WICHITA, Kan. — Fierce winds and snow that caused fatal road accidents and shuttered highways in five states, crawled deeper into the Great Plains early Tuesday, with forecasters warning that pre-holiday travel would be difficult if not impossible across the region.

Hotels were filling up quickly along major roadways from eastern New Mexico to Kansas, and nearly 100 rescue calls came in from motorists in the Texas Panhandle as blizzard conditions forced closed part of Interstate 40, a major east-west route, Monday night.

About 10 inches of snow had fallen in western Kansas before dawn Tuesday and several more inches along with strong wind gusts were expected, National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Russell said.

“We’re talking about whiteout conditions,” he said.

Heather Haltli, 29, and her husband were traveling from their home at Hill Air Force Base in Utah to attend a family funeral in Abilene, Texas, but the storm slowed them down so badly that they had to take refuge at the Comfort Inn in Garden City, Kan.

“We’ve been traveling about 20 miles per hour all the way from Denver,” Haltli said Tuesday. She said they had passed up to 15 wrecks including rollovers, upside down cars and jackknifed trucks as they drove through Colorado.

“I don’t think we’ll be able to make the funeral, but we’ll keep going,” she said.

Colorado Highway Patrol trooper Nate Reid said the freezing rain and fog came in so fast

on Monday that it caught a lot of drivers unaware.

“I can’t even count how many rollovers we had,” Reid said.

Snowpack and icy conditions forced the closure of roadways across western and southwestern Kansas, including a western section of the I-70, the main thoroughfare that traverses the state.

“Southwest Kansas is pretty much shut down completely,” Derek Latham, a dispatcher for the Kansas Highway Patrol in Salina said early Tuesday. “I have one trooper who almost went into a ditch this morning, and he came across four other cars that went into a ditch. That was just this morning.”

The storm was blamed for at least six deaths Monday, authorities said. Four people were killed when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck in part of eastern New Mexico where blizzard-like conditions are rare, and a prison guard and inmate died when a prison van crashed along an icy roadway in eastern Colorado.

The late-autumn snowstorm lumbered into the region Monday, turning roads to ice and reducing visibility to zero. The conditions put state road crews on alert and had motorists taking refuge and early exits off major roads across the region.

In northern New Mexico, snow and ice shuttered all roads from Raton to the Texas and Oklahoma borders about 90 miles away. Hotels in Clayton, N.M., just east of where the three states touch, were nearly full. Multiple highways remained closed early Tuesday.

Linda Pape, general manager of the Clayton Super 8 motel said it was packed with unhappy skiers who had been headed to lodges in Colorado and elsewhere in New Mexico.

“They lost a day or two of skiing, and they had budgeted an amount of money they were going to spend, and now they have to spend more staying somewhere else,” she said.

Pape said it’s not uncommon for skiers to get stuck in Clayton during the winter, and she keeps two freezers and a refrigerator stocked in case roads are closed.

“They are not happy, but we are not letting them go hungry,” she said.

The storm came after much of the country had a relatively mild fall. With the exception of the October snowstorm blamed for 29 deaths on the East Coast, there’s been little rain or snow. Many of the areas hit Monday enjoyed relatively balmy 60-degree temperatures just 24 hours earlier.

Snowfall tapered off early Tuesday in the Oklahoma Panhandle, although the weather service warned of blowing snow and single digit temperatures later after dark. Up to a foot of snow fell in Boise City, Okla.

On Monday, mail carrier Vicki Roberts said she could no longer see the nearby 4,973-foot-tall Black Mesa, the highest point in Oklahoma, from the window of her home in Kenton.

“I have a mail route and I’m not going,” Roberts said. “You just don’t get out in this. We’ll be socked in here. If we lose power, we’ll just read a book in front of the fireplace.”

Travel throughout the region was difficult. New Mexico shut down a portion of Interstate 25, the major route heading northeast of Santa Fe into Colorado, and Clayton police dispatcher Cindy Blackwell said her phones were “ringing off the hook” with calls from numerous motorists stuck on rural roads.

Bill Cook, who works at the Best Western in Clayton, said he hadn’t seen such a storm since the 1970s, when cattle had to be airlifted with helicopters and the National Guard was called in to help out. His hotel was packed Monday with people “happy they have a room,” and some of the children were playing outside in the snow.

Keith Barras, the owner of the Eklund Hotel, a landmark in Clayton since the 1890s, said guests were happily milling around the lobby and he expected to be full by nightfall.

“We have lots of board games, one of our customers has a guitar, we have a piano, so there’ll be a party tonight,” Barras said.

Clausing reported from Albuquerque, N.M. Associated Press writers Terry Wallace in Dallas; Juan Carlos Llorca in El Paso, Texas; Maria Fisher in Kansas City, Mo.; and Tim Talley in Oklahoma City contributed to this report.

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas’ March primary will likely be delayed after the Supreme Court on Friday b

HOUSTON (AP) — Texas’ March primary will likely be delayed after the Supreme Court on Friday blocked the use of state legislative and congressional district maps that were drawn by federal judges.

The court issued a brief order late Friday that applies to electoral maps drawn by federal judges in San Antonio for the Texas Legislature and Congress that would have ensured minorities made up the majority in three additional Texas congressional districts. The justices said they will hear arguments on Jan. 9.

The judges issued the new maps for the 2012 election in Texas after a lawsuit was filed in San Antonio over redistricting maps drawn by the GOP-led Legislature. The maps were to remain in place until the lawsuit was resolved.

The Supreme Court’s order brings to a halt filing for legislative and congressional primary elections that began Nov. 28. The primaries had been scheduled to take place in March, but the Supreme Court’s decision means those elections almost certainly will be delayed, possibly until May.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, whose office had appealed the case to the Supreme Court, said the decision was an important step in his office’s efforts to protect the integrity of the state’s elections by ensuring they are conducted based on legally constructed redistricting maps. Abbott also noted the delays the court’s decision could cause.

“We understand the need for speed for Texas voters as well as those who wish to run for office and will work to resolve this matter as quickly as possible,” Abbott said in a statement.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said the court’s decision shows the federal judges in San Antonio “overreached and displayed judicial activism inconsistent with federal law and contrary to the intent of the Legislature.”

State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer, the leader of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus, which participated in the San Antonio lawsuit, said it was “deeply concerned” about the potential disruption of the 2012 election schedule.

“Our resolve remains stronger than ever and our commitment to minority voting rights unwavering,” he said in a statement. “If there ever was a textbook case of Voting Rights Act violations, this is it. We look forward to making our case before the United States Supreme Court.”

Lawmakers redraw districts every 10 years to reflect changes in population reported by the census, and Texas is adding four U.S. House seats based on population gains in the 2010 census. Texas’ Republican-controlled Legislature drew up new maps earlier this year, but minority groups sued in federal court in San Antonio, claiming the plan didn’t reflect the growth in the state’s Hispanic and black populations.

The San Antonio court issued new maps while it decided the case. The judges reasoned that the state would be unable to hold elections without the temporary maps.

The maps appeared to give Democrats a greater chance of winning seats in the state House and Senate than did the plans approved by those bodies and signed into law by Republican Gov. Rick Perry.

Minorities currently are the majority in 10 of Texas’ 32 congressional districts. The new court-drawn map would have raised that to 13 out of 36 districts, an outcome the judges said better reflected the growth in the state’s Hispanic population.

In the second of two separate court cases in the redistricting fight, a federal court in Washington has refused to approve the Legislature’s redistricting plan without a trial, agreeing with the Justice Department that there was sufficient evidence to question whether it hurt minority representation.

Like other states with a history of racial discrimination, Texas can’t implement new maps or other changes to voting practices without federal approval under the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The state asked a court in Washington to sign off on the maps, but those judges refused. That case is continuing.

Abbott’s office has argued the Legislature’s original map incorporates concerns about communities of interest and proper representation and departures from that map “undermines the democratic process.”

The legal issue at the high court is whether the temporary maps should have used the state-approved plans as a starting point. The case so far does not appear to raise the broader issue of whether Texas and other states should still be subject to the voting rights law.

___

Associated Press writers Mark Sherman in Washington and April Castro in Austin, Texas, contributed to this report.

After four wonderful novice performances, Reardon and I bit the dust at the Olympia Kennel Club show

After four wonderful novice performances, Reardon and I bit the dust at the Olympia Kennel Club show in Enumclaw. I just can’t seem to handle heat these days, and in 85+ degree humid heat, with a swampy brain and sweaty legs, I couldn’t handle Reardon properly in his novice class. We had 2 no-sits (which cost us 3 points each), and then some sloppiness on the off-lead heel, stemming from my inability to get myself together after that initial no-sit. A trainer I trust told me after our performance that I made handling errors that caused many of the problems. Poor Reardon!

Although this is the first problem Reardon has had with halts, it’s been a problem with my other dogs, so I’m determined to get my halt cues fixed. I have a master plan: heeling, heeling, heeling through all the commands (mostly by myself), and taping commands that I respond to as I practice. If I’m ever going to accomplish my obedience dreams, this issue has get cleared up. My dogs are too good to get a crummy handler.

I have to admit I not only came to this trial too hot and uncomfortable, but also with residual stress from a hectic summer teaching quarter and some major disappointment: my two bitches, Journey and Rozzie, who I’ve been training all summer to compete in the Labor Day Spaniel hunt tests, are both coming into season. That means they can’t run in the test, and the next tests aren’t until next spring. This also means Journey can’t compete in Open at the IWSCOPS summer specialty. Aargh!

On an uplifting note, great news came from OFA:

This is Reardon’s OFA report, giving him EXCELLENT hips! He also has normal elbows and patella. Excellent ratings are not easy to come by, so this was an exciting bit of news. Too bad Reardon had to be neutered due to an auto-immune disorder, but with his sister also earning a GOOD rating, and his brother’s OFA rating on the way, this shows good hip health across the board in this family line.

Press TV
August13, 2011

A US rail transit provider has disabled cell phone services in order to confound a demonstration over the shooting of a man by police.

On Thursday, the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system had given orders to cell phone providers to cut services to travelers on four downtown subway platforms in San Francisco, California, AFP reported.

Civil rights groups say the transit provider’s action was not legal, and that it was against the US Constitution’s First Amendment right which accords free speech to its citizens.

Demonstrators had planned a second protest for Thursday to lambast the shooting death of Charles Hill, killed on July 3 by BART police officers.

Hill was fatally shot after he attacked police with a knife.

The first demonstration, held eight days after the killing, had led to the shutdown of three San Francisco BART stations.

BART’s shutting down of telecommunications is reflective of the British government’s recent moves to find ways to stop communications among individuals wreaking havoc in the UK.

I might go down to Yellow Rock today. Sun is shining and the river looks good. I am proceeding with my obedience to clichés and not resisting as much as I thought I would. Mostly because its working. The HALTS are one technique for survival which have REALLY helped me. I seem to have been born with little sense of the ordinary needs of the human body and the years of substance abuse reduced my recognition of those needs even further. The simple HALTS message is near as clear as “What part of NO don’t you understand ?”

The HALTS.

Don’t get too HUNGRY, ANGRY, LONELY, TIRED, SERIOUS.

Once again, I can give a good analysis of the HALTS. Once again, I’m not going to. Plain obedience is the theme for a month with only a few frills now and then.

Concern that halting stocks to limit price volatility did more harm than good spurred the biggest U.

Concern that halting stocks to limit price volatility did more harm than good spurred the biggest U.S. exchanges to propose modifying the program.

They backed a plan, known as limit-up/limit down, that prevents prices from moving beyond specified bands based on a stock’s average level during the previous five minutes. On Feb. 18, advisers to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission recommended adopting the technique in lieu of immediately halting shares. The SEC announced the proposal yesterday.

Exchanges implemented single-stock circuit breakers after the 20-minute rout on May 6 erased $862 billion from the value of U.S. shares before prices rebounded. The current system halts Standard & Poor’s 500 Index and Russell 1000 Index companies and more than 300 exchange-traded funds for five minutes whenever they rise or fall at least 10 percent in five minutes. Exchanges and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority want price bands to replace this mechanism, and for the system to apply to all securities listed on their venues.

“This addresses issues that occurred related to May 6 in terms of the deviation of prices and fast price movements,” said Joseph Marinaro, chief business development and strategy officer at New York-based Surge Trading Group Inc., an electronic market maker in equities. “It provides more stability to retail investors.”

For companies already covered by the circuit breakers adopted last year, trades wouldn’t be able to occur 5 percent higher or lower than the average price over the prior five minutes, the SEC said. For all other securities, the band would be set at 10 percent. Wider collars would apply for shares trading below $1. The thresholds would be doubled during in the minutes surrounding the open and close of U.S. exchanges.

If a stock price rises or falls to the threshold and trades are “unable to occur within the price band for more than 15 seconds,” a five-minute pause will be imposed, according to the SEC statement. The halt will give investors time to respond to “fundamental price moves” driven by news about companies, the SEC said.

The proposal would affect trading on all exchanges including those run by NYSE Euronext, Nasdaq OMX Group Inc., Bats Global Markets and Direct Edge Holdings LLC, as well as private venues such as dark pools and brokerages that execute orders within their own walls.

The document filed with the SEC yesterday requests permission to test an expansion of curbs to all exchange-listed stocks and ETFs.

“The cavalry has arrived,” said George Hessler, president and chief executive officer of Stock USA Execution Services Inc., a Carmel, New York-based electronic brokerage firm that trades between 3 billion and 4 billion shares a month. “We’ve been waiting for this. This should be a good step in improving market structure in the equity marketplace.”

The initiative should eliminate problems involving “the runaway market order or mistakes with a limit order” that triggered circuit breakers in the past, Hessler said. Market orders are requests to buy or sell shares immediately regardless of the price. Limit orders are trade requests that specify the highest or lowest price the investor will accept.

The five-minute halt imposed by the current circuit breakers “has been particularly problematic in a number of situations in which a single erroneous trade triggered the pause,” the Feb. 18 report from the SEC-CFTC advisers said.

“Upgrading our trading parameters will help our markets retain the confidence of investors and companies,” SEC Chairman Mary L. Schapiro said in yesterday’s statement. “We were focused on improving the structure of our markets before weaknesses were exposed on May 6, and we will continue to be focused on market structure going forward.”

Bloomberg reports Attorneys General in 40 States Said to Join on ForeclosuresAttorneys general in about 40 states may announce a joint investigation into foreclosures at the largest banks and mortgage firms, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

State attorneys general led by Iowa’s Tom Miller are in talks that may lead to the announcement of a coordinated probe as soon as Oct. 12, said the person, who declined to be identified because a final agreement hasn’t been reached. The number of states may change because several are still deciding whether to join the investigation, the person said. New Mexico Attorney General Gary King said today in a statement that his state will join a multi-state effort.

“We are aware of or involved in a large number of investigations that lead us to believe there are in the neighborhood of 40 state attorneys general who have initiated investigations or expressed an interest,” McManemin said in a telephone interview.

Officials in at least seven states have already announced investigations into claims that employees at home lenders and loan servicers signed court documents without ensuring the information was accurate. Yesterday, Miller said in a statement that he was working with state officials, banking regulators and the U.S. Justice Department to launch a coordinated review. Attorneys general in Ohio and Connecticut have said some of the practices may amount to fraud. If by some chance you have missed this story, please see SEC Failure to Regulate MBS Resulted in “Interconnected Ponzi Scheme with Various Types of Concurrent Fraud” for a detailed recap.

Bank of America Halts Evictions Nationwide

Reuters reports BofA U.S.-wide foreclosure halt draws calls for more

U.S. lawmakers pushed for the country’s largest mortgage lenders to suspend foreclosures in all 50 states after Bank of America Corp announced on Friday it would temporarily halt evictions nationwide.

BofA, the largest U.S. mortgage servicer, is the first U.S. bank to institute a nationwide freeze on foreclosures, expanding on a 23-state suspension announced last week while it conducts a review of its procedures.

The foreclosure furor is erupting just weeks before November 2 congressional elections where voters look set to take out their anger at high unemployment and a sluggish economy on Democrats who currently control both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Oversight Committee Chairman Edolphus Towns and California Attorney General Jerry Brown, who is running for governor, called on other lenders to follow Bank of America’s lead.

Wells Fargo has said that it is “confident” in its foreclosure paperwork, and Citigroup is also resisting calls for a foreclosure moratorium.

As of Friday afternoon, other major mortgage servicers had not followed Bank of America.

At least one senior official at the Federal Reserve is concerned about the mortgage foreclosure process and its potential impact on the economy.Proper Perspective

Before this is over I would expect nearly every state to join in these lawsuits. Legal costs will be massive.

However, it is very important to remember that except in extremely rare and highly publicized cases, there is essentially no dispute that who were foreclosed on have not been paying their mortgages and are in default.

In other words, in nearly every case, these people are going to lose their homes and indeed should lose their homes. The question is not whether these people should or will lose their homes, but rather who has the legal right to foreclose.

These delays will be very expensive which should be expected when there is this much fraud.

lan Zibel, AP Real Estate Writer, On Friday October 8, 2010, 3:01 pm WASHINGTON (AP) — A mushr

lan Zibel, AP Real Estate Writer, On Friday October 8, 2010, 3:01 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — A mushrooming crisis over potential flaws in foreclosure documents is threatening to throw the real estate industry into chaos, as Bank of America on Friday became the first bank to stop taking back tens of thousands of foreclosed homes in all 50 states.

The move, along with another decision on foreclosures by PNC Financial Services Inc., adds to growing concerns that mortgage lenders have been evicting homeowners using flawed court papers, without verifying the information in them.

Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America Corp., the nation’s largest bank, said Friday it would no longer complete foreclosures in all 50 states as it reviews documents used to process foreclosures. That applies to homes that the bank takes back itself and those that it transfers to investors such as mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

A week earlier, the company had said it would only do so in the 23 states where foreclosures must be approved by a judge.

The bank did so in reaction to mounting pressure from public officials inquiring about the accuracy of foreclosure documents. A document obtained last week by the Associated Press showed a Bank of America official acknowledging in a legal proceeding that she signed thousands of foreclosure documents a month and typically didn’t read them. The official, Renee Hertzler, said in a February deposition that she signed up to 8,000 such documents a month.

A company spokesman, Dan Frahm, said the bank still believes its documents are correct but wants to satisfy officials’ concerns. “Our ongoing assessment shows the basis for our past foreclosure decisions is accurate,” he said.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who had called for such a suspension, applauded the bank “for doing the right thing by suspending actions on foreclosures while this investigation runs its course.” Also Friday, Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn, the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said he would hold a hearing on the issue next month.

“American families should not have to worry about losing their homes to sloppy bureaucratic mismanagement or fraud,” Dodd said. “Regulators at the federal, state, and local levels have a responsibility to uphold the law and protect consumers from unfair foreclosure, and lenders have a duty to not cut corners around the law.”

Banking and housing analysts, meanwhile, fear the foreclosure document problems could prolong the housing bust, and hundreds of thousands of inevitable foreclosures will be pushed off into some legal limbo for years.

“If you are looking at the key in this country to economic stability, it’s the housing industry,” said banking analyst Nancy Bush of NAB Research. “This is a huge mess that helps nothing.”

And some analysts feel that uncertainty about foreclosures could make potential buyers change their mind about purchasing foreclosed properties. That’s because of fears that the former owners will turn around and sue.

However, there could be a silver lining to the problem. A delay in foreclosures could actually prop up home prices in the short term because fewer low-priced homes would pour onto the market in the coming six months. When those properties ultimately do go up for sale, the overall economy could be in better shape, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics.

“The irony is, it may actually support the recovery,” Zandi said. “It may be that when those properties actually hit the market, the economy is in a better place,”

Also Friday, PNC Financial Services Group Inc. said it is halting most foreclosures and evictions in 23 states for a month so it can review whether documents it submitted to courts complied with state laws. An official at the Pittsburgh-based bank confirmed the decision on Friday, which was reported earlier by the New York Times. The official requested anonymity because the decision hasn’t been publicly announced.

PNC became the fourth major U.S. lender to halt some foreclosures. In addition to PNC and Bank of America, Ally Financial’s GMAC Mortgage unit and JPMorgan Chase & Co. have announced similar moves in the past two weeks.

AP Real Estate Writer Michelle Conlin contributed to this report from New York….go to original article.

Mike Adams
Natural News
Thursday, September 2, 2010

(NaturalNews) As someone with a good deal of education in scientific thinking and the scientific method, I have put considerable effort into attempting to find any real scientific evidence backing the widespread use of influenza vaccines (flu season shots). Before learning about nutrition and holistic health, I was a computer software entrepreneur, and I have a considerable scientific background in areas such as astronomy, physics, human physiology, microbiology, genetics, anthropology and human psychology. One of my most-admired thought leaders is, in fact, the late physicist Richard Feynman.

I don’t speak from a “scientific” point of view on NaturalNews very often because it’s often a dry, boring presentation style. But I do know the difference between real science and junk science, and I find examples of junk science in both the “scientific” side of things as well as the “alternative” side of things.

For example, so-called “psychic surgery,” as least in the way it has been popularized, is nothing more than clever sleight-of-hand where the surgeon palms some chicken gizzards and then pretends to pull diseased organs out of the abdominal cavity of some patient. The demonstrations I’ve seen on film are obvious quackery.

Similarly, flu season vaccines are mainstream medicine’s version of psychic surgery: It’s all just “medical sleight of hand” based on nothing more than clever distractions and the obfuscation of scientific facts. Flu season shots, you see, simply don’t work on 99 out of 100 people (and that’s being generous to the vaccine industry, as you’ll see below).

A year ago, I offered a $10,000 reward to any person who could find scientific proof that H1N1 vaccines were safe and effective (http://www.naturalnews.com/027985_H…). No one even made a claim to collect that reward because no such evidence exists.

Conventional medicine, they say, is really “Evidence-Based Medicine” (EBM). That is, everything promoted by conventional medicine is supposed to be based on “rigorous scientific scrutiny.” It’s all supposed to be statistically validated and proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that it works as advertised. And in the case of flu vaccines, they are advertised as providing some sort of absolute protection against influenza. “Don’t miss work this flu season. Get a flu shot!” The idea, of course, is that getting a flu shot offers 100% protection from the flu. If you get a shot, they say, you won’t miss work from sickness.

This implication is wildly inaccurate. In fact, it’s just flat-out false. As you’ll see below, it’s false advertising wrapped around junk science.

You see, there was never an independent, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study proving either the safety or effectiveness of the H1N1 swine flu vaccines that were heavily pushed last year (and are in fact in this year’s flu shot cocktail). No such study has ever been done. As a result, there is no rigorous scientific basis from which to sell such vaccines in the first place.

To try to excuse this, vaccine hucksters claim that it would be “unethical” to conduct a placebo-controlled study of such vaccines because they work so well that to deny the placebo group the actual vaccine would be harmful to them. Everybody benefits from the influenza vaccine, they insist, so the mere act of conducting a scientifically-controlled test is unethical.

Do you smell some quackery at work yet? This is precisely the kind of pseudoscientific gobbledygook you might hear from some mad Russian scientist who claims to have “magic water” but you can’t test the magic water because the mere presence of measurement instruments nullifies the magical properties of the water.

Having A Supply Of Healthy Foods That Last Just Makes Sense (AD)

Similarly, vaccine pushers often insist it’s unethical to test whether their vaccines really work. You just have to “take it on faith” that vaccines are universally good for everybody.

Yep, I used the word “faith.” That is essentially what the so-called scientific community is invoking here with the vaccine issue: Just BELIEVE they work, everybody! Who needs scientific evidence when we’ve got FAITH in vaccines?

Forget about evidence-based medicine. Forget about any rational cost-benefit analysis. Forget about the risk-to-benefit ratio calculations that should be part of any rational decision making about vaccines. No, the vaccine industry (and its apologist bloggers) already know that vaccines are universally good for you, therefore no such rigorous scientific assessment is even required!

The Scientific Method, in other words, doesn’t really apply to the things they already believe in. Faith can override reason in the “scientific” community, if you can believe that! What’s next, are they going to claim vaccines work because some sort of “vaccine God” makes them work?

Here, take your vaccine shot. And don’t forget to pray to the Vaccine God because that’s how these things really work. Vaccine voodoo, in other words. (Hey, that would have been a great title for the vaccine song, come to think of it…)

Unethical to find out if they work?

I got to wondering about the whole explanation of how it would be “unethical” to test whether the H1N1 vaccines actually work. This deflection strikes me as particularly odd, because it comes with an implied follow-up statement. Here’s what they’re actually saying when they invoke this excuse:

#1) It is “unethical” to conduct placebo-controlled studies on seasonal flu vaccines to find out if they actually work.

#2) But at the same time, it is entirely ethical to give these shots to hundreds of millions of people, even while lacking any real evidence that they are safe or effective.

In other words, it’s unethical to conduct any real science, but entirely ethical to just keep injecting people with a substance that might be entirely useless (or even harmful). That’s just a hint of the kind of warped logic and failed ethics that typify our modern vaccine industry.

Vaccine advocates claim that H1N1 vaccines are so effective that NOT giving vaccines to a placebo group would “put their lives at risk.” That alone is apparently enough reason to avoid conducting any real science on these vaccines.

But I’m not buying this. I think it’s just a cover story — an excuse to avoid subjecting such vaccines to rigorous scientific inquiry because, deep down inside, they know vaccines would be revealed as an elaborate medical fraud.

So I poked around to see if there were other randomized studies being conducted that might actually put people’s lives at risk. It didn’t take long to find some. For example, the New England Journal of Medicine recently published two studies regarding post heart-attack patient cooling which seeks to minimize brain damage by physically lowering the temperature of the brain of the heart attack patient until they can reach the acute care technicians at a nearby hospital.

In two studies, researchers who already knew that “cooling” would save lives nevertheless subjected 350 heart attack patient to a randomized study protocol that assigned comatose (but resuscitated) patients to either “cooling” temperatures or normal temperatures.

In one study, while half the cooled patients recovered with normal brain function, only a quarter of those exposed to normal temperatures did. In other words, patient cooling saved their brains. And yet the importance of knowing whether or not this procedure really worked was apparently enough to justify withholding the treatment from over a hundred other patients, most of whom suffered permanent brain damage as a result.

My two best friends from France arrived in Peru a week and a half ago. One is a pharmacist, the other a medical student. They wanted to take advantage of their summer holidays to visit Peru- and me.

We have just returned from a five day trip to the jungle. From Lima, we crossed the Andes during a 9 hour-bus trip to La Merced, a small town that marks the begining of the Amazon rainforest. We then got seats in a pickup truck to Puerto Bermudez, our final destination.

The pickup was supposed to leave at 5.00 am. They kept telling us “We’ll go soon, we’ll go soon!” but the truck would simply not leave half empty. Finally at 7.30am, after a lot of talking, we left La Merced for a 7-hour ride to Puerto Bermudez with 6 people sitting or standing in the back. The road was so rocky and dusty that by the end of the trip, their black hair had turned salt and pepper.

One gas stop, a Coca Cola break for our driver, numerous ponds of water being crossed, and an hour waiting for construction workers to finish burying an enormous water pipe later, we finally arrived in Puerto Bermudez, a small town located on the Pichis river.

Our guides always led the way armed with a machete, a knife the size of an arm they use to cut branches that block the way, to kill possible predators and to weed crops. “In the selva, you are nothing without a machete,” said our guide Aquiles.

Humidity in the selva is incredible. You constantly sweat profusely. It seemed so hot in there although there was no more than 23 Celsius degrees!

Taking a dip in pristine waterfalls was welcome by everyone- in the greenish waters of rio Pichis a little less. On the river banks, a few families find shelter in makeshift huts. Do they live there all year long, or only to make fishing easier when the river is low?

The area is inhabited by the Asháninka people who live on pineapple and achiote farming. Achiote is a red-vermilion pigment used for dyeing and painting, Aquiles said. It would also be a common ingredient in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and food. Our budding painter Marion said red pigments are the most expensive for they are hard to find, so I asked a villager how much he makes per kilo of achiote : 3 to 4 soles (1 to 1.50 dollars).

EDITION SPECIALE: AVENTURE A TROIS

On transpire constamment à grosses gouttes.

The four children were reported to have fainted soon after they were vaccinated and witnesses reported seeing the children’s eyes roll back as they began to have seizures. All of the children were under the age of two years of age, with the youngest being just six months. Sadly the children died before medical aid workers could reach them.

Vaccine programmes grind to a halt in India once more, when four children died after they received the measles vaccination in Lucknow. The four children were reported to have fainted soon after they were vaccinated and witnesses reported seeing the children’s eyes roll back as they began to have seizures. All of the children were under the age of two years of age, with the youngest being just six months. Sadly the children died before medical aid workers could reach them.

As news of the deaths spread, immunization drives in 41 villages have been halted until further investigations have taken place.

By Kim Yeon-hee and David Bailey

SEOUL/DETROIT (Reuters) – South Korea’s Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) has stopped U.S. sales of its 2011 Sonata sedan due to door lock issues, sending its shares down more than 4 percent on concerns it could become snared in a damaging recall crisis like Japanese rival Toyota Motor Corp (Tokyo:7203.T – News).

Hyundai notified dealers late on Monday of potential faults in the front-door latches of the new model that could affect 5,000 vehicles, and the stop-sale order was put into effect at U.S. dealers on Tuesday, a spokesman said.

But analysts drew a line between Toyota’s recall woes and Hyundai’s decision to suspend sales of the revamped Sonata, contrasting their handling of the problems.

“We were startled by news that the new Sonata, which people have pinned high hopes on, also had flaws,” said Lee Seong-jae, a Kimwoo Securities analyst in Seoul.

“But investor reaction is emotional. Hyundai has already found the defect and has started to ship replacement parts, unlike Toyota which appears to have been unclear about the causes of its defects since late last year.”

Toyota has recalled more than 8.5 million vehicles globally in recent months for problems including sticky accelerators, loose floor mats and a braking glitch across its model range.

The mass recall had prompted analysts to say consumers may shift from Toyota cars to more affordable Hyundai models.

The Japanese automaker is also investigating reports of steering problems in the Corolla, its second-most popular U.S. model.

Shares in Hyundai Motor fell as much as 4.3 percent in early Wednesday trading and were down 2.6 percent at 114,000 won by 0247 GMT, versus a 1 percent drop in the wider market (KSE:^KS11 – News).

NO RIPPLE EFFECT

About 1,300 of the 2011 Sonata sedans built from December through February 14 at Hyundai’s plant in Alabama were sold to customers. The company said it received complaints from customers but no reports of accidents or injuries related to the model.

It said dealers would inspect vehicles, and a repair, if needed, would take about an hour.

analysts say the new Sonata will be the lynchpin in Hyundai’s efforts to achieve its growth targets this year, but played down the possibility of any serious dent to U.S. sales due to the sales suspension.

Hyundai was the only major automaker to increase sales in the battered U.S. market last year.

The South Korean automaker is targeting 4.5 percent market share in the United States this year, helped by popular new product launches and aggressive marketing.

The world’s No.4 carmaker with affiliate Kia Motors Corp (000270.KS) plans to launch the new Accent and a revamped Elantra this year, which competes against the Corolla and Honda’s (Tokyo:7267.T – News) Civic.

With the new models, Hyundai aims to increase global sales in 2010 by 11 percent to 3.46 million vehicles.

Hyundai’s U.S. sales rose 8.3 percent to 435,064 units in 2009, while industrywide U.S. sales fell 21 percent. Its U.S. market share increased to 4.2 percent from 3 percent in 2008.

Toyota has announced that it will halt sales of eight models due to its ongoing problems with unintended acceleration. At issue are accelerator pedal mechanisms that could get stuck in the open position due to wear, causing the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. Earlier this month, Toyota announced a recall of 2.3 million vehicles with the possible defect.

Late last year, the Japanese automaker recalled nearly four million vehicles for floor mats that could trap accelerator pedals, also causing unintended acceleration. The two issues are apparently unrelated, though a total of 1.7 million vehicles are affected by both issues.

The following eight models are included in the sales suspension:

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

Certain 2007-2010 Camry models

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus or Scion sales have been halted, and due to the sales suspension of the above eight models, a number of manufacturing plants will be shut down for at least the week of February 1st.

PRESS RELEASE:

Toyota Temporarily Suspends Sales of Selected Vehicles

TORRANCE, Calif., January 26, 2010 – - Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it is instructing Toyota dealers to temporarily suspend sales of eight models involved in the recall for sticking accelerator pedal, announced on January 21, 2010.

“Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company,” said Group Vice President and Toyota Division General Manager Bob Carter. “This action is necessary until a remedy is finalized. We’re making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible.”

Toyota announced it would recall approximately 2.3 million vehicles to correct sticking accelerator pedals on specific Toyota Division models. Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats. There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position.

Toyota’s accelerator pedal recall and suspension of sales is confined to the following Toyota Division vehicles:

2009-2010 RAV4,
2009-2010 Corolla,
2009-2010 Matrix,
2005-2010 Avalon,
Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
2010 Highlander,
2007-2010 Tundra,
2008-2010 Sequoia

No Lexus Division or Scion vehicles are affected by these actions. Also not affected are Toyota Prius, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser and select Camry models, including all Camry hybrids, which will remain for sale.

Due to the sales suspension, Toyota is expected to stop producing vehicles on the following production lines for the week of February 1 to assess and coordinate activities. The North America vehicle production facilities affected are:

• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Canada (Corolla, Matrix, and RAV4)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana (Sequoia and Highlander)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky – Line 1 (Camry and Avalon)
• Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (Camry)
• Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas (Tundra)

No other North American Toyota vehicle production facilities are affected by the decision to stop production.

The sticking accelerator pedal recall is separate from the on-going recall of Toyota and Lexus vehicles to reduce the risk of pedal entrapment by incorrect or out of place accessory floor mats. Approximately 1.7 million Toyota Division vehicles are subject to both separate recall actions.
