This video was made a couple of days ago and was initially just to show Mauku running on the N900. It’s a very simple, fast and easy to use twitter application, getting you to your twitter feed and sending out tweets quickly – respond/retweet and check out other people’s posted links.

Click Downloads

You’ll find Mauku either from “Internet & Networking” category or from “All”

Just click “Mauku”, check “I understand and agree” and “continue” (Another great thing about the N900 and Maemo 5 is that it’s so easy to install an application. No deciding whether to install on Memory card, phone or mass memory, or having to accept certificate after certificate…Click install – Done.)

Whilst it’s fantastic that the N900 can load up websites like your computer does (check out N900 with YouTube – just fantastic!), some sites like twitter.com do need a little work around for mobile and the smaller screen.

Mauku is great for getting your tweets out quickly on the go and interacting with your feeds, but it doesn’t offer the same functionality as Nokia’s favourite Twitter app: Gravity. E.g.

cannot view replies from people you don’t follow

cannot view direct messsages

cannot twitter search

cannot upload photos.

cannot have drafts

I’d love to see Gravity for the N900 or Perhaps another Twitter App, perhaps an updated Mauku or a new one that offers the same functionality as Mauku.

Whilst we wait, because the N900 does have a powerful browser, it can load web clients for twitter. So it’s just a case of how well the site is optimized to be as simple and intuitive a user experience as possible.

Mark Guim from The Nokia Blog showed us Hahlo, which looks great on the N900. It’s one of my desktop bookmarks now.

TwitHive and twitter gadget are a couple more examples.

Do you know a better web client for twitter that’s better than Hahlo?

There are some things I have to say about the websites Hahlo and Twitstat Mobile. I tried both applications early June and both are two-way and difficult to send direct messages with. Direct messages can however be viewed. When I reply to a tweet with Hahlo, the particular tweet does not show what tweet I just replied to. In the timeline all @replies which have been written in another program have a button to show the tweet being replied to. Another annoying thing is that every few hours I have to login again. This application was built for a mobile device. Through their menu it is possible to sent a direct message to another user or even yourself.

Twitstat Mobile was built for a mobile phone too. The timeline shows multiple functions; muting users, showing a conversation between users, showing pictures from TwitPic and MobyPicture, add to favorites, retweet, and reply. There is a whole menu with settings and saved searches. This could be interesting on a mobile phone to use. The function to actually mute users you follow is similar to Twalala. The dialogue function in Twitstat Mobile does not show the conversation between users like Twalala does.

Since I last wrote about Twalala they have developed a new feature; in every @reply there is a new button in the lower right corner of the tweet with ‘Re:’ on it and when selected this shows the conversation between users. Another new feature is the link to the original tweet in a reply made with Twalala, they did not have this feature when I first used it. I tested this before and on June 20th again.

To get to the next level in my thesis I need to use this blog to ask myself more (detailed) question

To get to the next level in my thesis I need to use this blog to ask myself more (detailed) questions, about what experiences of me and other users mean, what could be said about connectivity between users and what are the changes in their communication? What dilemmas are there in following and what does this mean? Why do some users refuse to follow other users and what happens to their connection in real life?

An example of problems with privacy is a user who says on one medium that he or she is busy or has made arrangements with someone, while on another medium (like Twitter) the same user says something different. It is difficult to know who reads a certain tweet and how this will be interpreted. It means that users have to be careful about what they write online and should take other media in consideration. It also means that privacy matters. Some users have a private account and deliberately deny access to certain users, although the users who are being denied access could consider this as an offence because both users have friends in common. The use of Twitter looks so easy as an account is made within a minute but once a user realizes he or she has to be careful what to say. The main question of Twitter ‘what are you doing?’ gets another meaning this way and is not about a certain activity forces the user to think, what can they do online and what should they not do? Friendships can be made on Twitter but also be destroyed because of mis-interpreted words. This is one of the Twitter implications when a user thinks somebody else implies something.

Just to be clear, the stories above are not my own experiences but bits and pieces of stories of people I follow and hear about. Even though an account is set to private, @replies to a private user can still be read through the use of Twitter search or Google. Stories can be verified this way and could add to the image of that private user. Although twitter accounts can be set to private, Twitter is still not a Walled Garden, in the sense that outsiders can still read @replies from other users. Social network sites which are a Walled Garden are more difficult to read without being logged in than Twitter. [...]

In the world of mobile devices, 2008 was the year of the application. Apple’s iTunes and AppSt

In the world of mobile devices, 2008 was the year of the application. Apple’s iTunes and AppStore integration into its popular iPhone made the already popular device much more dynamic, and as a result, much more useful. Never before had it been so easy to purchase and add applications to a mobile device – it’s an innovation that’s quickly become the model for mobile platforms and application distribution.

But its also easy to remove applications – for me personally I’ll bet for every app that’s on my iPhone there’s at least four apps that I’ve installed and removed. Every app and button on my phone has earned it’s place in my mobile life – so I thought it might be useful for me to show you my current iPhone setup, and describe the apps I use.

The Main Screen

This is the screen where I keep all my apps that I access everyday, sometimes multiple times. I haven’t changed that many of the shortcuts that come installed on the main screen – most of the out-of-the-box apps are wonderful. In the near future I’ll probably replace the Notes app with a better notes applications (looking into Evernote right now). Other than the pre-installed apps, (Calendar, Mail, Maps, etc…), I’ve replaced Apple’s Weather app with The Weather Channel’s app, and I’ve added the Facebook app. You’ll also notice bookmarks for meebo and Hahlo 3.

The Weather Channel

While the original Weather app that comes with the iPhone is pretty, this app is far more useful. Not only does it give you the current weather, but it shows you what temperature it “feels like” outside based on humidity and wind (among other things). The feature alone is very useful when deciding what to wear outside or how to dress your kids for the bus stop. Severe weather warnings and watches, radar screens, even video forecasts – anything you can think of that’s weather related is probably in this app. Here are some screen caps:

This is the main screen for The Weather Channel (TWC) app. You can see the “feels like” temperature and the current conditions.

Meebo

The Meebo chat site is one of the best mobile chat applications out there… but I would change this bookmark to an app if I could find an app that did a better job of my remembering mobile chats or notifiying while I’m away.

Meebo and MSN are best friends.

Simply sign on with a supported account (MSN, Yahoo, AOL, Facebook, Jabber, etc) and you’re ready to go!

Hahlo 3

A great Twitter client and another bookmark. Supports twitter messaging and most twitter services – try it, you’ll like it.

Facebook

Since the first iPhone version of the Facebook app, things have really improved and now almost every Facebook interaction you want is available at your fingertips. I’d love to see extended profiles supported, but won’t hold my breath until I see Flash more widely used on the iPhone platform.

Now that’s just funny!.. Hmm I wonder how my location got set to Bowie MD.. I guess that’s what you get when you have people who are geeks & love to stalk you enough that they finally crack your Twitter Password.

This made me smile though, & I kind of enjoy the whole stalking thing. I guess I just enjoy the adrenaline rush. I enjoy that I feel like I’m being watched.. Hahaha! I know but that’s just me, and who I am.

I’m my own kind of normal you could say.

Thanks! Bowie is awfully nice this time of morning..

Enjoy!

Stitchminder – For any craft in which you need to count stitches. Customizable column names, like “increase row” or “pattern row”.

Sunrise – $.99. Spice starts knocking off to sleep right after sunset, so it’s handy to know exactly what time that is, so I can start her evening feed/bath/sleep routine.

WordPress – Blog from your iPhone. Pretty slick overall, but obviously not perfect if I’m still not blogging from it frequently.

Things – $9.99. The ultimate to-do list. Really, I love this one, as it has a Mac desktop app that will soon sync with the iPhone version. Right now, it’s easier to just use the iPhone version for everything.

eReader – Awesome e-book reader. One click download from books purchased on ereader.com or fictionwise.com. No sync needed! Setting white text on a black background is perfect for nighttime reading in bed. (Tip: Try it with one of their free books, like The Age of Innocence.)

NYTimes – Full NY Times articles. What’s neat is that you can organize your preferred sections, like “Politics” or “Photos” in the bottom bar.

Twitterific – Twitter client. Not as full-featured or fast as Hahlo, but Hahlo can’t do pics.

Weatherbug – Extreme weather details. Insanely better than the useless default Weather app. Like radar/satellite views and weathercams.

Evernote – Note-taking program that syncs with website and desktop app. Can be a bit clunky. Neatest trick is being able to take pics that sync to both places automagically, which is useful for blogging later.

NetNewsWire – News reader that syncs with NetNewsWire (OS X) and FeedDemon (Windows) through Newsgator Online so you never read the same thing twice.

eBay Mobile – Track your auctions, whether you’re buying or selling.

Pandora Radio – Incredibly sharp choose-your-own Internet radio.

If you aren’t already using it Twitter is a great way to stay connected with people from all around the Internet. Whether it’s people you know from the “real world” or people you have met online and like to stay in contact with, Twitter offers and excellent (although sometimes troubled) way of socializing.

You can use Twitter from your cellphone via SMS to “tweet” and to receive notifications. I personally prefer using online apps such as Hahlo, from my iPod Touch, but when I’m not in an area with wifi I need to rely on my cellphone.

Here is a handy list of commands that can be used from you mobile device to control what you receive from Twitter.

Where are the Twitter clients for those that don’t to download yet another application? What if you don’t want to worry about software updates, let alone pay to tweet? There’s hope for you yet, and it goes by the name Hahlo.

Optimized for your desktop but most importantly, the mobile web, Hahlo gives you a simple and visually engaging way to interact with your Twitter followers. Hahlo integrates popular twitters features such as twitter search, trends, finding tweeters near you and more. All packaged in an awesome mobile interface for the iPhone and even the Blackberry I found. This is one mobile web client you should check out.

For the privacy nuts, oAuth login is supported, meaning you don’t have to hand over your credentials.

I have to admit, I was definitely a late bloomer when it came to mass, social network usage. I don’t need to explain why that was a mistake on my part. One thing i feel I do need to share is all of the native and web applications I missed out on my iPhone.. until now, of course.

Twitter- everyone told me that one i started i would become addicted… They were dumb.. and I am addicted, and if you do not know what Twitter is…. Well if you have to ask, you don’t wanna know. As far as Twit is concerned, the iPhone has been the BEST mobile solution for being on Twitter 100% of the Day.

-Obviously there is the mobile site (direct mobile Safari to http://twitter.com), and this works fine but there are much more efficient, ways to tweet.

-The best web app, to use twitter on the iPhone, is Hahlo (direct mobile Safari to http://hahlo.com). The great interface, iPhone web application works GREAT. The only thing is, I would say it works about 80% of the time, but there is absolutely no install needed for this.

-One of the two native applications I will mention (which you can download via Installer App) is Twinkle. Twinkle was the first Twitter application i downloaded for my iPhone, and it is awesome. within 1 tweet you will be able to geotag your location, send a picture, and update. It has a great interface with avatars and all, alowing you to do everything you can on the Twitter site. In my eyes the only flaw with this application is it is not all that reliable. Although very intuitive with great UI, 50% percent of the time that i open it, i get that message “we are having some technical difficulties”. I always want to blame it on Twitter, but when i check, Twitter is not down and it is just the poor API app. Great idea, and it is worth a try.

-The last application which I will stand by and say is the absolute best is Mobile Twitter. I actually stumbled upon in it in the list of Installer Apps and decided to try it out. I’m so glad i did. Its fast, has photo support, using camera or photos in your photo album, and lets you do EVERYTHING you need to Twitter-wise, straight on your iPhone. Works amazing with EDGE or Wi-Fi. Not to mention, it has a great UI.

For all other social network sites i would just use the direct site web applications. I have tested them all and they do the job, so for any of the following just go to the URL on mobile Safari (these will also make awesome home screen icons for you if you bookmark):

-Twitter

-Pownce

-SocialThing!

-BrightKite

-Myspace and Facebook (bleh)

-Jake
