Ordet aktivist är ett intressant ord, eftersom det symboliserar en person som är en underhuggare och som uttnyttjas utav mer smarta och i vissa fall seriösa personer som sitter högre upp i samma falang, så att säga.

Sedan finns det många olika sorters aktivister, t ex miljöaktivister, djurrättsaktivister och vänsteraktivister. De två sistnämnda är varken demokratiska eller seriösa, ett exempel på detta skedde igår då c:a 50 idiotiska antidemokrater till vänsteraktivister försökte sabotera ett möte i Vellinge anordnat utav SDU, alltså Sverigedemokratisk Ungdom.

Deras försök, bl a via äggkastning och skrik av alla de slag, hade dock ingen effekt. Det finns nämligen saker som poliser, högtalare och volymknappar på högtalare.

När det gäller djurrättsaktivister så tycker jag att de är bra, bortsett ifrån de handlingar som de gör och begår. Om de bara lade av med dessa så skulle de komma längre, detsamma gäller vänsteraktivister.

Men detta fattar utav någon anledning inte dessa båda grupperingar, vilket säger ganska mycket om deras bångstyrighet och låga IQ. De bete’r sig enkelt uttryckt värre än t ex en stenkåt bisonoxetjur, vars hormonaktivitet har spårat ur så mycket att han är en fara för alla människor som råkar befinna sig i de marker som han befinner sig i.

Nu menar jag inte att vänsteraktivister och djurrättsaktivister utnyttjar djur sexuellt, t ex kor och katter, även om många utav dem verkar ha gjort det minst några gånger för mycket.

Detta kan i så fall förklara deras bete’ende vid t ex motdemonstatrationer, de är “översexuella” i en något konstig bemärkelse så att säga.

Motdemonstrationer och motdemonstrationer förresten, -Det är ju bara ett jävla bröl, som Brasse Brännström sade i sketchen “Fiolen min” ifrån 1976. Man skulle kunna tro att vänsteraktivister är kåta på sverigedemokrater och för övrigt alla som dessa aktivister är emot.

Snacka om att de är ruskigt osäkra på sig själva, det är de ju av allt att döma ändå förresten.

In Solitary - "outdoor" dogs

Dogs that live full time or spend much of their day outside, in the yard, in the dog run or in the garden, separated from their people are spending undeserved time in solitary confinement.

Solitary confinement is used as a way of punishing social animals because we know just how aversive isolation is. Outdoor dogs have done nothing to deserve this life sentence.

Humans have spent many many many thousands of years domesticating dogs so that they have become the finest of companions. Companion animals are just that – partners, buddys, friends. This is a difficult relationship to maintain if the participants are separated from one another.

A common response I get to my concern for outdoor dogs includes references to times gone by: “when I was growing up, dogs were outdoors all the time” etc.
Indeed when I was a kid, I remember there always being dogs hanging around groups of children playing, these dogs were one of us and they met lots and lots of people and other dogs, experienced all sorts of goings on and led enriched, active lives. The odd one was hit by a car or disappeared never to be seen again but for the most part these dogs seemed to have lots of fun.

Well, of course one thing that is most obvious is that times have changed and conditions for companion dogs have changed drastically:

dog control legislation and leash laws have had a profound effect on dogs’ lives as now instead of spending days in contact with lots of playing children or out and about with active adults they are confined to short bouts of on leash exercise and the rest of the time confined to houses and small gardens
change in human lifestyle – people spend longer stretches away from the house and children spend less time outside playing; these changes have got to do with expensive living, longer commuter times and the lack of safe areas for children to play
women have returned to work – first, this is something I am a fan of (as a woman who works outside of the home!!) but this is something that means that there are fewer occupied homes during the day – dogs must spend long periods alone
population, traffic increases and more built up areas – people are living in closer quarters

With all these changes it has become more and more difficult to socialise dogs at a time when socialisation is even more essential because of these changes and such high expectations of our pet dogs - vicious circle…

Dogs are not lawn ornaments

So what is the big problem with outdoor dogs; there are so many, where to start?!

Many people believe that dogs will exercise and amuse themselves appropriately when left outside to “run around” - this is so far from the truth.

Your outdoor dog will sit at the door or gate waiting for you.

But, when you don’t come for him he will amuse himself – but the sorts of things dogs find entertaining and amusing are not always acceptable behaviours to their people.

Outdoor dogs generally pass their time barking, chewing, chasing, reacting to stimuli outside and inside the fence, being tormented by local children, digging, howling, jumping, pacing, escaping, becoming more and more territorial, reactive, aggressive and bored.

These are all perfectly normal doggie behaviours that when exhibited excessively and/or inappropriately become a major problem for people. These people problems quickly become dog problems as they commonly lead to the dog being surrendered to a pound or put for rehoming.

Dogs that are left outdoors, especially if confined behind a fence or if tethered, are likely to develop serious problems including aggression, reactivity and fence fighting (frustration aggression).

When dogs are confined they feel less well able to escape threats and as such often use explosive bursts of lunging, growling and barking to have the perceived threat move on.
This frustration associated with all sorts of activities that the dog can see (such as delivery people, guests, children, other animals etc.) and the lack of socialisation typical of outdoor dogs may even lead to aggression and biting incidents.

Many pet owners are surprised at just how ‘crazy’ their dog is after all this apparent running around and exercising outside. Dogs that spend little time with their people are likely to have poor impulse control and because they get to see people so rarely, they tend to be over the top anytime they are in contact.
This of course leads to more isolation for the dog because his people don’t want to be around him.

Untrained dogs should be supervised or confined in a puppy proof area with plenty to do. Many people believe that once the dog is outside in an apparently safe back garden that supervision is no longer necessary.
Well, considering the list of mischief that outdoor dogs get into this is obviously not so.

Probably the least obvious result (but one of the most distressing) of the dog spending extended periods of time away from his people in solitary confinement is the extent of this dog’s detachment to people.
Outdoor dogs become more and more independent and detached from people – this is not nice, healthy or safe when it comes to family pets.

These independent, outdoor dogs are constantly rewarded by their environment that they never have to look to their person for guidance. These dogs are typically difficult to teach focus to, they pull on leash, they have little impulse control, poor recall and really don’t want to spend a lot of time with their people.
This of course makes training very difficult. How can you control or be a part of what your dog does if you leave him alone, unsupervised for extended periods.
Outdoor dogs often become ingenious escape artists and many wander and run away – this is because they have learnt to get their ‘jollies’ away from their family.

This detachment and independence is terminal for relationship: your dog finding out how much fun he can have without you.

Try it!

If you keep your dog outdoors (much of the time) and don’t see anything wrong with it – try it!

Sit out in your dog’s area – just sit there; no mobile phone, no internet, no TV, no magazine or book, no company (human or canine), no appropriate entertainment and no contact with others.

Even doing this for 15 minutes will help you to understand how lonely it is for your dog and how easy it would be for him to pick up all sorts of habits that are less than desireable. So imagine doing it for most of the day, every day.

Now you might well say “but dogs are not humans” and you would be right. But, there is a reason that dogs and people have been partners for such a long time – we have very similar needs; one of those being that we are both social species who have a desire and need to bond strongly with those around us.

All sorts of pretty nasty isolation studies using different species as subjects have shown that contact with others is essential for psychological and physiological health. (See Harlow’s isolation studies with young rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta)

Don’t punish a dog for being a dog

Many people still hold onto the attitude that pets should be outdoor dogs but this to me is inexcusable in light of the changes in companion dog living conditions and the higher expectations that we have of our pet dogs.

But, many pet dogs end up as outdoor dogs simply for being dogs.

When we bring a puppy home we are happy to enjoy the cute, cuddly, bundle of fluff until he starts to act like a dog: peeing, pooing, chewing, barking, biting, jumping up, digging, humping, teething and crying all night.

We don’t socialise the puppy thoroughly and don’t spend enough time installing acceptable alternative behaviours so by the time the cute, cuddly bundle of fluff becomes a teenager he is on a slippery slope to becoming a dog that is confined outdoors because of his doggie behaviour. Teenage dog behaviours are not easy to live with so the dog is left to his own devices outdoors.

As a result of lack of socialisation, training, interaction and supervision the dog becomes an outdoor dog where his behaviour is likely to become more unacceptable and he is closer to being rehomed.

Do you have trouble with an outdoor dog?

There is a solution to this problem (or to the problems) with your outdoor dog. Like many behaviour issues we start with management and in this case if your dog is outside alone and unsupervised getting into mischief, to stop that the dog needs to come inside.

Uh-oh I hear you say, how are you going to have your whirling dervish of a dog indoors?
This is where training comes in.

There are several approaches to this issue. We need to work on the dog’s indoor behaviour and his outdoor behaviour. It is probably more realistic that many former outdoor dogs are likely to have to spend some time outdoors alone so lets start there.

The Great Outdoors

If your dog is to spend time unsupervised anywhere and expected to behave appropriatley, we must puppyproof the area and provide acceptable outlets for doggie behaviours.

Puppyproofing makes sure that the dog’s environment ensures his safety and that your belongings are safe from your dog. Expect that your dog will chew, dig, rifle through bins and generally destroy things outside. So if we expect this we can prevent it.
Confine your dog from areas where he is likely to get himself into trouble. Use solid fencing to prevent access and make alternative areas very attractive to your dog.

Remember, your dog’s area must have shelter that is suitable to conditions, access to fresh water, shade and enough space that your dog can move around and toilet well away from his bed area.

Exercise your dog before leaving him alone outdoors (or indoors) - this will help to tire him out and hopefully he will sleep while alone. Leave some time after exercise before leaving the dog alone – this will allow him time to calm down and you can slowly wean the dog off your presence.

Now that you have confined your dog from his usual sources of entertainment you must give him access to appropriate outlets for this behaviour.

If your dog is to spend any time entertaining himself (alone or not) enrichment toys are an essential addition to your toolbox.

My all time favourite enrichment, food dispensing toys are Kong toys; they come in all sorts of styles, sizes and types to keep all pets occupied. How you use Kong toys is up to you but you are only limited by your imagination - check out the ‘tips and advice’ section here for suggestions to get you started.

There are lots of other excellent enrichment toys to help keep your dog occupied: the Boomer Snack Ball; the Dog Pyramid; Nina Ottosson toys and the entire Busy Buddy range.

Simply scattering your dog’s kibble over the lawn is a real quick, easy and cheap way to have your dog work for his food.

Provide your dog with his own digging pit and bury his stuffed enrichment toys and other goodies there.
Digging is a normal, natural and necessary dog behaviour – many dog’s simply love to dig! Instead of him getting his digging kicks out on your newly planted flowers, give him an area with loose soil or potting compost and encourage him to dig dig dig there.

Play lots of your dog’s favourite games outside in his area so that it becomes a fun place to be. Games offer great training opportunities once played responsibly keeping the human in control all the time.

Take regular breaks during games (every 15 seconds or so) and ask your dog for a behaviour such as sit or down. This will help to keep the dog focused on you and you can use the continuation of the game as a reward for performing. Rules during games are important so that the human can manage the dog’s arousal levels.

Rufus and I love to play tug, which is an all time favourite game but should be played with strict rules.

Games like fetch, football, chase are all high energy, high arousal games so must be controlled with plenty of obedience breaks.

Try asking your dog to wait out of sight and hide his favourite toy. Allow him to search for it and then have a game when he finds it. Dogs love hide n seek games!

Not only do games offer training and enrichment opportunities but they also have you and your dog spend valuable time together in a positive, rewarding atmosphere. Games and play is one of the best ways to enhance your relationship with your pet.

Making your dog’s area fun for him, tiring him out and giving him acceptable alternatives to undesireable behaviour will help make outdoor time a little more enjoyable for your pet.

Indoor manners

To improve your pet’s life (and yours!) we need to get your companion back inside with his family. For dogs to live in the human world they need to be shown very clearly how to behave appropriatley in this alien world so there are several exercises that have to be perfected in order for your dog to spend time indoors with you.

Housetraining is usually the first concern, and is often one of the reasons for the dog spending so much time outdoors in the first place. Contrary to popular belief adult dogs can be housetrained, it is slightly different to training puppies but adult dogs are able to ‘hold’ it longer and often have a preferred toileting spot outdoors already.

The key to housetraining any aged dog is to prevent them having accidents indoors. If we can get them into a toileting routine and bring them to their appropriate toileting area regularly we can reward them (with high value treats) for toileting there. Soon it is far more beneficial to toilet there rather than indoors.

Settle and be calm is another essential indoor dog exercise. These exercises are all about teaching dogs that good things come to calm doggies! This means that they are impulse control exercises, our favourite and the most useful training exercises for pet dogs.

These exercises include teaching your dog to lie down on cue, go to his bed on cue and wait patiently until you are able to interact with him. Sounds tough, right? Get training, the sooner you begin the sooner you will have a calm dog.

Meet-n-greets are an important indoor dog exercise so that your dog can remain indoors as part of the family even when guests arrive. Teaching your dog that sitting to greet is the way to get attention and even yummy treats is so important and especially important to practice at the front door where greetings are most likely to take place.

Measure out your dog’s kibble into little tubs and give them to guests (or actors during training) so that your dog gets lots and lots of practice of sitting politely for guests.

To live indoors your dog must also be happy to be in close proximity with people and allow them to handle all areas of the dog’s body. The dog must also be happy to have people nearby when he eats or works on a favourite chew toy – resource guarding is a common behaviour issue and one that requires professional advice.

As your dog becomes more and more civilised indoors you can begin to prepare him to spend time alone indoors. Alone training is important so that the dog can cope and not become too distressed when left alone. Even if your dog has been relatively comfortable when left alone outdoors he will probably still need help to cope when alone indoors.

Alone training involves leaving the dog for increasing amounts of time, first starting by just teaching the dog to be ignored when in the same room as you, then when you step outside the room, then as you increase the time outside the room and so on until you can leave the dog alone while you go outside for increasing lengths of time.

It is important to note that all of the requirements for spending time indoors and outdoors should form part of a puppy’s early socialisation and training program so that the problems can be avoided from the start.

Get your dog indoors!

Dogs who spend time outdoors alone are more likely to:

exhibit doggie behaviours that cause problems for humans e.g. barking, digging, chewing etc.
develop problems with excessive exhibiton of these behaviours
develop behaviours that are symptoms of psychological, emotional and behavioural damage
be exposed to the elements
be difficult to train and develop that all important relationship with
be posioned
be teased and abused by neighbourhood children
be stolen
be frustrated by the activities that they can see, hear etc. such as delivery people, wildlife, other dogs, cats, kids etc.
escape and wander
bite someone and/or exhibit aggressive behaviour

You see, its well worth having a companion dog that is a companion dog.

I understand that not everyone can have a dog with them in all areas of their life and I know that all dogs are different and some are perfectly happy outdoor dogs. But, I also see many many many more dogs that need and deserve more.

Therefore it is the owners responsibility to arrange alternatives for their pets such as training the dog to be an indoor dog; having someone come in to see the dog during the day while he is alone; hiring a dog walker; bringing your dog to doggie daycare.

As Jean Donaldson says, “dogs are time intensive, not space intensive“. If you don’t want to or can’t spend time with a dog socialising him, training him, playing with him and interacting with him – don’t have a dog!

Efter att ha testat vår nya diskmaskin kunde jag konstatera att den inte fungerade som jag hade förväntat mig. Disken blev liksom inte helt ren, förutom om den var närmast perfekt avsköljd och placerad enligt en ganska avancerad strategi. Det måste alltså var något fel på maskin. Ut kom en tekniker men 860 kronor senare hade jag fortfarande inte en diskmaskin som diskar som jag är van vid. Däremot hade jag lärt mig något nytt.

De allra nyaste diskmaskinerna diskar helt enkelt sämre än de gamla för att spara på vatten och elektricitet. Tidigare körde man exempelvis vatten i bägge spolpropellrarna, nu kör man en i taget. Min nya Siemens håller på och tuggar i tre timmar istället för en timme, och ger dessutom ofta ett tveksamt resultat.

Orsaken är nya regler som styr hur mycket maskinerna får förbruka. Nu när jag fick klarhet i varför, så känns det helt okej. Jag ska försöka skölja av disken (utan att förbruka för mycket vatten) och jag ska anstränga mig för att placera disken rätt. Problemet med det hela är ingen tillverkare i sin marknadsföring lyfter fram att prestandan försämras, vilket gör att många besvikna köpare tydligen får hosta upp med 860 kronor för en lektion i diskmaskinsevolution.

Grejen är att det som händer med diskmaskinerna måste hända inom fler områden. Vi har helt enkelt vant oss vid en standard som är för bra (för resurskrävande) och för billig (för många hållbarhetskompromisser längs värdekedjan). Därför kommer vi förhoppningsvis vara med om en period av “diskmaskinseffekter” innan teknologin blivit tillräckligt smart för både full prestanda och total hållbarhet. Och för oss användare gäller det att uppmuntra tillverkarna att fortsätta satsa på rätt utveckling, även om det innebär att man får diska om en tallrik då och då.
