<p>First of all, I had no idea that the Yeti was one of the most elusive and mysterious objects in all of science. Surely the human genome is more mysterious. Or perhaps even water on the moon?</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the  <em><a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/nation-and-world/la-sci-hadron1-2009dec01,0,7338976.story">LA Times <span style="font-style:normal;">writes</span></a></em> that scientists in Europe this week made a successful test run of the fabled Large Hadron Collider. The super-futurist particle accelerator is being developed to &#8220;recreate conditions that existed shortly after the Big Bang.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how it works: the Hadron Collider sends two proton beams speeding in opposite directions through a 17-mile circular tunnel located 300 feet underground. When the beams collide at near the speed of light, the collision is expected to generate 14 trillion electron volts.</p>
<p>The <em>LA Times</em> surmises that the invention could &#8220;produce some of the greatest scientific discoveries of the 21st century.&#8221; However, some critics have feared that if it actually works, the universe will implode into a black hole and we&#8217;ll all be vaporized, or something like that.</p>

<p>Quayle also commented on the recent death of a young Canadian chemistry professor who had been studying H1NI and was said to die of the virus. He suggested that his death might be tied into the mysterious deaths of microbiologists and scientists (list) that has been going on for some time. The financial system is ready to be &#8220;crashed on cue,&#8221; and could be replaced by a new monetary currency like the Amero, he warned.</p>
<p>Quayle gave an update on his research into giants, noting that Israel and Egypt have many skeletons of giants, but the U.S. has asked them to hush up the evidence. He also recounted a report of &#8220;cave demons&#8221; in Afghanistan, where a 9ft. tall demon with the face of a woman was said to tear through a military contingent of 10 men. The incident (video clip) was recreated on Animal Planet&#8217;s program Lost Tapes.</p>

Scientists at the Cern research center near Geneva got the Hadron Super Conducting Super Collider working again and have started slinging protons at each other to research the processes at the creation of the universe.  Doomsday scenarios have suggested that the machine could create a black hole which will eat the world &#8211; or at least large parts of Switzerland and France. Acceleratorul Hadron Collider reprezinta cea mai scumpa investitie intr-un proiect de cercetare! Costurile acestui proiect se ridica la peste 10 miliarde euro! Accelaratorul a functionat 4 zile de la prima punere in funciune! Se pare ca au aparut probleme la sistemul de racire care trebuie sa mentina o temperatura constanta de -271 grade celsius. Aceste mare tunel se afla la granita dintre Elvetia si Franta!<br />
Se pare ca marele tunel intampina tot mai multe probleme si foarte multi bani necesita reparatiile acestuia. Un accident bizar si ciudat a fost atunci cand o pasare a patruns in tunel fiind nevoie de oprire a acceleratorului.</p>
<p>Oare o sa poata oamenii de stiinta demonstra aparitia lumii asa? Oare teoria Big Bang-ului este reala? Sa fie DUmnezeu un mit?</p>

Physicists announced they had sent protons all the way round the 27 km ring beneath the France–<a href="http://switzerland.monetiibanknoti.com/">Switzerland</a> border, for the first time since a major failure 14 months ago.<br />
The experiment, the largest of its kind in the world, was first switched on with great fanfare in September 2008, but suffered an electrical fault just nine days later. This caused a leak of ultra-cold liquid helium, resulting in severe damage. Repairs have cost approximately £24 million, on top of the £6 billion spent originally.<br />
Particles were injected into the ring at around 1500 GMT on Friday, and just after 1930 GMT the first completed circuit was confirmed. Further testing is planned for Saturday.<br />
&#8220;We&#8217;ve still got some way to go before physics can begin, but with this milestone we&#8217;re well on the way,&#8221; stated Rolf Heuer, director-general of CERN, the European research group running the collider.<br />
The Large Hadron Collider is designed to smash together particles at almost the speed of light, creating conditions similar to those only moments after the Big Bang. By studying these collisions, scientists hope to shed light on theories such as supersymmetry and the Higgs boson.<br />
Barring further problems, the first collisions are scheduled to take place in January next year</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Last September 2008 I wrote a post about the Large Hadron Collider, which was about to be turned on. Scientists all over the world were very excited since the 17-mile circular tunnel will hurl protons around in opposite directions (near the speed of light) then make them collide with each other.</p>
<p>For some reason the physicists involved believe they will be recreating the special conditions of the early universe during “Big Bang.” If everything goes right, they hope that during their experiments they will be able to discover the Higgs particle (boson). So far, the Higgs particle is only a theoretical particle but proving its existence is critical to current theories concerning the origin of <em>mass</em> in matter.</p>
<p>When they first turned the Hadron Collider on, there was a malfunction. A second malfunction occurred when a bird (they think) somehow dropped a piece of bread into the expensive ($4 billion) apparatus.</p>
<p>Well, the rumor is that the bugs have finally been worked out and the Hadron collider will be turned back on <span style="text-decoration:underline;">tonight.</span> The actual “smashing” of the atomic particles will not take place until February 2010. They are proceeding cautiously.</p>
<p>Many scientists believe that if the experiment ultimately fails to deliver a Higgs particle they will have to return to the drawing table and re-evaluate their current assumptions about physics. So the stakes are high (financially and intellectually).</p>
<p><em>I predict that the experiment will fail to deliver the goods</em>.</p>
<p>I have an alternate theory, which challenges the notion that the physical universe has its origins in a <em>physical</em> principle. I have even written a book, <em>Proving God,</em> to offer evidence that the physical universe has its origins in a <em>spiritual</em> principle.</p>
<p>It is beyond the scope of this blog post to convince you that science and God can be unified. Furthermore, it makes sense to see first what fruits (if any) the Hadron Collider presents to scientists. So I will simply wait patiently for the results this February (or whenever they are released) and get back to you with another post.</p>
<p>If the Hadron Collider is successful in February, you won’t have to concern yourself with my new book, which will be available a month later.</p>
<p>I hope you will keep following this unfolding drama. The question of the origin of the universe is an important one and has profound consequences for our belief systems.</p>

<p><strong> </strong>What occurred within a billionth of a second after the Big Bang? How was our universe actually created? These types of questions have generated a great deal of excitement among the world’s particle physicists and cosmologists for a very long time. The latter question about the origin of our universe has also generated a lot of interest on the part of general public as well. Speculation and explanation as to how the universe was actually created has tended to fall into two categories&#8212;scientific and religious.</p>
<p> These two perspectives may soon cross paths on the road to a final definitive answer of how the universe began. I will explain the fascinating realm of particle physics and the interconnection to religious thought about the origin of the universe from both a scientific and religious perspective. I’m going to put forth my ideas using logic and reasoning power as to what the connection is and try to resolve it. It’s a tall order but someone has to do it. My ideas will come at the end of this Blog. For now, the reader needs a little background on these questions and the scientific approach to answering them.</p>
<p><strong><em>Background</em></strong></p>
<p> Physics is now on the verge (perhaps) of confirming a “Theory of Everything” known as String Theory or M-Theory.  Albert Einstein spent the last thirty years of his life trying to reconcile the physical laws of Quantum Mechanics with General Relativity. It was an attempt to weave together the physics of the very <strong>large</strong> (with concepts like time, space, gravity and huge entities like galaxies, solar systems, and the movement of planets) with the physics underlying of the very <strong>small </strong>(atomic and sub-atomic particles and their motions such as atoms [the smallest unit of any chemical element] and sub-atomic particles [which are the basic indivisible particles of matter, like quarks and leptons]).</p>
<p> As brilliant as Albert Einstein was, he was not successful with bridging quantum mechanics with his theory of general relativity. In addition to understanding a theory of everything are questions important to understanding the origin of our universe. Without getting much into the theoretical background of particle physics, I want to explain to the reader what the scientific questions will be explored with the Hadron Collider.</p>
<p>  It is anticipated that the Hadron Collider will either demonstrate or rule out the existence of the elusive Higgs boson, the last unobserved particle among those predicted by the Standard Model. The particles in the Standard Model make up all the visible matter in the universe. The problem of the Standard Model in physics is threefold: (1) We don’t know if all particles are there, (2) it doesn’t tell one how matter in our universe was created, and (3) the model doesn’t account for gravitation, dark matter, and dark energy.</p>
<p> The God Particle (viewed by some as the Goddamn particle), or more aptly named, Higgs boson, is theorized to have existed in that billionth of a second after the Big Bang and is believed to help most of the particles in the Standard Model obtain their mass at that time. This gets complicated real quick because wave-particles like photons probably were unaffected by the Higgs boson and simply passed through it at the time of the Big Bang.</p>
<p>The following are some of the important scientific questions to be answered by the Hadron Collider experiment:</p>
<p><strong><em>Scientific Questions </em></strong></p>
<p>Is the Higgs mechanism for generating elementary particle masses in the Standard Model indeed realized in nature? If so, how many Higgs bosons are there, and what are their masses?</p>
<p> Why is gravity so many orders of magnitude weaker than the other three  fundamental forces?</p>
<p> Are electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force just different manifestations of a single unified force, as predicted by various Grand Unification Theories?</p>
<p> Is Supersymmetry realized in nature, implying that the known Standard Model particles have supersymmetric partners?</p>
<p> Are there additional sources of quark flavour violation beyond those already predicted within the Standard Model?</p>
<p> Why are there apparent violations of the symmetry between matter and antimatter?</p>
<p> What is the nature of dark matter and dark energy?</p>
<p> Are there extra dimensions, as predicted by various models inspired by string theory, and can we detect them?</p>
<p><strong><em>Now There is a Test</em></strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong>There are efforts that have been underway for some time to answer some of the greatest secrets of our universe. One such effort is known as the Hadron Collider. It is 17 miles in circumference and 570 feet beneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. It was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). It is believed that at the beginning of the universe (in that billionth or trillionth of a second) after the Big Bang Singularity, particle mass was created from energy [remember Einstein’s E = mc<sup>2</sup> which was a beautiful formula for the interconnection of mass and energy]</p>
<p> The Hadron Collider’s importance to science cannot be underestimated. Briefly, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator, intended to collide opposing particle beams of either protons or lead nuclei. The purpose of doing this is to search for the hypothesized Higgs boson, and the large family of new particles predicted by supersymmetry.</p>
<p>In 2008, the LHC was successful for the very first tine in colliding proton beams, but was halted due to a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets. Due to repair time the LHC is scheduled to come back online in mid-November 2009. The scientific world is looking forward to the results of the LHC experiment.</p>
<p> But readers need to know&#8212;what does all this mean? Why is it important? If you want to explore this on your own I recommend the following book: <strong><em>The God Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?</em></strong> This book was written by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon M. Lederman and science writer Dick Terisi.<em> </em></p>
<p>The LHC will try to create the Higgs boson again by shooting protons at each other traveling at near the speed of light [approximately 11,000 times around the 17-mile collider in just one second]. The results will be spectacular even if the Higgs boson is not confirmed. Steven Hawking is betting that it doesn’t exist. Non findings would be significant because it means, according to Hawking that, “I think it will be much more exciting if we don’t find the Higgs. That will show something is wrong, and we need to think again….. If the LHC does find supersymmetry, this would be one of the greatest achievements in the history of theoretical physics.” Hawking also has said, “It would also be a key confirmation of string theory.”   </p>
<p> As mentioned at the top of this Blog, there are two basic perspectives on the origin of the universe, one scientific and the other religious. Two subjects modern day physicists haven’t spoken of in relation to the Hadron Collider (but are very much aware of them) has to do with the possible existence of a mutiverse, i.e., a large bubble or sea of universes (trillions upon trillions upon trillions of them with no limit) and consistent with such a notion as a multiverse is the concept of <strong>forever</strong>.</p>
<p>Whenever I’ve tried to conceptualize these two ideas (multiverse and forever)&#8212;it has raised goose bumps on my spine. The Hadron Collider is an impressive step forward among particle physicists and cosmologists in their ability to understand our universe. But what I’m going to discuss now is the concept of forever, and what, if anything, a religious perspective can contribute to our understanding of forever as a concept. These are my original ideas.    </p>
<p><strong><em>Exploring Hypotheses Regarding God and the Universe</em></strong></p>
<p><em> </em>Karen Armstrong described in her book, <em>The History of God,</em> how the concept of God changed over time in biblical scriptures. God changes in meaning over time because man’s relationship to a God changes over time. One of the biggest changes enacted by religious followers of Christianity occurred in the Fourth Century (325 C.E.) when the bizarre concept of the Trinity was created to settle the question of Christ’s humanness versus his alleged divinity.</p>
<p>This profound change in the ‘divinity’ status of Christ paralleled many of the changes that occurred among the pantheon of polytheistic Gods that people worshipped in the ancient world. Pagan religions and Christianity were very similar in creating anthropomorphic images of themselves and the God(s).  The many gods of paganism and polytheism attributed human characteristics to their gods; by contrast, Christianity attributed human characteristics (male gender, emotions like love, anger, jealousy and rage) to their monotheistic God. If God is unknowable or incomprehensible then how did the writers of the Bible attribute so many human characteristics to God?</p>
<p> But Christianity took it one step further and made a man of human flesh and blood into a god when the concept of the Trinity was created. These changes were all about images that were very much anthropomorphic. The idea that God is <strong><em>not </em></strong>because He transcends all being was never considered by the Christian traditional perspective.</p>
<p>It is said in many locations throughout the Bible that man was created in the image of God. What was meant by this? The idea of image was not something new to the ancient world in which Christianity developed. Many of the images that arose in connection from the many Gods of Paganism (polytheism) were of animals, or the sun or the planets.</p>
<p> Christianity attributed a one creator God of the Universe with purely human characteristics. This Christian act is only one step beyond polytheism. By doing this, man essentially was placing himself at the center of his <em>own</em> universe. At that moment&#8212; mankind took ownership of the universe. Not wanting to appear egotistical, he substituted himself with the term God, which is the embodiment of man himself.</p>
<p> By creating an externalized image and calling it God, man could use that idea to make sense and order out of man’s existence. He could following this then make sense and order out of the universe. Ancient peoples desire to make sense of the universe parallels modern day scientists desire who also want to make sense of the universe. It is an enviable goal&#8212;but religion and science  just do it differently. Religion is all about <strong><em>Mythos</em></strong> and the attribution of meaning, and Science is all about <em><strong>Logos</strong>,</em> a search for rational explanations, based on facts, theories, and  real world observation and data collection on maturalistic phenomena. As explanations go, science in the modern era is now in the driver&#8217;s seat. Religion, and religious explanations (natural theology) is a passenger in the back seat.</p>
<p> Scientific theories of the universe, and their extraordinary complexity, all point to the possible eventual comprehensibility of our universe. There exist the possibility that our universe had no beginning and will have no end and that the laws of physics resulted in a self-contained universe.</p>
<p>Despite its eventual darkness and infinite expansion, it will go on forever. To say that something always existed and will always exist is to cause goose bumps on one’s spine. This occurs because man has difficulty fathoming the concept of infinity or “forever.” It is a “mind-boggling” concept.</p>
<p>The concept is difficult to fathom because our everyday experiences on this earth run counter to it. That is, everything we see, hear and experience in everyday life has a beginning and an end. The seasons come and the seasons go. People are born, live their lives, and then they die. There is nothing very sentimental about reality in that regard. However, the concept of <em>forever</em> is extremely difficult to grasp. The idea that something always existed is equally troubling. Why? Because it is certain that such a concept of forever is indeed outside our everyday experience.</p>
<p>M-Theory and String Theory suggests the possibility that perhaps there are trillions upon trillions of other universes all with their own big bangs and singularities that occurred. Or, perhaps the laws of physics differ from universe to universe, meaning their creation occurred in some other way.</p>
<p>If you can imagine for a moment the idea that the future will go on forever, and that the past “goes back” forever, one is confronting the impossible task of understanding the past from the future, but also by default trying to understand what the concept of   “present” really means in that context. If there is, as Albert Einstein suggested, a space-time continuum where neither space nor time are separate entities, then perhaps there was no creation in the first place if one cannot ever separate space from time.</p>
<p>If one remembers their college physics class, then one must remember the Law of Conservation of Energy. That is, neither matter nor energy can be created or destroyed. They are the same thing. What makes them different is that they are simply different forms of the same thing.</p>
<p>If our universe (or any of the other trillions upon trillions of universes) had no beginning and will have no end, and the past goes back forever and the future goes on forever, then that would mean there was no beginning point to any of it. If no beginning point exists (or ever existed), then there is no “creation” or creation point. And if there was no creation or creation point (no beginning and no end) then by definition, there is no need to attribute or invent the need for a supernatural creator. Why? Because there wasn’t a “creation” in the first place that a creator would be needed for. The <em>singularity</em> at the beginning of our inflationary universe may have come about because a parallel universe rubbed up against another universe, thus initiating the big bang singularity and our universe.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>A bird has pulled off a clever parody of Dan Brown’s interminable yawn-fest Angels and Demons by disabling Cern’s Large Hadron Collider with “a bit of baguette”.</p>
<p>The LHC, for the unenlightened, is a huge particle accelerator housed on the French/Swiss border which scientists hope will unlock the so-called ‘God particle’ and recreate the birth of the universe in miniature.</p>
<p>Astro-physics explained brilliantly, for free. Don’t say I don’t spoil you.</p>
<p>While I don’t know much about unlocking the secrets of the universe (I dropped physics when I was 14), I am fairly sure that the key to the lock isn’t a baguette dropped by a bird.</p>
<p>According to Cern, a bird – still on the wing from authorities – dropped a piece of baguette into the atom-smasher’s outdoor machinery last week and caused a short circuit and untold financial damage.</p>
<p>A spokesman confirmed the bread was “naked and unfilled”, ruling out customers from Subway, and that scientists believed the culprit to be a bird which “had been spotted beforehand near the substation carrying bread.”</p>

<p>In its bid to twist time and prevent scientists from answering the big questions that have plagued mankind since we stopped believing we&#8217;d fall off the edge of the world if we sailed for long enough and that the Earth was the centre of the universe, the bird had made a textbook error.</p>
<p>Everyone is going to notice a bird carrying a baguette. I’d be surprised if grainy footage from a mobile phone doesn’t turn up on You’ve Been Framed – why take the risk when a well-aimed spot of defecation could have done the job just as well, if not better?</p>
<p>Because the machine wasn’t switched on, the baguette damage was collateral rather than cataclysmic. It would be adding insult to injury if in addition to giving us avian flu, birds also created black holes large enough to swallow entire tracts of Europe.</p>
<p>Lunatics and straw-clutching fatalists who believe the world will end in 2012 (when my mortgage is still outstanding? I should be so lucky) have claimed that ‘baguette bird’ is an example of the LHC sabotaging itself from the future.</p>
<p>A bit like smoking when you’ve got a history of heart problems in your family, or drinking 12 cocktails and then telling your best friend&#8217;s husband that you&#8217;ve always wondered what it might be like if he took you from behind.</p>
<p>They believe the frequency of Cern’s accidents is more than a coincidence and that the Higgs Boson, which sounds like the double-barrelled surname of a posh boy at boarding school but is, in fact the particle physicists hope to produce with the LHC might be ‘abhorrent to nature’.</p>
<p>Avid watchers of Doctor Who take note: this means that the creation of the Higgs Boson at some point in the future would ripple backwards through time to put a stop to whatever it was that had created it in the first place.</p>
<p>Let me give you a moment while your brain stops spinning.</p>
<p>Given this science fiction style scenario, you’d hope that the £10 billion LHC would have come up with something better than a baguette carrying bird.</p>
<p>An invisible cyborg teleported into the heart of the machine to wage war against time, perhaps, or a tiny alien robot ant hidden in the mail; anything, in short, than a cack-handed French bird on its way to a picnic.</p>
<p>In addition to our feathered friend, the LHC has been hit by other mishaps, ranging from an explosion during its construction to a malfunction during its first use.</p>
<p>The devout believe it’s God’s way of calling a halt to humans messing with the fabric of time, much in the same way He stopped me from making a circuit in an IT lesson at school because He knew I should never be afforded that kind of power.</p>
<p>Today a circuit that illuminates a fairy light bulb: tomorrow a particle accelerator that can be derailed by a bird and single-handedly wipe out the world&#8217;s supply of Lindt chocolate and Camembert.</p>
<p>Baguettes not withstanding, scientists are planning to fire up the LHC in the near future to see if it can produce the Higgs Boson particle which will open the door to all kinds of other mysteries, such as the origins and nature of dark matter, extra dimensions in space and why Richard Hammond thought that advertisement for Morrisson’s was a good idea.</p>
<p>Frankly, if it can be short-circuited by a bird flying overhead, I’m not holding out too much hope that it’ll give us an answer to the meaning of life any time in the near future.</p>
<p>But if it does, I will refer you all to my post wholeheartedly and enthusiastically supporting the LHC that I wrote in 2036.</p>

<p>A top boffin at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) says that the titanic machine may possibly create or discover previously unimagined scientific phenomena, or &#8220;unknown unknowns&#8221; &#8211; for instance &#8220;an extra dimension&#8221;.</p>
<p>&#8220;Out of this door might come something, or we might send something through it,&#8221; said Sergio Bertolucci, who is Director for Research and Scientific Computing at CERN, briefing reporters including the Reg at CERN HQ earlier this week.</p>
<p>The LHC, built inside a 27-km circular subterranean tunnel deep beneath the Franco-Swiss border outside Geneva, functions like a sort of orbital motorway for extremely high-speed hadrons &#8211; typically either protons or lead ions.</p>
<p>The differences are, firstly, that the streams of particles are moving at velocities within a whisker of light speed &#8211; such that each stream has as much energy in it as a normal car going at 1000mph. Secondly, the beams are arranged in such fashion that the two streams swerve through one another occasionally, which naturally results in huge numbers of incredibly violent head-on collisions.</p>
<p>These collisions are sufficiently violent that they are expected to briefly create conditions similar to those obtaining countless aeons ago, not long after the Big Bang, when the entire universe was still inconceivably small &#8211; it was smaller than a proton for quite some time, seemingly, still with all the stuff that nowadays makes up all the supra-enormity of space and galaxies and so forth packed in somehow.</p>
<p>Naturally, some extremely strange phenomena are to be expected when one mangles the very fabric of space-time itself in this fashion. Various eccentric nutballs have claimed that this would doom humanity in one fashion or another; perhaps converting the entire Earth, everything on it and possibly the rest of the universe too into &#8220;strangelet soup&#8221;, monopole mulligatawny or some other sort of frightful sub-particulate blancmange or custard.</p>
<p>It has also been suggested that cack-handed boffins at the LHC might inadvertently call into being a miniature black hole and carelessly drop this into the centre of the Earth, rather irritatingly causing the planet to implode. It&#8217;s certainly to be hoped that the button marked &#8220;Call Black Hole Into Being&#8221; on the control board has some kind of flip-down cover over it.</p>
<p>Obviously all that&#8217;s utter rubbish. But some boffins have speculated that black holes might alternatively act as spacewarp wormhole portals into alternate universes, or something. This would seem to chime with Bertolucci&#8217;s remarks this week on hyperdimensional &#8220;doors&#8221; out of which might come unspecified &#8220;somethings&#8221;.</p>
<p>Anyone who has watched a TV, read any sci-fi or seen any movies will be well aware that hyperdimensional spacewarp wormhole portals don&#8217;t normally lead to anything boring like empty space, parallel civilisations where humanity lives in peace and harmony or anything like that.</p>
<p><!-- s9ymdb:4342 --><img src="http://justgetthere.us/blog/uploads/collider-dimension.jpg" alt="" width="460" height="278" />Rather, it seems a racing cert that we&#8217;re looking here at an imminent visit from a race of carnivorous dinosaur-men, the superhuman clone hive-legions of some evil genetic queen-empress, infinite polypantheons of dark nega-deities imprisoned for aeons and hungering to feast upon human souls, a parallel-history victorious Nazi globo-Reich or something of that type.</p>
<p>We took the matter up with Dr Mike Lamont, a control-room boffin at the LHC.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re hoping to see supersymmetry and extra dimensions,&#8221; he confirmed.</p>
<p>Pressed on the matter of doors through which something might come, as hinted at by Bertolucci, Lamont rather elliptically said &#8220;well, he&#8217;s a theorist&#8221;, before recommending the book Warped Passages by physicist Lisa Randall. This explores ways in which extra-dimensional space and entities might interact with our own. It uses among others the example of how a sphere moving in 3D space would appear to someone living on a single 2D plane-space &#8211; that is as a mysterious circle suddenly blossoming into existence, growing, perhaps moving about and then shrinking down and vanishing again.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no maths in it,&#8221; added Lamont encouragingly, having assessed the intellectual level of the Reg news team with disconcerting percipience.</p>
<p>Summarising, then, it appears that we might be in for some kind of invasion by spontaneously swelling and shrinking spherical or wheel-shaped creatures &#8211; something on the order of the huge rumbling stone ball from Indiana Jones &#8211; able to move in and out of our plane at will. Soon the cities of humanity will lie in smoking ruins, shattered by the Attack of the Teleporting Juggernaut-tyrants from the Nth Dimension.</p>
<p>Dr Bertolucci later got in touch to confirm that yes indeed, there would be an &#8220;open door&#8221;, but that even with the power of the LHC at his disposal he would only be able to hold it open &#8220;a very tiny lapse of time, 10-26 seconds, [but] during that infinitesimal amount of time we would be able to peer into this open door, either by getting something out of it or sending something into it.</p>
<p>&#8220;Of course,&#8221; adds Bertolucci, &#8220;after this tiny moment the door would again shut, bringing us back to our &#8216;normal&#8217; four dimensional world &#8230; It would be a major leap in our vision of Nature, although of no practcal use (for the time being, at least). And of course [there would be] no risk to the stability of our world.&#8221;</p>
<p>We say: Excellent. Who said the LHC was a waste of money?</p>

<p>MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) &#8211; The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will re-launch its <a href="http://en.beta.rian.ru/trend/collider/" target="_blank">particle accelerator</a>, which has been out of operation since last year, in November, the body&#8217;s director general said.</p>
<p>Experiments using Large Hadron Collider (LHC) were suspended last September shortly after a successful start due to a serious fault between two superconducting magnets and a subsequent helium leak into the tunnel housing the device.</p>
<p>Speaking at a news conference in RIA Novosti on Friday, Rolf-Dieter Heuer said the particle collider would initially run at 3.5 TeV per proton beam, or one-fourth of the projected energy output, &#8220;because it would allow the LHC operators to gain experience of running the machine safely.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added that the device could reach the top energy output of 14 TeV per beam sometime after 2011.</p>
<p>The collider, located 100 meters under the French-Swiss border with a circumference of 27 km, enables scientists to shoot sub-atomic particles round an accelerator ring at almost the speed of light, channeled by powerful fields produced by superconducting magnets.</p>
<p>In order to fire beams of protons round the vast underground circular device, the entire ring must be cooled by liquid helium to minus 271 degrees C, just two degrees above absolute zero.</p>
<p>By colliding particles in front of immensely powerful detectors, scientists hope to detect the Higgs boson, nicknamed the &#8220;God particle,&#8221; which was hypothesized in the 1960s to explain how particles acquire mass. Discovering the particle could explain how matter appeared in the split-second after <a href="http://en.beta.rian.ru/infographics/20081023/117913404.html" target="_blank">the Big Bang</a>.</p>
<p>The international LHC project has involved more than 2,000 physicists from hundreds of universities and laboratories in 34 countries since 1984. Over 700 Russian physicists from 12 research institutes have taken part.</p>
<p>The construction of the collider cost $4.9 billion, while its repairs after the breakdown cost almost $40 mln.</p>

<title><![CDATA[The God particle! Or is it?]]></title>

Since CERN has decided at the beginning of the month that the LHC will run throughout the winter, an otherwise unusual practice because of the high energy consumption, it probably will win the race, or so they hope.</p>
<p>The reason why it is so important to win that race is that the Higgs boson plays a central role in the Standard Model of particle physics, but is the only particle in that same model that is not yet discovered. The discovery of the Higgs-boson would explain the existence of mass in the universe and the distribution of mass among the particles. It sounds like something of an ultimate explanation for the last open questions in physics.</p>
<p>But what happens then? String theorists argue that the smallest entities in the universe are strings which constitute the particles. In their view the Higgs-boson would not be the ultimate explanation. But should not the question be if we can “ultimately” explain something at all? The Higgs-boson is called the God particle. But what do we mean by that? That God has created that particle? That the Higgs-boson is God? That the existence of the particle proves God’s existence? That God is behind the Big Bang? And if it is discovered, does physics as a discipline all of a sudden stops, because everything is now explained. Of course not, is the obvious answer for most. But why is it then called the God particle? What is that supposed to be telling us?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>This one gives me a headache. The <em>New York Times</em> reports that CERN&#8217;s Hadron Collider is scheduled to go back online in December after a series of malfunctions shut it down last year. From the report:</p>
<blockquote><p>Then it will be time to test one of the most bizarre and revolutionary theories in science. I’m not talking about extra dimensions of space-time, dark matter or even black holes that eat the Earth. No, I’m talking about the notion that the troubled collider is being sabotaged by its own future. A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.</p></blockquote>
<p>Come again? The effect that the collider produces will ripple back in time to stop the very effect?</p>
<p>But wait, it gets better. Much better. More:</p>
<blockquote><p>Dr. Nielson said of the theory, “Well, one could even almost say that we have a model for God.” It is their guess, he went on, “that He rather hates Higgs particles, and attempts to avoid them.”This malign influence from the future, they argue, could explain why the United States Superconducting Supercollider, also designed to find the Higgs, was canceled in 1993 after billions of dollars had already been spent, an event so unlikely that Dr. Nielsen calls it an “anti-miracle.”</p></blockquote>
<p>?!? Now they&#8217;re just pulling our leg. Right? Maybe and maybe not.</p>

<p>TRUTH11 Comment</p>
<p>Scientists who scoff and laugh at the possability of the Hadron collider creating a black hole should remember back to the days of nuclear testing done by the US.  The scientists sat on lawn chairs with sunglasses on to watch the explosion. They did not make it.  At least they were the only ones harmed.  If the scientists are wrong again about this one&#8230; it would mean curtains for us all.   They should not continue this line of experimentation.  The risk is too great.</p>

The most important physics experiment in the history of, well, all of history, is slated to take place over the late winter of 2009 and the first few months of 2010. This is when the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/04/science/space/04collide.html">CERN particle collider</a> ramps up to full speed and starts crashing atomic particles into one another at dazzling rates of acceleration, seeking to identify the mass of the so-called &#8216;God particle&#8217;&#8212;itself the source of all mass in the universe. The God particle is otherwise called the Higgs boson particle, and the Higgs boson particle can also be thought of as a field. Physicists are looking to confirm the Higgs boson&#8217;s existence, and trying to get exact measurements of it. Future directions in science and technology will hinge on what they discover, or fail to discover.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not a scientist, but in reading about the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and the energies that it is scheduled to generate in some of its experiments (10 billion times the heat at the core of the sun!!!), isn&#8217;t it just a teensy-weensy bit possible that the physicists know not what they&#8217;re about to do? Stephen Hawking&#8212;among other very, very smart physicists&#8212;has assured the public that the tiny black holes (!!!) that their experiments will generate will quickly dissipate, and there will be no catastrophic effects from clashing particles together at such extraordinary energies. But weren&#8217;t there a lot of very smart scientists in the early 1980s saying that the risk of a space shuttle launch accident was vanishingly small&#8212;and in fact, the tenth launch saw the disintegration of a shuttle, right? And this disintegration was accompanied with the infamous words: &#8220;Go with throttle up.&#8221;</p>

<p>So my question is this: If scientists are not able to predict accurately the probabilities of a space shuttle launch&#8212;a device for which they have detailed knowledge&#8212;how can we be so sure that scientists can estimate accurately the dangers of generating black holes, even very miniscule ones? Black holes, afterall, are things that scientists almost certainly know less about than a space shuttle, isn&#8217;t that correct? I mean, what if Stephen Hawking, in one of his equations, like, forgot to carry the fricken&#8217; 4? &#8220;Oops. Maybe those black holes don&#8217;t dissipate afterall! Never mind!&#8221; But then it will be too late. Might the experiments that CERN begins this winter be another &#8220;Go with throttle up&#8221; moment, but with global implications?</p>

<p>And the energies being generated (again, a billion times hotter than the core of the sun) are akin to what the universe saw a billionth of a second after the Big Bang started (replicating that high energy state is what makes scientists think that the Higgs boson will show up in their experiments). So what makes us think that generating Higgs bosons (the quantum particle-fields that created the universe&#8217;s mass in the first place) won&#8217;t do some weird and unpredictable stuff? Isn&#8217;t this like doing Einstein&#8217;s equation backwards? (Instead of mass split to release energy, high energies are being collided to detect the mass of a Higgs boson.) Going the Einstein way that we&#8217;re familiar with makes a big boom. What makes scientists think that going in the reverse direction won&#8217;t make for a big collapse? Wasn&#8217;t it Hillary Clinton who said, &#8220;You don&#8217;t know how far a frog will jump until you poke it&#8221;?</p>

<p>And Hillary nearly won her campaign and caught Barack in the stretch, didn&#8217;t she? And isn&#8217;t the whole point of a scientific experiment to not just confirm what you think you know, but to be broadsided by something surprising? A scientific experiment is a question you ask of the universe, and the universe returns an answer. So what if the answer is: &#8220;You just started a black hole that will eventually eat your solar system&#8221;? What makes physicists so cocksure that the universe will only return an answer that resides within their already expected range of parameters? I&#8217;m not trying to be antiscientific, nor alarmist. Nor am I a Luddite. I&#8217;m just asking.</p>
<p>My wife likened the experiment to some guy in a lab who says: &#8220;I&#8217;ve got a great idea! Let&#8217;s play with fire! Let&#8217;s dig up body parts from the cemetary, assemble them, and make a man!&#8221; And Mary Shelley, if you&#8217;ll recall, subtitled her novel, <em>Frankenstein</em>, &#8221;The Modern Prometheus.&#8221; Still, this physicist&#8217;s calm explanation of what will happen at CERN, and his reassurances, help:</p>

<p>But I still have questions. The physicist in the video, for example, says that these tiny black holes may not even exist, but if they do, they&#8217;ll dissipate. But how does he know this? Should we just take his word? Is the dissipation something predicted by a particular theoretical model, and are there competing models that suggest that these little black holes don&#8217;t disintegrate? And what, exactly, does he mean to imply by saying that &#8220;it&#8217;s kind of like&#8221; the universe has already conducted the experiment many times, and is already suffused with particles that are moving at higher velocities than those that will be hurling about the track at CERN? This needs a clearer explication. Are these high energy particles in nature colliding with one another, or just passing by one another? Are they attractive or repellent to one another? If they do collide, how often do they collide, and how do we know it? What exactly does he mean by &#8220;kind of like&#8221;? Is it the exact same thing, or not? Or is it something merely analogous? What if he is making an analogy that is actually misleading?</p>
<p>Again, as a lay person, I&#8217;m just asking. Is it a dumb question to ask whether this particular scientific emperor has clothes&#8212;and whether he&#8217;s about to inadvertently fry them off of the rest of us?</p>

Now, however we have two other scientists Holger Bech Nielsen, of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto, suggesting that God may be the reason the large hadron collider in Geneva keeps having problems.</p>
<p>They have suggested that the Higgs boson, the particle that physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be “abhorrent to nature”, and its creation in the future would ripple backwards through time to stop the collider creating it in the first place. Its the application of the time travel conundrum whereby you go back in time to kill your grandfather and thus instantly disappear as you could never have been born, a common thread of the Terminator trilogy of science fiction films. In this case, however, its suggested God is at work not an Austrian body builder. </p>
<p>For those of us with less scientific minds and a more limited intellect such suggestions are baffling. My own question is why would God want to remain an ethereal being? Why would a divine being prefer to be the subject of pure faith and not hard evidence? But, then again, we have recently been told by Dr. Andrew Newberg, neuroscientist and author of &#8216;Why We Believe What We Believe&#8217;, we are “hard wired for faith”.   As the collider hits a temperature lower than outer space and is due to be switched on this November we might just get a answer to the question &#8216;Is there anybody there?&#8217; unless, of course, God does not want us to know the answer.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Expert Physicists Say that the Large Hadron Collider is Safe and Won't Create a Black Hole That Will Swallow the Earth. So How Come Conservatives Aren't Freaked about This?]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Most American conservatives (presumably) follow the expert advice of their family physicians when they are told that, say, they need to see a specialist with regard to a symptom, or need surgery. And they might well go under the knife on the advice of no more than one doctor. But when politics or religion enter the equation, suddenly the consensus of highly trained experts is set under extreme suspicion. Here are just three examples:</p>
<ul>
<li>Evolution. Scientists are as certain as they can reasonably be that the Earth is very old and that plants and animals have changed over time. But lots of conservatives make it a point of pride to simply ignore what geologists and biologists say about such matters, and continue to read Genesis as if it were, well, a science book (and not poetry).</li>
<li>The Greenhouse Effect. Professional climatologists are certain that the amount of energy in the earth&#8217;s atmosphere is increasing, and over the course of the next century this fact will have serious, if not catastrophic, effects upon the Earth&#8217;s climate. Most conservatives yawn.</li>
<li>Swine flu vaccination. Again, experts in virology are universally agreed on this. Get your flu shot. The benefits far outweigh the risks. (Therefore, Rush Limbaugh won&#8217;t be getting his.)</li>
</ul>
<p>Shouldn&#8217;t expert advice on the Large Hadron Collider also be in this category of things that conservatives ignore? Isn&#8217;t it evil socialist and secular Europe and Ivy League elites delivering these soothing &#8220;expert&#8221; pronouncements?</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s curious to me how little attention is being paid to this among American conservatives. Perhaps it is because there is no obvious way to score political points against Barack Obama by doing so. Or maybe conservative are, subconsciously, death worshipers (akin to the mid-20th century Spanish fascists who infamously used as a slogan, &#8220;Viva la morte!&#8221;) and kind of want the end of the world (so that they can go to heaven). </p>
<p>Below is what Wikipedia says about the Large Hadron Collider&#8217;s safety. If conservatives were consistent intellectually, they would express wild alarm about the safety of the collider for exactly the same reasons that they doubt evolution, the greenhouse effect, and the need for vaccination against the swine flu:</p>
<ul>
<li>experts have motives other than pure science;</li>
<li>experts cannot be trusted to tell the truth; and</li>
<li>people, including scientists, are foolish to express themselves too confidently with regard to complex matters (unless there is a verse in the Bible that explicitly supports their expressions of confidence, in which case they can then engage in whatever wild speculation that they want).</li>
</ul>
<p>Here&#8217;s what Wikipedia says about the CERN collider: </p>

<p>The CERN Hadron Collider may soon find out, and Jared Burton directed me to an interesting <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/science/space/13lhc.html?_r=3&#38;pagewanted=all">article</a> about it. (And David Bowie may have gotten there first.)</p>
<p>But in any case, according to the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/13/science/space/13lhc.html?_r=3&#38;pagewanted=all">New York Times</a> yesterday, two prominent physicists have a time travel theory as to why the CERN Hadron Collider is having a bit of a jinxed start: nature abhors not just vacuums, but Higgs bosons, and nature is thus mysteriously reaching back in time to prevent their creation by the new particle collider: </p>
<blockquote><p>A pair of otherwise distinguished physicists [Holger Bech Nielsen, of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and Masao Ninomiya of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics in Kyoto, Japan] have suggested that the hypothesized Higgs boson, which physicists hope to produce with the collider, might be so abhorrent to nature that its creation would ripple backward through time and stop the collider before it could make one, like a time traveler who goes back in time to kill his grandfather.</p></blockquote>
<p>And what is a Higgs boson? According to the article, &#8220;the Higgs is responsible for imbuing other elementary particles with mass.&#8221; In other words, the Higgs is the father (or grandfather) of mass. And so the metaphor (as used in the New York Times article) doesn&#8217;t quite work, does it? It&#8217;s the grandpa of mass (the Higgs boson) stepping back in time to stop its massive children from returning the favor of creation by evoking the Higgs boson. Grandpa Higgs, it seems, wants to stay in the paternal position:</p>
<blockquote><p>“It must be our prediction that all Higgs producing machines shall have bad luck,” Dr. Nielsen said in an e-mail message. In an unpublished essay, Dr. Nielson said of the theory, “Well, one could even almost say that we have a model for God.” It is their guess, he went on, “that He rather hates Higgs particles, and attempts to avoid them.”</p></blockquote>
<p>God? God is preventing something from happening that would be bad for his creation? Hmm. Makes you wonder where he was during the Holocaust. In any case, the article goes on to say that:</p>
<blockquote><p>While it is a paradox to go back in time and kill your grandfather, physicists agree there is no paradox if you go back in time and save him from being hit by a bus. In the case of the Higgs and the collider, it is as if something is going back in time to keep the universe from being hit by a bus. Although just why the Higgs would be a catastrophe is not clear.</p></blockquote>
<p>And they even have a means for testing the theory:</p>
<blockquote><p>Dr. Nielsen and Dr. Ninomiya have proposed a kind of test: that CERN engage in a game of chance, a “card-drawing” exercise using perhaps a random-number generator, in order to discern bad luck from the future. If the outcome was sufficiently unlikely, say drawing the one spade in a deck with 100 million hearts, the machine would either not run at all, or only at low energies unlikely to find the Higgs.</p></blockquote>
<p>Here&#8217;s how the proposed experiment was characterized by a physics editor at <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/shortsharpscience/2009/10/is-a-time-travelling-higgs-sab.html">New Scientist</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>Even more fun is Nielsen and Ninomiya&#8217;s suggestion of how their theory might be tested: with a card game. First, take a million or so cards, each scribbled with a future fate for the LHC. Make them overwhelmingly read &#8220;carry on&#8221;, but add just one or two saying &#8220;shut the thing down&#8221;. If you pull one of the &#8220;shut down&#8221; ones at random, you have pretty good proof that the Higgs is trying to tell you something from the future. I don&#8217;t know what happens if you disobey the warning: perhaps that&#8217;s where the thing with the <a href="http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19926755.800-lhc-scare-stories-were-good-for-science.html">black holes that eat the world come in</a>.</p></blockquote>
<p>Why not just use a Ouija board?</p>
<p>And I just had another thought about this. Are the physicists implying that we (if the quantum wave function does not collapse) are living in a universe in which Higgs particles are not produced (and so destroy our Earth)? In other words, are our consciousnesses following only those universes where there is still, well, ongoing human existence?</p>
<p>Hmm.</p>
<p>Thanks Jared, for the interesting link! I&#8217;m not sure I understand it (in fact, I&#8217;m absolutely certain that I don&#8217;t!), but it is, without a doubt, worth trying to understand.</p>
