The last five days have been exciting and busy.  On the Fourth of July, we visited Pearl Harbor where Allison, Anthony, and I got personalized autographs and pictures of the survivors.  Later that evening we ate dinner at the Hard Rock Café and then went to the beach to see the fireworks – they were amazing!  Navigating and locating places on the map is Nick’s thing so he has officially been named the navigator of our trip.  We don’t know what we would do without him!  Riding the waves is what Brandon, Patrick, and Anthony did on day eight when the group went to a Waterpark.  It was entertaining to watch the boys surf, smile, and yell our names while on one of the rides.

Building a home for a family in need is what H6 is currently working on with Habitat for Humanity.  Brielle really got into this and was assisting with putting up walls, hammering, and nailing the boards.  The group enthusiastically worked with Mick and the other site managers to ensure that the house was being built properly.  We are working side by side with the brother of the sister that owns the house.  Our trip members were pumped to see their accomplishments.  They actually put a wall up!  Mick was so proud of the group that he gave us t-shirts and aprons as souvenirs.

Hiking was the next adventure which was an amazing experience to get to see Diamond Head.  Many pictures were taken to capture the moment.  It was the most picturesque view so far this summer.  Later that day we spent time at a beach and then got to meet our newest addition to the family, JP.  We are thrilled to have him with us.  After eating dinner at a Greek Restaurant, the group went in teams of five to Glow in the Dark Mini Putt. Sporting glow in the dark pins and bracelets allowed for a festive feeling.   Scoring a significant amount of points, Jenna was able to take the lead in her team and surpassed the rest of the group.  Gabby was right behind her in second. 

Our group grows closer and closer and we cannot believe it has been 11 days already.  Rachel mentioned that she feels like we have known each other for a lifetime.  Maui here we come for more service and more fun!

Aloha from Hawaii Community Service Hawaii,

I cannot believe it is already day 7!  Time flies when you are having fun!  On Thursday, July 3 we had the most amazing experience going to a transition house for families that are recovering from homelessness, alcoholism, and drug abuse.  Our morning started off with greetings from the families and their children and leighing us with a Mahalo, meaning, “thanks for visiting us”.  We actually had real leighs that they made for us!!  Two teenagers that live at the shelter home recited a Hawaiian prayer while we held hands with the families.  We toured the facility and were shown where these once homeless people now live.  I think it set in when we began hearing first hand how these people used to live day to day.  Brielle C. interacted with three girls during our visit.  She ended up exchanging her email so they could Facebook each other. At the end of our visit, the shelter home gave us lunch and sang Happy Birthday to Teddy while presenting him with cake and ice cream.  We celebrated his Birthday one more time! 

After we left the shelter we went to a beach that was suggested by Junya, the President of the home.  Junya told us to look as we drove along the beaches to see where he lived for five months.  Lena M. mentioned that she will never look at a beach the same way again as she saw the amount of families huddled together under a tent, which they consider their home. 

 Community service gets no more direct than the visit we experienced at the shelter on Thursday. To reflect upon our experience, we spent the remainder of the day at the beach while Teddy S., Brandon D., Oliver M., Anthony S., and Nick L. rode the waves and played sports in the ocean with Patrick our Tour Leader.  To conclude our beach visit, we had the students reflect on their service through a journal that they each received.  It was then that we, as a group, realized that Hawaii is so much more than fun, sun, and beaches.

Hawaii Community Service sends an update from the islands!

Day One – Greetings! Our 12 trip members were excited when we met them at the airport with leighs and an “Aloha”. Energy surrounded the group immediately and everyone seemed excited! It’s only Day Four and we are having the most amazing time. We are a small family and spend most of our time together.  On day two we were able to go catamaran sailing which was relaxing. We also took silly pictures and hung out at the beach.  Dinner was at Chili’s where our company director, Mitch, pretended it was his birthday and we all shared a bit of his “Birthday Sundae”.  On Day three we began our community service with Boys and Girls Club and our trip members became counselors.  The children at the club fell in love with us right away! Please see below to understand just how amazing our service experience has been.

Anecdotes on our Campers:

Anthony- He also has a good head on his shoulders. He kids around and makes everyone laugh.  He should definitely become an actor and he started to agree.

Nick- It was amazing to see Nick run to the kids once we arrived at the Boys and Girls Club. They absolutely adored him!

Teddy- Thursday was Teddy’s his birthday. We made a homemade card for him and decorated our “hangout lounge” with Happy Birthday banners. 

Jenna- While at the Boys and Girls Club she was able to get many kids to open up to her. Her ability to have the kids open up to her in a matter of a few hours was remarkable.

Our group is looking forward to our last day with the Boys and Girls Club. Stay tuned for further updates on Trip H6!

We just received an update from our Hawaii Community Service program, Hawaii Community Service. They have been working with the Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu. Yesterday, nearly 70 kids, ages 6 to 12, welcomed our students with opens arms. Within seconds, everyone was integrated. Together, we were line dancing most memorably doing the macarena!  From there, they went into a fierce dodge ball game and next to arts and crafts.

In the afternoon, our students ran a 1 hour rotation consisting of all kinds of games including a highly competitive rock paper scissors tournament. By the end of the day some incredible friendships were made. Lala, the coordinator of the club was thrilled as were the staff and students on H6!

We have also heard from California Community Service that together with Habitat for Humanity they have been able to install aluminum siding on a house.

Hopefully, our next update will be from Alaska where they are in the midst of planning the Great Alaskan Bake Sale!

“the dramatist responsible for the largest share of those plays, Shakespeare, recognized that wherever the personal destiny of an heroic man night lie, he also could be understood, and desperately needed to be understood, as a more restrictively “historical” phenomenon” (13)

He’s talking about the individual will of the “hero,” but it also applies to Henry’s problem, in that he thinks of himself as primarily a private individual and resists thinking about himself as a “historical phenomenon.”

“For Shakespeare’s plays embody a kind of sequel to Marlowe’s [Tamburlane plays], an assessment of the chaos that ensues when the weakling son succeeds the all-conquering father. [...] At the conclusion of 2 Henry VI and in the opening acts of 3 Henry VI Young Clifford and York’s son Richard finally reduce the incentives of personal and family honor to the naked and uncontrolled lust for blood revenge that is symbolized by the slaughter of the helpless infants Rutland and Prince Henry. Beyond these barbarities lies the remainder of 3 Henry VI, in which even the network of loyalties sustained by family ties is so fragmented and exploited as to leave the last word with the Machiavellian Duke of Glouchester: “I am myself alone” (V.vi.83)” (98-99).

“In effect, these plays keep saying that the received ideals of heroic greatness may be admirable in themselves, but they invariably decay, engender destructive violence and deadly rivalries, and, in the process, make chaos out of history. They lead to anarchy because the notions of “honor” that regulate the heroic life can never be securely realized within any stable, historical form of national life. The problem disappears only in some mythical past,when the feudal subordination of the noble to his king is united with the martial subordination of the lieutenant to his commander [...] it can never be realized in the present” (99)

But what happens, especially with Suffolk and the pirates, is that these ideals go wrong when they filter down into the non-honorable classes. So what’s cast here as “mythic” is also heavily invested in the class-distinctions necessary to throw ideas of aristocratic “honor” into relief–it is, in part, a negative definition, set against “common” ideas of justice and right. This should also tie into Talbot’s horror of the marketplace.

A reading of Talbot’s tomb to Salisbury (108-09), might be useful.

Discussing York as figure for the diminishment of the heroic ideal:

“A phrase such as “who’d not buy thee dear,” [2HVI V.i.5] which recalls the commercial imagery of York’s first soliloquy, reminds us that his sense of his own worth is limited by his preoccupation with material rewards, and that he cannot imagine what the real cost of his actions will be” (123).

Works into Edward’s shift toward a commercial vocabulary for both rule and revenge.

“The very different image of heroic character that is to predominate in 3 Henry VI is already apparent in the first few lines of the play, which, like the second scene of Macbeth, probe the uncertain boundaries that divide acts of war from crimes of blood” (128)

“If the play [3HVI] is to be seen as anything more than a nihilistic bloodbath of tragedy and revenge, it is necessary to keep in mind the vision of aristocratic ideals and public order that makes the implicit contrast to these “reversals.” For the transition from 2 Henry VI to 3 Henry VI marks the dramatist’s continuing discovery of an historical process that followed naturally from the extension of heroic ideals into Tudor politics. An analysis of aristocratic corruption portends the rise of a new “prince,” one who still identifies himself with the traditional values of hereditary nobility, strength, and courage, although he presses his claims with an unexampled show of ruthlessness and cunning. He offers the hope of a return to a nobler age; but the very act of violence that brings about his accession foreshadows the utter dissolution of all aristocratic values and social obligations until, finally, the torrent of revenge and civil war gives rise to a new Machiavel, and a last parody of heroic virtu” (129-130).

“As in 2 Henry VI, only on a universal scale, the public status and obligations of these characters are measured against the increasingly dubious claims of their personal ideals. Familial honor, hitherto a counterweight to uncontrolled ambition and reckless personal ideals, now becomes the source of new atrocities. The sundering of honor and politics is nowhere more apparent than in this play [3HVI], where every attempt to invoke a political compromise is frustrated by the demand for personal revenge, until one finally arrives at the hollow pretense of”country’s peace and brothers’ loves” (V.vii.36) that concludes the action even as it foreshadows the frauds and fratricides of  Richard III” (132).

Something doesn’t work here–familial honor is the basis for atrocities (or at least revenge) throughout all three plays. The “hollow pretense” that marks the end is only possible because everyone’s dead on the other side. The revenge cycle has been worked out properly here, as all involved on the Lancaster side are dead.

“It is the repentant “Son that hath kill’d his father“(II.v.54 S.D.) and “Father that hath kill’d his son” (78 S.D.) who epitomize the chaos that results when personal revenges are projected into the arena of history. Here the public role of each figure (the Son was “press’d forth” by the king, the Father fights on the Yorkist side) fades into utter insignificance before the magnitude of the family tragedy. And, at the same time, the futility of seeking retribution for the “crimes” of war is implicit in the very situation: these bereaved mothers will “ne’er be satisfied” (II.v.106). [...]The tragic perception of the Son and Father depends, of course, upon the unique irony of their situation. Had father met father, the episode might have become a simple restatement of the main plot, in which the sons find their revenges by destroying one another. [...] For Clifford and Margaret, Richard and his brothers, a public act of violence against any member of the family can only be construed as a personal crime, to be revenged by what Othello would call an “honorable murder”" (132-33)

I can’t see how revenge produces this kind of chaos, as even in this play it follows a clear pattern that Riggs himself alludes to at the end of this passage. Also, I’m not sure revenge would be available, on a social level, to the Father/Son pairs, even if it were practically possible. Clifford especially claims revenge as a social privilege. Apart from the impossible fantasy that history is never prompted by the personal, this overlooks the structure of revenge that must be followed by the revenger. The logic of attachment, equivalence, and substitution cannot be dismissed by the revenger once the machinery is started. Chaos and accident may surround the revenger and are a necessary consequence of civil war, but all the revenges in Pt. 3 work according to an inescapable logic that is presented again and again. Also, if its “logic” is a “general metaphor for civil war” (135), how is it chaos and anarchy here and elsewhere?

“As an historical revenge play, 3 Henry VI finds its operative conceptions ofhuman character in the set topics of rhetorical invective” (133)

Aha! So it is a revenge play! Why is this a throwaway line, then?

“Like all these plays [ST, Soliman and Perseda], 3 Henry VI uses the materials of Senecan revenge tragedy to create an ambience in which the heroic pursuit of honor is released from the pieties that ordinarily regulate even bloodshed and violence. In so far as the play that results is one where dukes, princes, and king are slaughtered without regard to their high political status, it is apparent that the logic of the revenge play is being used as a kind of general metaphor for civil war, andthe individual miscreants are, accordingly, judged with far greater severity in this play than in the more psychological dramas of Seneca and Kyd” (134-35)

What? How are they judged more harshly? Some get to live, and Edward even gets to be king! Also, they’re not killed “without regard for their status,” they’re killed exactly because of their status and famililal connections. This seems a misreading of both revenge and this play as history. Could be useful in the introduction to brace my argument against.

“3 Henry VI pictures human history as the visible effect of uncontrolled revenge and cynical Machiavellian ambition, a final anarchic distortion of heroic ideals” (138)

If history is the result of revenge, how can it possibly be anarchic? A pattern clearly emerges in  3HVI, and that pattern is indeed that of revenge. There’s no chaos or anarchy (except, perhaps in the battle scenes, but even those are interlaced with scenes of direct, personal revenge, which gives a shape and structure to the chaos of war).

“King of the Hill: Ritual and Play in the Shaping of 3 Henry VI,” Naomi Conn Liebler. Shakespeare’s English Histories: A Quest for Form and Genre, ed. John W. Velz (Binghamton, N.Y. : Medieval & Renaissance Texts & Studies, 1996).

“Interrogation of the providential theme has dominated criticism of this tetralogy throughout its critical history, and indeed it is difficult to avoid it. Examining the form of this play, however, as an entity in itself that speaks cognitively to its audience of whatever political or interpretive persuasion, offers a meditation of the play’s providentialist/Machiavellian images. Much of the action in 3 Henry VI is attributed by the characters to personalities and personal behaviors, present or ancestral;it may be impossible to determine whether these personalities behave as they do because “Providence” made them that way or because history is seen as the story of human actions played out in a “revenger’s” pattern of thrust and riposte” (35, italics hers).

This page also has an extensive note on the critical history of this providentialist reading. So, what’s the difference between the characters ascribing actions to revenge impulses and readers/critics ascribing those actions in the same way?

This section also makes clear how unstable the political scene of all the plays is. So, unstable political scene, unstable motives, with only the force of history to stablize the structure?

Reads York’s torment in I.iv as “the most powerful moment of formalized play in 3 Henry VI” (40).

“It is a moment of ‘play’ for several reasons: it is a debased and perverted imitation of a coronation, and she is “playing” with him cruelly for her own amusement”(40).

It’s also a dramatic scene, played for an audience (Clifford and Northumberland, obviously, but also the messenger in the next scene, who describes himself as a “looker-on”).

She goes on to read the ritual symbols of the scene (the handkerchief, smearing York with blood).
