The Media Czar Haim Saban an “Israeli-American ” who wields influence to advance Zionist goals.

I found the answer to the question from a Hasbara site, Zionism On The Web, with the usual ‘anti-Semitism’ tag: “Jews control the media (but often adjusted to “Zionists control the media”) is a myth was originally started with the far right, Fascism needed a group to scape goat. The more recent rise of the Zionist control of media myth in the far left is a combination of coding Jews as Zionists or Israel, and a scape goating of Israel for the faults of imperialism (typical British imperialism). This is pushed by Arab groups in an attempt to get favourable press coverage and discredit Israel in the Palestinian-Israel conflict.”

Ironically, the above “myth” was debunked by an Israeli spokeswoman Tzipora Menache, who was reported saying:  ”You know very well, and stupid Americans know equally well, that we control their government, irrespective of who sits in the White House. You see, I know it and you know it that no American president can be in a position to challenge us even if we do the unthinkable. What they (Americans) can do to us? We control the Congress, we control the media, we control showbiz, and we control everything in America. In America you can criticize God, but you cannot criticize Israel….”

Former US Vice-president Spiro Agnew was quoted as saying: “The people who own and manage national impact media are Jewish, and with other influencial Jews, helped create a disastrous Mideast policy….. Our policy in the Middle East to my judgement is disastrous, because it’s not even handed. I see no reason why nearly half of the foreign aid this country has to give goes to Israel, except for the influence of this Zionist Lobby. I think the power of the news media is in the hands of a few people. It’s not a subject to control of the voters, it’s subject only to the whim of the board of directors….”

There is no denying to the fact that the mainstream media in the US, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Australia, Austria, etc. is all owned or controlled by the Zionist Jews and their pro-Israeli friends. According to a research article published by PakAlert on March 16, 2009 – six Jewish companies own 96% of the world\’s media. In Canada, 60% of media is owned by the CanWest, a pro-Israel Zionist Jew family.

According to Thomas Sparks British media is totally controlled by the Zionist Jews. French Jewish population is less than 600,000 out of total population of 58 million (French Muslim population is over six millions), but with help of its control over politicians and press – the Jewish Lobby was able to drag French comedian Dieudonne to court on May 5, 2009 on the charges of anti-Semitism against him for his awarding a prize to Dr. Robert Faurisson (he doesn’t believe in the Gas Chambers theory of the holocaust) on December 29, 2008, at the Paris Zenith concert hall.

Bernard Madoff who swindled US$50 billion of public money (most of the money was transfered into Israeli banks) was defended by several mainstream media outlets while Anti-Defamation League (ADL) called Madoff’s critics as “anti-Semites”.

After they left office U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and CIA director William Casey sat on the board of major media like New York Times, Los Angeles Times, NBC and CBS. In such a climate, intimidation and co-optation are inevitable.

Media super star Walter Cronkite, who ended his evening newscast with the famous phrase “and that’s the way it is,” admitted upon retirement that it wasn’t so. “My lips have been kind of buttoned for almost twenty years … CBS News doesn’t really believe in commentary.”

Finally, the best description of our corrupt media culture comes from an address that American journalist John Swinton gave to his fellow journalists:

“There is no such thing in America as an independent press… You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dares write his honest opinions, and if you did you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper… any of you who would be so foolish as to write his honest opinions would be out on the street looking for another job… We are the tools and vassals of rich men behind the scenes… Our talents, our possibilities, and our lives are all the property of other men. Haim Saban is reportedly interested in purchasing 50% of the Arabic news network Al Jazzera. Talks between the company and Saban are ongoing.

Have you heard that an Israeli-American billionaire is going to buy a fifty percent stake in Al Jazeera? Well, it’s probably not true.

The story is everywhere. It goes like this: Haim Saban, an Egyptian-born Israeli-American billionaire, who is the creator of Power Rangers and the Saban Center at the Brookings Institution, is going to buy up to fifty percent of the Qatari news network.

Haaretz is covering it, as are other reputable Middle Eastern newspapers. The blogosphere is abuzz with talk about the potential purchase. But I encourage everyone to take a close look at the news stories about the deal.

What evidence do any of the stories offer? It was reported in the independent online Egyptian newspaper El-Masryoon. Anything else? No. No comments from Saban. No comments from Al Jazeera. No off-the-record comments from the supposed Egyptian intermediary. In fact, the story isn’t even being reported in any other local newspapers.

I hate to say it, but just because something is published in an Egyptian newspaper doesn’t make it true. A post on Mondoweiss said today, “Mondoweiss couldn’t make this up. What Zionist control of the media?” But actually, someone else could have made it up very easily and probably did.

I think it’s pretty unlikely that the Qataris would sell a huge portion of the most-watched news network in the Arab world to an Israeli. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Saban’s ownership would seriously undermine Al Jazeera’s credibility with its viewers. Doha, of course, knows this.

So let’s just stop, take a deep breath, think this through, and try not to repeat rumors as fact.

The Mossad, the Zionist spy network similar to our CIA, has a global network of media contacts which their Department of Psychological Warfare uses. Mossad’s motto is ” By way of deception, thou shalt do War.” The Department of Psychological Warfare’s task is to feed their media contacts “background” – read disinformation and lies, that will help discredit and destroy the Palestinians and Arab nations that support them, and elicit sympathy for Israel’s elimination of Palestinians. A second task of that department is to prepare information for the press attaches at Israeli embassies. Their purpose there is the same. Below are two examples of Mossad’s many attempts at media disinformation in the United States. In 1996, TWA flight 800 crashed off Long Island. 230 people died. Mossad contacted their world-wide media contacts stating that the crash was a terrorist act perpetrated by Iraq and Iran. This was another Israeli lie. The FBI spent a half million dollars and ten thousand man hours following all these Zionist lies. It determined that Iran and Iraq had nothing to do with this plane crash, the disinformation was a Mossad plant, and that the crash of TWA 800 was not a terrorist act. James Kallstron, the FBI agent in charge of the investigation said: “If there was way to nail those bastards in Tel Aviv, for time wasting, I sure would like to see it happen. We had to check every item they slipped into the media.” Of course, by the time the FBI report came out, many Americans and others had mentally registered the disinformation as truth and damage was done to our relations with Iraq and Iran. The bomb attack at the Atlanta Olympic Games provided another opportunity for a Zionist plot in this country and throughout the world. Again, Mossad’s media contacts world-wide were given information that the way the bomb was made had the signature of Palestinian terrorists from Lebanon’s Bekka Valley. Another lie. The bomb was the work of a lone American, a security guard, with no international or terrorist connections. These are examples of what we American taxpayers are paying for when we give Israel billions of dollars a year.

VII. Studies of Pro-Israel Media Bias in Newspapers

The results of Jewish ownership of so much American and world media, their presence on editorial boards, and their proclivity to scream and yell anytime the media reports anything which they perceive as negative about Israel or positive about Palestine is the basis of a study done by If Americans Knew, a nonprofit organization whose goal is to educate Americans about the billions of dollars of our tax money that goes to support Israel and its policy of ethnic cleansing. Below is a link to their study of the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury. The study demonstrates the outlandish, pro Israel bent of both papers. Both papers are more a grocery store tabloid than a respectable journalistic endeavor. The sad thing is that any similar study of any major American newspaper would produce the same results. How quickly we forget. With the Inquisition still fresh in memory, America’s Founders embraced democracy as a means to protect liberty from the manipulations of faith. That’s why facts were enshrined at the core of self-governance grounded in the rule of law. The duplicity at the heart of the U.S.-Israeli relationship puts that founding principle at risk.

For seven terrifying centuries, heretics were punished under canon law. In 1633, Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei was condemned for “grave suspicion of heresy” when he showed that the Sun—not the crown—was the center of the universe despite what the King’s subjects—with help from the Church—had been induced to believe.

With the merger of church and state in the 4^th Century Roman Empire, anyone daring to dispute papal authority—by challenging with facts the One True Faith—was condemned as both a heretic and an enemy of the state. That practice continues in modern times.

The New Heretics are those few who challenge America’s faith in its “special relationship” with an extremist enclave granted nation state recognition in 1948 by a Christian-Zionist president, Harry Truman. Critics of this enclave invite condemnation as “anti-Semites,” a modern form of social excommunication.

Defenders of the Zionist Faithful were forced to become more vigilant in monitoring this heresy after Israeli troops used U.S.-provided arms and munitions to kill more than 1,400 Palestinians in Gaza, one-third of them reportedly children.

That well-timed attack, planned for more than a year, was scheduled between Christmas and the January 20^th presidential inaugural. Within 48 hours of ending its assault, Israel had dispatched an army of bloggers to counter anti-Zionist websites. By early February, the Anti-Defamation League was bemoaning a “pandemic of anti-Semitism.” The massacre fueled outrage worldwide even as the ADL portrayed that anger as “anti-Semitism.”

By early March, Israeli policy was being described as a threat to international peace and security, a violation of international human rights and a crime against humanity. By associating the U.S.—its ally—with this behavior, the U.S.-Israeli “special relationship” fueled anti-American hatred, fanned the flames of extremism and set the stage for more terrorism. Meanwhile a wave of modern-day excommunications swept college campuses:

• At Hampshire College in Massachusetts, students urged the school to divest from firms whose operations support the Israeli occupation of Palestine. When Israeli policies were compared to apartheid-era South Africa, Zionist Law Professor Alan Dershowitz condemned the students as “rabidly anti-Israel” (enemies of the state).
• At Canada’s Ottawa College, Students Against Israeli Apartheid were prohibited from displaying a poster condemning Zionist policies that president Jimmy Carter had already condemned in his 2007 book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.
• At the University of California, Santa Barbara, Professor William Robinson (Jewish) was attacked as an anti-Semite in an ADL-coordinated silencing campaign. His heresy: sharing with students a photo-essay critical of Israeli policy that had circulated for weeks online. [See “Treason in Plain Sight?” and “The ADL Thought Police.”]

Media-Manipulated Mindsets

Meanwhile Pope Benedict XVI attacked an Argentine cleric whose excommunication he had lifted. As head of the Roman Catholic Church, Benedict claimed he was unaware that Bishop Richard Williamson had challenged key facts of the Holocaust. When condemned by the Pontiff, Williamson apologized. The Vatican insisted he recant, a concept lifted directly from the Inquisition.

Critics suspect this early February dispute was meant to distract attention from the carnage in Gaza and create sympathy for Israel by evoking memories of the Holocaust. No media outlet mentioned that this German Pope, the first since 1523, previously led the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a direct descendant of the Church’s 16^th century tribunal, the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Universal Inquisition.

The Media Czar Haim Saban an “Israeli-American ” who wields influence to advance Zionist goals.

The fiercest condemnation of the bishop’s reluctance to recant came not from Rome but from Angela Merkel in Berlin who was elected German Chancellor in 2005. No media outlet mentioned that in 2003 Zionist media mogul Haim Saban acquired control of ProSiebenSat.1, Germany’s second largest broadcaster.

While wielding a major opinion-shaping media outlet during Merkel’s ascendancy as Germany’s first female chancellor, Saban described himself as an “Israeli-American” and “a one-issue guy and my issue is Israel.” Steve Rattner, Saban’s financial adviser, explained the motive for his media acquisition: “He thinks Germany is critical to Israel.” Rattner re-emerged as president Barack Obama’s auto industry “car czar” before resigning in mid-July due to a pension fund scandal.

To put these media-dependent developments in historical perspective requires a grasp of how—in the Information Age—warfare is waged not on a traditional battlefield but in the shared field of consciousness. In the public’s shared mindset—where consensus opinions are created, shaped and sustained—facts are routinely displaced with what “the mark” can be induced to believe.

That’s why national security agencies must monitor media czars such as Saban who is candid about using his influence to advance Zionist goals. In June 2006, a Saban-led group acquired Univision, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S. With Latinos the fastest-growing voting bloc in the U.S., Univision is critical to Israel’s ability to sustain its control of U.S. foreign policy. Univision is the fifth largest television network in the U.S., reaching 98% of Spanish-speaking households through 62 television stations, 90 affiliate stations and more than 2,000 cable affiliates. For a system of self-governance reliant on informed consent, it is difficult to overstate the threat to democracy when policy-making is filtered through the pro-Israeli bias of media-owning Zionists. In addition to emerging as a reliable EU advocate for Israeli policies, Merkel threatened to arrest Williamson for Holocaust denial on a EU-wide warrant. A search of her phone records would doubtless uncover a discussion with a key supporter, Haim Saban.

Zionists and the lawmakers they groom are well positioned to advance a modern-day Inquisition—as when Bishop Williamson simultaneously faced arrest in Europe and expulsion from Argentina, the site of a seminary he directed and home to the largest Jewish population in Latin America.

The People In Between

In October 2007, Defense Secretary Robert Gates coined a generic phrase to describe the most perilous combatants when waging what he called “unconventional warfare.” A former C.I.A. Director, he portrayed this enemy as “the people in between.” Between Galileo and the facts was Church doctrine deployed to displace science with beliefs or, in modern-day parlance, with consensus opinion. Between the German people and the ballot box was Haim Saban for whom the election of Angela Merkel was critical to Israel. Next is Univision.

To gain credence (believability) for the displacement of facts with beliefs requires that the public’s shared mental environment be fed a steady diet of supportive impressions. Thus the agenda-advancing assistance when “unrelated” events emerge in the same timeframe to reinforce the intended orthodoxy. For example, following the Israeli assault on Gaza, news reports in February included several high profile accounts, including:

• The suspension of U.K. diplomat Rowan Laxton for allegedly making anti-Semitic remarks while riding an exercise bike in a London gymnasium.
• Reports of police protection provided in Dubai to Andy Ram, an Israeli tennis star, reinforcing the media-induced narrative that Israelis were at risk.
• A White House announcement that the Obama administration would attend a planning session for a 2009 World Conference Against Racism but may boycott it.

These narrative-advancing impressions were reinforced by the release in 2008 of eight Holocaust-themed films, including The ReaderExtras, a comedy series in which she played herself, an actor congratulated her on her role in a Holocaust-related film, to which she responded: starring Kate Winslet who received a high profile Academy Award for best actress in a leading role. She even joked about the influence wielded by pro-Israelis in Hollywood and popular culture. In a 2005 filming of

“I don’t think we need another film about the Holocaust, do we? It’s like, how many have there been? We get it. It was grim. Move on. No, I’m doing it because I’ve noticed that if you do a film about the Holocaust, [you're] guaranteed an Oscar. I’ve been nominated four times—never won. The whole world is going, ‘Why hasn’t Winslet won one?’ That’s it. That’s why I’m doing it. Schindler’s bloody List. The Pianist. Oscars coming out of their ass!”

Duplicity – From Antiquity to Modernity

Framers of the U.S. Constitution viewed democracy as a form of governance that resides not in a royal court or the papacy but in a mindset shared by its participants. Where else could self-governance reside? Thus the key role envisioned for media as an “in-between” domain essential to convey the facts required for informed consent. Absent widespread access to unbiased information, liberty would succumb to the exploitation of those skilled at preying on ignorance and beliefs. On that key point, the Framers were proven correct.

Thus the perils when those who mean to live free rely on media with an undisclosed bias. It is precisely such “people in between” that routinely displace facts with what an unsuspecting public (“the mark”) can be deceived to believe. In an Information Age, such fraudulent behavior is not akin to treason, that agenda-advancing duplicity is treason. Haim Saban is unusual only in conceding the pro-Israeli bias he brings to his media operations.

This duplicitous modus operandi works the same in modernity as in antiquity. The impact on informed consent is identical regardless whether the media-enabled deceit is a false belief in Iraqi WMD, a consensus faith in the infallibility of unfettered financial markets, or a shared opinion that this Zionist enclave is a democracy and an ally rather than what the oft-recurring fact patterns confirm: an enemy within.

Such treachery is at least as old as the use of canon law to silence critics of Church doctrine. The only modern component of this deceitful craft is the global reach of contemporary media and its capacity to manipulate minds and emotions on an unprecedented scale.

A 1578 handbook for inquisitors explained that its harsh penalties were “for the public good in order that others may become terrified and weaned away from the evils they would commit.” The New Heretics chronicle the costs of the U.S.-Israel relationship in blood, treasure, insecurity and credibility. Those who yearn for freedom from such manipulation can no longer afford America’s entangled alliance with an extremist enclave notorious for waging war by way of deception.

   Sa ne amintim ca Brent Scowcroft, fost US National Security Adviser a admis ca exista agenti ai serviciilor secrete americane pe teren in interiorul Iranului si ca tinerilor iranieni nu le mai place modul de viata actual si ca atare o schimbare este inevitabila in aceasta tara … Cititi va rog si articolul:

Ca atara, cea mai buna cale pentru a minimaliza oprobiul si a maximiza suportul, este de a lovi doar atunci cand se va ajunge la opinia generalizata, conform careia iranienii au respins o asa de superba oferta, incat singura concluzie logica ar fi ca doar un regim criminal ce doreste achizitionarea sau fabricarea de arme nucleare, ar putea face asa ceva… Pasul urmator ar fi o interventie SUA sau Israel, dar nu una de tip manioasa, ci mai degraba una trista, o actiune facuta cu durere in suflet si care ar face comunitatea internationala sa concluzioneze ca iranienii si-au facut-o cu mana lor, refuzand o intelegere excelenta.

   In continuare, se apreciaza importanta Iranului pentru SUA si se face referire la exportul sau de aproximativ 2,5 milioane barili de petrol pe zi si se considera ca folosindu-se o tehnologie adecvata, productia s-ar putea mari substantial. Nu se uita nici faptul ca resursele sale de gaz sunt printre cele mai mari din lume. Se reaminteste de asemenea ca Irakul, un alt mare producator de petrol, este acum parte integrata in sistem …

   Este incredibil cat tupeu pot avea. S-a ajuns ca bogatiile unei tari sa nu fie un motiv de bucurie pentru cetatenii ei, ci unul de ingrijorare. Nu ca n-ar fi fost mereu asa, caci asta era si motivul campaniilor de cucerire din vechime, insa acum totul este invelit in conceptul de „democratie” si „liberate”.

   Se mai vorbeste de manipulari subtile si de provocari inteligente, totul pentru a se ajunge la varianta in care se va pune problema: “ce presedintele american s-ar putea abţine de la o invazie dupa ce iranienii tocmai au omorat mii de civili americani intr-un atac în Statele Unite ale Americii?” Ceva de gen 11.09.2001? Posibil, caci autorii documentului par a se plange ca altceva decat o acuzare a unei sponsorizari iraniene a unui 9/11, este greu sa asigure un sprijin international.

   Mai spun ei si despre obligativitatea de a identifica una sau mai multe grupuri de opozitie iraniana pe care sa le sprijine precum au facut-o in Afganistan, Nicaragua, Kurdistan, Angola, si zeci de alte regiuni dupa cel de-al doilea război mondial. Statele Unite ar furniza arme, bani, instruire, asistenta pentru a ajuta aceste grupuri sa se dezvolte. Apoi mass-media de propaganda ar putea scoate in evidenta „nemultumirile” si ar lauda „opozitia”.

   Ceva-ceva in acest sens deja au inceput:

In my few moments of spare time a day, I’ve been experimenting with the effect of Twitter’s microblogging. What have I learned? The primary thing that you need to know is that the world of Twitter is wide open to new participants, whether individuals or foundations. It’s a great way to catch the eyes and ears of people who matter and to drive traffic to your blog.

In the last few days I came across a number of stories that I had to share with you– they are that exciting.

1. “10 Twitter Tips for Nonprofits” by Heather Mansfield of Change.org (@changedotorg). The only point I disagree with is Mansfield’s advice that you should provide value to your followers instead of ‘chit-chatting.’ As with any social media platform, I believe it is key to imbue your tweets with a sense of  personality so that you readers feel a personal connection and investment with you as an individual. This is also why I advocate that foundation accounts are headed by a single person whose name is cited. People want to talk to people.
2. “Nonprofit Groups Outpace Businesses in Adopting Social Networking Tools” by Peter Panepento of The Chronicle of Philanthropy (@philanthropy). Among the findings of the UMass-Dartmouth study are that 89% of nonprofits are using some form of social media and that 57% have blogs. These numbers, which may strike some as surprisingly high, are a logical result of the low barriers to entry of social media in this cut to the bone economy.

   Jared Cohen

   “State Department Atwitter Over Young, Jewish Tech Tutor” by Allison Gaudet Yarrow of The Forward (@jdforward). The best part of this article is the Stephen Colbert interview with our subject, Jared Cohen, who points out that 60% of the Middle East’s population is under 30, and that they are the most accessible, impressionable, and those with whom we have the greatest opportunity to connect. Interestingly, Cohen’s own Twitter page is fairly average (@Jared_Cohen). I guess when you are the youngest member of the State Department’s Policy Planning Team, self promotion isn’t the first thing on your mind.

4. “Tweets– With Substance: Young Jews Look to Twitter Website to Rediscover Jewish Identity” by Adam Kredo of the Washington Jewish Week. The article examines Twitter’s role in connecting young Jews who feel disenfranchised from formal Jewish communities. The article quotes Lisa Kaneff, who says, “It’s not just a social avenue, it’s a religious and educational avenue, one that I’ve never been exposed to.” Using Twitter, Kaneff enhanced both her on- and offline connections with the Jewish community, providing her with a richer experience overall. As always with social media, Twitter should be used as a tool for building relationships with the ultimate goal of increasing people’s personal investment in each other.
5. “Morphed: Cheryl Saban’s Journey from Beach Bunny to Philanthropist”

On August 4, 2005 American Israel Political Affairs Committee (AIPAC) operatives Steven J. Rosen and Keith Weissman were arrested on charges relating to espionage on behalf of Israel.

This had a lot to do with Iran. It followed the arrest in May 2004 of Larry Franklin, the Pentagon’s top Iran analyst by the FBI after he had been caught turning over secret documents (including ones pertaining to Iran) to Israeli Embassy staffers including Mossad Station Chief Naor Gilon. FBI

(Franklin had worked in the Office of Special Plans under neocons Douglas Feith and Abram Shulsky and participated in the Rome meeting in December 2001 with Michael Ledeen that likely hatched the Niger uranium forged letters plot.) He was given a reduced sentence of 12 ½ years for cooperating with prosecutors in January 2006.

You might suppose that Israeli intelligence officers would have intimate access to U.S. intelligence without resorting to espionage.  According to retired Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, Israeli officials didn’t even need to sign in when visiting Feith’s Office of Special Plans in the Pentagon when she worked there in 2002.This whole affair is testimony to the extraordinary concern of the Jewish state with Iran, with knowing whatever the  U.S. knows about Iran’s nuclear program, and with influencing U.S. plans to “deal with” Iran.

Sometime after the Rosen-Weissman arrests Jane Harman had a telephone conversation with a “suspected Israeli agent” under NSA wiretap. The agent asked her, as a California Representative and member of the Intelligence Committee to use her influence to reduce the charges against the indicted men.  She agreed to “waddle in” to the matter, “if you think it would make a difference” but thought she might have more influence with an unnamed official at the White House.

This would be done in exchange for the Israeli agent arranging for an AIPAC fundraiser (widely identified as California billionaire Haim Saban) to put pressure on Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat expected to become House speaker after the 2006 election, to select Harman as head of the Intelligence Committee.  Justice Department lawyers upon hearing the tape felt that they had caught the congresswoman in a “completed crime” demanding investigation.

The Congressional leadership including Pelosi was subsequently notified of the wiretap, although Harman only became aware of it last week. But Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez declined to even authorize such an investigation, because, according to Stein and others, the Bush administration appreciated her services to date in supporting the administration’s program of illegal surveillance and expected her to provide further services in future. (Okay, their reasoning apparently went, so she was wheeling and dealing politically with an Israeli agent. But she was helping them persuade the New York Times to sit on its story about their warrantless wiretapping of U.S. citizens. “We need Jane,” Gonzalez reportedly declared.)

So several years went by. “Blue Dog” Democrat Harman performed dutiful service to the Bush administration. In December 2005, Harman urged the Washington bureau chief of the New York Times to sit on a story about wireless wiretapping, and she was a consistent defender of the Iraq War. When the Democrats won the 2006 election, Pelosi, who had been informed about the wiretap of her colleague, declined to appoint Harman to the intelligence post.

Meanwhile the Rosen-Weissman trial was delayed by an appeals court ruling that allowed the defense to use classified information in proceedings and a lower-court judge’s decision ruling that prosecutors must show that the two men knew that the information they allegedly disclosed would harm the U.S. or aid a foreign government and that they knew what they were doing was illegal. And no doubt, behind the scenes, high-powered politicians were waddling in on behalf of Rosen and Weissman.

The Israel Lobby of which AIPAC is the highest expression suffered little damage from the arrests. It continued to muster huge congressional majorities for resolutions targeting Syria and Iran and supporting Israel, even at the height of the Gaza blitz. On the other hand, the political fortunes of the neoconservatives, as a faction within the Bush administration actively promoting “regime change” throughout Southwest Asia for the security interests of Israel, declined significantly during Bush’s second term.

Recall how two years ago neocon godfather Norman Podhoretz  was praying for Bush to bomb Iran in an address to AIPAC, op-ed in the New York Times, and longer piece in Commentary, and meeting with Bush and Cheney to privately to make the case. George Bush had embraced the most paranoid language of the Lobby in referring to the Iranian regime. Ahmadinejad had supposedly threatened to “wipe Israel off the map” (no matter how many time journalists and scholars pointed out that, no, he was quoting Ayatollah Khomeini, about the occupation of Jerusalem passing from the pages of time like the Soviet Union, like the rule of the Shah…) From August 2007 Bush deliberately intimated that Iran, with no nuclear weapons, threatened Israel, a country with over 100 nuclear weapons, with “nuclear holocaust.” He thus—very explosively—joined the memory of the Nazi  slaughter of European Jewry with the Iranian civilian nuclear program.

However, the hopes of the Israeli government, the Lobby and the neocons within the administration and media cheering section were dashed when Bush failed to authorize the sale of bunker busting bombs to Israel in 2008. The administration left office with the mullahs still in power in Tehran.

The atmosphere of confrontation with Iran has somewhat receded; now Roger Cohen’s New York Times columns give us a realistic look at the state of Jews in Iran. (Of course it draws fire from the likes of  Jeffrey Goldberg who, having disseminated disinformation justifying war prior to the attack on Iraq calls Cohen “a Jewish apologist for an anti-Semitic regime…[who] has debased himself.”) The drive to get the U.S. to bomb Iran, and the broader campaign to irrationally vilify Iran, has stymied somewhat.

For years, and up until very recently, the Israelis have been saying that if the U.S. does not take care of the Iranian nuclear problem, they will take military action themselves. So Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman raised some eyebrows April 26 when he told the Austrian Kleine Zeitung that Israel would not attack Iran. “We are not talking about a military attack. Israel cannot resolve militarily the entire world’s problem. I propose that the United States, as the largest power in the world, take responsibility for resolving the Iranian question.” Earlier he’d told a Russian paper that Israel’s main strategic threat was now Pakistan anyway. (That, I could have told you, is the one Muslim country with nuclear weapons.) Isn’t it odd how that resembles Obama’s view of the world?

Soon thereafter Defense Secretary Robert Gates told Congress that bombing Iranian nuclear sites would have only temporary, ineffective results, and that imposing sanctions made more sense. Obama is indeed focusing on Pakistan, or “Af-Pak” as his advisors are unfortunately calling Afghanistan and Pakistan, and he may want Iran’s cooperation in pursuing his objectives there. There appears to be complete unity of purpose in support of the governments of both countries and in opposition to the Taliban groups. So the threat of a U.S. bombing attack on Iran has indeed receded somewhat.

I think we should see the dismissal of the Rosen-Weissman case by the Justice Department in this context. It’s a sop to the Lobby, and apparently the president had a personal hand in it. If the U.S. will not bomb Iran for Israel, neither will it prosecute AIPAC members for spying for Israel. Fair enough?

Last month an indignant official in the Justice Department, thinking, “Oh no, they’re going to dismiss this case,” decided to leak the Jane Harman transcripts to Jeff Stein just so to educate the public, in the absence of a trial, about how politics work in this country.  Rosen, Weissman, Harman, and Gonzalez all walk free as AIPAC gears up for its annual conference (with Harman a featured speaker) and for a campaign around passage of  HR 1985 (the “Iran Diplomatic Enhancement Act”) which, despite its name, is all about provoking war.

Justice Dept. Seeks To Drop Charges Against former AIPAC Officiales!!!

Reporting from Washington — The Justice Department said today that it will ask for dismissal of all charges in a politically sensitive criminal case against two former officials of an influential pro-Israel lobbying organization, saying recent court decisions had made it hard for federal prosecutors to win the case.

The disclosure, which is all but certain to be approved by a federal judge, will likely end the five-year legal battle between the government and lawyers for Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, formerly of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

It is the second major prosecution dropped by Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. since taking over in January. Last month the government dropped its prosecution of former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens even though he had already been convicted, citing widespread misconduct by prosecutors in the case.

The Bush administration’s Justice Department had accused Rosen and Weissman of obtaining classified information from the U.S. government and then disclosing it to third parties in a way that could either harm the national security or aid a foreign country, in this case, Israel.

The high-profile legal team for the two men, who later left AIPAC, have accused the government of trying to “criminalize” the kind of horse-trading in information that has long occurred in Washington. After many delays and postponements, the trial for Rosen and Weissman had been set for June 2 in the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va., where the Justice Department filed the court motions today.

The intrigue surrounding the case, already chock full of references to top-secret intelligence matters, intensified significantly in recent weeks with news reports that Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.), a staunch ally of AIPAC, had been caught on federal wiretaps in 2005 offering to lobby Bush administration officials to help the two lobbyists in exchange for help in obtaining the coveted chairmanship of the House intelligence committee.

Harman said she had done nothing wrong.

Rosen and Weissman had pleaded not guilty and also denied doing anything illegal.

(A third defendant in the case, former Pentagon official Lawrence A. Franklin, pleaded guilty to giving classified defense information to Rosen and Weissman and was sentenced to more than 12 years in prison.)

Defense lawyers for Rosen and Weissman — Abbe D. Lowell for Rosen and John Nassikas for Weissman — credited the government for dismissing the charges, saying that the investigation has been misguided since the FBI first searched AIPAC’s offices in 2004.

“It was wrong for the government to single out AIPAC and our clients and allege wrongdoing when all they ever did was their job of helping the United States create better foreign policy . . . and it was especially wrong not to see the many flaws in the case so that these two men and their families had to live under this unfair cloud for so long,” Lowell and Nassikas said in a statement.

“We are extremely grateful that this new administration, in coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Virginia, has taken seriously their obligation to evaluate cases on the merits and not to allow an unjust prosecution to continue solely due to momentum.”

Referring to their clients, the lawyers also noted that the case had “taken a tremendous toll on them. They lost their jobs unnecessarily, they were shunned by many in their community and they were left to fight these outrageous charges on their own.”

According to the indictment, Rosen and Weissman conspired to obtain and then disseminate classified information on sensitive issues such as U.S. policy toward Iran, the status of U.S. counter-terrorism investigations in the Middle East and current intelligence on the fight against al Qaeda and other terrorist networks.

Recently, lawyers for Rosen and Weissman won several major victories in the case, including the right to subpoena as defense witnesses a large number of former top Bush administration officials, including former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, in an effort to bolster the two lobbyists’ contentions that the Bush administration — and other administrations before it — had routinely discussed sensitive information with AIPAC as part of a sanctioned back-channel relationship between the United States and Israel. AIPAC also has close relationships with numerous ranking members of Congress and officials in all sectors of the U.S. government.

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III had made some legal rulings that set a high bar for the prosecutors, including a requirement that they prove that Rosen and Weissman knowingly meant to harm the United States or aid another country by trading in sensitive national defense information.

In a statement issued this morning, the acting top federal prosecutor in the Virginia court district, U.S. Atty. Dana J. Boente, said the government was moving to dismiss the charges because of additional burdens imposed on prosecutors by the recent court decisions.

“When this indictment was brought, the government believed it could prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt based on the statute,” Boente said.

But, Boente added, “given the diminished likelihood the government will prevail at trial under the additional intent requirements imposed by the court and the inevitable disclosure of classified information that would occur at any trial in this matter, we have asked the court to dismiss the indictment.”

Rosen and Weissman were not charged with espionage. Instead, prosecutors accused them of getting classified information from government sources like Franklin and then mishandling it by leaking it to reporters, think tank personnel and, most controversially, Israeli government officials, often in exchange for other information.

Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists, who tracked the case closely for its effect on U.S. espionage policy and freedom of information, said the charges were almost unprecedented and misguided from the outset, in that authorities used provisions of the 1917 Espionage Act that had never before been applied to lobbyists.

“This is a repudiation of the attempt to use the Espionage Act against leaks and those who receive them,” Aftergood said. “That’s what made it so troublesome. Espionage charges would have been fine; they would have been found innocent or guilty. Instead they were charged with a much more diffuse and flimsier crime.”

1. The nest of Israeli-firsters, Israeli ass-kissers, dual loyalists and no doubt outright Israeli agents that is known as AIPAC is holding its annual policy conference in Washington, D.C. for three days starting Sunday, May 3. Mossad Jane Harman is scheduled to speak there and no doubt Haim Saban will make an appearance. The questions is, will the Israeli agent to whom Mossad Jane admits talking to on the phone and who allegedly bribed her by dangling the chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee in front of her be there as well? Very possibly so, especially if that person, who for some very strange reason has never had his name released, is an AIPAC employee.   It sure would be nice if the transcripts with full idents suddenly appeared in the main stream media as the conference begins.  Bet that would put an end to the continuing efforts to stop the trial of former AIPAC employees Rosen and Weissman.

Here’s what the tuyuur have pieced together about the conversation that got Mossad Jane some unwanted exposure. This is all based on main stream media and blog reports of various parts of the story.

Mossad Jane is on the phone with an unnamed “Israeli agent“. Now an “agent” of Israel would be an American citizen working on behalf of Israel. And in fact, Mossad Jane has publicly acknowledged that she knows which conversation is the one at the height of the current controversy and that the person she was talking to was an American citizen. (We know this thanks to Dr. Juan Cole, the only Kennedy-liberal type I know whose blog should be ready regularly. Dr. Cole has a good reason to pinch the ass of the Israeli lobby since it played a major part in screwing him out of a job at Harvard University.)  So, it appears, this American Mossad Jane was on the phone with was working on behalf of Israel and thus was an Israeli agent. Now, according to the New York Times and picked up by Mondoweiss, the person Mossad Jane was talking to told her that he would have a major figure in California threaten Pelosi by withholding campaign contributions from her. That “California” figure is reportedly Haim Saban, a billionaire who came to the United States from Israel.

So, who was the person Mossad Jane was talking to who was suspected of being an Israeli agent? Saban already is one and, so it seems, so is Mossad Jane. Who’s that third guy? Does he work for AIPAC like Rosen and Weissman?

We think it would be a good idea for the FBI to go back into AIPAC’s offices this Sunday with warrents while the organization is holding its Israel love fest and maybe have a look around.

We also think it would be a good idea if the independent media would attend AIPAC’s version of Bohemian Grove and carefully report what is said and WHO is in attendance.  Maybe they’ll even get to interview Mossad Jane herself.

2. Many have commented on how interesting it is that Mossad Jane was a strong supporter of questionable wire-tapping schemes that Alberto Gonzales favored and that he may have even used evidence gathered against her to keep her on key.  Not so sure about that last point, but there is no doubt that the Zionist Golem is a major player in the erosion of the rights of every-day US citizens.  Despite all the blathering on about the concept of “healing the world” (tikkun olam) that the “Zionist light” crowd, to borrow once again Xymphora’s phrase, likes to attribute to liberal and progressive Judaism, there is quite another side to this concept and I think you had just better pay attention to it folks.

Rabbi Avi Shafran, the head of public affairs for the charming Agudath Israel of America, informs us that tikkun olam has been grossly misrepresented by the liberal Jewish community in the course of  his review of a number of meanings of the phrase. He quotes Maimonides on the concept:

“[In] any case where someone takes human lives without clear proof [of a capital offense] or the issuance of a warning, or even on the strength of a single witness [as two are required in a Jewish court], or where a person hates someone and kills him [seemingly] by accident, a king is permitted to execute [the unjustified taker of life] in order to repair the world ["li'saken ha'olam"] according to the needs of the time� to strike fear and shatter the strength [literally, "break the hand"] of the world’s perpetrators of evil.”

Gee, isn’t that nice?  Shafran’s view on this is even more horrifying than the quote itself:

First he paraphrases the quote to make sure the reader understands what this most famous of Jewish thinkers has written (as usual red highlighting is mine):

And so, Maimonides informs us, there is yet another meaning to tikkun olam, the authorization of a nation’s leader to do whatever is necessary, “according to the needs of the time” - even suspend the ordinary rules of evidence in capital cases - to preserve the security of his society from those who seek to disrupt it.

Shafran very much approves of this and poses the question of how the Maimonidean concept of tikkun olam might pertain to our own society, leaders and times.

I hope you are sitting down. Ready? Here goes:

Reasonably, it would seem to advocate the right, in fact the responsibility, of the chief executive of a country threatened by murderous elements to take strong and unusual action to undermine those enemies of civilized society – even if some personal rights may be compromised in the process.

So, interestingly, the concept of tikkun olam would seem to argue most eloquently today for things like, say, the imprisonment of enemy combatants, secret wiretaps and surveillance of citizens.

And thanks to people like Mossad Jane and her AIPAC and NeoCon buddies, that’s exactly what we have.

3. Mossad Jane never did get that job she was reportedly offered as the chair of the House  Intelligence Committee even though she is said to have agreed to do the bidding of an “Israeli agent” by working to get the AIPAC spy trial killed.  The chirping here at Mantiq al-Tayr has brought us to the conclusion that she did not get the job because of the scandal over this very issue that was in the media back in 2006 when she could have been appointed. Pelosi, who may hate Harman – which is about the only good thing about Pelosi that I can imagine – probably didn’t appoint Harman to the post because if she had done so, the transcripts that are the center of controversy today (and back in 2006) probably would have been released.  This would have shed so much light on the Israeli lobby that we would have seen them all running for cover like kitchen cockroaches in a slum owned by Sam Zell.

if we really want to be honest about why gaza is a prison and why palestinians are trapped inside then we must not only look at the primary culprit–the zionist entity–but also their partners in crime: egypt and the united states. we all know about the u.s., of course, because it supplies all the weapons to the israeli terrorists so that they may murder palestinians every day. but what of the egyptians. the egyptians who account for at least 1/4 of the jailers of gaza given their control over the rafah border. physicians for human rights and gisha published a report this week on the closure of rafah and the damage it does to palestinians in gaza which reads in part:

However, in the year between the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit (June 2006) and the Hamas takeover of the internal government in Gaza (June 2007), Israel kept Rafah Crossing closed 85% of the time; since June 2007, Rafah Crossing has been closed permanently, except for random and limited openings by Egypt, which meet only 3% of the needs of the residents of the Gaza Strip to enter and leave.

The closure of Rafah has severe implications for the residents of the Gaza Strip, including preventing access to health care services that are not available in Gaza, preventing access to opportunities for academic studies or employment abroad or in the West Bank, forcing long separations of family members on either side of the border, causing fatal damage to commerce and business, and creating a growing feeling among residents of the Gaza Strip that they are enclosed, isolated and trapped. The closure, of course, means a real inability to leave the Gaza Strip, even under circumstances of mortal danger.

of course, i do not agree with their assessment, that any palestinians are to blame for its closure. i reject any statement that blames the victim. and here we see the limits of so-called israeli human rights agencies. but i do think it is necessary for us to include egypt in the equation as they do. on monday two more palestinians died as a result of this closure because they were not allowed to leave for medical treatment:

Two Palestinian patients were reported dead on Monday in the Gaza strip due to the Israeli continued siege.

Both women needed treatment outside the coastal region but the Israeli military did not allow them to leave Gaza, local sources reported.

Doctors said that Somod Akkash, 17, and Fatma Al Shandi, 66, died on Monday midday In Gaza City hospital. They added that hundreds of patients are in critical conditions due to the Israeli 22 month long siege and not allowing patients to leave Gaza for treatment.

The Palestinian health ministry in Gaza announced that with those two patients dead today the number of patients due to the ongoing Israeli siege on the costal region has reached 320.

but they also could have left through rafah had egypt and their israeli terrorist partners allowed them to. and egypt and its israeli terrorist partners are not only responsible for keeping people trapped inside, of course. they are responsible for denying palestinians the right to go home as well. of course the situation of laila el haddad last week, who egyptian authorities refused to allow out of the airport after 27 hours of detention there, is case in point. she is finally back in the u.s., amazingly enough, and wrote a long and eloquent blog entry entitled “i was born palestinian,” about it which i will quote in its entirety because i think it needs to be read by all:

“Its not very comfortable in there is it?” said the stony faced official, cigarette smoke forming a haze around his gleaming oval head.

“Its OK. We’re fine” i replied wearily, delirious after being awake for a straight period of 30 hours.
“You could be in there for days you know. For weeks. Indefinitely. “So, tell me, you are taking a plane tomorrow morning to the US?”

It was our journey home that began with the standard packing frenzy: squeezing everything precious and dear and useful into two suitcases that would be our sustenance for the course of 3 months.

The trips to the outdoor recreation store- in preparation for what I anticipated to be a long and tortuous journey across Rafah Crossing to Gaza. The inspect repellent; the mosquito netting; the water purifier; the potty toppers for my kids ad the granola bars and portion sized peanut butter cups. This time, I wanted to be ready, I thought to myself-just in case I got stuck at the Crossing. The Crossing. My presumptuousness is like a dull hit to the back of my head now.

In addition to all the packing of suitcases, we were also packing up our house- my husband was finishing up his residency at Duke University and set to start a medical fellowship at Johns Hopkins in July. In the meantime, we were “closing shop”, putting our things in storage, selling the rest, and heading overseas: me to Gaza, he to Lebanon to visit his family; and eventually I was too meet him there (assuming i could get into Gaza, and the, assuming I could get out). Yassine is a third-generation Palestinian refugee from the village of Waarit al-Siris in nothern historic Palestine; he was born in a refugee camp in Lebanon and holds a Laizze Passe for Palestinian refugees. Israel denies him return to his own home- or even to the home of his spouse in Gaza. So when we go overseas, we often go our separate ways; we cannot live legally, as a unit, as a family, in our own homes.

I hold a Palestinian Authority passport. It replaced the “temporary two-year Jordanian passport for Gaza residents” that we held until the Oslo Accords and the creation of the Palestinian Authority in the mid ’90s, which itself replaced the Egyptian travel documents we held before that. A progression in a long line of stateless documentation.

It is a passport that allows no passage. A passport that denied me entry to my own home. This is its purpose: to mark me, brand me, so that I am easily identified and cast aside without questions; it is convenient for those giving the orders. It is a system for the collective identification of those with no identity.

We finished packing as much as we could of the house, leaving the rest to Yassine who was to leave a week after us, and drove 4 hours to Washington to spend a few day sat my brother’s house before we took off.

First, we headed to the the Egyptian embassy.

Last year, my parents were visiting us from Gaza City when Rafah was sealed hermetically. They attempted to fly back to Egypt to wait for the border to open- but were now allowed to board the plane in Washington. “Palestinians cannot fly to Egypt now without a visa, new rules” the airline personnel explained, “and no visas can be issued until Rafah is open” added the Egyptian embassy official. They were in a conundrum, aggravated by the fact that their US stay entry stamp had reach passed its six-month limit. Eventually, they got around the issue by obtaining an Egyptian tourist visa, made easier by their old age, which they used to wait in Egypt for one month until Rafah Crossing opened again.

I did not want to repeat their ordeal, so I called the embassy this time, which assured me the protocol had changed: now, it was only Palestinian men who were not allowed to fly to or enter Egypt. Women were, and would get their visa at the Egyptian port of destination. I was given a signed and dated letter (April 6, 2009) by the consul to take with me in case I encountered any problems: “The Consular Section of the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt hereby confirms that women, who are residents of the Gaza Strip, and who hold passports issued by the Palestinian Authority are required to get their visa to enter Egypt at Egyptian ports and NOT at the various Egyptian consulates in the United States on their way to the Gaza Strip for the purpose of reaching their destination (i.e. Gaza Strip)” it read.

With letter and bags in hand, we took off, worried only about the possibility of entering Gaza- the thought of being able to enter Egypt never crossing my mind.

2 long-haul flights and one 7 hour transit later, we made it. I knew the routine by heart. Upon our arrival, I was quick to hit the bank to buy the $15 visa stamps for Yousuf and Noor’s American passports and exchange some dollars into Egyptian pounds. I figured it would help pass the time while the lines got shorter.

I then went and filled out my entry cards-an officer came and filled them out with me seeing my hands were full, a daypack on my back, Noor strapped to my chest in a carrier, Yousuf in my hand…

we then submitted our passports, things seemed to be going smoothly. Just then the officer explained he needed to run something by his superior. “You have a Palestinian passport; Rafah crossing is closed…”

“I promise it will just be 5 minutes” he assured me. But that’s all i needed to hear. I knew I was in for a long wait. It was at this point I yanked out my laptop and began to tweet and blog about my experience (full progression of tweets here courtesy Hootsbuddy). At first I thought it would simply help pass the time; it developed into a way to pool resources together that could help me; and ended as a public awareness campaign.

The faces were different each time. 3 or four different rooms and hallways to navigate down. They refused to give names and the answers they gave were always in the form of cryptic questions.

The first explained I would not be allowed entry into Egypt because Palestinians without permanent residency abroad are not allowed in; and besides- Rafah Crossing is closed he said (my response: so open it?). I was told I was to be deported to the UK first. “But I had no British visa” I explained. I was ordered to agree to get on the next flight. I refused-I didn’t come all this way to turn back.

I was escorted to the “extended transit terminal”. It was empty at first, save for a south Asian man in tightly buckled jeans and a small duffel bag that spent the good part of our time there there in a deep sleep. During the day the hall would fill up with locally deported passengers- from villages of cities across Egypt, and we would move our things to the upper waiting area.

Most of the time was spent in this waiting area with low level guards who knew nothing and could do nothing.

At different intervals, a frustrated Yousuf would approach them angrily about “why they wouldn’t let him go see his seedo and tete?” and why “they put cockroaches on the floor”. When we first arrived, he asked if these were the “yahood”, his only experiences with extended closure, delay, and denial of entry being at the hands of the Israeli soldiers and government. “No, but why don’t you ask them why they are are allowed through to sunbathe and we aren’t to our own homes?”

“Rabina kbeer” came the response, signifying impotence. God is great.

There was very little time I was given access to anyone who had any authority. I seemed to be called in whenever the new person on duty arrived, when they were scheduled for their thrice daily interrogation and intimidation, their shooting and crying.

Officers came and went as shifts began and ended. But our status was always the same. Our “problem”, our case, our issue was always the same. We remained, sitting on our chairs, with our papers and documents in hand, waiting, and no one the better.

Always waiting. For this is what the Palestinian does: we wait. For an answer to be given, for a question to be asked; for a marriage proposal to be made, for a divorce to be finalized; for a border to open, for a permit to be issued; for a war to end; for a war to begin; for a child to be born; for one to die a martyr; for retirement or a new job; for exile to a better place and for return to the only place that knows us; for our prisoners to come home; for our home to no longer be prisons; for our children to be free; for freedom from a time when we no longer have to wait.

We waited for the next shift as we were instructed by those who made their own instructions. Funny how when you need to pass the time, the time does not pass.

“You need to speak with whose in charge-and their shift starts at 10 am”. So we pass the night and wait until 10. “Well by the time they really get started its more like noon”. So we wait till noon. “Well the real work isn’t until the evening”. And we wait until evening. Then the cycle starts again.

Every now and then the numberless phone would ring requesting me, and a somber voice would ask if I changed my mind. I insisted all I wanted to do was go home; that it was not that complicated.

“But Gaza is a special case, we all know that” I was told.

Special, as in expendable, not human, not entitled to rights special, I thought.

Unfamiliar faces that acted as though though I was a long-lost friend kept popping in and out to see me. As though I were an amnesiac in a penitentiary. They all kept asking the same cryptic question “so you are getting on a plane soon, right?”

First, a gentleman from the Palestinian representative’s office that someone else whose name I was meant to recognize sent. ” It’ll all be resolved within the hour” he promised confidently, before going on to tell me about his son who worked with Motorola in Florida;

“Helping Israeli drones do their job?”

“That’s right!” he beamed.

An hour came and went, and suddenly the issue was “irresolvable”, and I was “a journalist up to trouble”.

Friends and family in Egypt, the US, and Gaza, worked around the clock with me, calling in any favors they had, anyone they knew, doing anything they could to get some answers and let me through. But the answer was always the same: Amn il Dawla (State Security and Intelligence) says no, and they are the ultimate authorities. No one goes past them.

Later a second Palestinian representative came to see me.

“So you are not going on that second flight are you?”

“What are you talking about? Why does everyone speak to me in question form?”

“Answer the question”

“No, I came here to go to Gaza, not to return to the US”

“Ok that’s all I needed to know; there is a convoy of injured Palestinian with security clearance heading to the border with some space; we are trying to get you on there with them; 15 minutes and it’ll all be resolved, we just need clearance, its all over” he assured me.

Yousuf smashed another cockroach.

We were taken down a new hallway. A new room. A new face. The man behind the desk explained how he was losing sleep over my case, how I had the while airport working on it, ho he had a son Yousuf’s age; and then offered me an apple and a bottle of water and told me istaraya7i, to rest, a command I would hear again and again over the course of the 36 hours.

Is this man for real??? an apple and a bottle of water? I thought to myself, my eyes nearly popping out of my face.

“I don’t want your food. I don’t want to rest. I don’t want your sympathy. I JUST WANT TO GO HOME. To my country. To my parents. IS THAT TOO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?” I screamed, breaking my level-headed calm of the past 20 hours.

“Please don’t yell, just calm down, calm down, everyone outside will think I am treating you badly, c’mon, and besides its ‘ayb (disgraceful) not to accept the apple from me”.

“‘Ayb?? What’s ‘AYB is you denying my entry to my own home! And why should I be calm? This situation doesn’t call for calm; it makes no sense and neither should I!”

“C’mon lady don’t have a breakdown in front of your kids please. You know I have a kid your son’s age and its breaking my heart to do this, to see him in these conditions, to put him in the conditions, so please take the plane.”

“So don’t see me in these conditions! There’s a simple solution you know. LET ME GO HOME. Its not asking a lot is it?”

“Hey now look lady” he said, stiffening suddenly into bad cop, his helpless grimace disappeared.
“Rules are rules, you need a visa to get in here like any other country, can you go to Jordan without a visa?’

“Don’t play the rules game with me. I HAD APPROVAL FROM YOUR EMBASSY, FROM YOUR CONSUL GENERAL, to cross into Egypt and go to Gaza; and besides how else am I supposed to get into Gaza???” I shouted, frantically waving the stamped and signed document in front of him as though it were a magic wand.

“So sue him. Amn il Dawla supercedes the foreign ministry’s orders, he must have outdated protocol.”

“The letter was dated April 6, that is 2 days ago, how outdated could it be?? Look- if I could parachute into Gaza I would, trust me. With all do respect to your country, I’m not here to sight-see. Do you have a parachute for me? If I could sail there I would do that too, but last I check Israel was ramming and turning those boats back. Do you have another suggestions?

“What is it you want lady- do you want to just live in the airport? is that it? Because we have no problems letting you live here, really. We can set up a shelter for you. And no one will ever ask about you or know you exist. In any case you don’t have permanent residency abroad so our government policies say we can’t let a Palestinian who does not have permanent residency abroad”

“I have a US Visa- its expired but my extension of status document is valid until the end of June. and besides- what kind of illogical law is that? you aren’t allowing me back home if I don’t have permanent residency abroad?”

“I don’t read English please translate..”

“You see it says here that my status is valid until June 30, 2009″

“Good, so then we CAN deport you back to the US” he said, picking up the phone and giving a quick order for the Palestinian convoy of injured Palestinians heading to the Crossing to go on without me, my only hope of returning home dissipating before my eyes at the hands of a barely literate manipulative enforcer.

“You just said if i have permanent residency abroad I can go home, now you say I can’t, which is it??”

“I’m sorry you are refusing to go on the plane. Take her away please.”

We were ushered back to the extended waiting area, back to our roach ridden premises that had become our home, along with a newly arrived Luxembourgian and French couple and their two children who had failed to produce their passports and were being sent back home. Here I was, about to be deported away from home, over prepared, with my documents and signed papers, from consulates and universities and governments; and they, used to traveling passport-free the EU, being sent back home because they had only an ID card.

It wasn’t long before a new guard came to us, and request we follow him “to a more isolated room”. “It will be better for you- more private. All the African flights are arriving now with all their diseases, you don’t want to be here for that! It’ll get overcrowded and awful in here.”

Given the the well-wishes that preceded my last interrogation about the “uncomfortableness” I may endure, I somehow had a feeling where we were headed.

We were asked to bring all our luggage and escorted down a different hallway; this time we were asked to leave everything behind, and to give up our cameras, laptops, and mobile phones. We took our seats in the front of a tiny filthy room, where 17 other men (and one Indonesian woman was sleeping on the floor in the back, occasionally shouting out in the middle of her interrupted sleep) of varying nationalities were already waiting.

A brute man-, illiterate by his own admission, took charge of each of files, spontaneously blurting out vulgarities and ordering anyone who so much as whispered to shut the hell up or get sent to real prison; the room was referred to as “7abs”, or a cell; I can probably best describe it as the detention or holding room. a heady man with a protruding belly that seems at odds with his otherwise lanky body was the door guard.

Officer #1 divided up the room into regions: the 5 or so south Asians who were there for whatever reason-expired paperwork, illegal documentation- were referred to as “Pakistan” when their attention was needed; The snoozing, sleep-talking woman in the back was “Indonesia”; and the impeccably dressed Guinean businessman, fully decked in a sharp black suit and blue lined tie, was “Kenya” (despite his persistence please to the contrary). There was a group of Egyptian peasants with forged, fake, or wrongly filed Id cards and passports: a 54 year old man whose ID said he was born in 1990; another who left his ID in his village 5 hours away, and so on.

By this point, I had not slept in 27 hours, 40 if one were to count the plane ride. My patience and my energy were wearing thing. My children were filthy and tired and confused; Noor was crying. I tried to set her cot up, but a cell within a cell did not seem to her liking and she resisted, much as I did.

We took the opportunity to chat when officer #1 was away. “”So what did you do?” asked Kenya, the Guinean.

“I was born Palestinian” I replied. “Everyone in here is being deported back home for one reason or another right? I bet I am the only one being deported away from home; the only one denied entry to my home.”

Officer #1 returned, this time he asked me to come with him “with or without your kids”. I brought them along, not knowing what was next.

There was two steely-eyed men on either end of a relatively well-furnished room, once again inquiring about my “comfort” and ordering-in the form of a question- whether I was taking a flight that morning to the US.

Noor began making a fuss, bellowing at the top of her lungs and swatting anyone that approached her.

“She is stubborn. She takes after her mother I see” said the man.

Soon we were escorted back to the waiting area. I knew there was nothing more I could do. We waited for several more hours until my children exhausted themselves and fell asleep. I bathed them in the filthy bathroom sinks with freezing tap water and hand soap and arranged their quarters on the steel chairs of the waiting room, buzzing with what seemed like a thousand gnats. Thank God for the mosquito netting.

Eventually, dawn broke, and we were escorted by two guards to the ticket counter, our $2500 flights rerouted, and put on a plane back to Washington.

I noted on one of my tweets that I would be shocked if my children’s immune system survived this jolt. It didn’t.

My daughter vomited the whole flight to London as I slipped in and out of delirium, mumbling half Arabic half English phrases to the flustered but helpful Englishman sitting next to us. I thank him wherever he is for looking after us.

Whatever she had, Yousuf an eye caught in the coming days-along with an ear and throat infection.

Eventually, we reached Dulles Airport. I walked confidently to the booth when it was my turn.

What was I going to say? How do I explain this? The man took one look at my expired visa, and my departure stamps.

“How long have you been gone?”

“36 hours” I replied bluntly.

“Yes, I see that. Do you want to explain?”

“Sure. Egypt forbade me from returning to Gaza”.

“I don’t understand- they denied you entry to your own home?”

“I don’t either, and if I did, I wouldn’t be here.”

With that, I was given a a stamp and allowed back inside.

Now that we are warm; clothes; showered, rested and recovered from whatever awful virus we picked up in the bowels of Cairo airport, I keep thinking to myself: what more could I have done?

“The quintessential Palestinian experience,” historian Rashid Khalidi has written, “takes place at a border, an airport, a checkpoint: in short, at any one of those many modern barriers where identities are checked and verified.”

In this place, adds Robyn Creswell, “connection” turns out to be only another word for separation or quarantine: the loop of airports never ends, like Borges’s famous library. The cruelty of the Palestinian situation is that these purgatories are in no way extraordinary but rather the backdrop of daily existence.”

the egyptian collaboration with the zionist enemy is why many egyptian people refuse to normalize with israeli terrorists of any stripe in spite of its government’s normalizing policies. for instance, egyptians oppose a concert of israeli conductor daniel barenboim:

Egyptian police shot and killed a Bedouin in north Sinai on Saturday and seized munitions concealed in his truck believed to be destined for Gaza, Egyptian security official said.

“A Bedouin was shot and killed during an exchange of fire between police and armed men in north Sinai,” the official said.

Police in El-Arish ordered a truck to stop to be searched, but the driver tried to speed away only to crash into a police van.

Four Bedouin jumped out in attempt to get away on foot and one of them died in the shootout that ensued, the official added.

The sources added that the tunnels were used for smuggling goods and other essentials to the Gaza Strip, where 1.5 million Palestinians have been living under strict siege for more than two years.

Sounds of explosions were heard across the border as the security forces wired the entrances of the tunnels detonating them.

The tunnels are located near the neighborhoods of Al Barazil and Al Salam, east of the Palestinian city of Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip.

The Egyptian press on Sunday slammed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah as a war criminal who should be put on trial after he admitted that his militants in Cairo were helping Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Nasrallah said on Friday that a man Cairo is holding on suspicion of planning attacks is a member of his Lebanese Shiite fundamentalist group and was providing logistical help to Hamas, but denied seeking to destabilise Egypt.

“A criminal who knows no mercy” cried the blood-red headline in the state-owned Al-Gomhuria which reserved the whole of its front page for an editorial bashing Nasrallah, repeatedly referring to him as “Sheikh Monkey.”

“Sheikh Monkey, we will not allow you to belittle our judicial symbols, for you are a highway robber, a pure criminal who has killed his own people but we will not allow you to threaten the peace and security of Egypt,” editor Mohammed Ali Ibrahim wrote.

“You and your gang are terrorists and soon… the public prosecutor will issue details of an investigation into your terrorist organisation,” he said.

Al-Ahram newspaper, which is also state-owned, said Nasrallah’s admission that Hezbollah is operating in Egypt provided grounds for prosecution.

“The admission by (Nasrallah) of sending agents into Egypt… puts him at the forefront of accusations and requires dealing with him under Egyptian law, or international law and issuing an (Interpol) red notice for his arrest,” said editorial writer Ahmed Mussa.

“Egypt must start proceedings to try him in an international court. He has admitted to the crime. He must be handed to the Lebanese government as a war criminal,” Karam Gabr, editor of the pro-regime Rose Al-Yussef, told Egyptian television.

Egypt is holding 49 people with alleged links to Hezbollah accused of plotting “hostile operations” in Egypt, among them Sami Shihab, a Lebanese citizen.

In his speech on Friday, Nasrallah confirmed that Shihab was a member of Hezbollah and was working to help Hamas against Israel.

“If helping the Palestinians is a crime, I officially admit to my crime.”

Hezbollah, which is backed by Egypt’s regional rivals Iran and Syria, is a vocal supporter of Hamas, the Islamist rulers of Gaza, and has lashed out at Egypt for closing its border crossing with the Palestinian enclave.

An Israeli cabinet minister said on Sunday that Nasrallah deserved to die.

“Nasrallah deserves death and I hope that those who know what to do with him will act and give him what he deserves,” said Transport Minister Yisrael Katz.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a devastating war in Lebanon in 2006 which ended with Israel failing to achieve any of its aims.

The Egyptian government and the state media is frothing at the mouth over the revelation that Hizbullah had been trying to assist the besieged Gazans across the border which Egypt polices on Israel’s behalf. As usual, they were quick to resort to sectarian incitement invoking the inevitable ‘Persian’ plot. However, most Sunnis (here I would include myself) have nothing but admiration for Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and the resistance, and nothing but contempt for the Egyptian collaborationist government.

For those who don’t know the Egyptian panelist Khalil al-Anani is a ‘visiting fellow’ at the Israel lobby’s key propaganda institution the Saban Center for Middle East Policy (run by Martin Indyk, and underwritten by Israeli-American media mogul Haim Saban).

The Lebanese internal security services stated on Tuesday that it had arrested a retired security officer, from Ramish town in southern Lebanon, on suspicion that he had acted as a spy spy for Israel for more than ten years.

The man arrested was identified as Adeeb A. Initial reports revealed that the man admitted to holding regular meetings with Israeli handlers in Europe, and that he confessed to collaborating with different Israeli intelligence departments for more than 10 years.

The Al Akhbar Lebanese newspaper said that, three months ago, Lebanese security had been monitoring the communications of a group of suspects who were thought to be collaborating with Israel by giving Israeli security information on activities in the north and east of Beirut, and in southern Lebanon.

Adeeb was detained and interrogated last Saturday. His wife, also believed to be a collaborator, was later arrested and interrogated, revealing new information.

The Centrist Voice has significantly scaled back its coverage of Senator Clinton because, for all intensive purposes, she has no realistic chance at becoming the Democratic nominee for president. However, this story is worth mentioning.

As reported by The Huffington Post, Haim Saban, a billionaire and major Clinton fundraiser, offered the Young Democrats of America $1 million if their two superdelegates would pledge their support to Senator Clinton. The offer was made shortly before the Indiana and North Carolina Democratic primaries. The leaders of the YDA considered the offer, but declined because of their membership’s overwhelming support of Senator Obama and moral reservations.

I’ve mentioned Hiam Saban before in this blog. He and his friends threatened Nancy Pelosi a month ago, but today the Huffington Post is reporting Hiam offered $1 million to the Young Democrats of America if they would commit their super-delegates to Hillary.

Haim Saban, the billionaire entertainment magnate and longtime Clinton supporter, denied the allegation. But four independent sources said that just before the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, Saban called YDA President David Hardt and offered what was perceived as a lucrative proposal: $1 million would be made available for the group if Hardt and the organization’s other uncommitted superdelegate backed Clinton.

I know why Saban and the rest of the Big Media crowd are afraid of Obama, but this sinking too low for even the Clinton’s. If you can’t call this bribery, what is it?

Haim Saban, the billionaire television producer of Power Rangers and other properties, supposedly offered to donate $1 million dollars to the Young Democrats of America in the same phone call where he also pushed for two uncommitted superdelegates with the group to endorse Hillary Clinton, according to the Huffington Post.

Saban has denied the claim, while HuffPo claims to have verified the story among no less than four different high ranking members of the YDA. YDA President David Hardt, whom the offer was supposedly made to, has yet to comment on the issue.

Last week, Crystal Strait, a Young Democrats of America member, made national news by announcing her support for Barack Obama as a California superdelegate, effectively tying Obama and Clinton in superdelegate counts.

“This is a couple who have accumulated a vast amount of wealth in a very short period,” said Clinton biographer Sally Bedell Smith.

So on Wednesday, a letter from 20 top Clinton campaign donors sent the following letter to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA):

Dear Madame Speaker,

As Democrats, we have been heartened by the overwhelming response that our fellow Democrats have shown for our party’s candidates during this primary season. Each caucus and each primary has seen a record turnout of voters. But this dynamic primary season is not at an end. Several states and millions of Democratic voters have not yet had a chance to cast their votes.

We respect those voters and believe that they, like the voters in the states that have already participated, have a right to be heard. None of us should make declarative statements that diminish the importance of their voices and their votes. We are writing to say we believe your remarks on ABC News This Week on March 16th did just that.

During your appearance, you suggested super-delegates have an obligation to support the candidate who leads in the pledged delegate count as of June 3rd , whether that lead be by 500 delegates or 2. This is an untenable position that runs counter to the party’s intent in establishing super-delegates in 1984 as well as your own comments recorded in The Hill ten days earlier:

“I believe super-delegates have to use their own judgment and there will be many equities that they have to weigh when they make the decision. Their own belief and who they think will be the best president, who they think can win, how their own region voted, and their own responsibility.’”

Super-delegates, like all delegates, have an obligation to make an informed, individual decision about whom to support and who would be the party’s strongest nominee. Both campaigns agree that at the end of the primary contests neither will have enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination. In that situation, super-delegates must look to not one criterion but to the full panoply of factors that will help them assess who will be the party’s strongest nominee in the general election.

We have been strong supporters of the DCCC [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee]. We therefore urge you to clarify your position on super-delegates and reflect in your comments a more open view to the optional independent actions of each of the delegates at the National Convention in August. We appreciate your activities in support of the Democratic Party and your leadership role in the Party and hope you will be responsive to some of your major enthusiastic supporters.

My analysis of the letter: the Clinton supporters are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT – the Superdelegates have every right to vote how they want, but they also have a commitment to the Democratic Party.  Is voting for Clinton and giving her the win with Superdelegates while she loses the primary/caucus delegate count going to help the party?  No (and it still is possible for her to win if she takes Pennsylvania AND North Carolina, but that’s VERY unlikely).  I mean, heck – I’d LOVE to see Clinton win, especially if it’s the Superdelegates who sway the nomination to her side, but that’s not what’s in the best interest of the party.

MoveOn.org responded with the following:

It’s the worst kind of insider politics — billionaires bullying our elected leaders into ignoring the will of the voters.

But when we all pool our resources, together we’re stronger than the fat cats. So let’s tell Nancy Pelosi that if she keeps standing up for regular Americans, thousands of us will have her back. And we can more than match whatever the CEOs and billionaires refuse to contribute.

Nancy Pelosi (or rather her spokesman, Brendan Daly) issued this statement: “The speaker believes it would do great harm to the Democratic Party if superdelegates are perceived to overturn the will of the voters. This has been her position throughout this primary season, regardless of who was ahead at any particular point in delegates or votes.”

Bill Burton, an Obama Spokesman issued a statement saying, “This letter is inappropriate and we hope the Clinton campaign will reject the insinuation contained in it. Regardless of the outcome of the nomination fight, Sen. Obama will continue to urge his supporters to assist Speaker Pelosi in her efforts to maintain and build a working majority in the House of Representatives.”

But the Clinton campaign (through spokesman Phil Singer) did not “reject the insinuation,” but rather said, “We got a heads up that a letter was being sent, but we didn’t know what was in it and that was it. Our supporters let us know that they were sending something over. I think that the letter speaks for itself. There’s clearly a broad feeling among many Democrats, many people who are active in the party, that the role of superdelegates is to exercise independent judgment, to make their decision based on what is best for the party, what is best for the country.” (emphasis added)

So, they said that the Superdelegates roll is what is best for the country – OK, I can agree that between Obama and Clinton, Clinton is the better (more moderate) choice, but best for the party?  You really think Clinton could beat McCain?  Look at state by state polls – all McCain has to do is win 2 of the 4 following “toss-up” states: Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida.  He’s already essentially got Florida, and he’s pretty much guaranteed to win Ohio if not the other 2.

So, the donors are technically correct, but they’re killing the party.  This just proves that Clinton will use the “Tonya Harding Option” (http://inkslwc.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/hillary-clintons-campaign-using-the-tonya-harding-option/) in order to try to win.
