Enemies Of The Cross

The apostle Paul had led a life of extremes — and with good personal reasons. As a “good” Pharisee, he totally opposed Jesus and all Christians. Because Paul had no understanding of how Jesus really was the fulfillment of all sorts of Old Testament prophecies, all he could think was that Jesus was a blasphemer and liar of the worst sorts. In his zeal to get rid of all blasphemers, Paul persecuted the early church by dragging Christians out of their homes and throwing them into prison. He witnessed against them and approved of their being stoned to death.

Such was his self-righteousness, pride, and zeal for getting things done his way. But, when Christ appeared to him and revealed the truths of God’s plan of salvation, Paul was mortified to realize that he had actually been opposing God with all the hatred that was in his heart. The resurrected Jesus let Paul know that he was to become a preacher of truth and suffer many trials and tribulations because of his preaching. Then, in a complete turn-around, Paul humbly accepted his lot from the Lord, realizing the utter importance of being totally obedient to God Almighty — and not to his misguided feelings.

That said, as we read Paul’s letters to various churches, we can easily see how he was always instructing people to live on the straight and narrow path of obedience to the Lord in truth — not according to their own personal feelings, desires, or understandings — but with faith in God’s love and salvation through Jesus Christ.

When the Philippians were struggling to live for God in the right way, they often were challenged by so-called fellow Christians, who wanted to force ungodly ways upon them. Because they were confused, Paul’s heart was breaking for them — and he had to warn them in Philippians 3:18-19,

For many walk, of whom I often told you, and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose god is their appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds on earthly things.

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…

Paul could say that because he himself had been one of those “enemies of the cross”. But, after instruction from the Lord and time in deep searching of God’s word, Paul had all the proof he needed to realize that salvation truly is in Christ alone — no matter what the opinion of the world might be. With his positive assurance, Paul was now willing to suffer many great hardships and even die for the truth of the gospel.

As Paul willingly suffered, he refused to back down from the truth in an effort to have his punishments lessened. Now, Paul had a zeal for the truth — and not a zeal for promoting his own opinion. As Paul suffered beatings and imprisonment, he was honored to be counted worthy by the Lord to have an opportunity to stand up for the gospel. Paul even joyfully endured punishments, because he realized God’s love for him.

In the strength of God’s love and the promise of heaven, Paul says in Philippians 4:13,

I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

And — so can we, as we lean on the love and salvation of Jesus Christ. Instead of being an “enemy of the cross”, figure out God’s love for each of us by studying His word — and know that you can have confidence in His salvation — so much so that you are always glad and willing to live and witness according to His eternal truths — and not according to misguided feelings.

As we let God strengthen us in His truths, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, thank You for changing this “enemy of the cross” into a true witness of Your love on the cross. May I always serve You honorably because of the greatness of Your love and sacrifice for me.”

Love,

baby i've been here before
i've seen this room and i've walked this floor
i used to live alone before i knew you
i've seen your flag on the marble arch
but love is not a victory march
it's a cold and it's a broken hallelujah

A Sacrifice Of Praise

We all have times of deep sorrow — times when troubles seem greater than we can bear. But, no matter what our problem, there is one thing that will always remain true — “God is love.” 1 John 4:8

Our heavenly Father is fully aware of our every pain, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual. He knows and cares about our every thought and feeling. But, all God’s care does not “feel” true when we are in despair. It’s a fact that our feelings just don’t know what is true and we cannot depend on them to guide us.

Feelings can be very wishy-washy powers that can easily mislead us into thinking God does not love us. Weighed down under all sorts of confusing emotions, it’s hard to think about the eternal truth in John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

That truth has been the culmination of many prophecies over thousands of years — all coming true in Christ Jesus. So, what should we be paying attention to? Our pains and sorrows? Our feelings and desires? All those things come and go. They are constantly changing with the circumstances. But, the love of God is a constant. It never changes. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today, yes and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

So, what’s the point?

As we face all our trials, there is one thing we can do. Because the love of God is eternally true and salvation in Jesus Christ is always certain, we can trust those facts and gladly live according to them. Because of that Hebrews 13:15 tells us,

Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.

It is because God’s love is proven in Christ that we can trust that love. When we trust that love, we can , and should, make the “sacrifice of praise” in the midst of our trials and tribulations. The “sacrifice of praise” is just voicing our love and trust in God’s love for us. So, whatever the depths of our sadness might be, we praise our Lord for the faithfulness of His love and for carrying us through our earthly problems — until we reach our heavenly home.

That is a real “sacrifice” on our part because our emotions are trying to force us into becoming bitter, complaining, and distrustful of our Lord. We need to face the truth and admit God’s love. It’s only right that we always make the “sacrifice of praise” in every circumstance.

The “sacrifice of praise” — have you made it lately?

As we look to God and remember the depths of His love for us in Jesus, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, I praise You for loving me, even when I’m not very lovable. Thank you!”

Love,
Margaret

All That God Has Prepared Everything in heaven is so far beyond our wildest imaginations, none of it

All That God Has Prepared

Everything in heaven is so far beyond our wildest imaginations, none of it can ever be described in human terms. We will have to wait until we experience it. We can only wonder about it when 1 Corinthians 2:9 says,

Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
And which have not entered the heart of man,
All that God has prepared for those who love Him.

As we think about that, we can take comfort in what Jesus says in John 14:1-3,

Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places;
if it were not so, I would have told you;
for I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again, and receive you to Myself;
that where I am, there you may be also.

If we are wondering if all of our struggling here on earth can possibly be worth the “joys” of heaven, here are just a few of the things that Revelation 21 describes about heaven. Do you want this as a part of your eternity — or not?

Verse 18: And the material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.

Verse 21: And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

Verse 23: And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

Verse 27: And nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

As we face the world around us day after day, it is pretty easy to lose sight of our heavenly home. We can’t afford to lose sight of our goal. When a runner is in a race, he cannot look back — or get off track — or slow down — or forget where he is going. We’ve got to pay attention to our coach in Hebrews 12:1-2,

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

As we get our priorities on the right track, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, You have kept all of Your promises for a Savior over thousands of years. And now You give me the promises of a home in heaven, where peace, glory, and joy cannot be measured. Lord, keep me on the right track, so that I may ever be with You.”

Love,
Margaret

Praise the Lord when I’m weak

Praise the Lord when I’m strong

Praise the Lord when I fall

Praise the Lord when I stand

Dance, my soul, when angels sing

Hallelujah, Christ is King

Hopefully this will be recorded at some point. I’ve got the tune and rhythm going in my head every day, so I just need some way to record it. Just get a really slow, Southern-bluesy-minor tune in your head with stomping feet and pick axes hitting rocks keeping rhythm. Maybe you’ll get it.

Jeff Buckley… being the best.

The votes have been tabulated for our “Hallelujah” Challenge and while it’s no shocker that the winning version is super-fan powered Jeff Buckley, the big surprise was that Brandi Carlile’s version got no votes! None. Zero. I would have thought our Ravensdale girl would have gotten a few votes for sentimental reasons alone. Plus the girl’s got the vocal AND emotional range to give the song the fuel it needs to resonate. But it’s just too challenging to compete with the juggernaut that is Jeff Buckley (or a Jeff Buckley fan).

It is now official. The greatest, most definitive version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is by the late, great Jeff Buckley. Let’s give the version a proper victory lap by listening to it one more time:

Shawn,

Throughout a 30 year career in and on radio, I found a lot of struggle involved in trying to achieve audio alchemy. Artists try to find their own voice, A&R departments try to match written words with voices to sing them, and music directors walk the tightrope… trying to balance the politics and conflicting agendas of music industry, audience and sales departments.

I have three quotes that helped me with perspective along the strange trip:

“True creativity is a rare gift. The 99% of the population who do not have it have mixed emotions about those who do.” – Steve Allen

“Not everything that can be counted counts and not everything that counts can be counted.” – Albert Einstein

“The problem for the artist is that entertainment is a business. The problem for the businessman is that entertainment is an art.” — Garson Kanin

I once attended a seminar where the presenter played three different versions of a passage from the same composition for cello and piano. The first was technically proficient. The second had a better sense of ensemble. The third was a totally transcendent experience: Pablo Casals!

And I think that’s part of what I look for in a cover for adults… the EA (emotional authenticity) in REAL… credibility. The RL (real loud), not so much, better for kids.

With specific regard to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”:

Choices you offered…

The winner, Jeff Buckley (brooding, ringing solo guitar) evokes memories of “The West Wing”. In Season Three’s finale, President Bartlet debates how to deal with the impending visit of a foreign official, whom U.S. intelligence officers have conclusively linked to terrorists. While in New York City for a Catholic fund raiser at a long Broadway play called “The War of the Roses” he reaches a decision to assassinate the Qumari Defense Minister. Machiavelli beats Moses.

kd lang (compassionate, soothing, piano/guitar/stings) offers a semi-angelic assurance it’ll be alright. Too optimistic.

Brandi Carlile (overwrought, countrified, acoustic guitar) doesn’t capture any of the gritty urban experience of the original.

Rufus Wainwright (introspective, arpeggiated piano) never does get that YOU should be sung as YA and rhymed with the title.

Leonard Cohen (experienced, narrative, chorus) lived it. From lovemaking to love breaking, “God” can be uttered in many contexts.

And others you didn’t…

John Cale (live, plaintive, basic piano) totally sells a baffled and broken. He’s really the most credible cover. This ain’t a song for the young.

Kate Voegele (youthful, accusatory) presents a grrrl’s perspective with a harp-like guitar. Think King David with PMS.

Alexandra Burke (stylistically soulful, heavily orchestrated w/choir) said “I hated Hallelujah when I first heard it.” (Daily Mirror 12/20/2008) But musical melodrama (a la Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston) wins contests like “X-Factor” and “Idol”. And while all these cover versions have less instrumentation than Cohen’s original, singing “Hallelujah” in front of a gospel choir makes sense… but I’d rather hear that from Aretha.

In reviewing the 1968 album “The Circle Game” by Tom Rush, the Chicago Tribune pronounced that Tom Rush is: “ … probably the only man alive who should be allowed to sing Joni Mitchell songs.” In addition to single songs from Jackson Browne and James Taylor, he chose three of hers for that record. And in the world BS (before “Stairway.. “), Rush’s “Urge For Going” supplanted “Memo from Turner”and “Whipping Post” as the most requested song at early WBCN when the first hard freeze hit each year.

And whoever first imagined Nine Inch Nails coming out of the mouth of Johnny Cash has my everlasting gratitude. The video for “Hurt” is amazing, too.

You may be able to guess who is our staff pick for best versions of “Hallelujah.” As it is with every re-imagining of a song, the original is usually hard to top.

Leonard Cohen is our last nominee for the listener vote. Take a listen:

Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah

This past week, our staff has picked some of their favorite versions of “Hallelujah” … but now it’s your turn to vote!

You can check back on the past few days’ blogs for versions from Jeff Buckley, K.D. Lang, Brandi Carlile, and Rufus Wainwright and then click here to voice your opinion on which version of this song is the definitive one.

As for me? Let’s just say I’m not voting for Alexandra Burke.

Ich möchte aber keine Kritik darüber schreiben (das mache ich dann direkt zum Album) sondern lieber das schöne Video zur Single Hallelujah verlinken. That’s right, I said it: Cowellujah!

It seems like there is something new published about this “Hallelujah” scandal every day (see previous entry). You won’t believe this!

This whole Buckley/Burke debate is immensely benefiting one particular person, who may be the brains of the whole operation – Simon Cowell.

You may know Simon as a judge on American Idol, but he’s also quite the businessman. Cowell fronts Syco Music, the label who just signed Alexandra Burke.

Here’s where it gets juicy: Syco Music (essentially, Cowell) also owns the rights to Buckley’s “Hallelujah,” as well as those of Cohen’s original!

With Burke at #1, Buckley at #3 and Cohen expected to break the top 10 in upcoming sales reports, it is hard to doubt a conspiracy theory with Cowell in the middle. This may explain why “Hallelujah” is being hyped so much.

This and next week, we’re asking Mountain listeners to listen and vote for their favorite version of “Hallelujah.” Is it Cohen’s, Buckley’s, or another? Yesterday, we streamed Buckley’s cover. So today, I’m streaming K.D. Lang’s cover.

Yesterday, I played K.D. Lang’s cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” as part of one Mountain listener’s Desert Island Discs. It’s a tune that has been covered time and again; it even appeared (covered by Rufus Wainwright) in the first Shrek movie. Every new version sparks controversy and debate, and it seems more than appropriate at this time of year to blog about one of the greatest songs of all time that if you squint, could be considered a “holiday” tune. Ok, not really… but the title alone should get it some Christmas love.

And then, thanks to The Mountain’s erstwhile intern Kat, I learn that I’m not the only one thinking about all the versions of this song. Here’s the 411:

Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” – it’s back in a new way: online.

Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah” has been regarded by many as the best cover of the song, and as I’m finding out, you don’t mess with Buckley fans.

Recently, the British TV show The X Factor (American Idol for the Brits) named Alexandra Burke the fifth season winner of the show. Her first single? A cover of “Hallelujah,” which was released for web sales following the show’s finale.

As of December 15th, Burke became the current European record holder for single sales over a period of 24 hours, selling 105,000 copies of “Hallelujah” in just one day.

Buckley fans went crazy. Who is this newcomer to upheave the greatest Cohen cover ever? Buckley’s fans set up groups across the internet to encourage sales of Buckley’s cover of the song, including a group of 50,000+ fans on the popular networking site Facebook.

Right now, Buckley’s version is at #3 on the charts – but Burke’s is still at #1.

For the next week or so, I’m getting a sense of what Mountain listeners like… a 20-year-old Mariah Carey-esque’s cover? The Shrek version? Jeff Buckley’s cover? Or does someone else’s version resonate with you?

I’ll be posting full streams of some of our staff favorites, and then will pass along a link to vote for your favorite.

Start by listening to Jeff Buckley’s version.

Now that McCain/Obama is done, let the Buckley/Burke debates begin!

The Badgers Are Not Mighty Folk

Proverbs 30:26 — The badgers are not mighty folk, yet they make their houses in the rocks.

Agur, the writer of this proverb, had noted that there are creatures on this earth that are small and seemingly insignificant — but, that does not matter because they are exceedingly wise. Agur’s point is that we don’t have to be big, strong, or mighty in any way in order to be wise enough to survive the perils of this world. We just need to make use of the common sense our Lord has given us.

Wisdom is needed for staying safe. Agur could see the wisdom of the Rock Badger in making its home in the rocks.

The Rock Badger is also called a coney, or Rock Hyrax. In Israel, they live in groups of ten to a hundred and feed on grasses and other broad leaf plants. As they go out in groups to feed, they have sentries posted all around. If a predator of any sort is spotted, a warning is given and everyone quickly scurries into the cover of the rocks — as fast as their short, little legs can carry them.

That’s wisdom. They don’t have the strength to fight off the large predators, so they have to use their common sense and beat it to home — in the rocks. Rock Hyrax don’t even have the ability to run fast for long distances. Hence, they are wise enough to post sentries to give them early warnings.

We, too, are “not mighty folk” when it comes to staying safe from the dangers in this world. For that reason, we need to be wise and pay attention to the sentries God has posted around us. The sentries are the truths of God’s eternal word. They give us fair warning to flee from all sorts of temptations. God’s word describes the many evils that can overtake us and destroy us eternally. So, we know what the enemy looks like. We have learned about the dangers of flirting with these temptations.

When God’s word calls out a warning, it is up to us to do the running. When the warning is given, it is each man on his own. Which ever one is daring enough to stay behind and flirt with danger — not caring about the warning — will have to pay the consequences of becoming the enemy’s dinner.

The Rock Hyrax has the sure safety of the rocks. We have the safety of Jesus Christ, our Savior. There are many places throughout the Bible that refer to our Savior as The Rock. God did this to repeatedly assure us that we have safety in Jesus Christ. Here are a few of the references to our Rock — our Safety.

Deuteronomy 32:3-4

For I proclaim the name of the LORD;
Ascribe greatness to our God!
The Rock! His work is perfect,
For all His ways are just;
A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
Righteous and upright is He.

Psalm 18:2

The LORD is my Rock and my Fortress and my Deliverer,
My God, my Rock, in whom I take refuge;
My Shield and the Horn of my salvation, my Stronghold.

Psalm 18:31

For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a Rock, except our God?

Romans 9:33

Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a Rock of offense,
And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.

1 Corinthians 10:4

And all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

Christ certainly is very offensive to many — and He causes them to stumble in their pride, because they don’t want to depend on Him for their salvation. But, absolutely every one who believes in Jesus and goes to Him for safety will not be disappointed. We have eternal safety in Jesus. In every danger, let us quickly run to our Lord for refuge and deliverance — before we lose our eternal life.

There is great comfort and peace in the safety of our Rock — our Refuge. As we rest in His love, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, it is so good to know that You are almighty — a true stronghold to protect me from all evil every time I come to You.”

Love,

I just wanted to dedicate this entire blog post to the one who has made all of my accomplishments possible: my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I was looking around my portfolio while reviewing some older works, and I realized that I didn’t want to take another step forward in this career without taking God with me. Now, I’m just wingin’ it. About God.

I can’t imagine where I’d be if it weren’t for God. And when I say that, I actually CAN imagine, and it would suck. Royally. I can’t possibly give God enough credit for the opportunities he’s presented to me in my life. I often realize that I don’t work hard enough to even deserve some of the attention he lets me receive, and I don’t even take the time to talk about him in the areas he has blessed me. Well I just wanted to bless my blog with the presence of God. Hallelujah.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve still got my problems, I’m not perfect or carefree. But I have a sense of security, because I know God’s got my back. With the power of the Holy Ghost, I will persevere, even if it means I have to take a step down from whatever block I was on top of, or competition I was partaking in. When I’m in a pinch, all I need is some faith, and a heart full of praise and repentance. It is astounding, the blessings that follow. They’re unmistakable. You can’t pin good fortune or “karma” on that.

Again, this is a completely burden-driven entry, and I just felt the need to say something about the Great I Am. I don’t see why I can’t give him the spotlight, he always deserves it. Anyone who’s got a testimony or some words on the same plane, leave a comment! I’d love to hear about good works, or words of encouragement! God Bless.

Let Us Come

There have been special days of thanksgiving in many different nations throughout history. Our United States day of Thanksgiving has a history of various changes over the years. Back in 1789, when George Washington proclaimed a day of thanksgiving, he said, “It is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favour.”

Later, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln made another thanksgiving proclamation regarding the last Thursday of November as, ”A day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father, who dwelleth in the heavens.” These proclamations acknowledged a necessary thankfulness to God Almighty.

For the Israelites, Pentecost was their celebration of the harvest. They also had other festivals that gave thanks to God for various reasons. The point is that, in the beginning, each time they gave thanks, they gave thanks to the LORD. However, as time passed and they began to take on the customs of their heathen neighbors, they came to the point of no longer thanking the true God for anything.

As a matter of fact, they gradually got into the habit of blaming God for every trouble they had. As they blamed God for their troubles, they began to claim that only the heathen idols blessed them — as they felt they deserved to be blessed. All these messed up “feelings” that were not based on truth of any sort, finally led God to put them into years of captivity, where they learned to praise God again and repent of their waywardness.

Thanksgiving rightfully belongs to God — not a false supposed source that has not provided us any benefit and is not responsible for the blessings anyone has received. Therefore, the psalmist writes in Psalm 95:1-11,

O come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
Let us shout joyfully to the rock of our salvation;
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.
For the LORD is a great God,
And a great King above all gods,
In whose hand are the depths of the earth;
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
The sea is His, for it was He who made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.

Come, let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.
For He is our God,
And we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand.
Today, if you would hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
As in the day of Massah in the wilderness;
When your fathers tested Me.
They tried Me, though they had seen My work.
For forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who err in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
Therefore I swore in My anger,
Truly they shall not enter into My rest.

Now, that’s something to seriously think about. Let us not err in our hearts, but give thanks where thanks is due. We don’t want God to loathe us because of hearts that don’t know how to give thanks.

We have every reason in the world to joyfully thank the LORD, because He truly is the Rock of our salvation. His love is ever faithful and He is patiently waiting for us to turn to Him for all our needs and heartfelt cares.

As we joyfully rest in our LORD’s loving arms, we say, “Hallelujah! My Lord, when Your word says You are ‘a great King above all gods’, that is such an under statement. Your greatness and love cannot really be described with any human terms.”

Love,
Margaret

He Regards The Lowly

King David wrote a psalm of thanksgiving. He was very thankful that the LORD God Almighty actually cared about him and even acted to save him and lead him through this life. God personally cared about David.

David found God’s attention to all his needs a very awesome thing to think about. How can it be that the LORD of lords, who created all things, and controls all things would stoop down to take care of one little man like David on this earth, when there are so many others who are greater in all sorts of ways?

And so, David wrote in Psalm 138:6,

For though the LORD is exalted,
Yet He regards the lowly;
But the haughty He knows from afar.

God is very special in the way He sees the truth about people. He sees things people often do not see or dare to consider.

Usually, our experience in this world is that the haughty, the proud, and aggressive people are the ones who get all the attention from other people. They demand it. So, in general, people often feel that those who are very self-assertive and demanding must somehow “know” that they are “better” than others. Consequently, many will look up to the haughty and serve them in various ways — just because they “seem” to be leaders of some sort.

But, David sees that the LORD, who is truly exalted throughout all the heavens and rules over all things, actually distances Himself from the haughty. When mere creatures, created by God, try to make out like they are better than others, God is disgusted with them. God made them. He knows very well that they are actually helpless, sinful creatures, doomed to die eternally in their sins — unless they learn to humble themselves and admit their wretchedness.

So what does this say about us? What is our attitude towards other people and toward God, our Creator? Do we think we’re too good to have to bow down and confess our sins? Do we think we’re in control of our own lives and have no need to obey an old-fashioned God with old-fashioned morals?

It is God who is eternally exalted. We all will soon pass away — helpless and in great need of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

David was thankful that God had regard for him in all his lowliness. He knew he was greatly honored to have God care about his every thought. It is an honor to have God love us so much that He would even send His only begotten Son to die for our sins.

Because it is such an honor to have God love even us, let us repent of all our sins and let God teach us His ways — so that we may remain in His grace forever. It is so good to be personally cared for so tenderly.

We do need to realize who and what we are in comparison to God. Let that truth move us to give God the honor and glory that are due to His holy name. If we don’t obey God now, we certainly will wish that we had in eternity.

As we enjoy God’s tender loving care for each of us, we say, “Hallelujah! Thank You, my Lord, for patiently and faithfully stooping down to pick me up.”

Welcome back, friends!!!

Today we are going to break down the parable of the talents. At talent, as used in the parable, was a variable unit of weight and money used in ancient Greece, the Middle East, and Rome. Jesus shared the parable of the talents with His disciples. The parable is as follows:

“For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.”

“Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them another five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.”

“After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, ‘Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.’ His lord said unto him, ‘Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee a ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.’”

“He also that had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.’ His lord said unto him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.’”

“Then he which had received one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.’ His lord answered and said unto him, ‘Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’” – Matthew 25:14-30 (KJV)

So what does this parable mean? Very often you will find people willing to tell you that this parable is all about money. This is not so. While the parable uses talents (money) given to the servants, the example of the money that was given is symbolic of something far greater. Let’s break this down and see what this is all about.

First of all, the lord of the servants symbolizes our Lord, Jesus Christ. The servants are those who claim to serve the Lord, such as Jesus’ apostles at the time, as well as Christians yet to come.

Okay, so now that we know whom the players are, what exactly is the point? The “talents” of the parable symbolize the gifts that the Lord bestows upon us. This includes blessings of ability, knowledge, wealth, hope, faith, etc. Most importantly, this includes the word of God. Why did the lord of the parable commend and reward the first two servants? He rewarded them, because they had been faithful and obedient in their service to Him. Rather than being selfish or lazy, both of the first two servants actively worked to make the most of what their lord had given them. Subsequently, when their lord returned, they were able to return more back to the lord. Beloved, I’m sure you see the parallel here. Just as the lord of the parable returned after having been away for quite some time, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior will also return after having been in heaven for quite some time. When the Lord returns, all will have to give account of themselves. As the apostle Paul wrote:

“So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” – Romans 14:12 (KJV)

As we saw in the parable, the third servant did absolutely nothing productive with what his lord had given him. Instead, he just buried it in the ground. Beloved, there are unfortunately many people in this world that do the same with what the Lord has entrusted to them and blessed them with. Rather than use the gifts they have been given to do the Lord’s work, they bury their “treasure”. In so doing, they are unfaithful and disobedient to the Lord. For those that are unfaithful and disobedient to God, there will be severe consequences, including being cast into “outer darkness”. Beloved, are not called to kick back. We are called to serve. If we do not serve the Lord, then we have not really accepted Him as our Lord and Savior.

Brothers and sisters, when we face the Lord don’t we all want to see a pleased look on His face? There are no sweeter words you could imagine Him saying than, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” There’s only one way to do that, beloved. We must use what the Lord has blessed us with in order to prove ourselves as obedient and faithful servants of the Lord and good stewards of His gifts. This includes using any abilities that we have been blessed with to their utmost, and using all of our available resources to constantly spread the Lord’s love and word throughout the world. This is the Lord’s work, and we are all called to do it. While many of us will have different roles to carry out, different blessings/abilities, and different burdens, the things that unite all servants of the Lord are our faithfulness, obedience, and willingness to put serving Him above serving ourselves.

Beloved, Jesus Christ is truly Lord of all. However, each one of us has to decide what type of servant we want to be. I pray that each and every person taking part in this discussion will commit themselves to being a faithful and obedient servant that puts all that God has blessed them with to the utmost use in order to serve and glorify God and His blessed name. This includes using our tangible and intangible assets/blessings. Most importantly, it means sharing His Gospel with others. The Lord will reward us based on our faith and obedience to Him. Don’t look for those rewards in earthly treasures that will fade away with time. Rejoice in knowing that the Lord rewards with heavenly treasures:-)

Beloved, don’t be timid in sharing the word of God. Just as the Lord’s love and word saved you, sharing the same with someone else may help them to turn their lives over to Christ. The best return we can provide to our Lord Jesus Christ is to show our faithfulness and obedience as we work to bring more laborers (believers) into the harvest. That only happens by making the most of what God gives us and sharing His love and word with all people that we can reach.

If you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, but you would like to do so, please pray the following prayer:

“Lord God Almighty, I know that I am a sinner and that I am lost. I know that I need to be saved from sin, but I also know that I can’t save myself. Lord Jesus, I know that only You can save me. I know that you paid for my salvation with your own life and blood on the cross. I know that when You rose from the grave on the third day, you provided everlasting life to all who trust in You. Right now, I lay down my life and let go of my pride, my vanity and every other sin that has kept me from You. Lord Jesus, I now completely trust my life to You. I open my heart to You, Lord. Please come into my heart. Please forgive me of all of my sins, and please accept me as Your child. From this point on, I commit my life to You. Please guide me and provide me strength as I begin to live the rest of my life for You. In Your precious and matchless name I pray. Amen.”

Beloved, if you just prayed that prayer sincerely, then you are now a citizen of Christ’s eternal kingdom. You are saved, precious one!!! A new creation has been born in you, as Jesus Christ has now taken root in your heart. You will still face problems in this world, but you will never again face those problems alone. Get to know your Savior by studying His perfect word, and share His love freely with all you encounter just as He has unconditionally bless you with His powerful and perfect love. Welcome to the family:-)

If ever I can support you in prayer over any area of your life, please send me your prayer request(s) either through the “Comments” box at the end of this message, or by emailing me directly at jasonthurwanger @ dellmail.com (no spaces). It is always a blessing to join you in prayer. It is truly a wonderful and blessed thing when we come together to unleash God’s power through prayer. He is truly greater than anything this world, or the enemy, can throw at us:-) Praise God!!! Thank you, Jesus!!!
