kürzlich hat mich mein hirnloses robben in die imposanten räumlichkeiten des aux gazelles im 6. wiener gemeindebezirk geführt … bisher bekannt für coole clubbings, exquisites essen und eine herrliche hammam-erfahrung, werden seit diesem jahr im integrierten salon de beauté auch gesichts- und körperbehandlungen aller art (z.b. mikrodermabrasion, thalasso, oxyjet, körperwickel, körperpeelings, maniküre, pediküre, harzen, epilation, permanent make-up) und diverse massagearten angeboten …

“apm meridian massage: spezielle spannungsausgleichs-massage zwischen yin und yang, bei der das chi gestärkt wird. wirkt bei allen funktionellen störungen und schmerzen des bewegungsapparates und der organe sowie bei emotionaler dysbalance.”

das musste mein durchs ständige robben geschundener rücken austesten! – “ja, ich will!” – sprach’s und buchte eine 60-minütige apm meridian massage.

vorbei am restaurantbereich bis in den hinteren gewölbeteil gerobbt wurde ich im empfangsbereich des hammam freundlich begrüsst, mantel und schuhe durfte ich in einem kleinen separee ablegen … in kostenfrei zur verfügung gestellten, (sexy) gummisandalen geschlüpft durfte ich im warte- und relaxbereich zu orientalisch anmutenden klängen einen minztee zu mir nehmen, eine schöne art zur ruhe zu kommen und sich auf die bevorstehende massage zu freuen … mit weissem badetuch, hygienischem einweg-slip und kästchenschlüssel bestückt ging’s in den umkleideraum, nach wenigen minuten wurde ich von der therapeutin zur behandlung abgeholt … wie im gesamten hammambereich war auch der kleine massagebereich im stil von tausend und einer nacht gehalten – auch das auge entspannt mit!

erster teil der massage ist kurz erklärt: zunächst auf dem bauch liegend werden mithilfe eines goldstabes die meridiane der körperrückseite abgefahren – so soll herausgefunden ob und an welchen stellen die meridiane, also die energiebahnen im körper, unterbrochen sind und somit der freie energiefluss im körper gehemmt ist … im zuge dieser abtastung (und der körperreaktionen darauf (erwärmung, schwitzen)) folgen seitens therapeutin bereits die ersten hinweise zu erkrankungen, störungen, beschwerden im körper (erkannt? erraten? – wer weiss das schon ; )) … nach feststellung der schwachstellen des körpers beginnt schon die massagearbeit, teils klassisch, teils konzentriert auf die eruierten problemzonen … auch die extremitäten wurden gedehnt und massiert – bis hin zu einer art (mitunter schmerzhaften) fusszonenreflexmassage … auch auf dem rücken liegend wurden erneut die meridiane mittels stab abgefahren (inklusive gesicht und haarbereich) und auch hier die problemzonen massiert (z.b. inklusive bauchbereich, mmh, das tut dem darm gut!) … zu guter letzt, nach knapp 60 minuten, bedarf es etwas schonung, eingewickelt und gut zugedeckt darf der körper einige minuten ruhen und entspannen … zum abschluss stehen die duschräumlichkeiten und diverse basis-kosmetikutensilien zur verfügung, im relaxbereich wartet noch ein weiteres getränk (z.b. minztee oder zitronensaft) zur entspannung …

fazit: ein tolles rundumerlebnis, gute massage, neue erfahrung, ein paar ernährungs- und kosmetikatipps (“essen sie äpfel!”, “trinken sie mehr!”, “rauchen sie weniger!”, “trennen sie sich von ihrer aktuellen gesichtscreme!”)

And, I’ll tell you why I deem it to be so.  Last year, at this time, I had just returned from the United States (Massachusetts specifically) which was well on its way to real winter.  I expected to come back to a warm Morocco having never spent a winter there and assuming it would be warm, not hot, but sunny with a few days of rain here and there.  What I came back to was a cold house, the need for a warm robe and a winter jacket, a lot of rain and the highest humidity levels I’d ever known in cold weather.  The women were wearing heavy djellabas with thick pashminas covering their shoulders and arms.  The men wore thick navy wool djellabas over their normal clothes.  Others, wore winter weight jackets and boots.  Until I got my winter coat, I piled on the layers to go outside. 

The first week I was able to shower in the house, but it became very clear that it wasn’t a good idea so double trips to the hammam each week became a regular occurence- one for the weekly scrub down, and the second of a soap and shampoo.  The rain was incessant and it made getting laundry done impossible.  Not only did it rain nearly every other day, but the high humidity meant it took up to 4 days for the clothes to dry on the roof.  Even still, I’d often run over them with a dry iron to release the last bit of moisture in them.  We piled three winter blankets on the bed, which I rarely got out of except to eat, use the bathroom or leave the house.  After about a month, we finally bought a small space heater which didn’t do much for the overall temperature in the room, but at least we could sit in front of it to feel warmth. 

A lot of friends asked me about winter in Morocco last year, and much of my response was what I described above.  I also wrote this blog post in my personal blog, which I know is a repeat of much of what I said, but let’s reflect anyway.

Winter is here… how do I know? It’s evident in the pashminas worn as hijabs instead of the gauzy veils women normally adorn during the warmer months. Their djellebas are made of heavier fabrics and they drape warmly patterned wraps on top of that. Others are wearing boots and pea coats and even the men are wearing djellebas over their everyday wear. Now, its in the 60’s on most days, a little less when it rains, but people here are bundled up like its February in Canada. But, I have to admit, it is cold and I have proof…my little digital thermometer that is currently reading 59 with 79% humidity in the house! It’s super damp which is what really makes the air so cool. I’m sure you’ve already answered your own question…why don’t they just turn on the heat? Well, if you remember any of the conversations we had about how it is here, you’ve figured out we don’t have any. We wear lots of layers, pile on the blankets and eat lots of harira. I am most dismayed because I didn’t expect that 64 degrees could be cold, and because I’m not sure when winter is actually over around here. I hear late January, or maybe not until March. Sometimes we go out for a walk, because when the sun is shining, it’s warmer outside than in the house. A space heater might be in order soon!

That’s the weird thing about winter here.  It is often cold and damp in the house, but when the sun is shining outside its often warmer out there, and even though you need that winter jacket, you can still sit outside for a lunch or tea at one of the cafes.  But, even after a long walk to Al Manal Mall, you’re still cool to the touch on your face and hands.

So, getting to why I’m deeming yesterday the first day of winter.  Well, I woke up to the thermometer reading below 70 degrees for the third day in a row, the humidity was higher than the temp for the first time, by about 5 points (of course, it’s warmer outside).  I couldn’t fathom eating anything cold.  I made a huge pot of beans for my lunch and ate two bowls.  We bought hot chocolate which I now want every night before bed, and we had our first trip to the hammam for the second time this week for just shampoo and soap.  I also wanted to sit in the warmer room this time, which I haven’t preferred all summer.  I wear long sleeves and socks in the house at all times too.

Another sign of winter is the approaching Festival of the Sacrifice or Eid al-Adha, though signs of it’s coming have not noticeably appeared yet.  It’s a little more than two weeks away, so I’m surprised I have not seen the long knives and barbeque supplies in the markets yet.  Again, last year at this time these special supplies were sold at least a month before hand and even a few special souks were set up specifically for the holiday.  And, last night when I arrived at the hammam, one of the ticket money bag ladies I don’t usually see because she doesn’t work on Saturday started asking me about the sheep.  Now, of course I didn’t understand half of what she said, but I did understand her going “baaaaaa” (quite well I might add), slicing her neck with her thumb and making the appropriate accompanying noise (who knew it was universal), and finally motioned her arm barbecuing and saying “brochette”.  We all laughed at her way of helping me understand what she was asking as I nodded wildly that yes, indeed it was coming soon and we are getting ready (if you call planning a trip to El Jadida getting ready). 

What winter actually is varies all over Morocco due to its varied landscape.  I’m sure what I’m calling winter here in Rabat is an insult to real winters in other parts of Morocco and around the world, but there is a definite different weather pattern from November to early March here.  Most homes are built well enough to keep the cold out without heating systems, and even our family’s house in El Jadida is warmer in the winter than our flat here.  Still, we light up a brazier (a clay pot that burns coal) and sit around it to keep our feet and hands warm and create fond memories around. 

One of the nice aspects of winter around here is that it gets greener and a lot of flowers bloom making everything smell great and look lovely.  Oranges are in season, and orange blossoms perfume the air with a wonderful smell that once wafted here will always bring you back to Morocco whenever you find yourself smelling it again.

Looking for hot chocolate?  Look no further than the local hanut for Caobel Boisson Chocolate.  It’s a powdered chocolate mix that you heat up in some milk and maybe a teaspoon of sugar (if you like it sweet). The box is little, but packs quite a few servings because you need just two heaped teaspoons of powder to make a cup of hot chocolate.  It says you can make it with water, but I don’t recommend that.  The box only costs about 4.5 DH, so really what could be better than that?

Muy pocas ciudades quedan ya en el mundo tan exóticas como Estambul. Sólo basta con pasear por sus c alles, perderse por los abarrotados caminos del Gran Bazar, o con penetrar en el sobrecogedor recinto de Santa Sofía, para darse cuenta de que todo es posible en esta ciudad hermosa y caótica en la que Oriente y Occidente se  funden y en la que uno siente el peso de la historia y el mestizaje de gentes y civilizaciones. El contraste lo domina todo: desde la majestuosa Mezquita Azul hasta los mosaicos de San Salvador de Chora; desde el lujo otomano del palacio de Topkapi hasta los modernos escaparates de la Ciudad Nueva; desde el constante ajetreo del puente de Gálata hasta las silenciosas calles del barrio sefardí.

Aquí todo es magia. La ciudad está divida en dos partes, una asiática y otra europea, por el estrecho del Bósforo; y la parte europea, a su vez, en la Ciudad Antigua y la Ciudad Nueva por un corte en la tierra denominado el Cuerno de Oro. En las dos orillas se combinan viejos palacios de madera con lujosas mansiones restauradas con su propio embarcadero, los restaurantes del barrio de Besiktas, donde se puede disfrutar de un atardecer extraordinario, con paseos en barco por el estrecho disfrutando de un kebab, un humus, un cacik, o un pescado fresco.

Los hammam

Las hammam, también conocidos como baños turcos o hamam, son un rito, una continuación de los baños romanos en el mundo Otomano Turco, y fueron introducidos por primera vez en Gran Bretaña en el siglo XIX. Hamam en hebreo quiere decir “estar caliente”,  y hamma en árabe significa “calentar”, pero para disfrutar de un baño turco es  necesario la relajación en un cuarto tibio, para pasar posteriormente a otro de mayor temperatura (cuarto caliente) antes de sumergirse en una piscina fría. Después del lavado completo de cuerpo y recibir un masaje, el cuarto frío de relajación es el último paso para sentirse como nuevo. Se recomienda beber un poco de agua y un té turco para que la sensación de haber levitado sea completa.

Los Hamam tenían una gran importancia en la vida social de los otomanos. Por ejemplo, cuando las madres elegían esposa para sus hijos, la novia daba una fiesta de despedida de soltera con sus amigas en el Hamam, con comida, música y baile. Esta tradición ha ido desapareciendo, pero aún se mantiene hoy en día.

Estos baños suelen tener dos partes separadas para hombres y mujeres y su uso sigue muy interiorizado en Estambul. Algunos de los más conocidos son el Hamam de Çemberlitas, el de Cagaloglu y el de Galatasaray. El Hamam de Çemberlitas es el más interesante de todos. Está a tres minutos de la entrada de Nuriosmaniye del Gran Bazar y fue construido por el famoso arquitecto otomano, Sinan, en el año 1583. Relajarse en la piedra de vientre (la piedra circular de mármol situada en el centro del Hamam, que se mantiene caliente gracias a un horno especial) y disfrutar a la vez de la cúpula iluminada del siglo XVI no tiene precio.

Si el comercio, por el enclave geográfico de la ciudad, es una de los aspectos que más impresionan de la ciudad, ya que en cualquier plaza, camino subterráneo de peatones o calle los vendedores deambulantes montan sus puestos, el Gran Bazar es el gran padre de esa práctica. Es uno de los bazares más grandes del mundo con unas 80 calles y más de 4.000 tiendas, y tiene entre 250.000 y 400.000 visitantes cada día.

Las puertas más importantes entre las 18 que posee son la puerta de Nuruosmaniye, que encima tiene un escudo con una pistola, un libro y la bandera, y la puerta de Beyazıt, con un monograma del Sultan Abdülmecid y una inscripción: “Dios quiere al que hace negocios”. Asimismo dentro del bazar hay siete fuentes, un pozo, una mezquita y doce capillas.

El Gran Bazar fue, en la época otomano, un centro comercial pero también el núcleo financiero de la ciudad. En aquella época tenía función de bolsa y de banco. Ahora en este bazar sólo se huele tela, cuero, madera, especias…

Her training and experience as a bodyworker brings an acute sense of the anatomical layout of the body to the application of asana practice.

Knowing that each individual is unique in their own right, as their bodies are, to the journey and practice of yoga, being aware in each class, each lesson, the unique individuals needs to that journey and nurturing that through humour, patience and loving kindness.

Aisha currently holds classes at Kasbah Tamadot (Richard Branson’s Kasbah), she is excited to be joining this holistic retreat at Riad Zamzam.

The second major component to the “Journey of Awakening Retreat” is Rebecca Hutley who will be coming from Spain to mentor and unveil reiki on the retreat and use her healing hands. Rebecca has been a Reiki Master of Usui and Tibetan Reiki for over 10 years. Her life in that time has taken her around the world teaching, training and practicing. She has worked with MTV, taking a team of Reiki practitioners on European tour and has taken Reiki into the corporate arena. She says, ‘Reiki is a gift to the modern world reminding us that we can heal ourselves. It is a form which takes us beyond our current perceptions of the body and how it works and explains the indivisible links between the mind, emotions, body and Soul. Reiki is a practice which enables people to relax and explore aspects of themselves often hidden by their busy lives. It becomes a way of being by re-connecting us to our true self’.

All of this and more will create a powerful and exciting four days journey in and around Marrakech. The all inclusive activities will be optional and we have created free time and guides for you to discover the magic of the Medina itself. Vestiges de l’empire ottoman, les bains turcs revivent. Grâce aux touristes, mais aussi à l’intérêt du peuple turc pour cette tradition. Enquête du quotidien roumain Evenimentul Zilei.

Il fut un temps où les bains turcs accueillaient les complots des sultans et recevaient leurs concubines qui dansaient pour eux. Le temps d’avant l’architecture moderne, qui a changé le visage des hammams d’Istanbul. Or la fascination pour les bains turcs reste vive chez les touristes et la demande de soins de beauté des femmes ne se dément pas et relance la mode du hammam. Aujourd’hui, à Istanbul, de nombreux promoteurs immobiliers investissent des millions de dollars pour acheter et restaurer les plus élégants des bains oubliés.

“Il y a de l’avenir pour les hammams. Les gens ont réalisé qu’ils pouvaient être des affaires rentables”, déclare Aydin Bulut, gestionnaire du hammam de la mosquée Süleymaniye. Les prix sont toutefois élevés. Le bain Cagaloglu d’Istanbul, créé en 1741 en l’honneur de l’empereur d’Allemagne Guillaume II, est mis en vente pour 11 millions d’euros.

Plus modeste, le bain Ayakapi Hammam, également dessiné par Sinan, le grand architecte turc de Soliman le Magnifique, est proposé à 2 millions d’euros. Le succès touristique, et tout particulièrement auprès des femmes occidentales, des thermes historiques a convaincu les promoteurs de leur potentiel. Lesquels promoteurs savent bien qu’un massage peut coûter jusqu’à 37 euros par personne. Le calcul est vite fait.

Les hammams permettent aussi aux touristes de goûter au luxe et à l’opulence de l’Orient ancien. Avec un objectif de 63 millions de touristes en 2023 (ils étaient 26,3 millions en 2008), la Turquie a vite compris le potentiel de ces établissements. Le désir des étrangers de visiter les hammams séculaires a renouvelé l’intérêt des Turcs pour ces derniers : avec l’arrivée de l’eau chaude dans les foyers, ils s’étaient détournés de cette vieille tradition. La renaissance des bains turcs reflète également un intérêt accru de la population turque pour son héritage ottoman. “Depuis les années 1980, tout ce qui est lié à l’Empire ottoman est en vogue”, reconnaît Nina Erign, experte en études ottomanes à l’université Koç d’Istanbul.

Les bains turcs sont reconnaissables à leurs épais murs de pierre et à leurs toits sphériques. Le visiteur peut se détendre dans une salle chaude et humide, bâtie en marbre et éclairée seulement par les découpes du plafond où pénètre la lumière du dehors. Un employé du hammam recouvert d’un pagne, le “pestemal”, lui nettoiera ensuite vigoureusement le corps avec un tissu abrasif pour exfolier sa peau. “Je considère que les hammams pourraient être remis rapidement à neuf s’ils étaient entretenus correctement”, souligne Eign Iren, un entrepreneur de 33 ans. “Les touristes étrangers seront les premiers clients, mais ils seront rapidement rejoints par les Turcs.” La tradition des hammams développée par les pays musulmans joue un rôle sanitaire évident, mais remplit aussi une fonction sociale très importante. Offrant un moment de détente, l’endroit faisait parfois partie de la mosquée, comme le hammam Kiliç Ali Pasa. Les hammams constituaient alors une source de revenus pour les institutions religieuses. “C’était un lieu où les femmes échappaient aux familles. Et, si un mari n’avait pas les moyens d’envoyer sa femme au hammam au moins quatre fois par mois, c’était un motif de divorce, explique Eign Iren. Les hammams étaient aussi importants que les salons de beauté aujourd’hui.” Les jeunes mariées se réunissaient avec leurs amies dans les hammams avant le mariage. Pour les hommes, le bain était perçu comme un lieu de socialisation – réputé parfois aussi pour des habitudes plus dépravées. On dit que le sultan Selim II y mourut, en 1574 : ivre, il a glissé, se brisant le crâne sur la faïence du hammam.

Poursuite tardive de la promenade photographique sur le festival PhotoEspaña qui s’est déroulé cet été à Madrid avec l’exposition qui se déroulait à la Casa Arabe (Alcalá 62) et s’est terminée il y a peu de temps finalement, le 31 septembre. Le lieu évoque une mosquée et se trouve en face des jardins du Retiro, gratuits et magnifiques.Une bonne occasion de se souvenir du soleil en cette période où les jours raccourcissent

On voyait Mohamed Bourouissa et sa série périphéries en 6 images que j’avais en partie déjà vues, l’auteur étant désormais pas mal connu (déjà en octobre 2008, billet ici).

Nermine Hamman (site ici) montrait sa série palimpsest, des visages entre ferveur religieuse et souffrance dans un traitement graphique étonnant: une palette ocre, une texture comme du papier à gros grain, des fonds à peine esquissés et sombres au profit de visages éclairés.

Yto Barrada (site ici) exposait un extrait de sa série factory.The strait project, des formats carré en couleur de femmes travaillant dans une conserverie.

Hicham Benohoud montrait 9 portraits en noir et blanc où le visage est décoré d’objets bizarres un peu comme un bernard-lhermitte se cache et se protège en se recouvrant de petits objets.

Die seit über 1000 Jahren nach traditionellem Rezept und in herkömmlicher Weise hergestellte Aleppo-Seife besteht aus Olivenöl (Olea europaea) und Lorbeerbeerenöl (Laurus Nobilis), das aus den beerenartigen Früchten des Lorbeerbaumes gewonnen wird und einen charakteristischen, frischen Duft aufweist. Das Olivenöl reinigt und nährt die Haut zugleich. Seine ungesättigten Fettsäuren stärken ihre natürliche Schutzschicht. Daher fühlt sich die Haut auch bei häufiger Anwendung der Seife stets glatt und geschmeidig an. Je höher der Anteil des Lorbeerbeerenöls (Najel vertreibt Aleppo-Seife mit 12%, 24%, 34% und 45% Lorbeerbeerenöl), desto teurer ist die Seife in der Herstellung und desto zarter ist sie zur Haut, so dass sie gerade auch bei trockener, empfindlicher und gereizter Haut zu empfehlen ist. 

Aleppo-Seife eignet sich zum täglichen Händewaschen und zur Reinigung des ganzen Körpers, natürlich auch unter der Dusche. Man kann sie ebenfalls zum Waschen der Haare und als Rasierschaum verwenden. Die reine Olivenöl-Seife ist daneben auch zum Wäschewaschen und insbesondere zur Behandlung hartnäckiger Flecken geeignet. 

Das traditionelle Herstellungsverfahren der Aleppo-Seife

Frühe Seidensiedereien sind für das 7./8. Jahrhundert bezeugt. Damit ist die Aleppo-Seife die Vorfahrin der Savon de Marseille (Marseiller Seife) und eine der ältesten Seifen, die es gibt.

Die Seifenproduktion der Firma Najel geht inzwischen in die 16. Generation und nach wie vor wird dabei an traditioneller Handarbeit festgehalten: Zunächst werden Olivenöl, Soda und Wasser in großen Kesseln erhitzt und vermengt. Kurz vor Vollendung des Verseifungsprozesses wird Lorbeerbeerenöl hinzugegeben und die beiden Öle verwandeln sich in Sodium olivate und Sodium laurate. Nachdem die Sodalösung vollständig abgelassen wurde, wird die noch warme Seifenpaste in flachen Wannen gleichmäßig verteilt, wo sie abkühlt und erhärtet. Nach einigen Stunden erfolgt der Zuschnitt in quaderförmige Seifenstücke, die einzeln gestempelt werden. Danach werden die Seifen in kühlen Gewölbekellern auf Lücke gestapelt, wo sie mehrere Monate lagern.

Am Ende des Trocknungsprozesses sind die ursprünglich grünen Seifen an der Oberfläche ockerfarben, während sich im Inneren ihr frisches Grün erhält. Es ist umso intensiver, je höher der Lorbeerbeerenöl-Anteil der Seifen ist.

Aleppo-Seife von Najel

Die Aleppo-Seifen von Najel enthalten – entsprechend ihrer traditionellen Rezeptur – weder tierische Inhaltsstoffe, noch Farbstoffe, künstliche Duftstoffe oder Konservierungsstoffe. Sie sind dermatologisch getestet, selbstverständlich tierversuchsfrei.

Well, it was pointed out that I’ve been on a negative kick for a little while lately and that in fairness, the good things in Morocco should not be forgotten.  Keep in mind, we are living here more by circumstance than free will, and I believe that it definitely skews my view of life here.  Also, it’s one thing to visit a country, and an entirely different experience to live in it.  All that being said, here is a list of things I that balance out the bad and make Morocco an okay place to live (temporarily).

Fresh fruits and vegetables that are suspected to be organic and actually taste like fruits and vegetables.  Some of my favorites include big, juicy strawberries in season in the middle of the dreary winter, millions of mandarines which stay in season for quite a while, avocadoes that always seem to be perfectly ripe at the time of purchase, carrots are full of flavor and don’t have to be the baby version to have taste, same goes for cucumbers, abundant carmose (prickly pear cactus) eaten straight from the cart, and the sweetest grapes ever.

Every day items are relatively cheap and come in a variety of sizes to fit any budget.  You can buy a packet of shampoo for 1 DH if you don’t want to buy a whole bottle.  Last week I bought a terry cloth head wrap for my wet hair after hammam for 5 DH and today, I got a new hijab for 30 DH.  Clothes, medicine, cell phones, electricity and internet are all cheaper or reasonably comparable.  Except for a recent spike in produce, food is always cheap even if you eat out a good deal (and sometimes eating out is cheaper!)  Don’t even get me started on street food!

Along the same lines, traveling is pretty cheap to.  The trains go almost everywhere, and buses (if you can stand them) are really cheap.  Hotels are quite reasonable, and you don’t have to totally sacrifice quality or service (most of the time).  Day trips are even easier and cheaper to manage.  You’re likely to discover some really cool places if you go to cities that Morocco is not so famous for. 

I know the topic of satellite dishes is cring-worthy for some, but for an American house-wife with little housework and a lot of alone, downtime, it is a blessing to be able to see American daytime talk shows, entertainment news, Grey’s Anatomy (any season) and John & Kate plus 8, etc.  Right or wrong, cheap DVD’s of current American movies are also a plus is you’re a movie buff.

If you’re into being green, Morocco is an easy place to adapt to green living if you use the trash cans they provide on every block.  Reusing jars and bottles, taking one-bucket bucket showers every other day or so, reusing and reducing the amount of platic bags, and using public transportation are just a few ways to contribute to a cleaner planet. 

I know I recently discussed this, but seeing half the women wearing hijab is comforting.  Hearing the call to prayer right outside the window and being pretty much certain all meat is halal is a real plus if you’re a Muslim.  Even if some of the Muslims around you aren’t exactly pious, you still have a lot of resources at your fingertips if you take advantage.

The winter is cool, but not cold like New England.  I’m told last year was an exception in both lower temperatures and rain fall, so I’m hopeful (and still making du’a ) that this winter will be a little bit better.  You can still get warm by the sun during the day and even eat outside, even though you might be wearing a winter jacket.  Plus, the winter is really lush, green, and full of beautiful flowers making it more pleasant simply by sight.

This probably should have been first, but I’m going by train of thought here:  for an American wife of a Moroccan, meeting and spending a lot of time with his family is precious and special since you might not see them as often as you get to see your own family when you’re in the United States.  After living here, visits (at least ours) may be after 2-3 years, rather than 2-3 months.  Not to mention, Moroccan families welcome us with open arms and immediately fold us into the family. 

When you know Moroccans as individuals or families rather than the larger society, you can look past the many annoyances and see the kindest, warmest, most generous people.  I’ve only had the pleasure of visiting one friend’s family, but while we were there we were treated so wonderfully that I try to remember them whenever I’m complaining about my flip-flop being stepped on or getting shoulder checked on the street.  Similarly, if you meet the right people, such as a police officer from your husband’s home town, they will help you from the kindness of their heart (and likely for the sake of Allah) in any way they can.

Save for a few strays that mostly stay put and another few pets, dogs are not as prevalent here as in the United States.  I know for some people that’s not a good thing but for me it’s a very very very good thing!

The water is drinkable from the tap, at least in Rabat, which is not always a given in African countries, so I must be thankful for that.  I never thought living in another country would change me in the way I’ve seen it change other people.  But, I will never take for granted again washing machines with several cycles and a spinner that doesn’t have to be reloaded several times, clothes dryers, dishwashers, garbage disposals, regular store and office hours, Walmart (as in walking into a store and getting whatever you need pretty much when you need it), owning a car, showers and faucets that provide adjustable heat, Western toilets, libraries that loan you books for free, finding the next issue of a magazine at every single newstand, grocery store, pharmacy or bookstore, having a job, green salads, American milk, international food availablity and variety at restaurants and in grocery stores, an oven and a stove with four working burners, a normal size freezer and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. 

And finally, here is just a random list of things I love or like a lot, and will probably miss or wax nostalgic about when we return to the United States, insha’Allah.

• Horse drawn carriage rides, Cafe Toubkal and eating under the tents in Marakesh
• Photo-ops and short rides on camels
• Hammam (you knew I was going to say that!)
• Wearing pajamas in public (under my djellaba!)
• Seeing the varying landscapes and ocean view by train rides and road trips
• The ridiculous variety of olives available at dirt cheap prices
• Being able to bargain for an item you really want, but only for a little cheaper
• Sayidaty (assuming since I can barely get it on a regular basis here, I won’t be able to get it all in the United States)
• Walking into a pharmacy, presenting your symptoms and getting good drugs, cheap
• Fake designer bags of varying qualities and prices, and sometimes matching shoes and veils to go with
• Walking down the street and finding everything on sale on the sidewalk, especially when you see something you forgot you needed
• Trips to the grocery store being a special treat instead of a given and necessary part of life
• Perly, Dannette, Ghilal Cereales Yogurt
• Fanta Lemon, Schwepps Limon, and Hawaii soft drinks
• The reality that Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha will not be quite as special as with our family here
• Maxi dresses always being in style, therefore always for sale in the stores
• French fries coming with just about every meal you eat at a restaurant
• Real shawarma

*I pretty much know how to cook all the other foods I think I’ll miss.

Do I talk too much about hammam?  If the answer is yes, that’s awesome.  I heard about the hammam long before we ever even thought we’d be living in Morocco.  I wanted it to be my first destination when we thought we’d just be coming for a visit.  In the United States, we used to create our own hammam in the bathroom of our apartment by letting the hottest water steam up the bathroom and scrubbing our skin with imported kese once a week.  But, honestly, it is the one thing I really love about Morocco.  From the way I feel when I’m all scrubbed up to the kind women who take care of me every week.  In the winter, we go twice a week because it’s too cold for a bucket shower in the flat and it’s a treat to go just to feel the warmth.  Today, I almost fell asleep while the casella was passing the rough cloth over me. 

I hate poetry.  I’m not good at writing it.  However, the hammam inspired me so early on in my experience in Morocco, I felt compelled to craft a little ode.  Enjoy (and feel free to laugh at me when you get to the end)!

Oh hammam,
You are nearest to a best friend a square building could ever be.
Sun streams through your small windows in the roof.
Your endless maze of steamy rooms, each one hotter than the one before.
Flabby bellied ladies with pails line every wall, water flows in rivers to the drain.
Your steam softens the flesh of women and children, and mine.
You fill our buckets with water hot or cool, which ever we desire.
You take our sweat and dirt as it rolls off our bodies, then our soap too.
You save me a spot in the corner so I can get to know you better.
