My Review of Hancock

Hancock is the current Fourth of July weekend blockbuster. Will Smith both stars in and produced this biopic of Herbie Hancock, the legendary jazz musician who suddenly developed powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal humans.

Born in 1940, Herbie Hancock has gained renown as a leading figure in jazz. He has won multiple Grammy and Academy Awards, most notably for his 2007 tribute album “River: The Joni Letters,” which won the 2008 Grammy award for Album of the Year, only the second jazz album to win the award.

When the film opens, Will Smith’s Herbie Hancock is drunk, sleeping on a park bench outside the offices of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, his record label. He is awakened by a young kid with a synthesizer who tells him to “play some jazz fusion, Hancock.” Unfortunately, Herbie Hancock has completely lost his memory. His memories only go back a few years, to when he awoke in the hospital with a cracked skull. Totally by coincidence, this is also when his amnesia begins.

Having no memory of jazz fusion, but now possessing superpowers, Hancock tells the cute little kid to “fuck off” and flies away. Oh, did I mention that Hancock is as drunk as Mr. Know-It-All on a good day? Herbie Hancock flew blindly, almost crashing into a TWA jet whose pilot was only marginally more sober than he was.

Herbie Hancock’s idea of stopping criminals was to shove one criminals head up another criminal’s ass. Believe me, it was effective. And graphic. If only the real penal system operated that way.

Hancock had no memory of his past. He would sometimes stalk Miles Davis, sure that the musician held the key to his past, but a restraining order kept him at least one hundred feet away.

As much as Herbie Hancock fought crime and caught criminals, he caused even more collateral damage. For example, a group of masked thugs tried to rob a bank. The vault contained just over three million dollars. During the apprehension, Hancock crashed through a wall ($85,000), destroyed an armored car ($185,000), melted an entire bank of computers ($200,000), tossed the money from three ATMs to the assembled crowd ($450,000), and created nearly $6,000,000 in assorted property damage and lawsuit settlements. If he just had let the crooks steal the money, the city would have lost only half of what it did, and three girl scouts would still be alive.

Eventually Hancock realized that he missed the applause of the crowd. Though he didn’t remember his concerts, he still had a strange urge for adoration. Therefore he hired Jason Bateman as his public relations representative. Trust me, it made sense when I watched the film. Not so much right now though, I admit.

Jason Bateman has been working a lot lately. In his youth, he lost nearly every role he auditioned for to Michael J. Fox. Nowadays, with Fox otherwise occupied, Bateman has been getting every part that would have normally gone to ol’ twitchy.

Hancock and Bateman turn out to be an unbeatable team. Bateman taught Hancock to shave and stop crushing people’s pets when he landed. Hancock taught Bateman how to play “Watermelon Man” on the flute.

Many films are predicated on implausible coincidences. Coincidentally, so is this. It turns out that Jason Bateman’s wife is none other than Hancock’s superpowered wife, whom he forgot due to the amnesia. (Perhaps this is the time for a spoiler warning.) She left him years before when he fell off the stage at a concert in Pasadena (where he cracked his skull) and took all his money. He had amnesia, he didn’t even remember what money was.

Where did Herbie Hancock get his superpowers? Why did he insist on stopping crime instead of committing crime, as I would? Would he ever play electro-funk on the moog synthesizer again?It would not be fair of me to tell you. But trust me, everything works out: Hancock’s wife stays with Jason Bateman and Hancock moves to New York, where he gets a job playing bass with Paul Schaeffer on the Letterman show.

The absolute low point of this movie had to be the trailer for Starship Troopers 3. THREE? Are they kidding me?

Shannon Creek Cattle Co. Quarter Horses 2nd Production Sale

Shannon Creek Cattle Co. held their 2nd production sale Sunday, October 4, in Manhattan, Kansas. The 50 Quarter Horses listed consisted of 28 foals, 6 broodmares, 1 stallion, and 14 performance geldings and saddle mares from 3-5 years old. The horses, raised in the Flint Hills country, were the athletic, all-around Quarter Horse type that could do ranch work, perform in the arena, and just be a pleasure to ride. In addition, they offered a special attraction of 4 adorable miniature foals for sale.

SAH Peponita Kat 406, a 2004 sorrel gelding, was the high seller of the sale. Bringing $4,800, this stout gelding was a go all day, do whatever you want kind of horse with Hancock and Peponita breeding.

Out of the 54 horses, 51 were sold for a sale percentage of 94%. The average sale price was $1,295, with the top 5 sellers averaging $3,190.

So today we were randomly having a conversation about which actors we would want to save the world from invading alien zombies. Deep stuff I know. My A-Team would be as follows:

Daniel Craig:
Think about the two new Bond movies. He kills people even when he’s not supposed to. Those alien/zombies don’t stand a chance.

Gerald Butler:
300, Gamer, RocknRolla, Reign of Fire. This man is all that is man. Burly, bad ass, and a good singer to boot. Bonus points for being born in Scotland.

Will Smith:
Recommended by Taylor and Craig, I was pretty set against him at first. Fresh Prince and Hitch do nothing to boast about his apocalypse survival skills, but I think he’s finally out of his juvenile stages. Hancock, I Am Legend, and Men In Black (1 & 2) all attest to his butt-kicking skills.

Runner-ups:

Sylvester Stallone:
Freaking buffest 60 year-old I’ve ever seen. I’d take him, even at his grandpa age. You can’t beat Apollo Creed and take out an entire army of Burmese bad guys and not be considered for zombie-killer status.

Hugh Jackman:
Despite his extreme manliness exhibited in the latest X-Men, I don’t know if Hugh would be able to pull it off without his claws. As Taylor put it, “He’s a bit too much of a musical type person to save the world.”

Bruce Willis:
I don’t doubt Bruce’s world saving skills, the Die Hards and Armageddon proof they’re there. But I think they’re buried under a few too many years in the field. His age was showing in Live Free or Die Hard; he was way too slow getting up from jumping out of the police car.

Angelina Jolie:
That’s right. I listed a chick. She’ll kick your butt if you think otherwise. The Tomb Raider series, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Wanted are proof.

The latest:

Peter Berg completely dropped the project a few weeks ago — his Film 44 production company backed out, and now Paramount is scrambling to find a new director.

The search, however, has run into two issues: 1) they’re looking for a director who can put the movie together for under $175 million, which sounds manageable, but they don’t want anything resembling the crap effects of the ‘84 film, and 2) they want a director who already has a preexisting passion for the novel and is enthusiastic about the project. Right now, Paramount is shopping the script to two directors: They like Neill Blompkamp (District 9), who has the right vision, but the frontrunner, at the moment, is Neil Marshall (The Descent), who was sent the script early this month. However, despite the enthusiasm of producer, Kevin Misher (Public Enemies), the studio is somewhat tepid on Marshall, uncertain about handing over a $175 million film with franchise potential to a somewhat unknown director whose only hit was the modestly successful The Descent.

La guapísima Rashida Jones protagonizará la adaptación de la novela gráfica Frenemy Of The State. FUENTE.

Helga blei brukt til sjokoladefondue, surfing og kinamat. Vi var på en kinaresturang med utvida vertsfamilie. Masse mat, alt fra porkbun til musling.

På søndag blei eg kalt inn i stua da de såg “Hancock” og denne scena (you have to come and see this Agnes, you will like it!) :

Var School Social i dag, som betyr dårlig DJ. Er merkelig å danse når halvparten av lærerene dine står å ser på.

Det er begynt å bli sommer her no, som betyr monsoon og stormer! I dag var det 30 + og ganske humid, men rundt 6-7 tida i kveld begynte det å regne og todne som bare det!

Fikk gaver på døra i går, ein stor pakke som inneholdt klær, ein oppblåsbar krokodille og sjokolade! Takk mine kjære venner ! Og var også en liten pakke, som var en smule smelta. NORSK BRUNOST!

Eg var en lykkelig jente i går!

PS: Eg var til legen i dag, er 100% frisk så no skal eg endelig få dykke! (Tok legen 460 kroner og 90 minutter til å konstantere det).

Last week, Hubby and I took our yearly visit to La-La Land, aka the Berkshires. The foliage was near peak though the weather wasn’t what we hoped. It rained throughout the afternoon of the first day and it was mostly cloudy on the second. But one must make lemonade out of lemons and that’s what we did. We did the old couple thing of driving around looking at the scenery and we got in a three mile hike at Clarksburg State Forest.

We stayed at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, MA., a ski resort along the NY border. Our room, Room 111, was a suite with a kitchenette and separate living room. It was there that Hubby experienced the paranormal. I headed off to bed around 9 pm. Hubs wanted to stay up to experience the glorious flat screen t.v. At one point, he noticed a glowing ball of light, three feet off the floor, out of the corner of his eye. When he turned to look at it full on, it was gone. He thought he was just tired, so he forgot about it.

The next morning, we were lying in bed talking and he told me about the “ball.” I thought he was pulling my leg, so I didn’t believe him. I eventually got up, dressed, and walked into the living room. I noticed the coffee table, which was parallel to the couch last night, was moved at a 45 degree angle. When Hubby joined me, I asked if he moved the table. Hubs looked at me and said, “No.” We just looked at each other for a few seconds. Honestly, I still didn’t believe him. It wasn’t until I heard him relate the story to his folks that I took him seriously.

So, if you own a digital recorder, book Room 111 in the Country Lodge at Jiminy Peak. You might get something.

Tato itu ternyata adalah tato tanda budak dari Tenryuubito. Dan ketika tahu Luffy pernah memukul salah satu dari Tenryuubito, Boa menjadi menaruh hormat pada Luffy. Tetapi rasa hormat itu kemudian berubah menjadi penyakit yang tidak bisa disembuhkan. Tetapi ketika bertemu dengan Luffy, penyakit itu langsung sembuh. Ternyata itu adalah penyakit “jatuh cinta pada Luffy”, tetapi Luffy yang terlalu polos tidak menyadarinya. Bahkan Boa mau memenuhi permintaan Luffy untuk membantu Luffy masuk ke Impel Down untuk menolong Ace (padahal sebelumnya Boa tidak mau pergi menghadiri pertemuan Shichibukai di Marie Joa). Luffy satu-satunya orang yang tidak mempan dengan kekuatan buah Mero-Mero.

Meet our superhuman..

I really should have watched this movie earlier..When it was played on the cinema, I heard the review was so so, so I pass..But yesterday I watched it, out of boredom (and the recommendation from my boyfriend actually) and I totally loved it!

I love a story where superhero is not God, where superhero is sometimes a human being as well.. They can do mistakes as and they’re not figures which are totally out of our reach.. giving us hopes that maybe, we can all be superheroes.

I mean, where else can you find a superhero who has to attend AA and anger management class? (Except maybe in Watchmen, which is why I enjoyed it as well..)

Hancock (Will Smith) is the hero here. But this movie also has another hero: Ray (Jason Embrey). He dares to stand up for what he believes..or to be exact..maybe who he believes in: Hancock, whom everyone has lost faith in. And it’s hardly Hancock’s fault for lacking in motivation to improve himself when everyone, who hardly does nothing at all, can not stop booing him. Please..

I think those who don’t enjoy Hancock simply can not handle a switch. Don’t expect anything plain here. Our superhero can’t even get his girl here…. As she, Mary (Charlize Theron) once said: And the one thing I learned, fatedoesn’t decide everything. People get to choose.

In some scenes, Hancock is also hilarious. Especially, in that scene of Hancock learning to say “good job” and his chronic allergy with “asshole”..He’s simply lovable..

In short, I can not tell much about Hancock unless you watch it by yourself. You might then be able to decide on your own if you love it or not.

But the thing I love most about Hancock is: it gives us hope that everyone can indeed be a hero… if you and someone you care believe that you can.

Smoker vs Monkey D. Luffy ve Hancock

İlginç bir karşılaşma oldu ve sonraki bölümlerde devam edecekte. Açıkçası Smoker benim serideki en sevdiğim karakterlerden. Çok sağlam oluşturulmuş, karizmatik ve kendi yolunu izleyen, kimsenin nehirdeki akışına kapılmadan kendi yörüngesinde giden en sıkı karakterlerden.

Luffy’nin çılgınca, gözleri kararmış bir şekilde üzerine doğru geldiği Tashigi’yi son anda yolundan çekti ve dumanı içerisinde saklayarak kendisi ile bir nevi yer değiştirdi Smoker. Luffy’e indirdiği darbe ise inanılmazdı. Deniz taşından yapılmış silahı ile Luffy’nin bile adını hatırladığı, asla unutamadığı rakiplerinden birisi olarak tekrardan karşısına çıktı ve açıkçası işte benim beklediğim an… İşte benim beklediğim büyük karşılaşma…

Luffy klasik Jet Gatling’ini yaparken karşılığında Jet Gatling’e rakip olabilecek bir hamle, White Launcher buldu ve Smoker’ın hamlesini gören Luffy onunda kendisi gibi güçlendiğini itiraf etmek zorunda kaldı. Hoş, Smoker’da aynı iltifatı rakibine yaptı.

İkiside yollarını daha güçlenmek için ayırmışlardı. Başta eşit olan iki büyük rakip şimdi yine eşit güçlerle asla yenişemedikleri karşılaşmalarına devam etmek için yüzyüze geldiler işte…

Smoker deniz taşından yapılmış silahı ile rakibini etkisiz hale getirerek kımıldamasın engelledi, onu yere çiviledi ve Logue Kasabasında Luffy’nin kendi elinden kurtulmasına verdiği anlamı, onun Devrimci Lideri Dragon’un oğlu olduğu gerçeğini kelimelere döktü. Luffy ise silahın güçsüz bırakan etkisi altında kımıldayamadığını söyleyerek silahı üzerinden çekmesini istedi.

Yardım en güzel yerden geldi…

Sevdiğinin, biricik aşkının yardımına koşan Hancock artık beklendiği gibi safını değiştirmişti.

“Neden Shichibukai olarak görevini yerine getirmiyorsun Hancock?” diye soran Smoker’a sert ve öfkeli “Kes sesini! Söyleyeceğin hiçbir şey benim öfkemi engellemeye yetmez!” cevabını yapıştırdı. “Hangi cürretle benim sevgilime vurur ve onu yere yapıştırırsın?”

“Neden korsan imparatoriçesi Hasır Şapka’yı koruyor?”

İşte bu anda Korsan İmparatoriçesi Hancock’un öfkesi Haki’sini ortaya çıkarır ve Smoker’ın yeni rakibinin ne denli güçlü bir rakip olduğunu görmesine olanak tanır.

Luffy kendisini kurtaran kişinin farkına varınca “Hancock!” diye haykırır ve az önce öfkeden deliren Hancock bir anda şeker mi şeker, güzel mi güzel Hebihime’mize dönüşür.

Bu savaşın gidişatını sonraki bölümlerde görmek ve nefes nefese okumak için sabırsızlanıyorum şimdiden…

The Portage Lake Smelters-Lake Superior Smelting Company, Pt.1

Continuing our tour of the Portage Lake smelters in honor of the public open house this weekend, we move on to the oldest complex, which is actually right next door to the Quincy Smelter. The Lake Superior Smelter is still around, but you probably drive right by it without noticing! Many of it’s buildings survive today as part of the Houghton County Road Commission, which is where anyone taking the tour on Saturday should park.

The oldest of the Portage Lake smelters had one of the longest and most complex operational and business histories of any mining-related enterprise on the Keweenaw Peninsula. As small mines sprang up after the initial copper rush of the late 1840s, mining companies routinely shipped their mineral to smelters in Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and other developed urban centers for treatment. However, the limited shipping season and the high cost of transportation quickly revealed the need for a local smelter. As such, the first smelter in the Keweenaw, the Portage Lake Smelting Works, was constructed in Hancock in 1860. The smelter featured four reverberatory furnaces, and was virtually identical in design to a smelter in Detroit.[i] As the only smelter in the region, the Portage Lake Smelting Works treated copper for virtually all of the local mines. In 1865/66, for example, the smelter held contracts with the Quincy, Pewabic, Franklin, Isle Royale, Huron, Grand Portage, Hancock, Arcadian, Concord, South Pewabic, and Hecla mines.[ii]

In 1867, the Portage Lake Smelting Works merged with the Waterbury and Detroit Copper Company to form the Detroit and Lake Superior Copper Company. For the next 20 years, most mines sent their copper to Hancock to be refined, and as such the smelter complex in Hancock grew exponentially.[iii] According to Sanborn fire insurance maps drawn in 1888 and 1893, the smelter featured 13 reverberatory furnaces in three buildings, as well as a cupola building with four furnaces. The surrounding support structures included a combined machine and blacksmith shop, a cooper shop, an icehouse, at least two smaller office buildings, a sand house, and several small charcoal storage sheds. On the Portage Lake shoreline, a large lime and charcoal storage yard surrounded a mineral warehouse and dock. On land, meanwhile, the smelter was served by the narrow gauge Hancock and Calumet Railroad. Several slag storage sheds lined the H&C tracks, suggesting that slag was shipped out by rail for disposal elsewhere. The entire complex was connected throughout with small hand-powered rail lines, primarily for moving cast products to the dock warehouse and slag to the storage sheds. Despite this expansive complex, by 1900 the Hancock works were in decline. Only six reverberatories remained, with one furnace building converted into the Palace Ice Rink.[iv] Ironically, this dramatic decline was linked to business transactions which were a direct result of the smelter’s longstanding monopoly on copper smelting in the Keweenaw.

By the late 1880s several companies began investing in small-scale smelting operations of their own. In Dollar Bay, a small smelter was added to the Tamarack and Osceola Copper Manufacturing Company wire and rolling mills to handle those companies’ mineral in 1889. Tamarack and Osceola consolidated their smelting operations with the Detroit and Lake Superior Company in 1891, forming the Lake Superior Smelting Company. [v] Initially capitalized for $1.2 million, shares in the LSSC sold for $25 each, and the company was controlled by and smelted for the Tamarack, Osceola, Isle Royale, and Ahmeek mines.

Throughout the 1890s the LSSC continued operating smelters in both Hancock and Dollar Bay, but the Dollar Bay works were continually improved and enlarged. By 1903 the Hancock plant remained operational, but was used only to meet auxiliary production needs. The Hancock smelter was ultimately abandoned and dismantled by 1908.

Today the Lake Superior Smelter in Hancock is still around, but largely changed from its original appearance. You’ve probably noticed the long, low poor rock buildings with an arched roof. These were some of the original furnace buildings, which are now used to store snowplows and other equipment.

Jour férié : Canal + joue la carte des héros

C’était le 11 novembre, jour férié s’il en est, que Canal + a concocté un programme fort en action pour ses abonnés. De 15H20 à 22H30, les super héros se sont succédés pour enchanter les téléspectateurs de la chaîne payante. L’Incroyable Hulk ouvrait le bal, suivi de près par l’acariâtre Hancock (incarné par Will Smith) et du richissime Iron Man, Hellboy fermant la marche des super héros dans le deuxième opus de Guillermo del Toro.

Quelle bonne journée de télévision pour moi qui adore les super héros, leurs pouvoirs étranges et leurs différences par rapport aux “simples mortels”. Pour un fan de fantastique comme moi, le programme de Canal + était sans conteste celui à ne pas rater.

Mais la bataille a fait rage parmi les chaînes hertziennes avec Shrek sur TF1 en début d’après-midi et le mélange Grey’s Anatomy - Private Practice en soirée, Et au milieu coule une rivière avec Brad Pitt sur la deuxième chaîne, ainsi que les deux Crocodile Dundee sur M6. Et aussi sur la TNT : TMC pariait sur la jeunesse avec Taram et le chaudron magique et Tarzan 2, NRJ 12 sur la comédie avec Coluche dans son rôle de Dagobert, et le film Qui veut la peau de Roger Rabbit ?

Un jour férié, c’est l’occasion pour toutes les chaînes du PAF de sortir ses plus beaux atouts pour faire de l’audience. Malgré tout, certaines d’entre elles choisissent de ne pas perturber les habitudes du téléspectateur et diffusent les mêmes programmes qu’un jour normal. C’est le cas de W9 notamment, pourtant co-leader de la TNT avec TMC.

Alors, vivement le prochain jour férié et ses programmes toujours plus attirant. Et que vivent les super héros !
