Molly Hartley(Bennett) is haunted by…something…sort of.

Well, it’s October, and I figured I’d get in the Halloween mood by watching a scary movie.  I’ll let you know when I find one.  This movie is not scary or interesting or entertaining.  It is short, though, so it’s got that going for it.

It’s a big collection of horror movie cliches featuring a very dull cast of characters.  There’s the false scares (dogs, birds, etc) accompanied by loud blasts of music, lots of mirrors, whispers that only the young female lead can hear, spooky restrooms, conflict with the mean girl at school, and an overzealous religious girl trying to convince Molly that she needs to seek God.  All of which is filmed boringly and features low production values.

If you want to know more about the story (for some reason), it involves Molly having headaches and weird visions that she thinks is a sure sign that she’s going crazy just like her mother did.  Her mom tried to kill Molly when she was younger because she believes Molly is destined to be taken over by something evil.  I don’t want to spoil anything for you, but…Molly’s mom is probably right.

My advice?  Watch something else.

The symptoms of having a tumor in your nasal cavity are basically the same as the symptoms of being haunted by some sort of ultimate evil.

10 – 3 for being cliched and unoriginal – 2.3 for dull characters – .4 for a stupid, tonally inconsistent ending = 4.3

Los Angeles, CA, September 29, 2009—AFI FEST 2009 presented by Audi today announced films scheduled for Halloween, all of which celebrate the horror genre. Joe Dante’s THE HOLE, Sean Byrne’s THE LOVED ONES, Ted Kotcheff’s WAKE IN FRIGHT and Michael Stephenson’s BEST WORST MOVIE will screen on Saturday, October 31 at the Mann Chinese 6 Theatres in Hollywood.

Presented in 3-D, Joe Dante’s family friendly thriller THE HOLE marks an auspicious return to the big screen by the celebrated genre director after 11 years. In the film, two young brothers stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that houses an evil force that can create a physical manifestation of their deep-seated fears. After unwittingly unleashing the force, the brothers must team with the teenage girl next door to find a way to defend themselves against the darkness. The film stars Chris Massoglia, Haley Bennett, Nathan Gamble, Bruce Dern and Teri Polo.

THE HOLE will mark the first time a feature film has been presented in 3-D at AFI FEST or it’s precursor, Filmex since Paul Morrissey’s FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN screened in 1977. Michael Medaglia’s short film THE RATSNITCH ANGEL was presented in 3-D in 2006.

The Midnight Madness Audience Award winner of this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Sean Byrne’s THE LOVED ONES is an Australian thriller about a troubled high school senior who finds himself trapped in a bizarre “prom” and fighting for his life after he is abducted by a psychotic father-and-daughter pair. The film stars Xavier Samuel (who will star in ECLIPSE, the third installment of the TWILIGHT film saga), Robin McLeavy, John Brumpton and Victoria Thaine. THE LOVED ONES screening will be sponsored by Fangoria Entertainment.

Also hailing from Australia is Ted Kotcheff’s underground classic WAKE IN FRIGHT. Originally released in 1971, the film was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival and has developed a reputation as one of Australia’s great, lost films. Recently recovered and restored, the film is a brutal and uncompromising thriller about a young teacher who arrives in a rough outback mining town planning to stay overnight before catching a plane to Sydney. However, his dealings with the hard-drinking, violent locals and a harrowing kangaroo hunt plunge the man headlong toward his own destruction. The film stars Donald Pleasence and Gary Bond.

Michael Stephenson’s documentary BEST WORST MOVIE looks at both the behind-the-scenes origins of TROLL 2 and the film’s journey to become a cult classic years after its initial release. Two decades later, Stephenson, the legendarily inept film’s child star, unravels the improbable, heartfelt story of an Alabama dentist turned cult movie icon and an Italian filmmaker as they try to come to terms with this genuine, internationally revered cinematic failure.

Also screening on Halloween will be the previously announced South Korean Academy Award pick, Bong Joon-ho’s MOTHER and the acclaimed RED RIDING TRILOGY of films.

“These are films that are targeted specifically to AFI FEST audiences looking for excitement on Halloween,” said AFI FEST Director of Programming Robert Koehler. “They run the gamut from the family friendly scares of THE HOLE, to the incredible Australian duo of THE LOVED ONES and WAKE IN FRIGHT, to the intense crime dramas of the RED RIDING TRILOGY.”

“Rollicking cult movie worship and Ozploitation lead the way in our celebration of Halloween at AFI FEST this year,” added AFI FEST Senior Programmer Lane Kneedler.  “We are thrilled to be embracing fringe filmmaking and alternative cinema once again as core components of our festival.  Joe Dante returns to coming-of-age horror with the 3D film “The Hole,” which is essentially a psychological thriller imparting a lesson.

Luckily, Dante and writer Mark L. Smith (“Vacancy”) never get too preachy with their message.

“The Hole” needs strong marketing to find its audience, however. Today’s adolescents, at whom the film is aimed, have grown up on more hardcore stuff and probably aren’t familiar with the director’s biggest hit, “Gremlins.” On the other hand, older Dante buffs may be turned off by a teen movie. But the ride is enjoyable, and there is enough camp, warmth and chills to make this a family film.

After their latest move around the country with their mother (Teri Polo), brothers Dane (Chris Massoglia) and Lucas (Nathan Gamble), along with their neighbor Julie (Haley Bennett), discover a bottomless pit in the basement of their new house. In reopening it, they unleash a mysterious, evil force that seems to haunt only those who have looked inside the hole.

Adults should figure out why before the kids do, as each character is forced to face his or her innermost demons. A moody teen terrified with unresolved family issues, Dane will have to protect the little brother he usually shuns, and Julie will make amends with a tragedy from the past. Gamble draws the short straw in his climax, in a sequence with a clown that never scares. Then again, a 10-year-old’s fears can only run so deep.

The young stars do fine with their material though they don’t always hit all the emotional notes. But that’s to be expected with the kind of life-changing catharses that can only happen in the movies. Massoglia looks like a young Zac Efron, if that’s not a contradiction in terms, and ably carries the film, while Bruce Dern is great in his cameo.

The 3D is used to good effect, though maybe not enough. It’s great when we’re in the hole looking up at the characters or when a baseball is tossed in our faces, but “The Hole” would probably work just as well in 2D. The film’s finale benefits the most from the technique, in an off-kilter set straight that looks like a video game of “Alice in Wonderland.”

After moving into a new town, brothers Dane and Lucas and their neighbour Julie discover a bottomless hole in their basement that brings their nightmares to life. With shadows lurking around every corner, they must face their darkest fears in order to put an end to the mystery of the hole.

Director Joe Dante (Gremlins and The Howling) will be bringing us “The Hole”. Chris Massoglia, and Haley Bennett, play two brothers that move to a new town and discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their house that brings their nightmares to life. Together with with neighbor played by actress Haley Bennett (The Haunting of Molly Hartley) they must face their darkest fears in order to ut an end to the mystery of the hole.

The movie, written by Mark L. Smith (Vacancy), was filmed in Vancouver, Canada. “It’s for the younger horror set,” Bennett explains in an interview with the horror buffs at ShockTillYouDrop.com:

“It’s very psychological. We all have fears, especially when we’re younger. I was afraid of clowns. It’s not my fear in the film, but it would be my fear in my life. And the hole feeds on your deepest, darkest fear. You don’t really know if everyone else is seeing what you’re seeing. We’re creating our own realities, but it does happen that we start seeing each other’s fears. We have to face them in order to set us free.”

“The Hole” should be coming to a theater near you sometime in the year 2010.

The only nice thing I can say about this film is that all of the actors and actresses are attractive. This film bills itself as a horror film yet there is no real horror or scary moments at least not until the end when you realize you sat through the same thing. It’s not even suspenseful enough to be a thriller. It just seems like things happen randomly with no rhyme or reason. Half the characters are made to seem important but don’t add to the movie, Story or plot at all they are just unnecessary.

The film plays like a loose version of ROSEMARY’S BABY but you never even learn A) why they want her particularly B) What awaits her after she turns 18

It’s not even hinted at maybe they were hoping the movie would be successful enough they would have shown it and answered all the questions in a sequel. But it shouldn’t have been left this ambiguous. This film wouldn’t even pass of the syfy channel as a original movie maybe the Lifetime Channel.

The film is just weak in every way imaginable. I’m surprised the director knew how to get images onto film that is how inept this film feels.

With a cast this pretty maybe the money would have been better spent on a bad teenage sex comedy. This film feels like a first draft that needs more input to go into it before filming. I have no problem if a horror film wants to play it clean with little to no violence but implies that there is, But with skimping on all of that and the film has no scares, tension or jump moments. Exactly what type of film is this supposed to be then?

    The annual Comic-Con is fast approaching, and this year’s event, taking place from July 23-26, shines a brighter spotlight than ever on Hollywood.

  Disney on Thrusday announced its heavy-hitter lineup — John Lasseter, Robert Zemeckis and Tim Burton — while networks and cable, from CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” and USA’s “Burn Notice,” are also well-represented.

Baseado no romance de John Grogan, a adaptação de Marley & Eu para a telona vem conquistando mais espectadores à cada semana que fica nos cinemas. Há 3 semanas em cartaz, ocupa o 4º lugar nas bilheterias dos EUA e o 3º lugar no Brasil.

Dirigido por David Frankel (O Diabo Veste Prada), o filme é uma adaptação do livro do jornalista e colunista de Philadelphia Inquirer, que virou um dos Best seller mais comentados dos últimos anos.

Marley & Eu conta a história dos jornalistas John (Owen Wilson) e Jenny (Jennifer Aniston), dois jovens apaixonados que estão começando uma vida juntos em uma nova cidade e sem muitas preocupações, até o dia em que John compra um labrador de presente para Jenny.

Seu nome é Marley, e rapidamente cresce e se transforma em uma criatura enorme com mais de 40 quilos, que arromba portas, come todos os tipos de roupas e objetos e pula em todo mundo.

John acaba virando colunista do jornal em que trabalha, e assim, começa a descrever sua experiência com o cão que passou a fazer parte de sua família e conquistou a todos.

O filme possui inúmeras cenas engraçadas, mas também é bem emocionante, e é bem capaz que a grande maioria dos espectadores não consiga segurar as lágrimas ao longo do final do longa. Confira nos cinemas!
