Back in October, the nice folks at the Singapore Zoo invited Rachel and I to the Night Safari to experience their Halloween Horrors. The special Halloween program and activities are available every Friday and Saturday for the month October. You can find out more at the official website.

It’s  a yearly affair. Hence you can still check it out next year if you missed it this time round.

I bumped into my friends, Sherlyn and Yixin at the event and we embarked on the tram ride together after a sumptuous buffet spread, courtesy of the zoo.

As this was my second year visiting their Halloween program, I did not get a fright this time as I was more or less able to anticipate where the costumed ghosts will jump out. Nonetheless, the Halloween-themed tram ride which mixed the usual animal trail with an additional fright trail was still fun.

The costumed ghosts are themed around fairy tales this year. Unless last year where there was an educational message behind the fright trail, it’s scary fun all the way this time.

Don’t be hatin’, but I’m here only for a minute. This pre-Christmas bustle is not a relaxing time, oh no. Not only is there a list of people to be gifted, and consequently a list of gifts to be found, packed, shipped, sneaked and hidden, delivered and stored under that Christmas Tree, but also there are parties to attend, parties to be thrown, delicacies to be baked, Ho Ho Ho’s to be wished, cards to be sent…. Oh, brother!

That’s the closest I’ve ever been to Santa, or His helper. Only when I squeezed myself into that naughty costume did I feel the magic! It’s a photo from a Halloween Party we held a couple of years ago that I dug out for your entertainment today.

Now back to business. In the continued series of light and balanced dinner ideas for the time between all the diet-busting holidays, I propose a fillet of GRILLED SALMON OVER A BED OF SPINACH. Not only is this obviously healthy, but also it’s highly satisfying on multiple levels. It’s a surprisingly filling dinner, that fills your mouth with bliss and – to quote Mick Jagger himself – SATISFACTION!

Grab yourself a bag of baby spinach and empty it into a bowl. Drizzle with a DRESSING of your choice, por exemplo:

- 1 part of red wine vinegar

- 3 parts of walnut oil

- 1 tsp of Dijon mustard

- 1 finely chopped shallot

- 1 tbsp of honey

- big pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

Whisk it together, until the mixture is emulsified into a delicious VINAIGRETTE. Drizzle the nectar over the green, now crumble small pieces of goat cheese all over. Feel free to add dried cranberries and chopped and toasted pecans or simply diced beet (previously cooked). Mix the salad together while your fillet of salmon is grilling cheerfully on a hot grilling pan or an outdoor grill (if you’re blessed with one). Remember to season your fish evenly on both sides with kosher salt and pepper. It’s OK to sprinkle some dry herbs over the flesh, like thyme or marjoram for that extra layer of flavor.

When ready, place the salmon over the bed of spinach salad, and wait no longer for the first satisfying bite.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I must retire to the kitchen to fix a treat for the  Christmas Tea Party I’m attending this afternoon. Good Day Everybody!

Como eu andei sumido por esses dias (estou estudando pro vestibular~~) vou fazer um resumo dos acontecimentos de ALI PROJECT~

ALI PROJECT viajou para Veneza para tirar fotos para o best album da Lantis. A estada deles em Veneza durou 6 dias e 4 noites. O primeiro dia foi praticamente todo gasto andando de gôndola à procura de um lucal para as fotos serem tiradas.  Eles tiraram no terraço do hotel mesmo. Ao meio-dia Arika-sama foi a um mercado e comprou uma máscara típica de Veneza de cores vermelho e ouro. Esta máscara combinou com o vestido vermelho que foi usado para tirar as primeiras fotos.

Depois, foram a uma loja que aluga fantasias e alugaram um vestido preto e uma peruca que seriam usados nas fotos do próximo dia nas gôndolas. Voltando, eles tiveram um pequeno problema com as moradoras locais~ Elas estavam acusando-os de sacrilégio por estarem fotografando perto da estátuda da Virgem Maria! A polícia chegou ao local e viu que era nada e só anotou as identificações deles, pois são turistas.

À noite, voltaram ao mesmo mercado para tirar algumas fotos com a mesma roupa vermelha e uma peruca no formato de uma choncha. xD No local, ela também deu autógrafos para fãs de Ali Pro <3

No segundo dia ela usou também uma roupa de leopardo.

Ainda foi dito que no booklet teremos algumas fotos com o Katakura! \o\ Há tempos que não tem nenhuma foto com ele nos álbuns~

Dia 24/11 saiu mais uma edição da Gothic and Lolita Bible, o volume 35 e temos a participação da Arika-sama em uma matéria chamada “Welcome to the House of Habsburg” / “Bem-vindo à Casa de Habsburgo. A Casa de Habsburgo refere-se a uma família muito antiga austríaca que tem muita influência na história da Europa. O primeiro dos Habsburgo a ser imperador foi Rodolfo IV que comandou o Sacro Império Romano-Germânico e por aí vai na linhagem com vários imperadores, duques e reis.

Ali Project participará de mais um show em 2010! Ele se chama En5 e é organizado pela banda MUCC e será no dia 5 de fevereiro de 2010.

Como eu já havia postado sobre uma música de AliPro no jogo de Fate/Stay Night: Fate/Extra, essa música será usada no vídeo feito para promover o jogo e estará no DVD do TYPE-MOON Ace Vol. 4, que é uma revista. A edição 4 da mesma começará a ser vendida em 24 de Dezembro.

Teremos também um calendário – caríssimo – 2010 com fotos da Arika-sama: Mitsubara Labyrinth II. O calendário terá o tamanho aproximado de um cartão-postal com 13 folhas (12 para os meses e 1 para a capa, cada folha contendo uma foto). Também inclui um poema feito por ela e um autógrafo à mão da Arika-sama! O calendário terá cópias limitadas: somente 300 cópias! O preço será de 6,930 ienes, o que gira em torno dos 140 reais (sem o frete!)!!

The new Club Penguin play at The Stage is Norman Swarm is now there!

Theres a secret room in the stage and its hard to get in. Here is how to do it:

Stand on the rock shaped x near the big rock. Ask at least 4 more penguins to stand with you. One of them must be a bug, when all 5 penguins are there the rock will start moving and there will be a hole in which you go in from it.

Now you are in the secret gnome. To get the pin stand on the rock shaped x near the big treasure chest and wait till 4 more penguins stand with you.

Then the chest will start shining and it will open. Click on the diamond inside the chest to get the club penguin latest pin.

Now you have the Magic Phial Pin!

Well, our party came and went. Why can’t we have more dress up holidays? I petition we adopt Carnivale too. I had a really great time with my amazing fam and some awesome friends. Here’s the last installment of our Creepy Carnival.

We hung our dolls and bears, from nooses, from the huge tree at the center of the space. My parent’s neighbor saw it before the party and he’s now convinced that we may have some deep seeded psychological issues. You start hanging mutilated dolls and stuffed animals from trees and suddenly you’re crazy. I don’t get it. ; ) We’d wrapped the tree in colored lights first and we have spotlights, installed long ago for party purposes, so the area isn’t too dark.

No creepy carnival is complete without a strong man cutout and ours is the grotesque “Great  Fausto.” First we took an old piece of plywood and cut out a face hole with a jigsaw. We painted the board, let it dry and then sketched and filled in the figure. Here he is halfway done:

Once he had dried, my hubby sketched and cutout the “weights” for his barbell on thin wood with a jigsaw. Then we painted and attached them to the board with nails.

For the finishing touches, he painted on the border and sign. I think he came out really great.

The carnival booths were a little tricky. They were constructed using two 8 ft. beams of scrap wood wood horizontally and three 6ft. beams vertically, to form a frame. Then we attached two 3 ft “legs” to prop up the frame and attached metal spikes to the 3ft. legs to secure into the ground. I forgot to take a picture pre-decoration, but I think it’s pretty obvious from the picture anyway. The tricky part was trying to attach the wood with screws. The wood was so thick that none of our drill bits could insert the screws. So first, we had to drill a hole and then insert the screw. So we sat there on the grass, with an extension cord and two drills, switching out the plugs each time, forgetting it to do it at other times wondering why the drill wouldn’t work. We were almost done with two of them when my dad walks up to us with a power strip in hand. Yeah. Can you hear the circus music? I think I was useless for a good five minutes from laughing so hard.

Once we assembled the booths, a little creaky and uneven, but erect, we had to decorate them. Our first idea was to staple butcher paper onto the fronts and paint that. So we attached the butcher paper and it looked horrible. Luckily we has some blingy red fabric and we attached that over the butcher paper. Unfortunately, the blingy fabric was see through and it still looked pretty bad. By this point, we were a little tired so we gave up for the day. The next day, I brought along some red fabric. We attached the solid red fabric (we used small nails and duct tape for that btw) and them draped the blingy fabric across it. Success!!! For a finishing touch, we installed multi-colored rope lights around the visible parts of the frame.

We hung the prizes around the borders, set up the games behind them and we were the proud owners of carnival booths!

And here’s a last minute idea for holding the cotton candy and caramel corn. We took a long branch, creating a “tree” with a plastic pumpkin on top and then attached shorter branches using hemp rope. Clothes pins tied to rope and dangling from the “branches”  served as dispensers, I guess you could call them, for all the goodies.

The gift bags were filled with carnival tickets, to play games and for a raffle, beads, to hand out to the person with the best costume and glow-in the dark bracelets for fun. They could also be used to stash some candy to take home.

I think my biggest disappointment was the dessert bar. I’d really wanted to create risers, but didn’t have the time, so I kind of scattered everything around last minute. The crows hanging out in the background are silhouettes made from black construction paper.  The jars (moved here because someone was looking at one) were my specimens from an earlier post. The tree in the middle was store bought (on sale, hee hee) years ago. I printed out pictures of circus “freaks,” two small copies of each, spread rubber cement on the back of one copy, placed a 6″ string of black yarn on it and then  placed the other copy over it, creating a double sided ornament. The looked pretty creepy hanging from the tree.

We’d also hung streamers around the dessert bar and had over a hundred balloons hanging out all over the place, but, I forgot to take pictures…oops (I have to get better at that!)! There are a few more pics I need to yoink from friends to post and I’ll try to do that soon. Can’t wait for Halloween next year…

Halloween is the time of year when all are welcomed to dress up in costumes and trick for a treat. It is a favorite holiday for many, including John Holt, CEO of Cobalt. Every year, Cobalt employees are cordially invited to the annual Halloween Party, where everyone is encouraged to dress up and enjoy Halloween-themed food, drink and, of course, contests! This year, Cobalt set out to “do it big.”

Party Planning
“Halloween is one of the big holidays where we really go all out. It took a month-and-a-half to plan the party. This year, I had a team of people helping with food and decorations and I couldn’t have done it without them. I really enjoyed managing the décor and hand-making the chandeliers,” said Sarah Morrison, executive assistant.

Cobalt Halloween began the week before the party with cube decorations and roaming witches brooms, chasing all who entered the lobby. Also included was the annual Poster Contest where employees were enticed by prizes to design this year’s poster featuring the pirate-themed company party. Allison Maslow took the win for her outstanding design.

A Graveyard Fit for a Pirate
Finally at 3pm last Friday, costumed employees gathered in the auditorium where spooky decorations of skull chandeliers and black draperies, as well as, pizza and drinks awaited them.

“We had a candy graveyard with tombstones where people dug up candy, pirate dog tags and stress balls. Many of the departments had themed costumes. There was a lot of sport and competition. Our department did the Roaring 20s and HR did a monopoly theme,” said Jeremy Helstrom, web builder.

Holt came dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow as he does every year; however, this year the Seattle Children’s Theatre added the final touches. Luckily for Holt, the makeup artists were well-versed in pirate makeup as they had been preparing for the Theatre’s production of Peter Pan. Other costumes included vampires and devils, a treasure chest and Elliot with ET.

That’s not all. No Halloween party would be complete without friendly competition. There were several costume contests including Best Large Group, Best Small Group, Most Creative Individual and Best Cube Decoration. Best Large Group had stiff competition with Roaring 20s accepting the win and Monopoly as a close second. Best Small Group went to Iris Laband and Brian Hagins, the web analytics vampires. Kambrie Balser won Most Creative Individual Costume for her rendition of Betty Boop and Morrison won for Best Cube and her efforts in planning the party. Prizes included group Happy Hours and gift cards to various local merchants. All in all the party was a howling success.

We had a great turnout (we are semi-new to California and don’t have a ton of good friends yet but we have been slowly building our group) and everyone got into the dressing up and had great costumes. Our prize for best costume went to a couple who wore Penguin costumes that were huge and hot and totally uncomfortable looking…and therefore that sacrifice won them the prize!

We are definitely interested in having another party next year…and considered this year to be a great success!

As could be expected, Halloween is a big event in the Moyle household. And with the spooky day falling on a Saturday this year, we knew it was going to be something special.

We always start by renting out one of the local trolleys and we invite over 30 families to be a part of the Halloween extravaganza. As you can see from the pictures, everyone dresses up—some of my favorites this year—the Kolars as spaghetti and meatballs, Sue Hoagburg as octo-mom (note the eight plastic babies strapped to her body) and Sharon Disher as a biker girl—showed just how creative our group is.

Wendy and I decided to go as our unfinished house and we scrounged building materials, paint rags, blueprints, and various construction junk to decorate our bodies. Frankly, the building process is so scary, I am not sure a costume can adequately convey the overwhelming fear of the whole nightmare. But I digress.

We also had an amazing turnout from the teenagers. At first, we thought our teens would not participate and that they were too cool to still be a part of our now ninth year of trolley treating. Fortunately, we had over 20 teens be a part of the event. Leaving our home and somehow stuffing all of us into the trolley was a minor miracle. We all use our glow necklaces and everyone is required to wear one on the trolley—

• a. for safety to be seen at night and
• b. so we know where the kids in our group are as they assault houses in the neighborhood.

This year, we not only handed out the traditional candy, but we gave out our new custom candy bars complete with Halloween wishes from the Moyles. Needless to say, they were all gone by the time we returned. It is always so fun to see the younger kids all dressed up in the shindigz costumes they picked out way back in august when we first publish our offerings for the year. They are so excited about this fun and candy riddled holiday.

After trolleying about for over two hours, it’s back home for a pot luck dinner of epic proportions while the kids sort candy, play sting pong, guitar hero and basketball in the driveway. Everyone gets to enjoy our “haunted bathroom” complete with spiderwebs, skeletons and the dreaded glow in the dark toilet seat. It was all pretty funny till someone slipped off in the dark.

We had our giant hanging creature over 12 feet high in the hallway and lots of Halloween décor all about the house including the custom tombstones I did for the kids. I am not sure any of them found my copywriting punny or entertaining, but I enjoyed it at least. The party went well past midnight as we enjoyed the company of great friends and their kids. We look forward to next year already.

Born on October 23, 1983, Leonard Allan Bayot or LA as we called him came to work in Singapore back in 2006 at the fresh age of 23, after 1 year work experience in the Philippines this young stud managed to score a job in a Swiss bank where I used to work. I remember his first day, he was conscious, awfully quiet and reserved. He treated us a box of pizza because we bullied him to pay for it as initiation for newly hired first day employees. Later on, he found out he was the only one who did that.

But karma’s a bitch and so was LA because we found out that he was not quiet nor reserved after all…

We worked on the same project. Like a typical overseas worker who hadn’t had enough of working in Manila but had an opportunity of working abroad at an early age. He always whines about going home, missing his friends and family etc. As per his dialogue “Screw the opportunity! I don’t care about the 10 folds salary” I want to go home! – But guess what! LA still roams Singapore and is now on his 3rd year and counting… (And yeah…still with the same company.)

LA’s after party

We always celebrate his birthday party parallel to Halloween so this way we can dress up and go to Clark Quay to mingle or enter the bars for free because were wearing costumes. We are not used to this culture but we are getting the hang of it. Just so you know, people dress up as ghosts, witches, goblins, and other scary things for Halloween due to the belief that it will ward off harmful spirits. The purpose was to disguise oneself as a harmful spirit and thus the real spirit will leave to avoid harm.

costumes. The outside was better than inside…the bars are crowded so we just hanged at an outdoor bar where we can see people passing by. Our groups (composed of 24 people) holler at passers by wearing their costumes… most of them responded approvingly except for Edward Scissorhands…hmp! Indeed, the time you enjoy wasting is not wasted because we holler at everyone wearing their costumes until 3am.

River cruises and river taxies on the Singapore River can be accessed from Clarke Quay.

The most striking custome that caught my eye that night was the white dude wearing a ’clark kent to superman’ transistion costume. Simple yet it rocks! and ohhh.. you need to have the looks to pull this one out

In my circle of friends, I’m known as the “Martha Stewart” of the group, so as my best friend’s birthday neared, I jumped for an excuse to break out my skills. And her being a Halloween-fanatic made it just that much more fun.

Her favorite aspect of Halloween is pumpkins, so I did a theme around that.

My favorite part of Halloween is the lack of real identity that one holds on to on a daily basis. Sure it’s an opportunity for the button-down businessman to live his Brett Michaels fantasy for the day but there are more subtle identity-benders that make the night so interesting.

First, it is totally acceptable not to bother learning people’s real names; for those of us with poor passing memory, this is a life-saver. No longer do you need to worry if her name is Kristy, Christine, or Kristina. For the rest of the evening the spunky blonde can be known as Kate Gosselin.

Second, your identity for the evening is in the eye of the beholder. This year I was Ferret Boy (loosely based on an elementary-school friend. Plus an excuse to buy an awesome ferret shirt!) Apparently my rendition of Ferret Boy looks a lot like Napoleon Dynamite, Napoleon it is I guess.

My third point, (this is how this ties into a work blog) is that people’s Halloween characters tend to be a reaffirmation of their real-life character.

Landmark Events helped us to host a kick-ass party at the Pearl Hotel, about halfway through the evening we gathered those of us present for a team photo. Everyone was spot-on in their costume selection. The design girls wowed us with their creativity and superb execution. Eric made a 200 pound ex-MP look dainty with a set of DDs and a sheer white shirt. Both Jimmy and Pat slipped into costumes that looked so easy and natural they might not have been costumes (seriously Pat, the Peewee Herman get-up should not be that easy).

So… I guess this inadvertently relates to my last post. Want to know if your organization will be successful? Throw them a costume party and see who shows up- The more ridiculous the costumes the more successful the team.
