Only something that really appeals as an art form to people of my generation, slightly older, is the music video.  A bit pointless in concept the execution these days is pretty much on par, useless “performance” and fashion videos put out by the likes of Rihanna or whoever else is “good” these days.  Better are some artists, creating videos of such quality and concept they’re sometimes better than the songs themselves, or even the artist themselves.  In this issue of Dig, Dug, Damn! you reap the rewards of my deep digging, bringing you what I feel to be the top 25 music videos of all time (in random order).  Then, after, I post some follow-up videos that didn’t make the list (I’m only posting a single video by a band, so some artists would otherwise have multiple entries).  Let’s rock!

Artist: Stabbing Westward Song: Shame

This was one of the most simple decisions on the whole list.  The video has everything from band performance to a virtual breaking of the 4th wall, and the story itself is very devious and fun, tying perfectly into the lyrics.  I love the concept so much, and for when it came out, it’s really ground breaking.  (Directed by Paul Cunningham)

I’d say something about the video but everything in the world that could be said has already been said, and recently.  (Directed by murderer John Landis)

Artist: The Smashing Pumpkins Song: Tonight, Tonight

This is an obligatory selection, and obviously so.  Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, later of Little Miss Sunshine fame, and based on the classic 1902 film Le Voyage Dans la Lune by Georges Méliès, the video is a technological masterpiece and a simplistic dream come true shot entirely with backdrops and a stationary cameras.  PS: The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band ever.

Artist: A-Ha Song: Take On Me

Ripped from the pages of history, this video is every bit successful as it is ambitious, every bit amazing as it is a delight to watch.  The story fit with the song, the animation was excellent, and it should be immediately apparent why this is hailed as one of the best by most every source you can find on the topic.  (Directed by Steve Barron)

Artist: New Order Song: True Faith

An old favorite of mine, New Order are every bit as fresh as ever, and this video was amazing to me as a child.  Honestly, it’s even more intriguing to me now with the strange, almost metaphoric performance art going on all throughout, mostly rhythmically.  If that doesn’t sell you on watching I don’t know what will.  (Directed by Philippe Decouflé)

Artist: Björk Song: Bachelorette

One name: Michel Gondry.  The director of films such as Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep has a way with visuals that is almost like being a puppeteer of humans and a painter of theatrics.  He’s directed many great videos, especially for Björk, and I feel this is the broadest and most impressive of her bunch.  His work appears numerous times on this list.

Artist: Eric Prydz Song: Call On Me

Steve Winwood never sounded so good (probably because he rerecorded his vocals for the Sweedish DJ and producer), and music videos have never been so sexy.  Eric Prydz hit a high note with the song, and director Huse Monfaradi hit all the correct notes with the visual, making something fun, energetic, and envelope pushing.  I mean, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has gone on record about it, that’s how scandalous it is.  Oh, and just so you know, I really like the red head in the black and yellow top (barely shown) and the blond (pink top) PS: The video has a sequel that is also awesome, which is near the very bottom of this post.

Artist: Aphex Twin Song: Windowlicker

One of the longest, funniest, sexiest, scariest, and strangest music videos ever.  And quite offensive too, first harshly mocking rap and hip-hop culture then paying homage to Michael Jackson and David Lee Roth’s “California Girls”.  I don’t recommend watching this for the first time if you’re intoxicated in any way.  Or is it the other way around?  (Directed by Chris Cunningham)

Artist: Weezer Song: Buddy Holly

As if it needs saying, Spike Jonze is a brilliant man.  This video was a favorite in my teens for the retro motif in visuals and lyrics, the fun and boppy nature of it all, and for being such a seamless insertion into, of all things, Happy Days.  The Fonz makes everything cooler.

Artist: The Foo Fighters Song: Everlong

Michel Gondry, again, makes an entry on this list, this time with vanilla flavored musical act The Foo Fighters, in what is one of their best songs and, by far, their best video.  The video makes little to no sense, like, what kind of drugs were they on, why the huge hand, why two men in an implied heterosexual relationship, where did the nunchucks appear from?  The list goes on, but it’s such an awesome video regardless.

Artist: God Lives Underwater Song: From Your Mouth

This is probably the only video on the list that will make you hungry.  I didn’t think about that when I chose it, but now it’s extra earned it’s spot because these things don’t usually inspire the munchies.  I very much enjoy some God Lives Underwater so when the video was released I didn’t need any additional info.  I didn’t know how great it’d be, watching an Asian attack a personal buffet in reverse, then having the band there, just looking cool and stuff.  If I were in a band I’d do a similar gimmick.  (Directed by Roman Coppola)

Artist: Röyksopp Song: Remind Me

It’s kinda scary how well the song and video go together, the main chorus and the beautiful and simplistic dissection of every day life.  Like being reminded, it’s the most basic component of a complex machine or system that becomes glaring, and multiple viewings of this video will prove different each time, different aspects of the animation and the items within standing out, a mathematical equation, almost, proving the lyrics true.  (Directed by H5)

Artist: Toni Basil Song: Hey Mickey

Directed and choreographed by who is in my eyes the original riotgrrrl, Toni Basil herself, the song is infectious and the video is iconic with the plain faced, average bodied cheerleaders and an incredibly upbeat tune for a song that is basically a huge middle finger to the titular Mickey.  I’m not going to lie to you- I find the video sexy, and I find old school Toni one of the most delicious curiosities ever.

Artist: No Doubt Song: New

While it’s not particularly deep or telling, No Doubt’s video for their entry on the Go soundtrack is one of the best “party” atmosphere videos ever.  I do prefer more difficult concepts as a starting point, but it sometimes says something in not being slightly new or different but in taking something as old as dust and improving upon it, breathing a new life into something established.  Gwen Stefani looked awesome as hell here, too.  (Directed by Jake Scott)

Artist: Skinny Puppy Song: Pro-Test

This was a struggle to pick for the list as there are lots of greats out there, but, like the Aphex Twin entry, this takes stereotypes and stands them on their heads, and I’m a huge fan of both stereotypes and standing them on their heads.  The concept is simple, the dance moves are, for all practical purposes, impossible, and message is clear: People dressing differently than you doesn’t mean they don’t have the same, exact interests.  (Directed by William Morrison)

Artist: The Cardigans Song: My Favorite Game

This video puts a smile on my face, and for more reasons than Nina Persson and her many exquisite qualities.  The song is great and the devil may care attitude of the video is refreshing, all others being about caring bunches and tons.  The humor is unexpected, as is the rock, car crashes, and crumpled bodies, and I don’t care who you are or what your name is, those things inspire a chuckle or two.  (Directed by Jonas Akerlund)

Artist: The Prodigy Song: Smack My Bitch Up

Like the last video this one is directed by Jonas Akerlund, but is the much more disturbed older sister with truly no concept of sanity or safety.  It took a a risk with the disgusting nature, first person POV, and quick, manic cuts, but the song matching intensity, vivid colors, and phenomenal twist at the end send this vid to the stratosphere, and does so with a APB out on it and a sexy, sexy partner in the bed with it.

Artist: Pat Benatar Song: Love Is A Battlefield

Another classic video, another I first became acquainted with as a child (I would only ever watch Nickelodeon and MTV) and loved for the story telling aspect mixed with the obvious cheese that comes with being from the year 1984, which creates a teen angst rock opera so irresistible you’ll want to shake your cans at a scummy pimp the next time you see one.  (Directed by Bob Giraldi)

Artist: Fiona Apple Song: Criminal

Scandalous for no reason other than low amounts of brain activity in the general public, what is actually just a sensual and cool video had an unrequested but welcome intensity tacked on it, and though being good a great video does not make, add Fiona herself with the sultry vocals and fantastic song (the whole album is killer) debuting herself to the world, and yes, this video is tops.  PS: I’d like to exhaust her with my sex.  (Directed by Mark Romanek)

Artist: Metronomy Song: A Thing For Me

How did it take so long for this to happen?  Yes, put the lyrics on screen.  Yes, help us keep rhythm.  Yes, make visual jokes with it.  I adore this video, the cute girls in the video, the clever shots, the awesome song, and everything about it.  I’m not too hot on much else the band has done, but like how it takes only 1 thing to tear something down, it sometimes takes only 1 thing to build something up.  (Directed by Megaforce)

Artist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs Song: Maps

A real work of art, director Patrick Daughters did the smartest thing humanly possible for a struggling band, and that is make the most basic video possible while still being visually interesting.  No special effects, no random story, no quick cuts to make the band look as cool as possible, nothing!  It is just 2 dudes and a chick on a stage, playing a song.  They’re not even moving around erratically or trying to be fashionable with their instruments, because it’s always easier to add than it is to take away, and where the simple  nature of the video leaves the song bum rushes in and really paints the canvas here.

Artist: Kissing Tigers Song: So Stay In Love

I would honestly be shocked if anyone reading this has ever seen this video, or even heard of the band for that matter!  Well, they’re an excellent band and the video is endearing and adorable and yes, it’s great.  The reveal at the end is awesome, I think, and while it’s not the first time a band has made a cameo in their video by playing a show at some juncture in the tale, I think this video took a budget and got 5x the quality as another band or director would have.  (Directed by Jeycob Carlson)

Artist: DJ Shadow Song: Six Days

Beautiful, seductive, and trippy, this video is more than just a sampler of director Wong Kar Wai’s prowess.  In fact, this is probably the only video on the list that could be swapped out for another, because the lyrics of the song wrapped in the “Love Is A Battlefield” visuals lends quite well to Pat Benatar.  Really, though, what a gorgoeous and fitting motif for the song, and my how lovely everything looks!  Also, Bruce Lee quotes?  Yes.

Artist: Lisa Loeb Song: Stay (I Missed You)

The face, the body, the glasses!  Yeah, my main girl Lisa may seem like a pop culture blip on many less discerning radars out there, but in reality she is an amazing performer second to her being an amazing song writer.  This video in it’s single shot brilliance feels more like a diary entry than an invitation inside the desolate apartment, but once there the end result is the same- you’re smitten as hell, and happy to be so.  (Directed by Ethan Hawke)

Artist: Jamiroquai Song: Virtual Insanity

“What the h. is wrong with you?!” I ask anyone who doesn’t think this video is as amazing and groundbreaking as it obviously is.  I mean, maybe you don’t like the song, okay, but the technology of the room being walked about is both deceptively simple and stunningly pretty, and at the core of things that’s really what you want in the visual companion to a piece called “Virtual Insanity”.  I know I’m not wrong.  “Ground breaking” is the first two words I’d use, and my third would be “Jealous!”  (Directed by Jonathan Glazer )

O Hummer assombrou o mundo na primeira guerra do Golf, nos anos 90. Foi considerado a reinvenção do Jeep, que ajudou os aliados a ganhar a Segundo Guerra Mundial.

Mais tarde a GM lançou três versões do Hummer para o uso civil. No começo até fez suceso, mas depois com o aumento do preço do petróleo e a defesa de carros mais ecológicos fez as vendas cairem drasticamente.

A Hummer acabou vendida para a fabricante chinesa Tengzhong e este ano as vendas dispencaram. Até agora somente 8.500 unidades foram vendidas, uma diminuição de 64% em relação a 2008.

Porém, os chineses não entraram no negócio para perder dinheiro e querem voltar ao nivel de 25 mil carros vendidos já em 2010. O novo chefe da marca, Jim Taylor, revelou ao Automotive News que em três anos a Hummer irá lançar os novos H4 e H5.

O H4, será baseado no conceito HX  e suas dimensões serão semelhantes as de um Wrangler. Já o H5 deverá ser um pequeno utilitário esportivo para brigar com o Freelander, da Land Rover. Como eu disse antes, os chineses não entraram no negócio para perder dinheiro.

Low pathogenic avian influenza (H5) in ducks confirmed on 13 November 2009. The outbreak occured on a farm in Saint Aubin du Plain, Saint Aubin du Plain, DEUX-SÈVRES, France.

A total of 9,000 birds were affected. They consisted of 3 batches with 3,000 ducks ready to be force-fed aged 3 weeks, 7 weeks and 17 weeks. Animals did not show clinical signs of infection.

The ducks were culled. Cleaning and disinfection measures and a 21-day sanitation process will be applied. Newly introduced birds will be monitored during 21 days following their introduction into the farm.

The outbreak was identified through active surveillance for avian influenza in breeding farms and a report was made to OIE.

Logorama c’est à peu de choses près, l’exacte opposé du Zéro Logo décrit par Naomi Klein. Un monde INTÉGRALEMENT constitué de logos!
6 ans de recherche pour créer 16min de film? Oui mais pas seulement, les créateurs ont souhaité donner une véritable personnalité à chaque logo. Par exemple les “policiers” sont représentés par des Bibendum Michelin et les “écoliers” par des bonhommes Bic etc.

Le collectif H5 déjà l’auteur de nombreux clips (Alex Gopher, Massive Attack, Röyksopp…), et d’expos (Nuit Blanche 2007, Beaubourg, MoMA…) réalise donc ici son premier film d’animation. Récompensé au Festival de Cannes(award: Prix Découverte Kodak), Logorama sera diffusé au Musée des Arts Décoratifs le 29/10/09.

Hawaii Habitat for Humanity is extremely excited to begin preparations for this year’s  Homelessness Awareness Week, from Sunday November 15th to Saturday November 21st.  There are going to be several events throughout the week engaging the community, raising awareness, and reaching out to the homeless in Hawaii.

Hawaii’s Homelessness Awareness Week will kick-off on November 10th, with a Cardboard City Camp Out over on the Capitol lawn.  The public is welcome to bring their own cardboard box and gain a better understanding of what it is like for a homeless person to sleep at night outside, without a bed, all while at high risk of personal injury or robbery.  Although the night seeks to raise awareness about serious issues plaguing the community, it will also have a positive side by including food vendors and a movie screening of The Pursuit of Happyness, starring Will Smith and his son, Jaden.

Barely 48 hours after suspending all Hindraf coordinators, the outlawed movement’s exiled leader P Waythamoorthy has now been forced to defend his decision.

His move to clarify the suspension came about following a deepening rift between London-based Waythamoorthy and the movement’s grassroots leaders and supporters who were fighting for the cause here.

It is also learnt that Waythamoorthy’s clarification was as much as to assuage the bruised egos of the suspended coordinators, which included some opposition parliamentarians and well-known rights activists.

“A complete revamp and restructure is needed to face the new challenges (for Hindraf),” Waythamoorthy told Malaysiakini today in explaining his decision to suspend the coordinators.

He said that his original intention to suspend the coordinators has been “misinterpreted and misunderstood by certain segment of the public”.

“They read it as though we are replacing our coordinators. This is not the case as it is merely a restructuring exercise,” he added.

And he went on to further explain the need for such an exercise.

Changes needed to remain relevant

He said that the original 10-member committee was set up towards the end of 2007 to oversee the movement’s campaign in fighting for the rights of the Indian community and to demand for the release of Hindraf leaders held under the Internal Security Act in December 2007.

By then Waythamoorthy had also left the country to spearhead the movement from London.

However, he added, those appointed to the position of coordinators have now moved on to undertake other key responsibilities which were far more challenging with the increased needs of the society.

He gave the examples of M Manoharan (Teluk Intan) and S Manikavasagam (Kapar) (right) who have since become parliamentarians for the opposition.

He said that another coordinator N Surendran had been forced to take up all legal matters involving Hindraf as all other Hindraf legal advisors were under the ISA detention.

And as for the movement’s national coordinator RS Thanenthiran, Waythamoorthy said the former has since indicated that he was serious about forming his own political party.

“As chairperson of Hindraf, I can state that the valuable and sound advice, support and contribution from the aforesaid politicians, members of parliament and legal advisor have been vital in spearheading our struggle.

“The continuous support from them would only strengthen the movement’s direction in fulfilling the demands of the Indian community,” he added.

However, he said that the expectations and aspirations of the Indian community were beyond the original demands and Hindraf needed to keep up with the needs and changes to be relevant.

“In these circumstances, a complete revamp and restructuring is needed to face the new challenges. The new structure would be announced in the next few days,” he said.

Grumble in the ground

On Friday, Waythamoorthy dropped a bombshell by announcing the suspension of the movement’s 10 state and national coordinators with immediate effect. He replaced them with a three-person interim committee.

Among those dropped from the line-up included the movement’s top coordinator Thanenthiran (left) who had been helming the group locally while Waythamoorthy was in self-imposed exile.

Waythamoorthy also placed a gag order on the dropped coordinators.

The coordinators, while publicly have stated that they accepted Waythamoorthy’s decision, have privately expressed their disappointment with the move.

It is learnt that some of them were caught unaware by their suspension, leaving them embarrassed in having to explain the situation to their supporters.

These coordinators have played a pivotal role in keeping the Hindraf movement alive and relevant, including successfully turning the Indian voters to support the opposition in the 2008 general election.

However, there have been complaints recently that the movement and some of its coordinators have become politically ambitious.

Who is Waythamoorthy?

Waythamoorthy’s decision to suspend the coordinators also did not go down well with some Hindraf supporters who had turned against the movement’s leader by questioning his judgement.

And highlighting the widening rift in the movement, leading Tamil daily Malaysia Nanban today carried a headline which asked ‘Who is Waythamoorthy?’

The daily quoted some grassroots supporters questioning Waythamoorthy’s decision to remain overseas while faulting the local coordinators.

“He should have been here fighting with us for our cause rather than issuing statements from overseas,” they said.

Disponible dans toutes les bonnes librairies, This Is The End, Cover Art by H5 est une rétrospective de 100 pochettes de disques réalisées par le collectif entre 1996 et 2008. Le livre est accompagné d’un titre original Ash Sync produit par Air, Alex Gopher et Etienne de Crécy pour l’occasion, sur support vinyle. Un bel objet, en somme.

Rates have dropped about 20% since the beginning of the year. Sublease space affects asking rents, because subleases are typically priced about 15% below market and provide potential tenant furniture, wiring etc which limits their out of pocket expenses. As stated below, how much sublease space hits the market definitely provides a pulse of how businesses in the area are fairing and is a good indicator of future rent drops.

San Francisco tenants unloaded another 250,000 square feet of unwanted office space onto the market in January, as employers slashed
workers and pushed to generate sorely needed cash by subleasing floors in Class A downtown towers.

Companies adding to the avalanche of available sublease space include Charles Schwab, which said Jan. 30 that it would cut 500 to 600
jobs in the first quarter. Schwab is seeking a subtenant for 80,000 square feet at the 1 Montgomery Tower. Also in that building, Thomas
Weisel Partners Group is looking to sublease 20,000 square feet on the 35th floor, billed as a “high-end build out with panoramic
views.” Other chunks of sublease space coming available include 15,639 square feet of brand-new space at the just completed 555 Mission
St. being subleased for $48 a square foot by law firm DLA Piper, and the entire 22nd floor of 345 California St., former UBS space that
Cushman & Wakefield is looking to lease for five years at a rock-bottom $27 a square foot.

The onslaught of new leasing opportunities for tenants is depressing leasing rates, according to Studley, a tenant representative
brokerage. After years when average Class A space hovered around $50 a square foot, $40 a square foot is becoming the new “high water
mark” with $30s the “norm,” and some top-quality sublease dipping into the $20s. Studley says the central business district could see
another 1 million to 2 million square feet of sublease space on the market this year, added to the 1.2 million that came on in the second
half of 2008.

“I can’t imagine things getting markedly better this year,” said Steve Barker, an executive vice president at Studley.

Unemployment up
The number of unemployed San Francisco residents grew by 10,300 in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 29,500, according to Ted Egan, chief
economist for the City of San Francisco. In spite of the fourth-quarter increase, Egan pointed out that the 10,000 jobs eliminated during
the final three months of 2008 came in dribs and drabs rather than the sort of en masse layoffs announced in recent days by Charles
Schwab and Macy’s, which announced 1,400 San Francisco layoffs on Feb. 1. A loss of 2 million square feet of occupied space equals about
10,000 workers.

“Now we are starting to see major layoffs from major employers,” said Egan. “This is the sign of the recession coming to San Francisco.”
Daniel Cressman, an executive vice president with Grubb & Ellis, said the overall sublease activity pales in comparison to the last
downturn of 2001 and 2002, when 6 million square feet of space hit the central business district. Still, he expects several more quarters of
negative absorption, which occurs when more companies are giving up space that leasing it.

“For the commercial real estate community, sublease space is the canary in the coal mine that tells you the general health of the San
Francisco economy,” said Cressman. “Things are not great right now, but they are not that bad.”

Leading the group of firms cutting their footprints are financial services firms and banks, including UBS, Citigroup, Thomas Weisel,
Bank of America and Charles Schwab. The other top group is law firms, which have given up some 500,000 square feet of space. Failed
firms Heller Ehrman and Thelen Reid accounted for 350,000 square feet at 333 Bush St. and 101 Second St. combined. Meanwhile, other
law firms expected to join the hunt for subtenants include Dewey & LeBoeuf, which announced plans Feb. 3 to close its San Francisco
office at One Embarcadero Center.

Thus far, San Francisco tech companies have been mostly absent from the sublease parade, although H5, a company that provides
information retrieval for the legal industry, recently put a floor up for sublease at 71 Stevenson St. And brokers say Slide will put the
fourth floor of 301 Brannan St. on the market shortly, asking in the low $30’s for an 18-to-24-month term.

Anton Qiu of TRI Commercial, who leases 71 Stevenson, characterized the space H5 is seeking to sublet as an “expansion floor” and said
he is not concerned.

“We are 99 percent leased, and all our tenants are doing well and have long-term leases,” he said. “Obviously, we don’t like to see it, but
overall H5 is doing well.”

Much of the damage is yet to come, according to brokers. A Macy’s spokesman said it would probably be months before it figured out
what to do with its San Francisco offices, which includes 100,000 square feet at 22 Fourth St. Macys.com, which inked a 70,000-squarefoot
expansion at 685 market St. in 2008, was not included in the Macy’s layoffs, the spokesman said. Scott Harper of Colliers
International, who leases 685 Market St. for owner Prudential, said the Macys.com expansion just closed in December.

“We don’t think it’s going to impact our space at 685 Market, but we don’t know for sure,” said Harper.

Charles Schwab CEO Walter Bettinger said Jan. 30 that the company expects “with almost certainty” another round of layoffs this year.
“We are taking a balanced approach to the near term and the long term and we’re simply not going to allow ourselves to become
uncompetitive,” Bettinger said.

The new subleases are creating opportunities for tenants looking for swank offices already built out with sleek furniture and wired for the
latest technology. Many of the chunks of sublease space available are in San Francisco’s best buildings, including Four Embarcadero
Center, 101 California St., 555 California St. and Tishman Speyer’s new highrise at 555 Mission St.

“There are plenty of options out there for high-end sublease space in trophy buildings,” said Barker. “Off the top of your head you can
name eight or 10 of them.”

The trend does not bode well for landlords attempting to lease out shell space. Barker said no tenants are interested in “funding a buildout.”
“There are too many built-out options to consider,” he said.

Despite the lower costs, deals are few and far between. Studley Executive Vice President Kevin Brennan said many building owners have
yet to lower prices enough to make deals happen.

“As the landlord community starts to capitulate, you’ll see more transaction velocity,” said Brennan. “As of now, they have not capitulated
yet.”
