There was a song that caught my ears while I was watching the latest episode of a TV series and somehow, it became a pretty special song to me. It’s about the amazing emotions you feel when you’re crazily in love with someone. It’s titled “This Is Beautiful” by a musician named Tyrone Wells. A part of the lyric goes like this:

I never could have seen, never could have seen this coming. The most amazing things, they arrive within a moment. I never could have seen, never could have seen this coming on. This is beautiful. Unmistakable. Unforgettable.

Ever felt overwhelmed when you meet someone who sort of… Takes your breath away somehow? I’ve had one or two encounters like that and honestly, you feel like you’re in some dream, some fantasy – a fantastic dream. Which brings me to another track on my current playlist. It’s titled “Sea Breeze”. I kind of like the way the lyric talks about the sea, because I love watching the tides come in. I could sit at the breakwaters at East Coast Park just passing the day away. And I actually take a day off to do that every year (for a couple of years now) on a certain date.  It’ll be great if I can just find someone who relates to me like this song, finding each other just by watching the waves.

But today, I want to share with you another track by the same musician. This one is pretty popular – I think – and it’s called “Wondering Where You Are”. I’ve been having random serious thoughts about my future love for about a week now. And this is really apt. Cheers to all the single men and women out there, well done. Let’s go on preserving ourselves for that someone special, yup. Sometimes you’ll feel lonely but it’ll all boil down to one person – Jesus.

One of the perks of being a father that I enjoy the most is having kiddie moments with my own child.  I’m such a kid-at-heart, so dealing with my preschooler son’s cravings isn’t a big deal especially if it concerns his appetite for ice cream….

This is a super outdated post but still nevertheless gotto be documented coz it’s anniversary celebratioN!… In actual fact, we wondered off to Selegie Road on a Friday night not having much of an idea of what to have; and we’re always like this. Walking down the shophouses along Selegie Road, we finally got ourselves to settle down in an Italian restaurant again! The second year anniversary was very much more thanwell spent with the extraordinary cusinary skills of Chef Roberto at Garbaldi. It seems like we have gotten hooked to Italian…..

Have seen this place (and its other outlets a couple of time) but have never patronised it personally. Giving it a try; of coz not holding high expectations that it can ever be comparable to Garbaldi! – coz that would deemed many Italian restaurants a failure….

The place had a relatively warm interiors and kinda artsy with the bricks & portrait walls…

Alla Pastora – Aglio Oglio with Bacon & Mushrooms

I am a sucker for Aglio Oglio; can’t seem to not order them each time I see them on the menu since say about 1 year ago? The essence of the garlic somehow just makes me feel satisfied and happy!

But the surprise is all in this Risotto! Resembling what we had in Serenity, the gravy was nicely blended into the rice grains of the dish. The gravy was amazing and the highlight is honestly not in the seafoods that came with it… I highly highly recommend this!! Vampy made a good choice once again!

This week NWF’s twitter feed has been busy as a bee– for the bees! All because Häagen-Dazs® teamed up with Twitcause and challenged twitter users to tweet #helphoneybees.  For a dollar a tweet –the hashtag, #helphoneybees, will benefit bee research ($1,000 dollar limit each day).  We’ve been helping them reach their goal while also spreading the word through social media sites because of the importance of research.

Below is a neat show of how many people tweeted the link to our wildlife promise blog as well as how many people tweeted with the hashtag! Very cool to see people rallying for the bees!

Segunda de Finados fomos ao evento  Zombie Walk 2009 (http://www.zombiewalk.2fear.com), diferente dos outros anos de chuva, estava um super sol e muito calor. Fiquei com vontade de dar uma paradinha no McDonald´s e tomar um sorvetinho mas como a caminhada já havia começado o Pepino me disse para deixar para mais tarde que ele iria me levar na Häagen Dazs para comermos o meu tão esperado Fondue (faz mais de 3 anos que estou esperando!). Ok, não pensei duas vezes!
Chegando lá, havia fila do lado de fora mas era só para pegar e sair, conseguimos um lugarzinho no andar de cima.

Batata:

Nem vimos direito o cardápio e partimos logo para o pedido, o Fondue. Acompanhado com o chocolate derretido, levemente amargo, vieram algumas frutas (maçã, kiwi, banana e abacaxi), pedacinhos de brownie, cookies e 16 bolinhas de sorvete (4 de Strawberry, 4 de Vanilla, 4 de Cookies and Cream, 4 de Belgian Chocolate).
O chocolate derretido estava bom e não era enjoativo. Achei que faltou morango e eles podiam substituir os cookies e brownies por waffles ou algo mais neutro, ficou muito doce. As bolinhas de sorvete foram embora rapidamente para não derreter.

Estava bom porém não justifica o preço. Sou apaixonada pela Häagen Dazs mas não pretendo pedir novamente o Fondue. Prefiro comprar o Fondue pronto Du Jour, o melhor que eu já comi, comprar as frutas que eu quero e fazer em casa.
O serviço foi um pouco demorado, talvez devido ao movimento no dia mas os atendentes foram simpáticos e prestativos.

Guess where my family and I spent our Thursday afternoon?

            The world’s best ice cream + priceless family bonding moment = absolute bliss !

I got an invitation to attend Haagen-Dazs branch Opening at Robinson’s Place Manila.  How can you resist such wonderful event ?  How can you say no to such luxurious indulgence ?

Haagen-Dazs continues to allow Pinoys to enjoy the world’s creamiest ice cream by opening a new branch at the ground floor of the Midtown Wing of Robinson’s Place Manila.  The set up of the new shop boasts not only of Italian designed furnitures, freezers and dipping cabinets but moreso of those remarkably delicious ice cream flavors.  

The well-organized occasion started with a simple yet satisfying cocktail party by TGI Fridays…

I only had a plate; kept my cravings in control and left more gastric space for those dense velvety ice cream!

They initially served Haagen-Dazs Dark Chocolate Orange cups. It’s a perfect sweet ending to a stimulating quick bites and a wonderful prelude to the program.

Unlike the other press launches, the event forego of  the usual fashion show and whatnot; it was made more special by having short three-act show by 3 gorgeous models.  The play was about 3 different women living in the same building with a common search for an inspiration.

A young, hip and edgy had been stuck with nothing to complete her lyrics for a song until she was totally inspired by a tub of Haagen-Dazs

Then there was a damsel who got troubled by her boyfriend over the phone who eventually found solace in a tall glass of that irresistible delight

Who would not agree that Haagen-Dazs is such a perfect partner to celebrate success of whatever magnitude?  This was also depicted in the last scene wherein a yuppie got her promotion at work.  She immediately called her friends to share her happiness expressed in cones and cups of  Haagen-Dazs ice cream.

Any shop inauguration is never complete without that ceremonial ribbon-cutting.  And I don’t think there’s anyone more appropriate to to do such act but United States Ambassador to the Philippines, Hon. Kristie Kenney.

FYI, I follow her blog; check my sidebar on the right -I even commented on some of her previous posts. You could just imagine how thrilled we were to have attended this event with her. She’s so wonderful up close. She smiled and smiled sincerely. She simply radiated and represented effortlessly not only her country but everybody who loves ice cream!  We liked her most when she said that everyone she left at the embassy was so jealous of her attending Haagen-Dazs Opening .

Ambassador Kenney was graciously assisted by Haagen-Dazs-Philippines General Manager, Ms. Tess Panganiban and Robinsons Land Corporation Business Unit General Manager, Mr. Cornelio Mapa.

They also had that ceremonial scoop wearing those HD head caps and enjoyed Macadamia and Chocolate flavored yummies.

When we were ushered back to the lobby, these great tempting treats were served generously…

CHOCOLATE TEMPTATION is one of Haagen-Dazs’ Christmas menu. It’ served with pretzel sticks on top of two butter cookies, layered with scoops of DARK CHOCOLATE ORANGE, MIDNIGHT COOKIES and CREAM, BELGIAN CHOCOLATE, CAPPUCCINO TRUFFLE and TIRAMISU, garnished with almond bits and cherries. 

That’s sinfully delicious.

CHOCOLATE CHRISTMAS SPIRE : consists of scoops of BELGIAN CHOCOLATE and DARK CHOCOLATE ORANGE ICE CREAM, served on top of a layer of COOKIES and CREAM ice cream and warm BROWNIE CAKE.

What a divine creation from Haagen-Dazs! Truly, impeccable…I, my wife and our kid just love it!  

Indeed, it was another glorious fun-filled family activity for us! We’re definitely coming back for more!!!

And did I already tell you that we went home with press kits + freebies too?

Haagen-Dazs is not only the world’s best ice cream;  it’s such an experience!

This is probably the most difficult article I’ve ever written for GSM. Why?

This makes me so uncomfortable...

Because I hate bees. I HATE them. I used to leave classrooms because of them, I hide behind people because of them, and I stare with paranoia into soda cans when drinking them outside, because of this stripy little insect.  I won’t go into the real details of this phobia, however (we’ll just cite an overly dramatic 90s TV show about anaphylactic shock, and a little bug chasing food into my mouth), because they need help.

There are many types of bees: bumblebees, yellow jackets, wasps, carpenter bees, honeybees, and hornets (I don’t like any of them). But the most biologically important of this crew is the honeybee, Apis mellifera. The list of crops they pollinate is astounding – fruits, veggies, and plants as essential as onions, mustard, watermelon…even coffee! (Clearly coming at this from an American perspective, HA). One estimate I read said every one in three bites of our food would not be possible without a pollinator like the honeybee.  (This is also due to the fact that they pollinate the food our livestock consume, but that’s a whole other green issue).

Honeybee & Milk Thistle

The global population of honeybees is being affected by something known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). It sounds like the plot of some insect thriller flick! Honeybees might have a colony with somewhere between ten and fifty thousand bees – and they all at once up and leave, never to return. And there aren’t even any dead bee bodies left around by the hive (insert evil laughter). We don’t have definite answers as to why this happens, but it probably is a combination of some of the following: insect diseases, malnutrition, pesticides, genetically modified (GM) crops, other environmental stressors or even cell-phone radiation. I’m envisioning a honeybee version of I Am Legend.

Varroa mites seem to be one of the most likely culprits of the die-off thus far (and they’re ugly as hell): “These are parasites that attack hives and suck out the honeybees fluids, leaving them weak and prone to infections”  (www.honeybeesite.info). Now THAT is a movie I’d watch under a pillow. Yuck.

 Beekeepers began reporting the loss of hundreds of thousand of their bees in 2006, but they may not have all fallen victim to CCD. During the winter of 2008-09, 28.6% of honeybees were reported lost, with 15% being attributed to CCD (vanEngelsdorp, Hayes, & Pettis 2009).

Fortunately, a Science Daily article gives us a promising look at the future of our food, with an antibiotic called flumagillin.  It seemed to allow for the recovery of a hive infected by CCD, but I can’t find much follow up research on the drug. Does it work long-term, does it create other issues, and is it readily available for most bee-keepers? Other than that, many websites recommend purchasing your honey (which will become increasingly expensive) from local famer’s markets. Plant lots of flowers (like alliums, mints, most beans, and daisy-shaped flowers) that will keep them well-fed. And for the extremist among you (or just the US Presidents among you)… keep your own hive!

Bees have also been gaining some corporate sponsorships from Haagen Dazs and Burt’s Bees. Sorry, bees. I don’t love you anymore than I did this morning. But I’ll keep hiding, and let you live.

Another dreary day and I’m still in a good mood.  Weird.  Spent the day at home doing all the admin work that keeps Howe To Eat a going concern.  Got in some writing, too, as well as some cooking and a whole lot of cleaning.  Had friends coming over, so I had to (had to) vacuum, dust, tidy up, take out the recycling, clean the bathroom…  I oughta do that more often.  All of it:  from having friends over to cleaning the bathroom.  I really should do all of that more often.

Breakfast:  lemon water; oats, almonds, apple, cinnamon, kale, water; chai.  Slice and stir:  4 minutes.

Lunch:  nettle tea; earl grey tea; apples with almond butter; cornbread with butter; cucumber with dulse; water.  Slice, spread, sprinkle:  7 minutes.  What amI, four years old?  This lunch was quite simply a finger food indulgence.  I’ve had apples with almond butter on my mind for days.

Dinner:  white bean and kale soup; cornbread with butter; mixed greens with roasted shallot and tarragon vinaigrette; water.  The soup came out really well and was ridiculously easy:  saute garlic and onion in olive oil, pour in vegetable stock, tear up some kale and toss it in, simmer for 20 minutes, puree four cans of white beans and stir that in, add enough water to fill up the pot and low heat until your friends are ready to eat.  I was so glad it’s been rainy and gross, it was perfect soup weather.

Dessert:  berry cobbler and Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream; tension tamer tea.  Kate brought a delightfully comforting cobbler and we ate it all gone.

LONDON – Häagen-Dazs will tonight unveil a TV ad filmed at the Kiev opera house, which shows a couple sharing a tender moment at a performance of ‘Swan Lake’, the brand’s first campaign for four years.

The ad comes as part of a wider rebrand for the ice-cream, which focuses on the experience of sharing with someone special.

The new ‘Melt Together’ strapline aims to position the brand as an initiator of moments of closeness.

Ed Culf, marketing director at General Mills, said: “We’re very excited to announce the launch of our new advert.

“Melt Together aims to capture that true moment of closeness between a couple and show how Häagen-Dazs can make those moments extra special.”

Just some quick recommendations tonight on some of the products I’ve been loving lately. All of these were purchased on my own – nothing was given to me by the companies (probably goes without saying but passing along given the recent FCC news ).

First up is Pacific Natural Foods‘ iced coffee line. I recently bought both the latte and mocha but have had just the mocha so far. For under $3 the product is great. It’s the same as or less than what you’d pay per day at a coffee shop and just as good (if not better!). Nice blend of chocolate and coffee but not too sweet. I found it the perfect thing for a recent “it’s 3 pm and I’m crashing” crisis. OK, so it wasn’t a crisis but you get my drift. Plus, it’s a local company – can’t beat supporting that!

Next up comes the ice cream! Yay! I’ve been seeing ads in my foodie mags for Haagen-Dazs’ new “5″ line and so, of course, had to try it. Luckily, my local Haggens had the line on special this weekend so I picked up some Milk Chocolate. By a wide margin it is one of the best ice creams from the store I’ve had recently. The premise is simple – it’s made with just five ingredients – and apparently is als0 lower in fat (probably partly due to the lack of artificial ingredients – reason enough to buy this stuff). It’s especially yummy if you let it sit on your tongue for a few seconds. Hmm…think I need to go grab some.

Last, but certainly not least, I’m on to the wine and beer! Just a couple to note tonight. Milbrandt Vineyards‘ Riesling is the wine choice to note this round, a purchase made thanks to Haggen’s wine steward. In fact, he spied me holding a different bottle and promptly pointed me away from it! It was a great recommendation. It’s less sweet than some other Rieslings I’ve had, so I would think of it more as a one-or-two glass wine versus a cocktail wine you could spend a lazy afternoon finishing off. It’s another NW wine, which I’m increasingly convinced you can rarely go wrong with. And then to the beer, I enjoyed a Coopers Brewery Sparkling Ale, which is from Australia. I picked it up at Cost Plus as part of their “Beers of the World” collection and it’s one of the better ones I’ve had thus far. Nice, refreshing and not too light or “sparkly,” which you wouldn’t necessarily expect given its namesake. The only thing that would have made this beer better would be if I had been able to enjoy it outside on an 80 degree day:)

Well it looks like it’s already that time of year again – summer’s going fast, nights growing colder, days are getting shorter and, oh yeah – new celebrity sex tapes! My favorite of all the seasons!

Vivid Entertainment today launched a special page on its website featuring content of the gorgeous former Playboy Playmate-of-the-Month turned television actress Shauna Sand-Lamas from the studio’s upcoming hardcore celebrity sex release, Shauna Sand Exposed.

Another ideal weekend day.  There is something to be said for this whole weekend concept – a break, a respite, a chance to renew.  I’m a big advocate.  I highly recommend you treat yourself to two days off in a row.  Today started with sleeping in.  I can’t remember the last time I slept in past 6am.  This morning found me lying abed at 9am.  Decadent.

Breakfast:  lemon water; oats; pears, cinnamon, almond milk, almonds, mache; chai.

un-lunch (not pictured):   My plan for lunch today was to graze the Green Festival.  It’s one of my favorite annual opportunities to gather free samples of chemical-free body products and tasty treats.  There were woefully fewer food samples compared to past years.  Loved the 3404 Phinney Chocolate Bar with bits of toasted buttered bread right in it.  I ate several versions of Cliff bars, tried many edible manifestations of hemp and enjoyed quite a bit of tea, but far and away the best offering was from Airlie Center: their chef did a lovely butternut squash with balsamic glaze and microgreens.  So very nice.  And I love the Green Festival for the people watching:  I ran into and got to chat with Robert Egger, Sharon Greenspan, and plenty of friends and colleagues.

Snack:  fro-yo with blackberries, honey and caramel.  It was the most gorgeous day on record, so the walk from the convention center down to TangySweet  was nothing but enjoyable.  Sitting on the steps of the Portrait Gallery, people watching, listening to the “most played” on my iPod and savoring the flavors as they melted and melded was perfectly indulgent.

Snack:  tension tamer tea (not pictured).  Spent a priceless hour chatting with my ex-husband.  So very nice to catch up, to re-connect with a dear friend and be truly grateful for the individual and joint commitment we made two years ago to go our separate ways and not let it get ugly.  We were married for seven years, it’s comforting to know we’re still simpatico.

Dinner:  pork chop; pumpkin chutney; cornbread with butter; kale and green beans; water.  Grill and heat:  15 minutes.  I did the chop on the George Foreman.  The kale and beans are from Graceland Farms, I got so much from them this summer that I’ve got quite a bit in the freezer, ready to use throughout the fall.  The chutney and cornbread were from the freezer, too.

Dessert:  apple pie, vanilla Haagen Dazs; decaf.  Amy’s  makes a nice little apple pie, just heat and eat and I’ve got leftovers for another night.
