Полдня развлекаюсь тем, что делаю деревянную рамку.

Сначала из деревянной планочки, купленной в магазине стройматериалов, надо было отпилить 4 детали, да не просто так, а по размерам и под углом 45 градусов! Потом зашкурить края, подработать косые срезы так, чтобы рамка “сошлась”. В конце концов – все склеить (не то, чтобы я молотком орудовать не умею, просто планочки тонкие!)

Следующий этап развлечений – выпиливание из ДСП основания, на котором будет нарисовано нечто, собственно, ради этого нечто рамка и делается.

Рисовать буду в следующие выходные.

А все зачем? А новый год скоро, сюрприз для кого-то будет!

There is a saying: “They don’t make things like they use to.”  I’ve said it, I’ve heard people say it, and even though some people see the statement as hyperbolic, I agree with it at least 95% of the times that I hear it.

Disclaimer: I’m a history teacher.  I love the old stuff.  I love being able to have old (i.e. “vintage”) things in my possession so I can touch, smell, and wear them.  Of course there are many many people who share this desire for things-of-old, but I’m willing to say I believe that I lust after such things with more zeal than your average person.

So why do people like me exist?  Why do we devote large amounts of time and energy to acquiring vintage merchandise?  Speaking for myself I’d say that it comes down to the standard of quality which existed in the past, but died in the name of easy access to things at a low cost goods, and the idea of “planned obsolence” which has increased the profit margins of creators of disposable merchandise over and over again.   I like having stuff that was built to a higher standard of quality, stuff that has that “build to last” feel to it.  In addition to that I think that the style of items from the past is much more appealing than many modern day things, which I believe often have much less classy  look which reflects the fact that they are cheap and replaceable.

I like the fact that I’m a person who is into vintage stuff, I’d even go so far as to say that I take pride in it.  I like the idea of tracking down vintage stuff, of hunting it down.  But I do have to admit that at times it can be frustrating.

This essay is my attempt to outline three ways a now-a-days there vintage seekers like myself can acquire high quality goods that were / are made to last.  The way that I see it there are basically three ways to about finding and buying cool vintage stuff…

1. Re-sale of vintage goods via the hunting and getting lucky.

This method involves hunting for vintage goods by going to garage sales, estate sales, some sellers on eBay or craigslist, and thrift stores.  The methods requires lots of luck, and more often than not the hunter comes home empty handed.  However, on the rare occasion that some vintage stuff  is found  the hunter only has to expend a fraction of what he or she would normally spend to acquire the merchandise.

I see this method as similar to playing slots.  The hunter spends a small amount of time and money hunting for goods.  Most the time the hunter will come up with nothing, but he or she doesn’t spent lose much cash either.  When hunters use this method they don’t really expect it to pay off, they do it for the joy of the hunt.  However, every now and the hunter gets lucky, the same way that someone playing slots does, by putting in a small amount of time and money then getting a huge pay out.

2. Re-sale of vintage goods via vintage merchants.

When a hunter is willing to spend some money this is often the method that gets used.  The hunter goes to a shop which specializes in vintage goods, finds what they need / want and spend a large sum of money to acquire it.  A good vintage shop is a very nice luxery for those who are near one, and happen to have the disposable income to spend large sums of money on vintage (used) goods.

The main thing that makes a good vintage shops such a boon to a hunter is that such shops take the time to create and cultivate good relationships with the customers willing to spend money by going the extra mile and keeping a look out for / stocking goods that a particular buyer is known to be interested in.

This method is far from 100% effective, because vintage shops don’t know when they will have a certain item in stock.  After all they are dealing in stuff that is scarce, so it is not uncommon for them have great items in stock at moments when it is finacially inconvenient for a hunter to buy said items.

(Side note: I think it is important to point out that the merchants who sell these high priced vintage goods spend lots of time using method one to track them down.)

I don’t really use this method, because I can never bring myself to pay what I consider to be a large sum of money for used clothing.  Even if it is vintage, my mortgage doesn’t care.

3. Buying goods where are made using “old school” manufacturing techniques.

A good example of a company making things today, but using “old school” techniques to do so is Billykirk, which makes some really amazing leather goods by hand.  Another example would be the Rising Son & Co which makes lots of great stuff by hand.

(Side note: both the companies I linked to above make their goods using machines and tools that were used to create the kind of goods that we call vintage today.)

This sort of stuff tends to be really amazing, and extremely expensive.

True story: I’d love to buy this stuff, but again most the time it is so far out of my price range that I can’t.

The companies that make these goods stand by their products way that the craftsmen of old use to stand by theirs.  When ever I do see this stuff I wish I had the money to buy it.  It is new, but unlike so many other new things it is made to the highest standards of quality, and I know it will last for a long time.  It has all the advantages of the vintage goods that I covet, and because it is new I know they will last.

‘Cork cuff ‘ by Donna Piacenza

Designer Donna Piacenza of Chicago based Studio 1 am ( see Eco.Icon No.15) designed this sculptural jewellery piece made enriely from recycled cork with the packaging forming an integral part of the design. The cork used comes from the wine bottling industry. Discarded corks are ground up and formed into blocks using environmentally-friendly adhesives. then each cuff is cut from a single block of cork, which can then be used to store the jewelry, or simply as a display piece of design inrelief form.

The holistic approach to her concept of including the block of cork as part of the whole piece stems from Piacenza’s regard for jewelry as a continuously interactive object. So often the packaging of a jewellery piece is disregarded and generally discarded . By contrat the Cork Cuff can be displayed in its own block makes it an iconic piece of eco design.

We rarely see cork in products that venture beyond the realm of basic utility, such as bottle stoppers, bulletin boards and flooring, however Studio 1 am’s pioneering and visionary use of cork demonstrates that this renewable, recyclable, and flexible material has multi- use potential when coupled with the visionary designs of the designers at Studio 1 am.

My work on Friday was all around spray painting. I am really pleased with the outcomes from the spray painted work, some of it is finished and others I will now be working with more.

It is definitely best to just delve in and get creating. This leads you to realise what ideas have a good outcome to them, how your idea is actually realised, to have different work to experiment with and also new work and ideas get produced from it.

Now I have finished one piece and have some more to work with.

Here is the progress of my day:

Below I will present what you can do a movie with a dose of coca-cola, or other dose of drinks, which are thrown away anyway. We found a method by which you can make something useful of this dose of coca-cola, that is a perfumed candle, with a few simple methods applied to me, and then to see your movie and yiu, came something practical with it opportunity we can participate in the recovery of waste, keeping the waters, forests, and many other places where these doses are thrown much cleaner!
If you have any ideas to make things for recycling discarded as normal, we are waiting for proposals, it is not known can be patented invention or innovation and make a lot of money …. So, as you see in videos posted on YouTube, we have a pure nature that we can enjoy all its benefits!

Well, tonight is the first of the night markets up at the town hall in Northcote! My bags are packed, I have checked and double checked and am starting to include all the things I might possibly need, mirror, sticky tape, pins… I think I better stop before I include the kitchen sink.

Alex the Lion

I was delighted to be asked recently to produce a lion cushion for a little boy called Jack who had seen the block for Bertie’s Blanket and thought the lazy lion looked like Alex from the Madagascar film.

Jack has taken delivery of his cushion, thanks to a very kind friend of ours who couriered it and safely delivered it by hand to his mummy.  He likes it and his mummy likes.  I can let my breath out now!

I love doing these cushions, pictures and blankets but can never quite believe that people like them as much as I do.  I’m delighted!

barry the buzzy bee

Whilst making Jack’s cushion, I realised that there is a little character who is starting to appear on a lot of my pictures….

The little character is a buzzy bee and I’ve decided to call him “Barry’.

We have a local bee keeper who is called Barry and he very kindly gave us a talk and tour of some of his hives during the summer while we were out on a bike ride. He now sell his honey through our local butcher and a jar is always in our kitchen cupboard.  We have orders from our friend’s kids for his honey too.  He is a busy bee keeper.

Anyway, I’d quite like to keep bees myself but until a time when I can, I like the wee bee in my pictures and I like Barry’s honey so it seems fitting to call my wee bee Barry.

I hope Barry doesn’t mind.

Cel de mai jos e pe jumatate din lut, pe jumatate din plastic. Adica un fel de struto-camila. Asa struto-camilos fiind, are o stapana draguta si desteapta,  asa cum si merita.

Al doilea inel e unul deja “traditional”, asemanator cu cele mai vechi, din lut. Are  spirale de te pierzi in ele, daca nu esti atent/a.

PS: am fost interbata de ce am fost data disparuta, azi, iar raspunsul este simplu: aseara am poposit la o “cafea” (guinness ) cu prieteni irlandezi, iar rezultatul a fost o zi de… oboseala, azi.

Am primit in dar si o frumoasa cruce – celtica – de argint de la acesti prieteni. In semn ca s-au gandit la mine cat timp am fost mmmm… avariata Stiau ei ca eu iubesc simbolurile celtice!

Mystery of Light – The Marriage at Cana

A new stained glass window on the theme of the ‘Luminous Mystery’ or ‘Mystery of Light’ has been celebrated and dedicated at St Colman’s Church, Cosham, Portsmouth, Hampshire UK.

The window is modern in design but uses traditional stained glass techniques and materials in its construction. The newly commissioned stained glass window is the work of Sunrise Stained Glass and glass artist Jude Tarrant AMGP. Jude works with hand-made antique glass and painted kiln fired pigments and silver stain to achieve subtle graduations of colours, tone and detail. Although the subject is mainly figurative the design is semi – abstract and uses a palette of blues and reds, rich in symbolism appropriate to this theme.

Design Description: The theme of the new stained glass window of the Manifestation of Jesus at Cana is one of abundance and joy; the mystery of Christ’s transformation of the water into wine, and the fidelity of marriage and the strength and unity of the family.

Mary acts as intercessor and Jesus responds with an act of compassion and a sign pointing to the future time of the message of the Last Supper and the Eucharist. He holds a cup, a plain earthenware cup of the type that would have been set upon the table at the marriage feast. He gestures at the water jars, and this is the moment of glorious transformation, of water into wine. The red of the wine flows down from the six jars and surrounds and fills the space with warmth and plenty. The words ‘You have kept the best until now’ emerge from the blue of Mary at the top of the lancet window.

The lower part of the window is the marriage scene, with an elderly married couple embracing in joy and central to the table of family members and friends who surround them – an abundance of love in the family. The circular arrangement of the wedding feast suggests completeness and unity.

The blue colour of Mary is echoed in the colour of the water flowing from above and as Mary’s blessing and protection to the gathering of the family and community at the feast below. The interweaving of both the purple/red of Christ and the blue of Mary unite the themes of the story, and link the whole window into one flowing rhythm of life and love.

At the foot of the window in glass of rich red and ambers the text celebrates the Hudson family, parishioners at the church since 1929.

‘Luminous Mystery’ stained glass – Dedication sermon by Fr Sean Tobin.

“Those who attend St Colman’s church must surely have noticed the new stained glass window. The window depicts the Marriage Feast at Cana, from the ‘Mysteries of Light’, the newer mysteries of the Rosary. In the window we see the large figure of Jesus, surrounded by the stone water jars as He transforms the water into wine. Power is poured into Him from above, and that power comes out of Him too, in order for Him to perform this great sign. Jesus is still clothed in the mantle of His mother Mary, symbolized by the blue He wears, for it was Mary who made Him aware of the needs of the people as she said to Him, ‘they have no wine’. At the bottom of the window we see the wedding feast in full flow as the young couple sit surrounded by their family and friends. Then below that is the young couple grown in years, still bonded together by the love they still share. Use the windows to aid your prayer, and know Mary still intercedes for us as we long for the wine of peace.” The transformation of the water into wine is marked by the words at the top of the window ‘You have kept the best until now’.

George Washington's masonic apron.

Most Masons can & do go through their entire masonic life completely happy with the lambskin they were given by their Lodge and the thin, cotton numbers that most Lodges keep for members and visitors to wear. These are all well and good. I always wear one of the Lodge-supplied aprons. Masonically speaking, it wasn’t always so…

In our not-so-long ago Masonic past brothers often took great personal pride in their aprons. Their apron oft showed a lot bout the man wearing it, regardless if it had been made by the local seamstress or embroidered by his wife, daughter, or even himself by the imagery thereon. Many of the surviving examples are true works of art! The most famous of which is George Washington’s masonic apron shown here on the right. I know that some say that the brethren can’t meet “on the level” if some are showing their wealth &/or success by the intricacies of their personal apron. I humbly must disagree.

As I see them it is often the home-made, home decorated, aprons that show true dedication to our order. They are often the most beautiful, too.

Fortunately, I am not entirely alone in my beliefs here. There are a few people scattered about this Nation, and the World, that still produce these wonderful aprons.

Final de semana foi quente, mas de tempo (basicamente) instável na Ilha da Magia, conhecida como Florianópolis ou Floripa. Além de hibernar, também fui para cozinha. Duas coisas que quase não gosto…. rsrsrsrs. Sábado, fizemos ostras gratinadas em casa; domingo, maridão fez uma massa com mariscos ou mexilhões, como preferir. Estava tudo ótimo! Faltava apenas um bolinho. Por dois motivos, decidi fazê-lo: primeiro, porque comprei banana durante a semana e, se não a comesse logo, estragaria; segundo, porque eu estava a fim de fazer um bolo. Uni as bananas à minha vontade de cozinhar e mais uma vez me surpreendi com o resultado. Não queria fazer um pão de ló ou bolinho de banana simples. Buscava algo diferente, um experimento. Fui para a nossa bíblia virtual e achei tal o que desejava: aqui está o meu BOLO DIFERENTE DE BANANA. Receita que encontrei no site do programa Mais Você.

Quando vi a receita, pensei, não vai dar certo. Meus amigos, estimados leitores, não só deu certo, como ficou maravilhoso. Desculpem-me a modéstia, mas fui obrigada a convidar duas amigas a provarem tal quitute. Café passado na hora e bolinho (feito por mim) com sorvete de creme…. hummmmmm… chamamos os cachorros, mas só tinha a Naza, que ficou com o melhor, limpar os pratos. rsrsrsrsrs. Querem a receita?

C – 4 ovos; margarina e bananas (1,5 quilo) são suficientes.

preparo: unte com margarina um pirex / misture os ingredientes da letra A e a metade deste coloque no pirex já untado / descasque as bananas, corte-as ao comprido e coloque sobre esta camada de trigo com açúcar / entre as bananas espalhe um pouco de margarina (pouco) / LIGUE O FORNO PARA JÁ IR AQUECENDO / coloque a outra metade de trigo e açúcar sobre a primeira camada de bananas / após, faça a segunda camada de bananas e espalhe entre elas um pouco de margarina (vai dar a liga) / misture os ingredientes da letra B e despeje sobre a segunda camada de bananas / bata os ovos com a mão mesmo (gemas e claras) e coloque sobre a camada de açúcar e canela / você vai perceber que o ovo não vai ser muito absorvido (no meu caso foi assim)… então, pegue uma faquinha, faça uns furinhos para o líquido molhar as partes internas das camadas e passe ao redor do pirex para que ele caia nas bordas / acredite, vai dar certo! / COLOQUE O PIREX NO FORNO JÁ AQUECIDO E ESQUEÇA DURANTE 40 A 50 MINUTOS EM FOGO MÉDIO (para não queimar – mas veja a potência do seu forno e regule conforme as características do seu fogão) / quando você menos esperar, vai sentir aquele aroma de canela delicioso, aí começa a acreditar que o bolo vai ficar bom. A parte do ovo vai ficar escurinha, como na foto que fiz. O bolo tem que estar sequinho após os 40 minutos. / Espere esfriar para não queimar a boca e dar dor de barriga (de comer bolo quente) e delicie-se! Se quiser, pode comer morinho com sorvete de creme ou de canela. Ou então, no dia seguinte, como ele geladinho. Hummmmm… já deu vontade de fazer outro, porque o que eu fiz acabou. Mas, agora não dá! Vou ter que inventar uma salada para compensar tantas guloseimas.

This is the latest in the tale of the study desk for Betsy and Adrian. This is the desk just before final assembly, and during sanding and filling. The end result is in sight at this point, but there may be more to come in the form of shelving and drawers, we will wait and see.  

In the mean time, I will post some shots of the desk completed and in situ. It is going into a newly refurbished apartment in the city, and should look good against the vic ash floor boards.

É uma das criações do Projeto Recria-Artisan, idealizado por Raquel Ávila Lole, de Criciúma. Integram o projeto social as costureiras da Abadeus, responsáveis pelo trabalho manual e artesanal das produções. São elas que cortam, costuram, bordam cada coração. A partir dessa iniciativa, o grupo de mulheres da cooperativa ganha uma renda extra e, o mais importante, tem o seu talento, o seu trabalho reconhecido. “Criamos peças únicas e exclusivas de forma inclusiva”, diz Raquel.

A produção original da poltrona Coração inclui três opções de cores: pink, vermelho e lilás. A versão que trago e apresento a vocês agora é exclusiva e feita a pedido pelo empresário Ricardo Rabaça, da Entreposto Casa & Ideias, de Florianópolis. Ele mesmo selecionou os retalhos nas cores preto, cinza, branco e bege e pediu a customização da poltrona. Segundo Ricardo, o obejtivo era deixar a peça mais dinâmica, podendo ser usada num home ou estar. A loja fica no shopping Casa & Design, na SC-401.
