Photoshopping, airbrushing and now, hair that’s not really there. The beauty industry’s newest smoke

Photoshopping, airbrushing and now, hair that’s not really there. The beauty industry’s newest smoke-and-mirrors mini-scandal focuses on a TV ad in the UK for L’Oreal Elvive Full Restore 5 hair care line.

In the ad, singer Cheryl Cole praises the product line (not available in the U.S.) for making her tresses “full of life, replenished with healthy shine.” But the locks shown in the ad aren’t actually Cole’s at all, but hair extensions.

Cole has been wearing extensions for several years and not trying to hide her hair enhancements, The London Times says. But viewers of this new hair care ad are angry, according to the Web site Stylelist.

L’Oreal’s position is that what they’re doing is completely lawful, according to Stylelist. At one point, a message that says “styled with some natural hair extensions” appears momentarily on the screen. One blink and you might miss it.

Digitally enhanced beauty ads and editorial content have raised consumer ire in the past. Rimmel got into hot water several years ago when Kate Moss’ eyelashes were digitally enhanced for a mascara ad, reports Stylelist. And Self Magazine recently Photoshopped a cover picture of Kelly Clarkson to make her look slimmer, igniting a firestorm of complaints.

Some may say that the ugly truth about the beauty industry is that it causes angst for women when they see pictures of such unrealistically perfect skin, figures and hair. But one could also argue that most viewers these days are cynical enough to know that what’s in ads isn’t really real.

No one looks that perfect all or even most of the time, not even A-listers or supermodels.

A lace wigs is truly the ultimate for any wig wearer. Lace wigs and lace fronts wigs have recently been seen on the streets since the popularity of some well seen celebrities who openly wear the wigs and lace front additions. Lace wigs and lace fronts are the hottest ticket out there. Lace wigs were originally only found in the theatre, the silver screen or on those who had the connections to have one made for them.

During the process of tailoring the lace front wig base the wig maker will take into effect the finished hair extensions and style to be sure that the lace is place so the hair can be ventilated / tied into the base going in the correct direction for the finished style. They are different from wigs as we generally know them because they are usually made or at least “tailored” to fit the individual. A lace wig is made completely of a soft French or Swiss lace in several sections and the wig maker will take darts in the lace to make the material contour the head and because of this it is possible to get a glove tight fit for the wearer.

This is especially important in the top and frontal area as this is where the hair must flow naturally and the way the lace is configured hair direction will be affected if the lace is not placed correctly. Once the wig maker has the cap completed they can do a final fitting to be sure the fit is correct and the front is smooth and tight. If adjustments need to be done this is the time to do it and a final fitting can be done just to check. Once the cap is finished the wig maker can now begin ventilating the hair into the base. This is done with a hooked ventilating needle that can be gauged to pick up as many hairs as needed for a section of the wig. For example in the back and side areas the wig maker may use a needle that picks up 2 to 4 hairs for the knot. This allows for volume without having to fill in quite so many holes in the lace.

The wig maker will usually start at the nape area and work up on the back of the wig followed by the sides and then working on the top. Once the wig maker gets to the top and front area they will usually switch their ventilating needle to only pick up one hair for each knot. This allows the wig maker to make very small tight knots that are virtually impossible to be seen. The real art for the wig maker is of course the frontal area. The single hair knots, placement and hair direction has to look and move like natural hair and should not be noticeable to the eye.

Selection of the appropriate lace wig is a trying proposition due to its availability in many colour

Selection of the appropriate lace wig is a trying proposition due to its availability in many colours and lengths. This choosing has to be proper. Lace wigs specially styled for American, African and Indian hair are readily getable. It is very important to choose a wig according to your societal status. The questions that you may ask yourself are: How often do you wash your hair?, Do you lead a very dynamic lifestyle?, How much time will you be able to devote for hair care? Are you in middle ages when hair extensions are a vexing issue? How are climatic conditions in the place where you reside? If you lead on-the-go life and exercise daily, then a lengthy wig will not be fitting for you. In that case a mid-sized or smaller length one will be viable.

Select the length first. Then you can attempt the style and color of the hair extension. The tinge should be in compliance with your skin color. There may be a cost deviation of $25-$50 depending on length of the wig. You can also prefer a lace wig with a longer length and then tailor-make it to make it smaller; this will however work out to be a little pricier. Therefore picking out the right length is important, if you dont require extra long-hair you should not unnecessarily bear it.

The application of liquid adhesives when you buy a front lace wig should be equally done and in light coats. Read the directions with care. Always use horizontal and vertical strokes like painting with both your hands and always make sure that the previous coat has evaporated before you go for the following one.

Do not forget to use the liquid bond to the lace system. The initial application should be on your scalp, on which you place the unit. It is fundamental to prepare your scalp by cleaning it, then put the skin shield and last bond your lace wig. The skin shield works as a barrier against skin soreness and also raises the strength of the tape adhesives or skin safe liquid.

You may experience that the bond of the lace wig has weakened after a workout, which is quite natural. But desist from moving it as the bond hardens as the body cools. There are many web stores which sell cheap wigs and you can choose your pattern and color from the displays.

the triple set of females seen here appear editorially for the latest issue of vogue nippon. i love the usage of hair pieces & tracks. i think this would’ve been a prime opportunity to, again, used colored models. i really think it would be dope to see our favorite colored females for this piece. all three females are represented by IMG model management. creative hair & make-up with this piece but the lack of color for this theme edit is clear & is still a very large problem for females in the modeling game. images for this edit were shot by daniel jackson. didier mange is to credit for the hair while gucci westman did the make-up.

Just in case you were thinking you’d try bouncing your lovely new motorola off the surface of the nearest lake – DON’T DO IT! Motorola’s recent pebl ad showing a good looking young man skimming his pebl phone across the water where it’s picked up by a pretty woman, carried a warning which could be deemed a little unnecessary:

“Fictionalisation – the pebl phone is not water resistant”

Viewers! Don't try this at home.

Advertising, it seems, is a curious mixture of checking that we don’t believe something which is entirely implausible, and trying to make us believe something equally implausible. Take for example the L’Oreal ad featuring the lovely Cheryl Cole telling us how her hair feels full of body, replenished and has got its Mojo back. What she omits to say is that this process has nothing to do with shampoo but more to do with the 10 inch hair extensions she had put in place recently.

Things are not quite as they seem in adverts sometimes - Cheryl's hair is great, but normal, after all.

As one who has confessed on here already to a boob job I am definitely not against the occasional bit of fakery, but when it’s being used to trick teenage girls into believing that some rubbish shampoo will make their hair look entirely different then it’s a whole new ball game. It would be like using Jordan to advertise wonderbras.

Of course there are also lots of ads which make occasionally sitting through the commercial break bearable….

Guinness are full of great ideas for advertising and they don't try and bulls**t us into believing something ridiculous

However if you have to get your roots retouched please visit a Hair Extensions specialist that is comfortable with coloring and Hair Extensions. If not you can risk damaging and destroying your hair extensions.

Color on the bonds can disintegrate them and shorten the lifetime of the extensions.

WARNING: DO NOT rinse hair with high salon jets as it may cause matting. And please be advised often times stylists will say they can do something just to get you in the chair.

Brushing your hair: Brush through twice a day with a soft bristled brush. When brushing hair, please

Brushing your hair:

Brush through twice a day with a soft bristled brush.

When brushing hair, please start from the bottom and work your way up little by little, holding your hair with the other hand near the roots.

Do not comb hair from the top down as it may pull.

Respect your roots; NEVER comb your hair from the roots.

Detangling on your terms- Make your own detangling spray with sulfate free conditioner. Simply mix 1-part conditioner with 2-parts water in a spray bottle and apply to the extension hair each morning. Be sure to finger comb your hair before using a comb or brush.

Washing:

Wash with a sulfate free regimen.

Wash as you need to, frequent shampooing may damage even the best extension hair. (Less shampooing will also help prolong your color).

Shampoo in warmer to cooler water rather than hot water.

Keep the hair clean, when dirt accumulates (including sweat) hair tangles.

Use good quality moisturizing hair products but avoid heavier conditioners at the root or around the bonds (will cause slipping).

When in the shower, take the time to run your fingers through your hair to work out any knotting at the root area.

Avoid oil slicks.

LONG HAIR TIP: use a regular conditioner at the root and a deeper conditioner at the ends of the hair to balance out the porosity.

Sleeping and Activities:

Tie hair back when sleeping to prevent pulling and tangling

Try to sleep on a satin pillowcase or wrap head in a satin scarf to avoid tangling.

Maintaining style:

Hair applied is 100% human Remy hair so styles away just keep heat away from bonds as it could cause melting.

When blow-drying hold the dryer about 12” away from your head and sweep the entire head rather than focused heat.

When blow-drying use a cooler temperature when drying root areas.

Dos and Don’ts:

Do not use hot tubs or saunas as this can break down bonds.

Do not use heat on bonds

Do use a cool temperature hair dryer.

Do not go to bed with wet hair.

Do tie your hair back in a braid when sleeping or being active.

Do use a satin pillowcase.

DO wear a tight swim cap when swimming; swimming in heavily chlorinated water with fusion extensions can weaken the bond.

Do not pull or pick at your bonds.

Do your regular maintenance check (recommended every 6 weeks).

Do not be alarmed – The average person loses anywhere between 50-100 natural hairs per day, keep in mind when your extensions are removed the hair that would have typically shed is secured within the bond when applied so the hair would not have naturally shed. So it may seem like you are losing more hair but really it is the hair that you would have shed naturally.

Maintain long hair by following a few basic rules:

Keep hair clean and conditioned.

Use a high quality conditioner designed for specific hair types. Leave-in conditioner is also a good choice.

Trim long hair every 6 weeks or so to minimize split ends. Go to a professional hairstylist to get an even trim. Get a small trim regularly to help keep the length of the hair smooth by not having to get a lot cut off because of longer split ends.

Apply thermal protector product to the hair before straightening to protect hair from becoming damaged.

It is normal for long hair to get a little knotty at times do not be alarmed. But there is a HUGE difference between matted and tangled. If matted go see your hair extension specialist ASAP.

If hair has a little static spray a hairbrush with hairspray and run it through your hair…don’t spray hair directly. Or take a fabric softener sheet and rub it over a hairbrush or comb and then brush. In the salon sometimes used are creams or matte pomades applied by finger combing the hair at the ends to weigh the flyaway done a bit. A recommended hair spray I as a stylist always use for static and it WORKS is Matrix’s Shape maker, which is a partly wax and partly hairspray spray.

Stylist Tip: It is always recommended to get regular trims when you are working towards growing your hair out or wanting to maintain a healthy look. When you are getting a trim you are cutting off the split ends (I recommend all of my clients to come in every 6-8 weeks).

When you are hesitant to cut your hair, think about this…have you ever seen a split tree branch? The tree branch often when it is split forks at the break and as you split the break more the branch become weaker, thinner and sometimes shorter do to the split thinning and breaking off of itself. Now the ONLY way to get rid of that split is to cut it at the split to get rid of it otherwise the split will just keep riding up the shaft. Your hair works the same way. SO GET REGUALR TRIMS!!! You will be amazed how fuller and thicker your hair will look at the ends after regular appointments.

Stopped by the beauty shop to look around – it’s bright and crammed floor to ceiling with stuff you didn’t know existed. I wanted to keep taking pictures of these nylon hair extensions, but employees shooed me out. I’d even politely asked permission before I got out the camera. Maybe that was the problem.

You also want to mess up the texture—when the hair is smooth and you can’t see the layers, that’s when it starts to look like a helmet. Ditch the hair spray and pick up a bottle of spray wax or use a great pomade. Blend throughout and then blow-dry the hair up and over to the opposite side of the head. When you let it back down, it will hang flat, without that dated under-flip.

Clip on hair extensions and clip in hair extensions is the same thing. They are a man-made synthetic

Clip on hair extensions and clip in hair extensions is the same thing. They are a man-made synthetic hair used by women to give length volume and lift to their natural hair. Synthetic hair is different from human hair extensions because they are man-made consisting of a substance called kanekalon. It is also easier to maintain than human hair extensions.

Synthetic hair extensions come in a vast range of colors from natural like brown, black, blonde to not so natural like blue, pink, green and yellow. The choice of which hair color you opt for is up to you.

Apart from a huge range of colors that are available for clip on hair extensions they also come in different textures. You can get straight, wavy, curly and spiral hair extensions.

The main advantage of clip in hair extensions is choice. The choice to go with a long or short hair, be a blonde or a brunette, have straight hair or curly. You can change your look to suit your clothes or to copy a particular celeb.

Clip on hair extensions can be very long with lengths from shoulder length hair to a “Cher” like length that flows down the back. Whether the texture is curly, straight of waved the look is dramatic. The clip on style of hair extensions is very easy for a woman to use but these are only for temporary looks. They are as easy to use as the barrettes that children put in their hair.

Clip on hair extensions are a light weight product that do not feel like you have something pressing down on your head. They are easy to attach and not noticeable from your natural hair. With a little practise you should be able to apply the hair extensions in a matter of minutes.

Most women want to emulate the celeb they have seen on tv. or a super model on the catwalk. Believe it or not most celebs and models are not born with long luscious hair. It is the hair extensions that they use which is giving them that look, you can have that too.

The modern hair extension products are well made and the hair looks natural whether it is synthetic or natural hair. With different types of hair extension products, women are free to choose the best method for adding length and volume to their natural hair.

If you’ve been reading this blog at all for the past week and a half, you’ll surely know that Stacey

If you’ve been reading this blog at all for the past week and a half, you’ll surely know that Stacey and her Blondetourage made our way to Contessa 21 on November 1st. Suffice it to say, it was a big deal! There was a multitude of planning dresses, accessories, shoes and of course, hair. My extensions were no exception. By the time the Friday before rolled around, my additions were looking dry and ragged to say the least. All the ladies at Blonde made short work of my problem tresses.

First, it had been about 6 weeks since my last colour, so re-growth touch-up was a must have. Handling my own hair and the extensions were no problem for the Blonde girls. My re-growth was touched up, and the far-too-blonde extensions were treated to some much-needed low-lights (which blend way better with my natural hair). Surprisingly, there wasn’t very much difference between colour with the extensions than when it was just me and my real mane!

Next, we moved over to the sinks where dryness was the next order. The ladies applied Moisture and Shine treatments from Kevin.Murphy and I sat, enjoying the pampering. The treatments sat as we continued to plot and plan what we were wearing.

Finally, once coloured and treated, my hair was ready for a trim. Finally, all the extra length that had been driving me crazy was gone. I was cut, trimmed and textured. Once finished, the colour and cut made me fall in love with the length once again.

What Stacey and the girls did notice was that this particular brand of extensions isn’t as easy to work with as some of the others they’ve had exposure to. Stacey recommended Great Lengths if I was to do it again. And given the dryness I’ve been dealing with, I have to agree.

We can not of course forget the evening of the big event itself. Some of the Blonde ladies and I had attended an event where Kevin Murphy demonstrated some of his favourite styles for shoots and clients. We decided to give one of his looks a try. Using a curling iron, Kathryn curled my tresses, pinned them into place to cool, added a healthy dose of Kevin.Murphy session spray. And then we waited… The results were incredible! I have yet to put curl in these extensions that holds. But they held up, all night long!

I was rather delighted by how well the ladies managed my “fake” hair. They never cease to amaze me with their talent. But I guess that’s why Stacey is the proud owner of a Contessa!

Got extension questions. The ladies and I would be more than happy to discuss our experiences with you. Give us a shout at the salon and let’s talk length!

There are many different types’ hair extensions available today, such as weaves, clip in, adhe

There are many different types’ hair extensions available today, such as weaves, clip in, adhesive based fusion and metal tubing.

Clip in hair extensions are the least damaging and easiest to apply. Clip in hair extensions can give you more length, volume, texture and also allow you to add colour. You clip them into your own hair by separating your hair and starting at the nape of the neck. The amount of clips you use is up to you depending on the level of volume that you require. You simply clip the extensions to your own hair, working your way up your head. You open the clips and face them to the scalp then snap them into place.

For best results with clip in hair extensions you should style your own hair and the hair extensions separately. Clip in hair extensions can be worn all day and night, however you should take them out before sleeping. Clip in hair extensions are sometimes just worn for a night out and other people wear them everyday. This is because clip in hair extensions are versatile and quick to put in and take out. You don’t require a professional to fit them for you; you can do it yourself at home. There is no messing around with glue, meaning there is no damage to your hair. Clip in hair extensions are also reasonable in price. They are one of the most affordable forms of hair extensions but do not lack in quality because of this, most are made using 100% human hair. You can choose from lengths such as 11″ through to 28″.

Another form of hair extensions is bonding/sealing. This is when your real hair is sectioned and the extensions are plaited to your own hair and painted with a bonding solution, this seals the extension around the hair. This form of hair extension can last up to four months, after the four months the bond starts to loosen. This type of extension must be attached by a professional as they can be extremely difficult to do at home yourself. If done yourself at home the attachments can be hard to handle and you run the risk of ruining your hair as well as getting uneven length that will look un-professional.

One other method that you may or may not be aware of is when it comes to hair extensions is the fusion method. This is when 20-50 strands of human hair extensions have warm protein glue placed on them and a plastic template separates sections of the hair, keeping it away from the scalp. Each piece of hair extension is attached with glue to your natural hair and the attachment of hair to hair extension is pulled through a hole in the plastic template. You should roll the extensions and you’re natural hair together until a smooth bond is formed. This type of hair extension is a very long process and has to, with no exceptions be done on clean, washed hair, without the use of conditioner, otherwise the extensions won’t stick correctly. When the time comes to remove hair extensions that have been fused on you should always get it done at a salon as the bond between the hair and extension needs to be softened and cracked; this is done with fusion remover and specialist tools

The last form of extensions that I’m going to mention is Bonding Weaves. These are very similar to clip in extensions; you cut a length of human hair to fit your head shape. The extensions are then glued to your head just below the parting. You can get the glue to do this from most hair and wig stores. This form of hair extension is safe to do at home and the removal of these hair extensions can also be done at home as the remover can also be purchased from the same stores as the glue. You should make sure you have the remover before you put the extensions in so you can guarantee you can get them out when needed.

There are many other forms of hair extensions, but the ones mentioned above are the most common and the ones you are most likely to come across when searching for the right type for you.

There are many different ways in which you can attach real hair extensions. The method you use will

There are many different ways in which you can attach real hair extensions. The method you use will mainly depend on what salon you go to, and what kind of extensions you choose to have. Although they are all very straightforward, it is useful to know a bit more about the different methods so you are aware of what the attachment entails. The first point you need to know is that attaching hair extensions should never hurt the wearer, regardless of the method so if you experience any discomfort, you need to speak to your stylist as soon as possible. Hair extensions are also believed to be able to be worn for up 4 months, but some stylists suggest that extensions should be worn for no longer than 2 weeks. This is something you can discuss with your stylist during your consultation.

Fusion is one of the more permanent methods of attachment and is the method in which extension hair is applied in wefts. Infusion attachment is when the hair is attached strand by strand. In both cases, the hair is attached using either a hot or cold form of the adhesive formula. The formula is often a keratin based product as this is known to be less damaging to both your hair and the extension hair as is a natural based protein which can also be found in your natural hair and your nails.

Bonding is one of the most commonly known methods as it is much quicker than fusion, but also as it is the most temporary method which will last up to 8 weeks, so is perfect for those who don’t want to commit to a more permanent method of attachment. Bonding consists of using a glue or adhesive material which is added on to the weft of the extension hair and then applied to the roots of the wearers’ hair. These are then removed with a bonding remover which dissolves the bonding formula for an easy removal.

Micro attachments can involve links, sleeves, shells or locs which the extension hair is added to before being attached the individuals’ hair. Some of the micro products can be made out of special polymer materials, and can often be matched to the hair colour or be clear so that they are less visible on the head. Some of these micro methods are mainly used on over processed, very fine or silky straight hair as this type of hair may have trouble holding bonding formulas or adhesives which could lead to their extensions falling out and a waste of money for the customer. However, the advantage of using a micro method is that the shells and links can be used up to three times, giving the wearer more value for money.

Whichever method you feel is best for you, it is important that you firstly discuss with your stylist what kind of look you want and how long you ideally want to wear your extensions for. Most importantly though, you need to let your stylist give you the advice of which method would be best for you so you get the best quality for your hair. By Suzanne McMicholas

It can be difficult to find a hair extension stylist near you, and you don’t always have the time to

It can be difficult to find a hair extension stylist near you, and you don’t always have the time to drive hours to get your hair done. Luckily, several online resources are available to help.

Here is a helpful, condensed list:

The Hair Extension Salon Locator

This site lists hair extension salons by state. It also features articles on the care of hair extensions and hair loss information. Additionally, they have supplies and training resources.

HairBonz

This is the website for the HairBonz hair extension system. You can call 1-888-693-HAIR to find a listing of hair extension salons using the HairBonz system.

Hair Boutique

This informative site has links to hair extension salons. Unfortunately, the information is listed alphabetically and cannot be searched by city or state. However, if you have the patience to scan the listings you just might find a local salon.

Black Beauty Care Directory

This site is specifically for African-American beauty concerns, and lists salons that cater to African hair. Information is categorized by state for easy access.

Another way to find a local hair extension salon is to type “Houston hair extension salons” or “hair extensive salons near Houston” in a search engine. Of course, use your own city name in place of Houston!

You can also use your Yellow Pages to find hair extension salons.

One of the best ways to find a top-quality salon is by word of mouth. If a friend or family member has beautiful extensions, ask for a reference.

No matter where you located your hair extension salon, make sure that your stylist is qualified to apply the extensions. He or she should be a licensed cosmetologist with ample experience in applying the type of extensions you are considering. Many experts recommend that you meet some of the stylist’s other clients and find out if they are happy with their extensions. At the very least, ask to see a portfolio with before and after pictures.

Hair is the richest ornament of women said Martin Luther, hair is everything some others say and hair is your crowning glory they all say.

Hair extension is the perfect resolution out of this for any woman. Long hair and Lace Wigs is something that many women desire to have but few are chance enough to have this naturally.

Something which is in vogue whether it is about lace front wigs hairstyle, dress, shoes or jewellery does not mean that one has to adopt that. The trick lies in select what suits you and what does not, and this is completely applicable for hairstyles. Natural Hair extension is one process that you can make use for increasing the length of your hair or the volume of your hair.

The hair is a very important component of your overall look and understandably you will not like to take any chances with this. Make sure that you see the stylist before undergoing the process for a consultation session. Talk to the stylist about the whole thing, whatever doubts or queries that you have in your mind must be clarified before you undergo the process. Hair extension is a complicated process, so you must make sure that the stylist has the experience and the ability to do hair extensions without any hassles. Go for natural hair extensions as opposed to artificial ones. Natural hair always looks better and make sure that the colour and texture match your natural hair perfectly.

Scheli, is a recognized specialist on the subject of Hair extensions. She is the creator of the popular signature collection Lavish. Her website, www.hairworksintl.com provides a wealth of information including a resource centre packed with instructional videos, collections and how to guides.

A lace wig is truly the definitive for some wig wearer. Lace wigs and lace fronts wigs have freshly been seen on the streets since the attractiveness of some well seen celebrity who openly wear the wigs and lace front additions. Lace wigs and lace fronts are the newest ticket out there. Lace wigs were initially only found in the theatre, the silver screen or on those who had the connections to have one made for them.

Through the method of dressmaking the lace front wig base the wig maker will take into effect the finished hair extensions and style to be sure that the lace is place so the hair can be ventilated / tied into the base going in the accurate direction for the complete style.

Once a lace wig is completed, dressed or styled and placed on the head a small amount of lace adhesive is placed on the skin where the edge of the lace will sit, allowed to get tacky and then the lace is pressed into the adhesive where it disappears into the skin. Once the adhesive is completely dry normal daily make up can be applied and the wearer is ready to go.
