Yet again I’ve stolen this from UCB’s Overcoming Series but I just thought it was really amazing when I read it so I just had to share it with you – also I really really want to recommend a book by John and Stasi Eldridge called “captivating” for my girl readers and the male equivalent “Wild at Heart” for all the men out there (in fact I think I have more male readers than women atm so cheers for that!) I will include a bit more about them in another post sometime once I’ve finished reading them – in fact I’ve been thinking about setting up a book review page for christian books we’ve read and been inspired by – I know the CU currently are setting up a book library to circulate books around that we’ve recommended so if anyone wants the information i can try and add it up here aswell…

Right basically I don’t think  many of us haven’t heard of the Great Houdini so I won’t go into an explanation of him but basically one of his claims was that he could be locked into any jail cell in the country and free himself within minutes. He did this in every city he visited except one. That day, something went wrong – He entered the cell as usual and as the heavy metal doors clanged shut behind him he removed from his belt his concealed piece of strong but flexible metal and set to work on the lock…but no success. Soon he had been working for 30 minutes and getting nowhere. He knew this was taking much longer than it should have and so he began to get ’stressed out’ but still he couldn’t pick this lock.

Finally, after about 2 hours of working at at and feeling like a total failure, he leaned against the door in defeat and to his utter amazement it swung open. The door had never actually been locked in the first place!

How many times have you been trying and trying to do something that’s impossible and failing simply because you’ve thrown the word ‘impossible’ in there and now just think it is? when you focus your faith on it, strike the words ‘impossible’ and ‘can’t’ out of your vocabulary, and then suddenly with God’s help, the impossible becomes perfectly ‘do-able’!

Svenska uppehållstillstånd kan köpas på svarta marknaden för 2.000 styck, avslöjar Ekot. Med ett sådant i sitt pass kan man sedan resa fritt i Europa.

Den som köper ett uppehållstillstånd på svarta marknaden måste dock på egen hand infoga det i passet.

Det kan bara göras av Migrationsverket men enligt den försäljare som Ekot talat med brukar pass och märken fogas samman av en medhjälpare i Grekland. Det är inte känt som om märkena är äkta eller förfalskningar.

Ja, oavsett om märken är äkta eller inte så stinker detta hästskit, eller apskit om man så vill, lång väg. För det här innebär att drösen av kriminella invandrare och flyktingar till Sverige kommer att öka ännu mer.

T ex är det ett brott att köpa sådana här uppehållstillstånd svart, och många utav dem som kommer hit med hjälp utav dessa är ju kriminella redan innan.

För ingen ska tro att alla de flyktingar och invandrare som kommer hit flyr ifrån någonting utan orsak, många gånger flyr de ifrån sina hemländer på grund utav att de har begått brott där.

Och vad är då bättre än att fly till ett land som tar emot vem som helst med öppna armar utan att kolla upp saker och ting ordentligt när det gäller personen ifråga?

Nej, i Sverige släpper vi alla, oavsett vilka brott som de har begått.

Dessutom är det när det kommer till kritan få utav de som kommer hit som verkligen är riktiga flyktingar.

It was late in the extra time when Barça´s experienced forward Thierry Henry controlled the ball with his hand and made an assist.It`s been a while now and everybody is talking about that hand; even making comparations to the famous “Hand of God” incident.

About the comparison between Maradona`s hand of god and Henry`s hand control: I find it quite irrelevant and believe that between the two incidents there is that much of a diference as between black and white, maybe not footbolisticly but obviously sociologically.The Hand of God happened in a political situation that almost anything was justified in order to win the second round at least.The Falkland Islands War was very present and Argentina wanted a revenge.That goal meant not only the revenge of Argentina from the British but also the revenge of exploited nations from the imperialist colonisers.

I am speaking personally; I as a person from the third world have to confess that we have a complex about football or all the sports for that matter.I am not a sociologist but i think there is no need to be one to see that; being not accepted, not acknowledged for years, winning in football against the big-fat nations is a feeling of joy and ultimate satisfaction.

At least I can talk about my own home country Turkey; since we were children, we have been told, by the media, in our schools and by our families to try to be more like the occident or Europeans which we were not and will never be.When we realized we were not what they told us to be; we felt not accepted, not wanted and outcasted, which is why we have this complex of inferiority maybe.When an economically smaller nation beats a bigger nation in football it turns it in a legend in the hearts of the third world`s peoples.

The  Hand of God of Diego Armando Maradona had a meaning.I tried to explain what it means for me at least.

I hope i would not go too far if i say the Henry incident was a simple case of lack of fairplay.

Do you have a pair of handgrips on your desk? You know what I’m talking about. That piece of sports equipment from the 70’s and 80’s that help you achieve a kung fu grip. I do. And yes, despite how ridiculous and vain it looks, I’m in no rush to get rid of them anytime soon.

Scenario: you just received an email. It’s a problem. The solution isn’t even on the horizon. You sit back in your chair and then you see them. Pick them up, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. Then another set for your right hand.

Aside from working out your grip, it is also a great stress releaser.

I can’t count the number of times, it has helped me work through a mind block.

In fact, I think it could replace smoking. Feel like reaching for a cig? Reach for the ‘grip. 2 sets of 10 reps, one for each hand, and that Marlboro won’t seem so alluring.

Now, before you get all worked up over the word “craft”, let me reiterate what I said in this post.  Crafts are not inherently evil.  They’ve just gotten a bad rap because too many people have misused and abused them as a substitution for creative art experiences.  Open-ended creative art activities should be the mainstay of a preschooler’s experiences, but occasional craft projects can be beneficial as well.  There are simply a few things to consider before choosing a craft project for your children. 

1) Is it developmentally appropriate?  Meaning, you need to consider their developmental levels, their motor skills, interests, and attention spans, and decide if the project matches those needs.  Think through the craft project and consider how much of the project the children can do on their own without undue frustration.  If you have to do all the work, it really isn’t their project! 

2) Do you have the appropriate setting?  With young children, large group craft projects can be chaotic and frustrating.  Consider utilizing crafts in small groups or in one-on-one situations so that children can get adequate help and work at their own pace. 

3)  Can you let go?  You have to be ready for children who want to do things a little bit differently.  And I would almost always say, that’s great!  That shows divergent thinking.  If a young child doesn’t want to make a turkey but sees the perfect supplies for making a butterfly, are you going to be OK with that?  Too often, we (as adults) get so wrapped up in the end-product of a craft, that we forget that the whole purpose of the activity is to benefit the children producing them, not to create high-end collectibles. 

So, with that lengthy disclaimer, here are a couple of Thanksgiving craft ideas that may suit your little ones and give them a fun activity to work on about the time the family feast turns into a football-fest!

The Paper Plate Turkey

Here’s the quick and dirty-

Provide these materials:

Paper plates, cut in halves

Brown, egg-shaped heads (eyes drawn on or have the children do it)

Yellow, triangle beaks

Yellow feet (cut notches in the same triangle shapes cut for the beaks)

Strips of colored paper, folded accordion style (or have children do the folding)

Feathers

Glue

Assist the children as they glue the parts together to form a turkey!  The above turkey picture is pretty much what I had in mind, but the children may want to do things differently.  Maybe the strips of paper should be the feathers, or they may want to color the plates.  Maybe they don’t want a turkey at all.  Here are some samples that emerged as I did this project with some children recently:

Thinking outside the box.

A project like this enhances small motor skills, some color and shape recognition, and a bit of creativity.  You’ll notice that in the last sample, even though the outcome may not have been the “perfect turkey”, the same fine motor skills were used and shapes and colors could still be discussed.  In fact, if you want to talk about creative development, which sample best shows that?

Handprint Turkeys

I love doing projects using the child’s handprints!  They become keepsakes as they preserve those tiny hands for our memories!  Here’s a new spin on the classic hand turkey.

You need:

Adhesive foam (brown, black, red, green, orange, yellow)

“Googley eyes”

Glue

Sharpie Marker

Non-adhesive foam sheets, or felt sheets cut in half (for background)

Trace the children’s handprints onto the brown self adhesive foam.  I can usually get two hands per sheet.  Depending upon the skill level of the children, cut out the hands, or have the children cut them out.  (If you have a larger group, do this ahead of time so that they can all be traced and cut out before the project.) 

The next parts can be cut out ahead of time so that the children can simply apply them.  You can “eyeball it” or use the patterns I’ve attached here.  Cut a hat from black, and a hat band from red (or other color) and attach the band ahead of time for younger children.  Cut a beak from yellow and a waddle from red  and attach the waddle to beak ahead of time for younger children as well.  Cut feathers from an assortment of colors.  Have enough for at least three per child.  Prepare the backgrounds by writing, “I am thankful for…” at the top and the child’s name and date on the back.

Help the children peel and stick the hand print onto the background, glue on the eye, attach the beak and hat, and add colored feathers between the fingers.  Voila!  A turkey!  Now, read the top out loud and ask the children what they’re thankful for.  Write their thankful thoughts on the feathers.  This portion is a whole language activity.  Turn their spoken words into written words right in front of them.  Talk about some of the letters and sounds as you do.  Intentionally think out loud to model the writing process.

One example on red foam.  This group discussion focused primarily on people they were thankful for.

This example is on felt.  You’ll notice this child is thankful for Christmas and Transformers.  It always makes me laugh that preschoolers and retailers are more than happy to skip right over Thanksgiving and head straight for Christmas!

Remember that there is no law stating you must have a Thanksgiving craft.  Pull out stacks of paper, scissors, and crayons and just let kids create!  If, however, your children love crafts and you are both up to the challenge, maybe one of these two can fit the bill!
