For those of you who keep up with my blog on a regular basis will know that I freakin love handbags.  During a Twitter search of fashion bloggers I came across www.thelooksforless.com (check her out, she is an excellent blogger) and she had made reference to a competition, I was so sad and disappointed when I read “U.S Residents Only” – meaning I cant apply.

The great thing is all bags are priced between $15 and $75, SO CHEAP! I havent looked into it but Id imagine Australian Postage would be an expensive affair.

QVC’s new designer, Isaac Mizrahi, has his first QVC Today’s Special Value Monday, a pebble leather purse with accessories.

But if you have been reading our blog, you would have known about this TSV back on Nov. 14, when we wrote about it.

We can’t take all the credit, however. A QVC forum sleuth unearthed the intelligence.

As we are seeing, Mizrahi loves bright colors in his purses. We especially love the “cactus,” because it reminds us of Arizona, which we love.

We were in Tiffany & Co. at the Short Hills Mall in Jersey Sunday, just browsing. We spotted a customer carrying a handbag that looked very much like the satchel Iman, David Bowie’s wife, does for HSN.

The Tiffany’s saleswoman complimented the patron on her purse. The customer didn’t anything. We saw the purse’s logo, and it, again, suspiciously looked like the logo for Iman’s Global Chic HSN collection.

Fess up, lady! Admit it was from HSN.

Wow what a great weekend.  Michelle and I were at Plowshares this weekend and although we didn’t sell to many bags, Meg sold several of her animals.  We have decided that we need to make some mittens for next year.  And I am going to have to make more animals for sure!! 

We met some really terrific people, some neighbors to our booth, old faces from last year, and some new faces and crafters as well.   There is a reason this show has been going on for so long.  You can really feel the love.

Designer handbags, designer purses, and wallets command some very steep prices and that in turn creates a whole separate business environment of faux designer handbags and designer purses. Faux or real is now hard to tell the difference which is which.

Unless money is no object, designer handbags and designer purses can be easily substituted with the knock off brands. I see no difference in going faux than do clothes knock offs from the fashion designers. The prices for the real are so inflated and over priced; it only lends itself to its own competition. I realize this will draw a strong opposition from the fashion world, but if you think about their overpricing of their handbags and designer purses, they are directly responsible for their own dilemma.

There is nothing wrong with pricing your products for their uniqueness but if you over price, you incite a secondary market that can easily duplicate the original product at a much lower price because the cost factor to do so is too easy to accomplish. I understand copyright and patent laws, but there is a level of unreasonable that is a factor that cannot be ignored from a common sense position.

Designer handbags and designer purses or wallets will always be an important part of women’s fashion, that’s a given, but to try and stop the secondary market of faux designer handbags and designer purses is a futile endeavor. It’s a market whereby one drives the other and the need for supply and demand is driven by the cost and desire.

Personally, I have a tendency to notice the color matching value of handbags or purses more so, than actually the real or faux value of what I see. If the handbag or purse compliments the ensemble, then that is the winning combination that the person wearing the grouping has achieved for me.

Faux or real when handbags or purses is discussed, will always draw deep divides in the sand, but that in itself is, by design, pun intended.

I love bags, i think most women do! My bag of late has been a simple leather across the shoulder bag, home to my mobile phone, keys, some loose change and a  few notes, visa card, a pen, tissues, a generous layer of cookie crumbs and a bunch of receipts which have seen better days. I use this bag because it’s convenient, when my mobile rings I am not hunting through my tote bag while keeping an eye on the children and the same goes for when i need to pay for something or write something down in a hurry. Wipes, nappies, spare change of clothes, drinks/snacks are usually kept in the basket of the stroller, a lot less burdensome than the massive ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ bag.

Without checking the actual contents of your bag could you in all honesty empty the contents out, snap a pic and write about them. And what does your bag say about you?!

I saw this bag in the Fred Perry Covent Garden store the other week and I think I need it!

While I’m waiting for my nails to dry, I thought I’d share with you a little pink wool bag I made recently.

Isn’t it cute?

The outer fabric forms a lip to the lining, which was really difficult to work out in my head! The coursage on the front is a shop bought one. I love how coursages are making a revival – my friend over at second phase living makes beautiful ones.

And whilst looking for a picture of that pink bag to show you, I found some other purse pictures I’ve haven’t blogged about – a nice surprise!

This is using some of the 1950s style fabric I bought. The zip corners didn’t quite work on this one, but I still like it.

I think it’s another weekend of Christmas craftiness approaching, I’ll be sure to post some pictures.

I am a huge fan of handbags of all kinds. I have huge straw totes, bags cleverly disguised as lunchboxes and fishing tackle baskets – I once even had a bag whose design was based on a Swiss gas mask bag (in retrospect, one of my darker periods). But I must confess that I have a deep and longstanding love affair with clutch bags. There’s something so simple and elegant about a tiny envelope bag tucked under the arm!

Clutches are the perfect size for lunch out with the girls, a night on the town with my guy, or a day of shopping. Clutches also force me to selectively edit what I carry. And if you are anything like me, the jumble that collects in some of my bigger bags can be downright alarming!

The only downside of the clutch bags is there is often no “hand-free mode.” Luckily for us, handbag designers have increasingly taken this basic need into account. So now, we can carry a clutch to a cocktail party, hold a drink and shake hands with the bosses’ wife – all at the same time!

Some of the best I’ve found include an extremely affordable wristlet in a trendy embossed mock croc by Adi Designs. I have this in lavender and love it! This seemingly tiny bag has a surprisingly roomy interior, inside and outside zipper compartments, clear ID window, removable card holder and coin purse. Best of all is the highly useful end wrist strap! In addition to lavender, this bag also comes in lemon, lime, tangerine and black. And at only $19.99 at www.overstock.com, you can afford them all.

A more upscale version comes from one of my all-time favorite designers, Tommy Hilfiger. His classic American style means that a Hilfiger purchase is really an investment, because it simply won’t go out of style. Of his fabulous handbag collection, my favorite is a sleek black clutch bag in patent leather. The elegant, stylized tortoiseshell finished handle is cleverly designed so that you can easily slip your wrist through it, should you need to use your hands. Beautiful and practical! $128 at www.purses.com.

My ultimate clutch bag is from the Cocktail Collection at Butler Bag. Made of crushed Italian leather, this high-end bag is a favorite among celebrities and is no stranger to the red carpet. Like all pieces from Butler Bag, the interior compartmentalization speaks to my ever present need to try and stay organized. For me, the best part of this bag is the way that you can carry it. The clever outside strap — which you slide your palm through — means you’ll never drop this beauty climbing into a taxi! At $800 from www.ButlerBag.com it’s a major splurge, but oh-so-gorgeous!

Indian Spices Evening Bag : Embroidered Hand Bags by RHC – $24.95.

Alright, so I’m a little biased. Jennifer Groover, the inventor of the Butler Bag is a friend. But hey, it’s still the best handbag I’ve ever owned.

The Butler Bag helps me get (and stay!) organized. Filled with sturdy dividers, there’s a place for absolutely everything. No more searching for the cell while trying to navigate traffic. No more keys lost in the “black hole” of my old bags.

The inspiration came to Jen when she had her adorable twins. Anyone who has ever carried a diaper bag for one, can imagine the challenge of carrying one for two. Fruitless searching failed to turn up a bag that had anything other than the most rudimentary compartments. Finally, in desperation, she grabbed the silverware divider from the dishwasher – and viola! – the light bulb went off!

Not everyone with a great idea can turn it into a viable product, but lucky for us, Jen turned that idea, not only into a handbag that keeps us organized, but does it with style. Plus, Jen releases new collections, colors, sizes and styles regularly!

I can’t remember where I got the pattern for this bag, but I love it.  It was super easy to make, and took just a few hours one cold, winter-y morning.  When I finished, there was still coffee in the pot.

The wooden handles and canvas lining on this bag make it really sturdy, and it is more than big enough to carry a book, wallet, phone and keys.  I would be lying if I said I didn’t use it for a grocery bag on those random trips to the store when I forgot my canvas bags.  I think I’d add internal pockets next time, since the inside is just one giant pocket right now.  Like I said, it’s big, and I have lost my gum in its depths once or twice.

When I made it, I bought two sets of handles and still have the second set.  I’m waiting to use them with the perfect project/fabric.  I’ve been waiting for a year now.  Might it be time to settle for something less than perfect? (Asks the single 30 year old…)
