.

The Laborer and the Employer: Finding themselves in the same Elevator (going up?) CSI on Labor Day C

The Laborer and the Employer: Finding themselves

in the same Elevator (going up?)

CSI on Labor Day Celebration and Grand Immigration Seminar

Every 1st Monday of September, the U.S. celebrates Labor Day in honor of the American Workers and the labor movement.

During the Industrial revolution in the late 1800’s, an average American would work 12-hour days for seven days a week in order to make ends meet. Employers looking for cheaper and practical workers resorted to Child Labor; and this became prominent since such laws were not strongly enforced that time.

Long hours and terrible working conditions such as child labor, paved the way to the formation of American unions who voiced out their demands for better working conditions . On September 5, 1882, 10,000 workers marched from city hall to Union Square in New York City, bringing forth the first-ever Labor Day parade. Participants took unpaid day-off’s to honor the American workers, as well as for them to address their issues with employers.

By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of the workers, and on June 28 of the same year, the congress passed an act wherein the first Monday of September of each year will be dedicated to celebrating the glory of workers.

At present, we are just treating this holiday as a day-off from work; but tracing back the history of what made it “special” leads us to realize the importance of human resources in our society and the world, the cycle of economic circumstances, and the adaptations that workers and employers alike undertake in order to survive.

Opportune enough, CSI, along with some law offices is hosting another Grand Seminar this month–“Immigration Today: Adapting to Change” – to be held at our Glendale Branch Office on September 18 and 26, 2009.

This is in continuation of our marathon of informative seminars on EMPLOYMENT and IMMIGRATION. Incidentally and as always, the seminar will be free of charge for the participants.

If you are an interested applicant, we can also give you a FREE consultation to assess your qualifications to suit a specific job opening. Thus, do not forget to bring your resume and passport.

Please call CSI through the details below to make a reservation for you, your family and friends.

CSI will assist you on your placement needs and direct you to immigration experts and lawyers for your employment based applications.

It is not much anymore a case of the dog-eat-dog society, today. Everyone seems to be working on compromises, thus everyone has a share of everything – of benefits and sacrifices.

Crises make the “fall”, hope yields to chance, actions initiate change; and determination makes one invincible.

To schedule a free consultation here in Los Angeles,

Suiting Up with the Right Attitude towards Victory

CSI Professionals Inc on Job Seeking during Recession

Recession has been apparent everywhere. More ironically, just recently, the State’s workers assigned to process jobless assistance claims and appeals were ordered to go on temporary leave of absence to save money. (and this does not have that much impact) The recession in the US has started a chain reaction that caused government agencies to be stricter, and businesses to adjust and adapt to the economic change.

Optimism, determination and flexibility are the keys to survival in these turbulent times in employment and immigration. Businesses need to explore practical options inorder to have a better chance of surviving.

Recession has taken a toll on companies and employers, and they can no longer afford to pay such high wages or hire people for one specific position. With these necessities, even applicants need to be flexible in order to handle multiple tasks and assume different positions as needed.

The job hunter then needs to be determined and prepared for the “battlefield” at all costs. Applicants looking for sponsorship display an array of attitudes during the process.

Indecisive applicants or the ones lost AT battle tend to rush then withdraw their application ; while the more determined ones deeply rely on their will power to find means to finish what they started. This is also observed in the millions who are hopeful for an immigration reform. There is no definite time as to when the immigration reform will take place, since the law makers are still in discussion on its scope and implementation; BUT the resolution for this issue is in process, with it being “long overdue.”

It is always good to know that you are not alone in this economic struggle and life-changing journey. It has been said that people gather in the midst of crisis –and this is the perfect time to gather all available sources and experts in helping the concerned public in attaining and continuing their life-long battle to economic survival.

As a job-seeking alien, you should be aware of your options and know where to seek assistance from. We, at CSI Professionals, Inc. will assist you on your placement needs and direct you to immigration experts and lawyers for your employment based applications. We are in the same battlefield as yours.

Desvio temporário, My last bike, Ms Mary, H3, Remake, Kani e Game over. Um dos organizadores do evento concordou que faltou maior organização. E prometeu que todas as bandas inscritas receberiam como prêmio a gravação de quinze músicas. Ás 9 da noite, policiais militares encerraram o Multverso.
